Lee Soo-hyuk up to play the other man in Valid Love

Valid Love is the new tvN Monday-Tuesday drama from the writer of My Name Is Kim Sam-soon that’s currently courting Uhm Tae-woong and Han Ji-min to play a married couple that hits a rough patch when the wife’s eye wanders. Enter: Lee Soo-hyuk (High School King of Savvy), he of greener pastures.

The new romantic comedy from writer Kim Do-woo (Sam-soon, What’s Up Fox, Me Too Flower) and PD Han Ji-seung (Alone in Love) is about a woman who meets her future husband while in high school — she’s a student and he’s her biology teacher. We don’t know when they get married, so I’ll hold out hope that it isn’t icky. After being married for a while, she meets a new man who sparks her feelings and naturally, complications ensue.

Lee Soo-hyuk has been offered the role of a young attractive carpenter who’s oozing with charisma. He also harbors a painful family scar, because well-adjusted young men are just unheard of in dramaland. He pretty much sounds like his High School King of Savvy character with a more blue-collar occupation, but I guess when you’re always playing the romantic spoiler in a love triangle, the only thing that changes is your job. Lee Soo-hyuk is still far from great, but he’s been getting better and better with every role (and his bromance with Seo In-gook in Savvy made up for a lot).

None of the actors has signed on the dotted line, but I like the potential casting so far, and am mostly trusting the writer to deliver a solid rom-com. Valid Love follows My Secret Hotel in October.

I'm so over him being a second lead. He deserves better because he's already proven to be better. What's sad is that we wouldn't have this problem if he was an idol. Just sayin'.

It's time for his dare to be great moment.

The truth has been spoken. No matter how you look at it, idols have it too easy.

He delivered a great performance on Savvy, can't he "win" for once ? Let's not have him forever be stuck in 2nd lead roles [at best]. Take a risk on the vampire puppy, KDramaland !

I think he's just like Bae Soobin. Always the third wheel. Most of the hit drama he was in, he was always either the kind guy or the bad man but either way, he always ends up with no one.

This is good news. I'm so torn as to how to feel about this drama because I love and trust the writer and PD. They've worked on some of my favorite dramas, but the description of this is still not my thing. I'll have to wait for the teasers to get a better idea, I guess. I'll be optimistic though :)

I wish he'd get to play a different sort of character. Or acted in dramas that I'm actually interested in, which this one isn't – hate the student-teacher set-up (regardless of when they got married), hate love-triangles and no one that seems to go direction of cheating even more so.

Wish I could say I had confidence in the writer but I never quite warmed to Sam Soon because I LOATHED the love triangle/quadrangle there and couldn't stand the female second lead (and was plain bored by the male one). Had some serious issues with What's Up Fox too, only Me Too Flower I found okayish. Same for the PD's Alone in Love, which I dropped after few episodes. (I know I'm going against the norm here, since Sam Soon and What's Up Fox were both very popular).

..and I used to think I'm the only one in the dramaverse who didn't like Sam-soon. I had a lot issues with this drama including the character of the lead girl. But I'd refrain from going into details for the sake of the fans as I know it doesn't feel good when people criticize your favorite drama :)

sam soon is not necessarily my fave drama but there were things i appreciated Esp During Those Times..when it was relatively "new". Im not sure when u guys got to watch them, but yeah i think some dramas lose some of their "sparkle" when u watch (or rewatch) them at a different time, or after being exposed to other, esp newer, dramas :-) nonetheless, whenever u got to watch them, it really is personal taste that matters..to each his/her own, respect! :-D

This is so true and also kinda sucks since those dramas came first (and some were groundbreaking stuff) and they deserve their dues. But after watching so many dramas, it does become difficult to watch some of the old stuff. I myself am having trouble getting through Sassy Girl Chun Hyang and My Girl because the production value was really not that great back then.

Required fields are marked *

That's not necessarily true. Truly good stuff is still memorable even when new shiny things have come after it. Maybe the sound/image quality won't be HD, or the fashion will be way too retro, but the drama manages to shine anyway.

This, by the way, is not what I think happened with Kim Sam-soon. That drama is horribly dated now, and even then wasn't exactly good either. It did make a difference, considering the shows that were airing back then, but different doesn't mean Good to me. Did it stand out? Yes, however I don't think that makes it a masterpiece. In fact, many of the clichés that destroyed its narrative, are the same that caracterize bad dramas these days - annoying dynamic between the leads, draggy non sensical second leads, WTF obstacles for the OTP, jerk male lead that NO ONE would accept in real life, noble idiocy, fabricated conflict to drag the plot. As a cherry on top, I wasn't a fan of Sam-soon either.

I watched it in 2009, by the way :/

You are right on point here. Surprising that all the comments before you missed it.

What makes classics classic? It's the timeliness. It's the universality. So, no matter when someone catches it, no matter how someone catches it, it is always a classic.

On the opposite end of the scale lies what I call flash in the pan. Being horribly and painfully dated is one common aspect. It induces scream when you revisit them or meet them for the first time after its novelty wears off. You wonder what the hell they were thinking back then. My prime example of this group is Jackie's pillbox hat.

As for My Name Is KSS, I managed the first 30 minutes or so of it. But that was long enough to swear me off of the lead actress as well as Kdramas centering around rich but broken boy vs. poor but lucky-as-hell Candy girl.

0

But, but, but. It'd be really nice to know why you didn't like it. I really liked the lead girl. I didn't think much about her the first time, but the second time I watched the show, I really appreciated how fleshed out and earnest I found the character to be. I thought Kim Sun-ah did a great job with it.

I think if you can manage to maintain a respectful tone, even people who really like the drama will not mind listening to your critique. If anything, I feel like hearing a contrasting perspective would only help deepen people's understanding of the show.

And I think there are many people who loved some aspects of it and didn't like others. You might be surprised at how much people might actually see sense in what you are about to say.

As for myself, I am curious now. Would love to listen to what you feel about it. Bring on all the details. :)

@jhu

I watched it long ago...3/4 years probably? So I don't remember much about it. Apart form the issues with the seconds leads as many have already mentioned I also disliked the two lead characters.

I understand that the concept of this drama was really fresh when it came out, but when I watched it I was put off by many clichés the plot contained.
For example, I still remember the scene where the lead girl got drunk, vomited and I think even urinated(?)!! and no matter how much I tried I just couldn't understand how the guy fell for her after such an experience..I'm sorry if it sounds wrong to you but that's just how I felt. There were few other incidents like this which I found quite non-appealing.
I also think the she lacked resolve. Unless my memory betrays me, she promised quite a few times to the lead guy that she won't quit her job irresponsibly because of their personal problems but broke it each time. I tried think of fierceness positively but such actions made it harder for me to admire her in any way.
The lead guy was also another typical chaebol jerk if I remember correctly. Overall I failed to care for any of the characters so...:)

sorry that I can't remember more right now.

Ah...I see what you mean. I entered the show following a lot of hype, and was surprised that it did not actually live up to set expectations. Really enjoyed it still.

And hahaha. About all the vomiting and urinating. It was a hallmark of the early 2000s TV shows and movies I think to have people throwing up, defecating, urinating every which way. I was quite amused at how graphically all such things were shown. My first impressions of the k-drama world actually.

One scene I cannot shake off is from the movie 100 Days with Mr Arrogance where, at a party, people make this cocktail out of nails, dandruff, and what not, and dare others to drink it. Grotesque stuff. Ha.

KSA did play a loud, obnoxious, not easily likeable person. And she was bullied quite a bit by the hero (he was the one I had major beef with). If I were working for a man-boy like him, I'd have quit long before she did.

But in spite of dolling out blatant acts of disgust like that, I think the actress still pulled off a character that proved to be rather endearing for me. Struck me as a very sincere person who was tired of being pushed around, but still had the goodness to...let that happen? I know a lot of people don't like this kind of a person. But I found that she has quite a high threshold for assholery (re: chaebol guy) and that I admired.

I watched Sam Soon after I'd already seen quite a few dramas. I didn't have so many issues with the female lead, but with respect to the love triangle/quadrangle it just had all things I can't stand, the kind of tropes that just annoy me. Honestly, my biggest gripe in the drama world is an ex that thinks s/he has rights, and we had grand case of that one in the drama.

I hate this kind of character even more when they disappear – without a word – for years and then reappear with the assumption that they can pick up right where they left off (this is the reason why I hate A Thousand Kisses and why I had some serious issues with the middle part of Witch's Romance). There is no justification for vanishing into thin air, it's something no sob-story or "I meant it well, it was to protect you" noble idiocy can justify. The fact that the male lead let himself be guilted back into a relationship didn't help, and when they did finally break it off, that he accompanied her back to the States and stayed there for a longer time... no, no, no!

Sorry, I don't mean to offend anyone, but basically the drama just had all the tropes I hate the most and featured them too prominently.

You're not alone in your thoughts on Sam Soon. I respect that it changed the rom com landscape in a big way when it came out - but most of the characters were insufferable, particularly both the male leads (I think Hyun Bin is really talented in general, but it's one of his worst roles). And I thought the love quadrangle was really frustrating too. It was weirdly addictive though, even if I didn't really like it much...

However, I do love WUF, and Me Too Flower was very interesting but flawed. I don't think WUF is actually that popular - while I think it's one of the best noona romances, alot of people who love noona romances haven't actually watched it (seemingly). Idk.

Alone In Love is a masterpiece imo, I would totally urge you to give it a second try. But maybe it's just not your thing. But the directing was good, so I expect good things from Valid Love.

WUF > Samsoon > Flower. Couldn't finish the last one because of the crazy unbelievable drama involving that second female lead. Started out really strong though.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's true, WUF is probably not that popular but those that like it all really like it and recommend it as the drama that too many people didn't watch. My issue with it wasn't the noona part, it was the way their relationship started off with one of them drunk and the other deciding they'd have sex regardless because he had feelings for her.

I started Alone in Love because a lot of people praise it for its realism, but I just found the premise too strange (them meeting to celebrate anniversaries despite being divorced and obviously not over each other when they just needed to LET GO and MOVE ON). Their dialogues just didn't make sense to me. I'm pretty sure I tried for 6 or 7 episodes.

I can only conclude that the writer and I have different tastes/beliefs/(?), I can't relate to his/her (?) characters and the things I'm supposed to find funny or romantic, I just don't.

Required fields are marked *

You are not alone my friend...I thought Samsoon was just okay...nothing like the exceptional praise it recived...for me the problem was the lead girl...she was too loud and obnoxious for my taste...and the other characters were not too interesting either...it's not a drama I would watch again..

I'm probably going against the grain when I say this, but I don't find him attractive at all. And seeing him in real life last year reinforced my opinion, rather than dilute it. Though I must say, he can whip up a mean catwalk... at least in the videos I have seen.

I haven't seen him in much though, only White Christmas and portions of that vampire sitcom. I don't think it would be fair for me to grade him based on those projects since he was a rookie then, but what I gleamed... I don't think he had as much screen presence as the rest of the cast? Like he fades into the background or something.

I'm pretty sure quite a few people don't find him attractive. He's not classically / mainstream or cookie-cutter beautiful, but has a very distinct face with strong features and a unique kind of aura.

I think he's gorgeous, but I do photography (not professionally) and that's the kind of guy (or in female equivalent) I'd love to take pictures of. It's the kind of person you'd spot in the middle of the busiest street because they've got such fascinating facial features.

Haha, I do photography too actually (semi-professionally for awhile, casually now). I guess he's good for street fashion shoots, or portrait sketches? I actually think he looks better / more unique in photos than in real life? I was actually quite taken aback by how ordinary he looks (comparatively) because while I don't find him attractive, I certainly agree that he's at the very least unique looking. Just my opinion though.

I really need to check out that drama with SIG.

Lee Min Hoo is one that I just don't see the attractiveness of but he seems to top a lot of people's lists.

Tastes, tastes!

1

That's two similarities we share (well, three actually if you count photography) :D

I think it has quite a fair bit to do with stage presence and charisma, of which I feel Woobie has in spades. And image of course.

And I also only caught him in White Christmas and portions of that vampire sitcom (Does less than two eps of Heirs count?). Oh yes, and an episode or two of that Style Icon series.

1

Well I like that one too!

#firstworldproblem

0

I don't find LJS attractive either and initially I didn't think Woobie was all that too. But then I watched Heirs, and while I hated his character at first I eventually warmed up to him because he had such charisma and screen presence. He became my third favourite thing about that show. I totally think there's a resemblance between him and Hong Jong-hyun, Perhaps the eyebrows? If Woobie, Ricecake and Jong-hyun were ever in the same drama together, I don't know what I'd do with myself.

I like him a lot. I look forward to his growth more than the other actor/models, actually. And I think his resume up until now has been pretty varied compared to them as well--assassin, vampire/alien, cop, business man, troubled teen, prodigal pianist--practically every leading man role except not as a leading man, lol. He does get better with each role and I was so impressed with him in Savvy. My ideal role for him would be something that breaks his image of cool, distant, and aloof but I can wait for that.

This role sounds like a nice next step for him (serious second lead territory--he wasn't much competition in Savvy haha) and the drama doesn't sound so bad either. I'd give it a go with this casting.

I get what you mean... but what I don't get is why the "heroes" are often shown cheating... I mean in crime things and stuff, even if you follow the murderer, you know it's the bad guy.

It's not the same when it comes to cheating. Sometimes it is presented as bad, but there are many shows where it's supposed to be funny or normal, and it's the "good guys" who do it.

To me watching shows about cheating, if it's not about cheating being bad, is just like being a roman watching gladiators killing each others in the arena. It feels the same to me: it's disgusting to be entertained by something that is the breaking of trust and of lives.

It's only my opinion though, please don't feel outraged if you do like those. We all have stuff we like that others don't. I'm not judging anybody here, it's just something I really don't like. I do know I'm biased and kind of a hypocrite because I enjoy other shows where people kill each others (like I dunno, sageuks for example, with all the heroes slaying the bad guys with sharp swords)... ;)

My two cents:
Personally, he needs to (or rather I need to see him) play out of type BEFORE he gets cast as a leading man. Not that I've disliked him before or his characters, but I'd feel whether or not he's earned it more. There are others I'd rather see as leads more than he. As to his appearance, (though I know nothing of carpentry) I always pictured carpenters as brawny(-er than he) considering all the labor required but at least it's a little different. Though I'm not sure it even matters since dramaland is famous for having characters with jobs they never actually do. Now to his casting in general I don't mind either way, Uhmforce is good people to work with as far as skills. Premise wise, yawn (and maybe eww) but it might play out well. I'll suspend judgement 'till the teasers. Hate not to watch Uhmmy bear but...

I haven't watched him in anything else, but I've grown to adore him from Savvy. However for his own personal growth, I really don't want him to do this role. The plot seems meh, and he'll just be playing the same role but different job as everyone said. I most likely won't watch this, as all I can imagine is his Savvy character but in a carpenter uniform haha

I'd hate to see him typecasted into these roles in rom coms. I feel like his next work should be something action related, maybe a bit like his character in Shark, but more leading?

Lee Soo Hyuk has quickly become one of my favourite actors. I first discovered him on tumblr, and I was absolutely blown away by his unique, and strong features. Truly a sight! Such a gorgeous human being.

But his acting is tremendous. I don't really know why people can't see it. His subtlty is absolutely stunning. Remember the scene where the lead girl was watching him in the movie theatre, and he was sitting alone clearly in pain, and crying to himself. Nothing has broken my heart so instantly like that scene! I was like, damn this drama is good, and I realized it was because of Lee Soo Hyuk. I found myself waiting for him to be on screen, not for his looks, but because of the depth he brought to the light hearted drama.

Ugh, and don't get me started on that scene in the car, where he was watching her sleep, and struggling with his own desires. So realistic, and subtle. Not overacted in any way. Perfection.

I'm excited for this! I know he will get the lead one day (who knows, maybe he will be the lead in this drama!), but until then, I'll take what I can get. Fighting, LSH.

As for Tree With Deep Roots, it's supposed to be a great drama, but I didn't finish watching it yet because it is so sad, however he's great in it! But it's me, I just have a thing for sageuk/fusion sageuk costumes. I find the actors so much more beautiful in historic costumes. You can try it out if you like fusion sageuk. I won't spoil you as for what character he plays in it, but I loved him, he had so much class! And his voice is like, part of his character, as the main male lead even comments on it. :)

I also like his subtlety. All the little smiles and expressions (and he has a lot when he gets to show them) seem natural and so does he.

Definitely! I found the less and less scenes he had near the end, the less I was interested in the drama. And I love Seo In Guk!

Yes, he can totally do aegyo as well!

He did very well in the cutesy department in High School King - like the bickering bromance with SIG, and that dinner date with Soo-young when he teased her a bit.

I like his subtly as well :) I've always thought he was very good at that whole "emoting with just your eyes" thing. I would like to see him push himself a bit more though; I'm not exactly sure how to explain it. I think he's quite good, but I think he can (and will) improve.

This was my first time watching him too and I was also very impressed by his subtlety. I thought many times what a big difference from some well established actors that always either overact or show us a blank face. This guy. Someone. Get him a lead role, asap! :)

I know. Some of the biggest actors out there, when they are supposed to be hurting, they give this blank empty stare.

Lee Soo Hyuk, you can feel his whole body emoting.

I think he's a great actor too.

Spot on Ace, and I'm just as surprised that people can't see it. I like him for his subtle acting and expressions. There are so many actors with loud and over the top acting chops that works too but can be overbearing sometimes.

So I appreciate his smoothness and subtlety as he emotes more with his eyes instead of over using his body with acrobatic expressions and movements to get the message across.

As for Valid Love, I'm not too keen in him being the second lead because I'm sure I'll want to root for him as I'm not into Uhm Tae Woong if he takes on the offer. But then I'll be in a dilemma because I'm not to infidelity and he's the third wheel. To top it off, I like the leading lady, Han Ji Min. So better he doesn't sign on for my heart's sake. :)

Anyway, seriously, after his performance in Savvy he should be offered leading roles now.

I didn't see high school king...and I'm not sure this one seems up my alley. Can someone recommend something else he's been in? I want to see what all the fuss is about!

Give 'White Christmas' a try. :)

Why are you people saying he is playing a similar role again? From the story description, it's obvious the gal will reciprocate his feelings, and there's a high chance he will go seduce the gal. Definitely different from savvy.

I have been following Soo Hyuk's drama resume, and I really don't mind him still at 2nd lead phase, because he's really not there yet, so if the 2 leads are confirmed, he can surely learn a thing or two from them before he leads his own.

I'm in a limbo where I'm not sure if he's not getting leads because he's still green, or if his acting seems green because he always gets the same damn roles. Requirements:
1. Cold (physically and/ or emotionally)
2. Occupational suits (points for office struts)
3. Magical creature, figurative or literal. To hell with subtlety!
3a. Vampire?
3b. Angel?
3c. Chaebol fairy?
4. Incredible childhood trauma (though that seems to be a prereq for every 2nd lead ever nowadays. Why can't a well-adjusted guy be in a drama? Ughhhh)

I would LOVE to see him in a rom com as the lead. I think he would be hilarious in his deadpan serious way, kind of like Anthony in King of Dramas. And those would fit his other roll requirements of coldness, suits, magical creature (Anthony was totally the devil lol)... Maybe not an incredible trauma.

DAMMIT SOO HYUK DO MORE THINGS TO SHOW YOUR RANGE
or get a range. Not sure at this point.

I think that he is a very good actor. His character in high school king of savvy had so many layers and he brought them out perfectly.

My heart skipped a beat or two looking at his photo. Yes please. Gimme some of that. He is not bad an actor at all. I was consumed in his character in Savvy.

Say "no" Soo Hyuk. Tell them you're busy with *insert city name here* Fashion Week.
It's another "broken/scarred/damaged/hiding a painful past" second lead and you did it in HSKoS already. It would be fun to see you as the main guy. It's high time to get the girl! :)

I just want to see him and hear him, that's all. That face, that voice, his abs and that butt. Now I can't breathe, he's so perfect and beautiful and I'm so shallow and superficial.

I am Shallow and Superficial as well. I do not mind him being second lead because there is something very delicious about great second leads.

Signing me up to the shallow and superficial club! We've seen SH's abs in HSK, so I can see him playing a carpenter, no problem!

haha, "Among other things…" indeed!

I just wanted SIG to pinch his cheeks upwards so that poor lonely puppy smiled more.
(Okay, just re-read that and realise it could be misinterpreted ... just clarifying that I'm NOT talking about apples here. Keeping it G-rated.)
