Modern Farmer puts rockers out to pasture
by girlfriday
Even with its not-quite-sensical premise, SBS weekend miniseries Modern Farmer continues to make me chuckle with its teasers and posters. The comedy is inexplicably about a rock band becoming farmers, by which I mean, we’re not really told why on earth these boys are forced from idol band stardom in the big city to tending cabbages in podunk nowheresville. They just are. I’m pretty sure wacky hijinks are the entirety of the show’s concept, but hey, rockers in cabbage patches is maybe just weird enough to get us all to watch anyway?
The 20-episode drama stars Lee Hong-ki (Bride of the Century) as the lead singer and guitarist of rock band Exo, not to be confused with idol boy band Exo… Well technically, they ARE meant to be confused, since the two teasers below use footage from idol group Exo’s appearances on Inkigayo for a bait-‘n’-switch to our fictional rockers, heh. Their band’s name is short for Excellent Souls, though by the looks of it, they’re more troublesome than excellent.
Lee Shi-un (Answer Me 1997) is the band’s bass guitarist, Park Min-woo (Could We Love) plays the keyboardist, and Kwak Dong-yeon (Age of Feeling) is the maknae and drummer. The posters continue the show’s focus on the meta, much like the first teaser, and read: “What, Lee Hong-ki is going to farm cabbage?” In one he’s holding a head of cabbage like a purse, accompanied by faux fashion commentary: “You have to at least carry something like this to be the leader of a rock band.” It’s certainly quirky, but I kinda like it.
Modern Farmer follows Feel-Good Day and premieres October 11.

PWAHAHAHAHA
It looks hilarious! ^_____^ Hope they can sustain the fun for 20 episodes.
Bonus: I can now bait my EXO-obsessed sister with "EXO" pics which show Lee Hong-ki's fake band instead. Nyehehehe~

LOL, I swear that cabbage is so out of place, it makes me laugh. The posters are really bright, almost reminding me of Trot Lovers, but I hope it's much better than that (maybe I'm just a major odd ball, but the only parts I liked in TL were the amnesia scenes - I felt the angst, what can I say?).
Anyway, this drama is so weird without actually sounding bad, so I'm giving it a try. Plus I will forever have a soft spot for Lee Hong-ki, so there's that too.

This looks ridiculous...and intentionally so. I think it's going to be a blast! It will be nice to just have some fun in my drama lineup.

But it is a premise already done before? Granted, a variety show and not a drama but then every one knows variety shows are scripted and staged.
Johnny`s idol boy band TOKIO (yes, they play instruments too) has a variety show called THE TETSUWAN DASH which is already running for years Now and really have high ratings - the members work in a farm, build stuff, etc. There is actually a gag of the group being farmers as their `main` job and that their idol work is more part-time.

This. Can't believe it took so look for Korean producers to put together something like it in one form or another. That show started in the late 90s.

yes! this is what i thought when i heard the synopsis for this drama. i was thinking they probably based it on tokio, japanese idol band that plays instruments, and their variety show the tetsuwan dash.

I have little patience when shows do non-sensical / contrived things while trying to pretend they are realistic or even sort of realistic... but those that are flamboyantly and unapologetically whacky even if it makes no sense I'm game for. Cabbage-rock universe, definitely giving you a try.

Wow, those posters look TERRIBLE. I hope they're intentionally bad because I've never seen an SBS poster look that graphically-challenged before.
That being said, this certainly sounds like it will be...something. Good is up in the air for now - but it does seem to be aiming for a fun show that doesn't take itself seriously and which will poke fun at idols a little like You're Beautiful. I've always appreciated that Lee Hongki seems to have such a good sense of humour about that. Fingers crossed it will be fun.

I'm guessing something happens to Lee Hong-ki's character? He gets depressed or something and decides to go farm for a change of pace? A little far-fetched? Maybe. :) LOL. Looking forward to this!

Hongki revealed that his band in the drama was facing disbandment (due to financial woes maybe) and when his character found out about a plot of land his grandmother have, the band decided to head to the village to plant cabbage in order to raise fund for a new album! XD!!!

Can I just say how THRILLED I am to see Lee Shi Un in another show? He was very nearly my favorite part of Answer Me 1997, and considering how amazing that whole cast was, I think that's really saying something about his talent. I'll be tuning in just to see him - though LMK is a nice treat as well, of course.
