K-drama remakes announced for In Time With You, Chinese Style Divorce

Well, the remake trend surely isn’t going away, and two more overseas properties have been snapped up for Korean drama remakes: Taiwanese drama In Time With You and Chinese series Chinese Style Divorce. Both will be produced by I Will Media, as announced by the production house on December 22, and are looking at recent Taiwanese-drama-remake success stories Fated To Love You and Witch’s Romance to hopefully set them up for another hit remake.

In Time With You told the story of a hero and heroine who were longtime friends on the cusp of turning 30 who eventually came to realize their feelings for each other. The timing had always worked against them as they’d dated other people, and their romantic developments were told in a realistic, poignant way that made the drama a popular hit when it aired in 2011. Writing the Korean remake will be Min Hyo-jung, whose credits include Hallyu hit Full House (itself an adaptation from a manhwa) and Attic Cat (both of which, incidentally, helped spark the trend of cohabitation rom-coms in dramaland).

Chinese Style Divorce is an older title, dating back to 2004, and was itself an adaptation of a Chinese novel; the writer of the book, Wang Hai Ling, also scripted the television series. The well-received show was a human drama that dealt with the inner lives, conflicts, and emotional struggles of its main characters, examining contemporary Chinese society and issues through stories of marriage and divorce.

The two projects are still in early production stages so no casting news is afoot, and both are big enough titles that we can expect a certain amount of interest and scrutiny in how the remakes will turn out. This kind of buzz so often doesn’t end well, but I suppose there are enough times when the new version does a creditable job that hope remains everlasting. For instance, Cantabile Tomorrow suffered from constant comparisons to its original series, but Fated To Love You pulled out a pretty solid remake earlier this year. Personally I prefer when the remake is allowed to slide under the radar—as with Liar Game and Witch’s Romance managed—which gives it a chance to pleasantly surprise us.

The production company behind the two remakes was responsible for JTBC’s medical drama Syndrome (which underperformed its expectations), MBC’s weekend drama Would You Give Love Away (which was modestly successful), the melodrama When a Man Loves (which I could have done without), and KBS’s currently running daily Sweet Lie (which seems to be doing okay). That’s a pretty wide spread so I’m not quite sure to expect; we’ll have to see how the end product turns out, I suppose. Both dramas are aiming for broadcast runs in the latter half of 2015.

In Time With You was beautifully crafted..something I hadn't seen in Taiwanese dramas for a while when it came out- of course Ariel Lin's work was stellar and lent a hand to making it a hit....praying this one isn't ruined with a remake.

I suggest everyone to check out the Taiwanese version by the way!

I would heartily agree, and add that Chen Bolin is perfect as the delightfully normal (when it comes to dramas) as her best pal. He's so attractive in this role because he's so genuine, so believable as a real person. He and Ariel do some good work together.

I hope that they manage to cast actors with comparable credibility.

Yes, Chen Bolin. Daren character is perfect yet imperfect. Ariel lin was good too, but i think, Bolin got my praise more, hehe.. but both did great job together..

suddenly, Woobin and ji Chang Wook's name come to my mind.. Daren on them.. emm.. maybe im just biased :)

I agree! ITWY was easily relatable and really realistic. Ariel Lin's character wasn't the typical perky heroine so I hope they wouldn't change that. Looking forward to the casting.

Couldn't agree more. I loved it so much I ended up fansubbing a decent chunk of it on Viki and I've never done that ever so I feel weirdly possessive about it!

I hope they'll leave it subtle and restrained without turning the male lead into too ridiculous a noble idiot... the cast would need to be perfect to beat the original!

Bolin was pure perfection as Li Da Ren!!!! ♡ I wonder who they will pick as his Korean counterpart ? Also Ariel Lin is one of my favorite actress so I hope whoever gets the role brings as much awesomeness as she did.
I am optimistic specially after the brillantly made remake of FTLY (Which I ended up loving more than the original T version). *Fingers and toes crossed*

In Time With You is such a good drama and I loved Ariel and Bolin Chen in it. Hopefully the kdrama remake is successful! It has big shoes to fill.

But I have one request... Can they please tone down second lead actress? The one that goes "Da Ren Geeeeeeeeeeeee~~~~~" every time she's on screen. I can't stand her skin crawling aegyo LOL

Required fields are marked *

Never meant it as an insult, sorry if it sounded that way. This time of the month, you know. But I completely disagree about Han Hyo Joo being promising, she has been in the industry for years and her acting is still mediocre at best. Song Jae Rim is (very) slowly improving, but he is not nearly on the same level as Bolin Chen. ITWY is really not your typical rom-com, it's character driven, not plot driven. That's why passable actors just won't cut it, you need actors with solid skills.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Very well put. Agreeing with you totally. BTW, all this Song Jae Rim business... yes he's charming and cute but has he even had a role yet that gave him chance to act much? I hope with everyone else that he'll become a great leading man or fantastic supporting player someday but really, there's a difference between being adorable in a reality show and having the skill to carry a good role.

0

OH. I, in no way, think Song Jae-Rim or Han Hyo-joo should be cast. I'm not personally big fans of either. That's why I did actually say I agreed with you. ITWY is one of my all-time favorite dramas so, believe me, I know.

My experience with Han Hyo-joo is very limited actually, but I can, at least, understand that people like her for more than her looks and same with Song Jae-rim (he has some charisma, but not nearly the right kind for this character). In the end, I'm actually the last person who can say whether their promising or not. My point was more that it was a bit unfair to assume that the reasons this person picked them were shallow. But if you didn't really mean it that way, it's all good :)

Now, this made me come out of hibernation.

In Time With You was a phenomenon because it was superbly scripted, magnificently acted and wonderfully directed. Ariel Lin and Bolin Chen brought so much life to Xiang Qin and Da Ren that you don't know where the characters ended and the real actors begin.

The dialogues were stark, direct to the point and simple but gosh if it does not hit you right in the feels.

To me, this is one of those tdramas that is of quality and substance which deviates from the slapstick-y, cliched, overacted tdrama norm and here's hoping that the remake will manage to wow the socks off its viewers as much as the original did.

Don't let me down Korea!

(Now, if only they can cast Han Groo as the straight shooting, independent, no holds barred Xiang Qin and Lee Seunggi as the lovestruck, wear my heart on my sleeves and the boy whom you'd love to take home to momma Da Ren in this k-version, my life would be complete).

Required fields are marked *

Haha. You mean Chen You Qing? Xiang Qin was Ariel Lins's character in the It Started With a Kiss series.

Despite that, I agree with what you said about the drama and the characters. Their characters bond/connection in the show was such a thing of envy for me (even if it were without the romance aspect). They practically finish each others sentences for goodness sake!

My only gripe about the drama was that they spend wayyyy to much time on the return of cheating ex-bf and let our Da Ren did a lot of silently suffering.

But it hurt so good...Is it weird for me to say that I enjoyed watching them both suffer? I am just so used to ridiculous 'nobel idiocy' break-ups, it was like a breath of fresh air to watch a relationship that developed it a different way. Even though I wanted to strangle Xiang Qin at times.

Its a definite NO to Lee Seunggi and Han Groo.

Lee Seunggi does not have the caliber to play such a character, most of his characters thus far has been childish and hotheaded.

DaRen is a simple and quiet man, who knows when a girl is on her monthlys and smiles gently at everyone but You Qing. He is your typical 2nd lead character that often does not get the girl and his biggest problem was his own timid self.

Not to mention both SeungGi and Han Groo are way too young for the role.

Both Da Ren and You Qing are 30, it was the running theme of the show, if you lower the age bracket than we're looking at a different story altogether.

I disagree with you. I find lee seung gi suitable for this role. His characters are definitely not always hot headed and childish. In his recent drama 'You are all surrounded', his character proved to be quiet and level headed most of the time. Most importantly, he has a soft personality that gives off a 'puppy' vibe, that's why in dramaland, many of us nicknamed him puppy. He is very suitable for the impactful scene where da ren wrote a note to you qing before her supposed marriage under the heavy rain. Lee seung gi had proved himself worthy in his portrayal of such characters similar to lee da ren.

As for han groo, well, I have no doubts that she is a potential actress after watching her drama 'Marriage not dating', but I can't say for sure that she has the ability to pull of you qing's maturity, as, like what you said, she may be too young.

Frankly i dont like the idea of a Korean remake In Time with You. If its not done by a great cable creating team by the likes JTBC Secret Love Affair type team. Generic creators with daily dramas can hardly capture the realistic, poignant great romance story that is In Time With You.

Remake decent crack dramas like Fated in Love with You and My Queen is one thing but In Time with You is too good for half hearted remake.....

I am hoping for the same production team of 'Misaeng' or 'Reply 1997' to take over this remake, because they have the ability to bring out the subtle and realistic messages and relationships 'In time with you' have.

I hope this remake don't land into the hands of the Big3, as I am afraid they will emphasise too much on the romance between the leads and forgo the subtleness and family of the original, like what they did for 'Fated to love you'.

In Time With You was not a drama but a work of art. Somehow I cringe at this news as I can't imagine anyone else playing Chen You Qing and Li Da Ren. Everything from the script to the production to the acting was perfected in a way that I'd never expect from a TW drama. At this point, it seems like the only way left to go would be downhill. I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but I don't think I'll be checking this out until I'm sure I won't be disappointed from the raving reviews.

Required fields are marked *

Yesss!

Yoo Yeon Seok has Chilbongie (and also that pathetic, crushed best friend in Toy's Three People MV) in his resume so it is very easy to imagine him as Li Da Ren.

He can do those falling in love, longing and pained looks so convincingly (he broke my heart ;____;).

I can already imagine him in the scene where he'd rush to console You Qing when she was lied to by the Luhan lookalike guy, and the glorious 'bed scene' after (squeee!). Plus he is in the same age bracket as Li Da Ren's character.

and Kang So Ra as You Qing? Yessss, yesss, yessss! *_____* what a perfect OTP it would be!

(Excuse and pardon me for this YYS appreciation essay, non fans. I just cannot contain my feels when it comes to him, lol. YYS, come back to drama, juseyo!) And I know it very well that this kind of dream casting will never happen, too. Sobs.

I thought I was the only one rooting for Kang Sora as You Qing!! Glad I read the comments. Though I'll give YYS a chance as Li Daren, I think the role should be given to an actor with a less-hype, if possible, background. So that, the viewer will see him as Li Daren and will not relate or compare him to his previous characters. We need a pure Korean Li Daren version.

I haven't commented here in a while but my love for ITwY is forcing me to speak out. The original series was a lovely little gem that showed me that not all t-dramas are cliche idol-ridden ratings grabbers. And Bolin Chen broke my heart in that role. So to say I'm hesitant about any adaptation is an understatement to say the least.

I worry that these producers will force unnecessary conflict into what should remain a slice-of-life series. Director Winnie knew how to let scenes breathe and let visuals speak volumes the way dialogue often can't. Given their track record, it seems likely that the new producers will allow spectacle triumph over substance.

Please, for the love of dramas, someone protect Da Ren gege!

This comment is it. Most of the other comments on this page only spoke about Ariel Lin and Bolin Chen being the stars of ITWY, and yes, they put in stellar performances, but really, if it wasn't for director Winnie, ITWY would have been a completely different TV show.

The combination of the direction, the script, and the actors made ITWY a real stand-out gem among Taiwanese dramas, and I think any remake of it will find it difficult to top it because of how lucky it got with all three aspects.

In Time with You is one of very few Taiwanese dramas that I can stomach (aka Director Winnie's work). Unlike some dramas that should never have been remade in the first place e.g. Nodame Cantabile, I think this one can really work if they choose a decent PD.

O lord, I can't even imagine who they could possibly cast in the Korean version of ITWY that would be right for the complex characterizations of Li Da Ren and Chen You Ching. Not to mention being able to deliver them with the poignancy and subtlety of Ariel and Bolin. This was a one of a kind Tdrama and the only one that I can possible say was not a guilty pleasure. I'm already cringing at the choice of the script writer, the writer from Full House?! really??. That show was riddled with plotholes. The only writer I can think of that can even come close to creating something similar in terms of the mood of the drama would Park Yeon Seon who wrote Alone in Love, White Christmas, Evasive enquiry agency etc

I have to agree about the writer. I always 'wanted' to enjoy her work (Kim Rae Won?! In a cohabitation drama?!, Rain?! In another cohabitation drama?! Ah, it should have been great...). But I just never really have.

That said, I think there are plenty of Korean actors that could pull off the characters if the writing and directing happen to hold up. The problem would be, well, them actually getting cast.

I LOVE Park Yeon Seon. I really really hope we have another drama from her soon!!!

Yes, definitely watch ITWY! It remains the only drama I've rewatched. And truth be told, the story of almost-lover-best-friends and turning 30 is pretty universal and won't get old. ITWY is my favorite drama ever. It is beautifully written, acted, and directed. Ariel Lin and Bolin Chen are absolutely stellar and the direction is thoughtful and lovely. I'm really not too thrilled about the fact that it's getting adapted.

It is mostly drama-free in a way I've yet to see 95% of K-dramas be. Chen You Qing and Li Da Ren are also pretty special as protagonists. You Qing is mature--the ambitious businesswoman who feels a little weird about being 30. At the same time, she's not as one-dimensional as I've seen career women be, where they're soo icy and our puppy male lead brings them back to life. She's vulnerable, emotional, fun, sweet, bossy. And Li Da Ren plays the friend who's in sort of a denial about his feelings for her, a total puppy (I only see this in noona romances).

Even the supporting cast (maybe save Maggie) is not annoying. There's no icy, rich girl/guy chaebol second lead. This drama had so much warmth and heart and dimension. Nearly every k-drama adaptation of 2014 has been a miss, and I'm not really looking forward to my favorite drama being turned into a mess. I'll try and remain optimistic.

For Chen You Qing, I think someone who doesn't do too much aegyo, who's authoritative but likable would be good. Kim So-yeon can pull it off.

For Li Da Ren, maybe Lee Seunggi, or Yoo Yeon-seok.

Okay, thinking back, I modify Yoo Yeon-seok for Jung Woo. Yoo Yeon-seok's pretty boy-ness doesn't quite suit Li Da Ren and Jung Woo is as natural an actor as Bolin. He can pull it off.

I LOVED ITWY it was the first and only Taiwanese drama that I actually marathoned and wanted to watch it through. Ariel as Chen You Qing and Bolin as Li Da Ren were so perfect, both together and individually! And the side characters were also all quite good and realistic.
Kdrama please please do not ruin it - ITWY is so popular that people will definitely compare it to the original, and it's hard to surpass or reach the awesomeness that it was.

Wow, everyone seems to love In Time with You unconditionally.

I liked the basic premise and it's a better TW-drama than many, but by the end Ariel's character annoyed the hell out of me (memories of her ISWAK character didn't help) and Bolin's just badly needed a backbone. Still think she didn't deserve such a good guy like him. Mostly, the drama dragged towards the end, I would have liked it much better if it hadn't (I could have done without a couple of specific scene – that bizarre wedding night?!?!?!).

Perfectly suited for a remake though – the premise & character types & many details can easily be carried over to a Korean context. More of a question of the right casting I'd say.

Every time people praise In Time With You to the high heavens, I always think "really?" because Chen You Qing and Li Da Ren were the most annoying characters. She was self-centered, and he was a coward. It took him 15 years to confess, and she did not deserve him for any of those years. When this aired, everyone wanted their own Li Da Ren in real life, but he annoyed me more than she annoyed me. Among the overwhelming love for this drama, I was relieved I wasn't alone with my dislike. Koala's rants and Couch Kimchi's snarky comments aligned with my feelings. The last episode was nothing but fanservice, which was fine, but for being in love with each other since high school, they sure were awkward once they actually got together (that cringey wedding night; I wondered why they hadn't slept together before they got married).

I hate it when people trying to convince me to love or like someone (like Lee Min Ho or Park Shin Hye) or something (like BOF and ISWAK).

So, I salute you for standing on what you believe is right. (Don't let the mainstream take your personal taste)

Well, I love ITWY, and you don't. It's me and it's YOU.

I don't think they can remake In Time With You and make it as good as the original. I generally don't like Taiwanese dramas, in fact I've only liked 2 so far, but I hope the cast will be good...

I'm not sure I want a remake of In Time With You. Honestly I think the original was perfection and Bolin Chen was awesome as the forever friendzoned bff.

Interesting. ITWY was really successful although I can't see it being adapted well since it was very simplistic without much dramatics. I'm personally not a fan of it and found the female lead character quite insufferable. Ariel Lin was great but her character - not so much.

Li Da Ren was great though, and I can think of a whole lot of k-actors who can pull off the character with as just as much heart as Bolin did. Hopefully it'll turn out better than the original!

In Time With You was wonderful, I hope you watch the original first, Javabeans! Please do! PLEASE.

I've always had Sung Joon pegged for Li Da Ren in my head. Not only does he have a similar look to Bolin Chen (<3!!) but I think he can pull the character off as well. I think he could if only he doesn't play them as he's been playing his recent roles. Da Ren was a sweetie, but of an entirely different type.

I don't know who could play Chen Yu Qing but I hope it's someone as awesome as Ariel Lin was in that role. That drama is such a gem so whoever takes it on will have to really do well. Directors and script writers included.

I like Sung Joon, but I am sick and tired of him playing guys in his 30s. He looks like a school kid wearing his dad's suit. He is simply too young to play Li Da Ren.

I'm sick of him playing same roles over and over again. His actings also no special.

I really want to see Seo In Guk tackle the Li Da Ren role. He's good looking but not extraordinarily so, and has the warmth and feel of the everyday guy you want to get to know. He's got the acting chops too, but I'd love to see him challenge himself and play a more toned down character from what he usually does.

mmm, I'm not too fond of this idea either, mostly because I loved the directing from this show. It was a very good show, for the reasons that have been reiterated in previous comments. The characters themselves aren't that much different from the usual main characters you see in Korean dramas either.

This is the first time I've seen the original of a remake. I'm already a little concerned because while I love kdrama more than tdrama, I've always considered In Time With You to be flawless. Not only that, it had far more wiggle room with adult subject matter than a kdrama does. She's a grown woman who sleeps with her grown man boyfriend even though it's clear he is not the OTP. The only kdrama's I can think of where that happened were the I Need Romance series. I hope it airs on cable so they don't have to sanitize it.

Can somebody reunite Song Hye Kyo and Rain please??

I haven't watched the original, so I didn't know how the original characters but I wish the actors and the writer will do justice to the original drama.

Love love ITWY. Ariel and Bolin acting was effortless. I don't have high hopes for this remake because the chemistry and acting of both actors were superb. Love their interactions.

I jumped on the In Time With You hypewagon sometime back and thought it was just okay. I can see how it was tonally very different from other TW dramas and why it might be popular. But it bored me out after a while. Kinda felt like it could have ended a few episodes before it did.

I looooved "In Time with You"! I'm looking forward to see the Korean version of it.

As for the leads... maybe Gong Yoo and Im Joo Eun?

I watched ITWY after reading praises about it on JB's article on remakes. And boy, did I love it! I rewatched it quite a few times in fact. So much so that I am legitimately worried about the casting of the korean remake. Some of the names suggested are great actors like GY and LJW but they have this lived a full life feel to them that Li Da Ren never had. He was this positive, good, warm person but was also in his nature to be whipped around stronger women and they were better off for it. He understood them deeply and it came across brilliantly with a touch a naivety and a lot of charm.
And I do hope they cast a fantastic actress not just someone who is pretty.

"story of a hero and heroine who were longtime friends on the cusp of turning 30 who eventually came to realize their feelings for each other. The timing had always worked against them as they’d dated other people, and their romantic developments were told in a realistic, poignant way ......."

reminds me of '9 ends 2 outs' by Soo Ae and Lee Jung Jin that was aired in 2007

I have only 3 taiwanese dramas that i love to pieces which are In Time With You, Autumn Concerto and a distant third.. The pursuit of happiness. Would love to see a korean remake of any of these

How about Soong Joong Ki as Bolin Chen's character as a post-army comeback role?

I don't watch too many TW dramas, but I did watch this one, and I think I liked it. I remembered one of the pivotal scenes had something to do with rain but not everything. I guess it was different from other TW dramas in that it wasn't that wacky.

Still, I don't remember a lot about it and I saw it pretty recently, at least 2012 or 2013 instead of when it came out. So, I wouldn't mind a remake but I don't remember it having any interesting plot points either. It was an ensemble cast of people who interacted through the years and two of them that should have been together romantically instead became best friends because they never were on the same track at the same time. Should be easy to replicate, successfully though, could be another matter.

Not the writer of Full House and Attic Cat, please. If I was the producer, I'd get the writers of Coffee Prince, Soulmate, 9 Ends 2 Outs, Marriage Not Dating and Coffee House. And I'll broadcast it on cable.

In Time With You is a character-driven and slice-of-life drama. I love ITWY even though there were times when I hated Li Da Ren and Chen Yu Qing. But that's what makes a show perfect. Flawed and relatable characters.

I don't care if the producers cast an idol as secondary characters--as long as they cast talented A-list actors who can deliver these real and flawed characters well.

Chen Bolin want A-lister before ITWL, but he had had a good acting reputation before the drama so he was offered the role.

The drama does not need A-list actor as long as it casts a good actor who suits the role.

This. An A-list actor is someone who is really famous and demands a large paycheck. There are so many underated gems in the industry, I see no point casting someone simply because of their name.

Just wanted to say that Chen Bolin was a sweetheart. He actually gifted Ariel's $100000 NTD that whoever gets married first before turning 35, the other person have to gift that amount (a promise made in the drama 'ITWY'). (Side Note: She's getting married on Dec. 24).

I hope the K-version won't butcher the story. Frankly, I'm having a hard time finding any good Korean actor and actress to play Li Da Ren and Cheng You Qing.

Some of these actors are just too young and look too young as well :) The drama begins with our lead turning 30. I just can't see Yoo Seung-ho, Han Groo and Kim Jiwon pulling off 30 as all are a good 8 years or so too young.

Personally, I will not watch the remake of in time with you, unless they pick actors and actresses i like and i know can deliver, because I know it's going to be ruined. In time with you was one of those taiwanese dramas that i watched simply because i was bored but till this day it is the best taiwanese drama in that it is realistic and just so well written, followed by my second fave, In a Good Way:)

Kdramas have this terrible pattern where a drama might start out good but eventually becomes too melodramatic and i'm not here for that when it comes to in a good way. I mean, the drama is melodramatic but it was executed perfectly but im not sure about that happening with the korean remake

Maybe not so much a coincidence (both are great shows) but those two are my favorite TW dramas as well! I think an In Time With You remake would potentially be disastrous but In A Good Way would make for a good one, especially if the producers and writers of Reply series are behind it. They have a very similar feeling and style but all boils down to the casting!

I love love loved In Time With You! I watched that over one of the holiday breaks earlier this year and I remember marathoning it in 2 days. It didn't have any extravagant scenes, complicated plot lines, or anything like that but it spoke to you (or at least it did to me). It was a simple, slice-of-life drama that left the viewer with little parting words at the end of each episode about the heroine's realizations about getting older. I liked those bits and it actually got me a bit worried because I somehow related to the things she said. :)) I'm nowhere near 30 yet but I like this drama's somewhat mature and realistic take on everyday life and relationships.

It's a marriage of the writer, the director and the actors' work that made this click. In fact, I liked it quite a lot that I feel torn about this being remade. Part of me is curious about who they'll cast and how it'll turn out but the other half (the bigger chunk) is worried that they'll just ruin it. This has to be aired on a cable channel. ITWY's style won't work on the big 3 networks where glitz and extravagance is often needed. It's a quiet, simple little show with characters that feel like your friends and neighbors. It gave me the same feel with dramas like Reply 1997, Coffee House, 9e2o, The Pursuit of Happiness, and movies like Sunny and You're the Apple of My Eye --- fairly simple but quite lovely.

I loved In Time With You..... The male lead is the good guy from beginning to end and gets the girl..... The friend who made it out of the friendzone.

For Li Da Ren , I want someone with the same feeling as Chen Bolin....... He was both laid back and charismatic in his role....

As for You Qing, I don't know....

I'm not sure if KSE can pull of sassy alpha female role (I'm her big fan but this needs to be said), but I can totally imagine KB in the sweet best friend who's secretly in love with KSE ^^

The only problem is that they are too young for 30s characters and I think this project would benefit from two 30 something leads with more experience.

They both are a bit young since they 20-somethings but I think KSE can pull off being sassy thanks to WGM (haha). It's just wishful thinking on my part, though. I miss seeing them together onscreen. :)

Why can't korean producers and scriptwriters come up with

their own original korean story instead of remaking and

copying other people works ? We had seen some copycat

versions lately, no talent left in S KOREA ?
