Disaster film Pandora adds Kim Nam-gil, possibly Go Ara
by javabeans
Disaster film Pandora, which began casting a few months ago with Kim Myung-min in a leading role, is finalizing the rest of its cast with the latest news naming Kim Nam-gil (The Pirates) as a confirmed addition and Go Ara (You’re All Surrounded) as a possibility.
Pandora comes from director Park Jung-woo of Deranged, another disaster movie that was a box office hit in 2012, which also starred Kim Myung-min (as well as Moon Jung-hee, who’s also back for Pandora). He’ll play a president who has to deal with leading the nation through crisis when disaster strikes a nuclear power plant, and reportedly had such loyalty to the director that he agreed to the project without reading the script. Given how hardcore Kim Myung-min is about his choices and the amount of work he puts into character analysis, that strikes me as unusual for him, but maybe he just has that much faith in the PD?
Kim Nam-gil will play a man who risks his life to save his family (so, every disaster movie hero ever). He said of the movie, “The moment I read the script, I was captivated by the character of Jae-hyuk, who felt so human. The film genre is also appealing, but I chose to do Pandora because of the message inside the movie and the emotions that you could relate to.” The role that’s currently out to Go Ara (her reps have stated that she’s only received the offer and hasn’t decided on the movie yet) is merely described as a woman Kim Nam-gil loves, but we’ve got little else to go on. Then again, it’s a disaster movie about a nuclear power plant; that’s pretty much all the plot we need to know, right?
Other cast members include Jung Jin-young (Miracle of Cell No. 7), Na Moon-hee (Miss Granny) and Kim Dae-myung (Misaeng). Pandora will wrap up its casting soon and plans to begin filming early next year.

***SPOILER WARNING ABOUT KIM NAM-GIL STUFF***
Sometimes, I wonder if he checks just the end of the script and goes, "Oh goody, the lead is gonna die. Sign me up for this project!"

and a powerful agency, don't forget. She was able to keep getting lead roles in all the years before Answer Me 1994 (despite less than stellar reviews for acting) mainly because she was with SM, and that agency goes all out scoring leads for its idols and the handful of actors they have that aren't under the SM C&C division.

sorry, but the girl did not have any drama for 4 years before R94
She got lead roles before not because of SM, but because her debut drama was big hit in Korea.
When she was busy pre 2009, SM wasnt as powerful as today.

Me neither and I don't even find her to be pretty her eyes are nice but something about her is off. Oh and she's definitely not ugly, but she's just not what I consider attractive and her acting is very mediocre. She's not thaat bad though let's be real there's a lot worse *cough* shin se kyung *cough* jin se yeon. I Personally prefer park se young or jung so min(He had more chemistry with her than with Han ga in in bad guy)from that age group,or even lee yoo bi.I really hope she doesn't get cast.

What is this comment? Then how did she score highly coveted role in Replay 1994 if not for SM? How do most of SM actors get leading roles left and right? You can say whatever you want about SM but it`s the to-go agency if you want to get to the top faster.

Well, I'm not discounting that but the buzz around her has certainly been more positive since she did Reply 94.
Also I'm not insulting her or anything. I've only seen her in one role (Soonjung Manhwa - she was okay) but I know that she seemed to be generally panned as an actress before Reply 94 came out and now the consensus seems to be "Well, hey, she doesn't totally suck."

Soonjung Manhwa was Lee Yeon-hee, who was largely panned as a bad actress before Gu Family Book and Miss Korea. Go Ara had a better image, though it wasn't until 1994 (and to a lesser extent Pace Maker) that she got taken seriously.

And even after Gu Family Book/Miss Korea it's not like there's a large clamoring fanbase saying that Lee Yeon-Hee is a good actress now, many people still criticize her acting a lot, although she has definitely shown improvement.

Oh, my bad. I always mix those two up because they're both under SM (and seem to be the only non-idol actresses that they put in everything, including MVs, etc). They kind of look alike too. Thanks for the clarification.
I DO NOT HATE GO ARA OR LEE YEON-HEE, JUST FYI. I'm just surprised at how both of their reputations seem to have improved recently upon taking on certain projects (Miss Korea/Reply 1994).

@AJ
That's simply b/c too few viewers have watched MK.
LYH was STELLAR in that role and even better than many actresses who have won "awards" for their acting.

But I agree with this statement. Go Ara, in one BIG break named Reply 1994, can choose among solid options. Kim Nam-gil too, when he outshined Uhm Tae-woong in Queen Seok-deok, according to them. (I SHIP UHM TAE-WOONG YUSHINRANG TIL THE SOLID END!) That was it. The rest is history for Kim Nam-gil!

Isn't that Kim Myung Min also will be acting in this movie? The filming will start next year, means that after KNG movie Dorihwaga wrapped up.
JB, can you write something about Korean The Female FilmMaker Awards or something. I saw pictures of female actors with awards but could not figure out it for what.

I am spazzing a little too. But I fear, in a big disaster movie like this, they might end up not having a single scene together.

Wow so much criticism (I don't like to use "hate") for Go Ara. Now i understand why she cried during the pre-AM 1994 interviews. She said she felt typecast in her image as an actress in her teen idol dramas, and couldn't break out of it, and so was very grateful to get a role in AM 1994 where she could.
So I'm happy that she's being offered roles here and there. YAS was just an OK show, not a smash like AM 1994. How her career shapes out from here on out is down to her choices in roles.

I have to watch everything Kim Nam Gil is in.
I think it is that voice. He could sell me shoes chewed up by a dog I think if he wanted to.
