Jung Yumi joins Oh Ji-ho in Joseon-era servant drama Maids

Cable network JTBC’s next Monday-Tuesday show will be a historical drama called Maids, about the lowest class of servants in the Joseon era. The drama is getting ready for a November launch, and is starting to cast its leading roles — Oh Ji-ho (Ghost-Seeing Detective Cheo-young) has confirmed that he’s accepted the offer to headline, and Jung Yumi (the Mother’s Garden, Rooftop Prince one) has signed on to play his leading lady.

Jung Yumi plays a nobleman’s daughter who’s so beautiful and well-dressed that she has her own fan club of admirers. But a fateful twist sends her family into ruin and she ends up in the lowest class of slaves, where she has to adjust to life as a maidservant. Naturally she has a hard time accepting this as her lot in life, and her character will struggle with being born of the highest class but having to survive by her wits as a lowly maid.

Oh Ji-ho plays a manservant who’s a man of mystery — he purposely keeps his identity a secret, and is a skilled warrior. He’s described as level-headed and charismatic, and he’ll be working on a secret undercover mission unbeknownst to the others around him. Directing is PD Jo Hyun-tak of tvN’s Who Are You, and new writer Jo Hyun-kyung is penning the script.

The drama is described as a modern romance (in sensibility) set in Joseon, where people’s status and class go up and down like a roller-coaster, and the secret and impertinent lives of young noblemen and women and their servants is explored as passionate melodrama. To be honest, the cast isn’t super enticing, but I do really like upstairs-downstairs dramas. Well okay, I like British upstairs-downstairs dramas, but Joseon presents so many of the same class issues between aristocracy and servants that if done well, it could be really intriguing.

Maids follows Yoon-na’s Street on Mondays and Tuesdays, and premieres November 24.

Oh it's THIS jung Yumi! I thought why the other one picked up another role so quickly when she's just finished with her drama?

Premise seems interesting, although oh ji ho has never struck me as the Joseon type of face. He looks too western for ancient garb... Hmm

Me and period dramas don't do well most of the time but again, this channel doesn't produce duds. I like both leads: No big names but charismatic in their own way. I will give this a try.

Looking forward to this, but the trouble with some cable dramas is finding sites that actually sub them in English. Fingers crossed.

I am yet to be able to get into a JTBC drama and I have tried a few.

So for the people watching Yoona's Street, how is it? Is it worth picking up? It's finally getting subbed.

It's one of the best shows airing right now, less serious & dry than your average drama on that channel. Oh, & we are having a blast with the recaps done at 'The Problematic of the Unproblematic' (you can google the blog , if you want to check.)

I agree with others about the quality of Yoona`Street. It is worth watching. But, again, everybody has to watch for themselves to see if it is a show for their taste.

Though I don't see Oh Ji-ho playing mysterious and charasimatic that well, he's decent. And while I hated Jung Yumi's Rooftop Prince character with a passion, I was mildly impressed with the actress and this seems like it'll be her element if its not too cutesy. WAHH WHY CAN'T YOO-NA'S STREET GO ON FOREVER?! It sounds interesting enough but I'm not sure if I can watch a 50 episode drama that is not Yoo-na's Street. Sniff. Maids will have big shoes to fill.

Oddly enough, both OJH and JY's better works were in sageuks.

OJH did a good job in "Chuno" - did not over-act like JH.

And JY kinds stole the show in "Dong Yi" even tho it was for a secondary supporting role.

Oh Ji Ho and Eric is the two name that I think not suit for Saeguk drama. Their face is too modern…LOL. Anyway….good luck for him...

What is "modern" looking and OJH and Eric have completely diff. faces.

Also, OJH looked perfectly fine in "Chuno."

So is this drama gonna be like a sageuk version of Downton Abbey? If it is, I just might have to check it out.

And because I really can never resist watching Oh Jiho and his dimpled smile.

LOVING MAIDS TO BITS AND PIECES RIGHT NOW! I love it MORE now than I ever did before! This is so good, maybe because I wasn't expecting it. Now on Episode 4, and I can't wait, LITERALLY, for the next episodes!!!
