Hong sisters plan new drama with Best Love PD

It’s back to the work for the busy Hong sisters writing partners—Hong Jung-eun, Hong Mi-ran—who are eyeing a return to MBC for their next series, which would be their tenth drama in ten years. (Who else feels lazy?) Their last drama for MBC was 2011’s Best Love, and this project would reteam them with their PD from that show, Park Hong-kyun.
The series is still in early planning stages and the synopsis has not yet been delivered, but with a star PD onboard (Queen Seon-deok, New Heart) and writers who regularly churn out well-loved ratings hits (Master’s Sun, My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho, You’re Beautiful, Fantasy Couple), MBC’s not likely to pass on the project. They are reportedly looking at a Wednesday-Thursday slot to air in May or June of next year.
Big certainly proved to me that even with a many-years-long streak of churning out one hilarious, zippy rom-com after another, nobody is infallible; a proven hitmaker can always put out a dud at any point. And it’s true that the Hongs’ more recent shows haven’t had my heart quite the way their old ones did. But I appreciate that the Hong sisters keep stretching their boundaries and trying to evolve rather than doing the same show ten times over, and they’ve provided me with so many hours of uproarious entertainment that I will always look upon news of a new project with eagerness.
As for the subject matter—well, there’s no guessing what they’ll choose. They have done a number of shows with supernatural genre twists in recent years (gumihos, ghosts, body swapping), and they’ve got a taste for showbiz meta comedy (idols, K-pop, movie stars), but they’ve also done conventional rom-coms and fusion sageuks, so there’s no telling where their imaginations will take them next. Let’s hope it’s someplace good.

I think that must be the role that turned me off him -- and honestly not his fault -- but no one bothered to hem his pants in that show and it made him look so ridiculous that I've never really been able to see him as leading man material since. Almost in Arang but that show was so slow-moving I gave it up.

LJK is gorgeous but very overrated as an actor for me, don't want him to get a Hong sisters leading role.

well, he's already played second lead in one of their early superhits and has since become a better actor than the leading man of that drama......it wouldn't be a huge stretch.
(but I am afraid of oppa's overacting tendencies getting full rein in a romcom.....at least in stuff like Arang the PD held him back and made him great)

True, but anyone is better than said leading man for me. :P I'm not going to name names because I don't want anyone getting mad at me ehehehhe.
Besides I know LJK is leading material of course, there is no going back from that neither I want it to, it is just that I love the Hong sisters even if sometimes they screw up. I shiver thinking what LJK could have done to the lead in YAB, BL, Big and MS, only because even if these dramas had flaws the casting was sooooooo perfect. In fact the best thing about HS dramas for me is the perfect casting.
I'm eager to meet the LJK of Arang again, but in another show. :)

I do share your concerns about the Hong Sisters brand of humour bringing out the worst of oppa's overacting tendencies, it's a legitimate worry.
I really wonder who the leading lady will be. If they do go for GHJ then it's a three-for-three, amazing.

I didn't like his last drama, though I don't blame LJK. I think that he has grown a lot. Really, once an actor is cast, it is at least partially up to the writer and the director to understand and bring out his strong points.

This is a rumor I've never even heard of. Especially about GHJ. I doubt GHJ will be doing this after working with the writers twice already. Besides, she got really sick of the PD's way of filming the drama during Best Love so I'm surprised that there's even a rumor about her taking the lead for this show.

At the moment, dramas without marquee stars (such as Misaeng or Pride & Prejudice) are pulling in a whole lot bigger ratings than the ones with the likes of Joo Won. Cantabile Tomorrow is a prime example of dramas made possible only by the incestuous industry insiders isolated in a bubble and totally removed from viewers. And the network honchos are finally paying attention. Bottom lines are bottom lines.
Viewers in Korea are voting with their remote controls. Lee Joon Gi may be a mega star but his last opus was not anything anyone would call a blockbuster or even a decent success. Hong Sisters, are you hell bent upon producing same old, same old or are you going to get with the program?

Won the ratings throughout its run and had been immensely viewed in China.
I think your argument shouldn't be based on cast signing alone but also story. Yes Cantabile tomorrow is flopping but that's because people dislike the story. Pinocchio with it's much buzzed about cast IS NOT flopping and that's because the story is good.
Basically what's happening in SK is people are beginning to pay more attention to writig and no longer watch dramas just to see their Oppa's, so even if they cast LJK and the story is good, they will watch

Cantabile Tomorrow is a good drama though. Solid writing, stable story and great actors. The drama is about something more than just beautifull kids wondering around trying resolve their "love" problems.
It's "flopping" (just in ratings) because it is actually makjang-free and has more depth. Thanks god, for that.
Pinocchio however had good first two episodes, but third and fourth were lower quality-wise.
It has nothing to do with the cast, quality of the story or good acting.
Leads from Cantabile Tomorrow are objectvily better actors than the leads from Pinocchio...
Korean drama land is all about public-friendly productions. Out of the expiriance we can speculate that korean viewers love makjang stories with a lot of absurdity. It has nothing to do with final quality of the drama.

the problem with kdrama these day is that when they cast famous Hallyu stars, the drama can sell with big price to China and already earn more than enough profit for the production house ( even before the drama end). Thus, the production house does not care much about the story and domestic rating anymore.
For example: Rain's last drama sold to China at $200 000 per ep before the drama started, even with terrible rating in Korea, the production house earns a lot already.
If kdrama dont fix this problem soon, it has very dark future.
Misaeng or Pride & Prejudice are rare dramas these days which do not have big names, thus these dramas need good plot to attract local viewers.

But Misaeng -- also free of standard tropes -- is doing well. Not everyone who doesn't like TC is looking for chaebols and candies or their favorite actors.
Sometimes it's really as simple as different tastes -- I love shows about music and education and personal growth and all the things TC is about, but really disliked the childishness of the heroine and the antics of the so-called adults. I hung in for 8 long episodes, but that was it. I have no doubt that the writing of the show and its execution have been great (thank you recaps) but I just couldn't muster up the interest to watch more. I didn't care about anybody except the two violinists.

The heroine may be childish at the beginning, but it is part of her growth that you can see in further episodes. She knows it too, that's why she changes.
I find her really amazing. She knows what she wants and she go for it. How many times in the drama we can actually see such a strong female lead? She is not a plaintive girl doing whatever somebody ask her too - even if it's the guy that she likes. She seems like that, but she does not. She fights and is telling her own opinions. Just for that one fact (but there are more) I love this drama.

Even if GHJ would back to small screen next year, I wish she will reunite again with writer Noh ^_^
I would love my gongvely act in more realistic character and story even more after It's Okay It's Love, I wish GHJ get to work with such prepared production again... :)

I need KIM WOO BIN with Park Shin Hye in a drama ASAP. They had burning chemistry in HEIRS ( and I tuned in for LMH, but KWB took my breath away :P ).
If they cast Lee Jun Ki, they need to cast someone like Jung So Min with him, that would be a beautiful pair. Or maybe Yoon Eun Hye. She hasnt done a Hong Sisters drama yet.

now can they please cast good leads like they always do, I would be happy if they got established stars or gave a break to younger leads......(hopefully Kim Seul-gi? Or Lee Yubi?)

I thought I liked him until I saw Secret Hotel, and I decided he's kind of boring. Pretty, but not a ton of charisma. But then, that might just be the show. If he does a funny or smart romcom like the Hong Sisters would churn out, then he might turn me around.

Omg Finally!!! I was getting so impatient all year long specially with the train of horrible dramas we had in 2014.
I totally agree with JB that the recent Hong Sisters drama haven't had my heart like they used to. There was a time when watching their dramas would consume my entire 2 months. If they can recreate the magic they had for You're Beautiful, I'd allow them another year off!
Anyhoo... Can't wait to see who gets casted. I hope I like them because LJK - no thank you. GHJ - yes please!! I'd love Gong Yoo reunite with her in a HS drama that isn't as fail as Big. Or Song Joong-ki if he'll be back by then.

I still have so much inexplicable love for JGS which is why I would kill for him to do this. Yea it's probably gonna be similar to what he's done for the past 716742 projects but at least it will most likely be good. He's too good an actor to waste himself. I still find that so unfortunate.

I would LOVE to see Han Groo in a Hong Sisters drama. She has that quality of being super grounded even in ridiculous situations that is perfect for a Hong Sisters show. Kinda similar to Gong Hyo Jin in that regard.

I'd say Gong Hyo-jin and Han Groo are about as different as it gets. I don't really see how the Hong Sisters can write something non-repetitive for Gong Hyo-jin though, and I think they could do their magic for a more physical comedy role that would fit Han Groo perfectly.

Love, love, love the Hong Sisters! They are so quirky, witty, and smart with their dramas. They know what audiences respond well too and create moments that people remember.
Maybe they could get Choi Jin Hyuk (if he's not off to the army by then), Jung Il Woo (he needs a good project), Joo Won, Lee Min Ho, or Gong Yoo who deserves a redo after doing the disastrous drama Big.
I love Gong Hyo Jin, but if she is signs on this will be her third Hong Sisters drama. I wouldn't mind seeing a different actress take on the drama. Maybe Moon Chae Won, Yoon Eun-hye, or Park Min Young.
The OTP is crucial, but I guess we'll just have to wait to see what the synopsis and characters will be before deciding who will fit the roles.

Ugh, I would love Choi Jin Hyuk to be in a Hong Sisters drama. Especially since it's on MBC and he's been MBC's ratings golden boy since Gu Family Book and now Pride and Prejudice.
but the problem is his army enlisting. Will the drama gods and the army gods be kind and let us have one more CJH drama after P&P?

The writing is the most important part of any shows and these two are so awesome! I love the photo. They're so cute! I now feel like the laziest writer on earth.
The Hong sisters make their actors and actresses look good. I'll watch no matter who's in it, with fingers crossed for it to be one of the good ones. My dream: an amazing OTP played by an actor and actress I haven't even noticed before now, who will suddenly blow me away with awesome characters and charisma. I want to be kicking myself that I didn't notice how amazing they were before!

Yaaaaaay I've been waiting for this news all year long!!!!! If it's anything like best love (which is like my most favorite Hong sisters' drama) I'd say it will be a cracking start to the new year!
But the thing is as much as I love GHJ I think its about time the ladies opted for another leading lady.....I'd like to see another actress of GHJ's caliber tackle the Hong sisters' latest! As for the leading man I am cool with LJK!!! Such a hotie he is!! And I so would like to see him in a proper rom com instead of all the action oriented scripts he is going for these days.....

Me too! I feel like a lot of people are iffy on Lee Jun-ki and all for Gong Hyo-jin for this, but I'm the opposite. I'm really stoked to see Lee Jun-ki as a first lead in a Hong Sisters! I feel like I've been waiting for him to have a good modern rom-com because he's never really done that (as a first lead) before when you think about it.
And I actually don't think I want Gong Hyo-jin for this. I LOVE HER. She is one of my favorite actresses BUT I have so much fun seeing what kinds of compelling characters and pairings the Hong Sisters come up with and I would just love for them to pick someone different this time. I was ecstatic when she was cast for the second time in TMS, but again and with their very next drama? I hope not. Give us a fresh lead pairing!

While I wouldn't call them my favorite writer's I do always give their dramas a chance. Even though I hated Big and couldn't get into Master's Sun I'll still give this a chance.
I kind of get why they'd use Gong Hyo-jin again as if I were a writer and had the power I'd do the same. If I were a writer and I had a group of actors I had faith in I'd probably use them and only them never trying anyone new unless necessary.
That being said It wouldn't hurt to see some new blood in a Hong sisters drama. I'd second Han Groo for the female lead or Im Joo-eun. Actually forget Han Groo I love her but Marriage not Dating was hopefully enough of a success for her to keep getting leading roles Im Joo-eun on the other hand has had a terrible time finding the right role since being so awesome in Han/Soul. So Hong sisters in the incredibly unlikely chance you guys were to read this please cast Im Joo-eun as your female lead.

I kind of feel the same way -- I adored her in Coffee Prince but haven't liked her in anything else -- Lie to Me really turned me off her but probably more the fault of whoever did her clothes for that one. Worked against whatever she was trying to do in her performance.

Hong Sisters dramas are a big hit or miss for me. I loved "My Girl", "Hong Gil Dong" and "My Girlfriend is a Gumiho"... but I didn't like any of their other dramas (though I wanted to!).
I'm crossing my fingers that they'll pick lead actors that I really like. Im Joo Eun, Jung So Min or Han Groo. And Yoo Seung Ho, Yoon Woo Jin or Jo Jung Suk.
Let this be a hit for me!

I know they have worked together before but I didn't try that drama because it's kinda hard to find it with subs online. But yoon eun hye will be good too ^^ I don't know if it's possible since she is busy with another movie

Hyo Jin is in the dtsge production of Educating Rita right now. Apparently there are 2 lead actress; Tablo's wife Kang Hye Jung. I think they rotate the lead actress. Who knows maybe she'll take it. I love her in rom coms esp Hong's sisters. But she needs an awesome partner. Her last two were fantastic!
Would love Song Jae Rim and skim So Eun. We've seen their chemistry in WGM so that will be awesome!

How awesome would that be? and from a business standpoint, think of all the free publicitythe drama would get. Arguably the most famous TV writers paired with the "it" duo of the moment. Not too mention the variety transferred to drama angle.
It would be a pop-culture goldmine. From SJR and KSE standpoint I could understand if they didn't want to be typecasted as a loveline to this one person, but being the lead in a primetime drama would be a crazy boon for there careers. Plus think of all the meta humor the Hong's would integrate! (Stripped shorts scene anyone?)

Watching their next project regardless...I mean, I did watch Big from start to finish despite the whole letdown towards the last 4-5 episodes...and esp. the ending! Ugh!
I hope they work with new actors (I mean actors they haven't worked with) this time though and hopefully to newer rising rookie actors/actresses, but with cameos (like usual) from our past Hong sister actors/actresses! I mean, I discover Park Shin Hye from You're Beautiful and I have been a fan of hers since then (and went back to watch all her work)...along with Yonghwa and JKS.

Been waiting--and I still disagree on Big. It did exactly as they wanted it to and was in keeping with their tradition. The ending was popular in Korea, if memory serves. It's just that it bent more to Korean Drama/literature rules than American sensibilities on story. They kept to the theme and bent to that theme. For that, they did well. Not saying it's one of their best dramas ever, but the fact they went back to a well-known story shows they were experimenting and it certainly delivered on Master's Sun.
Plus Master's Sun was high art--definitely better than a lot of their other dramas. It delivered subtle which was a complaint often said over and over again. It was gorgeous to look at and the direction was well done... plus their signature undercutting.
And I've been waiting for this. I want to see how they will outdo themselves this time--what they will choose for their evolving theme... if they will bring back more meta... will they do an illusion? Will they outstrip a theme that's never been well done in dramas? Will they do the heart stopping drama, or something like Master's Sun with layered meanings both visually and so on... See--they've become flexible now that the sky is the limit--though I still expect them to bend to theme like they always do.
Their writing is an example of theme-driven, which goes to show that character-driven and event-driven isn't the only way to write stories.
I think they still want to explore positive parent roles... especially mothers. And I hope they will try for an evolving theme like last time--made it interesting. But I'll know when they say what the set up is what the plot is likely to be--and what kind of ride it is. Last time it was a Haunted House of mirrors... Greatest Love was like a Roller Coaster. Big was a Merry-go-round... so I want to see what they are choosing this time.
