Lee Shi-young and Uhm Tae-woong get hitched for Valid Love
by girlfriday
Confirmations are in for the cast of tvN’s fall Monday-Tuesday drama Valid Love, with Uhm Tae-woong (Could We Love) playing the leading man as expected, while the heroine will be played by Lee Shi-young (Golden Cross), rather than Han Ji-min, who was courted earlier. Now that it’s going to be Lee Shi-young and Uhm Tae-woong, I want it to be really quirky, like High School King of Savvy quirky.
The new romantic comedy comes from writer Kim Do-woo (My Name Is Kim Sam-soon, What’s Up Fox, Me Too Flower!) and PD Han Ji-seung (Alone in Love), and stars Uhm Tae-woong as a marine researcher who once taught biology temporarily at a girls’ high school, and met his future wife Lee Shi-young there when she was a student. They get married and have a very ordinary happy marriage like anyone else, but one day the husband finds out that his wife is cheating on him, and gets furious for the first time in his life and explodes (hopefully figuratively — these days, it’s hard to tell).
Lee Shi-young plays the wife who’s caught between her husband who should be her “last love,” and Lee Soo-hyuk (High School King of Savvy), a carpenter who makes her feel as if she’s experiencing a “first love.” The drama will play with this last love/first love dynamic and the heroine’s mixed-up timing, in meeting the two men in reverse order, so to speak. I dunno, we’ll have to see if it’s a sympathetic conflict, or if it’s just a lot of fancy talk to justify cheating.
Choi Yeo-jin (Emergency Couple) also joins the cast as Uhm Tae-woong’s little sister, a chic woman who never hesitates to speak her mind. She tends to play characters I love — the brassy, sassy best friend — so I’m looking forward to her dynamic with her oppa. Maybe she’ll be the voice of reason in all this?
On paper the basic setup sounds more like a melo than a rom-com, but the hero’s trajectory sounds really funny: Once he calms down after the initial shock, he decides he can’t just sit back and lose his wife, so he sets out to prove that her new love is invalid (the heroine’s name is Illy, which means “valid”). It’s definitely weird but he’s a scientist, so I get the impulse to back up his hypothesis with evidence. Please make Uhmforce a super-nerd, pretty please!
The 20-episode drama has been pushed a few months back and will now follow Liar Game (which follows My Secret Hotel) in November.

I love the cast, I wish they were in a different drama. I am just really not into dramas about cheating. Sometimes the descriptions of a drama before it comes out and what you actually see on the screen are really different and I'm kind of hoping that's the case with this one.

Hope so. Cause there has been too many dramas lately, justifying cheating/adultery. Temptation even gave the cheaters, a fairytale, happy ending.

In a community that's overwhelmingly pro-TVN, it's a breath of fresh air for someone to finally admit this. I always find TVN dramas terribly overproduced, even if I did like "Answer Me 1994."

I am a solid fan of most TVN dramas and I don't mind. TVN produces better dramas than those of the big 3.

Yeah, that guy in the bow tie looks JUST like a manly, macho carpenter who might bring romance to some lonely housewife. Must be a heck of a good actor.

Lol, ya'll know carpenter's don't just look one way, right? Han Yeo Reum from Discovery of Romance could be called a carpenter, too, for example.

Aww this cast is perfect, though I was looking forward to seeing Ha Ji-min in a drama again.
My only concern now is the premise, please don't suck...

yay for Lee Shi Young back on screen! :D though I'm little uncomfortable with the cheating theme, but I doubt the drama will take it far anyway. I think this will be sth like Alone in Love where the married couple is having the crisis of their marriage to eventually resolve it in the end. Too bad, cause I want Lee Soo Hyuk in a lead role; his acting may not be top notch yet but he's getting better. no really, the storyline doesn't sound new and recycled Idk how many timee already, can't there be a twist for once..

Yes to Uhmforce and Lee Shi Young but ugh to another infidelity driven drama. And let's hope Lee Soo Hyuk makes it a worthy conflict and hangs with the rest of the cast when it comes to acting.

I mean, um. It's interesting, I guess? At least, I'm curious to see if they can sell it. I love the cast. Definitely will be interested in seeing what tvn will come up with for the teasers for this. I'm just really not sure what to expect from this drama...

Okay, I have issues with dramas that focus on cheating wives or husbands. So, despite how much I love Uhmforce, I won't watch this. TvN usually has good dramas, but lately they've been hit or miss with me. This is a miss.

Yes to this cast...mostly. Still don't see how on earth he will convincingly be a carpenter. I adore Choi Yeo-jin so that's a big incentive. Hope there is no romantic development before she's legal. Also big question mark on the cheating thing. Not too much that its about that, since come on, most of us probably don't agree with murder but will watch crime shows/violent thrillers. etc. (and I mean the one with the shady morals, not catching the bad guys). The thing is since its K-dramaland...they'll probably sanitize it. Make it cutesy and what not; I'd rather they do the dirty and deal with the fall out than spend time obscuring the definition of cheating.
On anther note, BIG YES to UHMFORCE THE SUPER-NERD!

I am kinda excited to see him as a carpenter. Put him in a singlet, scruffy jeans, work boots and a tool belt. Yes please. Add a bit of sweat and dirt and I'm keen. Tradesmen can be preeety attractive, and I think he can pull it off.

I'll agree that I'm curious and I'm not saying it's impossible. Someone above mentioned his abs/biceps. He's sculpted for sure but he is still...well...skinny and he has a delicate ethereal, more inhuman look that clashes with MY PERSONAL picture of a (sexy) carpenter: earthy, brawny, exuding warmth and...tan. Fine I said it. But he'd look weird with a tan so I have to either sacrifice my image or if he resembles it not look like himself which would be weirder. Personal crisis=Rock and hard place... Meh I'm here for Uhmmy Bear and now Choi Yeo-jin. Wait... Thwy won't end up with each other right?! Wouldn't it be odd to date your sister-in-law's ex-boytoy?!

I'm also a big fan of Choi Yeo-jin and still want someone to write a full drama just about her bad-ass, whip-smart doctor character in Emergency Couple ... a drama where she gets a guy who isn't such a sad sack. I fast forwarded through just about every scene in EC that she wasn't in.
Even so, the description of this new drama isn't doing it for me and I'll probably give it a miss.

" a drama where she gets a guy who isn’t such a sad sack." HAHA he was and while I preferred him to the lead I wasn't really rooting for them. And yes, she has earned a lead role a hundred times over by now.

Okay, I'm in it for the cast. It's all in the execution, really. Lee Shi Young has a tendency to pick quirky characters and I'm kind of getting a Naked Kitchen/All About My Wife vibe from this so far, although Kitchen was a little more melo so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt before I write it off. Cheating is never a good thing but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be examined in media.

For 2014, I'm 4/4 with the main cast...I watched Uhm Tae-woong in Could We Love, Choi Yeo-jin in Emergency Couple, Lee Shi-young in Golden Cross, and Lee Soo-hyuk in High School, King of Savvy.
I've seen My Name Is Kim Sam-soon and I'm glad that it's one less drama on my must-see list. Most likely in the minority, but I didn't really care for MNIKSS. I have yet to see What's Up Fox. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the very underrated Me Too, Flower with Yoon Si-Yoon and Lee Ji-Ah.
Countdown...less than 4 months left in the year. I'm not really in the mood to be suckered into watching another kdrama about adultery with a fairly decent cast. I have had my fill of what seems to be a kdrama trend this year.

Not completely in the minority: MNIKSS was one of my first (perhaps my fourth? Maybe my fifth) Kdrama and it...didn't really do it for me. I didn't like the guy, I was still getting used to the tropes (sick ex-girlfriend that you HAVE to stay with? Even if you don't love her?), and I really REALLY wasn't a fan of the male lead. But it was an okay drama, it certainly didn't stop my Kdrama obsession in its tracks.
...Goong S did that a few months later and it took me a long time to come back from that.
Oh, and I totally agree about Me Too, Flower! Lord, I loved that drama and became a serious fan of Yoon Si-yoon with that drama. He really sold his character, just (as I have discovered since he went on my "Must Watch" List) as he always does. :)

LEE SI YOUNG!!!!!!! I loved her and missed her and was kind of sad with her character's plight in Golden Cross. So, I hope the drama is quirky and fun.
Can't say I mind cheating in dramas or at least it doesn't turn me away from a show completely so I am still interested in watching. Plus, it's tVN, it'll most likely be a good time. It's not a nice thing, cheating, but it is something that happens in real life so I don't mind watching it play out on screen and how different stories kind of examine that/use it as a device. Though, I'm wondering if she just crushes on Carpenter Soo Hyuk (you can feel love in this way, too) or actually gets in a relationship with him. Either way! Will watch for sure.

Don't know how I feel about the premise, but I am all for the two leads!!! Two of my favs as the OTP? Wahoo! As for the second male lead, eh, I mostly prefer rugged guys (except for SSH, but who DOES NOT love him?) and this young'n looks a little too pretty boy for me. I know, I know, he's well built, blah, blah, blah. I guess I will have to be patient... Bah.

Shamelessly declaring that I'm only going to be watching this for Lee Soo Hyuk. The moment he comes on screen, my brain shuts down because he is so amazingly perfect and beautiful. His voice and pretty butt add to his charm.I would violently squish him.

I like Lee Shi young but in all her dramas (poseidon, wild romance and golden cross) she always played the spunky and feisty character up until the 8th ep then she became weak and moppy character..which dissapoints me..but UTW is one of my fav actor..hope they will be able to make things happen for this drama

I just realized that I have only ever finished one Uhm-force drama, Dr. Champ. Wait! And that really slow one where they just stared at each other a a lot, no, not the Sword and Flower one where nobody ever moved, the other one where he was blind.
WHATISTHENAMEOFTHATSHOW? He gets hit on the head and his "friend" tries to kill him and the other guy killed his father and the crazy girl with the shaman dad loves him but he loves Ji Sung's wife (IRL) and they kissed once. And there are paintings. He tortures his "friend" who was a Prosecutor Hunter, too, for a while and then realizes the bad guy is actually his father...or something...I refuse to look it up on wiki. I will think of it. The cute kid from Iljimae and To the Beautiful You played him as a yoot.
This is going to drive me batty.
