Hyde, Jekyll, Me: Episode 12
by girlfriday
I like the emotional depth that we get when Robin gets backed into a corner. A journey towards healthy acceptance for Seo-jin becomes a life-and-death fight for Robin, and now everyone else is caught between them whether they want to be or not. And after being convinced that Robin is the good one and Seo-jin is the bad one, there might be yet another twist around the bend…

EPISODE 12 RECAP
The video message that Seo-jin put online does the trick, and Tae-joo is watching it the very next day. In it, Seo-jin very calmly tells him that this seemed like the best way to get a message out to him, and that he’s begun to remember their past.
He admits to his cowardice back then and apologizes, and says that there’s an unfortunate side effect of remembering the events of that day: Other memories have surfaced too, things that only Seo-jin knows. He asks for a chance to sit down and talk about the truth that he now remembers.
Tae-joo watches skeptically, gnarling through his teeth that it’s all lies. He doesn’t seem very convinced though, and I have a feeling that curiosity will get the better of him.
Secretary Kwon is rather proud of Seo-jin when he hears about it over the phone, and it’s so adorable how Seo-jin cringes like a teenager when Secretary Kwon gushes that it was a bold move.
He even stands by like a proud father while Chairman Dad watches the video and kicks up a fuss. And just as Secretary Kwon predicted, cousin Seung-yeon finds the video on his own, Seo-jin stalker that he is.
Hana’s friends tell her to watch the video as well, and she realizes now what Seo-jin meant about trusting himself and facing his past. Seo-jin comes back to ask if she doesn’t want to return to Seoul with him now, figuring that she can do her thinking anywhere. After a pause he adds, “Also, I can’t drive. Do you know how?” Chaebols.
On the drive, Hana steals a few glances at Seo-jin while he shuts his eyes, and he accuses her of hoping that Robin will show. She’s uncomfortable with this kind of talk, so he suggests food instead and they stop to eat.
They go for a walk on a tree-lined street, and Seo-jin keeps just a few paces behind her, remembering their night on the farm when she thought he was Robin. Hana stops mid-way and whirls around to ask why he keeps walking behind her, and he says he likes it this way and that’s how they walked before.
He reminds her of the animal noises she kept making him call out because he was afraid of the dark woods, and she asks how he would know things that she shared with Robin. He fesses up that it was him the whole night, and sort of barrels right over her mortified realization that she confessed to liking him.
He declares matter-of-factly that she’s liked him since that night: “Liking Robin is liking me. I’ve decided to think of it that way.” She argues right away that it drives her crazy when he talks like that, because to her they feel like two totally different people. So how can he insist that they’re the same?
Seo-jin has apparently thought this through, because he counters, “Then what am I supposed to do? This is me. Robin is inside of me. I’ve spent my whole life running away from myself. But how is it love if I don’t show all of myself? If I don’t acknowledge that this is me, how can I ask to be loved?”
Well that was unexpectedly mature. He says that he’s doing the best he can to show her everything, and asking if she can love him. He leaves the choice to her and adds as an afterthought that he won’t let what happened five years ago happen again. Hm, whatever went down five years ago must’ve involved a girl?
Secretary Kwon is still beaming with pride as he arrives at the police station to deliver the good news: Chairman Dad has agreed to let the investigation go public, including the kidnapping that began it all.
Detective Na wastes no time holding a press conference, where he outline the case and flashes the only picture they have of Lee Soo-hyun, taken when he was a child around the time of the kidnapping. Tae-joo watches his childhood picture being flashed on jumbo screens in the street, and his jaw tightens in fury.
He storms home and shows Dr. Kang the video message from Seo-jin, which she watches proudly. Tae-joo still thinks that Seo-jin is putting on an act—that he’s known the truth this whole time, and is pretending to remember now. He refuses to believe that Seo-jin knows something about their kidnapping that he doesn’t, but Dr. Kang offers gently that he was young and could have blocked out some of the events too.
Tae-joo reels at that, insisting that he’s the strong one and didn’t compartmentalize his memories like Seo-jin did. He decides that Seo-jin must’ve invented another lie to hide behind, because he remembers it all.
The doorbell interrupts them, and Tae-joo is shocked to find the building’s security guard at his door to look into a noise complaint from a neighbor. Tae-joo slaps on a smile and says that he was installing some exercise equipment, which seems to convince the guard. Dammit.
Tae-joo tears back into the room to search for whatever it is that Dr. Kang might’ve used to make noise (though I find it comical how much furniture is in the room for her to throw around if she wanted). He finds the spoon tucked into her chair and asks if she was planning her escape, almost as if it were a betrayal.
Dr. Kang says that she won’t try to escape anymore, and admits that she was wrong to approach him thinking only of Seo-jin’s recovery. She assures him that she won’t leave now even if he let her go, and he suddenly looks so hopeful and childlike as he asks quietly why. She says that Seo-jin is already on his way to being healed, and now it’s Tae-joo’s turn to face the past and learn how to trust again.
Hana calls to make an appointment for that night, and Tae-joo tells Dr. Kang that Hana is a perfect example of trust. He says that she trusts him completely, and asks ominously what he might’ve convinced her of in the course of twelve hypnotherapy sessions. Shiver.
Cousin Seung-yeon finally makes himself useful and discovers that the specialist Chairman Dad is flying into the country is an expert in dissociative identity disorder. That’s enough to confirm his suspicions, and he calls an emergency board meeting before confronting Chairman Dad about it.
Seung-yeon declares that it’s his turn to run Wonderland, otherwise he’ll share his hunch about Seo-jin’s illness with the board, and leave them to do their own digging. He’s a weasel but he’s pretty smart about it; I’ll give him that. Chairman Dad is pissed, but he also reminds Seung-yeon that he never answers to threats—he even gave up his son when he was kidnapped, after all. He admits to regretting that decision, but also owns up to the fact that he can’t change himself.
The board meeting begins and Seung-yeon says that it’s time to vote on Wonderland’s director, and that Seo-jin would be the natural choice if only his health wasn’t a problem. Chairman Dad cuts in to ask for proof, but Seo-jin arrives a few minutes late and takes over to make a few announcements of his own.
Much to everyone’s shock, Seo-jin suggests that Seung-yeon should have the director position, and that he himself will be taking a six-month leave. Seung-yeon doesn’t know what to think, and wonders suspiciously what Seo-jin is up to. I’ll laugh if he turns down the job just because he’s convinced that Seo-jin is pulling Jedi mind tricks.
Seung-yeon sloooowly checks to make sure that the bathroom is empty before erupting into a hilariously childish foot-stomping dance of joy, deciding that it doesn’t matter how he got it—the job is his. He points at his reflection in the mirror before giving himself a big cheesy thumbs-up. I am so embarrassed for you right now.
Chairman Dad lays into Seo-jin for running away and giving up, deciding that he was right all along for thinking that Seo-jin would never amount to anything. Seo-jin is calm as he replies that he’s not giving up—he’s preparing for a fight.
He says that this is a fight for his life, and he’s eventually going to return everything to the way it was before the kidnapping. He says he’s going to surpass even his father’s expectations, and I love how Secretary Kwon suddenly breaks into a suppressed grin behind him. It warms my heart, it does.
Secretary Kwon holds his tongue until they reach Seo-jin’s office, and then rambles on about how he did the right thing back there. Seo-jin just looks at him like he’s a freak, but doesn’t stop him.
Secretary Kwon says that it’s hard enough to change yourself, and thinks it more impressive when you can change someone else, referring to Hana. He urges Seo-jin not to lose her, despite the Robin complication. He muses that it’s a lot like five years ago, then catches himself mid-sentence.
Seo-jin doesn’t flinch and says that this time it’s different. He admits that it is a similar situation, in that he and Robin have feelings for one woman. But he adds, “One thing is different. Me. Even if everything else is the same, I’m different. I’ve changed. If changing is love, then I love her.” Secretary Kwon just gives him a silent oooooooooh.
Tae-joo smirks to find Seo-jin at his door, and takes the opportunity to chat about going public with the case. He calls it professional curiosity when he mentions Seo-jin’s transformation, and Seo-jin agrees openly that he’s changing now in a way that he never could have before, because back then, he was lying. I think he means to himself, but naturally Tae-joo assumes the worst.
Seo-jin says that he remembers everything thanks to the recent kidnapping, and Tae-joo asks if he’s remembered anything that he’s sorry for. Seo-jin says there is—something he needs to beg forgiveness for on his knees.
Tae-joo suggests that he start with an apology to Soo-hyun, and Seo-jin says he will, but not now. Tae-joo tenses up again at that, and stares icily as Seo-jin says he recalled other memories as well, and needs to share them with Soo-hyun first.
Seo-jin tells him about confessing his condition to Hana and says that her shock must’ve been severe. But Tae-joo counters that Robin’s shock is likely even greater, pointing out that Robin will see this as an attack on his very existence. Seo-jin hadn’t thought of it that way, but Tae-joo explains how fragile Robin’s identity is, and how easily he could break if threatened. That alarms Seo-jin, and he wonders to himself if what happened five years ago could happen again.
Hana is currently asking about that very incident, and Secretary Kwon squirms in his seat. He tries to gloss over it and asks if it isn’t enough that Seo-jin has changed, but Hana repeats what Seo-jin said to her earlier, about it not being love if he couldn’t show her all of himself. She says she needs to know, love or not.
At her prodding, Secretary Kwon eventually gives in and tells her that five years ago, Robin and Seo-jin liked the same woman. They kept up the twin cover story for a while, but eventually got caught in the lie. They had to tell her the truth, and the woman reacted like she’d seen a monster and left.
Back at Tae-joo’s place, Seo-jin asks what it means that Robin could break, and Tae-joo asks if Robin has ever experienced anything traumatic before, like the loss of a loved one. He explains that for Robin, whose greatest insecurity is his identity, anything to make him anxious about that would incite a harsher reaction than in a normal person.
Secretary Kwon continues his story and tells Hana that after the woman left, Robin was so traumatized about his lack of identity that he went to see Dr. Kang and asked her to destroy him. It was basically a suicide mission, and Dr. Kang hypnotized him and got close to getting rid of Robin completely… when Terry appeared. Oh no, there’s another personality in there?
Without knowing the backstory, Tae-joo tells Seo-jin that if something were to cause Robin enough stress that he fractured, a third identity could come about. Seo-jin immediately thinks in his head, “Terry…” Tae-joo says that it’s rarer for a patient with dissociative identity disorder to only have two personalities, and asks if Seo-jin has ever encountered a third. He lies that he hasn’t.
Secretary Kwon says that Terry is violent and erratic, and that he tried to kill Dr. Kang. It took the entire security team to subdue him, and he was gone when he lost consciousness. From that moment on, Robin disappeared for five years.
Hana can’t fathom Robin having a violent alter ego, and Secretary Kwon says that Terry is the reason why Seo-jin was so careful for the last five years, so as not to hurt anyone ever again.
Tae-joo intercepts Hana on her way up to see him later that day, and takes her to a scenic spot to chat. She wants to know more about Seo-jin’s condition, and Tae-joo obliges with a very gentle explanation that it’s not unlike every person having multiple facets to their personalities. He describes all people as having light and dark sides, though Hana struggles to see it as the same thing.
Tae-joo says that there’s really only one key difference: memory. He says that for normal people, no matter how many sides there are, they remember the same experiences, but people with dissociative identity disorder can’t share the same memories, and don’t know what the other facets of themselves do or feel. He confuses me with his insightfulness. Okay, also his face. That’s part of it, I’m sure.
Tae-joo says that’s coming from his doctor side, then says he’s going to offer his thoughts on Hana’s position in all this. He says that it doesn’t matter to him if her leaving them will cause pain, because her life is what matters. He asks if love isn’t sharing the same time and memories with someone, and asks how love is possible without those things.
Hana admits that she doesn’t know, and has no idea if she’s afraid of starting or afraid of leaving, and that she can’t ignore Seo-jin and Robin’s feelings. She lets a reference to the past slip out, and when she refrains from saying any more, Tae-joo hypnotizes her to make her tell him what she knows.
Tae-joo goes straight home to gloat in front of Dr. Kang, and only needs one word to explain himself: Terry. He says he knew that there’s no such thing as someone having a split personality that only saves people and does nice things, and says that it’s time to draw out the real Robin.
Hana heads over to meet Woo-jung, and sits down with Editor Min before Woo-jung arrives. Hana tells him that she knows the truth about Robin and Seo-jin, and knows that he knows too. He’s shocked and tells her that Robin mentioned wanting to tell her, but didn’t feel ready. He admits to still finding it hard to believe most of the time.
Woo-jung happens to arrive just in time to hear them say that Robin and Seo-jin aren’t twins, and Dad is forced to tell her the truth as well. She takes it hard, and Hana ends up comforting her as she cries herself to sleep.
Robin wakes up that evening and continues to have flashes of Seo-jin’s memories, and runs back to where he last saw Hana in hopes of finding her. He calls Secretary Kwon, desperate and at his wit’s end.
Secretary Kwon sighs that he talked to Hana, and prefaces his next statement by saying that he genuinely likes Robin as a little brother. But he points out that Robin’s reality is that he can’t even get a national identification number, so how is it that he expects to take responsibility for Hana? He slumps against the wall, the question lingering on his mind.
Hana texts him asking to meet, but when he rushes to the theater, Tae-joo is there waiting, watching from the projection booth. In flashback we see that while she was hypnotized, he programmed her phone to send Robin a text.
Robin runs into the darkened theater, and Tae-joo switches on the spotlight to reveal Dr. Kang tied up in a chair, sitting eerily motionless with her back to the audience. Robin approaches and finds her unconscious, and then Tae-joo projects a series of hypnotic images on the giant screen in front of him.
The images are designed to provoke all his fears, and Robin’s expression changes as he walks toward Dr. Kang, suddenly looking very predatory. Tae-joo: “Welcome, Terry.”
Robin/Terry peers down at Dr. Kang and shakes her awake, and at the same time, Tae-joo sends Hana a video of what’s going on in the theater. She calls Robin repeatedly but he doesn’t answer, so she asks Detective Na to trace the number that sent her the video.
Back in the theater, Robin/Terry edges closer and closer to Dr. Kang until she’s backed up against a wall, still with her hands tied behind her back. He doesn’t say a word, but just raises a hand up to her throat with an impassive face.
She cries out, “Robin!” before shutting her eyes in terror, and then his eyes flicker. All of Robin’s memories of saving people flood back in, and he starts to lower his hand. Maybe Terry isn’t all that separate an identity after all?
His phone rings again, and this time he answers it. Hana pleads with him to wait just a little longer because she’s coming to him, and Robin’s eyes fill with conflicted tears. She begs him to say something, to promise that he’ll wait.
After another pause, Robin finally opens his mouth and says quietly, “I want to live.” That seems to break the dam, and he’s says shakily, “I want to live. I don’t want to disappear.” Hana begins to cry and answers, “Live. We’ll live.”
Robin sheds a tear at that, and it snaps him back into the moment. He hurriedly unties Dr. Kang’s ropes and leads her toward the door.
Tae-joo goes from shock to anger as he watches Robin switch gears, and sets off gas in the theater to make his escape. Are you just going to let her go when she can tell everyone who you really are? Maybe he has no choice at this point.
Hana and the cops arrive just as Robin leads Dr. Kang out through the emergency exit, and the police escort Dr. Kang out as she coughs and falls limp. Detective Na arrives but lets her go ahead on the ambulance, and aargh, why do I get the feeling that he’s going to regret not asking her about her kidnapper right this second?
Inside, everyone else clears away and Hana’s breath catches at the sight of Robin. He smiles back at her, and she runs to him, wrapping her arms around his waist.
They hold each other and he’s hesitant as he speaks: “I… want to live. I want to live but… I want to live as Robin. As the Robin that saves people and that you like.” Closing caption: Another day to love and love—that day is why I’m here.
COMMENTS
Poor Robin. I don’t really blame him for cracking, though it is unnerving to know that he’s got a dark side. Can a Hyde have his own Hyde? I’m sure there are million different ways that identities can fracture, but I’m fascinated by the idea that a secondary identity has his own secondary identity, like an infinite hall of mirrors. Robin seems to have a better handle on his Hyde though, almost as if they aren’t separate at all, and I can’t decide if that’s better or worse. In today’s case it’s a relief, since I don’t want Robin and Seo-jin to kill Dr. Kang and break forever. But it makes me wonder if Robin’s loss of self-control is a door to darker things, in which case his destruction isn’t just something that’s healthy for Seo-jin, but necessary to keep Terry and who knows what else out.
It’s interesting that the language used to speak of Robin’s end is destruction or disappearance, never death. It seems worse than death, the idea that you never lived in the first place, never having existed, never having left a mark. I find that I like Robin’s character so much more when he’s raw and desperate to live, than when he’s just in love or happy. I feel like he’s grasping for evidence that he’s really here, like he’s scared that he might really be a figment of imagination. And it kills me that the one thing he wants—a life as himself—is impossible. I suppose there is a chance that he’ll take over completely, but with Seo-jin no longer hiding from his problems, it doesn’t seem likely. I’m scared that he really will challenge Seo-jin for control now that he wants it badly enough, not that it would be such a bad thing for the conflict to ratchet up.
That final scene was the first time I’ve seen Hana’s emotions come through—it made me think for the first time that she might actually love Robin and risk everything to keep him here. Up until this point, I honestly didn’t feel it. Maybe there’s hope for this romance yet, now that they have something to lose. Ultimately Hana’s acceptance and interpretation of Seo-jin’s disorder will have a lot to do with how this relationship goes, because right now she could still swing either way—Seo-jin could become the enemy to her happily ever after with Robin, or she could warm up to the idea that they’re the same guy.
I still feel weird about the latter even though I know it’s perfectly logical, mostly because I agree with Tae-joo (when he’s not being evil). The fact that Seo-jin and Robin can’t share memories is definitely what keeps them separate, but then when he poses the question of love that way, it also makes me wonder if memory is as important to love as it seems. Because if amnesia in dramaland has taught me anything, it’s that absence of memory has no hold over love. The fact that Seo-jin and Robin fell in love with the same girl once before also supports the idea that they’re the same deep down, that maybe they can’t help always loving the same person. That said, it does sit better with me that Robin is beginning to share in Seo-jin’s memories, because that’s the best of both worlds—both sides of one person existing, but un-compartmentalized. It doesn’t lessen Robin’s existential fears or the weight of his conflict any, but it gives me hope that there’s a way out of this that doesn’t end in tears.

Thanks for the recap, gf! I have to wonder, at the ending scene, was it Robin or Seo-Jin? It sounded like Robin by the way he said "Hana sshi". But if it was Robin, he would've hugged her back because he needs that comfort she gives him that everything will be okay and that there is someone who cares about his existence. I want to say that it is Seo-Jin because of how his eyes were- Robin has a very innocent, youthful, wide eyed look; Seo-Jin has the smaller, more analytical and emotion poured in them. Also, how he said "I want to live like Robin"...? Any other thoughts on this?

Oh I thought I was the only one who thought it might've been Seo-jin! It's the way he hesitates when she hugs him, like he's not sure what to say or do. It could just be the shock of realizing what he was about to do - as in almost kill Dr. Kang. Robin had to go through a violent phase and his desperation was evident. It could've been his fear that stopped him from hugging Hana back or looking a little less lively and wide-eyed.
But... he could be Seo-jin too! That's what I personally want. Seo-jin wants to live as himself as much as he wants to live as Robin because to him they're both just one person. That could possibly be the reason he says "I want to live as Robin, the one you like."

Remember what the secretary said to Hana, about five years ago.. after terry appeared, robin hadn't appeared for five years, until now..
So, maybe that event is repeated now? If yes, it could be Seo jin that appeared at the end of the episode.

I figured Robin was just a little shell shocked as to why he didn't hug her. Possibly realizing that he had a darker side (Terry) may have stunned him. However after watching that scene again I can also see where he could be Seo Jin. Although that makes for some quick personality changes which are unusual for them, it is very possible. Seo Jin doesn't seem enjoy his life much. I'm split as to who it was.

I don't think he was Seo Jin, to be honest.
I watched again that scene after reading your comments and I still think he is Robin, mostly because the subs said "I want to live as me... as Robin." If in the next episode Hyun Bin was portraying Seo Jin there, I'll applaud his acting.

Omo!!! Yes!!! I just saw the episode and to me it is Seo Jin!! Because when he answered he said he wanted to live, he didn't want to dissapear. We have to keep in mind that TaeJoon has told him that the main personality will be the one dissapearing not Robin. Robin knows that as well, the only reason he has been acting like crazy, is because what he was told of Dr.Kang finding a cure to make him go away for good. Now going back to Seojin he was shocked when he saw Hana standing there crying and worried about him "Robin" that's why when she ran up to him and hugged him,he was devastated knowing she thinks it's Robin. That's why he say "I want to live..I want to live as me, I want to live as Robin the one who saves lives and the one that you have feeling for" This is already telling us that is Seojin which breaks my heart ㅠㅠ..He doesn't want to dissapear and have Robin take over, instead he just wants to live even if it means to be just Robin, still having his memories..Ughh the writter better have a great ending where SeoJin can be healed and Robin won't just fade away in the process.

It's told that a personality can make another personality appear, a trigger to fracture another things to cope with the memory
the point I can argue or at least ask is about them not having the memory,
so this case is maybe the new one/Terry is the real personality and he make an alter to cope up with happiness and cold state (even thought the jerk behave is never a good to shown)
then, an alter is needed in term to make the main personality can still exist and adjusted in the world, but SJ never really needed any help in his live or he did?
when they feel threaten and wake up by hypnotists is even more weird because it make me feel that the 10 ep before just started now and the revelation for having an danger personality is anti climax to the point I already had suspect it. If Terry really that eager to live, is that because of love? how love can remain in memory,
I don't want love to have conquer it all cause the problem is weather he exist are not die and wanted to suicide is just make the DID seems to broken,
Robin understand more but how is he didn't have the memory?
Terry appear to make Robin still alive but why? why he didn't be one that live the body?
maybe I sounds like a party pooper, but explanation will help me join next party without thinking too much

Okay, so now Dr. Kang is free,(and without so much as a wrinkle in her pristine white lab coat) and SHE is the only one who knows Soo Hyun's real identity. Did Soo Hyun/Tae Joo really plan on Dr. Kang being rescued, or did he want Terry to kill her? If the latter, how does he now maintain his cover and continue his diabolical machinations?
I really had to roll my eyes when the auditorium began to fill with toxic gas at the press of Tae Joo's handy remote control. I mean COME ON! Maybe I could suspend disbelief when it came to Dr. Darkness being able to, without ever raising suspicion, rig a long abandoned warehouse with so many high tech toys, but this venue certainly can't have been so easily prepared for the stunt he pulled in this episode. The power he wields is almost cartoonish in its proportions. And I have to guffaw at the way he continues to outwit EVERYONE even as he obviously becomes more and more unhinged.
Terry certainly does amp up the interesting, though, doesn't he? I guess he's the Mr. Hyde, which would make Robin the Dr. Jeckle., and Seo Jin the "I" in this drama. At least that makes the title make sense.
unhinged.

Despite the flaws in this show (there are many), I am truly enjoying it. It is interesting and sad, that people really suffer from a disorder so destructive as DID. Before watching this, I had no knowledge of DID whatsoever. I know that all the portrayals of this disorder may not be 100% correct (it is a kdrama of course) but I still find it informative and I hope that the worlds general population can become more aware of this disorder so that more research can be done to help these people who suffer from it. Again, I don't know much about DID, but from what I can tell, HyunBin is doing a fantasic job in this role. He has done a great job at showing the difference between Robin and SeoJin and he has also done well at portraying their similarities. All in all, I think this is a beautiful show and will continute to watch it despite its flaws.

Is it just me or is Robin's face at the very end kind of creepy? Is it really Robin or is it Terry??
Very mixed feelings about this episode.... I totally loved Seo-jin's emotional development and confessions (and Seung-yeon gleeful bathroom freakout) but it really felt like something was missing tension-wise. Dr. Kang's rescue and the disarming of Terry were very anticlimactic. The anticipation for next weeks episode would be bigger if the episode ended with uncertainty about whether Terry were going to hurt Dr. Kang or not.
And seriously, gas again? Is Tae-joo becoming a super villan. XD

Hi! I also think is Terry. I mean, it looked as if Robin requested help from Terry to survive against SeoJin. Or maybe even shared His memories with Terry or Terry found out Robin's (memories that is) and fojnd a way to blend in in the love square? Hehe.
(^_^) Can't wait for next episode.

I feel like I'm losing interest in HJM very quickly. There's something really confusing and disjointed about this drama, not to mention I'm starting to really notice the flaws in the acting as well as the characters.
I have no clue how this drama is going to finish on a satisfying note.

Even when I'm holidaying, I make sure to read your recap GF, because its always so insightful.
I think this is the first time I really felt love for Robin as an identity of his own. Of course I'm forever Team Seo-jin, but Robin's desperation was so brilliantly executed. It's so scary to see him have a different side to himself which is surprisingly more interesting than having a new personality altogether. I think he'll be heading to the dark side the more his insecurities are fanned. In the end, I'm sure it will all come down to who Hana wants to be with and right now, she definitely isn't one to believe Robin and Seo-jin are the same.
Tae-joo continues to be bipolar and awesome. He makes my head spin with the back and forth; one moment honest and reliable in his words, other times manipulative and stubborn. I can't wait till Dr. Kang outs him because that would definitely change dynamics all round.
Lastly, I love Seo-jin's changing attitude the most. His confidence and honesty makes me so proud. I'm glad he's fighting for the life he deserves to live instead of hiding away from his traumas like he had in the past. I'm not sure if its really Hana who brought about this change, or Tae-joo, actually. But whoever initiated it doesn't matter because I'm just happy to see Seo-jin learn to save himself.

I have to say I agree that Dr. TJ may be helping more than he wanted. Not just the kidnapping, but the way he talks to Seo jin and Robin. His insight seems pretty spot on, except for the fracturing he is hoping for he may be actually helping them heal. Not to mention he may become a known common enemy later on.

The whole third personality thing is making it all the more entertaining. And finally they explain the event that happened 5 years ago. Now we're tracking of what happen 5 years ago AND 15 years ago. So many missing pieces and my guesses about what happened to Seo-Jin and Soo Hyun are as good as anyone else's.
Ughh, the hypnosis theme is complicating things and making me question everything! For all we know, Dr. Kang was hypnotized to report a totally different story to the police so Soo Hyun isn't so worried about her escape. Part of his scheme, perhaps?
Hana…oh Hana, I thought you had it hard with the TWO but now you may have to deal with three. And from the sounds of it, she'll have to deal with Tae-Joo/Soo Hyun soon too.
I'm glad they are exploring more of Robin's story versus only Seo-Jin as the main identity. Can't wait for next week's episodes. More twists to come? Ughhh…I have so many questions after this episode. So many flaws in a show but it's such a great guilty pleasure for me. I personally think Hyun Bin is doing an amazing job and that OST though!

I am totally expecting Dr. Kang not to be able to remember anything. He had too much time with her not to have done something. I will actually be shocked if she tells who it is or decides to keep her promise and doesn't rat him out.
Did everyone else keenly watch the uniforms who put her in the ambulance? I'm pretty sure Dr. TJ didn't put on a uniform and steal her away again.

I too like robin more when he's raw and desperate.
It makes him real vs a too perfect nice guy. His conflict is real too. He's fighting for not only future existence but proof of existence too. Since if he is just a part of seojin, his separate identity can be seen as never existed.
It's a nice conflict and emotional.
Seojin is also surprising me with the way he's handling things with maturity. It's a little abrupt with the storytelling but I can accept the flaw since the warehouse rescue was to show someone came for him (vs no one 15 yrs ago) and he saved the person (vs abandonment) to trigger his desire to stop and start living.
It should have been shot better for more tension but I'll let it go partly due to hyun bin awesome acting. Also Taejoo makes a good villain.
The main thing that is hurting the drama is the romance arc with Hana being so passive and boring. I don't like her reaction to the DID, shock in 1 episode is fine but in 2? Her expression are always similar with no layers from one scene to the other. I agree that the last scene was the best for her. But there was hardly any build up. I understand that the writing is weak overall for her as opposed to seojin robin. But sometimes the interpretation of the role also makes a difference vs screen time. Look at secretary chan, he hardly have much screen time but he is spot on. His love for seojin apparent, almost fatherly and protective. He makes me smile more in the 15mins screen time he probably have in total for the entire drama vs Hana. You might have limited good lines, but u build the character from the way you talk, the way you walk or even the things u hold (eg seojins chaebol walk, the more teenager light walking by robin, his hand gestures, SJ little smirks and change of tone when's he evil vs good, secretary's always holding a notebook), there is nothing of Hana that defines her. - unless you are telling me her impassive look is one. *face palm*
She is really hard to root for.

Yea. Han Ji Min is doing a poorly job at executing her part. Will avoid her future projects since I don't want to get my energy sucked out by her. Even if the writing is weak, if she can at least show some emotions and change her damn monotone voice, I will like her. But nope, she still maintains her monotone voice and blank face for every single scene in every single episode. I think she's probably regretting on taking this role which is why she is torturing us with her dull acting.

I totally agree... I mean, Hana, come on girl, it's episode 12 already! Honestly, where were you the previous episodes? She really has to step up. Everyone else is making way too much improvement in their characters. While, she, on the other hand, is the same bland character that she was since day 1. And I agree, even if the writing, directing or whatever is poor, she can at least make her character her own. So disappointing, Hyun Bin is really trying his best in this drama.

I completely agree with you.
Whether it's Seo-jin, Robin, or Tae-joo, Hana has become too inactive just waiting around to be figuratively (and sometimes literally) drug-around by one of the three. Her reactions and facial expressions have all become the same no matter the situation. You would expect her to be at least a little angry about being so massively lied to but she just passively takes it all in.
The way this drama was advertised as typical love triangle with the twist being that the two competing men were really one person (the humour lying in the fact, to put it delicately, that he would literally be cockblocking himself) lead me to expect (and hope for) more cliched drama tropes. But so far it just kind of feels like Hana has been catfished. I really wanted her to feel a little more for Seo-jin before the truth bomb hit.
I liked Hana in the beginning but now I'm started to get annoyed with her lack of action. I really hope that she can become a more contributing character to the story outside of just being there for Seo-jin/Robin.

I'm loving the show and all the new developments, but I agree with you about Ha Na. If you just focus on her story, you will get a real feel for why her "blank face," cool reactions are really inappropriate at this point....this is a woman who recently lost her father (which seems to have been her only family), she is constantly living with the burden of keeping her whole circus troup employed under constant threat of being kicked out, someone has tried to kill her several times and she is constantly being put under hypnosis to force her to relive each and every attempt. To make things worse, her boyfriend is very ill and struggling right in front of her face, with no way she can help him. WHY would she be so doggone calm at this point???!!!

It was really strange ...Dr. Kang shouted Robin and he came to his senses. I really didn't get that part. And how did Tae leave Dr. Kang loose when he has unfinished business. If Jang hana falls for seo jin and seo jin indeed overcomes each and every fear of his, robin would no longer have any reason to exist. The entry of third personality, Terry was really unexpected..now I understand why everyone was freaking out in the beginning when robin appeared. They were afraid that terry might show up too. I'm just eager to know till which extent robin would go to 'Exist' I want both Seo jin and robin to exist but sadly that's not possible. If it has to be any one of them, I vote for Seo jin. I just really like it when things don't happen as you predict, you get more eager to watch. HJI <3 OMG, this is so exciting.

because robin is under hypnosis, when dr. kang called for his name, he snapped automatically because he remembered he's robin, thus the flashback of memories reminding him and bringing him back to his senses.
i think tae joo put dr. kang under some kind of hypnosis too, that's why he just let her go. just like how he did to that imposter who thought he was lee soo hyun. i think he makes dr. kang forget that he's the kidnapper and probably planted something in her memories so she wouldn't remember.

I've long given up on the romance aspect of this drama. there's just something lacking in that area imo. whether it with seo jin or robin, ha na didn't really gives away much abt her feelings, even when she says she likes robin. maybe it's part of her character, maybe han ji min fail to express that emotion, or maybe she and hyun bin lack the chemistry as on-screen couple.
but like girlfriday said, the last scene in this ep when she hugs robin, it's the only moment in the entire drama that i felt she truly likes robin after all. having said that, does it mean that there's no hope for ha na to fall for seo jin? we'll have to wait and see.
tbh, i like seo jin more than robin because i do like me a bad boy compared to sweet, kind boy like robin. but robin is really tugging at my heart more and more. while seo jin is so desperate to get rid of him because he wants to be normal, robin on the other end, wants to live, as himself, as robin, as a separate identity and separate person from seo jin. how heartbreaking that is since we have a 50-50 chance that robin will ceased to exist by the end of the drama, given that seo jin is the main character. unless the writer and pd decided to keep robin and kill seo jin instead, since making seo jin and robin co-existing forever is pretty impossible, not to say weird, especially to ha na, no matter who ha na chose. then again, nothing is impossible in kdrama land.
it breaks my heart to see how robin just wants to live, and yet everyone around him wants him to disappear.
i'm gonna cry a bucket when robin really ceases to exist. sob sob

It would be weird and unlikely for Seo-jin to disappear at the end. They are like two faces of the same coin so I hope that they'll become one, like Seo-jin says and have their memories, feelings and personalities merging. That way neither one would truly disappear.

Thanks GirlFriday for a fun recap.
Finally! Someone checks the whole bathroom before they do their little evil dance. That was so much fun to watch. I just love his character. Not much screen time but he makes the most of it. You, delusional cousin thinking you're a shrewd genius, you make me laugh.
I have to say I think Dr. TJ is stepping up his game if he was trying to get Terry to kill Dr. Kang. I'm not sure if the gas was there to help his escape or to actually knock Terry out before he killed Dr. Kang. He does seem to have a lot of time on his hands to be able to rig this all up. Did he get the Healer to get him a key to the place?
Robin. His fear was palpable. As much as I feel for him, he needs to grow up. I'm really afraid he is turning away from Seo Jin. His struggle is going to be hard to watch.
Seo Jin on the other hand seems to have made peace with himself concerning Robin. He is definitely more accepting about Robin, to the the point of worrying about his emotional state. I don't think it was just worry about Terry showing up either.
As for Terry, he came as a complete surprise to me. When he first got into Dr. Kang's face I could definitely feel the menace radiating off him.
Side thought - While Terry seems truly capable of murder and KMHM's Se Gi is bad boy we want to hug - who wants to see Terry in a get up like Se Gi's - guy liner included?

So I like Hana before cause I thought she had spunk and she stood up for what she believed in - helping the circus with the contact etc. but ep 12, even as she was trying to get more informaation about SJ's illness, she was expressionless and barely there. At least express something so we can feel her struggle and understand that she's been put into a difficult predicament and has not that many people to turn to.
Bring on Terry!! I want to see more.. evil eye HB is just as hwat as dimples HB. well now i can understand the excessive use of weapons when robin first appeared.
Fight fight fight SJ!! You can do it. I like his bold approach but I hope that he has kinda thought it through. LSH/TJ has shown that he really isn't a career criminal but that he is so messed up from the kidnapping that everything he does is now borderling on absurd. His desparation is unraveling too.

Despite its countless flaws in details, i manage to like the drama from the DID characters' conflict. Hyunbin such a good actor, that eventhou seojin-robin(-maybe terry) cld share the same cloth, i see them as completely different persons. Feels like one man show sometimes, when i really wish the writer was better in keeping the pace.
I'm soo in love with Seojin, but in this episode Robin touched my heart. (Eventhou it's a lil hard for me to take him seriously with the hair..). Now I understand that he is a 'somebody' too. But, still, it feels wrong..sorry Robin:(
12episodes now, and i got convinced that they dont really need a wonderland-circus as background. The story itself is enough, and it could happen (even better) with that unnecessary setting.

Thanks for the recap, GF!
Love how Secretary Kwon is so proud of Seojin for that video. Their relationship is the best!
Seojin being more mature is really appealing and I like his honesty that love should be accepting all parts of himself. So, Hana should be given a chance to consider whether she can love him.
Taejoo has some serious denial issues. I really hope he can be healed in the end after going through all these malicious motions.
Cousin Seungyeon is a hoot! Epic bathroom dance and thumbs up at his reflection. LOL
Seojin admitting his transformation and acknowledging his love for Hana is wonderful to see. I'm glad he's taking the time to focus himself on this identity battle. He can always pick up Wonderland and the whole corporation later on since the Chairman has no intention of giving Seungyeon the full reins.
Finally, they explained what happened five years ago. No wonder Robin is so hurt by that reaction from the girl. Terry! Didn't expect this violent alter ego though it is true that only have two personalities is not as common for those with DID. But it's good to see more conflict developing and also get to know more of the background story.
Thank goodness that Robin snapped back into reality in time before killing Dr. Kang. I really feel for him since he wants to desperately remain himself instead of disappearing; at the same time, he realistically knows that he cannot have his own identity in the real world. I wonder what Hana has in mind when she says that they'll live and how she plans to make this all work.

I'm watching Hyde, Jekyll, and Me mainly to see Han Ji Min and Hyun Bin together. I like Han Ji Min so much that the last few episodes were quite frustrating to watch. It seemed as if she lost something significant that took the life out of her face. Anyway, I hope she realizes this soon and do something about it. I loved her in Plan Man, Fatal Encounter, and several series she was in. I still like her in Hyde, Jekyll and Me, but I am certain she can do so much more. And the lack of depth to her character isn't helping. Only the last few minutes of this episode made me like Hana all over again.

I have exactly the same impression.
And, if it is GSJ at the end of the final scene, then it is quite interesting as Hana is immediately attracted - while she might be in love with Robin, the possibility of being in love with GSJ is also there. And, if he tells her who he is, she'll realize that her love is complicated.
There is the other upside - it means that GSJ might be willing to let go of his personality to be with her - to live in a way that he had not until now. Or perhaps he thinks there is a possibility to integrate all the aspects of his personality. Any of these directions is interesting from a storytelling perspective.

Okay - I think this show might have Dissociative Identity Disorder.
On the one hand, the writing of the romance / self-exploration arc has dramatically improved. GSJ and Robin have both been fleshed out into interesting characters with real dilemmas. JHN is still completely 2D, but there's really no need for her story to move along the plot - it's all about love and survival (or transformation) for GSJ and Robin.
The writing of some of the supporting characters has improved as well. Mom, the bodyguard and the brother have more or less been 86ed as completely unnecessary. The chaebol father has been given motivation and humanity - finally we understand his actions and regrets. And the secretary - we understand his role as less of a bumbling fool and more of a kind 'friend' in a difficult spot.
On the other hand, the bad guy arc has moved into completely ridiculous and largely unnecessary territory. It could literally be written out of the show and nothing would be lost. It's not necessary to the transformation of GSJ - this could have been accomplished 'accidentally' and then the focus on the conflict between romance, survival and transformation made to be the central point of the show (which is pretty much is anyway).
So much is wrong with the bad guy arc, that it is pretty hard to know where to start. The ridiculous, maybe?
Let's start with that secret little room. Was this prepared well in advance *in case* he needed to abduct someone? Apparently he was caught off guard when he was confronted by Dr. Kang with being Soo-hyun, reacted, and then had to come up with a quick solution. Thank goodness he already had a secret lair!!!
Then there's the whole peeing, eating thing.... I went there before. And the lab coat. The lab coat finally has a mark on it. (Continuity checker - what are you doing on set? Playing with your cell phone??!) The ridiculous thing is that the mark is bright red and looks like a lipstick stain. Does Dr. YTJ also have a split personality? Will it involve drag?? Blood stains are dark brown. And usually quite large when someone has been lying in a pool of blood. And certainly going to appear on the back of the jacket WHERE she was lying in a pool of blood.
Which brings me to the hair. Perfect coiffed. Matches the makeup. And yet - SHE WAS LYING IN A POOL OF BLOOD!!! Normally this results in blood being caked in the hair. Sigh!
Okay, moving on from the ridiculous, let's get to the sad. The writing here is just, well, stupid. Everything from the selfless psychologist to the 'museum exhibit videos and music' that is able to hypnotize makes me cringe. And Dr. YTJ - his character makes no sense: brilliant psychiatrist who is too stupid to understand his own past. #$%^... I lived near Harvard for years. NOBODY is that idiotic who studied there.
And my biggest sad is Sung Joon. What a pretty man. How...

I got cut off... continuing:
And my biggest sad is Sung Joon. What a pretty man. How attractive as a psychiatrist. How utterly unable to carry the role of a crazy person. This might go unnoticed in a drama where he is the only crazy person - but here Hyun-Bin is seriously out acting him in a very similar role. This doesn't bode well for Sung Joon's acting career. He's young though - if he continues to get cast, he may improve. Lots of actors grow from 'out of their depth' to amazing over time. Let's hope for the best.

Thanks soooo much for the recap, girlfriday. I agree that Detective Na should have asked Dr. Kang for her abductor's identity when he had the chance. There's a possibility that Tae-joo ran from the lighting booth, then to the ambulance, rendered the driver unconscious with chloroform while all the others were busy running to look for Dr. Kang, and finally ended up being the driver of the ambulance. Ugh. Hope not. Much as I love Sung joon's acting, I hope Dr. Kang's rescue finally ends the revenge arc. It's about time. Oh, and great song of the day!
My thoughts on this episode and series so far:
1) Secretary Kwon hit the spot where it hurts the most when he spoke the truth and questioned how Robin intended to protect Hana when he can't even provide his ID number. Aw... so sad but true, Secretary Kwon! That pretty much summed up my feelings for Robin as a (no-future-kind-of-boyfriend) during that scene in the police station in episode 7. BUT that's not to say I don't like Robin now. While I didn't particularly care for him when he was all smiles and saved people constantly, Robin's personality began to have colors from episode 8 onward. Episode 12 made Robin more interesting than ever with the sudden appearance of real "Hyde" in him.
2) I do understand what Seo-jin is trying to explain to Hana about him and Robin being the same person, and hence liking Robin is liking him as well. But I must say that I can relate more with Hana who says that they feel like totally different people. Even now that Seo-jin is changing and no longer grumpy, he is still so different from Robin. Even their proposals are different. The only thing they have in common is that both their proposals could have been more exciting because they came out almost anticlimactic, for want of a better word. I still can't believe this is how Seo-jin finally confesses to Hana *shakes head disappointedly* after the long wait.
3) For the first time ever, Cousin Seung-yeon made me laugh (albeit unintentionally I suppose) with that cone hair of his coupled with that crazy laugh in the bathroom. LOL.
4) The scene that moved me the most was Hana and Robin/Terry's conversation on the phone. Second most effective scene for me was their hug and everything Robin said. Third heartbreaking scene was Robin's reaction to what Secretary Kwon said over the phone.
5) It may seem twisted now to root for Robin even after this revelation of another side to him. But I can't help it. I suppose I now understand what Seo-jin told Hana in episode 11: that sympathy is the closest thing to love. The more Robin wins my sympathy, the more I like him. Despite my disappointment in Hana's lack of energy in the last couple of episodes, I'm so glad she remains faithful and supportive to Robin who is supposedly her boyfriend.

And i get Doctor Kang was really sick, but she also knew that Tae Joo was manipulating everyone. She also knew how dangerous Tae Joo is. She really should've just said who is behind everything. Sigh.

another good episode especially TERRY's appearance !!!!!!!!!!!
my thoughts are :
- TJ told Dr. Kang that he hypnotized Hana almost 12 times, that's why she's so emotionless or less energetic i guess in these latest episodes.
- I guess That everyone were not afraid of robin from the beginning, even SJ But in fact, it was TERRY because of what happened 5 years ago and because TERRY is connected with robin. So, if robin reappeared, TERRY IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER.
- SJ continues to impress me with his new attitude, leaving WONDERLAND, admitting his illness and addressing his past in public. SJ is just steps away from healing but the emergence of TERRY may take the show to a whole new level.

I am more curious about the memory Dr TJ might have been deleted previously..
Seo Jin said that there were two persons behind the kidnapping..
My theory would be the second person was YTJ's dad..
He might planned this as to threat Seo Jin's dad to give him all the money and power or to make him collapsed..
But in the end, he died in the car accident..
Though TJ seem denying the fact that he lost the memory, I am anticipating the time both SJ and TJ meet and talk about their past..

...starting to like Ha Na in this episode. HJM was so good in Cain and Abel. I was a bit frustrated for a couple of episodes in this drama....but my liking for her personality (in reallity) warned me not to stop waiting every episode. Han Ji Min, fighting!
...glad I felt goose bumps. hahaha...that shows maybe starting to feel Hyun Bin and Han Ji Min's chemistry.

I have to thank you GF for the recap. It's the first place I come too after I watch an episode. I was thinking how could no one from the police dept get in the ambulance with Dr Kang. It made me crazy! Will TJ beat them to the hospital and finish her off?
Can't wait for 13 and 14 episodes.

If I am Hana, I think I would have no problem in loving both Seojin and Robin, or another personality that may come out, because at the end they are the SAME person..
About how DID person cannot share the memories between personality, then that's when Hana should come out, she should be the bridge between them, helping them to share the memories, trying to reconcile the personalities together while loving them equally also..
while Hana here is doing nothing significant that help Seojin/Robin..
