Kim Ji-won as Yoochun’s potential co-star in Sensory Couple

I have good news, and even better news. I’m not sure which is which, but I’ll let you decide: One, the drama formerly known (and laughed at) as The Girl Who Sees Smells has decided to rename itself Sensory Couple, and two, after courting Suzy, who did not take the role, the show is now in talks to cast Kim Ji-won (Gap-dong, Heirs) to headline opposite Yoochun.

I do like Suzy, a lot actually, but it’s kind of funny to me how much I like her despite not caring for her acting very much (she does well in cute or funny roles, like in Big). On the other hand I both like Kim Ji-won AND her acting, and think she’s got a nice ability to make even annoying characters relatable. I wouldn’t say she’s quite underrated because I do think she gets recognized for having acting talent, but it’ll be nice to see her scoring a lead role.

A source with SBS confirmed that Kim Ji-won is a contender for the role but is not a lock, with final decisions still to be made. The drama is based on a webtoon called Girl Who Sees Smells, which is pretty self-explanatory in that the lead has the extrasensory ability to visualize smells, which sounds like every stoner’s dream come true. The drama deals with a “Bar Code Murder” case, which arose three years ago and caused our hero to lose both his little sister and his sensory abilities. (So he has no senses… and the heroine has extra senses. Of course.) The heroine is in an accident with him and “miraculously survives,” but loses her memory in the process. I’m going to guess her sensory powers will be important in solving the case and/or soothing his trauma, but right now I’m left to guess at how these hallucinations could be a functional skill. Maybe this is a drug-trafficking drama and she’s like a police dog? Or better yet, there’s food involved, which seems like a much more palatable (hur) way to go.

Sensory Couple will be a Wednesday-Thursday drama on SBS and follows Hyde, Jekyll, Me. It premieres in April.

YEAAYYYY I love her so much in Stand Up!! But since then she never got lead role and always play supporting role for idols. T_T

Ironically Stand Up was supposed to be Dream High Rival too which Suzy played. Now She got role which Suzy was prev offered too LOL

OMG me too! I first saw her in Stand Up and she was so weird and out of place (in a good way). But then she played annoying characters in To The Beautiful You and Heirs so I stop watching her. This is the opportunity to see her quirkiness all over again ^^

But DB, I heard her agency has denied the casting rumor. They said they never received the offer. Is that true? And does Park Yoochun has confirmed the drama offer yet?

I don't know why took them so long to lock in the casts, but they really need to hurry if they're targeting early April premiere.

Oh yes, now that you've mentioned it, casting seems to take really long, which is pretty odd. Makes me wonder if the script isn't attractive enough...

wait, it's not been confirmed?

What is with the rumours of all these promising young actresses - first Kang Sora, now Kim Ji-won - being offered drama lead roles and then their agencies denying the offers ever happened? It's like giving me what I want and then snatching it away :(

In the meantime we have to suffer through dramas led by Jin Se Yeon, Shin Se Kyung and Go Sung Hee while the ones who can actually act like Kang So Ra, Im Joo Eun, Kim Seul Gi... have to take a backseat in underdeveloped second female leads. Why doesn't Korea like their talented young actresses? This is puzzling.

I'd be interested in checking it out for the weird sensory issues and for the actors.

One of my daughter's favorite books is called A Mango Shaped Space, about a girl with synesthesia, which is a real thing, and this drama seems to be using a similar/same idea about a mixing up of the senses. I enjoyed the book and find the topic interesting.

Yeah I was just about to comment that the girl's ability in the drama sounds similar to this book, which I recently studied for my teacher training course!

For anyone that doesn't know, synesthesia is a real condition where your senses are slightly blended. For example, in the aforementioned book, the girl associates colours with letters and sounds.

Synesthesia is certainly a refreshing change from the mental disorder theme of late, and I'm looking forward to checking it out for that reason. I wonder if I'm the ONLY person who really, really LIKED "The Girl Who Sees Smells" as a title? Fun, VERY different and instantly informative. Unlike the boringly safe, anodyne "Sensory Couple", which actually sounds like they're trying to give the Drama a paranormal vibe.

I actually liked the premise and the weird title too, even if I teased it. I said this last time, but still, whether the writing will be up to par concerns me more.

Sensory Couple seems like it would be a 17+ rom-com and have a poster with the little black boxes covering certain things. Which could be equally funny, but yunno, irrelevant to this.

I liked the old title, too! Reminded me of a book I read about synesthesia many years ago: The Man Who Tasted Shapes.

I actually liked it too. I thought the title was quirky and cute. Plus, it's an apt description of the topic, synesthesia. Sensory Couple is boring. There are so many ways to do cute and unique titles that reference synesthesia. Like the synesthesia-related books I've read... The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake. A Mango-Shaped Space. Wednesday is Indigo Blue. The Man Who Tasted Shapes.

Yay for Kim Ji-Won though! In the case that she does take the part, I'll be really happy. She deserves a leading role.

They're both very good at playing good and 'bad' characters, though at least part of that was a result of having to spend years languishing in second lead purgatory.

I like how every single comment here is so positive and happy about her casting.

I also notice how the "don't criticise bad actresses! you only celebrate when oppas get. lead roles" so called feminist brigade are 100 percent silent and will probably never admit the existence of posts like this on dramabeans. It's like they never think that the people being cheated by those crappy actress castings we complain about, are girls like Kim Ji Won. It's on behalf of girls like them we complain, because jobs should be done by people who can do them (can act) and not by people who have sponsors and can't act. Not because of oppa hotness, sorry.

W is there not to be silent about? A reasonably well qualified and well regarded actress is being considered for a role in an upcoming drama. Nobody is getting bashed as a result of this posting. Then wouldn't the next thing to do be to sit back and wait for the drama to air so that it can be enjoyed? Unless you consider it obligatory for all readers of this news to post a congratulatory message because this time it's a good actress?

Everybody has his or her own way of reacting to news posted on dramabeans. Just as more vocal readers will post their thoughts and reactions on every drama casting, there are also readers who will just move on after reading the news. Without posting anything.

"so called feminist brigades"

Hi! If you're referring to the commenters like me who responded in the last post about this drama (concerning the thread about Jin Se Yeon) , I'm one of them. Or probably not since:

"are 100 percent silent and will probably never admit the existence of posts like this on dramabeans."

Seeing as how I commented positively and acknowledged this possibly-casting news and hey look my comment is just above yours.

I like both of actresses and I'm totally psyche for Kim Ji Won if she does get the role.

I don't think either you or @lc understood whatI tried to say. It's really comon in posts where a crappy actor is criticised, for people to come in and claim we only criticise women and have no support for them.......on such threads, people ignore how much support db community shows to actresses who actually have talent, and ignores the existence of posts like this where everyone is happy for Kim Ji Won. Because it's easier to pretend someone is getting criticism for being a woman, than forbeing useless st what is supposed to be their job.

And since you bring up the Jin Se Yeon mentioning thread......I find it strange that one small joke about the woodenness of an actress so widely acknowledged to be bad (by knets, inets, dramabeans, any articles about bad acting or that drama) leads to so much outrage and talk of "hate" and how comparing to an inanimate object is disrespectful.....db commenters have called Song Seung Hoon The Hand Towel for years and made fun of his lack if acting skill and repeatedly say he's useless as an actor and only good to look at and objectify. Why is one leading to such outrage while the other does not? I feel like I know the answer but I find it strange that bad actresses are so strongly defended on this site by some.

Don't make tricky comparisions. SSH has been long enough in this industry but hasn't showed much improvement in acting. Meanwhile, JSY is just 20 and has got about 4 major roles so far...

Similar to Suzy's case. Why don't you ask why idol actors get lesser bashing than idol actresses? Why don't you ask why non-idol actors get defended why their female costars get blamed though they appear in the same crappy project with same crappy acting? This "justice" makes me sick.

"Tricky" comparisons? My whole comment is about how ACTRESSES in the industry are being robbed of jobs they have the talent for by the casting of people like JSY and how db commenters get yelled at by people like you for noting that. Kim Ji Won at 20 and with the same number of roles undervher belt, showed more talent in her little finger than JSY has ever showed in a filmography of five years. People like you who defend such incompetent castings under the excuse of feminism......I don't understand really.

and you think male idols don't get criticised for bad acting? Please go back and read the news of every single male idol casting over the last year - forget the legendary bad ones like Jung Yunho and Taecyeon, people even had negative reactions to Im Siwan's casting in Misaeng with a few exceptions. It was lonly after idols like Siwan and Jaejoong turned out decent performances that people praised them. So please stop trying to twist facts to pretend women are always the victims and we don't also criticise men when they do badly.

0

You have actually provided the answer yourself. SSH has had so many years to show that he is a bad actor but he is at most being made fun of and just called out for being a vase (empty of substance). Does he get bashed when he gets lead roles in dramas? Any insinuations that he must have had a sponsor to keep getting roles despite his lack of acting skills?

And don't forget that his nickname The Hand Towel is an indirect pun on his name, so it can be considered as a joke. Block of wood isn't.

Does Song Seung Hun also have a reputation for signing one drama in the middle of filming another and leaving a crew to hang in the middle of live shoots? Three times? Forcing the writersand crew to make all kinds of changes to accommodate her in already tough conditions? I dislike bad acting but I really despise it when it comes with purposeful unprofessionalism. Any other actress' career would have ended for such behaviour, Han Ye Seul got a broadcast ban even, but this girl getting role after role is deeply unfair to any actress who works on a drama and actually stays committed to it instead of chasing after other lead roles. Maybe think of that the next time you say she's getting "hate".

0

@pigsnout, please get your facts right and compare apples against apples and oranges against oranges.

The argument has been about how bad actors and actresses are criticised differently so why has the subject changed to the unprofessional conduct of an actress? That is a topic for another day.

Also calling people out for using harsh language or insinuations on bad actresses and their castings is in no way a defense of incompetent actresses.

0

@pigsnout

Grouping certain commenters as a 'feminist brigade' when they react to comments like these would certainly get them to respond. Like you said, every single comment was positive well until your thread was posted. Was calling out silent readers or delurkers (or those part of the so-called feminist brigade) really necessary when for all we know they could have been happy for the casting news too, probably even ecstatic, since a young and rising actress is possibly being considered for a lead role? When they just freely opted not to comment?

Or, I'm guessing this comment would always be unnecessary since in the next casting news, this thread or a similar one would just start all over again. Since a single post in here couldn't just stay a 100% (nope, that's an exaggeration and frankly impossible in any public forum) atleast 90% positive. And since, Jin Se Yeon is just that bad of an actress that she would be mentioned (or obviously implied) in every post like this or some are just really so pressed that you would think that the girl destroyed a nation or something worse in her previous life. Well, I'm looking forward to the discussions in the next one.

It's close to being common for female readers to prefer a bad male actor over a bad actresse. It's not always an issue as long as it's not some empty critique about how ugly actress A is shouldn't be cast alongside hot actor B. And comments about "sponsors" are just cheap.

I would be THRILLED if K im Ji-won actually did get her first leading role out of this - she's one of the gems of the '92er actresses (Go Ah-sung, Park Eun-bin, Han Groo, and her) and far too good to be stuck playing second lead forever.

Like jb noted, she has the gift of making even an unlikable character sympathetic. And given even the smallest scrap of anything to work with, she seizes hard on it and really shines - Gap-dong frustrated me because of the way she was written, but the way she played her character saved it for me.
