Psychic heroine heads comic fantasy drama Sweden Laundry
by javabeans
I’m a bit puzzled about this new drama being produced for cable outlets MBC Every1 and MBC Dramanet, but in a curiosity-has-been-piqued sort of way. Sweden Laundry is the name of the “comic fantasy drama,” and it also happens to be the name of an indie band, who will be participating in the OST. That makes me wonder if the music duo will be featured heavily and perhaps even narratively, or whether it’s just a convenient meta reference that coincides with the drama’s backdrop being a laundry.
In any case, Sweden Laundry (the drama) is centered around an ordinary heroine with superpowers (…wouldn’t that make her not ordinary?) that allow her to see the worries that other people are thinking. It sounds like the show will take a humorous, slice-of-life approach, showing the heroine’s everyday life as well as expressing people’s thoughts and psychological states in a detailed, funny way.
Directing is PD Jung Hwan-seok of Rude Miss Young-ae and Three Men, Three Women, and he described this as an upbeat “nice drama”—the term often used as the antithesis to the makjang drama, which has nicer characters and a lack of knee-jerk histrionics. He said, “I wanted to depict a world that goes against the bitter reality where bad, mean people get ahead, which shows nice people winning.” That’s something I could get behind.
MBC Dramanet and MBC Every1 don’t produce much original programming (they show reruns, mostly) but there’s one show in particular they’re looking to as the standard of success, which is their fusion sageuk investigative drama Chosun Police (Byul Soon Geom), whose first season ran in 2007 and produced two additional seasons. Even if Sweden Laundry doesn’t reproduce that kind of success, it sounds like something I’ll want to keep an eye on. It’ll launch at the end of November.

Small channel & small budget: I say newbies mostly and maybe idols.
Concept reminds me of Nailshop Paris which despite the WTFery had really nice elements.
I will keep an eye on this one.
