Odds and Ends: Hero in a box

girlfriday: Remember that thing we said when we were drunk?

javabeans: (1) You’re going to have to be more specific, and (2) odds are no.

girlfriday: In the drunk podcast, where we were talking about City Hunter and Healer and wanting to lock those actors in a box, so that they don’t ruin their careers (or taint our memories) with subsequent crap?

javabeans: Ah, where actor love and protectiveness manifest as kidnapping and imprisonment? Yes. I remember that. It’s for their own good!

girlfriday: It just made me think that there were so many others we’d want to lock up, because this happens so often, where someone busts out with an amazing performance in an amazing character, and then you kind of want them never to do another role again. Selfish, yes. But you know we all think it.

javabeans: I mean, to be less criminal about it, it mostly happens when we love the perfect melding of an actor and their role so much that it’s hard to think of them moving on and taking on new (sometimes lesser) characters. It can be most obvious in retrospect, where you see a great actor take bad role after bad role (won’t somebody save Yoon Eun-hye from herself?), but it can also happen when you just love what they’re doing so much right now that you don’t want to see them leave it. Choi Woo-shik in Ho-gu’s Love might be a good example.

girlfriday: I do so love Choi Woo-shik in that role. Like Yoon Shi-yoon as Enrique! I never thought twice about him until he was so bubbly and cute.

javabeans: …and you never thought twice about him when he was then sad and dour in Prime Minister and I, I’m sure.

girlfriday: Yes, see, this is why with the locking up. My prime example will always be Jung Il-woo as Iljimae.

javabeans: Ohhh. Sigh. He was so perfect, and that drama was so perfect, that the Jung Il-woo we see after that, even when he’s great (like in 49 Days and Ramyun Shop), seems like a different person than the Jung Il-woo who was Iljimae.

girlfriday: It ruined him with its perfection, is what it did. Or me. Maybe it just ruined me.

javabeans: That’s what I want with Sung Joon in Shut Up: Flower Boy Band, even though I think he’s totally got it in him to do good things in the future. I just loved him so much as the hurty, angsty, lonely teen rocker boy.

girlfriday: I always secretly hope he’ll bust out a guitar and join a band, no matter what boring character he’s playing.

javabeans: I always see him being all clean-cut afterward, even when he’s adorable like in I Need Romance 3, and I just think, “You sellout. What about the rock and roll, man?”

girlfriday: I’m pretty sure I’ll never stop seeing Yoo Yeon-seok as Chilbongie. Ever. Or Jung Woo as Oppa. I want them to just be those two characters FOREVA.

javabeans: But they have to exist forever in separate dramas. I can’t go through that again.

girlfriday: Don’t you think Shin Mina would be happier going through life as Gu Mi-ho forever?

javabeans: She might eat us all out of cow, but on the upside, that’s good for global warming, right? Then there are people like Lee Je-hoon, who was so amazingly amazing in Bleak Night that I just want to preserve him in that, even though that means he’d have to live his misery in an infinite loop.

girlfriday: Aaaaaaah, I just want to lock him up in that box so that Bleak Night is the only performance that stays with me. It’s that good.

javabeans: Ackkkk! You can’t SAY THAT about Lee Je-hoon!

girlfriday: The box is a metaphor, NOT literal!

javabeans: Too soon, man, too soon. Although, ironically, that might prevent him from the literal box in Secret Door, so…..

girlfriday: See, it’s a win-win!

javabeans: MOVING ON, I say Choi Jin-hyuk in It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl, which is strange because it’s probably the worst drama he’s done, but it’s the one I liked him the most in. He was so, so sweet and earnest and good and reliable all those things were really hot.

girlfriday: Even more than Gumiho Daddy? I dunno…

javabeans: Okay, somebody may have a bad boy thing more than somebody else. Me, I liked him being devoted and responsible.

girlfriday: BORING.

javabeans: He was like Se-jong in Persevere, Gu Hae-ra, but less angsty! Goddamn, if only Daddy’s Girl weren’t so G-rated. He got maybe one good piggyback ride and that was it, but at least it was with Moon Chae-won. And then he had to go ruin it with Heirs and Emergency Couple.

girlfriday: I guess I do have a bad boy thing, because I found Lee Sang-yoon so dull until he was Ha Woo-jin in Liar Game.

javabeans: He should never do anything else. Because I’m not so sure he has it in him to pull a repeat in something else.

girlfriday: I sort of think that about Jung Eun-ji, even though I still really really like her. It’s just that nothing she’s done since Answer Me 1997 is even remotely close to the awesomeness of her debut.

javabeans: This just highlights how choosing the right project is as important as doing a good job in it, because no matter how great you are, do I really want to see Yoochun being a cop three times in a row? And I say that out of love! Even if I let him out of his sageuk princey box, I’d want a different kind of role for him, regardless of how good Sensory Couple may/may not be.

girlfriday: But… but… I love that sageuk princey box, especially for Yoochun! I loved his nerdy scholar in Sungkyunkwan Scandal.

javabeans: Nooooo, I meant Rooftop Prince, obviously, because what are you smoking? He was so awesome and hilarious as the haughty tracksuit-wearing prince/chaebol/hobo!

girlfriday: What. You’re the one who’s smoking something. How can you prefer the goofy, clueless, childish, not-quite-all-there guy with troll hair to the adorable perfect scholar boy?

javabeans: I think you just answered your own question. How is this not obvious? Well, I guess on the upside, at least we’ll never fight over men?

girlfriday: Okay, it’s a tough job, but I’ll take all the bad boys, rebels, vampires, and misfits out of your hair. Since you clearly don’t want to be bothered by hotness. You can have all the dim, sweet nerds.

javabeans: Yes, please. Thank you.

girlfriday: One more friendship preserved.

I was reading this article on Ji Chang wook in regards to intimacy scenes in healer and there are some hilarious comments, how Ji Chang wook is so hot he could have chemistry with a tree and one person actually dared to say how they didn't see any chemistry between Jcw and pmy and was effectively shut down. Pretty much what happened here, except you got ignored on DB it's like no one sees your negative comment.one thing I'm grateful for on DB is that we don't insult each other when there's a difference of opinion.

I agree to all of this! The Secret door reference though. Oh gosh, how harsh. Hehe. I guess the only person I'm fine seeing in different roles would be Lee Junki. I liked him in everything he's played.

It's Okay, Daddy's Girl is a really weird drama. It's obviously not strong plot-wise and the acting isn't that good for all the actors but there's something there that pulls you in. I didn't get much from watching that drama but I felt happy and satisfied at the end of it. Actually, my all time favorite drama scene is from that drama. Haha.

I watched Sung Joon first in Shut Up Flower Boy Band, then in White Christmas, then most recently in I Need Romance 3... He kinda sports the same hairstyle in all three, which are all reminiscent of his rocker character in SUFBB, and even the same sort of long, billow-y coats! A'way, in my heart-of-hearts, rocker boy he will remain...

Sigh Jung Eun Ji, when you hit career peak with your debut. Although, if she let herself be type casted like Min Do Hee she'd probably do a really good job.

The thing is, I know she has a really good knack at not only envisioning the character but how the scene would look and feel. But even if the next director appreciates that, she may not find a role that fits her so perfectly.

1. Yoon Eun-hye - Go Eun-chan (Coffee Prince)

- Basically the combo of top notch writing/dialogue and a good PD to get the best performance out of YEH.

Just too bad that YEH's subsequent projects haven't even been close in terms of writing and PD.

And while Gong Yoo is a talented actor - he will 1st and foremost be Choi Han-kyul (pretty much goes for the rest of the cast even if many of the others have gone on to larger, if not lead roles).

2. Cha Seung-won - Dokko Jin (The Greatest Love)

CSW has done everything to thrillers to historical fare, but he always had his roots in comedy which is why the character of Dokko Jin was so perfect for him (he could do the combo of funny outrageousness and the serious, more dramatic moments.

DJ and "Ding-dong" - still one of the greatest Bro-mances in K-drama land despite the age difference.

3. Shin Mina - Miho (MGIAG)

While Shin Mina has shown a similar combo of cuteness and hotness in earlier projects like the film "Madeleine" and the K-drama "Punch", the Hong sisters created their most loveable female character w/ Miho.

Shin Mina is one of the few Korean actresses who can do cute (and not the cloying, fake, annoying cute that so many do) and sexy (one of the few others being Jeon Ji-hyun, esp. when she was younger).

4. Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa as "dad" and "mom" in both AM 1997" and AM 1994.

And while I really liked both, have to say would like to freeze the characters in 1997 (esp. Chilbongie, Haitai, Jo Yoon-jin and Samcheonpo).

5. Kim Tae-hee as Lee Seol ("My Princess") and Song Seung-heon as Park Hae-young.

KTH gave a top notch performance and SSH did what he can do best (play the straight/romantic lead in a romcom).

6. Lee Yeon-hee as Oh Ji-young ("Miss Korea") - like KTH in MP, LYH gave a top notch performance.

7. Kim Ji-hoon (Joseon X-Files) - while he has done a lot of other stuff, KJH actually looks better in Sageuk garb and w/ longer locks than in modern garb/hairstyles and Joseon X-Files enabled him to give his deepest, most reflective acting.

8. Jung Yumi has done too many great performance to pick one, but Kim Seul-gi and Yoon Hyun-min stood out in "Discovery of Love" and Kim Ji-seok stood out in INR2012.

Yes. Yes. I agree. I agree with all of this. All of the desired boxed characters too.

Sung Joon...I keep waiting for another badass rebellious lead role to come his way. No more of this second lead clean cut nonsense. LSY - play liar game forever. SSR from liar game too is awesome. LSG - king2heart. Shin MinAh - gumiho. all of them.

Also please keep Im Joo Hwan on Tamra's island. :)

Also, pretty much all the characters from white christmas too. I haven't seen them nearly as awesome as they were there. not counting Sung Joon of course.

I agree with you about Lee Sang-Joon. I first saw him in Liar Game where's he's all serious, but then he smiled with his eye-smile and dimples and I was like "Hello! where did this come from?"

Currently I'm watching him in "Life is Beautiful" where he's smiling all the time, plays a sweet guy, and has his hair spiked up. It's like a totally different guy.

I don´t want to keep anyone in a box, cause the most awesome heroes suffered enough already. They had enough restrictions and obstacle, they deserve and have earned their freedom. and for example, there is not much point keeping Do Min joon in a box, he can teleport.

I got curious when you said you wanted to keep Yoon Shi Yoon as Enrique forever so I tried watching Flower Boy Next Door. Darn it! I'm already at episode 7...

And I never knew Kim Ji Hoon is in there too. He's a really funny guy. Plus Il Lac omg.

The fear of being ruined by future projects. Is that why we hardly see the ‘pioneers’ of korean wave in small screen anymore? Hello winter sonata guy, won bin and song hye kyo. They have the harder task of finding the next perfect project. On the other hand choi ji woo and stairway to heaven guy did appear again but their dramas were not to my taste. Happy that successful bright girl jang hyuk and jang nara are active/active again

Haha this is the best thread I've read here so far!
I agree with everything but for me I loved Lee Sang Yoon in Jung Yi Goddess of Fire more than Liar Game. They were THE OTP!
And Jin Hyuk. That is hard! IODG or Gumiho? GAH both were perfect!
