Oh Jung-se headlines new Mnet drama about cohabitating couples
by girlfriday
With successful musical dramas Monstar and Persevere, Gu Hae-ra under its belt, cable network Mnet is planning to turn out more original drama content in the coming year. The station’s first venture away from musical shows will be The Lover, a drama about various couples that are living together in different units of an apartment building in Hongdae. Casting is still underway for the ensemble show, described as an omnibus drama that’ll weave in and out of various couples’ cohabitating woes. You mean couples voluntarily living together without false pretense? In dramaland? Well I’ll be damned.
Oh Jung-se (Plus Nine Boys) and Ryu Hyun-kyung (Tasty Life) are being courted to play the main couple, which is funny because they were almost co-stars in Ryu Hyun-kyung’s new movie. They’re a couple in their thirties who chose to live together instead of getting married, and have been sharing an apartment for two years. Yay for Oh Jung-se lining up a drama as his next project. I’m officially not mad anymore that he dropped the movie.
Choi Yeo-jin (Valid Love) and singer Jung Joon-young (1 Night 2 Days, Today’s Love) have been cast as the second couple — they’re twelve years apart in age and have been living together for a year. He’s a pretty-boy singer who carries his guitar everywhere he goes, but doesn’t actually know how to play it all that well. Pfft.
She’s a penny-pinching ajumma in the body of a hot woman who basically supports her much younger boyfriend. He drives her crazy but he’s a good guy at heart, and she can never manage to stay mad at him for long. Aw, they should totally have their own drama. And I love the idea of rocker Jung Joon-young playing a talentless musician.
Ha Eun-seol (Yoo-na’s Street) and model Park Jong-hwan have been cast to play a couple that just moved in together, and a pair of male roommates has yet to be cast. At the helm are PD Kim Tae-eun of Superstar K and writer Kim Min-seok of SNL Korea and the one-episode JTBC short Monster.
It’s not often that we get to see couples living together in dramaland when deeds aren’t misappropriated, serial killers aren’t on the loose, and contract relationships aren’t being enforced — granted, some of my favorite dramas do these things, but once in a while it’s nice to embrace realism.
The Lover is being planned for 12 episodes and premieres in April.

Realism, in dramaland? No thanks, that's what real life is for.

Well live-in relationships are not common from where I come and hence I can relate to the chasteness and purity of dramaland.

I agree. They are not common from where I come from too. Thats why I loved Kdrama's in the first place and found them so relatable...

What country are you from? Just curious. I like the chaste relationships in drama land, but in real life and on American TV, it is the opposite.

Yay a drama that will treat grown folks like grown folks and not pretend its normal for adults to have the libidos of 7 yr olds
I was really hoping Choi Ye-jin would get to headline her own show, ESPECIALLY after her heartrending performance in Valid Love. At least her pairing sounds amusing? Can this guy act?
Aw yay! Yoo-na's Street alumni! The actress turned out a lot better than I initially thought she would be, Yoon-ji was fun, it'll be cool to see what else she can do.
If its an SNL writer I expect zany fun like Surplus Princess so I'm pumped.

That's what I'm wondering - Can Jung Joon-Young act? He kind of got on my nerves in 1N2D. I get the age gap relationship but would rather have an awesome actor play opposite Choi Yeo-Jin. She's so talented, I'd hate to see it wasted.

I have a HUGE doubt that JJY can act..cause making his MV for "10 minutes" took a long time and he had the hardest time just emoting in that couple of minutes of MV (it was shown in the WGM episode he was in with Jung Yumi). Which is sad...cause I really, really like Choi Ye Jin, especially after Valid Love.

This is an mv where Jung joon young featured in with Lee chung ah. Not much of an indication though for he was on for a few minutes. There's even a kiss scene. It's got loads of other actors and actresses too.

Oh Jeong Se is a WIN. The ONLY thing I've seen him in which stank beyond all stinkage was the awful Drama.Which.Must.Not.Be.Named with Yoon Eun Hye and Lee Dong Gun. Apart from that abomination I've loved him in everything I've seen, and always llok out for him. But I'm also very excited for Ha Eun Sol. I'd not seen her in anythnig before Yoona's Street, and she was excellent in that Drama, also having a character who escaped the mushy meltdown of the final ten. I hope this Drama is a good one for all involved, and that Choi Ye Jin gets to show off her form. I mean her dancing form, of course. :)
