Song Jae-rim romances an unkind woman
by javabeans
girlfriday: So… you know that drama that Song Jae-rim was considering? He’s doing it now.
javabeans: Oh. Unkind Women, you mean? About three generations of… unkind women?
girlfriday: Yes. See how the title speaks for itself?
javabeans: So he’s going to romance Lee Hana (High School King of Savvy)… who I like… I guess… and I also don’t have any problems with dramas about less-than-conventionally-pleasing heroines… but also KBS is telling us nothing other than that three generations of unkind women will be played by Kim Hye-ja (Mother), Chae Shi-ra (Iron Empress), and Lee Hana. So… not much to get excited about.
girlfriday: Yeah it’s more like a family weekend drama plot, but it’s airing on Wednesday-Thursday for some odd reason.
javabeans: Well, if the drama doesn’t give me a reason to get excited, I’ll have to create my own reasons. By which I mean posting Song Jae-rim’s abs. Remember when he looked like this?
girlfriday: I DO remember that. That’s pretty much the main thing I remember about him — I thought he looked like a really pretty, really airheaded surfer dude.
javabeans: Korea’s answer to Keanu Reeves, you mean.
girlfriday: Is that a question that needed an answer?
javabeans: Probably not, but hey, extra photos never hurt anybody. I do feel like it’s worth pointing out that Song Jae-rim seems too good for a lot of the stuff he acts in… but that’s his decision, so also, maybe it’s his cross to bear.
girlfriday: At least this time he’ll play the hero and get the girl, and stop being the OTP-killer that he is in every other drama.
javabeans: This is the assumption. But let’s not assume anything with Song Jae-rim, because knowing him, he’ll find a way to crush our hopes and end up single and sad anyway. I still can’t believe I sat through Nail Shop Paris, 95% because of him. And 95% of 10 hours is 9.5 hours, which is how much time he now owes me.
girlfriday: I’m sure he can do a lot in 9.5 hours.
javabeans: Here’s a retrospective, to spur your imaginations. Not that your imaginations needed spurring.
girlfriday: Mary, I think this is your cue.

Try Nail Shop Paris or Inspiring Generation to see him in "prominent" roles.
He's okay. (And as JB said, he's really special in NSP.)
In Surplus Princess, he's also good in latter part when his role required cuteness and sweetness and swooniness. Though that was my least-liked role for him. (Surprise?) Mainly because he was more an object of affection. Something to be grabbed and kissed by the Mermaid, rather than an active character like in NSP and IG/AOF.
Hmm... I can't speak for TMETS since I haven't seen it. But for his drama after that, he's definitely not the kind of actor that will make you "not watch a drama". And hey, even taking Rimmie out, aren't you interested in the story of 3 generations of Unkind Women? The premise itself seems good.

wow, i didnt even link him to nail shop paris until javabeans mentioned that!! lol. for some reason i didnt recognize him and i endured through 6-7episodes of that drama. lol. i couldnt continue on afterwards. ugh.
just recently watched surplus princess with him in it and its surprisingly very funny!! not sure why it had low ratings, very comedic…lots of references to kdramas, etc.
wished tvn allowed them to complete the original 16 eps instead of making it only a 10ep drama. it made the ending to rushed :(

Okay, New Year's Resolution: find Nail Shop Paris and watch it!
Congrats to mary on her debut in the official DB recaps! And congrats to her SJR on his official Leading Man status!
Amazing how many different styles/hairstyles he can carry off.
I wonder if he ad libs a lot when acting? I'd love it if he made his super-cheesy remarks in the show!

Delurking for the first time ever to comment because of my ongoing fascination with SJR (especially after watching Surplus Princess -- I totally fell for him there and I couldn't bear to watch the last episode because my ship burned and sank down the depths of second lead syndrome).
Anyway, this news made me unbearably happy! Knowing he's finally the male lead and WILL finally get the girl -- I'm like, hooraaay for Apple Butt Oppa! I'm really looking forward to SJR's works as I can't even touch Nail Shop Paris without wanting to barf over the storyline.
And hi to Mary! Your fangirling over SJR actually fueled my fascination for him (his underwater kiss scene and shameless fan service in SP didn't hurt too).
