Kim Jung-eun headlines new drama as ajumma vigilante
by girlfriday
I guess in hindsight, Kim Jung-eun (Oohlala Spouses) was smart to turn down the SBS weekend drama My Heart Twinkle Twinkle, legal disputes and all, because that show is regularly pulling in 2% ratings (pretty abysmal, when successful weekenders sometimes break 30-40%). It also frees her up to headline a new MBC drama called Make a Woman Cry, as a cop-turned-ajumma-hero. It sounds like a fun role for her that runs the gamut from dramatic to comedic, all in one unusual character.
The new weekender comes from the writer of I Summon You, Gold and the PD of historical dramas Gu-am Heo Jun and Kye Baek, and stars Kim Jung-eun as a former cop. She was once a detective in the violent crimes unit, but following the death of her only child, she quits her job and sets up a snack shop on the corner of her son’s school. It’s her way of trying to hold onto the memory of her lost child, and she works tirelessly not to forget him.
But her detective instincts can’t really be shut off, and she ends up saving some kids in danger, and it’s the story of how she becomes an Ajumma Hong Gil-dong (in other words, a superhero), who protects kids. Really, you should’ve named the drama Ajumma Hong Gil-dong. I’d watch that show in a heartbeat.
The drama will be about her transformation into an ajumma hero of the people, as well as her investigation into the circumstances surrounding her son’s death, and her gradual acceptance of her loss. It sounds offbeat but full of strong emotional undercurrents, and I can already picture Kim Jung-eun being all of the disparate elements — tough cop, wacky ajumma, grieving mother — so hopefully the drama will bring those qualities together in a compelling way.
Make a Woman Cry comes after Rosy Lovers on Saturdays and Sundays in April.

That sounds like a great drama - hopefully it would turn out well.
As for the "DeepFriedVegetableChicken" drama...it's like alien organism have taken over certain characters and the Doormat fairy rules supreme. The fairy in question being currently hit over the head by BigBird's carcass wielded by the AggressiveJerk fairy.

I watched the first episode not knowing anything about the drama and purely because I was bored. I did not go back for episode 2. It was dreadful.

Oh I'm excited for this one! After reading the synopsis, I'm instantly reminded of Jo Min-Ja from Healer. From the loss of a child to quitting from the police force to never resisting that detective instinct.
I like Kim Jung-Eun, and I'm pretty sure she can pull this off. :)

I feel like bada$$ ajummas are having a moment. Spy also has Jaejoong's former North Korean spy mom, described as being a better spy than Jaejoong is.
I'm enjoying it. Lots of great middle-aged actresses getting juicy parts.

SBS weekend dramas are basically where ratings go to die, I'm convinced of it. (also none of their dramas have remained long-term watchable, they're either totally makjang like Endless Love or lacking any semblance of plot).
Ajumma Hong Gil-dong should be a drama title. Why don't they make it one!

The premise sounds promising. I love strong women characters who can kick some butt and there's not nearly enough of them in Kdramas.

I was really excited about all of it, and then I read Saturday and Sunday :/
The only weekend dramas I have liked have been from KBS.
But I really like the premise for this one, so I hope it turns out to be good.
