Han Ji-min confirms Jekyll and Me opposite Hyun Bin

We’ve got a leading lady and a title change for Hyun Bin’s new drama Hyde, Jekyll, Me, now going by the shorter title Jekyll and Me. That isn’t an indication that they’re dropping the split personality angle, since it’s still a rom-com about a woman who ends up in a love triangle with one man’s two personalities. I think I prefer the thematically relevant title a little more, since it evokes more of a Me-Myself-and-Irene kind of feel.

In any case, Han Ji-min (Rooftop Prince) has now signed on to the romantic comedy, where she’ll play the leader of a circus troupe. Well points for originality. Hyun Bin plays a third-generation chaebol who runs a theme park called Wonderland, and she’s the head of the circus troupe that’s such a money pit that the hero wants to get rid of it, figuring there’s no difference whether it stays or goes.

We’re not told what kind of act she does (she’s just called the troupe’s headlining actress), and she’ll go up against the hero to save her poverty-stricken circus and revamp the show. Hyun Bin’s character is an odd boss who doesn’t ever drink, drive, gamble, or leave home, which I guess means that he lives at Wonderland too.

He harbors a trauma from his childhood, which resulted in a split personality — one the coldest meanest man in the world, and the other the nicest, sweetest man ever. He’s vowed to never date or marry, but that’ll change when the heroine learns to love both men and tame his wilder unruly side. Yes, but does it count as cheating if she dates both of them?

Jekyll and Me will be a 20-episode drama directed by the PD of 49 Days and Yawang, and penned by the writer of Alice in Cheongdam-dong. It follows Pinocchio on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning in January.

Nooooooo! Why her? I've disliked her in everything I've seen her in and she has to star opposite Hyun Bin not once but twice in one year? Sigh. Will watch anyway.

Have you seen her in The Fatal Encounter, though? She's no Candy there, and no love interest either - she plays his (step) grandmother!

(can't say I liked the film itself all that much though)

Agree. I like her since Jewels in the Palace, LOVE her in Cain & Abel, Padam-Padam, RTP, and what's another one: YiSan..!
And w/ Beannie, I'm sure it's gonna be awesome regardless.

I wish her good luck.

She just starred with him in his post-army movie. He must have liked her acting or like working with her. I can't imagine that he has no input in this.
When Misaeng was casting, didn't veteran actor Lee Sung Min say that he wanted a Nice person for the lead, and then they got Im SW, who Lee said was nice?
I'm going to trust Binnie and hope this will turn out really well.

True, but then Master's Sun and maybe 50% of dramas have a similar story line. Hero's traumatic past and prickly chaebol-ness, no marriage until candy comes along, fall in love and change...

Its all execution and surely Hyun Bin will bring something new in here. Plus I'm so looking forward to the triangle wherein I'm hating one guy and realizing he's the same guy i love. That'll be confusing, heh.

I like the circus environment. Reminds me of one of my fave movies ever: The Greatest Show on Earth. The boss here was also a cold blooded greedy grumpy guy who in reality cared for the troop. Will she be a trapezist then? That would be cool.

I wish it was someone else. But I'm glad it's not an actress who can't act like the currently working with a Hallyu star in his comeback drama after military *ahem*.

Anyway, I kinda love the circus part in this all. I want it to be super whacky and crazy but meaningful and moving. Hopefully, HJM can bring in the funny along with the romance. I don't like any of the PD-writer's previous work but this is Hyun Bin we're talking about! He hopefully picked this over tons of other projects because it's great.

Actors most probably pick projects because it will give them an opportunity to shine. Secret garden wasn't great, not even good for the most part, but he did very well with that character, I'm betting it's the same here.
Having a leading lady that he will easily outshine again won't hurt either. >:)

I think picking a challenging role is important but most big stars also pick a project that would most likely succeed - whether in Korea or overseas. Heirs - for example - sounded crappy even on paper but a whole lot of big stars took it on because they knew it would be a commercial success.

Secret garden is very debatable because some will vouch for its greatness and others would counter how bad it is. I felt Hyun Bin picked that up because sure it's a role that challenges him as an actor, but it's also written by Kim Eun-sook who's enough reason to pull even someone like Jang Dong-gun back to TV.

Required fields are marked *

Of course, commercial success is good and they will try to combine the two. However commercial success doesn't mean quality and after AGD, SG and Heirs I wonder how anyone can still think of Kim Eun-sook as a good writer but anyway, I'm just glad she is not the writer here.

The writing in SG was just plain awful, but bad writing is no barrier to high ratings (see "Melrose Place" for the US).

YFAS had very average writing, but it was an even bigger hit.

Is that a general consensus? I mean I never knew him so MLG is my first try and I've only watched the first 5 eps but in general I felt he was pretty flat and amateurish, just screaming when he was supposed to convey emotion. Is there even a professional drama critic community or is it just fans talking? I'm just curious.

Well, acting is generally a perception. But Rain being amazing is not just a fan's perspective. That's a general consensus of the public given he's done two Lee Kyung-hee melodramas that's usually very challenging. His character in Runaway, Plan B is one of the most difficult characters to play with the see-saw of emotions. He's also done a slew of dramas/movies getting not just in Korea but outside as well and got some good acting reviews. But I stopped following Rain's career when he stopped going dramas in 2010.

He doesn't have a good image but his acting isnt a reason Knetz hate on him for. I personally find him charismatic, fantastic and one of the best singer-actor out there and I haven't heard of too many that feel otherwise. But anyway, this is completely off topic from the subject of the thread so I'll stop.

0

Ugh, I may hate deleted my previous reply. But anyway...

Well acting in general is a perception. But Rain is considered a good actor by the general public - if you find that legit. He's starred in some really challenging roles, two of which were written by Lee Kyung-hee - her melodramas need actors who can covey emotions to the T and Rain managed that perfectly. In Plan B, I thought his character was one of the most challenging ones out there since there was a whole see-saw of emotions he needed to portray which he basically aced. He's also starred in Hollywood movies and got some good reviews for his acting. I stopped following his career when he stopped doing dramas back in 2010, so I'm not familiar with all his projects.

But anyway, Rain has gotten a lot of hate from the Knetz and media for very many things but acting has rarely been one of them. I personally find him fantastic and charismatic and don't know of many people who don't. But anyway, this is completely off topic from the subject of this post, so I'll stop.

I dont think there's a “professional drama critic” or something of that nature but Rain is regarded as an actor instead of an 'idol' by Koreans. He's been an actor for a decade now and he always gets slammed for his real life [erm… situations (lol)] rather than his acting chops. You wont hear many people saying “why is he acting, he should stick to singing” because he's a really good actor and mostly everyone acknowledges that. Maybe you dont feel the emotion in MLG because other than him, everyone else basically sucks in it? JB and GF's last podcast elaborates on why he’s so good but awkward amongst the chain of bad. Just in case you havent heard (:

0

Thanks Mandy and alwaysaround. Yes, I know it is OT, I won't elaborate either. Maybe I'll look for a good movie with him and I'll change my perception of him. :)

0

The most common criticism that I heard is that he's ugly lol (from NB). Honestly, I don't think he's good looking too. But I don't think he qualifies for ugly either.

0

Agree. Rain is flat in MLG, like he is just going through the motions. But all actors and actresses who have been in the acting industry for more than 10 years get a pass. It is a respect to seniors and cultural thing.

0

@Lixie: Np! You should see Cyborg, he was great in it and the movie was great too (:

@neverending: LOL, thats funny. I've only ever heard of how sexy or hot he is (I've mostly followed his career even after moving out of Korea years ago). Even in Dramabeans latest podcast, GF and JB were just talking about well spent hour watching Rain being hot lol. But some of the NB peeps are probably L fans so... A person's looks depends on the person looking, but Rain's acting has always been up there from critics and audiences. Basically, I'm just jealous of KTH right now lmao.

I think the only way this drama is going to work would be to embrace it's quirky elements. Because on paper this sounds really bad.

Honestly, my excitement for this show waned when Han Ji Min was confirmed for the role too. I pretty much stopped checking the news for this show. I like her but she's not my favorite actress. There are about six other actresses i'd rather see in the role.

But visually, they match really well and this pairing makes more sense than some others I would have preferred. And her character has a lot of potential to be fun I guess.
