King’s Face: Shin Sung-rok in, Seo Joon-young out?
by girlfriday
Here’s the thing, I don’t know whether one actor is replacing the other or if Shin Sung-rok (Trot Lovers, You From Another Star) is just joining the upcoming KBS fusion historical drama The King’s Face, but when you cast Seo Joon-young (Secret Door) as your face-reading fortuneteller, say he’s confirmed, and then cast Shin Sung-rok for that very same role, I’m going to raise an eyebrow and ask what happened to Seo Joon-young. Because you can’t kill him off before he even makes it onscreen!
I won’t rule out the possibility that they’re both in the drama, since they could just be mixing up the various characters in the press releases, and there are no stories about Seo Joon-young dropping the series. On the other hand, it’s not unheard of for a show to just quietly recast a role and hope no one noticed. I NOTICED.
Okay, I do actually like Shin Sung-rok, so I have no beef about this casting in that respect — he’s really versatile and though this is his first historical series, I’m sure he’ll be a really fun face reader. I just wonder how he plans to be in two places at once, since he’s also starring in tvN’s Liar Game, which premieres next week. Time travel? Evil clone? Would explain how he plays both devilish sociopaths and sweet goofy nice guys.
The series stars Seo In-gook (High School King of Savvy) as Prince Gwanghae and tells the story of his transition from an illegitimate prince to a king, with the help of a face reader. Lee Sung-jae plays his father King Seonjo, and Jo Yoon-hee plays the woman that all three men — king, prince, and face reader — love.
Despite plagiarism controversy and injunctions filed against them by the production company behind The Face Reader, the movie that spawned the basic premise, the show has begun shooting this week. Seo In-gook even sustained an injury while practicing a stunt (he took a fist to the eye), and is currently being treated. It isn’t so serious that it’ll affect the filming schedule, so the show will go on. For a show that just barely started rolling cameras, it sure has a lot of backstage drama under its belt, I’ll give it that.
The King’s Face follows Iron Man on Wednesdays and Thursdays in November.

Oh, poor In-guk. A couple articles on his injury, and injuries in general to other actors. A committed bunch.

I'm not sure what effect they were looking for in that photo, but I got a real "How did I get a mosquito bite BEHIND my ear?" vibe.

Well, maybe they're getting around all that by turning it into a sageuk/medical fusion with a whole lot of meta. Yunno something along the lines of:
*starts eerie music and dramatic narrator voice*
"Ancient Egypt pioneered brain surgery... Ancient China invented munitions... But, until now, little has been known of Korea's long and secret history of full facial reconstruction. This is how it all began..."

I'm confused. Though Healer was going to follow Blade Man. I guess it got bumped?! I didn't think that this was coming to drama land until 2015.

I like SSR a lot but I think he shouldn't have accepted this show. I just don't feel it. At all.
Double duty will be only for a month if he is in: We know Joo Won, LJS... who had situations even worst and they managed.
Good luck to everyone even if I won't be watching.

Shin Sung Rok is on an acting spree, and where is Kim Soo Hyun?
not that I complain.
I really wish I could write a drama role for him too. that sarcastic vampire ffor example
he can be funny and creepy at once and he cracks me up.

I also finding myself liking Shin Sung Rok a lot after Trot Lovers. Something about his face and acting enable him to be deathly scary and weirdly endearing at the same time.
I hope he'll get a leading man role soon.

I really don't know what to think of this, other than that pulling double duty on dramas is not a good idea.
But from what I know of tvN, they at least have a chance of having episodes filmed ahead of the air dates for Liar Game, and thankfully SSR has signed this other project now instead of waiting for 4 episodes before the end of Liar Game and a live shoot (i.e. truly no time to do anything but scramble to cover his absence, this way at least the writers of each drama can manage some kind of workaround).

But...but I was waiting for this just for the sake of Seo Joon-young :(
I hope he's still in the project.

I know...Poor Joon-young always gets the shaft, it seems. Maybe there is a rival face-reader? Now that would be fun.

I hope it's an addition because I like Shin and I want my Seo Joon Young too! It would leave a sour taste in my mouth if this production continues to be shady and cut him on top of all the other mess.

Shin Sung Rok are everywhere nowadays. I wonder how long it is gonna take until he gets a lead role, which he is charismatic and talented enough for.
I feel like career wise, his female version is Kim Seul Gi. She is a chameleon actress. She is also busy with 2 dramas every week but lands no lead role yet.
I admit that both of them are not strikingly handsome/pretty but they are two of the most charming and captivating actors/actresses in the industry right now so I hope their talent won't be wasted.

I agree completely.... "charming and captivating". You nailed it.
My first exposure to him was My Love From The Star, where he was totally convincing as an evil SOB; in Trot Lovers completely believable as a good warm-hearted person. Compelling either way.
She's adorable and sucks me in with her acting.

I think SSR is smoking hot and incredibly attractive but that's just me....Kim seul gi otoh is always awesome but I find her to be rather average looking.

But aren't both Sin Sungrok and Seo Joonyoung filming other dramas around the same time that the Face Reader is supposed to air? In which case, whether one actor is replacing the other or both both will be playing face-readers in the same drama, won't there be scheduling conflicts?

Noooooo....this is more cruel that secret door! I do like Shin Sung Rok but I am fine with seeing him in Liar's game. But Seo Yoon young I really hoped to see him soon...His short lived appearance in secret door is just not enough...I believe Seo Joon Young other drama has already finished filming so there should not be any conflicts..Drama gods please grant my wish! He is such a good but underrated actor!
