Rain considers marital melo, Su Ae declines
by javabeans
While You Were Sleeping was to feature the film pairing of Rain (She’s So Lovable) and Su Ae (Thousand Day Promise) playing spouses, but now it looks like we’ll only getting half of that couple (at best): Su Ae has decided against the project, while Rain is still considering.
An early report apparently jumped the gun, announcing that the two actors had decided to take the movie, which was followed by a round of replies by the stars’ representatives correcting the claim. One of these days, you think we’ll get stories that are fact-checked before publication, instead of being part of the aftermath? A girl can dream.
The description for While You Were Sleeping is still rather vague, calling itself a melodrama telling the story of a husband wholly devoted to his wife. If it’s a melodrama I’m expecting a reason for tears, and with that title I wonder if we’re in illness/coma territory. The basic premise feels a bit like Su Ae’s Alzheimer’s melo Thousand Day Promise; perhaps she didn’t want to pull a repeat? This last project this director, Lee Jung-chul, worked on was the heartwarming Song-Joong-ki-with-puppies movie Hearty Paws 2 in 2010, so perhaps it won’t be all sadness and tears. Director Lee also previously worked with Su Ae in 2004’s Family, which may have driven assumption that she’d take this film.
It would’ve been an interesting pairing, though I’d say I would’ve watched way more for Su Ae than Rain, so having her leave the project dims my interest somewhat. I still like Rain and think he’s capable of good acting, but man, his project choices lately… She’s So Lovable may have been the worst drama I’ve seen in recent memory, though it wasn’t offensively bad — just completely limp, like no effort was put into it. And his movies haven’t really worked either, either overseas or in Korea. But I can see the appeal in seeing him take on a story that’s simple and full of emotion, rather than one that’s flashy and loaded with tricks, and maybe playing a devoted husband in a melo would be the prime chance for him to get back to pure acting.
While You Were Sleeping is aiming to begin filming in the second half of the year.

The title reminds me of an early Sandra Bullock's movie.
He should do something romcom-y..

Yeah the one with the same title. Got a thrilling idea that they should remake it and cast Soo-ae to play Lucy!

Yeah! I saw the title and briefly hoped maybe they were doing a remake...that would be fun! ...Do you think it would be a bit more dramatic in the Korean world since she'd be accepted by the family as the elder brother's fiancee, but then she falls in love with the younger brother? Oh, gosh. Now I really wish they'd do that.

If it's a tv drama, I think the family ought to be very rich and they wouldn't be half as nice as the Callahans. But a movie would actually work very well. Getting too hopeful here. LOL

Okay, Rain. A little advice? Do comedies. Not melos.

Oh, I don't know...some of his earlier dramas were melos and he did very well with those emotions. Of course, he had better co-actors than he did for She's So Forgettable.

Doesn't has any intention for bashing or discrimination but I real wanna know, how could Rain's co-stars in She's So Lovable were inexperienced actors (Krystal and L)? I mean, he's a big star. Maybe not really now, but still an A-list celebs. He should get better co-stars like before. Just saying.

Lol, I think it's a bit of a mystery to everyone why he'd pick such a horrendous script with co-stars who don't really know the meaning of acting. He's doing movies/dramas with some big names overseas - particularly in China. But he definitely needs to decide well on his projects in SK. Maybe he should just do a Hong Sisters drama with Kim Tae-hee. I'd watch the heck outta that, heh.

If I recall correctly, Rain was attached to She's So Loveable before they cast either Krystal or L. As for the script, well aren't there usually only one or two episodes written before dramas actually start airing? It's possible he thought it had potential before he saw how it would eventually play out.

Yea he was the first to be cast as far as my memory goes as well. But I'm sure whenever actors sign up for a drama, they have some inkling as to who their costars would be. I doubt he didn't know they were aiming for idols, although maybe no as Bad as Krystal and L.
As for the script, the first episode was horrendous in itself with the 'epic' truck of doom as their first scene. I still don't understand what he was thinking. But hopefully he'll make better choices like he had in the past. He deserves better than SSL. Seriously.

While You Were Sleeping? Isn't it one of the movie with Sandra Bullock long time ago? lol
I really love korean dramas. However, I miss comedy genre. I mean totally comedy drama. The more crazy and funny is the better. Getting bored with so many rom-coms, actions and melodramas. I need something fresh from oven that I could eat directly without feeling headache..hufffttt…
Rain (Full House) and Eric Mun (Super Rookie) are two of non original actors that very skilled in this kind of comedy drama. They both even better than the original actors in this genre drama.

Rain was good and goofy in Full House. And I was talking about Super Rookie for Eric Mun not Spy Myung Wol though. All of us know how messy Spy Myung Wol was because of the writing. But for me, Eric is one of the better actor out there. Que Sera Sera and Discovery of Romance prove that. You should check Eric in Super Rookie. It was so funny drama and you may agree with my opinion that he suits comedy roles more.
My favorite of Rain will always be Full House. That's why I hope he'll get chance in comedy drama again.

Oh, I adore Rain and Amdown for anything he does even if his drama and movie choices have been questionable to say the least. He's such a good actor, I just think he has a knack of picking some godawful projects.
This one sounds... boring. I don't know if I'm up for him doing a melo although he's quite good at it, undoubtedly. Personally, I'd rather he gets back to dramaland and does something better than that horrible one he did last year. I don't even care what the genre is, as long as it's good. I need the stink washed off, asap!

I ❤️ RAIN to itty bitty pieces. He is my first K-drama love and remains solidly atop my list of biases, but he is putting my patience to the test with his choice in projects. MLG was so horridly boring I just could not make it through despite putting forth a Herculean effort to do so. And now his next project may be a melo. I will hold out hope because it's him, but . . .

If only this was like the "While you were sleeping" rom-com with Sandra Bullock, I'd even watch a drama version of that. Oh 90's romantic-comedies, they don't really make them like that anymore...
But the premise for this movie sounds just meh, not my cup of tea.

Rain... oh Rain... the only drama i like from him is full house. the one and only that i still repeatedly watch from time to time. I found the other drama's by him to be mediocre. and yes, she's so lovable is soooo bad that I drank a can of beer each time i watch new episode just for the sake of finishing all the drama. all because I love Rain, Krystal and L.
But those 3 should never ever be in the same drama again. I swear.

Rain's actually a really good actor, but even a great actor can't save a project like She's So Forgettable. He did ok in his parts but all it served to do was highlight just how bad everyone else was. And he's good in true melos too - wish he'd chosen this one.
Same with Su Ae, she's up there among the best of her generation. I don't think she's done a drama since Yawang and that was totally a melo, so maybe she wants a genre change? Wouldn't blame her.

I liked Su Ae and as much as I want to see her again in a drama, I think it's okay that she rejected this role.
I've read before in one of her post-Yawang interviews that she wanted a romcom for a change if ever she'll have another drama.
The one and only romcom that I have seen her in is '9 Ends and 2 Outs' and I absolutely loved it and it is still one of the best realistic romcoms that I've seen so far. That was back in 2007 and it has been almost 8 yrs since then so I really really hope that she chooses romcom for her next drama because she's a great actress.

It is such a good news that Rain will play a drama again. What about pairing him with Song Hye Kyo or Shin Mi Nah? They had a good chemistry before.
In the last drama Shes So Lovable...i think Rain like usually always acting good. He didnt neeg much effort to act because it had a light and easy going storyline..well either romcom, melo, or action i think Rain always plays good..goodjob Rain

One door closes, another door opens...if we ignore the fact that the purpose of doors is to do both but whatever. Point being, I hope this means we get to see Su Ae in all her awesomeness in something else relatively soon. I miss her a lot.
Rain is probably doing the smart thing and waiting to see who his costars are before he confirms so he doesn't get stuck babysitting again. Good on you Rain, good on you. (man I've been waiting to say that phrase all week!)
