The misadventures of three generations of Unkind Women

I’m still curious about KBS’s decision to make Unkind Women a Wednesday-Thursday show when everything about it screams family weekend drama. That’s not a bad thing — it just follows a pretty familiar pattern that I’m used to seeing in longer-running shows on Saturdays and Sundays. The series is about three generations of hot-blooded women living under one roof, and follows their downward spirals when nothing goes according to plan in any of their lives. The show is gearing up for a premiere next week, though you wouldn’t know it from the dearth of promo materials; a new longer trailer reveals a little more about the characters and the mishaps to come.

Kim Hye-ja (I Live in Cheongdam-dong) plays the matriarch, a sought-after cooking instructor who can cut you down to size with sharp words spoken in her characteristic sweet, melodic voice. Ha, those are the scariest kinds of moms. Her eldest daughter Do Ji-won (Healer) is a star news anchor who’s got a foul temper and a fouler mouth, but excels at just about everything. Life is great for her until she loses her anchor spot, after which her life begins to slope downward for the first time ever.

Second daughter Chae Shi-ra (Five Fingers) is the total opposite of her successful sister. She has a gambling problem and is a general mess through and through, who can never seem to get her life together. She had a daughter at the age of twenty and remained a perpetual teenager, though she does strive to make sure that her daughter is successful in all the ways that she’s not. In the trailer, she goes from crazy ajumma gangster with a frizzy perm to a chic professional woman, so something must happen to incite her total makeover.

Lee Hana (High School King of Savvy) is Chae Shi-ra’s daughter, and she’s a university lecturer who has a bunch of degrees but is pretty hapless in the real world. She’ll have the affections of a pair of half-brothers: Kim Ji-suk (Angel Eyes), a polished announcer-turned-PD, and Song Jae-rim (Surplus Princess), a fencing instructor. She’ll end up losing her job because of Kim Ji-suk, who then tries to fix her life, and she’ll work a bunch of part-time jobs where she meets Song Jae-rim. It’s a tough job, but juggling two hot bros kinda comes with the territory.

The teasers aren’t necessarily drawing me in, though the four women will probably be funny together. Given the producers — the PD of My Daughter Seo-young and the writer of Equator Man — I think it’s probably going to be a solid show. It’s not high-concept or sexy, but maybe it’s not such a bad idea to get another dose of comfort food in a weekday slot. Feel-good family hijinks are a dramaland staple for a reason.

Unkind Women premieres this coming Wednesday, February 25.

I want that job.

No one ever plans on being caught in between Song Jae-rim and Kim Ji-suk. But I won't fault a girl for trying. ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

(On a non-shallow note, I'm curious about Do Ji-won/Myung-hee as an actress. :D Hope this drama is good *fingers crossed* *toes crossed* *talismans bought* *incense lit*)

IKR?!

In a not-so-good actress, that role would've been bland and throwaway. She wasn't given much to work with. But we end up rooting and caring for her anyway.

I just know you're enjoying the shirtless SJR's show off his swordsmanship skills.

Lee Ha Na is on a roll,eh? First it was Seo In-Guk and Lee Soo-Hyuk. Now it's Kim Ji-suk and Song Jae-rim. Good fortune.

Omg I know right Lee Hana is one lucky bitch haha :)) on the side note, I actually love her acting in High school King. She actually looks like a socially awkward girl instead of a pretty girl in ugly makeup like the rest of korean actresses playing this kind of role.

i am glad kbs is offering something different. can't take two shows about multiple personalities on Wed Thurs anymore.

Why can't you take two shows about multiple personality on the same day? You can only watch one at a time.

American tv is dominated by cops and lawyer shows. People would have nothing to watch if too many crime solving shows on tv was seen as a negative.

Song Jae Rim its handsome but sorry girls, he's not a good actor for a leading role.

I wonder about this too. I'm subscribed to Song Jae-rim alerts and there's this Korean news site that lists Kim Ji-suk first before Song Jae-rim.

Then in the teasers it doesn't show SJR very much. :(

Anyway, it seems to be a female-centric drama and I have a feeling the guys will just be "someone to romance" here. Not the focus of the story.

(Wow I sounded sane. hahaha~)

Nope. He's still an office kind of guy, I think(?)

His half-bro Rim is the one who teaches Kendo. But there will probably be a couple of scenes where they both wear the gear and spar. :)

Gotta love the irony that the commenter who seems most excited about this being a genuinely female-centric Drama is himself a male! I barely even know who SJR is, so don't care at all if his is "bit-part" lead, ecept insofar as that would make a nice role reversal from all the Dramas where the female leads were mere plot devices.

I'm very much hoping that Lee Ha Na will sing for the OST, she seems to be much more a musician who acts than an actor who sings, so I want to hear more of her lovely voice. Above all, though, I just want to hear that this Drama is gonig to be subbed, by SOMEONE, since there's no sign of it yet at the big three.

I had to check dramawiki because I just couldn't remember what ended for this to start. There's no promotions or hype whatsoever for a weekday drama. It might do well in the ratings game though; KBS's family dramas are mostly all well received.

I think family dramas are the only dramas that get ratings over 20 these days. But the fact that they air in a totally different timeslot often with no other drama as competition is one of the reasons they usually get those high ratings (especially KBS dramas). Since there hasn't been a Mon-Thurs drama to get anything close to 20 in the ratings since Empress Ki and YWCFTS (even with big names attached), KBS might be testing the waters with the family drama format during the week. It certainly didn't hurt when they aired "Baker King". I honestly don't like family dramas and only tolerate them for my favs. If it wasn't for Lee Hana and Song Jae Rim I would definitely skip it.

Not fond of the writer or PD but this is a female centric drama, so of course I'll watch it :'). Neither Kim Ji Suk or Song Jae Rim are particularly good actors imo, the female cast will definitely carry the show.

I'm surprised KBS aren't promoting this bc they really need a hit weekday show. Blood's flopping already and The King's Face didn't do well either. I can't remember the last time they had a hit.

Oh Kim Ji Suk, will you get the girl finally or lose to someone younger ? Hm, I hope it won't be the latter.
Coz I hate when shows make the girl love for a pretty young one instead of a manly man.

But beside this, I hope that this drama will really become female-centric like it announced.

And YESYESYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS for Song Jae-rim. Man did he get hot after WGM and trimming that hair. The thirst is real (after scouring YouTube, seeing him in SNL & Entertainment Weekly)
