Lee Min-ho and Kim Rae-won’s mudslinging turf war
by girlfriday
I know, you want to know if there’s actual mud. There is! There’s plenty for the boys to roll around in and then some. The first teaser is out for the action noir movie Gangnam 1970, formerly known as Gangnam Blues (boo, I liked the first title better), starring Lee Min-ho (Heirs) and Kim Rae-won (Thousand Day Promise) as gangsters who cash in on the development of Seoul’s Gangnam district in the 1970s. The teaser is gritty and action-packed, as expected, and features a large-scale rainy mud battle as its centerpiece.
The newest project from director Yoo Ha is considered the final chapter of his street gang trilogy, which includes Once Upon a Time in High School (2004, starring Kwong Sang-woo) and A Dirty Carnival (2006, starring Jo In-sung). They’re not continuous stories, but just similar in theme and genre — bromance, gangsters, and lots of action.
Lee Min-ho and Kim Rae-won play orphans who grew up together as the closest of friends, who consider each other no different from blood brothers. At a time when real estate development could literally make a person rich overnight, they set out to make something of themselves, full of ambition and hot-blooded youth. As gangsters who muscle their way up to the top, each grows stronger, richer, and more powerful… But eventually they find themselves on warring sides of the battle to control Gangnam.
Their deadly battle is set against a backdrop of seemingly endless opulence when people’s fortunes were made in an instant and it seemed that dreams really did come true. Sigh, the modest beginnings of these gangster movies always make me so sad to think of the shattered bromance to come. Something tells me that the ambition-fueled betrayal between our two brothers will make it clear that dreams come true, but only at a steep price.
Gangnam 1970 hits theaters in November.

Well it IS the 70s. And yet none of the fashion I saw in that trailer is as shudder-inducing as LMH's post-California, out-of-school wardrobe in Heirs.

Actually, most are in black suits.
I remember that period where the men's 1970 style was checked polyester suits and shiny patterned polyester shirts with big collars and bell bottom pants in the U.S.Women were wearing mini shirts and platform shoes. Were they different in Korea at that time?
Wonder how the ladies clothes and hairstyles will be in the film?
Looks interesting with both my fave actors!

Lee Min Ho as an adult (or rather Lee Min Ho with no love interest) is something I have to get used to, I see. I don't think I've seen Once Upon a Time in High School but A Dirty Carnival was great.

The teaser looks promising. Even though I am not really a fan of gangster based movies but I will watch it because I have been a faithful Minoz since 2009...oppa~ ?
Also I know the movie's plot is nothing like Gaksital, but when I was watching the teaser I was kinda getting the Gaksital feel. I dunno it's just me.
I really hope this movie turns out good, because even though I LOVE LMH and all but I am not a fan of his choice of recent projects (eg. Faith and Heirs).

According to a production staff who regularly shares updates at LMH DC, the director wrote the script with "anak" as a motif. He's into old pop music. And I guess the lyrics and tone of this song is suitable as the main soundtrack.

Well, it's titled Gangnam 1970 after all and Anak was a big hit in late 1970's (and early 80's) throughout Asia: released in 56 countries, translated into 26 different languages and eventually being topped as #1 in US Billboard for two weeks.
But I agree though, Anak (Child) is such an odd song for an action noir movie..

Whoa! Is this the official teaser? They're using a Filipino song? The song is about a child who was lovingly raised but has lost his way, and the parent, who's singing the song, asks, "why did you end up like this?". Well, since the characters ended up as gangsters, maybe the song is fitting. I was just surprised, that's all. Oooh, I miss badass Min Ho!

LMH taking on a role that didn't feel like he's going backwards career (and age) wise. This is the role he should've taken after the awesome City Hunter.

I enjoyed A Dirty Carnival and love gangster movies, esp. the Korean ones I've seen so I was gonna see this either way but I'm glad it looks this good. I'm certainly not here for LMH but this has a decent chance of removing my distaste for him in everything other than City Hunter and Faith. I initially face-palmed that his "more manly" concept was no more face-lotion but huh I actually see the difference (what's IN that stuff??!). Or I might be blinded by the gangster glow. Anyway, KRW I can see myself rooting for in the end, bias against LMH notwithstanding. Hope we foreigners are looked kindly on and someone is nice enough to put it out quickly. I bet myasiantv.com will have it. *bats eyelashes in shameless flattery*

The trailer looks dumb, to be honest. I mean, really, a bunch of gangsters in suits are going to fight about real estate by hitting each other with sticks in a muddy field? LOL, okay. That totally wasn't filmed for dramatic effect.

No, I saw the whole trailer and I think it's dumb. The ridiculous hitting each other with sticks battle just put it over the top. I'm allowed to have that opinion, yes? Gangsters are violent, but they're not five year old children.

I can't believe how disappointed I am about the change in the title! "Gangnam Blues" was an awesome title. I don't know if I can get as excited about "Gangnam 1970." Here's hoping it's still the same movie.
But who the heck ditches such a good title? Hope this doesn't indicate other poor choices.

Sharing this news here because a few people seem to think all he did to prepare for this role is not using lotion.
Aside from trying to look more rugged by not using lotion, LMH also did martial art training and doing lift to build up muscles months in advance because you know abs and gangster skills don't miraculously grow without training. Because of his busy schedules, he had personal trainers and martial art instructors accompanying him on overseas trips.
This info comes from interviews and fan accounts here and there that he's done this year for other commitments. This movie promotional tour hasn't started yet.

Omo LMH looks awesome! I know Heirs was a career high for him on terms of popularity but his talent was totally wasted on that terrible script. Now, he finally gets to do something worthy of his full potential and he seems to be fully absorbed in his character. I can see the heartbreak, the unwavering determination, the suffering his character has endured just by looking at his eyes for 10 seconds... Hopefully this movie will be a smash hit :D

* If Lee Min-ho gives this film what he's got,
it going to be great. (Hint: Half the energy
that he gives to his fan "meet and greets.")
* I didn't see any distracting pink lip gloss in
the trailer, so we'll be able to concentrate on
the actual story, not fashion faux-pas disasters.
* I think that LMH is going to end up dead at
the end of this one. (Despite his miraculous
recovery from that chest gunshot in "City Hunter"
where he was 99.99% dead at the end.)
*Then it's off to the army, leaving his fans to
wonder what the army will do to him. Besides
make him wear socks. :)
I hope that Gangnam Blues/70 has great success.
Is it too late to call it "Gangnam Wars?"
