Bae Doo-na returns to Korean film in The Romantic

As one of a small handful of successful crossover stars, it seems like Bae Doo-na (Jupiter Ascending) is pretty much in a new project every other day. With two more collaborations with the Wachowskis under her belt — the movie Jupiter Ascending and the Netflix TV series Sense8 — this year she has plans to return to Chungmuro, a year after her last domestic film, Do-hee. The new melodrama is called The Romantic, and is an omnibus movie about various men and women and their romantic entanglements.

The project will be helmed by director Jung Ha-rin (Eng-doo, Let’s Date), and also stars Ryu Hyun-kyung (Tasty Life, Whistleblower), who’s reuniting with the director after starring in Eng-doo, Let’s Date. Ryu Hyun-kyung is confirmed, while Bae Doo-na is in final contract negotiations to sign on.

There was an early story that Oh Jung-se (Plus Nine Boys) was being courted to play the leading man, but sadly he ended up declining the offer. BUT! You would be so cute with Bae Doo-na! I’ll just cry in my corner now. Oh Dal-soo (Detective K: The Laborer’s Daughter), meanwhile, has signed on as a supporting character.

There’s very little information on the story, other than it being about men and women and romance. Because that’s not vague or anything. Bae Doo-na’s character is a woman who’s bad at love, and that’s all we get for now. I’m upset about Oh Jung-se, so she’d better get a great co-star to make up for it.

The Romantic starts shooting in May for a release later this year.

She's such a talented actress, and has such a striking, otheworldly look.

I'm glad she's back in Korean films for now, because Jupiter Ascending is SO BAD, it's absolutely awful. Total mess. She deserves better than playing bit parts in crappy movies like this.

Well, for Asian actresses (both from Asia and Asian-America/Canadian) - pretty much still largely relegated to being the love interest/sexual conqeust for the white male lead.

But... Oh Jung-se!!!!! WHY?! I love Bae Doo-na and everything, but Oh Jung-se would have been great. I'll join you with the crying in the corner. We need him in a rom-com again asap.

Has anyone watched her last korean movie Do-hee (or A Girl At My Door)? I keep reading reviews where people are either raving about it or utterly disgusted like there is no in between and I am confused :/

Well, I guess it depends what you like.

It's a very good movie – more so than very good really. It's won awards, the reception from the critics has been pretty much all positive (if not all positive – I can't remember a single negative review). However, the subject matter is dark.

If people are "utterly disgusted" by it, I'd be due to the subject matter. This is a film that deals with several taboo topics, including homosexuality and child abuse and has characters that aren't exactly easy to like (that applies for the two leads but pretty much everyone in the whole town that they live in). It exposes some of the darkest parts of society, including in individuals that we like to pretend are innocent. Kim Sae-ron's character is a victim, but at the same time she's not a sweet, harmless child.

In other words, the film is a million shades of grey and throws up some rather difficult questions and holds up a mirror that viewers that they might not want to look into. I think that's exactly why it's an important and outstanding movie, but I'm sure there are some that would disagree with me.

Thank you, I think I understand better now the mixed reactions. Well, I'm pretty much an open person, I don't mind sensitive topics as long as it's dealt with with care and in a smart way. From your description, this sounds right up my alley. I guess I'll just take the dive and make an opinion for myself.

I watched Jupiter Ascending and it was a delight to see Bae Doo Na there. The movie sucks but Channing did a great job and Doo Na looks really cool in there.

Coincidentally, I just finished watching 'Air Doll' last night. If I hadn't first seen her in 'As One', 'Cloud Atlas', and 'Jupiter Ascending' I would have missed all the nuanced emotive in 'Air Doll'. Very sad movie under the surface. We've got 'A Girl at My Door' qued up next. Very good actress.
