Kim Myung-min cast as president in disaster film

Normally I find presidents to be the least interesting characters in disaster movies — the scientists usually do the heavy lifting, while politicians panic and then give speeches — but it’s a totally different story if you cast Kim Myung-min (A New Leaf, King of Dramas) in the role. I can see him being a young, charismatic president who leads a country through a crisis. Then again, he’s Kim Myung-min, so I’ll just be buying whatever he’s selling.

The new movie is called Pandora, and comes from writer-director Park Jung-woo. Kim Myung-min starred in his 2012 disaster movie Deranged, about a creepy contagion that made people drown themselves in water, leading to a Han River full of corpses. Kim Myung-min has reportedly agreed to the disaster-film reunion, and is working out contract details.

The new movie centers around a nuclear power plant that puts the entire country at risk when something happens to endanger it. We’re not told what, but I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the danger has “nuclear reactor” and “meltdown” in the description. Much like Deranged, the director plans to tell the story through various characters dealing with the crisis in their own ways, this time all the way from the president to the workers at the plant.

Kim Myung-min is currently shooting his Detective K sequel, and Pandora plans to finish casting and enter production by the end of the year, for a release in 2015.

" buying whatever he’s selling." Lol, I agree but I'd so love to see him in something less traffic for a change. Less tragic but a regular person (not detective k). :)

I love disaster movies, but Korean disaster movies are very much like those super low budget, zero science movies made for the SyFy channel.

With some nuclear reactor causing people to drown themselves, this sounds almost as plausible as Sharknado...

I vote for this President. Rule us, sir. At least on-screen.

I approve of this president too. A new leaf was a bit disappointing for me but KMM still delivered his best under the circumstances.

I can totally see him as the charismatic "Rudy Giuliani" in the time of crisis.

Somewhat of a tangent, but as someone who lived in Manhattan during the Giuliani years, this comment made me chuckle. A lot of people outside NY may not have realized (or they forgot) how absolutely *hated* Giuliani was by so many. He was strong and tough and very confident, but charismatic? Not so much. He definitely cleaned up and improved the city, but so many, especially liberal-leaning people, were vocal critics of everything he did. Even banning smoking from bars turned him into public enemy no. 1. But then . . . 9/11 happened, and I don't think anybody could have done a better job in leading the city's recovery than he did, and it really rehabbed his image in many ways.

So, to bring it back to this movie, what a president/leader does in a time of crisis really is a defining moment in his legacy and how he'll be remembered. Interesting to see how they'll explore that in "Pandora."

President Anthony for the win!

However, I do agree with others that it would be nice to see him in something lighter. I'd love to see him in a rom-com. He had some very good dry, comic moments in "The King of Dramas" before it went full-on melo, and it would be an interesting contrast to see him do an entire movie in that vein.

I suggest 'Bad Family'. Lovely series and while not romance-heavy, it did have it and it was quite cute. And Kim played a character very different to the cultured and refined folks we're used to. A low-life gangster with anger issues and a hidden softie of a personality.

But I like his darker roles too. Since he works in dramas, I guess he wants meatier stuff for cinema. Although he seems to be enjoying Detective K too.

Second, Kim Myung Min in Bad Family. It's not quite a rom-com, but there's some romance and some comedy.

It also has Nam Sang Mi of Joseon Gunman as the female lead.

It's really about the Bad Family becoming a good family, though :).

So...like Roland Emmerich's disaster movies, but hopefully without the destruction porn? I could get behind that.

Most low budget disaster movies go overboard on the really badly done CGI stuff, and Korean ones are no exception. Not holding my breath for this one.

Sounds good to me. The acting will make or break it I bet.

I find it ironic that S Korea's doing this movie, instead of Japan, but I'm definitely stoked to see Kim Myung Min again!!

I wish sometimes that filmmakers would do something focusing on the aftermath of the nuclear disaster and what it means for the generations affected afterwards. Even apart from the lives lost, hundreds of thousands of people are currently displaced from their homes, communities and livelihoods, and large areas of contamination won't be liveable for decades.

That said, it doesn't stop me from watching disaster movies - enjoyed Deranged, but just hoping it's better than Haeundae (Tidal Wave)!

I thought of Japan as well.

Perhaps it's a reasonable fear, and the Fukushima meltdown probably resonated with Koreans who've grown up importing Japanese cultural goods about a post-apocalyptic world.

Me reading the title:
"Kim Myung-min cast as president in" OOOoooh^^
"disaster film" oh no

There are good disaster movies like The Tower etc but there are more of the "nothing special" disaster movies which I would say Deranged goes under.

I can totally see Kim Myung-min being all presidential.

On a side note, with that voice, the speeches would certainly not be boring. Heh.

Ever since I saw King of Dramas, I've been a fan of Kim Myung-min. I've only seen him in very few things since then, but I love the guy. But, I'm not really into disaster films. The last I saw was The Tower, but I liked it. Might see this.

Can anyone tell me if "Detective K" is any good? They're filming a sequel now so I guess it's good, yeah?

And any more of Kim Myung Min's work you guys would recommend? Thanks. I love him in Deranged and King of Dramas.
