Legal thriller Punch lines up supporting cast
by javabeans
With Kim Rae-won now settled as lead, legal thriller Punch is lining up the rest of its cast, and three names are currently in the headlines as “probable but not 100% confirmed yet” selections: Kim Ah-joong (Sign), Ohn Joo-wan (Surplus Princess), and Seo Ji-hye (49 Days).
Punch is the next drama to come from The Chaser and Empire of Gold’s writer, Park Kyung-soo, and the high quality of the scriptwriting of those dramas accounts for a lot of the buzz about this project. Park’s dramas are filled with corruption, shady ethics, and deeply flawed characters, and that makes for intense watching. Punch looks like it’ll fit right into Park’s oeuvre, described as one man’s final punch thrown at the world: A prosecutor with six months left to live decides to take down crooked bigwigs on his way out.
The role offered to Kim Ah-joong is that of a prosecutor who turned down numerous lucrative offers to join prestigious firms, opting to fight for justice instead. That ought to make her a welcome ally to Kim Rae-won’s hero, since something tells me he’ll need a friendly corner to retreat to when he takes aim at big people with lots to lose.
Ohn Joo-wan and Seo Ji-hye are also considering the drama favorably, though with the first script reads scheduled for the weekend it sounds like contracts are very nearly signed for all three actors. No word yet on their characters, but I hope they’ll be meaty; both Ohn and Seo are promising actors but haven’t had a lot of roles I’ve loved them in. Ohn was super adorable in Surplus Princess recently, but that drama as a whole underperformed and got cut, and the less we say of his previous show Sword and Flower, the better. As for Seo, I’ve thought her underutilized in her recent projects and would like to see her in more roles.
Punch is directed by PD Lee Myung-woo of You’re All Surrounded, Warrior Baek Dong-soo, and Daemul — credits that I hope counter the fact that he also did Fashion King. The drama, which also stars Jo Jae-hyun, will take over the Monday-Tuesday SBS slot from Secret Door beginning in December.

IKR!! I really like Seo Jihye but she hasn't really had any lead roles in recent years. So glad she's back to prime time!

Kim Ah Joong turned down PnP only to be another prosecutor in Punch.
After watching dramas from police's perspective (YAAS), lawyer's (ANL), and now currently prosecutor's (Pride and Prejudice) and maybe Punch too, I only need drama from judge's perspective...

I would watch a drama about a judge: How to deal with the temptation of corruption & the death threats. Also when your moral compass & the law are in conflict.

Get out of my head, Mary (or - more likely - I should get out of yours. Oops! Sorry for the unannounced visit.)
I want Song Jae Rim in a series where he plays a gleefully cheesy guy who unwittingly - and incorrectly - becomes the target of a sinister, shadowy spy group. So he has to find the real target, team up with him, and take down the bad guys, all while providing quippy dialog and comic relief.
There could also be some shower scenes. You know, if the show felt they were necessary (they are.)
My television wishes are maybe a little too specific, but I don't care.

I need him in Bad Guys Season 2.
He can be the newbie cop who's too chatty and always spouting cheesy lines to score with the ladies.

No, he needs to be a 'mad dog' con artist who charms everyone with his soft smile and cheesy lines...and systematically steals everything from them while they're not looking. He could always have an angle and a glib answer, and be a cheerful villain (they're always so much fun to watch.)

The supporting cast looks good too! Didn't watch The Chaser but I love Empire of Gold (though was a bit disappointed by the performance of a certain actor) so I do look forward to this one!!

I have a copy of Fashion King lying around unwatched, courtesy of my mother-in-law... Is it worth watching? I was kinda turned off by the cover..ha. Now, with GF and your comments, I think I already know the answer to my own question.

Omg, hold on. Kim Rae-won is the lead????? I totally missed the part where Go Soo turned down the role. Loved Empire of Gold but thought Go Soo could've been better, so I'm 10x more excited now.
Despite the mess that was Sword and Flower, I thought Ohn Joo-wan played a great King Bojang. He made the character pretty likable for me. And I thought he was cute in Surplus Princess too but the role didn't give him much go on. Oh I've missed Seo Ji-hye, haven't watched her anything in years.
Also, wasn't the writing the downfall of Fashion King?? I didn't get through the first episode but that's pretty much what I gathered from everyone's reactions. I'll cross my fingers for this one!

Excited about the possible reunion of Jo Jae-Hyeon and Kim Rae-won (last drama together was Snowman). I hope the script is strong and well written, and the PD is fabulous.
