Plus Nine Boys: Episode 14 (Final)
by LollyPip
It’s time to say goodbye to our plus-nine boys, and wish them well wherever their love lives take them. All four boys have their stories wrapped up in ways that stay truthful to the characters, which is a lovely thing to see; and while they may not all have had the year they hoped for, I believe they have all grown and changed in ways that will bring them happiness in the future.
Track 14: “Boys become men”
After fighting with Jae-bum, Jin-gu follows Se-young up to her apartment door, reminding her that they knew this would happen and everything will be fine, but she’s too emotional to listen. She says they shouldn’t do this anymore, and he asks if she truly means that, but Se-young just cries that she can’t even think right now and slams the door in his face.
Waiting for Da-in at the cafe, Kwang-soo gets a text from her simply saying, “I’m sorry, Oppa,” and he runs out. He pounds on her door and yells for her in a terrible replay of their breakup from ten years ago, but she’s not even home — she’s out driving with a sleeping Eun-seo in the car and crying in pain.
Kwang-soo and Jin-gu both wait outside their ladies’ doors in vain, and Jin-gu says in voiceover that breakups are hardest for men, but that’s the moment when boys become men.
Su-ah shows up for Min-gu’s competition, and he takes strength from her presence and goes into his bout with his game face on. It’s the same opponent from his humiliating pooping incident, but he doesn’t let it faze him and he puts up a good fight. But the guy manages to win anyway, and when Min-gu looks up to the stands, Su-ah has gone. Min-gu doesn’t even look upset, just resigned, and he thinks to himself that he failed in his two goals at the same time — the girl, and getting into college.
Kwang-soo tries to find Da-in at the cafe, but it’s closed today. He waits in hope that she’s only late, but she never shows up. He goes to Eun-seo’s school but her teacher tells him that she’s absent today. He sends Da-in a text asking how she could do this again after saying she was sorry for disappearing the first time, and that he’s worried about her.
Jin-gu gets to work to find that Se-young hasn’t come in today, and he goes to their stairwell to call her but her phone is off. Their boss makes a comment that this is why office dating shouldn’t be allowed, because when the couple breaks up one of them always quits. Jin-gu freaks out at the news that Se-young actually quit her job, and he runs all the way to her place, but she doesn’t answer the door or her phone.
Determined, Jin-gu heads back to work and goes straight for Jae-bum’s office, asking him in very formal language to delay Se-young’s resignation approval. He argues her case — that she loves the company and the people and has big dreams, and he offers his own resignation if it’s too hard for them all to work together. Jae-bum stays silent but seems moved, and Jin-gu turns to go but Jae-bum stops him, though we don’t hear what he says next.
Se-young mopes while her friend tries to get through to her, refusing to even eat fried chicken (which is how we know this is Very Serious). Her friend calls her pathetic for refusing to eat and quitting her job, and gripes at her even more when she refuses to answer another call from Jin-gu. She asks if it’s so important what others think — aren’t her and Jin-gu’s feelings important too? Se-young just moans that if your relationship hurts others, it will hurt you too, but her friend counters that love is supposed to be hard.
Ever the supportive sidekick, Young-hoon commiserates with Kwang-soo over Da-in doing the exact same thing to him again. He goes a bit too far, forcing Kwang-soo to defend her. Young-hoon coos sarcastically that it must be true love, and complains that it was nice seeing him happy but now he’ll be gloomy again.
They’re called into the boss’s office, where Kwang-soo’s entire Sponge team is looking upset — oh no. Kwang-soo is told that management wants to cancel the show due to low ratings, and Kwang-soo takes offense that they didn’t even talk to him as the producer. He argues that if there’s a problem they should get a chance to solve it, and his team looks surprised to see him so passionate about their show.
Later in his car, Kwang-soo listens to a radio show where listeners are encouraged to call in to say something they never got to say to their loved ones (DJ cameo by Yoon Sang). He calls in a message for Da-in, wondering if she’s crying somewhere and asking her to call him. He says that he regrets losing her ten years ago and that he was immature, thinking that if he forgot about her he’d find a new love. But ten years passed and when he saw her again, he realized she was the only woman for him. He starts to cry and says it’s okay if she’s late as long as she comes back, and that he misses her.
Se-young still isn’t back at work the next day, and Jin-gu spends the day staring at her empty cubicle and looking through the couple photos from their work trip earlier in the year. He remembers how she talked about her dream of being a travel writer, and he heads out to Da-in’s cafe thinking she may be there with her friend.
The cafe is still closed, but when Jin-gu turns to leave he finds Jae-bum behind him, having had the same idea. They finally sit to talk now that they have a common concern, and Jae-bum admits that when he met with Se-young two days ago he was still furious with Jin-gu. Since Jin-gu hurt Se-young so much in the past, he was worried he’d do it again.
But Se-young had told him that she’d loved Jin-gu ever since then, and Jin-gu seems serious this time, so Jae-bum admits his jealousy and apologizes for his behavior. Jin-gu apologizes in turn for lying to his friend, and in the manner of guys all over the world, Jae-bum just says he hates him and all is forgiven.
It’s Underwear Couch Time again for poor Kwang-soo, but Mom has no sympathy and tells him to take out the recycling and go for a walk. He does, still in his undies, but suddenly he wanders through a cloud of bubbles and looks up as romantic music swells… it’s little Eun-seo, happily blowing bubbles into the wind. D’awww. Da-in isn’t far away of course, and she smiles at him genuinely.
Jin-gu still can’t get Se-young on the phone, and he paces on the roof at work but freezes when he sees Go-eun. He tries to slink by her but she stops him to talk. She tells him that he disappoints her, but clarifies that it’s because he let his girlfriend quit. She says she’s worried about Se-young because she stresses so much (I’ll say), and tells Jin-gu that she still hates him but he should go take care of his girlfriend, and tells him where Se-young is hiding out.
Se-young is currently shuffling back to her friend’s apartment in her sweatpants and looking very, um… unemployed. She gets to the corner and sees Jin-gu waiting near the steps, and there’s this hilarious moment where her eyes dart to the staircase, then his eyes dart to the staircase, and she makes a run for it. But she’s no match for his long legs, and he grabs her before she can get far.
He immediately notices her puffy eyes from crying and knows that she missed him, and he tells her that he talked to Jae-bum and that she’s to show up to work tomorrow. He fusses at her for acting like this and says he doesn’t understand her, but that neither Jae-bum nor Go-eun want to see her in pain and they both understand.
Se-young still won’t look at him so Jin-gu persists, telling her it’s just a rocky start for them. He says he knows she likes him and he goes crazy when he sees her, and he promises he’ll be better. He admits that he was only acting like he knew love, but he thinks he really knows now because even though they fight, he’s useless without her. SWOON.
Se-young finally looks at him, and he tells her they’re inseparable because they’re related search terms, and asks if she wants a hug. He nods her head for her and she leans on him (so cute), getting in a few smacks when he asks if she’s washed her hair, HAHA.
Da-in and Kwang-soo (still in his unders) sit to talk, but he has trouble speaking and only asks if she’s okay. Looking more relaxed than she ever has, she apologizes and promises she’ll never disappear again (Kwang-soo: “Good. It’s a bad habit.” Ha). He asks if she didn’t show up because he was pushing too hard or if his sister interfered again, but Da-in says it’s neither of those.
She says that Kwang-soo is still like a boy, but she’s been married and had a child since they last dated. She says that it’s hard being a single mother and she didn’t want to bring those hardships to him, only wanting to leave him with the beautiful memories of what she was like ten years ago. Kwang-soo pouts at her that she’s more beautiful now than in his memories, and that he doesn’t want only beautiful memories.
He says that at his age he thinks the best thing is someone you’re comfortable with and who accepts the good and bad things, and that she’s that person for him. He says he’s in no hurry to marry her, but asks her to just think about it — even if she needs to think her whole life, he’ll wait.
Min-gu sits alone in a noraebang singing to himself, and hangs his head when the song he sang to Su-ah at the Standing Egg concert (“Yes, You”) starts to play. He sings along, and Su-ah finds him there. They go outside to talk and she tells him that she left his competition because he was struggling, and asks what he’ll do now about school. She correctly tells him he lost because he didn’t train hard enough, being too busy chasing her.
Su-ah says that if he really wants to go to college, to train hard and try again. She says that we have lots of chances in life, and to keep trying and not give up, and she adorably pulls noona-rank when he gets a little mouthy that she hasn’t gotten into college yet either, hee. She tells him she has something other than college that she truly wants, but it’s a secret.
Speaking as his noona who has two more years of failure under her belt, Su-ah advises Min-gu that he doesn’t just have to do what everyone else does and go to college. She says that at first she thought he was weird, but now she thinks he’s a great kid, and wants him to succeed.
Su-ah gets up to leave and Min-gu asks if they’re really breaking up, and she says that maybe after they each figure out what they want in life and become the right people for each other, they’ll meet again. She suggests a cool breakup scene like in a movie, and pulls out her MP3 player. She plays their Standing Egg song for him and asks him to close his eyes and think about what he really wants for his future. She puts in the other earbud for him and hands him the player, and walks away crying. When Min-gu opens his eyes, she’s gone.
At home later, Dong-gu practices his lines (it turns out he got a supporting role in the movie after all!) and even Min-gu has to admit he’s gotten better. His character has a line about going to a bathhouse with his father, and he asks Min-gu if he ever went there with their dad, but Min-gu can’t remember. Mom asks if Dong-gu is curious about his dad, and she motions Kwang-soo to follow her to her room.
She pulls out a box that she’s saved for Dong-gu of her deceased husband’s things, and asks him to be a good uncle and give them to Dong-gu. Kwang-soo says to have Jin-gu do it, but he didn’t come home last night (oh really?). Mom assumes he was working all night but Kwang-soo is all, “PSSHT right, he’s with a girl,” and Mom panics. Way to out your nephew, dude.
Jin-gu blearily answers his phone from Se-young’s bed (rawr!) but Mom doesn’t believe his lies that he’s working. He happily snuggles in again with Se-young, who tries to throw him off because she’s hungry, but I’m on his side — cuddles before food! She tosses him off the bed but he just pulls her down with him, determined to get in all the skinship he can.
Min-gu’s friends fit in a short Spam PPL, and his one friend who always makes the weird food combinations says he’s taking a cooking class. They ask Min-gu if he’ll keep doing judo, and he says he decided that judo is his dream — he wants to give it his all, and try different techniques to get better and learn.
Mom sets the table while Kwang-soo and Dong-gu exchange deep-tissue back massages, and everyone freezes in shock when Jin-gu walks in with Se-young. Se-young looks nervous but Jin-gu couldn’t possibly look prouder to introduce his mother to her future daughter-in-law, it’s so adorable. Kwang-soo only grumbles at being caught in his underwear yet again, HAHA.
Lunch is super awkward until Jin-gu tells everyone to stop staring at Se-young so she can eat. Mom asks about her parents, and exactly nobody will be surprised to hear they own a sashimi restaurant. Mom complains that she didn’t cook anything nice because she didn’t know they’d have company, and when Se-young offers to make eggs, Kwang-soo hilariously orders a couple of poached ones.
Jin-gu tells Se-young not to cook anything and Mom has a fit and goes to make them herself, slamming them down on the table. Mom is a little shocked to see how solicitous Jin-gu is to Se-young, and Kwang-soo gives Mom food attentively too, just in case she’s jealous. Se-young offers to peel fruit, calling her Mother a few times and totally disarming Mom. Soon she’s clapping her hands in delight at her new daughter-in-law.
Jin-gu drags Se-young into his room for some more skinship like the giant cuddlemonster that he is, but when he goes in for smooches she sees Dong-gu giving her the “I’m watching you” fingers from the doorway and shoves Jin-gu away. PWAHAHA. Better get used to bratty little brothers, Se-young.
The whole family sits down to watch a home video, and Min-gu gets home just in time (and is thrilled to meet his new sister-in-law). Mom tells Dong-gu that this video is a gift from his father, and she notes that this was a bad year but they got through it and they even gained a new addition to the family.
The video is so sweet, mostly clips of baby Dong-gu and his daddy, who looks like he was a wonderful loving father. There are still shots of the whole family, including cute nine-year-old Min-gu and a gawky teenage Jin-gu. Everyone laughs and comments except for Dong-gu, who gets quiet and starts to cry. Kwang-soo hugs him while he sobs for his lost father — I’m totally not crying, it’s just really humid in here.
Jin-gu and Se-young go out with Jae-bum and Go-eun to their friend’s restaurant, who all cringe at how sappy they are together and holler at them to quit it (which they don’t, of course). Kwang-soo practices stupid human tricks with his Sponge team, and Min-gu trains at judo harder than ever. Dong-gu runs his lines for his movie and he’s pretty good now, having learned to access his emotions.
Jin-gu narrates that just as we must fall in order to start over, a boy must experience growing pains to become an adult. Mom runs across Kwang-soo playing with Eun-seo and Da-in at the playground and starts to bluster but smiles to see how happy they are, no longer able to maintain her grumpiness about him seeing a single mother. In voiceover, Kwang-soo says that a plus-nine year is a chance to look back slowly on the road you’ve taken thus far.
We see Su-ah with a guitar strapped to her back, bracing herself for a music audition, and I’m not surprised that music is her secret life’s dream. Min-gu narrates that a plus-nine year is crossing a new threshold. We see Jin-gu waiting impatiently until a curtain draws back to reveal Se-young in a bridal gown, and Jin-gu can only stare with the same besotted stare he always gives her when she looks especially beautiful. He narrates that a plus-nine year is just a small hill, where you can lay down your heavy burdens and rest a while, as a broad smile crosses his face to see his gorgeous bride.
COMMENTS
It’s very rare for me to be completely satisfied with a drama finale, but in this case I can’t think of a single thing I would change. I feel that all four boys had their stories wrapped up in genuinely truthful ways, and that even though they each grew during the course of the series, they always grew in a direction that was honest to the people they were from the beginning.
Dong-gu’s story never really was a love story with a girl — his arc was more about learning to stop relying on his cuteness, and that he needed to get in touch with his emotions if he wanted to be a successful actor. I love that the thing that pushed him into being a genuine actor started with losing Baek-ji, but really sunk in when he had a chance to mourn the father he never knew. And it’s not that he even lacked for father-figures, because he had more than his fair share of those — but nothing can truly take the place of your father. I’m happy that he got to make that connection and feel that loss, because it will serve him well in the future.
I thought Min-gu handled his disappointment with grace and maturity, and really took Su-ah’s words to heart. Work hard, find your true dream, and don’t necessarily just do what everyone does and maybe someday they’ll find each other again when they’re the people they want to be. I do think they genuinely cared for each other, but they met too soon and were too immature to have a real relationship — and truthfully, their ability to recognize that was a big step in gaining that maturity. I have every reason to believe that some day, if they meet again, they could fall in love for real.
Jin-gu and Se-young — what can I say? Sweetest couple ever. I loved the way they balance each other out, since Se-young is an over-worrier and Jin-gu is a let-me-fix-it-for-you kinda guy. I feel like they can be together and feel safe that what each lacks, the other can take up the slack for, and that’s a rare kind of security that bodes well for a long happy life together. I was happy that they worked things out with Go-eun and Jae-bum in a realistic way… their friends were still hurt and angry, but they were good enough friends to put their feelings aside in order to keep all their friendships. That’s some true love, right there (and maybe it’s just me, but I feel that Jae-bum and Go-eun are far more suited for each other anyway, unless I was seeing foreshadowing where there was none). And I know that no matter how long they’re together, and no matter what they go through, Jin-gu will always look at Se-young with those wonderfully infatuated puppy-dog-love-filled eyes.
But I think my favorite ending was Kwang-soo’s, despite not getting exactly what he wanted. I know what Kwang-soo suffered when Da-in disappeared, and I had to really dig deep to care about Da-in’s side of things. I still think that what she did to him was horrifically hurtful, but I accept that she did regret it and wanted to make it up to him. And while I’ll never understand her behavior in the past, I do get her present fears of not wanting to hurt Kwang-soo again or bring hardship on him in a society that would judge him for dating a single mother.
Kwang-soo had two major hurdles to jump in the course of the drama — getting over his past hurt when it came to Da-in, and learning to meet her on her own terms in the present, instead of rushing headlong into commitment. I feel like he was a bit frantic to “fix” the past and get engaged, as if getting that one step further this time would erase her previous rejection. But he learned that it’s okay to not have her locked down, and that in fact he has more chance of a future with her if he relaxes and lets her come to him in her own time. He was such a different person by the end, and it’s great to see all that pain and anxiety gone from his face. The final scene with him and Eun-seo and Da-in playing was the first time I felt he was truly happy and without worry, even though things are still up in the air with Da-in, and it was wonderful.
Overall I loved this show, even when I struggled to understand the characters (or let’s face it, sometimes to even care about some of them) because they all just seemed so real, and their lives never felt like a script. It really made me think about life and love, which sounds so corny but it’s true, and I do feel like I learned some things about people by watching the show. Plus Nine Boys will definitely go down in my memory as one of my favorites, populated by some of my favorite characters, with one of the most satisfying drama endings I’ve experienced.

I love them in the MV as well because they show their spark chemistry even just in a short MV like that
Oh I hope find a boyfriend who looks at me with that puppy-filled-love eye like Jin goo looks at Se young :D

The Mingu and Sooah arc of the drama was my favourite thing about this drama, and I was really sad to see them going their separate ways. The more I think about their ending though, the more I like it. I agree, they met to soon to get into a serious relationship. Both are still learning about themselves and not in the right stage of their to have a serious relationship. I liked that we weren't given a direct closure and that there is hope for them to meet again. I hope that their journey of finding themselves will lead them into finding each other again.
This drama was such a fun ride. I wish it was a tad longer, but short and sweet wins.

I was really happy with this ending! It's been a long time since a drama's last episode left me feeling like it ended just right, but this one did. It's such a satisfying feeling, and it feels like so few dramas (especially rom coms) pull it off. Well done to the Plus-9 writing and production team! And thanks so much, LollyPip (and girlfriday) for the great recaps.

Truly one of my favorites of the year and one I will definitely rewatch. Thanks for the wonderful recaps LollyPip and Girlfriday. You made the show much more enjoyable to watch.
I agree it was an overall very satisfying ending. My favorite couple was the 29er's. Loved Jin-gu and Se-young. Although I must say Jin-gu should have got that kiss before Dong-gu interrupted. I also loved mom's character. She was hilarious, caring and very realistic. I love this actress. Also like the fact that the show not only gave us Su-ah and Min-gu's dreams but one of Min-gu's buddies. I'm glad him creating grocery store meals wasn't just a running joke. This shows how well the story was planned to tie in his story to the general theme of the final episode: hopes and dreams for future. I will be looking out for this writer's work. I also loved the music and noticed the thanks to all the indie songs at the episode's end. But I think not all the songs were translated in subs which is a shame in the light of what Girlfriday wrote for episode 13.
Looking forward to Kim Young-Kwang's future projects. I hope his character in Pinocchio has a story of his own and is not just an annoying third wheel.
And I hope we will have another show equally good soon. I didn't care much for Discovery of Romance and My Secret Hotel (in fact they both annoyed me a lot by the time they hit mid sections) But I will seriously miss this one. Thanks TvN!

What a satisfying ending.. One of the best endings I have seen in a drama. It did not leave me disappointed or scratching my head. I think having only 14 episodes really worked for the drama since it had just the right amount of story-telling that everything got conveyed appropriately without the use of filler/setup episodes. Good job TvN for another good rom-com and thanks guys for the recaps.

I admit, I kinda got out of this drama a bit towards the end, not because I don't love it and definitely not because it isn't good, but because I've been busy and perhaps because it just didn't have that addiction/investment factor that it had in the beginning for me, unless when it came to developments between Jin-gu and Se-young.
But I loved all the endings + especially adored 19 and 29's story lines and leading ladies. While Se-young, Kwang-soo, and Jin-gu were early favorites of mine, I'd say it's notable that it's actually Soo-ah that came out on top in terms of favorites.
In fact, I'd actually LOVE to have a whole drama loosely-based on her and Min-gu's arc (except with a happy ending).
All in all, this was a good drama. Easy, satisfying watch that's also realistic. LOVED the music. Is it one of my favorites? Actually, probably not. But I still loved and enjoyed it very much :)

i don't know why but i feel the same too, so i definitely couldn't relate to everyone's comments on how good this drama is. i was quite surprised by the positive comments, to be honest!
i didn't skip any parts so it's not like i didn't watch the entire drama or anything. i would say it's a good drama that didn't screw up with a horrible ending, but there weren't any points in the show that kept me waiting for the next episode. i certainly didn't care for the 9, 19 arc. the 29 arc was just much back and forth pushing, and the 39 couple was sweet, but how Da-In still fails to communicate with Kwang Soo just made me pretty exasperated till the end.
hmmm would i recommend this drama to someone who hasn't caught it before? probably not.

I can't believe I almost didn't watch this drama! Just began watching it this week and I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed every relationship development and the way it ended was great for each of them — and I wish I can find a Jin-gu in my life.

Like others here, Plus9 is one of the best I've seen this year. i was afraid the unusual 14 episodes might mean chopped off ending or poor wrap up, but alas 16 is just a number... The writer is so smooth in the developement that the drama ran smoothly, with each characters fully developed, with each story line well plotted out...
I will miss every one in this drama... The characters and stories are real... I will miss JG 's goofy lovey dovey swoon he has only for SY... I will miss SY out of this world happy in love smile...I will miss KS and DI's angst which blossomed into genuine happiness...I will miss MG immature but heart felt love for his dream girl( who actually is a badass, independent thinker, hehe).... I will miss DG's innocence- how he tries the whole time to emote and fails...and yet he shows a heartwrenching cry when reality dealt him harshly- the loss of his little girlfriend and his mourning for his father that he hardly knew.
Thank you show...you are an A Plus drama ... Well done....
And, of course,we couldn't have enjoyed this drama without the excellent recaps from our tireless @ girlfriday and @ Lollypip....Thank you...

i agree, i love how real the stories were. i didn't feel like i was watching a drama but more like i was seeing someone's experience in front of me.
Jingu and Seyoung had such a sweet story, i would have loved to see them visiting Seyoung's hometown. Maybe with the entire team Miss Piggy?
The songs were seriously wonderful, and i think its interesting that they got an idol to be a fan of indie music.

Ah, lovely ending. Thanks so much for the recaps and comments. I was in that humid room with you, I totally lost it when Donggu starting crying for his dad.
One of my favorite things was the convenience store recipes of Mingu's friend. The spam one looked yummy! It reminded me of Happy Together's late night cafeteria, which sadly is now gone.

I think this is one of the greatest endings/ways to wrap up characters. Each character had their own conclusions, and grew up. Yay for growth! Thanks for the recap! I really loved this episode.

Overall, I really enjoyed this drama. In order of preference, I loved first 29, second 19, third family, then merely tolerated 9, and flat-out disliked 39. If I rewatch Plus Nine Boys in the future, I would have to skip Kwang Soo and Da In entirely because they are one of the most frustrating couples ever. Looks like Mr. Fortuneteller was wrong, though, since we got two happy endings.
Honestly, I found Se Young to be selfish in one-sidedly ending their relationship just because things got too tough. Woman, he has told you time and time again to lean on him, share the burden, he will handle it, but she just gives up and walks away to the point where he can't even find her. Jae Bum and Go Eun had to literally give them their blessings before she would go back to Jin Gu. Where is her trust in him? Nevertheless, I thought Se Young's Meet the Family was perfect timing because she even got to watch videos of her late future father-in-law. I don't understand why Jin Gu stopped her from making eggs, since it could have been a chance to earn brownie points with his family.
I loved Min Gu and Bong Sook even more in later episodes for being so real. They were the most honest couple out of all the couples. Her pet name for him Ming Goongie is so cute. Their breakup is sad, but at least he got to keep her MP3 player as a memento.
For not paying attention to Dong Gu throughout much of the drama, he was the only Plus Nine Boy to make me cry in back-to-back episodes -- when he lost the lead role and his girlfriend and when he missed his dad whom he never got to meet. Although I am glad Uncle is like a surrogate father to him, but I wish his hyungs would step up to the role, too.
The touches of nine everywhere were so fun to spot (Athlete #199, Auditionee #29, Camera #9, Bus #909); I didn't find the excessive nines to be obnoxious at all. Plus Nine Boys even started on August 29th. Last but not least, this show has the best OST of all time.

And also the number for the radio station that he had to dial! Also full of 9's.
Yes, I love this drama's soundtrack. Standing Egg is my new go-to feel-good band. It's like a dose of soda fizz: sweet, bubbly and happy.

We actually got three kisses (four if you count Min Gu and Su Ah). In chronological order, the "incident" kiss, the rain-soaked kiss, and the confession kiss, but all three were let-downs. Tsk tsk, tvN.

I have loved this show from the beginning and still love it, especially the JG-SY love-line. Soooo glad they are getting married. I know that some people wish for a full drama of the 19er love, but I want it for JG and SY.
This is what a rom com drama should be like. Lately, a lot of the rom coms are mixed with other genres, and somehow the lightness and giddiness that I feel a rom com should have is not there. So I'm glad I watched this drama! *ten thumbs up!*

The couple I watched the show for most was Jin-gu and Se-young.
Looks like I'm the only one who was thinking 'Is that it?' when the episode finished.
I missed the Se-young we saw on the company trip. The one we saw in the last few episodes was just a shadow of her former sparkly self.

This is gonna sound like an odd comment but was this always planned to be a 14 episode drama? I was planning on a marathon and I'm surprised since I expected it to end next week...
Anyway, I've been hearing good things about this drama so I'll give it a go soon. Thanks girlfriday and lollypip in advance for the recaps - I'll definitely be reading them soon!

I think it might have been planned as 16. I really can't say for sure, though.
I was very satisfied with this finale (which I can't say for Discovery of Romance).
...it’s just really humid in here.
LOL. Love your writing LollyPip!

Darn! I didn't know it was only 14 episodes. I wasn't expecting it. Though, it was fun while it lasted, Plus Nine Boys. I enjoyed the show until its last bit. I had a hard time finishing some of my favorite shows this year, it's like I didn't need to finish the last 2 episodes because I already felt contented with what has happened and didn't care about wrapping it up. But for this show, everything just felt right for me. It was light and entertaining, full of heartfelt emotions, and hilarious at times.
Well, on to the next show!!!! I'm over it now! kekeke

I am happy that writer-nim decided to plan and write accordingly. I did hope a better ending for uncle, but I understand that would have put the writer a greater burden. In my mind, I would like the beautiful anchor lady to start to bump him almost anywhere and start to grow on him (and viceversa) almost as him healing his wounds.
On the other hand, kudos to the writer for putting on the spotlight the fact that single mothers are human beings, and also women.
Thanks for the recaps!.

Thank you for the recap!
This was one of the most amazing series I have ever watched thanks to the cutest couple that ever lived. Mahn, I keep re-watching the first few episodes just because JinGu and SeYoung are just too cute. Those trips to the country side, adorable photos they took together, each and every scene of theirs was something I never wanted to miss out. Thank you TvN for showing us such a beautiful couple.

Thanks for the recaps GF and Lollypip. I really enjoyed this drama and I think 14 episodes is just right for it. I still don't care for da in and would have been ok with KS finally coming to terms with not being with her but I did like how he knew her so well to know that she was suffering silently somewhere. It didn't feel like they would be so bad for each other after all.
I was really surprised, given that dong gu, wasn't featured much in the later episodes, that it was his mourning the loss of his father and getting to know him through the video that moved me the most. It was so well done that moment.
I like min gu and su ah's ending very much. I like that they got to know themselves better through knowing each other and perhaps, if paths crossed again, they would be in teh position to be Ina real and equal relationship without hang ups.
I really liked jin gu in this show. I hope KYK continues to get good roles.
Wow, this turned out longer than I expected!!

Lest I forget, thanks LollyPip and GF for recaps past and present.
YaY!! for Jing Gu and Se Young ending up together. I've rooted for them since the beginning and some of their sweetest moments together were when they were on their work/date, scouting for couple holiday spots, flashbacked in this episode. Their skinship here was cute, but not enough of it and Jing Gu taking Se Young home to meet the family made ME feel good!
As for the Min Gu - Su Ah arc, it was so much better towards the end of the show, when Su Ah turned out to be a bad ass noona, and Min Gu was not so full of himself. "Cool" breakup, and appropriately so -they're both young and still finding themselves.
Kwang So - Da In - Nice turnaround, with KS giving her some space, instead of getting ahead of himself.
Dong Gu - I agree with your take of this arc, seeing it only after reading your recap. Thanks again, for your recap has enriched my viewing experience.
BTW, the inventive-creative convenience store food processor character is supposed to be named Wang Ki Chan, :-) though I can't recall whether he's ever been called that in the show. Has anyone here been adventurous enough to try his mash-ups? :-D

What a lovely ending for my boys! Each had this growth and happiness in their end that I can't stop smiling all day. Dongu seeing his father on screen was one of the most touching things I've ever seen in a drama.
Se Young is a gorgeous bride, she and Jin-gu are both lucky to have each other. (Jae-bum and Go-eun could also have their happy ending...)
I am soo glad that uncle had that ending, because it would be far fetched to have them engaged with that rocky history. Mom is slowly opening up to them which is prove that they needed this new approach to their relationship.
Min-goong and Bong-sook had the best break-up ever, though it didn't seem like a final goodbye. They both are in a stage in their lives where they have yet to discover their dreams and the path they're going to take towards a bright future. So they did the most responsible thing and let each find that out on their own.
I hope that I will hold on to this feeling, because next year I will be in a plus9 age... It seems less scary after this drama. :D

I feel like this show will become a staple for me. One I go back to when I need a boost or when I am between good shows. The lightness and air combined with gentle doses of reality just feel so right - not too much angst or overthinking. Love seeing the mom in a youngish contemporary role. I first encountered her as the blacksmith in The Great King (? the one with BYJ), so thought of her as really old and course. There has been mention of KYK always playing the same character (which he does beautifully), so I hope he stretches his wings in the next show. He has such a large sculpted face that can go from drop dead gorgeous to Abraham Lincoln when he is serious. Please keep us posted on the plagiarism issue. with appreciation, ida

Thanks to GirlFriday and lolypip for the wonderful recaps.
Loved the ending as with everyone else. Ranked the romances 29, 19, 39, and 9. Wished we got more screen time with the 19 rather than 39, but understood why they had to cut it at 14 instead of the planned 16 episodes.
Though I agreed with the storyline, the 39 storyline was frustrating but was sufficiently told. Wished we could've got more screen tine with the 19 dating more often in descovering each other, such as Min-guu meeting su-ah's friends, and reason why Su-ah changed. Wanted more of library and PC gaming dates scenes.
If I could change the ending, I would have kept Min-guu and Su-Ah dating together descovering and supporting each other in Judo and becoming Idol. Hopefully, that can be a future arc.

Dong-gu's crying about his lost dad was so evastating to watch. I got all weepy and f course it didn't help that i watched episode 16 of what's with this family and was totallly grieving with Dal Bong. Only kdrama can bring the tears so well.
Didn't like Da In's story at all. There's a kind of weird "woman's story" where we are asked to understand the precious feelings of women as if we women are just delicate little mysterious flowers that men must be gentle with. I've always hated that kind of alienizing/delicatizing (whatever the word is) of women. And some desire for male equality in me wanted the girls to grow up as well. (And lord knows i hate being on men's side generallly But the Da In part of the story just infuriated me. In an era of sexual equality and fairness, the treatment of women and our feelings in this drama was just too poetic and psychobabbly to be tolerated. Am glad it's over.

Totally agree. Kept hoping there were gonna be a Min-Guu & Su-Ah tie in with Da-In. Maybe them 4 couples meet accidentally for lunch. Just like they had the Jin-Guu & Se Young tie in when Jin-Guu met with Da-In while his uncle was throwing out the trash.
Then Su-Ah can go all "gangster" on Da-In and tell her to toughen up. Felt that Su-Ah was more mature in handling relationships than Da-In.
In fact, I felt that both Se Young and Su-Ah grew up more stronger, while Da-In continued to be weak.

I liked this ending as well. I suspected the things wouldn't end the way our 19 year old wanted it to, but that's life ... he's only 19 and if I married the girl I was "in love" with when I was 19, my life would have been a living hell. We still see each other and laugh about how we both dodged that bullet.
Soo Ah was actually quite mature beyond her years and able to recognize that at this age, they both need to be concentrating on figure out who they are and what they want to be.
I'm glad that in the end, friendship survived the heartbreak. while there were obvious secrets going on, there was no malicious intent present, and everyone involved knew that ... time was just needed to get passed the initial hurt.
A good show for sure ... and the wife and I enjoyed watching it.

I don't think anyone realistically expected the 19 yo to "settle down" and get married, just like the 9 yo.
That's why at that age it's called "puppy love". How is it that you can proclaim to someone you've never met you are their "destiny" and "I love you". That's the whole point of dating some one is to get to know them. Min-guu saying those things just shows Su-Ah just how childish he really is. Even the confession song, while spectacular, how could he say that after only just failing on the destiny test.
All that just reminded us of just how foolish our first love really was. Which was why I wished the they could still be together, discover each other, and strengthen each other. Though, I understand that it can also be a distraction.
Psychologically, girls are more advanced than boys until the college years, and add the fact that Su-Ah is two years older than Min-Guu. Su-Ah is totally badass to pursue her dreams rather than just go clubbing around like her friends. What made her change ? That's why I'd like to know more.
Both See Young and Da-In haven't pursued their dream. See Young wanted to travel abroad and write books, but had to wait till she finished college. And Da-In.... Well, she hasn't opened up yet. We need to wait another 10 years.

I'm so glad Plus9 is over. I know I'm the only one here who didn't like this show so anyone reading this will just wonder why didn't I dropped. I have a hard time dropping shows after ep 6, I guess it's curiosity what makes me stay.
It's so strange that everyone who liked it seemed to enjoy the realistic feel they had, while I pretty much felt it was so unrealistic all the time, from the situations to the characters, everything seemed unbelievable to me.
I hope at least more people apart of the fans felt the same and that leads to tvN pay more attention to the writing of the shows instead of the superficial elements so they can go back to getting higher ratings.

Thank you for the recap LollyPip. Plus Nine Boys, a lovely drama that is near and dear to me and it holds a special place in my heart. This past August my age became plus nine.
All in all P9B was a very touching and endearing drama from the beginning of Episode 1 till the end of Episode 14. An impressive cast with wonderful chemistry for the most part, great storylines with undercurrent feels of everyday-slice-of-life realism, and a refreshing and satisfying ending for most of the characters.
Really adored the scenes of them just hanging out as family and even bickering with one another regardless of whether they were situated in the living room, at the kitchen table, or elsewhere in their residence.
Awwwwwwww the last episode: Soo-Ah shed tears. If anyone should have been forced to cry in the finale - my preference and vote would be for Da-In.
The part where Dong-Goo watched for the first time Dad's video with the rest of the family was indeed heartwarming, moving, and poignant.
Never did warm up to Da-In. And it had nothing to do with her being reticent, a divorcee, nor a single mother. Time and time again during the course of the drama we witnessed Da-In interacting freely with others in an adult manner as the owner and operator of a small business. My aversion to the character stemmed from the fact that whatever issues/concerns Da-In encountered or felt toward Kwang Soo (maybe date/maybe not date) in her personal life; she made a point of not expressing or communicating her thoughts to him. Hard to turn a blind eye to it, support it, and accept her behavior/actions as somehow desirable in a relationship.
Kwang-Soo let his past with Da-In keep him from actively living in the present. That's why I truly wanted to see Kwang-Soo let Da-In go, move on from her, and find someone else. Didn't happen. Alas like in life, sometimes the person we want or may think is best for someone, is not the person they end up choosing for themselves.
:) High Marks:
Music selections & Indie music featured throughout the drama.
Kim Young-Kwang & Kyung Soo-Jin as Kang Jin-Goo (29) & Ma Se-Young
