First stylish teaser for KBS’s Spy
by javabeans
KBS has released its first teaser for its spy drama Spy (aptly, if obviously, named), and it looks pretty slick. It’s pretty short, but hits the essentials: Mom Bae Jong-ok is “an ordinary mother,” son Kim Jaejoong is “an ordinary son,” and the drama tells of “their non-ordinary mother-son relationship.”
That’s an understatement, given that Mom is a sleeper spy for North Korea who has lived a mundane life for years before she’s reactivated, and her son is an ace spy working for South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS). Mom’s mission pits her two loyalties against each other: her country or her son?
Neither knows of the other’s status, and in the teaser we see Jaejoong having a commonplace phone conversation with his mother (“I just finished work, I’ll be heading out soon, love you Mom”) while walking down a seedy-looking alley. Moments later his car is hit by a truck driven by cold badass agent (Yoo Oh-sung), who flips through Jaejoong’s wallet to note the family picture inside, then tells him, “Go home, we’ll meet soon enough again.”
So far, so good. My interest is piqued in the premise—it reminds me of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, except without the marital relationship, which now I think of it is an unsettling comparison for a mother-son drama, let’s scratch that—and the teaser is stylish and intriguing. The two writers mostly have a handful of Drama Specials under their belts, as does the director, but as PD Park Hyun-seok also worked on The Princess’s Man (which was wonderfully directed), I feel optimistic about the look and feel of the show.
The big question mark for me is more about the format, because KBS is experimenting with its scheduling by taking the miniseries to Friday nights. Everybody knows that Fridays are no longer a no-man’s land of drama programming thanks to tvN, which has turned out a number of successes in its Friday-Saturday slot, but KBS hasn’t hit upon the right balance yet. High School Love On tried but floundered in its once-a-week schedule, and its already slow momentum was tanked by multiple pre-emptions along the way. JTBC also tried out the slot with Maids, but that show got pulled one episode in after fire destroyed its set and killed a script coordinator; the production is still unsure when it will be able to rebuild and resume filming.
Spy will air two episodes a week, back-to-back on Fridays from 9:30 p.m. through 11:10 p.m.; the episodes will clock in a little shorter than standard prime-time episodes, at 50 minutes each. The drama premieres on January 9.

Well....
This seems interesting!
I'm honestly over North Korean-spyish-storylines since Doctor Stranger. SIGH.

Looks good. Love those colors. Would be kind of cool if a drama kept such a stylized noir look throughout the show like that. I'm not counting on it but it would be really interesting.

I watched it! :D
I was speaking more about the flashier stills, though, with the colored lighting. But it might hurt people's eyes after a while? lol

Looks slick; I'm intrigued. With the new format and shorter episodes I hope that means its tightly written.

I feel like the whole North Korean spy storyline is a little overdone, but this is a pretty new and interesting dynamic. Country or your son? It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. Looking forward to it. And also looking forward to seeing Jaejoong on my screen again.

I thought this teaser hit all the aspects which will make this drama fun and interesting. I love undercover stories, so this will be right my alley. With the two leads being mother and son, I'm hoping for a good story without too much love-triangle-drama. More primetime dramas should be about family love.

Aww now that you mentioned the whole Mr. and Mrs. Smith thing, wouldn't it be interesting tho if this drama were converted into where Jaejoong was actually married instead of against his mother?? haha well just a thought.
I'll keep an eye out for this.... looks good, and tbh I would have watched anyway for Jaejoong xD

This looks interesting. I definitely want to check this out. I've been wanting to watch a korean spy drama. While watching roommate season 2, I've wanted to see Bae Jong-ok in a drama.

I think the once a week can work with a really smart and stylish show, two things HS Love On often was not (and I gave it 7 episodes to hook me). Espionage and Jaejoong, together at last.

Jaejoong looks mighty fine in that first pic - he looks really mature, even with the clean cut, as oppose to his usual boyish charm. Aaah that's who Healer reminded me of, Jaejoong, couldn't quite put my finger on it until I saw this post.
Drama doesn't sound half bad though, even with such an unoriginal title. Never got round to watching his last drama, Triangle, so I'll be sure to tune into this one once it airs.
Looking forward to the new year - I have high hopes!

Hmm...this teaser makes this seem that much more intriguing -- my interest was peaked already with JJ and BJO cast as son & mother. I think I might still tune in, despite my apprehension of casting GSH as female lead (someone with more experience would have been hella better).
The dynamic of choosing between country and family is a new twist that may help me overwrite recent related subject matter drama Doc Stranger from my memory.

I'll be honest, was going to watch for Jaejoong anyway seeing as its his last project before enlistment. I was hopeful for Triangle at the start but seeing how that meant I'll be keeping my expectations low. Crossing my fingers!

I'm actually pretty excited for this one. The cast overall looks very strong, aside from the romantic interest. And some of the camera angles in the preview were very cinema-esque. I have high hopes for this one.

I'm a huge JYJ fan and love all the opportunities the guys get to showcase their talents since they are not allowed on the music and variety programs.
I'm glad to see the improvement from project to project. Being around quality drama veterans has paid off for both Jaejoong and Yoochun. Really looking forward to seeing this one.
