Shin Sung-rok, Jo Yoon-hee’s first shoots for King’s Face
by girlfriday
I really didn’t think Lee Jong-seok was going to have any competition for Mane of Shame this year, but I dunno… Shin Sung-rok is giving him a run for his money. I know, there’s no time for growing manes when you’re busy booking it back and forth between two drama sets. Shin is currently in tvN’s cerebral thriller Liar Game and pulling double duty for his first period drama, KBS’s fusion historical series The King’s Face. We’ll build in a period of adjustment before declaring the mane a total shame; it is, after all, just his first day on set.
Shin stars in the drama as a face reader — a fortuneteller whose specialty is in reading the features of a person’s face. He was once an idealistic young man who dreamed of an equal society without classes, but a tragedy hardens him and he slowly starts to transform into an ambitious man with hopes of revenge. He’ll be both a political tool and a rival to the hero of the story, Prince Gwanghae, played by Seo In-gook (High School King of Savvy).
The source of their strife is the heroine, played by Jo Yoon-hee (Nine). She’s a young noblewoman who undergoes many changes over the course of the drama — she starts out sheltered and refined, but grows bolder and more resolute with every new hardship that she faces, and eventually becomes a strong woman. She’ll have the love of the prince, the face reader, and even the king.
Lee Sung-jae (Suspicious Housekeeper) is right at home playing the villain of the story (Remember how he creeped us all out in Gu Family Book?). His King Seonjo is a weak ruler, driven to madness by the mounting anxiety he feels over the people who are trying to take away his crown, none more so — in his estimation — than his illegitimate son Prince Gwanghae. The other characters will all get swept up in the strife between father and son, in their struggle for legitimacy and power.
The King’s Face will be helmed by the PD of Gaksital and the writer of War of Money, and follows Iron Man on Wednesdays and Thursdays in mid-November.

Well….And I hate to say it…I have seen worse hair in K-dramaland. I will have to see how "hairable" it gets! I hope it makes the cut!

On a more serious note, though, the drama looks interesting and I am hopeful that his hair will blend in with the rest of the production. I mean, after all, Shin Sung Rok is a cut above the rest, but that is just splitting hairs at this point.

but then it turns out the girl is, on a closer look, a true switch girl type. flower in public, a snoring loudmouth at home, who gossips on everyone and eats like a horse. boy was the face reader mistaken... and then he quits his face reading job and becomes a farmer, but all the vegetables have faces too and they start reminding him of the king and the princess and he throws away his rake and runs into the woods and becomes a scary legend of the mad guy from the hill.
seems like this guy inspires countless crazy plots for me somehow.

Ah! You know, in My Love from the Stars I was always expecting SSR would turn out to be from an alien world himself. I was really disappointed that in the end he didn't have any superpowers. If he'd traveled through time but had amnesia, that would explain it!
Guess SSR inspires crazy plots for lots of us.

I guess that´s why he is the host of Liar Game. he can read faces.
oh man. such fun. I could invent so much more work for him than he already has.

I actually think that he does not look so bad on the first (top) shot. The hair is messy, yes. But he looks intriguing as well. Maybe it's the shot angle?

It's funny though, in the Liar Game SSR plays a character that somewhat is capable of mind games, almost like the mind reader. And here he is playing a face reader?

I see this having the potential to go either the way of Tree with Deep Roots- tense, complex political conflicts plus a whole lot of tear-jerking drama- or the way of Moon Sun- endlessly recycled (and really awkward) love triangle(s) conflicts. I'm going to wait and see which way it leans before committing myself....

Lee Jong-seok for that hideous highschool hairstyle, Jang Hyuk's middle parting in FTLY ep 9 and 10, and now Shin Sung-rok's permed ancient look. We need to have 3 winners since there's really not much between them.

I think you're on to something here. Has there always been a Mane of Shame category in the Beanie Awards? If not, 2014 is a good year to start one.

Yes there was. Just last year. Beanie Awards had a Mane of Shame category as well as a Mane of Glory category. The winner for the latter was none other than Gumihot Daddy with 100% of the votes ;)
The categories for hair were:
MOST SHAMEFUL MANE OF SHAME with YEH's Perma-shame (lol) as the winner
and
MOST GLORIOUS MANE OF GLORY:

Yes indeed!
Lee Jong-Suk should appear twice on the list. Don't forget to add the hairstyle he sported in Doctor Stranger. It was a cross between the Simpson's character Sideshow Bob and someone who might recently have received electric shock.

It's not as bad as Uhmforce's Jesus hair in Sword and Flower. Not as bad as Sadam's...blonde nightmare in Night Watchman (he is after all a shaman so it could be worse). Plus SSK can be riveting enough to overlook it. I hope they don't turn my wonderful menace into a twitterpated sadsack. Sigh love geometry sucks.

Jo Yoon Hee, wow, she's pretty in hanbok.
What a year for Shin Sung Rok, after the villain role on YFAS, he shine.. He's a great actor, and finally the dramaland team recognize him, a talented actor. Chukaeee...
Like GF said, I remember he creeped me, and I hate him. But I'm pretty exciting, we got one great villain, yay!

I thought the same thing about Jo Yoon-hee! I didn't dig her bowl cut bob fusion style in Nine (which is the only project I've seen her in) so I was pleasantly surprised when I scrolled down and saw how lovely she looks here.

On the subject of hair, I must admit that at first I really disliked Jo Yoon-hee in Nine, because of that bowl-cut she sported. It really distracted me from much of her acting. Later, however, when I went back to watch Nine again, I paid more attention to her acting. Still...she looks sooooooooo much better here, in her hanbook.

I'm kinda worried about him doing two dramas at once.
I understand that they're both great roles for him and it mustn't have been easy to decide. But he still has about a month of shooting left for "Liar Game". And everyone knows that sageuks are not easy projects to tackle.
Let's just hope everything turns out okay and he finishes both dramas safely. =\

Speaking of Gu Family Book ... Gumihot Daddy's Mane of Glory would have prollie looked good on Shin Sung-rok, but let's be real, the only person who can pull off Wol Ryung's mane of glory is none of other than Choi Jin Hyuk ;)
That being said, if the hair wasn't in wannabe jerry curls, the hair would be so bad. Why couldn't it had been fluffy like Gumihot Daddy's?

So simply put, Jo Yoon-hee is Kim-Gae-shi-but-not-really-Kim-Gae-shi???
Weird. All clues to her role point out she's supposed to be Kim Gae-shi.
It just confuses me since Kim Gae-shi was a court lady first before becoming Gwanghae-gun's passion and Achilles heel, but also rumored to be also Seonjo's concubine.
Also, because the other woman in Gwanghae-gun's triumvirate of women (the other is his stepmom Queen Inmok more known as "Seo-gung Mama" since she resided in the western part of (presumably) Changdeokgung Palace) is his Consort Lady Ryu, obviously the one supposed to be a noble, but is STILL conspicuously absent in the casting rounds.
Last, I hate the other Gwanghae-gun drama. As if they haven't tired of portraying Gwanghae-gun as evil & Injo as virtuous in the old sageuks...
