Surplus Princess cut down to 10 episodes
by javabeans
Sad news for fans of Surplus Princess: The silly tvN comedy about a mermaid who joins the human realm to find love has just gotten a cut-down in episode count. Planned for 14 episodes originally, it’ll now end with 10 instead, wrapping up its run early next month.
That’s a pretty sudden decision, especially since the drama just aired its eighth episode yesterday. That means the production is already filming its ninth episode… so they’ve only got one more episode in which to wrap up everything and reach some sort of resolution. (I suppose they could do the Vampire Idol thing and leave the show on a defiant note by ending with more questions than answers—as if giving their broadcaster the big middle finger—but otherwise, they’ll have to scramble.)
According to a source with tvN, this cut-down order is actually a move to improve the show’s quality, because they felt that it would be better for “increasing dramatic entertainment and story quality.” Excuse me while I complete my eye-roll. I’m sure it has everything to do with creative vision and not, say, the drama’s sliding viewership ratings. While Surplus Princess isn’t alone in experiencing a dip in ratings (tvN’s current crop hasn’t been able to match the buzz factor or the numbers of its previous hits), it has not broken the 1% ratings barrier, starting off with a 0.84% and slipping down to 0.54%.
Surplus Princess is a bit silly for my liking, but it’s still an easy, mindless watch for me and I’ve found enough to keep me going with it despite the flaws. (It’s messy, a little meandering, and the heroine can come off rather dim.) But considering that this is a show that’s on once a week in a slot of its own, I’d have thought tvN would let it run its full course. Well, I suppose it could be the truth that this is really motivated by story concerns, but that’s not a bet I’d be willing to take.
The drama, which stars Jo Boa as the mermaid-turned-human and Ohn Joo-wan and Song Jae-rim as two humans who get entangled in her quest for love, will wrap up on October 9.

tvN has a twitter. Maybe we can tweet them not to cut the show. Haha. I always look forward to this show every week. My weekly dose of craziness. This is such a bummer.

I'm really disappointed, but as long as they put Hye Young and Dae Bak together I'm good. Which ever guy Ha Ni gets with is fine with me.
This is the first love triangle where I'm equally invested in both male leads and not in a non-interested sort of way. Dramaland give me this equation/ambiguous OTP feels again in a longer running drama. Please!
Gasp! could that same ambiguity have turned viewers off and contributed to the ratings? hmmm

Me too!! lol I won't complain as long as Park Dae Bak and Hye Young are together! I'm actually surprised that this is the first time in dramaland recently that I like both male leads!!!

let's face it, diminished scenes of a favourite (SJR- aka chef SK) is not going to make a show soar in ratings...

This is lighthearted and cute... Too bad but I'd like to find out if our mermaid turns to foam or ends up with a beloved human. Whoever she ends up with, I like them both. Too bad, only ten episodes... This is do light and no stress on my heart. I just hope the human witch gets what she deserves!

but i soooo love this drama! they should have made it a twice a week drama rather than weekly. Ratings could have slid because viewers got tired waiting for the next episode. So sad =(

It's likely their largest audience was American. We're used to the super goofy, and personally I adored this show. It was friggin funny, bubbly, and YAY! for a girl who just takes what she wants in a cute way.
Song Jae Rim, I'm going to miss a month of seeing him every week. My weekend just got ruined :(

NOOOOOO!! Not fair! this drama is perfect 10 episodes isn't nearly enough! U_U ugh I finally had a drama that didn't make me burst into tears every five minutes (I'm looking at you 'It's Okay, It's Love') it was a welcome and much needed breath of fresh air. *sigh* I'm so disappointed. oh and I love han-ni much better with the cook. his eyes are amazing

I've been put off by a majority of bad dramas. Finally, I find one I actually don't despise, and it gets effed up the b by the network. Meanwhile, there is this other stinking pile of garbage that's getting 50 episodes. Thank you.
This show caught me off guard with its characters. It was funny and fresh, presented in a way I haven't seen much of in the way of kdramas complete with the post doodles and cartoons. More left of center. Good story, awesome secondary characters, esp the cam girl roommate, soo refreshing to see the nuances in that role. She is a great actor. The regular kdrama tropes and crappy romantic bits plagued the show, but I enjoyed it anyway. Why is life soo difficult...

why oh why oh why oh why?!!?!??!
Even though I know this show is not technically good or better then other shows, I somehow, someway look forward to this show every week and watch it as soon as the subs are in. Heck I even look forward to it more then Fated To Love You and It's Ok That's Love even though these two shows had way better everything (I wated all three at the same time). The mermaid story line was just more compelling for me, I just see so much potential in it and so much room for surprises.
There's no way they can satisfy me with 2 episodes..."cutting it to make it better" is a load of crap. they just started to get into things, so many sideline stories and characters to grow....now this show won't have good rating in my book, not because of it's fault but because it got cut short and forced to become crappy.

Sigh.. I watch my Kdrama in marathons, It is sad to hear something i was looking so forward to is being abandoned as a project. Before i even watch my first episode. I thought the whole premise was a fantastic idea. A come to life fairy tale. Did some fox program guru's leave fox and to go korea? This is akin to canceling family guy, dark angel, futurama and other canceled fox classics. A sad day for kdrama when the melodrama is because of programming instead of a good drama. Whoever canceled this shame on you.

This is BS! I really enjoy this and yesterday I was counting the weeks of it until the end just to find out 5 minutes ago, it was cut to 10. I mean, WTF and FY TVN!! How will they compress the whole story in just 2 more episodes?! I want Si Kyung and Hani to have more interaction, but no~ we will cut the drama instead. Great... one of my year's favorite drama is going to end before its story begins...

This is sad news, I live in the USA and I look forward to this show every week. I think Jo Bo Ah is awesome! Also I love the chef and Hyung Mung. This love triangle is so cute! I also dont think it is fair to cut it so short, how can they wrap this up in one episode when they havent even progressed her love story with Hyung Mung that much? Big and that other girl are so cute too! I feel like they got more of a love story than Ha Ni and Hyung Mung. This is not fair T_T
