Lee Min-ki and Yeo Jin-gu escape the asylum in Shoot My Heart

Well who’s gonna say no to heartwarming bromance? I was interested when the casting for this movie was first announced, but the teasers and stills are giving it a Miracle of Cell No. 7-vibe that makes me look forward to it all the more. Shoot My Heart is a coming-of-age comedy that stars Lee Min-ki (For the Emperor) and Yeo Jin-gu (Hwa-yi) as roomies at a mental hospital who form a quirky friendship and help each other in a big escape plan, healing each other’s wounds in the process.

Shoot My Heart is based on an award-winning novel and stars Lee Min-ki as a chaebol heir who finds himself imprisoned in a psychiatric ward one day without warning, without reason. It’s a scheme to cut him out of the family inheritance, but he’s powerless to do anything about it, and spends his days slowly growing mad because he isn’t mad. He’s singularly obsessed with escaping, for obvious reasons, and is described as a “ticking time bomb.”

Yeo Jin-gu, on the other hand, is the “model patient,” who quietly goes about his business and follows all the rules. He’s been in and out of mental hospitals for six years, following his mother’s suicide. He’s a skittish young man whose first instinct in any situation is to hide, but when he gets paired with Lee Min-ki as roommates, his peaceful life gets turned upside-down.

Their characters are the same age, which I’m assuming must be important to the story, because if I had cast two actors twelve years apart in real life, I’d have made one of them a hyung. Anyway, Lee Min-ki’s boisterous character takes an immediate liking to his new roommate, calling him Miss Lee and getting him to bond with the rest of the hospital’s residents (Kim Jung-tae, Kim Ki-chun, Shin Gu), much to Yeo Jin-gu’s ire.

But they develop a genuine friendship, and they hatch an escape plan to reclaim their lost identities and their youth. The movie is about a healing bromance between a sane person who appears crazy (Lee Min-ki) and a crazy person who appears sane (Yeo Jin-gu), and their humorous approach to dealing with gut-wrenching pain. There’s a lot of praise for the book, and with a cast like this, I can’t wait to see the adaptation.

Shoot My Heart premieres in theaters January 28.

I'm glad it's not as taboo anymore but, mental illness in Korea is still portrayed a lot softer and much less realistic then what you would see on international TV. It does bother me a lot, how people with mental illness in Korean TV, are often very lovable, normal characters that have just a bit of a quirk. Its no wonder that theirs such a stigma to mental illness in Korea when the general public have no realistic experience of it.

I am actually really looking foreword to this movie, but I do hope in the future mental illness can be portrayed in a realistic way and not just used as a trend.

I have been dying to see this ever since it was cast. Two of my favorite actors and a premise that sounds enjoyable and rife with opportunities to show those acting chops. Can't wait!

Sounds awesome... especially with that cast. Although Hwayi wasn't a too interesting movie, Yeo Jin-gu was wonderful in it and as for Lee Min-ki... I've had a soft spot for him since his rocking SUFBB cameo!

Loving these screenshots too.

Now this just reminded me that Lee Min-ki is still in the army for the next year :(

Loved him in literally everything I've seen him in, though he does seem to have an affinity for roles where he's a bit (or a lot) crazy. Looks like that's literal in this case!

This sounds like something I would write so I'm in. Also a good line up. Also, GI CHUL! Is Sad Popsicle a good guy here? I hope it's slightly less weird than I'm a Cyborg... because that scared me a bit.

SO AWESOME.

(And also funny that Lee Min-ki is the "sane" patient but the one looking mighty unhinged during the whole trailer.)

I bet we'll cry buckets at the end though. It's giving me Miracle in Cell 7 vibes... :|

Well, it's called Shoot My Heart, so it would be an appropriate name for something like Miracle in Cell 7. (I will never get over my rage at that movie for what it did to me . . . )

I'll wait until it's out and subbed and if people call it 'heartwarming' I'll know to stay away because that means sadness and death.

Korean movie poster with brightly lit poster immediately makes me think "oh there will be a death in this movie."

They may be smiling, it will have cute/funny moments...but if there is a sunny poster - you can bet your good looking mental patients that someone will die. They go for the straight for the heart-tears, these k-movies. T__________________T (crying on the inside already)

OH MY GOSH! My first question was: "will somebody die?"

Almost every Korean movie I have taken my daughter to either someone has died or it was a gangster movie. (in which there is always lots of death and dismemberment, always)

"Please Mom tell me it is not a gangster movie!"
Fortunately the last movie we saw was The Con Artists" which had no gangsters and *spoiler* (never mind)

She LOVED The Con Artists. absofreakinglutly LOVED IT.

Hope they plan to show this in the States ASAP. I love Lee Min-ki.

Umm, Girlfriday's description of the movie sounds more exciting than the trailer itself. All the editing, captions, and background music look very dizzying.

I know Yeo Jingoo isn't baby-faced and can pass off being older, but LOL it's not convincing when he's next to Lee Minki, who finally looks his age now unlike a few years back when he was baby-faced.

Buuuuut I can't wait for this movie. Seems like the type I go nuts over.

speaking from what I know, medication for mental illness can often cause premature aging (if they use meds here, that is). Not to mention the stress the guy is under from being wrongly shut away.....

Is Lee Min Ki in army now? I seriously hope he does a drama after he's finished his army. I love him so much and to this date, I am still pissed at his death on Shut up Flower boy band.

Other project I have watched of him is Chilling romance and my god, he is so perfect with awesome acting skills. I love you oppa although I may not be your hardcore fan. But I do think of you every now and then :)

the definitely dont look like they're of same age lol.

i don't say no to anything with yjg, even with that hideous hair, so i'll be watching out for this. i'm a sucker for comedy/drama korean movies (those with this kind of vibe). they always hit the spot.

What is that picture, it looks like the one guy's head sprouted out of the other guy's shoulder, the more I stare at it the less sense it makes

Sounds good; pity I never get to watch any of the Korean films that draw my attention. By the time they get released or become available online with subtitles, the appeal is lost. I really should dig up a few films that I've always wanted to watch, lol but I wouldn't know where to begin - the names escape me! What would beanies recommend?

Only the other day I was wondering about Lee Min Ki. Have a soft corner for him since Dal Ja's spring and I really really like you were among the first dramas that I watched. Thank-God he is back. would love to see him in a good rom-com or action drama very soon.
