Jin Yi-han headlines weekend drama as pretty boy loser

Heh, Jin Yi-han (Secret Hotel, A New Leaf) usually plays such put-together, gentlemanly types that it ought to be fun to watch him play a loser in a weekend family drama. SBS’s new Saturday-Sunday drama is called The Family Is Coming, and after casting a few secondary roles, Jin Yi-han has signed on to headline the series. It’ll be his FOURTH drama in a year, starting with Empress Ki and taking him basically nonstop through the year in back-to-back projects. All in all it turned out to be a pretty good year for him, despite some of the projects fizzling out, because he was consistently great in them.

The new weekend drama is a family rom-com based on the novel Grandma Is Back, about a grandma who abandoned her family 50 years ago, and suddenly returns one day to distribute a 10-billion-won inheritance to her children and grandchildren. The story will be about the family members’ competition over who gets the inheritance, leading to comic hijinks and eventually growth and maturity for all involved.

Jin Yi-han stars as the leading man who appears to be the average drama hero on the outside: He graduated from a top law school and has the looks to make women’s hearts go pitter-patter. But in reality he’s an unemployed loser who wants to be a creative director (of what, I don’t know). In his twenties, he used to be the confident dreamer who believed in fighting for justice. But now he’s so jaded that he’s the kind of man to just walk past injustice and social problems happening right in front of him, figuring that there’s no point.

Lee Jung-hyun (Roaring Currents, Confucius) has signed on to play a designer, and not much else is known about her character, though I can see Jin Yi-han’s character leaving law to work in design with her, leading to romance. Idols N of VIXX and Sojin of Girl’s Day have been cast in supporting roles, and will have a loveline of their own. N plays a detective who’s the problem-solver of the family, and Sojin plays his love interest. Directing is PD Joo Dong-min of Take Care of Us, Captain, and writing is Kim Shin-hye of Immortal Classic.

The Family Is Coming will follow Modern Farmer on Saturdays and Sundays in January.

Who is another guy that will be another lead. I've read that Lee Jung Jin had been approached for this drama too. Lee Jung Hyun in drama. I don't remember the last time I watched her on TV for acting.

YAY! I love him. His character sounds very entertaining. And I actually really like the description of this drama. Like a lot, considering it's a family drama. Will definitely keep an eye out for this. Optimistic since it's a SBS weekend drama :)

Huh this actually sounds pretty good, not even just his character but the whole plot. And even if its bad, its Jin Yi-han so I know at least he'lll be good in it (I hope his wardrobe in it is better than in MSH 'cause most of the time all the other guys were in trendy suits while he was in too many oddly cloying sweaters). I hope Kim Hae-sook or Yoon Yeo-jung (K2H mom) can be the mom.

i have watched all of his work this year. and has been a fan of him since that drama he did with yoon kye sang years ago (which i can't remember the name now and too tired to google)
i like him but hated his character in secret hotel so much that ive thought of dropping the drama a few times!! not his fault tho, the character development in that drama is all over the place.

so, might check this out. if its any good, i might be able to erase my memory of gu hye young :)

@Dee, It's called Who Are You with YKS and Go Ara... JYH also played a really nasty man to Lee Bo Young in A Thousand Affection or Hooray for Love... A deadpan actor with not much expression...

OH...you just made my day...

I was hoping he will be cast in the Heal Me something 7 personalities drama....
but it might be too early for him to headline a week day drama for the big 3 even though he has the acting chops.

But this is just as good...because I can watch him for at least 3 months on my screen...

He's such a manly and sexy actor... love him!

In spite of his appeal I just could not watch Secret Hotel (too much shrieking) but I am half-way through Empress Ki now and look forward to seeing him in a leading role. Should I watch A New Leaf?

If you want to watch A New Leaf for him, not worth it. But in general, it started well only to be thwarted at the end with episode cuts. Better time could be spent elsewhere IMO.

No regrets about watching A New Leaf…I thoroughly enjoyed it. For me it was time well spent.

A New Leaf stepped outside the mold of your standared kdrama. It managed to make complicated legal issues exciting, it was thought provoking, intellectually appealing, and the writer had the courage to limit the cliched romance trope.

One of the takeaway messages from the drama: Everyday is a new day and indeed life does go on. “…Let go of yesterday’s struggles. – The story of your life has many chapters. One bad chapter doesn’t mean it’s the end… Accept what is, let go of what was and have faith in what could be. Remember, life does not have to be anywhere near perfect to be wonderful in the end.”~Marc & Angel

If you want to watch ANL because you want to see JYH, nevermind....I can barely see him in almost all of the episodes. In the first half of the drama, he was just given at least 2 minutes of screentime which made me disappointed as a fan.

And also, drama towards the ends seems to be rushed or cut.

huhu. true. there were not much of him in that drama. and yes, the drama itself didnt have the typical korean drama storyline. the first half of it was good (i was actually on craving for new episodes each week...for the first 4 or 6 eps...) but it went downhill after that with rushed plot.

A New Leaf is very well done drama. But for me, his role in Empress Ki is definitely meatier than in ANL. At least Tal Tal has something to do in 51 eps (and it's get better in the latter half of EK). While in ANL, he's just sort of second lead and fades into background.
I still love ANL though because of the cast and the story.

On one hand I'm happy he's back on my screen, on the other I'm disappointed that it's not in a mini series. I hate weekenders if they are too long and I'd most likely watch it if JYH is in it. That's how much I like him!

But I do like the sound of his character. On paper, it's very realistic and relatable. I also like the basic premise. I hope it isn't too long and successful as well so JYH next headlines his own weekday drama.

Damn 50 episodes?

But he's in... oh fine, I am watching. :-( He better be worth it here, I wanted to slap his character awake in Secret Hotel and leave his love.
