Count down: 71 hours.
Healer episode 13 preview is out. youtube.com/watch?v=boRg7F4HEGc
1.So , it looks like she does find him and takes him to the Hospital ( not his hideout like some of us hoped :D)
2. She seems to be teasing him and wants him to confess on his own :D. She says she's very angry (??) my limited understanding of Korean makes me feel crippled.
4.Looks like myung hee is asking all the right questions.

It's just a teaser, not sure if these can be called spoilers. Unless we can't discuss teasers but I don't remember the rules about them. In the threads people usually talk about the teasers all the time.

I know it's silly, but I hallucinate it at times. They play it a LOT in each episode. ?

0

It's a silly song, yes, but oddly addicting.

0

shall we suggest they use something from Ed Sheeran. mmm... he is one that don't sell looks, yet can shudder hearts by his voice, boy can he writes too... if you have Sheeran at background as junghoo yearned for youngshin.. its simply breathtaking.

0

maybe maybe JCW should sing something too for ost.. he can sing too. a multi-talents actor. yeah, he is an actor, not just a star...

0

Would you refresh my memory on the scene/significance of the star? I have vague recollection of it, but don't remember the scene.

Thanks!

It was episode 7, I think or 8. She walked back home after the elevator accident and was hoping Healer would come meet her. She then calls Bong sookie to talk and while speaking to him on the phone, she makes a paper star. She knows Healer is around watching over her ^^ so if she finds the star with Bong soo, she knows he has to be the healer.

Right, right, when she's in the phone booth.

Thanks for jogging my memory!

Thanks for the summary!
It's funny that I forgot about the star but remember the overall scene vividly.

I remember thinking out loud, do they still have phone booths in Seoul??

*SPOILERS IF YOU DIDN'T WATCH THE PREVIEW*
I think CYS figured out that he is healer (not in the beginning of the episode, but later) but wants him to admit it first. So she says that she'll wait, but is really angry.

And Moon Ho & Jung Hoo will work together again :D

How angry do you think she will be? ? he did say while conversing with ahjumma that she'd beat him up but get over it quickly. I find it amusing that she's using the almost handhold as a signal for him to confess. Ah, the feels.

Hmm.. I think.. she might not be that mad about him having lied to her in the beginning, but rather about the fact that he's still lying to her. She thought she became closer to Healer & Bong Soo, but he's still lying to her. Even though she knows and he knows that she knows..

So do you think he knows she knows? I hope not, because I liked the "her knowing but not him knowing that she knows"(do you follow lol) theory the best. :D

Well.. I assume she told HIM that she'd wait, so I.. guess he knows..

But yeah, that'd be cool too, although then, she might start to dislike the fact that he lies to her, even more.

Happy OT everyone =)

So I guess the Healer addiction is REAL! I mean… I even dreamt about Healer (so Ji Chang Wook basically) last night – with a dash of Kill Me Heal Me which was kinda funny :D

As for the drama Healer… My feels… I can’t deal with them but what else is new^^ This week was great and as much as I hated the cliff hanger I loved it as well. It always raises the stakes when the hero gets injured and how much did I love that Ahjumma called Young Shin?! And then there are those hand holding scenes, the hug, the food preparing/eating… Who needs kisses or more when scenes like those already drive me crazy?! *fans self*
Preview for ep 13 nearly killed me again today and Monday needs to come FAST.
Oh and all the BTS videos are hilarious! They seem to have a lot of fun.

Kill Me Heal Me: I actually like this quite a lot. It’s pretty silly but Ji Sung is doing a great hob with the different personalities so far and I’m looking forward do the next eps ;)

Pinocchio: Aww I’m gonna miss them! It was a nice final week with lots of great moments but grandpa… *sigh* Of course he would make me cry one last time^^

Heart To Heart: I liked the first two episodes but it has such a different feeling than I expected. Which isn’t bad I was just surprised I guess.

I enjoyed the first 2 eps of Family Is Coming and really want to watch that one but subbing is SO SLOW T_T As it is with Dr. Frost + Perseverance Goo Hae Ra. I have no idea what’s going on at viki bc except for Pinocchio no other drama has been subbed particularly fast (Healer was a first this week with that fast subs and I can’t speak for other Mon-Tue dramas bc I’m not watching them). I really hope that some of the Pinocchio subbers go to other dramas bc otherwise I’m THIS close to dropping the one’s with slow subs.

Running Man… Lee Seo Jin was so hilariously grumpy it was awesome :D I enjoyed the Kwang Soo + Jong Kook couple so much and it showed that they’re really close off camera!

1N2D continues to be great this season and the past few episodes had THE highlight! Yu PD getting to taste fish sauce xD It was priceless^^

Oh man yes, the Viki subs are killing me!!!! I mean I really appreciate the subbers because they do it all for free but I also agree that it making want to drop (or not start) certain shows.

I thought Lee Seo Jin was most funny in RM but there were moments went I felt bad that others had to pick up his slack. I enjoyed the Kwang Soo/Jong Kook dynamics more. I really enjoy the core group of the show.

It sucks so much though for a few shows that just have license for Europe and QCs it's more understandable bc that means not as many Eng-Kor subbers to begin with... But the others? The teams are so small :( I really hope that Pinocchio subbers join other teams now that the show is over!
I won't ever complain about subbers bc I know how much work it is especially now since I'm subbing myself again (German subs for Family Is Coming).

They did a good job though especially Jae Suk but what else is new^^
I really hope they're doing a cast only ep soon again bc those are still the best!

Props to you for doing subs! I think I'm more frustrated by shows like Frost where the subs were goignalong at a certain pace and then....not so much. But it seems like some shows have picked up. Persevere GHR is at 100% for ep1 now and not that far behind for ep2 so maybe my grumpiness will wear off.

Jae Suk really works his butt off. It actually took be a while to warm up to him when I first started the show, but now I absolutely understand and agree with why he's the main MC.

I wanted to make this purely an „Ahjumma actress appreciation thread“, but many things have happened and I need to rant a little. But I´ll at least start as intended.

I think it is unfair how most swoons, praise and admiration goes to men in their 20-ies and 30-ies, not that they wouldn´t have deserved that praise, mostly they do, but there are so many fantastic actresses (let´s not say ahjummas, let´s just say „40+“) who are soooo great, but are hardly ever paid attention to by drama fandom. Woman + over a certain age, I am more and more bugged how, first of all, their sometimes brilliant performances are overlooked because of the young male star, and second, they get type-casted. They deserve more recognition I think. Just to name a few:

Park Joon-geum from Secret Garden, King of dramas, Heirs, Rooftop prince and many more. Emotionally draining job to play it. She is actually quite cute. And has great funny faces. A lot of people seem to mix up the character and the actress, they can´t get past that she has played scheming chaebols. I bet she is actually a real hoot. They just need to give a woman clothes more worthy of a woman, sometimes she is ridiculously dressed in dramas.

Kim Mi-Kyung. Zettai Kareshi ahjumma version much? Did she arrive at the door of the studio in plastic wrap with a choice of 280 programs on the secret menu on her back? Such a range. Such diversity of roles. She just devours roles like an Ahjumma Packman: om nom nom nom…. STILL HUNGRY! Such enthusiasm. No really, I think she is a robot or an undercover superhuman.

Kim Hae-Sook – seriously fantastic in good roles and bad. Dare I say but in Pinocchio she is almost surpassing Bad Daddy for me…or well, maybe on par. Or… ok, I am not brave enough to push Bad Daddy off the pjedestal just yet. Goodness knows what he´ll do to me. Imagine Mommy meeting Bad Daddy, in the same frame, the chills! Can we get these actors together in a drama? But she was so nice in I hear your voice and it is weird….maybe Awesome Mom came back from the dead as an evil one….but wasn´t she against revenge? Well, if you beome a zombie promises kinda fade…. Anyway, a long long list of work, and I intent to watch some just because of her. And in Marriage, not dating, she was yet another type of mom, but so great in it. Kim Hae Sook, you rock!

Mom from Valid Love, Lee Young-Ran, has a difficult joba head. Her character is getting dementia. That is so sad. Man, if I think of my own family, i would not want to deal with that. It is so heartbreaking, it is like your batteries are half-empty so you are just 80 % functional or something. But instead of tragic, she plays it out with cheerfulness, like Mom doesnt even realize anything is wrong and thinks everyone else is acting silly, and that makes it pretty chilling. OMG poor mom, seriously.

Na Young-hee a.k.a. Song Yi´s mom. Wow, such a long list of roles! At first I didnt like that role, or the actress, but she sort of reminds me...

Ok, I did well, right? I protected women rights and stuff, and fought against age discrimination. Now can I go back to praising the hot male actors? Huh?

I am watching Kill Me, Heal Me. While most of you find your thrill in Healer, the latter has not been convincing enough for me. It doesnt really pull me in. Perhaps I am a person of More Fantasy, a goofy type, living in a different realm or something… Then again, I like the realistic style of Valid Love – I couldn´t put my finger on it before, but it sort of feels like Shut Up. Now I understand why I love the athmosphere in that drama…Kill Me, Heal Me on the other hand, might be a little silly, unbelievable, but I believe it, because MY world is more like that, than that of Healer. Comprende? Ok, last episode of Healer was pretty good, but … lets say, I was hanging on more to every second of City Hunter back in the day, I was more on the edge. Just a little bit …. Maybe it is because Moon Shik will never be as breathtakingly merciless as Bad Daddy. Good villains make the show. The evil side here is…so robotic and the story is moving so slowly. I am really sorry, healibers, but this is no reason to call me a hater or anything. Even fangirls gotta accept difference of opinions, and I´ll accept you going gaga and move on. No need for y´all to get defensive at all, I will leave you your crack.

Anyway, back to Kill Me, Heal Me - I think Ji Sung is doing a great job and what I like most is, he is an actor who knows how to use the setting, the props, everything in the vicinity. I also rewatched some ep of PTB to confirm this hunch, and so true. Some actors just stand and talk, but he knows how to play around with stuff around him. Twirl them around, jump on them, crawl, kick whatever. He can make anything into a „screen partner“. In KMHM it is the mirror and reflecting surfaces I guess. Car mirror, bathroom mirror, window etc. He knows how to use the set and respond to other actors. I am reminded of my own acting classes (yes, we had some for work as museum guides). I like it when the actor is not just a talking head, but acts with his whole body.
And I also like the Bruce Wayne-Alfred click with the secretary. Generally, I get Batman vibes, and Batman is like my favorite „human hero“. < wrote this before they actually MENTIONED Batman on the show, hah. Do Hyuns alter egos dont have any superpowers, they just have different skills. It is more like survival skills and resourcefulness, no special training, no teacher but yourself. learning to cope all on your own. I wonder if drama writers read my post here a year ago how I want more superhero-like characters in kdramas or kdrama versions of Superman and stuff. I think this split personality makes a much more interesting vigilante, it is part involuntary and unpersonal, then he makes up his mind and turns from this „non-person“ into a real hero himself. That´s really cool. But I find it hilatrious and totally random Segi means...

And jumping back to the beginning: I wish to see more 40+ actresses getting work they deserve for their skills, playing a MAIN character who stands on her own, is not just a „mom“, also not a love interest, also not the evil machinator ora n adulteress, but something else. Cause they are seriously awesome! Maybe a female musician, artist, writer, something like that. And it would be great to know what Hacker-Ahjumma does on her time off…. Bet it is something outrageously hilarious. Masybe flying over the city like Batman…

About Geun-Seokie: so sad and frustrated, and worried. As I am also a teacher, I never break one rule: don´t pick on the weird kids. Never. You need to understand and support them. What great wrong did he do, huh? It is all just cause he is so different. I will not tolerate it. It is just bullying. Discrimination. They singled him out like that. My own personality was nearly destroyed because of something analogical – she is different, she is weird, so lets just get rid of her, who cares how she feels, who cares about the background and the truth (Pinocchio deja vu much?). It was really really a tough and dark time. I don´t want the samet hing to happen here. They are going totally over the top – even given he denied or lied or whatever, well maybe he did it cause he knew he´d get a public beating like this regardless of what he does? Just say sorry, sincerely, isn´t that enough? and I am so disappointed none of the Three Meals participants of staff have even said sorry or anything. Like they can kick him out and not look back, not feel any remorse. No matter what problems this guy has, he hasn´t deserved to be treated this way. They are mocking and humiliating him, even if hei s not perfect, even if they don´t like him, do they have to be so vicious and uncaring? I hope he won´t give up and makes a comeback, even if it is hard. I am nobody famous, but I went through something very similar, and that´s why I can´t help but feel awful, sorry and worried.

To cheer you all up after this, Estonian Music Awards concert: http://www.tv3play.ee/sisu/eesti-muusikaauhinnad/535337?autostart=true
Not that you understand much - don´t worry, I don´t understand anything either cause they speak such crappy estonian, the younger generation is bringing the level down blaa blaa blaa whining, but there are some cool performances and you know, most of them are just cute. See any flower boys there? I bet. Karl-Erik Taukar (in checkered blue suit, performing about 44 min in) caught your eye (while kissing on-screen). And HIS STRUT! Ooh la la. I can explain later what is going on if you are interested. The ones with blond curly hair are Curly Strings (performing at 1:30) whose songs I mentioned two weeks ago on OT. They won 4 awards. If you saw one of them on the stage 6 times thats no wonder. That´s Jalmar Vabarna, who has 8 bands…. They call most awards ceremonies Vabarnafest because of that. The hosts are Ines (ESC 2000) and Ott Lepland. Ewert and the Two Dragons (perorming at 58 min in) just released their third album and they are back after touring 4 years in the U.S. National Mens´Choir RAM where my dad sings also won for classical album of the year.

And also, Tangerines was nominated for an Oscar, first time in history, Estonian movie, wooohheeeee!

So I have 2 positive things to keep my mind off everything worrysome. No, 3 actually – one of the words I invented was among the winners of word competition. Remember? Yay! And the tapestry is finished too. Life is going ok, and I am not just living for the great moments. If you only wait for the winning times you will be unsatisfied 99% of your time. Be happy.

She may be A psychiatrist but at this point, she is still not HIS psychiatrist. Their relationship is personal level, so using slang in front of him may not be overly out of line.
She and Se Gi have already lowered their speech with each other - at least they did at the club. I'd have to watch the hospital scenes with them again to see if she started adding the yo's again.
It felt to me in episode 4 that she had no intentions of being his psychiatrist, rather was offering friendship - which was rejected.
I think the main reason why she'll become his doctor is because people already think they are dating which will act as her cover. More importantly, she is the only one Se Gi will listen to.

I love the scene in the previews where Cha do Hyun holds up a picture of Han Chae Yeon and threatens Se Gi "If you mess with my woman, I'll mess with yours!"

It's a recent slang term too. Older Korean people aren't too familiar with it and rarely say it.

I agree , and I often lament that more 30/40+ actresses are not lauded as they should be. It's sad that what I see happening a lot is that actresses get married in their late 20s/30s, then disappear to maybe make a comeback later b/c there are so few roles available after a certain age. It's either young and attractive or a mother. We've been getting a few 30 something dramas here and there but not enough.

My absolutely favorite actress actress (as in I like her purely for her awesome talent) is Lee Mi-sook.

I just love love love her b/c she really just shines in all of her roles. She can take a character that I usually would loathe and want to fast-forward through and make me love to hate her. Dramaland is full of those wretched conniving mothers and I just roll my eyes and deal with it. However, whenever Lee Mi-sook plays THAT mother I always watch and she never disappoints.

I too have felt like she (and some others) don't get the recognition they deserve b/c they're "not young" anymore.

Yup! It'd be cool if there was like a biopic or if she played a version of herself at some point. I was googling her because I noticed a conspicuous trend that she and Kim Gap-soo are often paired as lovers and was trying to see how many times and got distracted by an article about her in a scandal with a much younger man. I don't remember why it was an issue but I was a little impressed. Anyway it'd make a good drama: Actress and her love triangle with frequent co-star and hot younger man. A tale of ambition perhaps? Like a better version of Miss Ripley.

0

@ museofmanymasks: I would love that kind of story. how to play it on screen without revealing that the feelings you play are real!

0

love the idea!!

When I was reading up on her, I did see something about her and a younger man in 06. She divorced in 07 after 20 yrs of marriage so I wondered (1) if the rumor was true and (2) if it was the reason behind the divorce. I didn't want to read more into it b/c the rumor was from her former agency who was suing her so it could have just been them trying to smear her name. Idk but if ever there was a believable May-December romance, LMS would definitely be able to pull it off. She is something fierce.

I wouldn't mind being like her when I grow up either. Did you see her 90s makeup in Miss Korea? Even that throwback look didn't diminish her shine! Blog post idea alert! I may have to do an ode to LMS soon!

0

Ah yeah I read about the suing too. Figured it was slander also. Still, good subplot for the drama! Go forth and post! I think I have one brewing myself.

This is interesting discussion about ajumma actresses. I was just reading in a magazine (before i opened my computer to read OT), how Reese Witherspoon had the same thoughts about there not having good roles for women over 30. So, she just bankrolled 'Wild'. Hollywood thinks she is going to be a successful producer. So possibly, scripts with good roles for women can be crowd-funded now. Any screenplay writers among DB regulars?

All the ajhummas you mentioned, I love. Park Joon-geum was on one episode of happy together with Choi Jin-hyuk and she was really funny when she got to speak. And she even admitted to squeeing when she heard Choi Jin-hyuk's voice over the phone for the first time, I guess you're never too old to fangirl over Choi Jin-hyuk hahaha.
I love every one of Kim Hae-sook's roles I've seen. She's such a beautiful and versatile actress.
Kim Mi-kyung is also amazing, I agree about her being ajhumma pac-man when it comes to acting, and she's funny too. Not to mention smoking hot. I love her.
I've kind of developed a little crush on the actor that plays Kim Moon-shik in Healer. He's so handsome and suave, and talented too.

Yay for Ahjumma love!! I think they're definitely the most overlooked in the acting world (not just a kdrama issue but acting everywhere). I do think a lot if it is the roles that are being written. Even the ahjussis get meatier roles. But they're really talented and are often so vibrant when given oy a few lines. I am a bit tired if the evil rich mom trope though...although it provides more challenges than just 'good mom' role.

I think in general the women are written as side pieces to the guys. So once those women reach a certain age they're mostly just moms because, again, their value is just the link to the guys. Ooooh I'm so cynical today.

exactly! so I want some really thrilling roles for women 40+ cause...well Kim Mi-Kyung manages to get slightly different roles. How? She must have a good nose. Or maybe the Healer helps her?

I worte above what I want. Older women are still individuals who have their own dreams and goals in life. they are not just Moms or cancer patients. They are not just mens´ sidekicks. would it cause an outrage in Korea to shake up that patriarchic system? give them, you know, a LIFE?

Sometimes I think Kim Mi-Kyung is the Meryl Streep of kdramas. One whiff of an ahjumma roles with some tpe of depth and she gets called. And she rocks it too.

I'm OK with female moms since there are many many women who are homemakers. But write them with depth! These roles are clearly not written by moms because it's like they have nothing going on inside their minds. *sigh*

I forgot to mention above, regarding your comment about Ji Sung knowing how to use the set. So true!

I first noticed this while watching him in Royal Family, which is where I first saw him.

I look forward to seeing him in Kill Me, Heal Me. I'm not watching it now, but I'll catch it a little later.

Ha, I love the different topics you write about each week ☺. And you're right, without the ahjummas or let's call them 40+ ladies, dramas wouldn't be fun. Like Kim mi kyung in healer, she's hilarious. I loved her character in plus nine boys too. ( you did watch it, right ?) I love that she swears a lot , in this series. Your list includes many awesome ahjummas, I just want e to add a few more.
1. There's the awesome mom from Reply 1997( and 1994) : she cooks a lot, to her being hungry is a crime ?
2. I loved Kim yoo mi's character in 'Heartless city'. I wish I grow up to be like her haha.
Thanks for this appreciation post, redfox. Can't wait for whatever you write about next week.

Kim Mi-Kyung - Court Lady Choi (Faith) was my first kdrama female +age love- fighting! And her role as a instructor and former rock band drummer in What's Up? - the best. Now as Healer computer hacker/conscience/advisor/director/protector/boss I love her.

Kim Mi-Kyung - I first saw her in the family drama Pure Nineteen, she was already an ahjumma in it then.

But the first drama I fully remembered her in was Daemang, where she was the loyal maidservant to Lee Yo Won the yangban's daughter. Their relationship was so sweet and tender to watch ❤

The mom in Kill Me Heal Me is fantastic. She is all the "murmur under her breath the martyrdom of being a wife and a mother" with such a dose of love and joy that she is just wonderful. It is nice to see a close family with adult children who all get along so well.

The family is so good and close and friendly that it makes me nervous. On the one hand, we have hero without loving family and so we can say "mental health issues are because of troubled childhood and not genetic." No family "or ig in" <-- sorry had to say that. But is there going to be a balance where we are shown that some mental issues happen without anyone to "blame." I figure brother can have his love because he knows it's not really his sister...but will there be another situation that shows there is mental health issues even in happy families?

you mean Oh Ri Jins´mom? yeah.
there is also Kim Na Woon in this drama I noticed - she played Min-kis´mom in School 2013 and she was great there. gotta see how she is in KMHM

redfox, I am glad you picked up a really good topic here (well, you always pick up good topic). I am a very long time k-drama watcher, and can tell most of Ahumma and Ahjussi's acting type, and some of them (well, including ones mentioned here) are just so fantastic.
The latest one I was in awe with her acting was (I don't know actress's name) MinJung's birth mother in 'JangBori is here'. Her Saturi and acting was just awesome, and I thought she deserved the award more than Bori, more than MinJung(Yi YooRi who got the top prize).

I loved it. I sobbed myself to sleep several times towards the end. It had me by the heart. This one set the bar really really high for bromance that rips into your soul.

And Lee Jung-jae. You know he as added at the last hour to pull in the female viewers.

Are you really recapping it? The whole thing?
Have you posted them already? I would love to watch alone and join in the convo.

I had threatened to do recap but could never get the courage up.

It is the 10th anniversary this year so this is good timing. EVERYONE should watch it, as painful as it is.

I didn't know Lee Jung-jae was added last minute for the ladies, but that was a brilliant move b/c I absolutely love him. At first I thought, oh no, not another gangster in love w/the boss' daughter, but by ep 4 (even though he wasn't in it much by them) I freaking loved him. The last minute thing also probably explains why he had so few lines, but his silence was the thing that I loved the most. He was amazing!

But yes, I am recapping the whole thing. I've actually finished (rough drafts) of the entire series, but I'm a newbie blogger so I am only posting two episodes a week until I get the hang of things. If you're inclined to watch along and you have some time, I'd love to add your comments to the recap posts if you'd like.

He had just finished Feelings in the fall of 94, and it since that was pretty popular, they put him in this handsome man role.

I think the writer said something like the most popular character ever to have nothing to do with the plot, but by golly, he was what kept me watching!!

0

"most popular character ever to have nothing to do with the plot" <-- LOL! That was well said.

I loved him too. He was really an impetus to keep watching b/c otherwise, it was a very heavy show. There was not much laughter or even romance even though both of the main characters "loved" Hye-rin. And that bromance was pretty epic and so tragic. Although "tragic" seems so trite of a word to use when we consider what happened in the end. It was a really good drama though.

I have a Valid Love thought to work out.

Il ri went from Andro, to Teacher's protector, to house painter waiting years for him to come back, to Teacher's wife and Hee-soo's caretaker. check.
Carpenter Kim comes along and shakes her tree.
(He really loved her peaches. ;D )
She falls out - not against her will despite what she says, because her WILL worked hard keeping him in her thoughts and talks with HS.

OK. So now we have a woman who has discovered that she has a will to...be happy. Be sad. Be smexy that doesn't actually have to do with anyone else.
She also finds her husband who has taken her for granted all those years, doesn't want her around once he sees she wants things other than him, and SHE realizesa he doesn't see her as she really is, but some vague blob of woman-person in my life.

But then he DOES want her around because, well, she keeps him warm at night and he doesn't want to buy a new blanket.

She's out of the tree and doesn't want to climb back onto another one, even if it looks like Lee Soo-hyuk.
Now she wonders what can be experienced on the ground?

She needs to sort out all the things and build her own treehouse,* too.

*I know a good carpenter she could use...

So not a lot of action in the past few eps, but I am OK with it now.

On the one hand, i think: Okay, the writer is doing a good job of showing how love and human nature and immaturity can all work together to mess up a good relationship. So i applaud writer for being "honest" about real life love.

I say, "well, she's trying to bring super progressive ideas such as it's okay to be divorced, don't judge divorcees yadda yadda, we all have a right to die, women have a right to their bodies if they don't want to have a child (and they don't have to tell their husbands), so yeah..she's stepping gingerly into feminism, liberal ideas.

But on the other hand I think, BULL! This woman writer does not have the courage of her convictions. Why create an adulteress who didn't commit adultery but who is vilified as if she had? Why create a character who "decides not to have a baby" and manages throughout 7 years to wow, not ever get pregnant? Why create a character who is "responsible for messing up her marriage" when she is given such over-the-top excuses we can't even forgive her because she really hasn't done anything? Ah, the selling of a victim!

And yet, i really like this drama...even if it's all so muddled.

And seriously, if this female character were a guy character

I dont see a problem in selling a character if the writer wnts to do so. isnt that the point of all stories

0

I agree that not actually committing adultery was kinda weaksauce. That way she gets to be divorced, but the audience doesn't see her as a sinner, so she becomes more palatable and sympathetic.

0

I don't mind selling a character but over-selling a character shows a distrust of he viewer/reader. Heck, we reeaders are always pretty primed to forgive the hero/heroine of any story simply because we're seeing the story through his/her POV. The writer should have trusted our kindness instead of overdoing the traits that would make us like her
a) oddball/eccentric/arty type
b) married her teacher
c) has convenient asthma
d) unskilled laborer
e) has paralyzed sis in law who collapsed on the very day she returned
f) alone at home with no one to talk to
8) did not have a chance to grow and have other relationships
9) did not actually commit adultery

We probably would've understood heroine without all the pile-on.

When a guy commits adultery in a kdrama, he isn't generally given all these silly excuses. Either it is true lust/ true love/ or a horrible wife. And when it comes to men the audience either thinks, "Idiot!" or "Thank God he's free from that horrible woman." And we either forgive him in the long run as we have with ahjussi father-in-law. Or we rail against him.

Here, the writer wanted to write about humans without blaming or vilifying anyone. She didn't give us a creepy hubby. She gave us a loving family. But she wanted to give us a marriage that failed and a temptation. She wanted, i think, to blame life. And to say whtever it is she wants to say. But she muddied her premise a bit much. So now we don't know what her theme is or what the character's issue is.

Was there always in this marriage a sorrow/secret eating away at it? Was it kinda doomed to unhappiness at the start? Heroine not telling hubby about why she didn't have a baby is a bit meh. Is heroine affirming her female right to her body? Is heroine shown as lying in her marriage to begin with? Is heroine psychologically guilt-ridden? And what is heroine learning now? Is she just generally growing up? Or is she learning that her husband never understood that Friend/husband/lover/Teacher were all the same to her and inseparable entities?

Is all this about life and love? Is all this leading to a theme where we say "let us take life as it comes and not overwhelm ourselves with foolish notions of forcing life/marriage/babies on to people"?? Is there a feminist or right-to-life thesis hidden in the heroine's "awakening"?

So for me.. a writer can sell a character but if it's about a valid theme, the writer has to prove her point to me without seeming careless?

Happy Friday Beanies!!

Too many new shows…along with too many of my friends having breakups….so I’m still behind on things. And I’m behind on Healer!! That’s my current favorite so that’s actually pretty upsetting. I will catch up by tomorrow night though with that. I just refuse to watch it at work because I want to see it on a big screen and not my dinky phone. Also there’s usually 600+ comments before subs are even out so I veer away from comment on that one now. But on to a few things I did see.

Heart to Heart: Caught up on this one! I always need about 4-5 episodes to really know how I’m feeling about a show but I’ll attempt this anyway. I think it’s cute, but I don’t know about the big picture. It has potential though. Definitely a Second Lead Syndrome going. He’s too perfect to be real but I don’t care – that’s why it’s on television. However, I also appreciate that I find nothing charming about the lead guy right now at all. Sometimes I think the cold chaebol are shown as jerks but also too charming at the same time. This one doesn’t even feel like they’re trying to make him likeable. I appreciate that. They’ll really have to win me over to get on board this ship though because he’s a giant jerk right now. I actually like the actress right now. Sure everyone in this is a bit OTT but it’s working for me. I can’t wait until her sassiness comes out into her every day world. And also a bit more in the grandmother disguise (but I hope that family doesn’t become and trope-y as it seems).

Kill Me, Heal Me: I’m behind. I’ve only seen the first two episodes. Like many I’m enjoying his bad boy alter personality a bit too much. I would not like him in real life but Ji Sung is clearly having so much fun with this part and he looks good in that getup so….more please! The chaebol thing is again rather overdone…and I am tired of the psychiatrists who are clearly so unprofessional. I know how they’re tying the two characters together but really why spend so much time in a professional setting without the smallest attempt to have her act realistic? I don’t mind her, I just think the character doesn’t work in that setting. She’d put every patient on edge. Mostly I’m just here for the many personalities. I hope it stays a bit wacky all the way through.

Seonam Girls: Well not much actually got resolved this episode but it’s nice that they’re aiming for a bigger story arc as well. I have a theory that the artist was in on the “Attack”. It makes sense that he’d ask for the camera bag when leaving if it was hiding something. Plus he said this show was for someone special and I got the feeling that he didn’t mean the pictures but the chaos and perhaps staged attack. Of course, I could very well be wrong. I also thought it was odd the brother could be so wrong about Mi Do. Hyeri looks nothing like her, even the photo shopped version.

And extra tidbits that didn't fit in the word count...

I wanted to watch the first "Persevere GHR" but the subs never got completed enough. Same with the latest Frost episode. This is probably a sign that I should not pick shows that are just on sites subbed by volunteers. Sigh. (The volunteers subbers are AMAZING so that's no complaints about them...just a comment on my complete inability to have patience these days.)

Spy - I need to get to this. I mean to but there were just too many shows! Without giving anything away....is it worth it? Good start?

Pinocchio - Oops, still stuck on episode 15! I need to get a move on. And I heard Lee Joon was making a cameo! I'm so sad about MBLAQ but I'm glad he's going to get to focus on his acting.

Imitiation Game - Yep, not Korean. Kind of hard for me to critique without spoilers. I'll just say that I enjoyed it but I have some issues with the flow, especially with the end. But there are some really good performances and I found all the war time stuff really interesting even when I knew what most of this was about.

I'm still peeved about Jang Geun Seok no longer being on the show and actually being cut out from the scenes that were shot. It seems like such an odd overblown reaction. I'm also more and more concerned that he's going to have military time at the lowest point in his career. I'm actually not a huge JGS fan (my friend who introduced me to kdramas is though), but I have enjoyed his stuff and he's worked hard at this since he was a child....and I think the public should give him a break. Along with a nice juicy role.

You have to watch Spy!
Its up in the tops of my ranks at the moment together with KMHM.
You dont have to worry about it being another doctor stranger (cross fingers since its still a lil too early), and I think i am beginning to appreciate shows that do not center on romance! (e.g. Misaeng, Punch, Spy) The mom-son r/s in Spy is what keeps me going!

I'm really fortunate to have actually skipped Doctor Stranger altogether. So many people bring up that show with anger and bitterness lol. I think I might try to watch Spy today after I catch up with KMHM. I too am enjoying having shows with little to no romance (perhaps started for me with Bad Guys). The dynamics in Spy sound fun...and as redfix pointed out, there needs to be more ahjumma appreciation both from fans and by writers.

in KMHM I was so disturbed by the doctors abandoning work to go spy and gossip on the door. WTF? what if your patients die? I guess the hospital only has Miss Husky as the patient

but those are little things that disturb me. this drama has a vibe of old style camp / cult series, it somehow feels so retro, but I love that.
except they blew their budjet with the explosions in ep 3 and now it is just stand / sit and talk + lots of PPL to compensate. in ep 4 they are on the phone ALL THE TIME. sponsor suck-up.
but still, steo up the game I am still on the train

Yeah, the gossip, the jokes, the screaming....and they're in psych? They need to be the most aware of how their actions impact their patients.

Ok, so since I know I’m going to babble and this will be loaded with spoilers (although it’s all aired so it should be obvious I’m talking about the whole show), I’m devoting this whole post to:

PRIDE & PREJUDICE

I actually caught up with this show last week and this week got to finish on time!! I have a lot of thoughts in my head rattling around that I’ll try to put together in a coherent fashion. I’m not totally enamored of this show even though there was some great acting and several really good episodes. The extension did them no favors and there were far too many flashbacks which I think took away from some of the tension and pacing. I also think the random 3 year bit was way too tacked on. I personally don’t enjoy courtroom shows so I was bummed that that’s how it ended (although I suppose I can’t be too surprised) but I felt it was much more exciting leading up to the end. And I’m ok with the end but I wish they’d somehow done it differently. It felt a bit anticlimactic.

I also am ok with a sort of ambiguous ending and I know that they were making some social commentary on the state of things right now in Korea (emphasized by Choi Min Soo himself when he declined his award). It makes sense that even in their victory there’s still an overhanging cloud. But I still think the execution in the end was lacking. I also really really wished some moments had happened that didn’t happen. Like Kang Soo having any interaction with Lawyer Jeong after he wakes up. I mean the moment when he visit and is saying that he’s going to try not to hate him was really nice…but then he wakes up and they’re in the same court room etc. and there’s nothing. And the lawyer is completely acting dumb so that the company will keep to their promise to not hurt Kang Soo. Sigh. Oh and I also liked that the mom told Kang Soo to let go of Han Byul now. It was sweet.

I think the romance (and partial love triangle at the beginning) was so completely unnecessary. In fact the flashbacks made me realize how much the setup felt like a completely different kind of show. I’m actually glad it changed tone, but the episodes in the middle were the best and after that it started to get muddled. I really wish there had been a discussion group on here even if there were no recaps because !!! Ahem. But I did like a lot of the acting. I still stick by my comment last week that in the beginning the Chief Moon scenes just felt like he dominated everything and it was a bit too intense. But then the show upped its intensity and then he felt perfect. Heck, even the eye candy acted well!

I know I had more thoughts but my brain is still waking up. I’d love to hear any and all thoughts on this show.

OMG FINALLY A PRIDE AND PREJUDICE COMMENT -

Granted, I'm on the Healer bandwagon as well but I need to talk about Pride and Prejudice since DB didn't do recaps and the soompi forum didn't provide me with the crack I need for this drama. Considering that it's a heavy drama I felt like I was brought around in circles and was with the characters when they started discovering clues to uncover the culprit. The ending was very abrupt, it felt like the writer might have just given up..?

The acting was perfect, I felt like giving a standing ovation to Choi Min Soo for being such a perfect perfect Chief Moon. He is so human, trying to do the right thing but circumstances occur and sometimes you've gotta make a choice even if the choice could lead to ... you know *no spoilers* something morbid.

Choi Jin Hyuk was stellar... This is a good goodbye drama before he leaves for the mandatory military service. I will miss him so so much.

I feel like the writer did not do Baek Jin Hee justice, in the end it felt like she was at the sidelines.. Although there were a few episodes where she played a pivotal role into uncovering the whole case.

Choi (so many Chois!!) Woo Shik has IMPECCABLE comic timing. He was SUCH a joy to watch!

Anyway, I agree with you about the romance being unnecessary, there was little to no interaction between Jinhee and Jinhyuk, it felt like they could have just been colleagues and the drama will still work fine!

The whole Park Man Geun story arc was a bit far fetched. Like, I was expecting a totally different person but when it was that guy... It felt like I went on this amazing rollercoaster only to land badly? Nevertheless, I must applaud the writer for writing this whole case, with 4 - 5 different cases intertwining with each other. That was ingenious tbh.

I'm kind of sad it's over... But I'm glad there's Healer to uhmm.. 'heal' me. HEHEHEHE

I watched P&P till the end and I still have some questions left.

1. Why was it necessary to try to kill Kang Soo? Okay, he witnessed the accident, so what? Even if he could have caused problems, those were problems for chief Moon and that lawyer. Why did the secret organization get involved?

2. What happened to Han Byul? I know Panda took both boys and stuffed them in his car, then went to the factory. Then Kang Soo escaped and Panda was killed, and it happened during the day. So did Han Byul stay in the car? How come he was sitting in that warehouse, apparently "dying" in the evening? What happened to him in the meantime and why didn't he run away?

3. Who was that guy in chief Moon's car at the end?

Not to mention: Why did they want to kill Dong-Chi at the beginning?

I am convinced that the writer had a nervous breakdown in the middle of the show and they just kept going without a script. I still have no idea what happened.

And the romance was not good enough to cover the plot problems.

1. This is the hardest one for me to answer because most of this was at the beginning and I forget. They'd just gotten the information on some giant case and they wouldn't have made it in time if he'd stopped and been arrested...and it's possible the whole thing could have been thrown our. Whatever that thing was that the special prosecution department dud changed the shift if power at the top, and to keep it in th new form, the company needed I make sure none of it was questioned. I think the original plan was not to kill Kang Soo but just hide him until the treat had passed. But our main villain personally decided to take it one step farther....and then he was to high up and important so the company covered for him.

2. They told panda to kill the kid and kang soo says panda went and smothered him with a blanket until you couldn't hear him cry any more. So I think he was mostly dead and left behind where our villain checked to see if he'd make it or not. And then....spontaneous fire? Lol. So probably technically died from smoke inhalation in the end.

3. The guy at the end was I'm sure just another hired hand by our main company.

1. That lawyer (Chang Gi) was a whistleblower lawyer for his company. Moon was a part of investigation team which was looking into that company. On the night of the accident, both of them were racing against time to get some incriminating documents which would seal the case. If the hit-and-run had come to light, Chang Gi's credibility would be hurt and the case would be shot open. Hence the need to cover it up. So Kang Soo as the sole witness had to die.

2. I imagine Kang Soo ran out of the car, then White Bear (Panda was the drug dealer from earlier episodes) turned attention to Hyan byul and suffocated him with a blanket. Imagining him to be dead, he switched back to Kang soo, and tried to drown him. This is where Dong chi rescued him, and lost his consciousness. All this time Hyan byul was left in that factory half dead. That is how Choi found him in evening, and he just let him be assuming the cold winter night or the fire would kill that child. I skipped out on Dong Chi's father because even I don't know how he fits into the story.

3. That guy was one of Hwa young foundation's lackeys. He was the one holding Yeol Moo's disciplinary hearing. The point was to show that Hwa Young has their tentacles everywhere.

I'll post here with all the others:

Prosecutors Prosecuting Prosecutors: *spoiler* Final thoughts: I absolutely love Chief Moon, he stole the show. His is an underappreciated master at his profession in a politically thankless position. His voice and demeanor were persuasive and portrayed more than just the words he spoke. The trial was a circus of sorts with everyone involved in the crime 15 years ago either on the witness stand or lawyer-ing, or both, something that has been pointed out all along as too small a gene pool even for a kdrama. I came to sympathize with the mother and understood how she could be stuck with the pain of losing a child and with so many unanswered questions went off the deep end. Her words to Kang Soo, “Let go of Han Byul now. You’ll wear yourself out carrying that heavy burden,” was quite a big step. The romance fizzle was disappointing – although how breathtakingly handsome was Dong Chi in the “3 years later” blip at the end - gah! Other loose ends left untied – I thought the storyline of Kang Soo and the boy who stopped talking after his sister was killed would be more complete. Also, Kang Soo’s mother’s death was glossed over, and the side crimes to the major crime unnecessarily cluttered the story. Actually, a lot about Kang Soo was left incomplete, and other than testifying, his story fell by the wayside. I liked Yeol Moo, but I thought she could have developed a bit of sparkle as the weighty matters in her life were resolved. In my mind, I pictured Dong Chi and his father swaggering out of the courtroom arms over shoulders singing, “I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy.” In the end, justice was served the kdrama way.

Hi beanies! Happy friday, how are you all? btw does anyone know what happened to Christmas? I need a holiday holiday please...

So much to read so little time. I miss drama watching!! Especially with healer and pinochio (which i somehow managed to get up to date on the recaps for) both which seems so much better than anticipated. And all the new dramas... *sad face*

On the other hand i have had my MA dissertation idea deemed possible, which is something!

One question: when do you read recaps?
As someone who is not a spoilerphobe i sometimes read recaps when i have no time to do drama watching/as procrastination. This means that there are some times where i have "read" dramas instead of watching them. Anyone else have this experience at times?

I actually only do it with dramas that I'm watching. I did it with Personal Taste and am doing it with Emergency Couple. It helps get me through the parts where I just go a little crazy with what's currently happening in the drama.

Yeah, I've used recaps as ways to help understand what is happening at times. Or when I want to be able to skips things because I cannot watch what's happening.

It's just interesting to see how other people use recaps :)

Hi @Manin how are you?

yes I had the same experience when I can't wait for the subs so I read the recaps and I spoil it for myself because if I knew what will happen during a particular episode I will not watch the episode normally , I'll just skip lots of stuff and look for the clips which I find it appealing more to me .

also, because I study in college I can't find time to watch dramas, so I read recaps during breaks or in the bus while going from/to the college

"ll just skip lots of stuff and look for the clips which I find it appealing more to me" <-- haha yes this happenes for me too! Or I just wait in anticipation for a scene to come up.

Yes, college does cut down drama watching. Warning: thinking "I'll just read one recap as a study break. It'll be fine, it takes shorter time than watching the episode" is not as time saving as you'd think ;) That's my own experience :p

Especially for dissertation times! :P

I often do that with the first episodes of dramas that I'm not sure whether to watch or not. Wait to see f the recap of the first episode will make me want to watch it, or not.

Would you do the same with dramas where you drop it for some reason? continue with the recaps I mean

I definitely "read" dramas instead of watching them. There are times when I have no interest in watching a drama but really want to know what happens so I'll read the recaps instead.

Then there are times when I am watching a drama and decide to drop it but I will continue to read the recaps, if they are available. With My Lovely Girl for example, I made it up to Episode 9 or 10 and just couldn't take it anymore. It was sooo boring that I just read the recaps instead and watched the final episode. I really really love RAIN, but I just couldn't sit through it anymore.

Sometimes I read recaps to decide if I want to watch a drama. I don't mind spoilers and recaps can only provide so much information so I embrace them!!

Hi! Great to see you! ..... I know that when you're in school, it just takes over. But what are you going to do, right? School's always a good thing, so it's ok. ..... I hope a holiday comes soon for you!

That's great news on your dissertation idea! Yay! ..... Getting an idea approved can often be a headache so it's always positive when you don't run into any obstacles.

Regarding your question, for me it kind of varies. Sometimes I read them when I missed a detail or I'm unsure if I understood something correctly. ..... Sometimes I read them when I watched something that had no subtitles (yes, that has been known to happen!). ..... Sometimes I read them to more clearly understand a cultural detail. ..... I often read them, simply because they're so well written and fantastic. ..... And I'll certainly read them when I'm watching a KBS drama, because on tv here, in order to fit in the commercials and end the drama in the allotted time, they cut out entire scenes. If it weren't for the wonderful recaps, I would have no idea that certain things happened or were said.

Take care and have a great day!

Yes, I still would need to get the official approval and stuff. And the professor told me to shift my focus a bit from the Viking sagas and onto the Viking poetry instead. But he said that I should be able to find stuff and gave me some books to look up as a starting point. Which makes me happy.

Oh KBS cutting scenes would be annoying... I think I saw someone commenting about that before.
I also find recaps to be helpfull for shows where you get very bad subs, as well as for those that are not subbed or only partially subbed. It's very nice to have the recaps to rely on then.

And dramabeans have some very well written recaps as you say. I've read some very bad recaps before, which made me appreciate the db crew even more.

I totally agree with reading recaps purely because so many of them are written so well and include little snippets of commentary from the recappers that are on point, insightful, and often just plain funny.

I read recaps only of shows I've watched, and they always give me a better understanding of the show.

I haven't read in advance for currently airing shows. I like going along for the ride. However, I have read ahead on some completed past shows...but only when I get a little stuck. Generally if I feel something bad or that I don't like is going to happen then I'll read ahead. It somehow calms me down and reassures me that it least there is good stuf afterwards even if my guess is right. Does that make any sense? My drama habits are a little kooky.

Interesting question. It was while I was reading the ' Healer' episode 2 recap, that I felt a sudden interest in watching the episode. Which then turned into a crazy obsession. I have watched all the episodes around 5 times and watch at least one favorite scene from any episode every day. I was happy to read all the gapdong recaps and never felt like watching any of the episodes. So it depends, I guess. ☺

Hi Manin!

My reasoning for reading recaps:
1) If the subs were slow, I read slowly while watching the show.
2) If the subs were out, I'd watch the show, then read the recaps to check out any nuances I might have missed, especially when the recap is done by a native and can let me in on any subtle jokes / word plays / or accents (such as satoori)

My reasoning for creating recaps:
1) I started out by choosing shows no one else was recapping (the first being When A Man Loves, two years ago). My current SK dramas I'm recapping are old: Winter Sonata(recently completing episode 12); and Baby Faced Beauty (which is on hiatus until WS is completed).

2) I'm now working on Thai productions for similar reasons. I like the idea of a casual reader liking my description so much that they will search out and watch the show. That way deserving shows get more love! :-)

Which reminds me... I'm so behind (both on watching and reading) on that Thai drama you recapped with the marriage contract with the prince and the body guard which falls in love with her (and he better get the girl cause he is so awesome..)

I cannot remember what it's called. And sorry for a very bad description.

Ahhh, WAML. Those were the days.

I don't often read recaps anymore, but I used to read them for shows I was watching to see if my take on a character's emotions or motivation was on target, since in the early days I did have a hard time understanding these things, even with subs. I also read them to get the extra info, like Shuk says.

I WILL still check in on recaps for shows I drop because even if I don't want to watch the crazy anymore, I want to know how it ends.

Writing them is mostly so I can say what I want how I want in a place where people are reading it because they specifically sought it out, not taking up room elsewhere or hogging a conversation. I haven't felt like saying a whole lot lately, though.

I haven't written recaps yet, but I feel they might happen if I'm super into a show.

Sometimes, I write about what's happening in a show in my own journal because something or other is bothering me and I want to figure out what button is being pushed. But, since that's personal, I'm not putting that up.

Actually, scratch that first thought, because once my ultimate bias, Block B's Jaehyo, gets cast into a drama or variety show, no matter who stupid it is, or how much it makes me cringe, or throw up or whatever, I plan to recap it.

However, since my bias is notoriously underpromoted, I guess I won't be recapping anything any time soon!

Hm yes I have been wanting to do a "drama analysis dictionary style" for a while. Inspired by my many dictionary searches and hate for latin. But knowing me I'd probably never get around to actually do it, never mind putting it up.

I fail as a fan girl too. Example: I've been a Dr. Who fan since the 70s, even been to a bunch of conventions etc... But can I name who the companions are or which episode is which and with whom? Nope. I just enjoy. It is how I approach watching Kdramas. I watch for the enjoyment and reading the recaps add to that enjoyment in giving me a better understanding.
Does anybody do this, watch the show raw to actually look and see the acting and what is being played out and then go back and watch it with subs because one is just reading and not able to "watch" the show?

0

I read dramas I don't want to watch but am curious about (Heart to Heart but I like it now), those that I don't have time to watch but want to (sadly this might be Punch soon since I fell behind), those I dropped out of irritation but want to know what happens (did that with IOIL). When I first discovered Dramabeans a few months into my kdrama discovery I read almost everything up here I was that obsessed so shows I missed. I'm more selective now but I also read recaps of the shows I am watching to squee or vent or just to have a richer watching experience, especially if I watch with partial subs and dont have enough time to watch when they're completed.

I stopped in the middle of episode...somewhere b/t 11-13 and googled something akin to "what episode does the prince find out dat hoe is a lying liar who lies in rooftop prince?" and fell upon Dramabeans. Never even knew such things as recaps existed before then but it was so funny and informative I didn't end up going back to the episode that happened, I sat on the pc for hours just reading. I got to skip all the silliness and didn't pick it back up till the last episode. Never looked back. I will always have fond memories of The Man Who Couldn't Murder. Poor Tae-mu. Oh, it really depends on the drama. There are some dramas that I get SERIOUS about. Meaning, I love and am so invested in them that I simply can't even glance at the recap before seeing the episode.

There are other dramas that maybe I really like parts of, but I get nervous about where the show is heading so I put it aside and check in with the blurbs at the top and maybe with some of the commentary at the end to see whether it's worth continuing. Even if I do continue it, it's most likely the type of show that I don't mind getting spoiled a bit for, even if a do like it. In those cases, I don't spoil myself too much though.

I am a spoilerphobe...until I meet the perfect drama. *cough*Healer*cough*

So I have to watch the episode completely subbed before I come to DB to read the recaps and comments. And I don't watch previews, they're are the biggest spoiler.

Perfect drama draws me in and I can't let it go and wait for the next episode...
Answer Me 1997 wasn't really popular among subbers in its early episodes, so I had no choice but to watch it raw accompanied with DB's recaps.

0

Required fields are marked *

Hi @ Manin, I'll read recaps for dramas that I have a slight interest in but don't intend to watch for myself - it helps to save me time this way, and I'll watch the interesting parts if I feel like it. Or else after some time has lapsed after I have watched the drama - 3 Musketeers is an example.

From experience I realised that my drama watching experience is diluted if I read recaps for the episode straightaway after watching it. What fills my head then will not be my own feels and thoughts from watching the episode and scenes, but those of other commenters'. Tree with Deep Roots is a good drama but it was ruined that way for me, sorry to say.

So my lesson learned is that the drama experience absorption comes first, then the retrospective sharing of the drama with others.

"So my lesson learned is that the drama experience absorption comes first, then the retrospective sharing of the drama with others"

That is a point. though sometimesii would read it straight after because I think "I want to know this person reaction to this scene". Though that tends to be more for later episodes when the mood has been sorta established. (one exacmple being the flashing scene in witch's romance)

Why I read recaps

1) I first began reading recaps when I couldn't find subbed episodes of old shows online and stumbled upon Dramabeans. I have not stopped since. There's just this sense of community here on dramabeans so you don't feel that you are watching a show alone. What's more, I love reading the insightful comments and discussion here. As teacher of literature I love the character and plot analysis and whatever analysis that goes on here though I'm more of a lurker who usually has no time to comment.

2) I read recaps (1st two ep) to determine if a show is worth watching, especially when I have no time to watch. Like Right Now. TT

3) I can't help myself. I want to know what happens since the sub is not out yet or even if the sub is out but I simply have no time to watch the show yet. I don't really mind spoilers so it doesn't really matter to me.

4) I drop a show and wants to know what happens in the end.

5) I have no time to watch a show yet want to know what is going on. For example, I read 'I Can Hear Your Voice' instead of watching it.

Heartbroken that Pinocchio is over. I seriously had zero expectations for this drama and it was just so good. I'm debating on whether or not I will watch the one taking over the slot.

Watching Emergency Couple as well because I just can't get enough of YGN News' Cap. It's pleasant but nothing earth-shaking.

Sadly this weekend will be free of dramas because my sister and I are participating in a sci-fi movie marathon. It'll be fun, but not dramas will make me crazy.

yeah Pinocchio is over, the story could have been done in a number of ways, but this is how it went this time. Maybe it could get a Thai / taiwan remake and do it a little differentlY? I would liek it if the other paths had been explored...

Lee Jong Seuk is carrying his roles like a pro by now, he seemed a little stiff and shaky in the beginning of his road, but now he really carries the scenes. And together with Park Shin Hye they made a surprisingly good match. wow.

Both Moms - Kim Hae-Sook and Jin Kyung - did a great job!

I would like to see Kim Hae Sook and Kim Sang Joon together in some drama where they would both be baddies who become reluctant partners on some mission but not holding back on any means to get to the goal. It would be chilling. maybe I´d get a heart attack though...

Jin Kyung seriously impressed me. I loved her character in "It's Okay, It's Love." She was such a caring mentor to Gong Hyo-Jin's character that I was shocked to see her being so callous in Pinocchio. I'm keeping an eye out for her in the future. As for Kim Hae-Sook, I am going to seek out her past work because she was SO good.

@redfox: I second your suggestion of having Kim Hae-sook and Kim Sang-joong pairing up together for a drama as badasses...because they would be so awesome!! :)
And I agree about Lee Jong-suk and Park Shin-hye. I mean, who knew she would be suitable for the In-ha role...much less have such cute chemistry with LJS? I suppose I had low expectations of her due to her past works, but dude...she brought spunky In-ha to life.

@iheartbusterk: If you can't get enough of Cap Hwang (Lee Pil-mo is awesome!), I would suggest catching him in two dramas -- The Sons of Sol Pharmacy and Golden Era of Daughter-in-law. The latter is where I first became a fan, the former where I loved him even more!

I even watched Lights & Shadows to see his villain through! (I wouldn't suggest that though...unless you like watching period dramas, it's the 60s/70s I believe).
I'm not sure where both are available though.

One of my kdrama regulars, NewKDramaAddict, watched and recco'd "Thermae Romae", which I thought was hysterical. It's touted as Sci-fi, but what it really is, is a comedy.
It's a Japanese movie about a Roman hot bath architect who time 'flows' between ancient Rome and modern-day onsens to find inspiration for new ideas.

The ideas included: shower hoses, shower caps, aquariums, sluice buckets, scrubby washclothes, bubbles jacuzzi-style....

This just started happening about two weeks ago, and I haven't been able to find a way to bypass them. I'm fine with regular-length ads, since I know they pay for the content, but when the commercials become longer than the show I'm trying to watch it's no longer worth it. Oh ok. I've seen the "skip this ad" on YouTube, but I swear I've never seen it on Viki. I will certainly look for it next time. Thanks.

And you can't skip it? o.o

I have a viki pass, but when I didn't, I sometimes had long ads that played for about 5 (or was it 10?) seconds and then I could skip them..

On a computer yes....they've gotten ridiculous. Or I get five ads back to back...and they end up all being the same ad.

Watching on my phone is different though. Shorter and fewer ads. So I tend to Viki at work lol.

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are all doing well today.

Watched this week:

Healer - I'm sooooo into this one, you can't even imagine it. Then again, recaps are garnering 1900+ comments, so I'm not the only one, right? Heh. ....... Seriously, the only thing stopping me from proclaiming this my favorite of the year is knowing that 2015 has just started and we still have many, many more dramas coming up and the fact that I'm not even half way through this one! ....... But what can I say? It's simply excellent. ....... Ji Chang-wook! So I remember seeing him for the first time a couple of years ago in K. Will's video for his song, "I Need You." ....... Who knew back then that the guy featured in that music video would go on to impress as the Healer. ....... The Healer role is simply fitting Ji Chang-wook very, very well.

Secret Door - Finally finished this! ....... I may be in the minority, but I really liked it. ....... Sure, I'll never know if the events that were shown really happened that way in real life or not, but it did present a plausible option.

Mr. Baek - So it's slapstick-y at times ....... but sometimes, at the end of the day, you just want to be distracted by some mindless fun.

Pride & Prejudice - Watching bits and pieces only.

Downton Abbey - Ok, so I'm going to just say it. Edith kind of bugs me. ....... And I know that my dislike of her stems from the fact that I've never really forgotten nor forgiven her for what she did to Mary in Season 1.

That's about it for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

Re: Edith in Downton Abbey

I get that what Edith did with Mary was really, really bad. She shouldn't have done it, if only to protect herself because Mary's indiscretion still would've reflected badly on her. That said, it's clear in the 5 seasons that we have and reading between the lines about life before the show began, Edith was seriously unloved. Mary was the prickly beautiful one and it's clear that her parents doted on her. Sybil was the sweetheart who had the sort of personality that ingratiates her with everyone. Edith is looked at as spinster-in-training when there are plenty of men to be had pre-war. And in the intervening seasons, she's matured a great deal, way more so than Mary who has become nothing more than a Mean Girl. I'm pretty sure if you talk to Edith, she'd tell you that she seriously regrets doing it.

Sorry, Edith is probably my favorite of the Crawley sisters, especially since we never got to see how much Sybil would develop.

I agree with everything iheartbusterk said and there is something else. When she did it, wasn't it after Mary had created a misunderstanding between her and a suitor? Not that is a good reason, I thought Edith was stupid to do something so dangerous and cruel but she was still very resentful of Mary when the series started.

Mary creates the rumor with Anthony Strallan after the letter is dispatched. Given what we've seen with Edith and her potential for marriage, I'd almost argue that Mary fully paid back Edith for writing that letter.

Yes I do not like Mary...at all.

Heh! Not at all! :)

iheartbusterk -

I certainly agree that Edith was the unloved and/or dare I say, forgotten daughter. Clearly, all attention was directed towards the other two sisters.

While I do want to believe that, if asked, she would express regret over what she did. Something about her just makes me a bit unsure about that sentiment. Then again, perhaps I'm just a harsh critic and I simply don't forgive that easily.

Marriage, Not Dating was by far my favorite of 2014 so I can't really suggest anything quite as good as that from that year. Maybe I'll suggest Dal Ja's Spring? Certain aspects about the beginning remind me of MnD, despite the fact that the shows are very, very different. Both of them are favorites of mine though :)

Rom-com recs...

Queen In-hyun's Man
Can We Get Married (also featuring Han Groo btw!)
Surplus Princess (up to episode 9 that is)
Coffee Prince
(most Hong sisters dramas, including their most recent, Master's Sun - it has its flaws but So Ji-sub and Gong Hyo-jin are a must-watch)

and I guess Answer Me 1997 is a romcom too, it's one of my favourites.

Yay, another fan for Marriage Not Dating! It really was laugh-out-loud funny, and that's saying a lot coming from me, since I don't really find comedies all that funny. It was helped by an upbeat soundtrack, too, and great acting all round..

I agree with pogo: Answer Me 1997 would be great if you haven't watched it yet!

Even though I Hear Your Voice isn't strictly a rom-com, I found it both romantic and funny, too.

Caught up on Healer (which I hadn't watched before).

So, my conclusion is that it's basically City Hunter 2. I find Ji Chang-wook to be a better actor than Lee Min-ho, his transitions between different 'characters' is spot on and also I find his character more appealing as it feels more human than LMH's ever did.

Other than that I'm finding Healer entertaining but not quite so amazing as you all seem to?

There's just things that I don't quite buy and characters that I wish were a little more interesting at times. Like Young-shin, she's harmless and I don't mind her, but she's like so many other k-drama heroines and I know once the drama is over, that makes her totally forgettable. Bit too many connections between everyone (Mung-hoo's boss really didn't need to be his ex that's putting her life on hold for him. I cringed at their conversation. Also because it felt like the writers needed to make her the ex b/c to make certain things of the story happen more easily. Still have a feeling that her knowing the passcode for his place is going to be used at some point – b/c this drama is predictable like that. See two pills, YS's broken phone left in the clothes, etc.)

I'll continue watching, because overall it's enjoyable... but mostly I'm still longing for another Misaeng (rewatched three episodes of that, and loved them as much as the first time round).

I did like Healer telling Mung-hoo, "Leave us all. Go and play your own game, we'll go an play ours." That's basically what I want to say to characters in half of all k-dramas!

Ikr some times, I find it so difficult to believe that the same guy who looks so serious as healer can do the careless student act so well. And be awkward Park bong soo in the next scene. It's amazing. Also, his facial expressions are spot on. In episode 12, when myung hee enters the room, he looks cautious and the various emotions that cross his face in that scene - he acts it out so well.
I love love love the hacker ahjumma too. She's so funny, I look forward to her comments each episode.

Yes, his acting feels very natural to me – like he's 100% that other character (as if he were in a different drama or something!) It's effortless – you don't see that with many actors.

And yet, at the same time, in the most recent episodes you see his Jung-hoo character starting to change: like he's not the perfect Healer, but experiencing certain feelings when he should be covering up (i.e. his different persona starting to 'overlap' slightly). Which however shows again how good his acting is (not sure if I'm explaining myself well – basically, I think he's very, very good).

Agreed. :) I've seen Jung-hoo acting more insecure either. I loved the scene in which he was still very young and being trained by Teacher, he seemed very similar to Park Bong-Soo, it's like PBS is just a former self of JH.

I adore Healer a lot - Ji Chang wook and the OTP make the show a LOT better than it actually is. He's swoon-worthy (there's nothing not to love about the guy actually) and he makes us believe the emotion Seo Jung-joo/Healer/Park Bong-soo are experiencing. He is a wonderful actor.

Recently there has been a dearth of a cracktastic OTP to root for... which Healer is filling the void. Hence, the hullabaloo on the forums especially with the international fans.

I find the shows very similar too but everything has been better on Healer from ep 1 for me. The story has holes, I agree, but CH’s story was beyond silly in my opinion, it was fun but preposterous, Bad Daddy was very corny and the characters didn’t feel realistic for me like everyone in Healer does.

I think Young-Shin is a bit better then the average heroine, yes, she has a traumatic past and is overly cheerful and caring but I like that she is also ambitious and has a good sense of humor. Women usually don’t have much sense of humor in kdramas. :)

Required fields are marked *

I agree this is 'more' realistic (in a way)... but sometimes I feel the writers take the easy way out/try too hard, which bothers me, e.g. having Mung-hoo's boss be the ex b/c it was a convenient way for her (unknowingly) to pass on some info to Moon-shik.

I want to like Young-shin better, but I just find her "cute", "clumsy" yet "gutsy" – and still too much in need of rescuing. We get that in too many kdramas and she doesn't feel significantly different to me. Some of her characterisation feels lazy (she cuts herself when opening cans. That's supposed to make her a little quirky yet yet... but, sorry, not buying. I've met people who struggle to open cans, but none that repeatedly cut themselves.)

I like how "touchy" Young-shin is though (unlike the average k-heroine that faints when you so much as brush against her arm).

You know, I always try to understand what people mean when they say someone is "too much in need of rescuing". Young-shin's wrapped up in things that she doesn't even, herself, know about and is just going about her life as a reporter. It certainly isn't a normal part of life to expect situations where you'll need to know how to defend yourself against someone trying to kill you, let alone a bunch of thugs or an elevator suddenly plummeting to the ground.

But she's dealing with these experiences much more than the average person, given the nature of the plot, so obviously she's going to be rescued more often if the situation in question is beyond her capabilities. This is where I'd take more issue with the plot than her because the show is putting her in a lot of these situations. But because a big part of the show is her being in danger, it can't be helped.

If it's about her getting over her trauma and not cowering in fear, this I completely understand. I definitely want to see her working through those issues so that she doesn't have to have the types of reactions she did at the end of episode 4 and 5. But I still think the drama shows her not letting her trauma get in the way of at least facing her fears bravely, even if they end up being too much for her to handle and even if, in the end, she does need help to survive.

I guess, in the end, what I'm trying to say is that this may be an action drama to us, but Young-shin's just going about her life like an average girl (unlike City Hunter) so I don't really need her to be taking on thugs all by herself because I sure as hell know that I couldn't do that, even with all the martial arts training I've had.

Too much in need of rescuing... I'm not expecting her to beat up thugs or anything of that sort, it's rather... can we have female Healer for once? And the guy being the sweet, clumsy but supposedly gutsy one that gets saved behind his back? It's always genius hero that go out to save the heroine (who needs saving because she's just an average person).

0

Oh, totally! I want that too. I just wrote that the other day, in fact, on a comment lost somewhere in one of the recaps. I definitely want to see a female Healer. And that's why I do actually lament that the plot, in that respect, does put the heroine at an automatic disadvantage when she can't ever be the one doing the saving. AND then you add that people are out to get her. My greatest concern for the show is that they may rely too much on the 'him saving her' scenario. But it's not something that I think should be held against the individual character.

In the end, if I enjoy the prospect of the girl being the one to save the guy, then should I not enjoy the story where it's the guy saving the girl? I don't think so. To me, that just feels backwards.

But, actually, have you checked out Spy? You might like that!

0

@Chandler

I am enjoying the story... it just doesn't feel totally fresh. It's just that it seemed for five or six weeks everyone was raving about how amazing amazing amazing this show is, so my expectations were that it would be something quite different from the norm but when I started watching it, as I said, it felt like City Hunter 2 (I agree there are some differences and I do feel this drama is more humane/human which I like better but there are still clear parallels btw them) and a female lead of a type we see a lot (even if among that 'type' she may be one of the better ones). So, I think it's good but not out of this world and sometimes my suspension of disbelief struggles a little...

0

I agree. Healer is City Hunter 2 with a better actor at the lead. Kim Nana looks like a Mensa genius in front of Chae Young Shin. Yes she was a crappy bodyguard but she was not dumb. She figured out who City Hunter was completely on her own.. even his mom. She pushed him to make the right choices and held him back from making the wrong ones.

What has Chae Young Shin done? Ignored her very serious medical condition to go cavort in danger. If you know you have a problem with violence, will you knowingly choose a profession that puts you in that situation? What if Park Bong Soo was not Healer in disguise saving her at each turn? I would have liked her more without that stupid breathing ailment... have they put it in there just so that hero can give her CPR?

The whole Lois falling in love with Superman trope doesn't port well to this storyline. Lois did not have childhood trauma. Superman was an established hero. And most importantly, she knew what Superman looks like! How can you be so reckless as to ask a faceless stranger out on a date? One who has been accused by cops of double murder!? OK so he rescued you. But he was paid for it. And then he kissed you. I would be super creeped out by that. What if Teacher was the Healer who rescued you? How would you feel about the kiss then??

And you are a reporter for god's sake! Do you have no curiosity? It would have been better if they had shown that she was intrigued with Healer rather than in love with him. Her efforts to clear his name is what would make Bong Soo fall for her, since it would be the first time someone cared for him.
How many hand holds and hugs is it going to take for her to make the connection? Nana just had to look at half of his face once.

Uh, many journalists don't tend to see many scenes of violence-in-action on-the-job, unless they choose to go to war/conflict zones. Many times, in functional, normal cities, they're at the "scene of the crime" after the crime is done and all that's left of violence are its effects and YoungShin is not traumatized by the effects of violence - more like by on-going violence.

0

Ah well, I just disagree in so many ways.

I far prefer Chae Young-shin to Kim Nana actually.
In my opinion, from her perspective, there haven't been many hints that clearly say "Park Bong-soo is Healer" except for the handhold that literally just happened. This is because I think our hero is doing a pretty good job of seeming like a different person AND because, really, people don't go around, looking at people around them and saying, "this person isn't who they say they are!". They just don't. You wouldn't. Because it doesn't happen. WE know that in this drama's world it can happen...because it is. But for her to jump to that conclusion would make no sense to me.

I have also always thought that Chae Young-shin has seen enough of Healer's profile and enough of him in that photo, to at least deduce that he's a young, good-looking guy, even if she can't see his face completely. There's also been enough to their interactions for a crush to form in my opinion and I actually dig the fact that he isn't an established hero that's 'easy' to crush on.

Obviously, I do get some of what you're saying, but there was a point when Chae Young-shin explained why she had this one-sided love for Healer to Bong-soo and I found that moment really telling. It told me that she was self-aware of the fact that she didn't know much about him yet. And then her self-dialogue in episode 8 further drove that in when she pretty much said that she CHOOSES to trust in people, with full knowledge that she could get hurt. So she's not stupid. She just does what she wants to, fully recognizing that she'll have to deal with the consequences if she's wrong. That, in my mind, is a cool character.

And, well, as for the reporter stuff. I'm with Peeps on this one. I don't think there's any reason why she shouldn't be a reporter. And even if I thought that profession did deal with too much violence, I'd answer your question as to why she still chose it like this: Because she really wants to, it's her dream. So she's not going to let her problem with violence keep her from doing it. And, let's be real, even if someone didn't have a trauma, it would be normal to be really scared in a situation with a bunch of thugs and a girl getting beaten in front of you. That is not an everyday occurrence for a reporter.

That said, I do agree with you about her not ignoring her health problem and trying to face her trauma. I really hope she does that.

0

I'm not sure whether I prefer Young-shin over Kim Nana (or vice versa) as a character, I guess thinking about it long and hard... PMY just pales a little next to Ji Chang-wook (this is the first drama I've ever seen him in). To me, his acting is very natural and effortless – transforming in a split second between characters. PMY's acting feels a little more, ummm, acted. Like she's been told to play this kind of character, while JCW just IS the character. I'm not saying she's a bad actress or anything, she's fine... but not really more than that.

<How can you be so reckless as to ask a faceless stranger out on a date? One who has been accused by cops of double murder!? OK so he rescued you. But he was paid for it.

I sort of agree with that (even without the double murder). I thought the date was... fan service. It was cute and the hand-holding at the end was certainly sweet, but the very act of asking for a date (late at night and alone too?) was rather bizarre. I don't think I would have gotten into that car to drive me home either!

0

@Chandler

I agree, I wouldn't expect her to pick up super-quickly that Bong-soo is Healer either. Or that working as a reporter (esp. at a "News" place that is focused on entertainment) would expose her to much violence – although it's a little strange she hasn't dealt with her physical ailment much because how do you avoid violence 100% in real life? She could come across a fight anywhere, or see a glimpse of something on TV... unless having those pills on her is supposed to be "enough" treatment? But, I don't see it wrong for her to pursue her dream. (I just wish they hadn't made it so clear at the beginning that she's very much lacking as a reporter, failing her exams, getting into very low ranking schools etc. She didn't need to be set up as super-average or even below average.)

Not so sure about the "just trust" thing. I could see that for her trusting Bong-soo, but Healer? A guy whom she knows just about nothing about, except that he deals with dangerous business for money. Would you really go on a date with a person like that, late at night and alone? That's like willingly putting your love-blinders on in a situation that could potentially land you in deep trouble. Not just "hurt", but raped or murdered. I know it's dramaland and of course nothing is going to happen... but it's romanticising a situation where in reality she risks much more than just getting a little hurt. They could have left the date for later and come up with another situation that leads to them holding hands (since the hand holding was obviously a clue that's needed for later).

0

your words exactly.

I am also....not...convinced by the characters? yeah. and maybe the tension is not quite as heavy.

There is a part of me that feels the characters is sometimes where this drama falters. Like there is absolutely ZERO we know about some characters (e.g. basically everyone in the Some Day office except the three leads). They are minor characters of course, but they feel so flat to me that it flattens others things. Like Young-shin being so close to Bong-so and telling him the most intimate things (their phone conversations), when there's very little hint that she'd be having such conversations with her other office mates. I get the conversations are supposed to develop the love relationship, but they don't make quite sense to me: I can see how they increase Jung-ho's feelings for Young-shin b/c he spends time with her as Healer AND Bong-soo, but I feel the writers blurry the line a bit on Young-shin's end to whom Healer and Bong-soo are two separate people. I don't see why she'd be having such close convos with a guy she has know for a few weeks unless she generally has intimate conversations with anyone and everyone? Obviously, she's soon going to realise Bong-soo IS Healer, but it just felt a bit muddled to me before.

Okay... have to go board a plane now! (Heading back to London.)

I think in the early eps she felt responsible for BS, she was his sunbae and that was new to her, also she really is the sort of person that wants to trust other people and he had this fragile funny way. :) After some time I think they just clicked and she felt time and again more comfortable around him, he was always there helping her and listening to her stories. The feeling I got from the other people at the office was they didn't have much interest on her, that is not uncommon at work.

I agree. On the contrary I think she believed that she was the one protecting the fragile "Boong-sookie" and this caused him to reach several realisations on his own feelings while also allowing him to start opening up to himself and his past.

0

I still think it's too personal conversations too fast, but I have to say I watched eps. 1-11 in one day, so maybe it felt even faster. The downside of marathoning dramas sometimes is that a) inconsistencies become more glaring and b) the passage of time is sped up.

0

One day??? :) Yes, that messes up your way of feeling how much time has passed between episodes. I never could do that, I think the most I've seen of the same series in the same day were 3 or 4 eps in a row.

@Lixie – unfortunately I don't have that kind of willpower. If I marathon... I marathon.

I've watched City Hunter and am currently watching Healer. I found that Healer grew on me episode by episode, rather than the instantaneous thrill and interest City Hunter gave me. However I feel like Healer explores more complex emotions and I find myself drawn to it for reasons that I cannot fully explain. I feel like it's a combination of the impressive cast, decent plot, and the rawness of the pain experienced by the characters, especially in relation to the past. I personally find Young Shin a refreshing K-drama heroine. She's brave, has a strong sense of her own conscience and is optimistic about life. I actually love the fact that she's such a fun and quirky character, because it makes her all the more believable. Oh and I do find it oddly satisfying to observe the morally conflicted characters of this drama.

Required fields are marked *

Haha, I do see where the City Hunter 2 comes from, and all, but, I actually don't really agree. There may be many similarities, but I'm finding Healer to be completely different in many, many ways. And better in many ways.

But, yeah. I just completely disagree about Young-shin (like, oh lord, COMPLETELY), so I guess that just changes how we'd see things. And, for me, it isn't the little quirks the story gives her (like the can thing, which I could understand bothering some people), but rather her air and manner of speaking that set her apart. There’s something really natural about it, for me. And I actually don't really see her as the 'cute', 'clumsy' type, but maybe that's because she has just little enough of both of those to make me feel like they don't define her?

She's hands down, my favorite heroine in a long time and I don't expect to forget her anytime soon. Like part of the reason why I love this show so much is because, for once, the heroine IS interesting to me. She feels like someone I could actually be friends with. Approachable, and winning. But, to each their own :)

On another note, I just rewatched the last episode of Misaeng for like the 10th time and I practically still have happy tears running down my face from the ending. Gets me every. single. time. *sigh* It would be so great to get another Misaeng.

I guess it is PMY. To me she is always Kim Nana. Maybe a different actress as CYS would have made me like the show more. Or its just that because I know this show has potential, I expect more out of it. I like her mannerisms and her interactions with Bong Soo. But its her fangirling around Healer that I have a hard time accepting. The show gave us no indication why she was interested in "the courier boy" in the first place. He was her 2nd crush for a year wasn't it.

OK i will accept her breathlessness and all. She did not ask to be surrounded by goons. And its nice that she tries to save Bong Soo despite her condition.

I would have loved if the show had shown the duality of Bong Soo loving CYS because of her courage and Healer loving CYS because of her efforts to clear his name from the fake murder charge. And a CYS who likes a safe Bong Soo, but whose heart skips a beat at the allure of Healer.

Hmmm, my favourite female heroines recently were Gong Hyo-jin's in It's Okay It's Love (though I know many people found her annoying, I just found her very real) and Kang Sora's in Misaeng. Them I could be friends with.

I can't relate to Young-shin's very much... though at least she isn't annoying (which too many kdramas heroines are to me).

It might just be down to differences in tastes (and possibly certain preferences in actors – I'd definitely try any GHJ drama just for her, but I'd more reasons than that to watch a PMY one).

I haven't really been a Park Min-Young fan actually, but I love Gong Hyo-jin. I was one of the ones that really, really liked parts of her character in TOIL...but also got really, really frustrated by her at times. But, I agree about Kang Sora in Misaeng completely.

This is the first time I genuinely like what PMY's doing with her character. I think it's probably in the smaller, quieter moments with Bong-soo that I feel like I could be her friend.

you didn't like her in Sungkyunkwan Scandal?

I liked her there and I liked her in City Hunter too! I've always felt that she did a good job picking dramas/roles, but though I liked her, I never felt like she was irreplaceable in those roles either. For that reason, I never really became a huge fan, but here I'm really liking her :) Still not my favorite actress, but I genuinely like what she's doing with her character.

@Angie
I agree that the show hasn't given a good reason for CYS to like Healer and vice versa. Her fascination with him is understandable, but not her love for him. Also, I don't like the idea of CYS easily/blindly trusting the Healer like NDJ did in Liar Game. I also agree that she should be somewhat afraid of him. Unlike Superman, Healer isn't a superhero who saves people for a living. Healer is like a mercenary who is a suspect for murder.

I would have loved to see her spend a good amount of time investigating the Healer as a result of her fascination with him. Maybe, she could have a her own column in her online news that was just about the Healer like Iris in The Flash.

What makes this show really entertaining is the chemistry b/t PMY and JCW. For me, their acting makes their romance believable.

<I agree that the show hasn’t given a good reason for CYS to like Healer and vice versa. Her fascination with him is understandable, but not her love for him.

I agree with that as well.

<Healer is like a mercenary who is a suspect for murder.

He has also shown that he can be brutally violent... as tempting as it is to think that Hwang deserved that bloody beating, it's not for Healer to hand out "justice". It was as criminal as Hwang beating up his female employee. It also curiously stood in contrast to Healer's action at the beginning of the drama, when he flees through the subway with his client, fends off his opponents by fighting with them but saves the one guy's life rather than letting him be killed by the train.

(Of course, Young-shin doesn't know that Healer viciously beats Hwang with a golf club. But as a viewer I can just dismiss that.)

I am fine with the beating actually. Villians like Hwang have to beaten. And its not like he beat him to the verge of death. A few whacks to get him to reveal the location of the safe is fine.

I would not liken it to Hwang beating that lady.

On a different note, I just started Liar's Game and I'm appreciating that Shin Sung-rok gets to be more handsome than he was in You From Another Star (where I think they did a great job of making him look slightly off). Even though he's the bad guy in this one too-? Or is there a 'the bad guy' in this show? Gah, don't tell me, I'll just watch it.

1n2d -- so funny!

Return of Superman -- I'm watching it on KBS world, so we're still with the last epiodes of Tablo and Haru. Will definitely miss them.

Mr Back -- I totally lost interest 3/4 of the way and ended up reading the recaps online, just to know the ending.

Spy -- I'm liking it so far. I'm not feeling a click between  Sun-woo and his gf. I'm guessing we'll find out more about her eventually. I don't know which story path I'll be more excited about: Sun-woo and his mom teaming up together to fight Ki-chul. Or Sun-woo somehow chasing or fighting his mom for a short while. Either way should be fun.

Healer -- There are so many comments that they are a bit overwhelming! There are just three things I'd like to say today:
-- I cantvwait for episode 13!!!
-- I'm already dreading the ending. What will we do after the show is over?
-- there was a scene in episode 11 where JH was on a rooftop, feeling quite comfortable and chatting with Ajhumma. I'd love to see a scene with him, just at ease like that, with YS. No words needed. Just the two of them feeling at peace and happy (and interlocking their hands? Hugging?). On a rooftop. At night. With some hearted-shaped city lights (à la Misaeng) in the background...

Healer : Are words still needed????? Tuesday come sooner please :(

Kill me, Heal me : Liking and enjoying it very much so far. I ship Ri-Jin with both Se-gi and Do-hyun. That episode 3 ending got me right in the heart, it was just so sweet. I am beginning to think that Se-gi might be the real personality and Do-hyun the created persona. And i just love how the actress is portraying the character, her facial expressions though lol.

Pride and prejudice : Finally watched it, enjoyed it but not a fan of the ending.

I think it is not so much that se Gi is the original...maybe he is the persona of a brother or friend?

I am getting a deja vu of Liar Game with children playing. like Se Gi being the one to remember... but why the same face?

no speculations. lets just watch.

Oh Ri Jin = Origin. so origin of what? his problem? maybe he saved the girl from a burning house or something, instead of his (twin) brother - cause twins seems to be a theme... maybe Oh Ri on witnessed something? or who started the fire?

Mysterious.

Hopefully they get extra sponsorhip so they can continue with a lot of action.

Kill Me Heal Me is actually interesting though I did not expect much. It seems__Spoiler Alert-
that Oh Ri Jin also has some family secrets that she is not aware of but her parents and her bro seem to know.
Ji Sung character has so many personalities so as you said we cannot guess what/who is his true personality. I guess even he does not know who he truly is. He convinced that good modest him is his true self but it seems that his true self might be something( someone) else that he is not even aware of.

I am not pulled in to Healer like other viewers are and I am not sure why I am not intrigued by Healer. But I find KMHM storyline is interesting.

I like Healer but I totally understand people who don't see its appeal. With hype come high expectations and more often than not they are not met, not that Healer is bad, it is good (acting, directing, consistent writing, etc.) but nothing really special either. Then you have shows like KMHM that you start with little to no expectations at all because everything about it screams disaster then surprise! There's actually something of substance about it and most of all a stellar Ji Sung singlehandedly saving what would have been a total wreck otherwise. No offense but I shudder at the memory of some of the names that were first suggested for this drama, I can't imagine anyone but JS playing such a character. He is obviously having fun with it, it's a real pleasure to watch him

I find the shows very similar too but everything has been better on Healer from ep 1 for me. The story has holes, I agree, but CH's story was beyond silly in my opinion, it was fun but preposterous, Bad Daddy was very corny and the characters didn't feel realistic for me like everyone in Healer does.

I think Young-Shin is a bit better then the average heroine, yes, she has a traumatic past and is overly cheerful and caring but I like that she is also ambitious and has a good sense of humor. Women usually don't have much sense of humor in kdramas. :)

WATCH MR. RIGHT WANTED. RIGHT NOW. YOU WILL THANK ME. This is the first Taiwanese drama that I've made it past the first episode (a few times I didn't even make it past the intro song) and I love it to itty bitty pieces. It would be my ultimate crack except that the subs are slow (it's on Viki and it's killing me to wait but I have to watch more than one at a time and they are stuck at ep 13 for mostly finished subs). I thought it'd be a vapid rom-com but It's both funny, thoughtful, touching and very nicely directed, wonderfully acted by the lead female Sonia Sui(?), and the best cameo ever by Sunny Wang (though that seems to be a running theme with him). WATCH EEEEEETTTTT!

This week has been a doozy. Working like mad, no time for anything fun.

What I've watched:

Gap-Dong: Why, writers? Why do you have to go for such low-hanging, obvious fruit? But still, creeepy guy is creepy.

Detective K: Secret of the Virtuous Widow: Well, I watched half of it before the power went on the fritz, but it was hilarious.

What I want to be Watching:

Bloooooood. I've even been lurking on their twitter feed looking at set photos. Come on, Feb 16, hurry up!

K-drama Moment:

My supposedly-kdrama-hating husband asks: "Did you order Coffee Prince & Misaeng for your library? ::ha::

Patron brings back Marriage, not Dating: "This was SO FUNNY...I need more like this." ::double ha::

A little off topic here ... but the wife and I just recently discovered Dami Im ... she's the winner of Australia's 2013 X Factor ... we don't watch those kinds of shows but stumbled on it via youtube .... she's certainly not your typical Korean beauty ...for starters it's pretty obvious that she's had no plastic surgery and she even mentioned that she had resisted such suggestions in the past and stated that in Australia she felt she was more accepted being "natural".

Anyway ... if you're bored and want something to watch .. look her up ... she's got an amazing voice and a wonderful personality.

Good morning Beanies. I am behind of couple Kdrama so hopefully. I will catch up and post my thought of it. I did watched the first episode of Kill me Heal Me. I am not sure of it. I sawed the movie Sybil starring Sally Field. So, I did see a talk show about person who have it too. It is a disorder but a rare one from what my friends told me. I might watch it later to see if it is interest me.

In another note, my daughter is happy and healthy baby girl. Required fields are marked *

Pride and Prejudice- Possible spoilers for those who haven't finished, read at your own risk. Seriously, that's what we get, thanks show, I gave you 21 hours and you gave me that. Admittedly I never loved Pride and Prejudice so the ending doesn't bother me as much as say Blade Man but still. Am I the stupid one for not understanding how we got from the end of episode 20 to anything that happened in 21? Sure throughout 20 Dong-chi and Chief Moon were talking about going to court despite lack of evidence but at the end it looked like our main characters were going to be at least confronted by the enemy if not abducted. Then there's that scene of Dong-chi digging at the beginning of 21 that like the end of 20 ties to nothing. It's almost as if they had another direction for the story in mind then woke up one morning realized they were out of time and decided to go with the court thing instead of their original plan leaving the scenes at the end of 20 and beginning of 21 in because they didn't think anyone would notice that they don't make any sense.

Pinocchio- What a cute ending to a wonderfully cute show.

Healer- It just keeps getting better.

Punch- As much as I love it, I think I've decided to drop watching it for now and just keep up with the re-caps. I'm just not in the mood for something so heavy right now.

Kill Me, Heal Me- I watched the first two episodes on viki. It's got me thinking there's one of two behind the scenes problems, either the writer, director and other staff have no faith in Ji Sung's ability to successfully portray all the different personalities, or the writer is just that weak of a writer.

Pride and Prejudice started out so promising but its later episodes just seemed so stupid, aimlessly wandering from one newly discovered (and really stupidly discovered) piece of game-changing theory to another.

By the end, I couldn't even keep track of why we were supposed to care about the kidnapping or what its relation to the present day case was, and frankly the show wasted the chemistry of Choi Jin-hyuk and Baek Jin-hee (except for five minute gaps where they suddenly seem to remember "oh yeah, these people are attracted to each other, let's have them make out and go on dates with no real buildup")

Hi, greetings from Mexico!!!

Ok I fell, out of curiosity I let me drag into the Healer madness with all the comments, since I started to visit this page I haven't seen so many comments about a drama.
Loooooove it to pieces, I usually don't like KBS's dramas and when the teaser and posters started to get out I wasn't interested because silly of me I also didn't know Ji Chang Wook till now T_T
It was an amazing way to start the year, this drama will be the starting point to compare the coming dramas.
I finished episode 9 yesterday but I don't want to continue because I know what coming next, the slow torture waiting another episode and another recap, it can't be avoided.
I rarely comment but I want to thank this community and all the beanies who put really insightful comments and made my watching drama such a great experience.

Happy Friday, everyone!

My drama week in a nutshell: One show begins, another ends, and the third keeps right on going with its awesome magic.

The show that begins: Spy. Ooh, I'm going to like this one. Mysterious, thrilling (that bomb almost gave me a heart attack), and with characters I already care about.

The show that ended was of course Pinocchio: and aw, I'm going to miss this one. The only two things I found the finale lacking were a resolution to the Cap/Yoo Rae story (though I'm not too upset, since her taking on the other reporter's role was too funny, and there was nothing telling us they *weren't* together), and at least an update on Hyung (is he still in prison? Couldn't we just see his face one more time before the end?). But in all I'm left feeling sweetly satisfied.

And, finally, the show that has completely charmed me (and many others, apparently) with it's magic: Healer! I love everything about this drama, and somehow I don't even know why, unless it's the central couple. The way he held her hand, the way he saves her so often by letting her think she's saving him (which brings out a level of courage she wouldn't otherwise know she has), the way she swoons over the Healer (because who wouldn't?) but it's Park Bong Soo she wants to talk to when she's upset. (Also, random, but it struck me most this week just how much the five friends remind me of the Marauders in Harry Potter.)

And also Running Man: usually, people who complain all the time and refuse to participate get on my nerves. Lee So Jin, however, I found really funny, and I think it's because no matter how hard he tried not to care, he couldn't seem to help getting caught up in the games at some point or another. I almost feel bad for Seung Gi at the beginning (he was so proud of himself for fooling everyone!) but not bad enough that it wasn't hilarious anyway.

Have a great weekend!

yeah I really liked Spy too - I look forward to it serving up good doses of suspense and badassness. Though I spy (haha) a couple of dark horse characters I unexpectedly like a lot - like Sun-woo's dad and the North Korean defector spy Soo-yeon.

I miss Pinocchio too, and I wanted at least a brief mention of hyung at the end ( at least his obligatory thirty seconds this time was not behind the prison glass, I'd almost forgotten how heart-wrenching he and little bro can be together). I'm ok with Cap/Yoo-rae not being obviously a thing, but I LOVE that Nosy Jang and Camerawoman Jae-hwan are together, smoochies and all!

(and speaking of smoochies, OTP smoochies at the end, I loved them, swooning right now)

Hi, everyone.

I was wondering if anyone here experiences technical difficulties when watching kdramas online. The sites I usually visit are viki, dramafever (but not regularly), dramacool, and soompitv. I don't know if there is a connection, but I wonder if visiting these sites might be slowing down my computer. Does anyone have any advice? I mean, I think that the problem is more than my crappy internet provider. I feel like everything has become slower. As an aside, I do have an antivirus program and I haven't been warned about possible viruses. I haven't been watching a lot of dramas lately, but I would like to be able to watch the the two or three that I am following without difficulties. I know that things like dust collection and overheating can slow down computers, so I've been trying to make sure that the electronics are dust-free. Anyway, thanks for any tips you might have :).

A question: Is there another station like KBS World TV that offers Korean shows with English subs? As far as I can tell or have been able to find out, MBS, SBS, tvN, mnet, jbts - only upload the shows in Korean.

Check your Task Manager for any programs that are running and using up a lot of your CPU power. You can check the CPU Usage % and if it's close to 100% then there is a program/programs that are hogging all the processing which tend to bog everything down. If that is the case then go to the Processes Tab and find which program/programs is doing it, highlight the program and hit End Process (as long as it's not an essential program). Then check if that improved your computer's performance which it should have.

Have you cleaned your cache ?

The cache can get full of "junk" which can slow your browser down. If you haven't cleaned your cache lately, or ever, I'd try that first.

Here's a link to a wikihow on how to clear your cache for the more popular browsers, IE, Chrome, Firefox, Safari.

A useful tool for PCs or Macs is CCleaner . The C stands for "Crap". It's free and can clear out a lot use useless junk that accumulates on your machine.

Hi Peridot. Good advice from both Aigoooo and John.

I use CCleaner only to clean out the registry. Long story why, but I agree wholeheartedly with John that it's a great program. http://www.piriform.com/

In addition to what Aigoooo said you can look into changing the Services settings. That's kind of involved and need to know what you're doing. I'll see if I can dig up the site I've used for info on that.

Another big way to increase performance is to do away with extraneous stuff that starts up with your computer. Best way to do that is with a program called Autoruns:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

Lastly, I highly recommend the following. I've found this to catch some bugs that even computer techs miss. I've fixed many sluggish computers this way. There are some fantastic volunteer security experts who will walk you through the procedures. FREE. First off, follow these...

Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13616

You'll need to set aside some time to run some scans. Once you're done with the scans you'll post them at their site and they will get back to you. They may have you do additional steps depending on what they find. Very kind and helpful people.

At the very least, these mandatory steps do a lot to clean out the extraneous crap from your computer, and that in itself can really improve performance.

In addition to the programs (all free) you'll need to run in the Manditory Steps, there is another I recommend Junkware Removal Tool: http://thisisudax.org/

John, I think we've met on this subject before? As I remember you recommended one of the other sites that helps people with this? I know there are others and I've heard many are good. If you know of them I'd appreciate your suggestions. The folks at dslreports are the only ones I have experience with. I've used them many times since 2007. No, come to think of it I've gotten some help from the experts at malwarebytes, but I have far more experience with dslreports.

Sorry for the length of this. I am passionate about happy, clean computers.

One heads up: if you are using Hola to view programs only available outside your area, a couple of these scans will disable it. You just need to re-install Hola https://hola.org/.

Do look at the "Mandatory Steps" link. Even if you do not want to use their help, the programs are invaluable. I use them regularly on all the computers I maintain.

The basics I use are:

CCleaner
http://www.piriform.com/

TFC - Temp File Cleaner
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/file/187-tfc-temp-file-cleaner-by-oldtimer/

Malwarebytes (there is a free version)
https://www.malwarebytes.org

AdwCleaner
https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/

Junkware Removal Tool
http://thisisudax.org/

But if you are having real problems there are other steps you should take, like doing an online antiviral scan:

This is an important step to do even if you ran your resident AV program, as some malware can disable the program currently installed on your PC. The online AV scanners can sometimes reveal infections your present AV can not. An online scanner can't be "fooled" or damaged by malware. The online scan will not interfere with your currently installed AV program.

Mandatory Steps has links to a couple online AV scans and instructions.
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13616

Again, I apologize for the length. I'm a geek who sincerely wishes "Happy Computing!" for everyone.

I've used the SpywareInfo forums before and they worked wonders.

Depending on what the issue is (if it's a virus, trojan or malware) of some sort, they'll be able to ID the cause and provide info and tools to administer the cure.

As you know some of these can be quite intricate and the average user would not be able to remove these without some guidance.

Here's the URL to their "getting started" page.

http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/topic/79038-instructions-for-posting-requested-logs/

I've heard of dslreports as well. Folks that provide these services are lifesavers.

Fwiw, I no longer have my Windows PC. I use Firefox on a Mac. There is a fantastic addon for Firefox, called NoScript.

https://noscript.net/

Not to get too carried away, here's a brief description of how it works, from their webpage.

When you install NoScript, JavaScript, Java, Flash Silverlight and possibly other executable contents are blocked by default.

You will be able to allow JavaScript/Java/... execution (scripts from now on) selectively, on the sites you trust.

You can allow a site to run scripts temporarily, if you're just surfing randomly, or permanently, when you visit it often and you really trust it.

It might sound like a lot of mumbo jumbo to most of us, but, it goes a long way to help prevent "bad things" happening to your computer.

Hope this helps.

0

Thanks John.

I agree! The volunteers at these sites are angels. So patient and helpful.

Thanks for the NoScript info! That will be especially helpful now. I am currently helping a client make the transition from a PC to a Mac. She also is getting a new ISP, an iPhone, and switching to 2 new emails -- one personal, one professional -- in ONE week. It's been a challenge to say the least. I'm on a PC myself, but fortunately I'm bilingual.

I'm currently maintaining 10 computers remotely, family and one client. (Thank you TeamViewer!) I turn off Java on all of them. They don't use sites that require Java, and if they should come across one, it'll let them know. But I didn't have the ability to turn off JavaScript selectively. Thanks. Very cool!

I have another Q for you. Do you use an AV program in addition to the built-in one on your Mac? My personal experience is that the "Mac never gets viruses" party-line is a crock. I used to do iPhone and iPad support, and my iMac got hit a few times. Fortunately the guy in IT knew what to do, and didn't buy the company kool aid about Macs and viruses/malware. (BTW, horrible company to work for. Their once acclaimed customer support is bullsh*** now. Treat their customers, and tech support staff, like dirt. Could give horror stories. I'll spare you.)

Anyway... I've strayed. Not sure whether to put an AV program on my client's Mac, and if so what. Do you have an opinion? Would very much appreciate your input.

Unfortunately in Kdrama-Land, it's especially important to be proactive.

Okay folks... that's all for now from tech corner.

Thanks again, John.

Macs do get far fewer attacks than Windows, but they do get them. So does iOS, though Apple will never admit it. But, as a Romanian system admin co-worker pointed out to me a few years ago, as Macs become more affordable, they are becoming more prevalent in Eastern European countries where so many of the viruses originate. The more Macs are sold worldwide, the more they'll be targeted. Even Apple and Google (which has migrated away from Windows almost entirely) were hit by a Trojan in 2013.

Sorry... I do go on. :-(

Any feedback greatly appreciated John.

I've used ESET before. It receives pretty good reviews.

Many thanks John. I've used Eset before on PCs and always been happy, nice to know it's good for Mac.

Owl, this week we are tackling three Hanja.
One 一
Two 二
Three 三

In Korean that is 일, 이, 삼.

For numbers, Hanja is so direct. I like that. Thanks, JBB, for keeping me motivated. Now I pay attention to the Hangul and Hanja titles for kdramas.

For those who don't know Hangul yet, let me break down the Korean.

There are 2 number systems: native Korean (하나 hana, 둘 dul, 셋 set) and Sino-Korean (일 il, 이 i, 삼 sam) borrowed from trading with the Chinese.

ㅇ(silent when in first consonant position)
1 = ㅇ + ㅣ(i) + ㄹ(r/l) = 일
2 = ㅇ + ㅣ(i) = 이
3 = ㅅ (s) + ㅏ (a) + ㅁ(m) = 삼

Owl is right when she says pictures of Chinese ( 一 二 三) do seem easier than 일, 이, 삼.

Thank you so much.! For explaining. I had no idea there were two sets of numbers, although I did notice it. I hear the native Korean numbering system more in dramas and songs. In plus nine boys, they call her
' samshik' which confused me. But now I know. Thanks!

Koreans typically use the Korean system for age/counting, but occasionally use the Sino-Korean system to tell time.

Chinese 'one two three' is easier because they're glyphs, ie, they're derived from pictures/shapes of objects. Hangul, instead are like alphabets, and they're simply predetermined letters arranged in whatever order they sound like.

In fact, Traditional Chinese words can be a lot more nuanced than the Simplified Chinese that China and Singapore are using today.

A common example is the word "listen". In Traditional Chinese, it's 聽, in which the top left is also the word for "ear", the bottom left is the word for "king". The top right is some mangled version for "eyes", the horizontal line at the center-right, as you can tell from 一 二 三, is the word for "one" and in bottom right is the word for "heart". In that one word, it shows the entire meaning of listen, which is to hear with your ears, and give the full, undivided (one) attention from your heart.

The Simplified Chinese version is 听, which, uh, cuts away a lot as you can see.

However, the advantage is that more people can become literate in Chinese. And it definitely helps those with learning difficulties, such as those with Dyslexia. (If it's hard enough to read English words in which the alphabets are all the same, imagine the nightmare of trying to cough up or recognize words like 聽.)

Not related info, but I thought I'd just share.

@Peeps and Julia the Berkshire Beanie
Thank you for that! I find it fascinating! I've been studying the Hangul alphabet (just consonants so far) in prep. for my korean language course I'm signing up for so whatever you feel like sharing I'm grateful to learn!

0

Peeps, thanks for the explanation.

As a dyslexic, I do find Chinese characters easier to remember than letters that can flip (ㅗ ㅜ for example).

But Korean is a lot easier to learn than Mandarin, coming from a (Singaporean) Chinese here. Simply because Mandarin has no alphabets so sometimes you can come across words you just have no idea how to read, while Korean uses alphabets so you can read every word even if you don't understand it.
Not sure if you know this but quite alot of the words, especially the vocab, have very similar pronunciations.
For example, yi er san = il i sam.
xinzang = shim jang (heart)
taiyang = taeyang (sun)
So you're actually partially learning Mandarin while learning korean :)

Good luck in your learning of the Korean language! I have managed to pick up quite a fair bit by watching an insane number of variety shows and dramas and managed to use some of it when I last went to Korea, although I completely messed up the honorifics haha.

0

During Sejong the Great's reign as King, the Korean language was created so that it would be easier for people to learn. Most people at the time used Chinese to read and write, but Korea didn't have a true written language of their own. In order for everyone including commoners to be literate, Hangul was created. I don't think Hangul wasn't officially used until the 1900s though.

0

Also, have you noticed that movie titles in Korean tend to use the English word? For example: the series Nine: Nine Time Travels (Hangul: 나인 ㄴ (n) ㅏ (a) ㅇ ㅣ(i) ㄴ(n) ... nine )

I find it interesting how dramas can have completely random similarities at times.
This week Valid Love and Healer, both Monday/Tuesday dramas, had two weird parallels:

Curry Rice - Both dramas showed the romantic couple cooking a real meal together for the first time. In both cases they made curry rice.
Carpenter Kim wins the OCD game here for cutting is veggies in precisely the same size and shape plus organizing them in a perfectly segmented circle.

Soyu & Junggigo's Some - Ajumma sang it to Jung Hoo and Jang Hee Tae's research buddy sang it to Yoo Sung Joo regarding her one-sided love with Jang Hee Tae.

I guess this wouldn't be considered too off-topic... I watched the J-drama, "A Million Stars Falling from the Sky," starring Takuya Kimura, and while he and the female lead ate lots of drool-worthy dishes, my favorite was when they sat on a rooftop in the late afternoon, and he brings out a big black cast-iron pot of homemade curry (he's a chef in the drama)...and it looked sooooooooooooooooooo good.

Valid Love I am still liking it but I guess my love has been shaken. Is it a test of loyalty? I fail writer, sorry, first Healer, that shameless thief, then all the crazy people in KMHM and HTH just stole my heart. :)

Last week I felt they were trying to push new romances too fast, this week began more realistically with Il-Ri and the husband really letting themselves feel the sadness of the break up and then ep 12 went crazy again. Way too fast. I mean, I understand the events that finally led him to think his reaction was maybe not what was best for him in the long run and even though he still doesn't realize his faults, I can see that he would want to come back to her, but to go from this to let's try an open relationship is just too much. It doesn't fit his character! I'm not sure even Kim Joon would accept that. I don't understand how IR feels about them anymore either, it was very late yesterday, I'll rewatch later but if more people watching VL can explain please do. :)
I liked that the pseudo romance with coworker seems to be finished, since it was going nowhere anyway and I don't like the idea of having another person in hubby's family with a problem. Can that annoying brother please go to study in America please? He is just filler and it's boring filler. I want a resolution with unni and I want her mom to come back to being a decent reasonable mom too.

yes, the lvoe is shaken but I for one dont feel it was too fast. it was more like they arent steady in their emotions and choices to begin with. it is just another one of their shaky impulses, so to me, it makes sense, with the character sort of.
no more angst. maybe Il Ri had some weight off her mind and she is bouncing back up like a ball, thats why it seemed a little rushed. I love how kim joon is working on trying to understand.

we´ll see. I just like the athmosphere in the drama, it reminds me of Shut up fbb

I think when Hae Tae proposed the open relationship he was not serious, he just blurted it out in desperation.
My biggest problem right now to retain my love for this show is Kim Joon. Seriously, you got fake invite to tea and then you were dismissed seconds later, but you just came around and acted like a puppy? Where is the Kim Joon who stood up and said "I don't want your half heart"? I mean I have no problem with clingy second lead. Korean dramas cannot do without them. But he is just following an erratic route of mood swings that is not well explained.
On the other hand, I really like the psychological roller-coaster that Hae Tea is going through. It is hitting him slowly and hard that he indeed never really tried in his relationship with Il Ri.

I think why Kim Joon acted like that was because of those stares with Il Ri she tried to deny any feelings but her eyes were filled with tears and stuff ...or something like it. and fear and confusion. since he saw it, he just obliged to her impulses cause he understands the state she is in

I just really want to love this show, even if it has flaws. gimme a break.
but it better now gimme any more angst

I don't think is absurb. WHat's the point with IR - KJ previous relationship development that need several episode to develop if not use for further plot development? If can be break only by one harsh statement? I get the sense Their relationship have more understanding than IR - HT relationship. He also deeper sense of a good understanding than HT.

It's not the quantity that's count, Their relationship is shorter, but the quality of their relationship in those moment was more honest and open.

Moreover, they often show again and again, when KJ sit in his house to eat, alone, and imagining IR. From the 1st episode, he is already depict as someone who deep down desperately need a real relationship with someone. And he know it's IR. They are forgive each other and clear their misunderstanding when their emotion start calming down. IMO it's very human feeling.

Question: Where's Waldo?:

List actors you like but have mysteriously gone MIA or hasn't been around in a while you wish would do a project this year. (Not including military service guys).

I ask this because I randomly remembered Lee Tae-sung (Tae-mu in Rooftop Prince). He's maybe not the best actor but he's sufficiently amusing and attractive, so shouldn't he be getting roles? Curious. Checked, he was in I Summon You Gold but I'm not that desperate. Still, I liked him. What about you guys?

Oh, dear lord, I could do this forever.

First off, JAE HEE from Delightful Girl, Choon Hyang! HANDS DOWN. I want this guy to be in a hit drama so badly. It's been TEN years since he was in a drama that did him justice. I feel like he's missed his moment and like he might not ever make a come-back and that makes me sad :(

Shin Dong-wook from Soulmate. I know he has his illness, but in 2013 we got news that he might make a comeback! :( But he hasn't. I hope he's doing well.

Kim Jae-wook. I want him as a lead and I want him, oh, I don't know, NOT getting cut out of the drama (ala Age of Feeling). It feels like he hasn't been around lately, even though I guess it hasn't really been that long.

Ohh JAE HEE I didn't see that but I liked him in 3-Iron and started Color of a Woman because of him but dropped it. The bromance between him and his tarantula killed me, but I got annoyed at the unsubtle propaganda (I exaggerate only slightly).

Kim Jae-wook I thought was just a pretty boy but he's improved a lot since Coffee Prince and I'd like to see him in something good so I can fully reassess his chops since I skipped his projects after Bad Guy. It'd be cool to see him play a character beyond his face.

Kim Jae Wook needs to come back. I dislike Age of Feeling except Kim Jae Wook and Kwak Dong-yeon. I thought that KJW was fine in the drama and it is still not so clear as to why he left suddenly. He is a good actor when it comes to display his turmoil fragile state.

@museofmanymasks: Lee Tae-sung is actually doing his military service now...he entered as soon as I Summon You, Gold! wrapped up in October 2013. I remember clearly because it was a double whammy -- he was going to service, and he had secretly married right before he left (and had a toddler son already to boot!). I was actually surprised with his age, because I figured him to be in his early twenties.

But yes...I agree, he's sufficiently amusing and attractive. Honestly watched Hooray for Love for him & Lee Bo-young. At least he will be finishing up this year!

Actually, I don't think netizens were in any sort of uproar about it...mostly because it was all done by the time the news came out, and I think they helped that he went into the military.

I googled him just now...she's 7 years older than him (!! he's turning 30 this year!) and apparently they registered their marriage a year earlier (2012) but didn't officially have a ceremony because his grandparents were ailing.

Hooray for Love...if you can watch your typical weekend drama, you can watch this. There were times where I absolutely hated it because there's so much I can stand where the heroine keeps getting beat down and stepped on. But LTS & LBY as leads made it worthwhile for me...as did supporting roles of single father (Ahn Sang-tae) and little daughter (Kim Yoo-bin--she was Saet-byul in God's Gift) -- their identical curly hair, saturi and cute moments really helped cut through the angst. I could do without a lot of the angst surrounding the parents (which is quite a lot)...but I remember it more being a story of a woman who rose above all the shit life threw at her and fell in love in the process.

Wild Speculations (and possible spoiler?) On KMHM-

I'm wondering if Nana is Oh Ri Jin and not another of his personalities but rather that drawing was from a lost memory involving her. Like maybe she was there too? since we know that she is someone from his forgotten past (and to have forgotten her its most likely that he knew her during his missing time frame which in drama land means she was probably involved somehow). It's a possibility anyway...

I agree that possible ORJ and CDH may have shared a past.
There was the conversation with ORJ's mom questioning if both twins are biologically hers.

And ORO also adds to the mystery in the parking garage when he catches himself talking about the neighbour with the trampoline. Nevermind his stalker-board on CDH's life.

But then there was the one with CDH's mom alluding that he isn't her son, even if he came out of her belly(?). Of course the Viki subbers seem to not like the bickering moms, the subs are never complete when they get into family politics.
Yea, this is going to be a wild ride.

0

More possible spoilers KMHM-
Hmmn. What i got from that was since she (CDH's mom) wasn't the legal wife but the mistress they probaby put CDH on the family registry under the wife's name (like in Heirs), so maybe that's why she said it? And whatever happened to him maybe she wasn't around at the time because he was being raised by the first wife and family? I would hate to think she was there when all his trauma was taking place and didn't do anything about it to stop whatever was going on since she seems to know what happened. Anyway, a wild ride indeed but I'm looking forward to it!

Yes sometimes i do agree that the members tend to overreact cough*kwangsoo*cough but then you don't have to blatantly point it out and he's willing to be in this show so he should know what the guest should do/comply, right....yea,yea, i know,i know, okay, okay, i'm hiding right now,i know u guys love him.

Hello all:

Hope everyone doing well!

I'm overjoyed at my new HP Stream 11 laptop! I am so in heaven. And only $200! Soooooo happy! Yep, material stuff just makes me soooooooooo happy sometimes.

Dramas:
Valid Love: Am not sure what our heroine's "growth" is all about. But loving Lee Soo Hyuk. I WANT that man!

Kill me, Heal me: There is so much tenderness in the OTP's connection to each other. WOW! CHEMISTRY! I like a heroine who has seen it all and who deals with every human idiosyncracy as if it's no big thing. There's a lovingsweetness in that. One of the best all-accepting "people are people" characters I've seen in a long while in any kind of show.

Heart to Heart: The undercurrent of pain and grief in this one is sooo good!

King's Face: Kinda wish Secret Door had been like this where we see the whole journey of the character. But they don't seem to know what to do with the king's wife, do they? This is one truly sexless drama.

Healer: Yes, I HAVE to catch up on this.

What happens to my family: I keep crying anticipating Daddy Cha's death. And wow, how is Sis gonna take this?

Punch: Looks like heroine is gonna take the two step forward one step backward growth path to common sense. When will she learn to stop trusting the law?

We Got Married: Ah me, Nam Goong Min! And Song Jae Rim. Love those guys!

Have a great weekend, all.

Oh, now you've reminded me What's With This Family is ending too......that's my entire last wave of 2014 dramas gone! I dread Dad's death :/

I haven't been following We Got Married but I do like that Rim and Namgoong Min are so comfortable with their "wives". Though I feel bad for Hong Jong-hyun's wife, they are just so awkward around each other and it has to suck to be around a dude who can't appear attracted to you even when he is supposed to.

(I feel bad for poor Yura, I've actually come to like her since I saw her web drama Be Arrogant. She's a decent enough actress there, and unspeakably gorgeous - like 10x more than what she is on WGM)

Yes, that awkwardness. It's hard to watch. At first i wondered if he was just nervous with her. Now i'm thinking he just is FINALLY letting himself relax. That poor woman has tried so hard all these episodes to loosen him up.

Carole -

Hi! Hope you're doing well today.

Congrats on the HP Stream 11 purchase! ..... I got a Stream 13 recently and having fun with it also!

Quick question: When you visit Dramabeans, is your laptop freezing and automatically reloading the page? I ask because it happens to me and a message comes up that the "script" is too long or taking too long to load, something like that. ...... I just wait for a couple of minutes and the message goes away, the page reloads and I continue. It seems harmless, but it's sure annoying because it only does it on this site. *sadface*

I'm looking forward to Kill Me, Heal Me. ..... That's next on my "to watch" list!

Have a great weekend!

See Me Feel Me Touch Me Heal Me Kill Me
This kdrama is really working for me. Ji Sung (Do Hyun) and Hwang Jung Eum (Ri Jin) are together again, and there IS chemistry. The scene where they were going through the hospital (ep 4) meeting people was just, wow, great acting. My heart is so sad for Do Hyun and I really hate the nightmares he has from his childhood – things will get darker before there is any light at the end of his tunnel. The heavy is duty and the light moments are big smile makers – what a contrast. There are already some “bests” – revolving door – best cute scene; Dispatch – best most appropo nickname; Ri Jin and Ri Oh – best twin siblings.

I want to do a kdrama cameo. I would be satisfied with a quick little walk-on, if I could only do the scene where I would take a head-thrown-back gulp from a can of soda, nonchalantly turn to go back to my office, and then do the “shocked at what I see” spray everywhere. It never grows old and Ri Jin’s version had me laughing like crazy. What cameo scene you would really love to do in a kdrama?

Prosecutors Prosecuting Prosecutors –we’re talkin’ about that in post #6 up above...

FT Island’s Hangul Live – you can now find all the posts in one convenient location on my blog. Also, Roommate viewers, join in the discussion for the show whose format continues to be as random as anything out there. http://www.cimiart.wordpress.com

Otherwise, it’s a white winter wonderland with more snow piling up today. Shovel, and then coffee, coffee, coffee and more kdramas. Makes me happy

p.s. Ri On’s silent mouthed (peace) \/ sign through the car window - l♥ve him to bits.

I would want to be an evil mother or any of Shin Sung Rok's characters. Let me explain. While annoying and terrible, I've always wanted to play those sort of evil/pushy mother roles because they seem so fun--though more so before kdramas. Like Mrs. Bennet who wasn't evil but it'd be fun to be hilariously flighty and all "my poor nerves". And Cinderella's stepmother from Brandy's Cinderella: Awesomely terrible--or the reverse. In kdramas, Mrs. Bennet would be Heir's rich mom maybe and Step-mom would fit most of them. Part of Shin Sung Rok's awesomeness is that he has fun being the bad guy--you can't do that heinous stuff in real life (and get away with it unless your lucky/genius), so you might as well enjoy it on screen: let's face it, power is intoxicating. OH! or a despot king. I was born to rule, though in real life I'd be the best benevolent world dictator ever.

I just thought about that. I want to be a NORMAL foreigner, who is kind of lost and tries to speak koran and is embarrassed and gets in trouble somewhere, gets arrested and doesnt know why. kinda like lost in translation. maybe not just a cameo not a big role, but some weird foreigner who pops up here and there. a REAL PERSON. cause those so called foreigners are so terrible. Hey i am not blond I am a redhead!

winter wonderland. you tell me. we have had snow frost then melted then frost then melted the result is you cannot go outside at all, it is all ice covered with about 10 cm of water and so slippery that you just cant get anywhere and no use putting sand of grovel on it cause th water washes it away.

sorry, seriously, you need to remember I cannot stop myself from blurting out stuff. it just pops out. random delights

Along with coffee coffee coffee and kdramas today, I was deliciously tickled beyond description to come across a box of Aloha Gems (macadamia nuts covered in chocolate) that were hidden out of sight since Thanksgiving or before behind salad bowls and a bread board on a high shelf as I was rummaging around for a grater. kdrama cameo

I'd like to do a cameo where I show up in the background making the "What is WRONG with you people?!?" face all through the series. Like, with increasing levels of comic shenanigans outside my shop, or something.

And then I'd maybe get one really snarky muttered line at the end of the series.

@harmonyfb: I'd be one of those people sitting in the cafe/office/pojangmacha when the 2 OTPs are bickering. Either the girl or the guy ends up yelling, and the people nearby turn around and stare at them like they're crazy.

If the main guy doesn't get a glass of water/soju in the face, then he's pretty lucky.

Pinocchio is over! I miss it so much already, it's not reinventing anything groundbreaking but my goodness the way it made me feel so much......and I may just have rewound on those ending kisses a lot, because they were swoonworthy.

(unlike many, I belong to a school of thought that believes that even a French kiss can look soulless and wrong if the couple doesn't sell it well enough, but I loved how tender yet passionate they were. Bonus wedding dress and tux were much appreciated! And it looks like it paid off somewhat, since they got 13-odd percent in ratings - the highest for any weekday drama in the last six months, I think)

And where was hyung in the end?! I wanted to see him! (I hope Yoon Kyun-sang's phone is ringing off the hook with offers for roles, he can really nail the sad puppy eyes look)

I watched Pirates last week too, as my k-movie of the week. It may as well have been called Pirates of the Caribbean, because it was so close to that in format and Kim Nam-gil bears a spooky resemblance to a young Johnny Depp. Sohn Ye-jin makes a great action heroine, though - not her greatest performance but she can handle fights with style and looks good doing it.

(funnily, the part that really got to me was the whale....a CGI whale)

Other stuff I saw (not j or kmovie) The Theory of Everything.

I'm normally quite sceptical of Hollywood biopics because they seem so obviously calculated to get awards, but this one was really good and just a little more complex than your average biopic. And I loved Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking (yes, THAT Stephen Hawking!). It really was a great performance.

(I admit I may be biased because I have been a huge fan of his for many years, and became an even bigger fan after he did Birdsong, which contained the hottest 19+rated scene I have seen in any movie or tv in my life.)

well, we all know what happened to Stephen Hawking (or how he ended up, anyway) but I did find it not totally depressing. I mean, his illness did cause a lot of trouble in his marriage, but a lot of things aren't really straightforward, like his and Jane's relationships with other people. It's based on Jane's own account of those years, so I guess as a film it feels more intimate than the usual biography adaptations.

I love Felicity Jones ever since Like Crazy. She's got a very Audrey Hepburn-like air about her, and her performance is fantastic here. She deserved that Oscar nomination (so did Eddie).

As a fan I want Eddie to sweep it, but realistically, I realise the Academy will probably give it to Michael Keaton over some young British upstart who played a genius (Oscar wins are decided by campaigns as much as elections, after all).

Hey everybody...happy OT!

I only have one free week left til it's back to school...argh for losing free time to catch kdramas :/

I'm at work now and posting my thoughts on Pride & Prejudice only because I don't think I can post up my thoughts on my other dramas (Pinocchio & Healer) until I get off work...can't write a proper post when I'm doing 10 things at once! ;)

Pride & Prejudice: Took me long enough, but I actually marathoned through the whole series -- just in time for the finale. The finale left much to be desired for me, and I think the extension was not a good idea (most never turn out well). That being said, Choi Min-soo was awesome. Chief Moon was a bit difficult to warm up to, especially in the beginning...but he grew on me as the eps progressed. I'm glad that he opted to stand up for justice and the ending for him? Argh. Yeol-moo as a character didn't really feel like a lead female should...and I didn't really care that the final eps solely focused on Dong-chi, Chief Moon and the corrupted band of lawyers. And how about it taking nearly the whole series for them to see them in action in court? The court proceedings and how things turned out was a bit confusing (enough so that I rewatched it 3 times) but the overarching storyline of Byul's death was interesting to see out, especially because who would have thought his death was the culmination of all those events.

Random thoughts, have you noticed Korea sexualises men more than women in shows as opposed to American series, its always a guy putting on a shirt or in the shower, brooding. Speaking of which, did anyone notice in YFAS doo min joo was taking a brooding shower with a towel clearly visible , didn't notice the first time I watched it.I'm noticing recent shows don't have these scenes, which is a plus for me,coz it's tired give it a rest.not speaking for everyone on this just me.they are more creativeand unexpected fan service these days, toast for example or a simple hand hold.we could go a whole show without any kissing and still be content.if America could learn from Korea on this aspect it would be great. It's the thing I found most appealing about Korean dramas, that holding hands could be such.a big deal.compared to what I was watching at the time breaking bad, game of thrones,Homeland it was kind of a relief the shows were good but all the unnecessary R rated scenes made me tired.
Variety wise Running man featuring Seo jin was awesome. I love his grumpiness, I think he's the only one in Korea who can get away with it.and also how he was with his niece, cute.
Anyone else have that niggling wish to love kdramas a little less, so you can get some semblance of a life, coz I am, God give me the grace to do it. Im planning on going back to school, I don't see how I'll be able to concentrate if shows like healer keep popping up.
Forgive me for any grammatical error. Using my phone.

@k lava--

Yes, it hasn't escaped me how k-dramas never fail to shoot the male leads in full-ab-glory, either taking a shower or jumping into a pool or taking off their shirts.. Last night, one episode of Master's Sun had So Ji-Sub taking off his coat, with his shirt still on underneath, and I found the mere hint of abs underneath to be quite a lot sexier than full exposure. (That said, I'm guilty of oogling, too, when given the latter.)

Still, I do agree that American shows make kisses/sex less meaningful, dispensable, and all that.

In Secret Love Affair, Hye Won has her own shower scene, which is quite rare in K-dramas, no? If you haven't watched this show, I'd say it is the sexiest drama I've watched in a long long long time... The chemistry between the leads is undeniably magnetic, compelling,...sexy beyond words. I've paid this show so much lip service already, but I still feel like I haven't been able to do it full justice.

Maybe combined with the end/start of the year, too, it is especially difficult to let go. It's hard to get revved up when the former year ended with such a great kdrama. Same thing happened with YFAS and IHYV, the old year goes out with a kdrama bang, and the new year is lacking which equals a double sense of loss. This year, it is Misaeng. Somehow Misaeng let me go easier, as if being satisfied with it from start to finish, and its story or ordinary life wasn't as jolting for me. But I can sense the emptiness you and others express, and I know - that kdrama black hole emptiness in the heart calling Misaeng~~~ {{{{echo}}}}~~~~

Hanzawa Naoki by Naoto Sakai. Hanzawa is not a newbie but he is in mid ranking office worker in a big bank( I guess I can call him a banker). In the drama he was set up to fall so he needs to pull his all might to fight back to remain his position. The actors are great and the story is gripping. This drama is based on manga just like Misaeng. The drama got the highest rating in Japan.
While real Siwan seems to be very much like Jang Geu-rae, I think the real personality of Naoto Sakai is different from the character he played. so I enjoyed watching Naoto Sakai's true acting skills. Siwan is very good as Jang Geu rae, no doubt about it. But Sakai is much older thus more experienced actor. In Hanzawa Naoki, there are some interesting characters who were played by relatively unknown actors, I thought. But it turned out that they are actually known in theatre in stead of on TV so they have very good acting chop.

Candy Candy was a popular japanese animation show during the 70's that eventually was licensed to different parts of Asia, and apparently to Latin America as well. I did watch the series for a bit during the 80s when it was shown in my country but am very hazy on the details now. I grew up watching different soap operas and telenovelas so I can see why this show has so much appeal to a lot of viewers.

I initially did not connect the term to the series when Master's Sun alluded to it at first, and then found out thru some basic googling that it does refer to the show. Basically the main character, Candy, was an orphan who was adopted by a rich family, faced obstacles from rich people and was able to land herself a rich guy... twice. While keeping her cheerful and optimistic personality and positive spirit! Here's the plot summary from wiki.
