Eom Ki-joon up for new Hong sisters drama Warm and Cozy
by girlfriday
There was some panic in the air when news came out that Kim Woo-bin (Heirs) had taken himself out of the running to star in the new Hong sisters drama Warm and Cozy (formerly Jeju Island Gatsby), but his agency thankfully refuted the story. He’s still not confirmed — he and Kang So-ra are still considering their offers to headline, but I guess he’s not NOT doing the drama. I know, thanks for the breadcrumb.
The new MBC rom-com was previously called Jeju Island Gatsby (which I liked, darn it), but has changed its title to Warm and Cozy — the phrase is a Jeju Island colloquialism that means “warm in a feel-good way,” with a down-home sort of feel that’s inherent in the dialect. So, Warm and Cozy. The Hong sisters writing duo is re-teaming with PD Park Hong-kyun of Best Love, which I hope means that we can expect the same brand of pee-your-pants funny in their new collaboration.
Eom Ki-joon is now in talks to co-star, and though we we’re not told anything about the role that he’s been offered, I can guarantee it’ll be a huge departure from his last character in the dark thriller Golden Cross. I hope he signs on, because Eom Ki-joon is fantastic in comedic roles (Dream High, Scent of a Woman), especially as the sweet and bumbling nerd. Lee Sung-jae (King’s Face) has also been cast in a supporting role; perhaps he’ll get to depart from his usual villainy as well.
The producers are still really vague about the details of the drama’s plot, so all we know for now is that it’s a romantic comedy set in Jeju, about young people who move down to the island to escape the suffocating city life. It’s described as a “healing romance,” but that’s what all the romances are called these days; just as long as we’re not healing anyone with multiple personalities, I think I’m good with just about anything else. Now all we need are some actual casting confirmations!
Warm and Cozy follows Angry Mom on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning in May.

Wow Eom Ki Joon! I think he is almost confirmed for this drama since his musical schedules for April-May are strictly on Fridays only, all other days are clear of schedules.
I always love him as cold villain but with depth like in Phantom, but I'll take anything with Eom Ki Joon in it. I miss him

Well, I've never been a Hong-sisters fan. Their characters are everything I hate to see in dramas (typical, cliched cold, chaebol dude with the typical, cliched dumb candy girl), and the story elements are usually nothing special. My girlfriend is a gumiho might have been the only exception, to a certain degree, which is why I can step up and say I actually liked it without feeling ashamed.
I'll watch the first episode of this one if Woobin and Sora are cast. Otherwise, I'll be waiting for reviews to see if it's worth the look.

Please no - HGD was pretty awful, and Sung Yuri's acting was even worse.
Also, the heroine in "The Greatest Love" wasn't dumb, just downtrodden and the hero (Dokko Jin), while having an outward "cool" image, was really an insecure little kid inside - which is why DJ had such a great bromance w/ "DingDong" despite the wide age gap.

The Hong sisters, however, are probably overrated in their writing skills.
Some things they do well - such as giving their main characters funny/cute mannerisms/sayings, but they tend to be weak w/ secondary characters and the overall story-line (esp. the last 3rd of their shows).
Of the Hong sisters shows I have watched, the best was TGL, followed by "Master's Sun" and then MGIAG; while I absolutely loved the character Mi-ho (and Shina Mina's portrayal), the secondary characters and the how the series resolved its essential plot-line was too cliche (really, a marriage scene and characters just missing each other as they pass each other by?).
But "My Girl", HGD and "Big" were just plain awful.

Master's Sun actually made fun of the Candy concept, and the heroine was not dumb at all. Even in My Girl/DGCH, the heroines were actually smart, not just sitting down to take jerk rich guy's behavior.
But the Hong sisters can be bad at it sometimes. And Big was horrible.

I can't speak for these dramas, my memory of them is very blurry (probably due to an abuse of skipping parts). I vaguely remember Master's sun not being TOO bad, but even then I couldn't watch it until the end. You're beautiful I did watch until the end, and I still wonder why haha I guess it should be up there as an "exception" with MGIAG, but even as I was watching I saw no value in it so...
I think my problem is that in general, the characters of the Hong sisters really don't appeal to me, the humor tends to feel exaggerated (I feel like it's for a young audience - like, quite young), and the plot is not original. But, to answer Sour Grapes's question, I did not watch Hong Gil Dong. Maybe I'll try it out someday. And I don't completely close doors. They might come up with something I'll really enjoy in the future (maybe this one?)

Delightful Girl Choon hyang and My Girl were their first dramas (even today, DGCH remains one of my faves) and both had really fun protagonists, and some of my favorite OTPs, so maybe those ones will change your mind. I LOVED My Girlfriend's a Gumiho, but admit to not being a huge fan of You're Beautiful, Big, and Best Love either (and even Master's Sun didn't rank too high for me, though I liked it more than the others). Hong Gil Dong was okay, but if I remember correctly, it did have a lot of pointless potty humor in the beginning, though it did feel different from their other series as a whole.
Still looking forward to this one though. ^_^

Bwahahaha we had enough of THAT "trend" ...Someone give that, time slips and noona romances a rest for a decade or two plz!
Seems Woobin ah wants to focus on his film career, which seems to be going well for him. So no surprise if he - in fact - turned this down (which is still a mystery at this point). Also from the looks of it, his role won't be anything special so it's probably why he's thinking HARD about accepting or not.
It'll be interesting to see who'll end up filling his shoes if does opt out!

@DD
We don't know the inner working of the production though. Who knows, maybe they think JCW doesn't suit the image they're looking for, or maybe the sponsors don't want him in. There are many other reasons to explain why a production don't seek certain actors. Anything can happen, right? :)

also I see that one of the reasons given for the initial refusal is that the drama doesn't have a script yet......even if it's the Hong sisters, I doubt Kim Woo-bin can go entirely on faith for this one.
(and they are known for planning out their shows well in advance so not having a script to show potential leads at this stage isn't exactly inspiring confidence.)

I'm honestly confused as to why Kim Woo Bin has not jumped to take the lead in this drama. If I recall, he has yet to have a leading part in a drama. Also, this is a Hong Sisters drama which is almost certain to do well (with a few exceptions). I'm surprised the cast isn't already confirmed at this point. Pretty sure casting for Master's Sun was done well before it aired.

Two reasons:
1. He might want to focus more on doing movies, the prestige and working conditions are better and he has two successful ones to his credit already.
2. I don't know if tv carries the prestige it did even two years ago considering how far ratings have fallen. Even if it is the Hong sisters, I can understand why he might be reluctant to sign without an actual script in hand.

however, tv dramas provide global exposure beyond asia - so i'd think actors would benefit more from the small screen.
tv drama schedules and conditions are demanding... but korean movies get filmed and released within several months.
in the US, it takes years to get a movie through post-production and release, doesn't it?

well, as someone pointed out elsewhere, Jeon Ji-hyun didn't do any dramas for 15 years and was still a top star.
Plenty of the top stars of Chungmuro today are people who have actively avoided doing dramas as soon as they had one decent role, and don't seem to have suffered for it since they are still as in demand and respected as ever. (Ha Jung-woo, Im Soo-jung, Kang Dong-won....)
Dramas are good in that they can be a litmus test of an actor's ability to portray a character over an extended period of time. I have no patience for people who suck in dramas and then blame the system for it.

I can say kim woo bin nowhere near jun ji hyun level for him to be respected in movie area. His leading movie also got bad critic for acting and script. It becomes fishy when he rejecting hong sister drama. Maybe he wants to find another bad guy role like heirs? If he is not varied his roles in future he will be labelled as typecast actor who can do one type of role only.
pogo
March 18, 2015 at 8:01 PM
@guess - That doesn't alter my point in the slightest, which is that many Korean actors stick to doing only film, have done so since quite early in their careers (i.e. the same stage Kim Woo-bin is at now) and have grown well as actors for it.
I really would like KWB to take this drama but the amount of entitlement some people seem to feel about it is off-putting, to say the least. He isn't obliged to take it just because it's being offered to him.
And as many have pointed out, the Hong sisters are not perfect guarantees of success and this past year have seen shows struggling to reach even 11 percet in ratings. While Korean movies, on the other hand, have been hitting it big at the box office all year. Guess which one a person with common sense would choose?

After King's Face, I'm kind of hoping SIG sticks to cable, where he really shines. I feel like the networks don't really get him. Maybe the Hong Sisters could overcome that; he can certainly pull off their brand of toilet humor. But I really am not sure about him doing their typical male lead: the dude who takes himself too seriously and is thus unintentionally funny. I guess he was a bit like that in Answer Me (which, why haven't you seen that?), but I feel like his chemistry with Eunjie made his straight man schtck work.

Is this really true? Kim Woo Bin turned it down? WHAT a disappointment. I am late to the news of this new Hong Sister's drama.
Please say it is NOT true. I know he can be a polarizing actor. A little uncertain why... Speaking from totally rose-tinted glasses, I ADORE him and I thought he saved Heirs. ha! I do. I thought he was the best part of the show. Krystal and her smarty pants boyfriend were also adorable and gave the show much needed light that was stupidly heavy and melodramatic.
