Trials, tribulations, and tuxes for Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village
by javabeans
The newest installment of Three Meals a Day, the cooking-reality-suffering show produced by PD Na Young-seok, is premiering next week, which called for a press conference on the afternoon of January 9. This series is titled Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village, and inexplicably, Na PD’s three newest victims showed up wearing formal tuxes, which is hilariously random—surely done to mock the show’s very low-tech, high-suffering concept of sending stars to a remote island and making them feed themselves, right?
The original program was a surprise hit (well, not a surprise in that Na PD has the Midas touch, but a surprise in that it was so low-concept that its cast was insistent that it would flop), and while struggling to feed oneself was one of the premises, I don’t really think that was the focus. Shot on a farm and featuring a rotating roster of guests, the cast did have to cook, but had a lot of ingredients ready on hand, so the suffering was more of the grumbling-good-natured variety. This time is different, with Cha Seung-won, Yoo Hae-jin, and Jang Geun-seok having been shipped off to a remote fishing village on a tiny island, and from the sounds of it, the suffering is in full force.
Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village will be 10 episodes, and airs on tvN on Fridays beginning January 16.
Na PD: “After casting Cha Seung-won and Yoo Hae-jin, we needed a slave laborer. There was bound to be a lot of things needing to be done, and we got in touch with Jang Geun-seok. I told him we were making a high-class cooking program and asked if he wanted to do it, and he readily agreed.”
Jang Geun-seok: “I was definitely told it was a paradise with lots of things to eat. And there were things in abundance, but it’s that we couldn’t catch them. I felt like I’d been scammed.”
Cha Seung-won: “Compared to the original Three Meals a Day, we didn’t have a lot of things. There was only one market there but it didn’t have some items, so we had to fend for ourselves.”
Na PD: “The three of them worked like animals.”
Jang Geun-seok: “Since I was told it was a cooking program, I wanted to be impressive with my cooking, but all I did was peel garlic and carry pepper powder and do assistant work. In the end I just did what I was told.”
PD Shin Hyo-jung: “Once casting was complete, I was really shocked by them. It was like Cha Seung-won lived in the kitchen, and Yoo Hae-jin was a citizen of Manjaedo. Jang Geun-seok became ‘Manjaedo’s Prince.’ Female viewers may enjoy the broadcast, but they may also be disappointed—you’ll see a completely different side to the three of them.”
Jang Geun-seok: “My face bloats really easily, so I took milk with me. But when Na PD saw the milk, he just said ‘Are you kidding me?’ and confiscated it. It came as such a shock.”
Yoo Hae-jin: “When you see Cha Seung-won-sshi cooking on television, you’ll be shocked. It’s on a different level than the original show. Every meal was delicious, enough that viewers will be surprised.”
PD Shin Hyo-jung: “[Cha Seung-won] worked really hard, and because he’s particularly good at cooking, he was nicknamed Chajumma. He didn’t leave the kitchen.” (Can we pause to appreciate the simple beauty of CHAJUMMA?)
Cha Seung-won: “There were a lot of dishes that the producers requested. We didn’t even have the ingredients but they kept pushing us to make them, so from the cook’s perspective it was really annoying. Even so, I wanted to find a way to do it and win, and I’d end up taking out my annoyance out on Yoo Hae-jin.”
Yoo Hae-jin: “Cha Seung-won cooks really well. But if things don’t go the way he intends, he’s the type to harass other people. You know how you fry seaweed when you make seaweed soup? I felt like his seaweed being fried. While filming, sometimes I’d be annoyed at him but then as soon as it was time to eat, those feelings would go away.”
Jang Geun-seok, on the trials of being the maknae: “It was hardest whenever my name was called. Whenever the hyungs would call out, ‘Geun-seok-ah,’ hardship would follow. I became newly aware that my name was Jang Geun-seok while we were there.”
Cha Seung-won: “Because Geun-seokie was there, we were able to eat tasty food. He said he felt afraid whenever someone called his name, but he would do any errand whether it was fetching vegetables or other ingredients, and sometimes he’d have them prepared in advance. So he got the title ‘Jang Chef.'”
Cha Seung-won: “Every single day was difficult. On location, Na Young-seok PD was especially irritating. Even though I’d never fished before and the weather was bad and there were a lot of struggles, he just kept demanding things.”

I'm not sure if "Jang Chef" was meant to be sarcastic... but it's well known among Jang Keun Suk's Eels (fans)... that he really loves to cook. I've seen videos of him cooking for his staff a couple of times on YouTube. But on top of that, he put out a cookbook in Japan in June 2012.
I have always enjoyed watching Cha Seung Won as well.So I look forward to seeing those 2 interact, especially since Jang Keun Suk is closer to the age of Cha Seung Won's son, Noah. http://www.soompi.com/2012/06/08/jang-geun-suk-to-release-cookbook-on-june-10/

Like Korea doesn't get enough footage of their good looking celebrities eating. Every drama, every variety show has someone slurping up their disgusting idea of food. I'm sorry for sounding insensitive but some cultures have yucky food. It's not their fault. It's really not even their fault that they are obsessed with food but also starve themselves at the same time. I understand it's only been a matter of decades since they ate everything from kudzu to acorns but they don't have to anymore. Some Korean food is tasty but there is very little skill involved with boiling everything, frying the rest, eating everything else raw or rotten. Not on my agenda to watch these guys eat things that I would only consider eating if participating in an episode of Survivor.

I respect that you have different taste of food food but please don't call another culture's food " yucky". The food might not appeal to your reference of visual perception or presentation but it's still someone elses' food. You don't need to eat it at all.
By the way, each meal requires a lot of time and heart while preparing it- even if it's raw. Also, the proper term is " aged" or " fermented" and NOT " rotten". Many cultures do that ... you do know about yogurt and cheese, right???
Food is very precious to everyone- whether to survive or delishly enjoy.... please do not make fun/ insensitive remarks. Thank you....& Let's Eat( which btw is a great drama/ food porn..... YUMMMMM)

Sorry not politically correct at all...did you know that Korea does not have one single Michelin starred restaurant....besides people have been teasing the British for years about their horrible food....they don't get all PC and butthurt over it...You go ahead and watch but I'm not up for watching Koreans eat anything else. I get enough of that from watching dramas. It would make me happy if they remove a bit of their food porn from dramas and added a few more scenes of people doing other things instead. BTW I'm from the American south and we have some fairly disgusting food traditions here as well. Peasant food is often pretty disgusting because it involves eating animal parts and other things that people wouldn't normally eat. Chitterlings come to mind very quickly...oh yeah....Koreans eat them too don't they.

Wow, just wow. What makes it disgusting to you? Because it's ...peasant food? Or because you can't stand the taste? If you don't grow up with certain food it's understandable to find them hard to swallow and taste is of course personal. And Michelin guide publishes their ratings for a select few cities. Even in the US, LA where there are a lot of amazing restaurants (who else would feed the celebs? ) is not included in the Michelin guide. Being in guide is an indication of quality, but not being in it is not an indication of a lack of quality. Before citing something as evidence to support your argument please at least try to be knowledgeable.

Thanks nn for that reply. TJ, talk about the reality, korean food is super delicious, with amazing layers of flavors and spice, so that even the most basic food has a complexity that rivals peruvian cuisine. Might not be your palate, but boy, my family and I love love love it!

A Michelin star matter that much to someone's food culture? I doubt everyday people know or care about Michelin star. Which is to me just a concept in business for some monetary gain and nothing of value to a country's culture. 7 billion people in the world, million of restaurants, thousands of food culture, can they go and have a taste of all those restaurants? And what do they know about the true taste of someone's culture? Who are the judges for how classy or taste of some thousand year old culture's food? So if they don't get a Michelin star, their food is 'yucky' and I shouldn't eat it until they get a michelin star?
Just because Britain don't care for being poke fun at doesn't mean that SK should be the same.

Errm seriously, these variety shows are made for people who find the food delicious and/or find the process of making it fun and enjoyable. If it looks 'yucky' to you, then no one's forcing you to watch it. Also, people who are 'obsessed with food' isn't necessarily those who 'starve themselves'. That's such a huge generalization without actual context.
Your comment is surely insensitive - as you clearly pointed out yourself. Korean variety is mostly made for Korean audiences. And a majority of them find it entertaining and fun. There's tons of different types of TV flowing around if you don't find this to your liking. Calling it disgusting just reflects a bit of character here.

Yeah I know it's insensitive and I don't care. The British have taken the teasing for years about their food being gross why can't the Koreans? Not everyone can be from France or Italy. The thing is Korea is promoting it's food abroad. The Korean government takes out big billboards in NYC to promote Bibimbap...do you know what bibimbap is...steamed rice, steamed vegetables and hot sauce...is that what you consider cuisine? You are right I have no plans to watch unless Cha Seung won is cooking naked.

Lol you must not know what gochujang is to call it hot sauce (gross underestimation). Also I'd like to see you steam vegetables :) the best food is the most simple. I can also say Italian food is just tomato sauce (tomato, garlic, salt, super simple) on pasta, but does that make bad? Apparently not, according to your "France and Italy" standard....

You're unbelievably insensitive. Please look up why Asians find it acceptable to slurp their food. Of why burping is acceptable in some cultures.
Why watch Korean dramas or shows if you have such a low view of their culture and belief?
And you obviously don't cook any Korean food if you generalized it to just boiling and frying etc.
Gosh, I eat raw, fermented and preserved food myself. Just because some foods are not acceptable to your taste doesn't mean it's yucky. You must not have a really adventurous palate.

I'm from the American south and I've eaten plenty of disgusting stuff. The Koreans eat a lot like we used to eat. I grew up watching my grandmother eat pig's feet (Koreans call them trotters what a cute name for such a disgusting body part.) chitterlings, brains, eel, squirrel, venison, whatever. Being from Virginia there isn't anything on the pig or chicken that I haven't encountered on the table. That doesn't mean that we still eat that way. You can't even find fresh chitterlings in the grocery stores anymore like when I was growing up. Because people don't need to eat offal anymore to survive. I haven't even seen a carton of chicken livers in the grocery store in ages. Just because a food is traditional doesn't make it good. Just because people had to eat that stuff to survive at one time doesn't mean they need to continue eating it and pretend it's good.

You're not only insensitive but also pathetically ignorant. Pig's trotters are enjoyed by not only Koreans but Chinese. Consuming offal reduces food wastage as the animal is not killed for just the meat.
Also, these animal body parts that westerners eschew and that you find disgusting are actually a good source of nutrients. Chicken feet for example is actually a source of collagen.
Also please take a good look at your own country's diet to explain why the obesity rate is so high in the US.

Nothing goes into people's mouth is disgusting, but what comes out of it. Koreans eat rotten food? You know what's rotten? Those things that come out of your anus. No matter how many Michelin stars the restaurant you ate from has, it all melts down to the same thing, and doesn't smell any better. In your case, it applies to your thoughts as well.....stinky and disgusting.

Lol. That'one of the funniest reply I've read in ages.
True true. I was just reading about the Michelin star comment. And good gojuchang is not hot sauce. For goodness sakes. Even American Koreans have American made red pepper paste. I love that taste and even Korean chilli powder have different grades.
Talking about Michelin stars. The British make fun of their food. However the comments here were not good natured jokes about Korean food. It was out and out disgust and criticisms. There was no and is not good intentions there.
Either way, her loss and we don't care about her taste anyway. If that is how she judges food. And yes I too am used to fine dining; however good bibimbap is a really satisfying meal. No complaints about it at all.

How terrible of you to speak like that. These kinds of thoughts you really should keep to yourself. Where I live we eat liver, kidney, pig trotters, chicken feet and its all very delicious and highly nutritious. Please do not look down on any culture because of food.

What makes it good then? You seem very obsessed with ideas of food 'status' and class. Foie gras is duck liver fyi, but I doubt you'd claim we're all pretending it's good.

Im amazed at the depths of your ignorance, not to mention insensitivity.
Have you even been to France or Italy? You should know that some Michelins restaurants in France actually serve the "disgusting" pig's feet that you talked about, and it's even pricier than steaks or burgers. And how about escargots? It's one of France's national dishes. In fact, people in France eat frog legs, intestines (especially in Lyon) and all kinds of innards as well, and it's considered a delicacy.
You are obviously limited in your knowledge of the world, and I don't even know why you feel proud of displaying your stupidity here. Just because you are culturally narrow-minded, myopic and have ill manners, doesn't give you a right to trash other nations' food culture like that on a public platform. You are being a disgrace to America.

I'm not korean but I find your sentiments very rude. Do not mistake rudeness with insensitivity. Perhaps your palette is only suited to eat junk doused with artificial tastes.

It will take sometime for him to do dramas as masters degree in film directing at hanyang uni is his priority at the moment.
Eels are thankful that he agreed to this show.

Really? :(((
This makes me sad. I was hoping a Na PD variety means he decided to be more active in SK again.
I just want him in another cracktastic show like You're Beautiful.... I've tried Marry Me Mary and Love Rain, but the writing made me drop them despite liking the actors very much.

Hehee, what a fun read.
Hopefully this show will be subbed somewhere. It sounds like it'll be fun. I like watching variety shows when people have to cook and struggle to prep the food on their own. It's a nice feeling when they all come together and enjoy their meals in the end. I still remember watching CSW on Family Outing when he was catching fish. ^^
And "Chajumma" = LOVE THAT NAME. XD

Chajumma was a total hoot when he engaged Hyori in a cook-off on FO when they were stuck cooking dinner for the family (Kookie was their "errand boy").

Dear @ Javabeans,
I have chosen not to reply to the insensitive remark since I believe it would fall to deaf ears...
I want to thank you for your article and apologize for inciting any nuances.

Does anyone know who is the eldest or debuted first? I'm curious but I know that seniority is usually dispensed with quickly on reality variety shows.

Perfect show to watch while waiting for original Three Meals a day winter season, as long as Taecyeon in it --fansub will hopefully follows.
I'll read the recap and watch it raw in case nobody sub this :D

there are rumors of JKS being chucked out from the program due to old issues with financial evasion of a jks related company (already solved - he paid the fee)
this would really be bad, the show will miss some good humor!
