Pinocchio: Episode 17

The tension has admittedly gone down in recent weeks (Hyung’s arc kind of topped us out as far as suspense goes), but today’s episode actually brings back some of the stronger heroine-centric elements that we’d seen before, like when In-ha dared to publicly confront her mother about the kind of reporter she really was. Today’s story is all about our heroine and the lengths she’ll go to for truth, and honor, and love, and it’s pretty damn compelling. Goodness knows I love me some Dal-po, but I like it more when In-ha gets to shine.

EPISODE 17: “The Scarlet Letter”

In the wake of discovering the truth about their mothers’ involvement in both media cover-ups of the fires, In-ha and Beom-jo each race off to confront them right away. In-ha storms into the conference room at MSC to confront Mom with a printout of the data she recovered from the old cell phone.

Mom looks nervous to have been caught, and In-ha shouts that she gave her the benefit of the doubt—she at least believed that Mom was misinformed and misguided thirteen years ago. But now it’s clear that she’s just someone who says and does whatever her boss orders of her. Pained and incredulous, she asks, “Are you really a reporter?”

The reception is even icier over at Beom-jo’s confrontation with Chaebol Mommy, who simply flips through the call log like it’s an order sheet for more purses. He pleads for an explanation: “Tell me you’re not someone this scary… that you’re not someone this horrifying, please!”

But she just asks placidly who else knows about this call log. Yikes, do you not hear the desperation in his voice as he asks you to come up with a plausible excuse, Mommy? But she just repeats her earlier statement that the day he quits his job as a reporter, she’ll start answering his questions. So Beom-jo calls Princess to declare that he’s quitting as of now, and slams his phone on the table: “Satisfied? I think I qualify for those answers now.”

Now that she got what she wanted from Beom-jo, Chaebol Mommy admits to everything—the fire thirteen years ago was the same as the recent one, where she was helping an assemblyman cover his tracks. The plan was just to pull some focus on Firefighter Dad until the elections passed, but she didn’t know that incident would get out of hand.

But truly horrifying is her sincere question, asking what was so wrong about what she did. She says none of it is illegal, and she was merely helping out a friend. She describes her work like that of a gardener, planting seeds and toiling away for years just to see the fruits of her labor, and calls this sort of political favor a necessary part of caring for her crop.

Beom-jo is amazed to see that she isn’t even the least bit concerned about the consequences of any of this—she figures that Firefighter Dad’s incident is long past its statute of limitations, and the most that’ll happen if this gets out is that she’ll suffer a ding to her reputation. He asks what his mother gained from doing these sorts of favors for all these years, and she answers bluntly, “Everything you have enjoyed in life up until now, and everything you will enjoy in the future.”

Back at MSC, In-ha refuses to lower her voice and shouts she’s going to reveal the truth to the whole world. Mom flashes back to the moment when she said the exact same thing to her boss following Firefighter Dad’s story. Innnnnnteresting.

The MSC director asks if she really thinks he’ll let her get away with that, and she says defiantly that the story will air on YGN instead. He asks what kind of future she expects to have as a whistleblower, reminding her that she’d never be able to work as a reporter again.

And in the present, In-ha says exactly the same thing, about taking the story to YGN instead. And Mom makes the exact threats she’d heard, about this being the end of her career as a reporter. She even admits to having the same dilemma.

We return to the flashback, where the director offers to strengthen Mom’s voice instead, by making her the first female Cap at MSC. In the present, she admits that her choice brought her this far. She counters that In-ha could make a different choice, and have a clear conscience while working at the convenience store.

She dangles the end of In-ha’s intern term in front of her and asks if she doesn’t want a permanent job: “Think about it—whether you can say what they want just once, and in exchange become a reporter with the strength to say ninety-nine things with the right voice. Or… if you’re going to become a powerless person who has no voice.” Ugh, she has the devil’s sales skills, I swear.

She adds the kicker, complete with watery eyes and quivering lip: “I don’t want you to become someone powerless like that. I’m not saying this as your boss… but as your mother.”

Mom says that she knows only too well what happens to a whistleblower in real life, and tells In-ha the truth about Dad: He was once a successful banker, but when he discovered his bank’s shady accounting practices, he leaked the information to the press and lost his job. Mom: “Whose life do you think is more pathetic now?” Omg, did you just insult Best Dad Ever? Hold me back! Hold me back!

In-ha stands up and says defiantly that she’s never once thought of Dad’s life as pathetic, and that if his life is the price for saying and doing the right thing, then she’s in fact proud of him. Atta girl! She says she won’t be making the same choice that Mom did, and grabs the evidence and storms out.

Dad cleans at home and gets riled up all over again when he thinks about Dal-po moving on already with a new girl. He decides he can’t let it rest, and calls Dal-po to his office for a good talking-to, and lectures him about how quickly he forgot In-ha and got a new girlfriend.

That’s news to Dal-po, but Dad says he found a long strand of hair in Dal-po’s apartment the other night and knows what’s going on. “Or are you going to try and insist that it belongs to a long-haired boyfriend?” Okay, so maybe he said “boy friend,” potayto, potahto.

Dal-po has no choice but to explain, so he tells Dad the truth—that it’s In-ha’s because she was over at his place that night. Dad is suddenly all smiles and relieved to hear that Dal-po’s feelings haven’t changed… and then it suddenly sinks in that this means he had In-ha over in his apartment. Alone.

Cut to: Dad anger-brushing his teeth at home, getting more and more worked up by the minute. In-ha happens to run home just in time for an interrogation, and he launches into a full-blown lecture with a mouthful of toothpaste, about how he knows that she’s been going in and out of a boy’s room and how Dal-po might have grown up as her uncle but he’s still a man.

But all In-ha can see is Dad’s current state, in his head-to-toe tracksuit ensemble and the toothpaste he’s spraying everywhere, her declaration of how proud she was of him ringing in her ears. Ha, it’s the exact reverse of Dad’s moment of shame right after he’d told Dal-po how beautiful and precious his perfect daughter was. Like father, like daughter.

He finally slows down long enough to ask what she came home to ask him, but she decides she doesn’t want to anymore and trudges back to the door. Dad chokes on his toothpaste, and In-ha shakes her head with a sigh, heh.

She goes back to MSC and shares the call log with Princess and Il-joo, without naming the people involved. They’re up in arms about it, thinking it must be someone over at rival network NTS, and take turns declaring that they’ll be the one to report this to the world. That is, until In-ha tells them that this is about their station, and the people implicated in the cover-up are Mom and their director.

Suddenly they’re backpedaling and sheepishly naming all of the family obligations they have to uphold—there’s no way they’d manage to report this at MSC, and leaking the information elsewhere would mean the end of a career in journalism.

They’re both ashamed and can barely look In-ha in the eye, but they admit that this isn’t something they can do. They ask if she really could do it, and she says that she can… but hiccups.

Poor Beom-jo is so traumatized that he just stands fully clothed in his shower, bawling his eyes out at the realization that his entire life of comfort was bought at such a heavy price.

Mom sits in the dark thinking back to the moment she had met with YGN’s Gyo-dong and Editor Jo, intending to go through with it anyway and hand over the evidence. But she chickened out at the last minute, and said nothing.

In-ha hiccups the whole way over to YGN’s building, trying to convince herself that she can go through with this because it needs to be done. It isn’t working though and no amount of “This is the right thing to do” will stop her hiccups… until Dal-po comes down to meet her. Her hiccups stop at the sight of him.

He wonders what she’s smiling about, and she says she’s amazed that her dilemma was solved the second she saw him. She leans in to hug him and calls it a dilemma she’s sorry to even call a dilemma. I just love how much she’s loving this hug.

His YGN bosses walk by with teasing smiles, and In-ha just hugs him more, not caring at all. It’s just so cute. He reminds her that he works here and wonders what’s gotten into her, and she says she has something to say.

She says she has an exclusive for him, because she can’t report it, but he can. She slides over the envelope with Mom’s old cell phone and the log, and lets him read the texts between her and Beom-jo’s mother for himself.

Dal-po’s hands shake as he reads the orders that led so directly to the destruction of his family. A tear falls as he wonders in disbelief how a few lines of text turned his father into a criminal. He’s so worked up with rage that he slams his water glass on the table and breaks it right in his hand. It startles In-ha and she rushes over, but he doesn’t even register the blood on his hand.

Once she’s done bandaging up his hand, he’s calmed down and asks if Beom-jo knows and if she’s okay. She says it’d be a lie if she said she were fine. But this story will never make it on the air at MSC, which is why she’s giving it to Dal-po, and asks him to report it.

He says he will, no matter what it takes, and thanks her for giving him the story. I don’t think he understands quite yet what she’s giving up to do this, but she tamps down her tears and just nods resolutely.

The next day In-ha packs up her things at the precinct, while Dal-po takes the evidence to show Hyung, who breaks down in tears to read the messages.

In-ha runs into Beom-jo on her way out, but he’s suddenly very cold to her. He warns her that no matter what she and Dal-po do, his mother won’t suffer much, so it’s better that they just protect their positions instead of fighting uselessly. He plans to return to his rightful place too, and leaves her standing there slackjawed.

Dal-po turns the evidence over to Gyo-dong, who fumes as he reads the text messages. He takes a moment to gulp down Yoo-rae’s soda and calm down, and then assigns Dal-po to do nothing but work on this story night and day, pulling more team members to help out.

In-ha goes to MSC with her suitcase in tow, and Il-joo bounds up with congratulations—she’s been made an official full-time employee! Oof, what timing. But In-ha stands her ground and hands over her resignation letter instead, and walks out with her head held high.

Mom panics that her tactics haven’t worked, and chases In-ha down to ask what the hell she’s doing. In-ha shocks her by saying that she already handed everything over to YGN so that she wouldn’t falter in her decision today, adding bitterly that it made her so happy to be made a permanent employee.

Mom asks in desperation why she’s going to these lengths, and In-ha shouts back that she believes this is the right thing to do. “And I’m apologizing in your place! This is what you should have done! But because you didn’t, I’m the one doing it now!” Mom asks why In-ha is apologizing in her place, and In-ha’s answer throws her completely: “Because I’m your daughter.”

In-ha gets choked up with tears as she admits that she tried a thousand times to tell herself that they were strangers, that Mom had abandoned her so she should too. “But I can’t! All I have to do is let go of this hand, but I can’t… like an idiot.” She walks away in tears, leaving Mom completely stunned.

Dal-po heads out to get his first interview with Beom-jo’s mother for the story, and dons spyglasses for the task. He just misses In-ha’s exit from MSC, and she cheers him to do a good job.

She goes home and Dad wonders what she’s doing here in the middle of the day, and she does her best to smile cheerily as she says that she quit her job today, reminding him that he always hated her being a reporter.

Dad runs over in alarm and asks if she got fired, but she says it’s the other way around—she fired her company because she wanted to be a straight shooter, just like Dad.

The tears start to well up as she grabs the sides of his apron and looks up at him: “Did you regret it? You didn’t right? Tell me that you didn’t regret it. Tell me that I did a good job. Quick! Tell me I did a good job!”

She bursts into tears and sobs on his shoulder, and because Dad is Dad, he does exactly what she needs, declaring loudly, “You did a good job! My daughter did a good job!”

Meanwhile, Dal-po waits to ambush Chaebol Mommy with a camera, and finds Beom-jo standing right by her side. She agrees to the interview pretending to be nice just because he’s Beom-jo’s friend, and plays dumb when he asks about the text messages.

She insists that she doesn’t know what he’s talking about because it was sooo long ago, but Dal-po points out that he never said it happened a long time ago. As soon as she gets flustered, the interview gets shut down and they ride off. Chaebol Mommy immediately asks Song Cha-ok to meet.

In-ha is too depressed to eat, but answers all of Dal-po’s updates with encouragement, not letting on how hard this is for her. She grouses at her own growling stomach for not even letting her wallow in peace, and trudges out sheepishly to join Dad and Grandpa for dinner.

She takes the chatty approach and says she’s going to get her driver’s license and look into civil service exams because she’s still young and has lots of options, and aegyos Grandpa into paying for an English tutoring academy.

Grandpa agrees happily, and tells her that she did the right thing, so she shouldn’t be ashamed. She rests her head on Grandpa’s shoulder as he tells her that she did a good job, and she finally lets herself relax and looks up at Dad and Grandpa gratefully.

In the coming days, Dal-po runs around collecting interviews, and In-ha’s old classmate teaches her how to drive in between her English classes. Princess is still sighing over In-ha’s resignation letter, in which she states as her reason for quitting: “Because I couldn’t say what I wanted to say.”

Gyo-dong notices the letter and Princess tells him all about In-ha’s whistleblowing dilemma, and admits that he couldn’t bring himself to process her resignation yet. Gyo-dong goes straight to his team and tells them to put the story on hold, and takes Dal-po aside to ask if he really made sure that In-ha was okay.

He explains that her handing over this story to them amounts to whistleblowing, which would put her job, her career, and her entire future on the line. Basically, it’s not something you do unless you’re risking everything, and he warns Dal-po not to take it lightly.

Dal-po looks alarmed, and says he didn’t know. But now In-ha’s hug the other night takes on a whole new meaning, and Gyo-dong confirms that she handed in her resignation knowing this would cost her her job. He tells Dal-po that he knows this story is important to him, but reminds him not to lose sight of what he needs to ask as a reporter, just to satisfy his revenge.

As Dal-po runs off after In-ha, Yoo-rae mutters at all her hard work going unappreciated and unnoticed by Gyo-dong, who cut her off mid-presentation. Gyo-dong just casually leaves a drink next to her, and when she notices it, she beams and wonders if this is a sign that he likes her, since he remembered the exact drink he stole from her the other day. (Ha, she even wonders if he stole her drink in the first place to get a secondhand kiss.)

Her coworker scoffs that he got one too and bursts her bubble, and she chides herself for jumping to conclusions again when she was so wrong about Dal-po. But Gyo-dong’s shy glances in her direction are making me think otherwise. Please be true. It would be so adorable.

Dal-po steamrolls into Chan-soo’s station and shouts at In-ha to come outside, and asks how she couldn’t forget to mention the part about her quitting her job over all this. She says it’s because she knew he’d get this mad, and says she’s doing fine and keeping busy. But he tells her that her resignation hasn’t been processed, and tells her to go back to MSC.

She refuses, but he says he won’t report the story. She grows wide-eyed and asks how he could do that—doesn’t he know what she went through to give him that evidence? But he says he didn’t know, and if he had, he never would’ve accepted it. She calls him crazy, but he takes her hand and asks, “If you were me, would you accept it? If it would ruin my life? Could you do that?!”

He tells her he’ll act according to how she answers, and she steels herself to say that she would… but hiccups, of course. He points out that she’s asking him to do something she can’t, and assures her that he won’t just bury the story—he’ll just find another way to prove the connection.

He promises that they’ll find another road, together. She cries that it’s such a waste, and buries her head in his chest as she cries.

Over udon, In-ha tells Dal-po about Mom almost turning everything over to YGN the first time, and what she gained from Beom-jo’s mother in exchange for her silence. She says she didn’t want to make that same choice, and admits that she was scared too, of turning out like Dad.

She tells him about Dad’s story, where doing the right thing cost him his career, eventually leading to their divorce. Dal-po wonders if the two of them regret their choices at all—Mom for taking the low road and Dad for taking the high road.

Mom goes to meet Chaebol Mommy at an art gallery, where Beom-jo is dutifully by his mother’s side. We keep getting close-ups of his phone though, which is making me think that he hasn’t quite gone over to the dark side like he’s letting on.

Here, Mommy talks more freely about all the things she does to keep her politicians happy, and mentions the current thorn in her side—Dal-po. He isn’t someone she can entice with money or power, but she does know about his relationship with In-ha… and asks Mom to bring her daughter over for a meeting. Gulp. Both Mom and Beom-jo look alarmed, but Chaebol Mommy insists that she’s not going to harm her—she’s simply going to offer In-ha a chance to be successful just like her mother.

In-ha asks Dad if he regrets his choice to be a whistleblower and he says no. But when she asks if he’d do the same thing all over again, he says no. Dad says he doesn’t regret reporting the truth, but he does regret quitting so quickly, because he should’ve endured and stuck it out, no matter how difficult the scrutiny was.

That gives In-ha the push she needs to pack up her stuff and head back to work, and Dal-po greets her outside by kissing his hand and stamping her forehead, and she does the same to him.

He starts to head inside with her and she reminds him that his building is the other one. But he’s got business at MSC today, and he waits in the lobby until Mom arrives. In a twist, he hands her the evidence that In-ha gave him.

She’s confused—isn’t this the information he’s desperately been searching for? Dal-po says yes, it’s exactly the thing that’ll prove those responsible for the destruction of his family. In fact revealing that to the world is his life’s wish, but he also isn’t about to ruin someone’s life to do it.

She asks if he’s going to give up then, but he says no, he wants her to report it instead. Whoa. He says that In-ha doesn’t have the power to report it, and if he does, In-ha gets hurt. But Mom is the person responsible for the tragedy, not In-ha, so he thinks it falls on her shoulders to report the story.

She points out how naïve it is for him to think she’d do that, and he agrees: “I know what an enormous gamble this is, but I want to believe naively that there was a time that you wanted to reveal the truth, that you were once a reporter, and that you just might regret the choice you made fourteen years ago.”

She calls him and In-ha reckless and walks away, but all the things they’ve said to her over the past year come flooding back, most pointedly In-ha’s declaration that she’s apologizing in her mother’s place, and that she stupidly can’t seem to abandon Mom the way Mom abandoned her.

She mutters aloud, “It’s so annoying that you make me concerned. It’s so annoying that you’re making me embarrassed…” Her back is to Dal-po, but when the camera comes around, tears are streaming down her face.

COMMENTS

Nicely played. I wasn’t prepared to give Mom a chance at redemption, but this is a twist I like very much, and everything we went through over the course of the episode to get here was really emotionally satisfying to boot. We get a great parallel between In-ha and Mom and the choices they make at the exact same crossroads, and I just love the satisfaction of watching In-ha take the high road. It’s such a slam to Mom’s ego, when she’s so sure she made the right choice all those years ago. But In-ha not only defends Dad (*sniffle*), but shows that she has the guts to do what Mom couldn’t, and shames all her bosses at MSC by asking what the point is of a reporter that isn’t allowed to speak.

The best part is the support she gets from her family for doing the right thing, no questions asked. Her scene with Dad after quitting her job just got me right in the heart, and it made the whole trial worth it even though she ended up going back to work. This is a case where In-ha and Dal-po each make noble sacrifices for the other but in the best possible way—she’s willing to give up her job to do what she believes is right, and he’s willing to give up an easy path towards revenge for In-ha.

I love what they give up for each other, but even more that they stop each other from being stupid in those sacrifices. There’s a wide healthy middle ground between sacrificing everything for the one you love and being selfish, and the way they navigated that middle ground with equal sacrifice was just right, and no less romantic for being practical. Despite her positive outlook on life, it would’ve saddened me too much if In-ha had to give up her dream job—it was her dream that got both of them on this path, after all.

With three episodes left, there should be plenty of time for side romances (Cap, you’re not going to stop at just sneaking Yoo-rae beverages, are you?), more of the kind of family bonding we got today, and a good wrap-up for Beom-jo. There has to be more to his resigned attitude, and something tells me he’ll be the one with enough power to actually do something about his mother. After all, what’s the point in taking down two bosses at MSC if Chaebol Mommy’s just going to put new reporters in her pocket and keep on truckin’?

I’m starting to have some faith that Mom can actually earn her redemption after all, especially now that we’ve learned that she was once just like In-ha and wanted to do the right thing. She’s still guilty as hell but there’s a vast difference between her and Beom-jo’s Chaebol Mommy, who thinks she has the right to wield her money and power this way without consequence. Mom, on the other hand, knows exactly when and how it all started to go wrong, and contrary to what we’ve seen before, she might actually have grown a conscience (or just remembered where she put it fourteen years ago).

If Dal-po and In-ha have managed to use their idealism to reignite Mom’s sense of right and wrong, that’s a much more compelling turn than just watching him mount a case against her for revenge. I’ve always felt that the revenge was weak to begin with, but stuffing Mom’s soul back inside of her so she’ll take the house down from within? That’s much more interesting. Okay, so it’s a little bit like defeating a dragon with cuddles, but who’s gonna say no to cuddles?

Yes, dramabeans exposed the flaw with a flourish and then revealed why we don't care.

Recaps and discussion really add dimension to the drama viewing experience. Particularly this drama, everybody has been great.

You have to watch Healer! As crazy as it seems that there could be something better than Pinocchio out there, Healer is! It's amazing! You won't be sad for long!

I totally agree! The only shows I'm passionate about right now are this and Healer. It's interesting how they take some of the same elements (reporters trying to discover and fix the wrongs of the previous generation, an OTP whose parents' relationship makes theirs complicated, etc.) and get completely different shows. However, both are well written with interesting and layered characters and OTPs I adore. Now I just need both not to fall apart in the end. Please oh please drama gods!

I totally agree. While Pinocchio did a much better job of firmly grabbing my attention from the get-go, Healer isn't a bad alternative. There are reporters as well, but the feel is completely different from Pinocchio. It's great.

@ ruexxi You'll love the action and romance. Healer's got a great heroine as well!

Exactly my thoughts. I still like and watch Pinnochio, have loved Lee Jong Seok since I first saw him in Secret Garden, but I'm watching and re-watching Healer as soon as subs are out. Comments on the DB Healer thread were topping 1750 for the recent episode at last glance.

I'm now watching Pinnochio as my backup k-drama as I eagerly wait for the next Healer episode. Talk about drama crack!

I agree with what everyone said about Healer here. I loved Pinocchio for it's refreshing take on our leads but the romance I found for me doesn't have as much FEELS as Healer does. If you love Pinocchio then the next best drama is Healer. Everyone dramabeans is spazzing about the drama. Episode 10 (our recent episode has 2100+ comments in its thread and ccunting!).

Healer isn't the most talked about show for no reason, it's really that good! Same as Pinocchio, I love this drama too, but now my drama crack is Healer <3

1) Maaan... I am getting really annoyed at how people don't seem to take In Ha seriously. Who is Dal Po to decide for her what sacrifices she gets to make. We watched her struggle through and make the brave choice to turn over the documents only for it to come to naught. I don't get why everyone in this show is so dead set on telling In Ha what's good for her instead of letting her decide on her own (except Dad... he's awesome)

2) I'm pretty sure Beom Jo is acting undercover as an informant and he's going to swoop in and reveal everything in time to save the day. Which kind of annoys me because we're probably going to have to watch all the other characters vacillate on making the tough decision on who's going to be the whistle-blower only to have no pay off.

3) I'm really disappointed in the chairwoman. How can you have the presence of mind to erase dozens of CCTV cameras but not even be suspicious when your reporter son places his cell phone face down in front of you when you're getting ready to confess to all kinds of chicanery? Did you even confirm that his three second resignation phone call was real? He could have dialed the number for KFC for all you know?

4) Cap is grown Man Sexy. Yoo Rea should have been crushing on him from the start instead of scrawny, pasty Dal Po. Nothing against him, but I wouldn't even be able to see Dal Po with all of Cap's manliness blinding me all the time. My biggest gripe of this show is not enough Lee Pil Mo. When is he going to get a leading man role? I know he's had the lead on a few dailies and he was Bachelore #2 in Son's of Sol Pharmacy, but I want to see him properly woo a girl on a Prime Time, Weekday drama so I can pretend to be that girl.

5) I really didn't need the arc where Mom was a decent human being once upon a time, nor do I need her to be redeemed to wrap up this show. They've given us no reason to care about the state of her soul up until this point so I don't plan on starting now. I do appreciate that they used her and Dad to highlight the two sides of In Ha's dilemma and that they took pains to point out that neither path is 100% right or wrong (which annoys me even more because they went through all that trouble and then dismissed In-Ha;s choice five minutes after she made it). I do hope that, if Mom ends up being the one to report on the conspiracy, that it's In-Ha who convinces her and not Dal Po. I think that's the only way that will validate In Ha's illogical internalization of all her Mom's wrong.

6) By the way, I was kind of disappointed when In Ha told her Mom she was whistle-blowing as a way to apologize in her Mom's place, instead of because it's the right thing to do. She has such a strong moral compass on her own that I feel it's a bit unnecessary for her to always be so strongly driven by a need to right people's wrongs. I felt the same thing when she tried to urge Dal Po to do the report so he could get his revenge instead of because...

#5- I think InHa takes on her mom's sins in part because she idealized her mom so much. There's also the whole "sins of the father" in this case mother affecting the next generation being played out.
InHa was willing to give up everything for Dal Po, it was clear she didn't actually want to have to give everything up. I saw it more as someone offering to die for you to prove their love, and you telling them they don't have to do that more than anyone's decisions being overridden.
Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds Dal Po a little funny looking. For me, it's his nose and bottom lip. It's something about his nostrils. They're giving me too much Michael Jackson. And that bump in the lip is... what is it?

Yeah I noticed that thing on his lip and can't figure out what it is. Thought it might beva cold sore or something. I can't remember ever seeing bit before this show. He's not a bad looking guy, he's quite cute. I. I'm just at the age where I appreciate Handsome a lot more than Cute. And Cap has Handsome coming out of his ears.

As for In Ha's sacrifice, I think you guys are right. I gave her credit for sacrificing for the greater good but really she did it for Dal Po so he's right to tell her that they'll work together to find a better way.

Z, I was reading through the comments before writing mine and yours is almost exactly how I wanted to format what I wanted to say, except with a few different viewpoints!

1. I was upset that after all the difficulty In Ha had to go through to come to her decision, Dal Po accepted it so readily without giving much thought to what In Ha's actions actually meant. He only thought of himself (which I can't really blame him for since his family was destroyed because of a few text messages), but In Ha didn't cross his mind at all. I was SO happy that later in the episode the show directly answered all my concerns when Dal Po confronted In Ha and made the choice to find another route so she wouldn't have to sacrifice her entire future. That's one thing I love about this show - it really considers every possibility, and it lays it out so well. I've yet to be disappointed with any decision the writer has made thus far.

2. Beom Jo really got on my nerves the first few episodes because his character just seemed so weird and superfluous, but his story really made an impact today though. His entire world came crashing down, and yet I still feel like he has that reporter in him and he's recording everything. Like Z said, I think it was a little foolish that the mom didn't suspect him when he left his phone on the table like that, but I feel she thinks that her son is ultimately someone that would be on her side no matter what so I can see why she wouldn't have any suspicions.

3. I really did not want any redemption for Cha Ok either because she was just SO far gone. I wouldn't call her evil (Beom Jo's mom definitely takes the cake for that title), but she acted so selfish and manipulative over the years and I cannot forgive a woman who would abandon her family and destroy another one for her career. Yet I do like this arc of redemption - I don't believe she will have a happy reunion with In Ha, but she can prove to her and herself that she was once a real reporter and is capable of doing the right thing.

4. Lastly (I know this is super long!), I actually don't want Gyo Dong and Yoo Rae to get together … it’s cute how he pays attention to her because she seems to get ignored, but he IS her superior and that makes for weird and messy office business. I would like it for Cap to take special interest in her like he does with Dal Po and training her as a reporter, but as for love line …

SOOO sad this drama is ending soon, but at the same time I can’t wait to see how it ends!

Yeah, in real life, I would advise Cap and Yoo Rae to stay fast away from each other. But, we all know in Kdramaland you're only allowed to end up with your first love or your boss (and 75% of the time, your first love grows up to be your boss anyway) so they might as well go for it.

You make a good point about Dal Po not thinkingb about In Ha before running with the story but I still think that it is her call bto make if she wants to risk her career for it. One caveat though, if she's sacrificing herself for Dal Po so that he can have his revenge, then he was right to stop her. But, if she did it to put a stop to all the corruption once and for all, I think he should respect her choice. When I first watched it, I thought her motivation was more to expose the v wrongdoing but,.after reading the recap and stone of the comments, I suspect she may have been sacrificing herself for Dal Po's sake. So I'm a little less annoyed at his interference.

I agree so much with #4! I actually watch shows just for him and he was the draw for me on this one. I want him to have his own show, seriously people: it's time.

Not that there is anything wrong with LJS - I look at him and think he's beautiful. Kind of different, but still beautiful. I look at LPM though and giggle while taking a hundred screen shots. Maybe I'm just getting older.

I think I don't care so much about his appearance. I kinda liked how he looks in the beginning. But later I started to dislike his character. And, consequently, the looks.
What I don't like is how he is often behaves authoritatively towards In-ha. As if he knows better what is right and what is wrong. When he clearly doesn't.

Yes, more screen time for our HOT Cap and Yoo Rae pleaseeee!

0

Agreed! That's been a major frustration for me. He can be pretty patronizing towards In Ha. It stinks because we finally have a female lead ego can pretty much take care of herself but her man is still running around telling her what to do.

0

I think for the most part, there are 2 types of leading man actors. The flower boys and the manly men. LJS, Jang Geun Seuk, Lee Min Ho etc. are flower boys. Gong Yoo, Joo Sang Wook, Eric, Won Bin etc. are manly men.

Yep, nothing wrong with Flowers Boys. But put a Flower Boy and a Manly Man next to.each other and I'll pic the Manly Man every time.

0

How about Kim Soo Hyun?

0

I feel like Kim Soo Hyun isn't really either. He's like a boy next door kind of look. He's quite boyish and mellow. He's cute but not in a feminine or pampered looking way. I don't think he's very manly and definitely not rugged either. If you really have to classify him as one I'd say it's nearer to a flower boy but that still feels kind of wrong to say.

I actually wouldn't classify Lee Min Ho as a typical flower boy either. Ignore that he was casted to play Doumyoji for Korean F4, but in general I think he's got a slightly manlier feel than my typical image of a flower boy.

0

I find that I'm all about the second type. The Flower Boys are pretty and I'd never knock anyone liking them, but when I look at them I think more along the lines of: how could I get my skin so clear? Could I wear bangs? What the hell are you wearing? Should a guy over six wear what amounts to leggings? Whereas with the men I'm just thinking: Lord, you're attractive. I like your sweater.

Seriously though, I'm in love with so many of the sweaters I see in these shows.

0

#5- I like that they are giving her character a chance to for redemption, the only thing I have against the plot is that the first scene we see of her even before they hear the lies from the factory workers and the Pinocchio guys she didn’t seem to be wanting to do good as a reporter. It shows that she was hard and that she was eager for a divorce. If anything they should’ve shown that she started to work for the chairwoman before this incident and by the time the explosion happened she was already too deep in to just walk away. She was used to Mommy dearest manipulation that she easily turns the story around. I do not like that Gi’s family incident was her first. It doesn't go with what we have seen from episode 1.

I do like that she is getting a conscience back due to her daughter’s ability/passion to tell the truth no matter how difficult it is.

Regarding Beom Jo, I think the moment he found out the truth from the text messages he had determinate to turn his mom in.

Overall, I love this show from the beginning and i have so much hope for these last episodes!!

Yes, I actually assumed a first that the flashbacks were from before the fire and she was already working for the Chairwoman by that point. I didn't realize that the evidence she was considering whistle-blowing on was the Chemical plant until I read the recaps. It would have made more sense for her to already be part of the Dark Side then, especially considering how little remorse or hesitation she showed in going after Dal Po's family.

the writer's fault. in ha is the first female character i've encountered in a korean drama who has no inner life. no jobs before this, no friends, no bestfriends, no colleagues, no male friends, no boyfriends. if she had been given a strong backstory no one would have taken her for granted because she'd fight them and repel them with only her basilisk stare. but the writer did her this great disservice and made her pretty but lame. what a waste of a great talent. this actress was always great in the two dramas i've seen her but here she's merely decor.

So much good stuff this episode, the kind that gets you choked up, and shed tears along with these awesome characters, especially Inha. That scene with her and Dad, her asking Dad to tell her she did the right thing, augh, it hits me hard. And when Dad just complies with her no questions asked is even more awesome. Dad, jjang! This is what I love about kdrama, where we can see how idealism rolled out to fix things... because though it is hard to do in real life at least we learn how wonderful it could have been if we all are idealists try to fix the world, one evil mother at a time.

I was hoping In Ha resigned from MSC and scouted to YGN though.

Mom's moral fiber had already shown significant cracks before the fire, though. Her penchant for impact over fact is likely why she was chosen by Chaebol Mommy and the director. They saw what was already in her and used it to their advantage.
I'm wondering if they're going to explain why she chose to essentially abandon her child, then treat said child like crap when they're reunited. I know that'll make things right to Inha, but... I don't see how that rights severing all ties with your kid for 13 years.

For one scary moment when they first started showing all the flashbacks I was afraid that they were going to reveal that the chairwoman threatened to harass the family or something and that's why Mom abandoned her daughter and just does whatever she says. I'm having a little trouble with the amount of sympathy they're pulling for the brother, though. He didn't just murder 3 people--destroying 3 families in the process. He actually buried someone of them alive. That's just...

Yes I think there won't be a reunion for the Choi-Song family. She will be forgiven by her family of course but it does not necessarily mean they become one again. Some relationships are just better when apart because the pain inflicted to one another cannot be truly erased, and had been dragged on for too long. She has to live with the consequences of her action and I think she knows that's the the limit of things she can ask from them.

Beom-jo better be doing what I think he's doing, given the glances at his cellphone I do think I'm right.

I've been waiting for a while for big brother to tell Dal-po to give up the revenge and live his own life, don't think that's going to happen though.

True most of the steam was lost because hyungs arc was just so compelling and tension-filled with the murder and all. But even though the second arc of this drama is mellow i think its still well thought out thougj not as exciting as hyings arc but the lessons that goes with it are just so many.

Yeah I agree with that !

The tension is lost but the story arc still feels true and good.
I have never noticed this in dream high, but this writer has a way of writing life lessons into the story and the characters so you feel a sense of satisfaction of crossing the bridge and accepting it.

Like for example, in IHYV, when lawyer cha says that when he has a choice and he knows both is gonna make him regret, he will always choose the one that would make him regret less. And how it sparked in our heroine's head and made her come to terms with what her coming as witness for murder when she was young.

Kind of same here. Regrets are a given as you grow but the little silver lining that exists, makes it all little bit better.

It makes me go watch dream high and see if there was anything she was saying that time.

I think this is gonna be the first kdrama writer I have become a faithful fan of.

Agreed with everything you said! I didn't watched DH though but when I watched IHYV I was amazed with the elements of life lessons that were embedded in the narrative. I love that it wasn't a mere love story because aside from the romance, the cuteness and all, we got to learn meaningful things in life and the feelings was just awesome. I even felt the romance was secondary because the other elements were stronger and much more important. I feel the same thing with Pinocchio. I think I have to watch DH later :)

This drama is so idealistic, I kind of feel like I'm being preached to, instead of just entertained. Let me see...we got lectured on the evils of marketing highbrow backpacks to high school students, irresponsible journalism and now...whistle blowing. It's no wonder that my love for this series is a tad diminished. I wish the writer could do her overview of societal ills without coming across as too preachy.

What are the odds that Beom jo went back to his mother with the sole intent to gather more evidence to use against his mother? The camera keeps panning to his phone so I think he's recording his mother's conversations. But those phones must have huge storage capacities to hold so much!

This drama is rife with conflicts of interest and In ha is smack in the middle of it. Beom jo is too, for that matter. Hey, it's an alternate universe where everybody knows everyone else, I'd be surprised if there were no conflicts of interest!

I don't know if it's just me, but I think Beom-jo calling Princess saying he's resigning was all fake. We get glimpses of his phone after he "called", when they were looking at paintings, and when Ha-Myung came to interview Chaebol Mommy so I'm guessing he's recording everything she says until he has enough evidence/power to do something about it, idk.

2. It's realistic that In Ha wouldn't be able to work in her field after she blew the whistle. That's just the way it is.

3. Once Mom got her conscience back, would it be possible for her to reconcile with Dad? I'm just saying.

4. Yoo Rae x Cap. I like that shipping. :-) If enough of us actually agree to that and they're doing the live shoots...There are three more episodes. :-)

5. Chaebol Mommy is scary. Is what she paid people to do slander and invasion of privacy?

First time posting.
Kudos to the writer, cast and crew. I actually re-read the Pinocchio story(the fairytale). The writer really mapped the characters well. All of them have bits of being Pinocchio, slowly and painfully each of them are trying to be selfless, brave, and true.

For me, the real Pinocchio is Song Cha OK. Being a puppet and all. While Dalpo and Inha are Jiminy Cricket.

Lastly, the father figure Mr. Geppetto for Dalpyung and Harabuji.

Excited for the last three episodes. Thanks girlfriday for the recaps.

Wow, I really like that comparison! I never thought of it that way and it really gives a different perspective.

I've been struggling to see why they called the drama Pinocchio when a large part of the storyline didn't feel like it revolved around the "syndrome". But when you put it that way, it makes a lot of sense.

I think even Cap somewhat functions as a Jiminy Cricket. But I haven't read the fairytale in awhile so perhaps I should do that and then I can see the parallels better.

But once again, thanks for that perspective!

This isn't particularly related to this episode, but it's been bugging me for a while. A long long time ago, when Beom-Jo tells his Chaebol mommy that he wants to meet 'her', she exclaims in response, 'the Pinocchio girl?'.

Wouldn't that imply that she knew that he was receiving all these text messages from Inha through Sung Cha-ok's phone? How else would it have been possible? Wouldn't that be enough to have her alarm bells ringing, that her own son was in possession of a device that could potentially cause her downfall? This is only a small issue that I have, but I guess it isn't really too important.

Besides that, I love how everything manages to tie itself together in the drama, and that nothing shown to us is redundant. Kudos to the writer! ^^

I think it's especially amazing how I feel sympathy for Cha-ok now, now that we know that she's been a pawn in Chaebol Mommy's plans all along. I always thought that it was a bit one-dimensional to have Cha-ok presented as a ruthless reporter, but now that we know about her own inner turmoils, I'm starting to understand her actions much more.

I wish that there were more scenes with Beom-jo in it, particularly after he 'resigned' from MSC. I don't think he actually did, because there are so many shots of his phone, implying that he is recording his mother's words (I'm not too sure on this, it's a just my speculation). But, I feel like he didn't have much of a role in this episode afterwards, but I hope he makes a comeback next episode or something.

I'll be looking forwards to the next episode, although, I'm not sure if I'll be able to handle a week of suspense LOL xD

I think she was not distressed as she sees only his curiosity for 'Pinocchio girl' as a child's play at first. Even if I was her I wont think that's his son's possession of the phone is threatening at all in the beginning. And as we know she's not the type to worry over things, but rather finds every way to make sure all loops are blocked. However this is just another loop she was not able to do so, the other the blackbox. And she could not possibly be that psychic that the victim of her crime is very involved with Pinocchio girl, the very girl his son is obsessed on knowing.

Mom's got a bit of as invisibility complex, I've noticed, so she probably didn't think she'd ever get caught. The phone was erased and Beom Jo soon replaced it with another one so she probably felt like it was safer to keep it under her own roof anyway.

The past few eps have felt underwhelming, after Jae-myung's storyline gave way to Chaebol Mom's reveal as Big Bad (less thrilling intrigue, I suppose). But today's ep was worthwhile because it answered some lingering questions while throwing in some good bits alongside (Grandpa and awesome Dad, Cap and Yoo-rae).

It was so good to see Cha-ok squirm and eventually show some human-ness that certainly gave her another facade than her usual ice queen. And to see how she'd first wanted to do the right thing (shocker!!) then sold her soul to the devil to move up the ranks...her selfish greed to be "top reporter" (as Yoo-rae's done quite so well, *cough*yea right*cough) cost her her soul, morals and her family.

Awesome Dad got awesome-r with the reveal of how his moral compass cost him his career and his marriage. Definitely a good thing that In-ha took after him. And how cute was he to be dismayed that Dal-po moved on so quickly after breaking up with In-ha...only to realize that it was In-ha and that she'd been in Dal-po's room! :) I also loved the parallel reversals of Dad brushing teeth and looking like the total opposite of awesome dad, and In-ha aegyo-ing Grandpa for money and having him surprise her by saying he'll provide whatever she needed.

I'm pretty sure Yoo-rae 's buddy didn't get his soda from Cap, because Cap was walkin on by with only two in his hands -- but what a way to deflate her more after her sad realization that Dal-po likes In-ha and not her -.- I am on the fence about shipping her with Cap though, as much awesome Cap (and Lee Pil-mo) is. I guess I'm thinking the usual kdrama second leads falling for each other bit...so I figured she'd be paired up with Beom-jo in the end. Not that Cap & Yoo-rae don't suit each other well...it's fitting that both were saesaeng fans.

And I was impressed that Dal-po actually gave the damning evidence back to Cha-ok and to suggest she be the one to reveal it all -- there's that darned redemption arc that I was not hoping for. It wasn't surprising that Beom-jo faked out that resign call and actively sticking by mon to record her every word. After yesterday's ep, I had the inkling that he'd be likely to make the reveal and take down mom himself...so it's good to see that go down that path.

Looking forward to the final stretch! :)

yeah, up to episode 12 (as in, everything featuring hyung as the star of that arc) it was great, but after the Big Bad reveal of ep 13 things did go a little flat. But episode 17 brought back everything this show does best - families, romance, characters. (except for hyung, who does his obligatory 30 seconds of fanservice scene from behind prison glass. And still managed to make me want to cry when he saw the messages)

Yoo-rae's buddy Ho-chul kiiiiind of seemed to be nursing an unrequited crush on her himself, based on some looks in previous episodes so it makes sense he lied about the extra drink ;)

And yeah, Beom-jo is totally recording all that damning conversation, the repeated close-ups of his phone suggest that very strongly.

(if I can use Harry Potter analogies, his ma is Dolores Umbridge brand evil, while Song Cha-ok is more of a Snape - though a Snape who didn't turn to the good side in time. I'm ok with her earning a redemption since the writing and acting have made it pretty clear she isn't quite as stony as Dal-po and In-ha think, so if she does get a redemption arc I'm ok with it. I mean, even Darth Vader got one!)

You're absolutely right about how the past few eps have been...it fell a bit flat but I still watched on, because this is one of my two crack dramas :) And YES, we need more Hyung!!! I'm hoping that we'll have more of him...especially if and when everything will get exposed. I'm secretly hoping that he'll get a lighter sentence because of Ro-sa and Cha-ok (despite his crimes). His crying made me teary eyed as well :(

But...I'll be even more happy if the last 3 eps prominently feature Hyung, Grandpa, Dad, Yoo-rae and Cap!! :P

Yeah, I've noticed Ho-chul (I never got his name down pat, always heard _o-chul, lol) looking that way too...so you're right, it makes sense that he'd do that :P It's still a bit weird for me to see him here because I saw him in The Legendary Witches (when I was peeking in for a few)...he was a perv there, haha.

And, I'm kinda embarrassed to say...I've never read Harry Potter -.-

I really love the Cap x Yoo Rae shipping. That would be very cute and I hope they both end up together!
As piggy tokki mentioned, I have to say those Bum Jo's phone shots are suspicious. What if he really didn't quit his job and is trying to get evidence by recording everything his mom has to say?
Ugh, I can't wait for the next two episodes. I'm pretty impatient and I want to find out what happens next (especially with Bum Jo, his phone and his mom and not to forget, In Ha and her mom).
I really hope Sung Cha Ok admits everything soon. I started getting a good feeling about her after the ending of this episode.

So far, I am loving this drama and not a single episode is not worth watching! I am saddened though that it will be ending soon :(
Looking forward to what happens next! :D

Did he have a formal letter of resignation? I haven't seen him hand one. Have you? I thought he just faked the resignation.

And I do love Cap x Yoo Rae together.

I agree with Song Cha Ok. If she could whistle blow and the backlash, I hope she gets Dad in her corner for support, doing what he did all those years ago that she chose not to do.

I always wondered how someone like In-ha's dad ended up married to Song Cha-ok, and the info about his past job and whistleblowing explains why.

I get more and more excited about this drama every episode. I actually like that they've toned down the "action" and now it's getting more introspective.

The ONLY problem I have with Cap and Yu Rae is the age difference. Assuming she's the same age as Dal Po, then she was 10 (ish? I don't remember exactly) when Cap was already in his early 20s as a rookie reporter.

Otherwise I agree they would be super cute together!

I'm assuming it's about a fifteen year age gap, which is not unheard of (my husband and I are fourteen years). I really only have a problem with age gaps when people are in vastly different stages of life, like teenagers with their teachers. But they are both professional adults. The only conflict of interest is that he is her boss but, as i stud above, that's the main way tomeet someone in KDramaland.

I agree there will be a resolution for beom jo...
He's recording all the conversations...just notice how the camera focuses on the phone when he's talking to mom and when she's talking with the reporter...that's how the truth will come out or be verified in the end...
That's why he told in ha to stand her ground and do what she needs to do while he does what he needs to do (get more concrete evidence)...
I'm gonna miss this drama once it ends

Well, assuming Yoo-rae is the same age as Dal-po and In-ha (26-27) and taking Lee Pil-mo's real age into account (he turned 38 in 2014) the age gap would be about 10-12 years?

It's a large age gap but not that outrageous since she's in her later 20s (would be a different matter if she was actually a teenager). Given that Yoo-rae pretty much has no purpose in the story now, looks like this is all the storyline she'll get, even if I like them both /sigh

Question - does it make it okay for all the evil that mom did in the past because she is now willing to apologize and make amends? Ignoring her own daughter for 13 years, driving a mother to commit suicide with her son, breaking up a family, jailing a teenager and making Ha Myung so frustrated he committed murder because he felt at the time it was his only choice? Let's not forget that however culpable Beom jo's mother is, Cha Ok was a willing participant. So now agreeing to fess up now makes it all okay?

It's a common troupe in kdramas that however evil a mother figure is, the fact that she is willing to fess up and make amends makes everyone want to forgive her and wipe the slate clean so we can all live happily ever after. I call that BS. And is part of the idealism I referred to in an earlier comment. What would save this drama for me is a touch of realism:

that In ha was angry, bitter even at mom for abandoning her during her formative years instead of pathetically grateful for her attention - because that would be normal;

And that mom fessing up and doing the right thing after being cornered by Dal Po doesn't automatically wipe the slate clean. It would have been better (more sincere) if she had fessed up on her volution under the strength of her own convictions rather than being talked into it by Dal Po.

I think there's a mindset in us that forgiveness equals letting that person off the hook and it is not. Some people forgive and still wants the offender to have some jail time or to distance themselves from the victim because that's the consequence of the wrong they have done. Even God forgives but He let us go through the consequence of our sins- broken relationship or whatever it is- primarily because we have to learn our lesson. SCO will be pardoned by her family but her family is not the law, the law is clear that there will be punishment and if the brother of Hamyung got his, SCO cannot escape from hers.

Getting fired from her job and not being able to become a reporter again? Not to mention people hating her? Because that's what's going to happen. You will get your justice but she will need to take steps on her part in order to show that she's sincere about being forgiven.

So it's final dawned on me ... that this all took place last winter (2013-2014) ... so I'm fully expecting the ubiquitous Kdama time jump at the end ... what will we see of our Heroes when we jump forward to 2015? And from what time period was Dal Po was doing his narratives?

Hi everyone! This is the first time I'm posting here.

Anyway, this episode really made me understand Song Cha Ok's actions more - most notably when it came to Dalpo's family. Looking back, I can see that despite her ice queen facade, she was actually bothered and shaken up because of the Ki brothers. Not only when their mom committed suicide, but also during the interview with Ki Jae Myung. I think that at that point, she was starting to feel the gravity of what she had done. If she became a whistle blower 13 years ago, then it wouldn't have happened. I know that she was bribed and given a big opportunity, but honestly, if you were in her shoes - given to what happened in her marriage (dad losing his job, etc.), she might have done it to avoid what she experienced first hand. I'm not saying she was right, but at that kind of situation, I believe that a lot of people would do the same thing that she did especially in the world we live in nowadays. So I applaud this show, for giving us two sides of the story and for showing us what would have happened if we did the wrong or the right thing (in this case, In Ha's mom and dad). In addition, I'm glad that it made us realize that even if we get to the top and fulfill our goals, as long as we did something against our conscience, good moral, or whatever you call it, it will haunt us back in the end - in any form and in any way it can.

Thank you for the recap, btw :) I can't wait for next week!

disagree ... while she may have had a moment of integrity ... she dove head first in doing the Chairwoman's bidding. She's like Darth Vader ... totally evil ... but in the end, we may see her humanity come through to save her daughter.

I didn't see any signs of her being bothered or shaken up at all 13 years ago. We're only seeing cracks in the facade now that she's about to get caught. Seems like her only regret is not getting away with it.

In my opinion though, I think that she may have regretted her decision because of how determined Dalpo and In Ha are in speaking the truth compared to her cowardice. She had mentioned it, that she was idealistic too about everything before just like In Ha. But Maybe she just got scared and pressured because she didn't want her dreams of being a reporter vanish just like that. What she did was wrong, and the only thing that can 'possibly' redeem her now is to speak the truth about what happened before and really admit that what she did was wrong (and apologize too not just to the brothers but also to chan soo)

I love this drama! Especially the relationship between Dalpo and Cap. Cap gives Dalpo the advice he needs to be a better person and reporter. It's great to watch.

Also very glad Inha didn't have to give up her job. It was her dream to be a reporter and it would have been so sad for her to lose this part of her.

The show makes me smile. Love the cuddles! Can't wait until next week. :)

I'm glad episode 17 is a return to form (well, good form, not great like ep 12 and before) for Pinocchio. It was good to see Dad and grandpa at home again, the Choi family is awesome <333 and Dad is even more awesome for being a loving, supportive dad who is willing to chew out Dal-po for seemingly moving on from In-ha too fast (that scene between them was adorable)

(and yay for adorable In-ha/Dal-po hugs, as well as a couple who actually deal with their problems without noble idiocy - never seen a drama that was so hellbent on avoiding that particular cliche, and avoided it so successfully)

I literally pumped my arm in the air when Dal Po asked Manager Song to report it. I was thinking maybe, maybe Mom will step up and report it, but the fact that Dal Po ASKS her too, WOW! I didn't see it coming and I love it!

I love the side relationships, but I also appreciate that the writers don't try to focus on them TOO much. Other dramas have done that and it ends up dragging the entire show.

This show. So much love!

just a teeny question from a former fan who loves more than anything to pour cold water on the face of this writer hack? where and what episode did this hijo de putang mother ever let on that she wants to be redeemed? sweetie pie, there is a long line towards reaching redemption road and nowhere in the previous episodes did this character ever shouted, groaned, moaned, squeaked, even muttered "i want to be redeemed, baby. redeem me, please."

you come 3 episodes to the ending and you suddenly turn this evil slut around and let her play like mater dolorosa????!!!! eh? where and what writing school did you learn this from?

i am curious. is in ha really that delicious that a sane man like dal po, who is committed to his job as a reporter, suddenly turns around and gives evil mom all the evidences his girlfriend gathered so that the mom could redeem herself? or, is fighting with mom suddenly given him a different POV of his enemy? she's now, you know, suddenly more tempting to be on his back as opposed to say, opposite him bickering with a table between them?

oh come on! i want to know since he's obviously undercutting and wasting his girlfriend's efforts by giving her mom, who long ago sold her soul to the devil, all hard copies of their evidence. wait, do i smell an i hear your voice noona romance in here or what?

i don't like to be unkind but i can't stand sloppy writing like this. i know you want to be that writer who transported his secret garden as heirs to please the younger set but please don't act like we're stupid, k? i really, really hate that.

your main actors are cute though. and i love the grandpa and dad!

I really don't get why a "former fan" of this show is continuing to write sniveling comments about the show/cast/writer/plot on the thread...you hated it enough to drop it. I've read your comments on earlier ep threads and I never understood why you could not open your closed-minded self to actually sit down and watch this for what it is, without comparing it to something else. Is it really that hard?

Oh right, you're a diehard Park Shin-hye hater and constantly comparing Pinocchio to I Hear Your Voice! But I'm sorry to say...this is absolutely nothing like IHYV. At all. Same writer, sure...but it's a different drama altogether. And suddenly now she's a "hack"?? Ha...just because you don't like the writing doesn't mean she's a hack -- she's doing a great job. As for name-calling a woman a "slut" -- that just goes to show what you think of a woman you don't like.

Leaving you a response to your comment is 99+% likely what you wanted...so yes, I will humor you just this once. Buh-bye.

I was hoping Cha-Ok would make it to Episode 20 without a redemption arc. Such a rarity in kdramaland to have the evil mother figure never repent for her actions.

Disagree with you that Song Cha-Ok is a "slut."

Good one...using the Latin phrase Mater Dolorosa (Mother of Sorrows = the sorrowful mother/ the Virgin Mary sorrowing for the dead Christ, esp as depicted in art.)

There is a very strong event , and that is when Song Cha Ok reacts to Boem Jo's mother's request to meet In ha and continue her influence on her daughter. That was a very important scene.

Song Cha Ok flinched ever so slightly and caught herself as that realization registered in her - to have her daughter live such a life as she has. One thing is for sure, Song Cha Ok has showed no signs of happiness - professionalism, power, ruthlessness - yes, but happiness, no. More than redemption, is the deep sense of the mother to protect her daughter from the kind of life she has lived. She thought it was right, and her ex-husband pathetic, but when it registers that such a life would continue on to her daughter - that is what is going to motivate her to report it- her daughter. Boem Jo's phone recordings will become significant when his mother will use Song Cha Ok as the scapegoat. That is when his evidence will kick in.

At first I was so hesitant on watching the drama because Park Shin Hye's past roles were all the same; there wasn't a speck of challenge. After I watched Episode 1 everything changed she was so fresh and renewed and strong. Different from her other roles!

I heard Kim Woo Bin was casted but I'm also grateful because Lee Jong Suk was chosen because it suited him better! I really like this drama and the plot, everything is well-played! Yay for Pinocchio!

Thank you for the recap. It`s always fun to read.

I`ve been enjoying this drama from ep 1 till ep 17 and is anticipating the ending. This is the first drama that i followed the live broadcast from the start. Usually i would watch a drama after all the episodes are broadcasted but this one just got me so interested with the story and the acting. So thinking that it will end this week makes me a bit sad and at the same time happy. Sad that i won`t be seeing Inha and Dalpo/Hamyung on wed/thurs but happy that i could catch up on my sleep hahaha

But now thinking that Hyunbin`s drama is starting after Pinocchio makes me not so sure with the can-catch-up-with-sleep thing..

Till the end Pinocchio fighting!!!

The Choi family, MSC and YGN are the best. Waiting for the last 3 episodes.

This drama has done something I never thought possible. It has made me respect Park Shin Hye as an actress. Her role in this drama couldn't be more different from her previous roles.

She is strong, independent, selfless yet practical, and she has even learned how to kiss. She doesn't fall for the jerk, she picks the nice guy. I could go on and on.

I really love this drama and am sad to see it end.
