Lee Jun-hyuk nabs leading man role for weekend drama Bluebird’s House
by javabeans
I have good news and some… well, you-decide-if-it’s-good news: Lee Jun-hyuk (My Spring Days) has picked his next project, and he’ll take the leading role (finally!) in KBS’s upcoming weekend drama Bluebird’s House (…sigh). I have nothing against weekend dramas (and have in fact watched an oddly high number of them), but let’s just say I’ve been itching for Lee Jun-hyuk to be the leading character of a drama I could get excited about, and this puts us at one for two.
KBS weekend dramas tend to be about multigenerational families, but Bluebird’s House is aiming a bit younger, depicting the plight of modern Korea’s youthful generation as they fight to make it in a cutthroat job market. (I suppose Misaeng didn’t invent that conceit so it doesn’t have the monopoly on those stories, though I wonder if other dramas will benefit from jumping on the bandwagon or suffer by comparison.)
Lee Jun-hyuk’s leading character is a “rock-solid” and reliable young man who brims with confidence, but in the wake of his father’s death, he’s faced with newfound hardships and struggles to stand on his feet in the super-competitive rat race. But it’s thanks to a family “with whom he doesn’t share a drop of blood” that he’ll help heal those scars.
Joining him in the cast are a couple more up-and-comers, with Lee Sang-yub (Would You Give Love Away) and Kyung Su-jin (Plus Nine Boys, Shark) both snagging main roles as well. Kyung plays a young woman with a bright personality, which should suit her just fine, while Lee Sang-yub plays a headstrong young man with a contentious relationship with his father (played by Chun Ho-jin).
Lee Jun-hyuk’s last foray on a KBS weekend series was the hit 2010 family drama Three Brothers, which I found really aggravating except for all the scenes he was in (he had a cute romance and a charming character as the maknae brother, though I wanted to knock his hyungs’ heads together most of the time). He’s done more serious stuff since then (Equator Man, City Hunter), and while I think he’s quite good at that, I wouldn’t mind seeing him be cute and endearing again.
Writing is Choi Hyun-kyung of A Million Roses and As Much as Heaven and Earth, while the director is PD Ji Byung-hyun of Hot-Blooded Salesman and Big (I groaned at that until I recalled that Big was quite lovely to look at, and shot well; it was the story that was a mess). Bluebird’s House will follow What’s With This Family and premieres on February 21.

Kyung Su-jin, I did enjoy her in Nine Boys, although I dropped the drama. I liked her as the gangsterette Da-mi in Secret Love Affair.

That's the show Kyung Su-jin was considering, I hope she accepts.
This is only great news btw, ignoring the fact that it's a weekender... I am very excited for Lee Jun-hyuk leading a drama after his return from military service, unfortunately I couldn't get into My Spring Days, mainly because he was underused as a hapless second lead.

For clarity. Is he helping a family heal their scars or are they helping him? I'd imagine the latter, so a typo?
I like this cast a lot and am happy they're getting lead roles, even if it's a weekend drama. Hopefully this'll garner good attention and ratings that will propel them into prime time. :)

He was the second best part of City Hunter, right after Bad Daddy. Glad he's finally getting a lead role.

Me too -- I hated to drop My Spring Days because I like him (loved him in City Hunter), but I got to hate it after all the standard tropes came into play. Still hope he ended up back with the other girl though.

I loved him City Hunter and Equator Man and was sorry that I had to skip out on My Spring Days. Personally I wish he'd do an anti-hero or an awesome villain. I really liked his twisted but conflicted EM character he stole the show from Uhmforce sometimes. But I'm glad he has a lead role though. I hope this will be the first of many.

Anti hero is best for him. He shines so good in characters where his moral compass is shaded a tinge blacker as opposed to where his image is shaded prestinre. The dychotomy of it is always good.
Anyway everytime i see him, he always remind me of one of my fave psycho players kim kang woo.... they have the same aura....

I really like all three cast members, and as long as this isn't another Wang Family I'm good with it (KBS' current weekend offering, What's With This Family, is pretty solid too, and an enjoyable, relatively makjang-free watch).
But speaking of employment and the challenges of finding work for young people, it's been a running theme in quite a few dramas for a while now - KBS weekend dramas alone had Wang Family, Lee Soon-shin, and now What's With This Family have characters with employment issues, then there was Miss Korea, and cable had Surplus Princess and Misaeng last year..
I'll still take struggling-for-employment youth over chaebols any day.

Unfortunately the Lee Sang Yeob - Chun Ho Jin duo are a chaebol family. There is no escape from chaebol angst in weekend dramas.
But, on the bright side, CHAE SOO BIN!!!! She's going to look gorgeous with Lee Joon Hyuk.

I love Lee Jun-hyuk, so will give a try. Cheer up, JB, maybe he'll pick up a guitar and sing Geudaega in one of the episodes.

I've been at the stage where I refused to see him in anything until he got a lead role, but I'm apprehensive for the same reasons as you are. I'll give it a try though.
LJH is worth it as a lead for a try.

Lee Jun-hyuk is always wonderful. ....... He was particularly memorable in Equator Man, I thought.
Glad to know he'll be in a lead role this time.
By the way, truer words couldn't be written regarding the drama Three Brothers! ....... I never watched the whole thing, just bits and pieces because some of the characters were so annoying. However, the only saving it time and time again were the scenes with Lee Jun-hyuk.

Why are there not English subtitles?!!!! This has not happened before on KBS weekend dramas. My Korean husband won't watch if I cannot understand and I unfortunately don't speak Korean.
