Discovery of Romance: Episode 10
by dramallama
We’re past the halfway point of the show, and I’m glad to say we’ve overcome the midway hump. Moving forward full speed ahead. Though we get less plot, we’re given loads of emotional development, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. The small hints given throughout the episodes have accumulated to give us some rich emotional yet realistic reactions from our past lovers, who have yet to come to peaceful terms with each other. Long-awaited truths are revealed, but it may be too late to reverse the damage that’s been done.
EPISODE 10: “Let’s break up…”
We start off with Ha-jin perfectly timing his arrival to witness Tae-ha supporting Yeo-reum. He looks intently at the two as he thinks back to earlier in the day.
In a flashback, Ah-rim asks him what he thinks love is, and he replies that love is when you like the person even if you’re disadvantaged. “It’s when you know you’re being fooled, but just go along with it.” We see now that he’d seen Tae-ha and Yeo-reum together in the parking garage of the shopping mall, but he didn’t do anything about it.
Back to the present, Sol and Joon-ho rush out and do a double-gasp, first seeing debilitated Yeo-reum with Tae-ha, and then seeing Ha-jin. As soon as Ha-jin is in close enough proximity, Yeo-reum pushes away from Tae-ha and leans into his embrace. They all give Tae-ha accusing looks, so he explains that she had lost consciousness. But he doesn’t explain further, keeping her privacy.
Ha-jin gives him a curt thank-you, and they all carefully walk in, with the exception of Tae-ha and Sol. She presses him for more information on why Yeo-reum fainted, but he just says to let her rest and eat. Before going back inside, she warns him not to associate with Yeo-reum in the future, as it adds to the suspicion and stresses her out.
Joon-ho and Ha-jin try to get Yeo-reum some necessary medical attention, but she declines it, saying that she just wants to shower and rest. Being the considerate boyfriend, Ha-jin dries her hair, feeds her, and brushes his teeth with her. It’s really sweet.
Meanwhile, Tae-ha paces outside, unable to communicate his worry to anyone. He tries to text Sol but can’t manage to ask her about Yeo-reum. Sitting in his car, he starts his engine but waits. He’s clearly frustrated, stuck doing nothing. He eventually leaves, but he broods on his stairs at home. “I wish I could just hear that she’s okay.”
Ha-jin has fallen asleep next to Yeo-reum, but she hasn’t. She stares at her ring and thinks back to earlier. She had felt Tae-ha’s tears fall onto her hand. Not only that, she’d woken up and seen him bawling. Confused and unable to sleep, she gets up and gives him a call.
Tae-ha looks depressed as he drinks the night away and braces himself before he picks up the call. He asks if she’s okay, but she replies with a question, asking if something happened while she was at the hospital. Behind her, Ha-jin walks in just in time to overhear the conversation and interrupts the phone call just as she starts to thank him.
Ha-jin takes the phone and thanks Tae-ha on behalf of Yeo-reum, which of course doesn’t sit well with Tae-ha. He demands to hear those words directly from Yeo-reum, but Ha-jin ends the phone call after his quick word of thanks. He tells Yeo-reum that it shouldn’t matter who expresses the gratitude as long as it’s shown. He adds that they’ve got a lot to talk about but not tonight. She needs rest.
Angry and frustrated, Tae-ha goes to the batting cage with Yoon. He inserts coin after coin into the machine and bats away, ready to push himself to exhaustion. Yoon insists that he stop, as he could injure his shoulder, but he doesn’t listen. He’s got too many feelings brewing up inside of him.
They end up sitting against the wall on an empty street with some beer. Yoon massages Tae-ha’s arm and asks what’s going on. Tae-ha asks what kind of person he is, and remembers what Yeo-reum said about him. She told him that he always made her wait and had more important things to do, even though he insisted that he liked her. He acknowledges, “I’m a selfish person, I do what I want, and I don’t think of others. I’m that bastard.”
He explains that when he saw Yeo-reum in the hospital, he regretted everything. He even says that Ha-jin is probably a better guy for her. He even considered resolving his feelings and wishing for her own happiness. But he can’t do that. He can’t wish her happiness with another man. He gets up and explosively tells Yoon that he’s a deplorable guy but can’t help himself when it comes to Yeo-reum.
The next morning, Yoon comes to Tae-ha’s house with a hangover breakfast and finds him asleep against the couch. As soon as he wakes up, he confirms that they’re going to Yeo-reum and Sol’s shop. He insists on going along because he has something to tell Sol.
Ha-jin accidentally wakes up Yeo-reum with a morning kiss, and he tells her to rest as he prepares breakfast. Lying in bed, she thinks back to Ha-jin’s lie about the seminar yesterday. She gets up, finds his car keys, and sneaks out to do some snooping. In the car, she looks through his receipts and GPS to trace where he went yesterday. She sees that he went to an orphanage, which completely throws her off.
Sol and Joon-ho see Yeo-reum snooping around in the car, so they join her to ask what she’s up to. She admits that she’s looking for evidence to use against Ha-jin, but what she found so far is confusing. They see that he went to the orphanage, but Sol tells her that if a man were to cheat, he would go anywhere to do so. Joon-ho tries to escape the situation, but Yeo-reum locks the doors and Sol grabs him. Ha.
Back inside, they all sit down for breakfast, and Yeo-reum cuts to the chase. She asks why Ha-jin lied to her, so he asks why she didn’t tell him she was out with Tae-ha. Joon-ho and Sol follow the conversation and interrupt to defend their respective friends. Sol tells the couple to stop misunderstanding each other, and if they’re going to lie to each other, don’t get caught.
Ha-jin takes note of how Yeo-reum used banmal with Tae-ha on the phone yesterday, as did Joon-ho and Sol when talking to him last night. They quickly cover up the situation, explaining that they just got close from their frequent interactions, but he’s suspicious. Oohh, if you all are going to lie, don’t get caught.
Yeo-reum changes the topic back to Ah-rim, asking how Ha-jin could meet up with her again so soon after their big fight. He explains to her that he went to drive up one of the children who needs surgery. Since these children don’t have parents to support them, he wanted to be of greater help. Of course, this hits a soft spot for him, but Yeo-reum is not as sympathetic and leaves the table, angry that he always makes her the bad person.
Producer Bae has an afternoon date with Ha-jin’s mother at the regular bar that the whole crew — Yeo-reum, Joon-ho, Sol — frequents. He gets a call from Mom asking where he is, and she hangs up saying that she’ll meet him there, not giving him a chance to explain his situation. He mentally prepares for a big fight between these women over him and tells the bar owner to be ready. Little does he know, he’s introducing the two in-laws without their knowledge. Haha.
The meeting of the two women is not as explosive as Producer Bae had expected — their conversation actually turns into a compliment-fest for him. It seems like they’re both trying to set each other up with him. Ha-jin’s mother pops the question about the two being friends for a long time; now all they need to do is combine their living situations.
That catches Mom off-guard. After some clarification, it turns out neither of the two women are interested in Producer Bae, which is news to nobody but him. Sorry to crush your dreams, my friend.
Ha-jin comes into Yeo-reum’s room with her uneaten food. He insists that she eat and starts to explain his nightmares. But he can’t fully disclose his backstory because of his mother. “Without my mother, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t be a doctor, and I probably would have never met you.” He promises to tell her as soon as he can with his mother’s permission.
Ha-jin accidentally knocks over the juice on the white comforter, cueing laundry time for the couple. Joon-ho and Sol watch from afar and comment on how they were just mad at each other moments ago — they’ll probably never break up. And because laundry time is always a good time, they also join in on the fun.
Meanwhile, Ah-rim is preparing lunch and the little boy, Tae-kyung, waits for Ha-jin to join them. He’s disappointed when Ah-rim tells him that she’s not going to call, so he tries to call himself. She’s clearly trying to distance herself from him, but she does call him for Tae-kyung.
The happy lounging couple sees the call, and Ha-jin surrenders his phone to Yeo-reum. She picks up and tells Ah-rim that Ha-jin won’t be able to make lunch with them because he lied to her yesterday. It’s a pretty straightforward message and one that Ah-rim seems to have predicted, but they’re both disappointed by his absence.
Joon-ho watches Sol saw wood, with an enamored expression on his face and “My Girl” playing in the background. He stares intently as Sol turns around, smiling. The real Sol calls out to Joon-ho, which wakes him up from his reverie. She asks him to get some coffee, and he happily agrees.
As he walks outside, he runs into Tae-ha and Director Yoon. Tae-ha requests to talk to him as Director Yoon rushes inside to “work” with Sol, making Joon-ho wary.
Joon-ho asks if anything is wrong with Yeo-reum, but Tae-ha clarifies that it was a momentary wave of stress that caused her to lose consciousness. He then asks about where Yeo-reum’s father is resting, which raises a red flag for Joon-ho. Yeo-reum’s mother goes there once a month, but Yeo-reum refuses to go. She’s particularly sensitive about her father, and they know not to bring it up. Still, Tae-ha wants to know where he is.
Back at the shop, Director Yoon presents Sol with a contract for a new project collaboration, but he’s more concerned with the pine tree he’s brought. He gives it to Sol and confesses his feelings just as Joon-ho arrives. He starts out by saying that he has a chest, to which Sol immediately covers her chest. He quickly corrects his mistake — he meant heart. HA. “I’m 37 and single. What people do these days with flirting and testing the waters, I think it’s a waste of time. I don’t have time for that. I’ve seen enough of you… and I was wondering what you thought of me.”
Smiling shyly, Sol begins to answer, but she’s cut off by Joon-ho. He announces his arrival with coffee and politely gives Director Yoon one. Director Yoon takes his leave, and Joon-ho smacks Sol on the forehead, telling her to get in her right mind.
Tae-ha finds where Yeo-reum’s father is resting and arrives with flowers. He spends some time at the tree paying his respects and lost in his own thoughts.
Yeo-reum and Sol discuss the new project collaboration with Tae-ha’s company. Joon-ho interrupts with his biased input, saying that he thinks they shouldn’t do this project. But the two want to go forward anyway and use the earnings from this job to expand their shop. Joon-ho then remembers that he told Tae-ha about Yeo-reum’s father’s resting place. She reacts angrily to this news and thinks back to Tae-ha’s behavior at the hospital.
Ha-jin gets quick updates from Ah-rim about Tae-kyung’s condition and then meets with his mother. He tells her that he wants to tell Yeo-reum about Ah-rim. “I received a lot from you, Mom. If I hadn’t met you, I would have lived like Ah-rim, and she would have lived like me. I’d like to give Ah-rim a tenth of what you’ve given me.” But when his mother asks if Yeo-reum wants to marry him, he has no response. She tells him to wait and think about whether or not they should reveal this to Yeo-reum.
At work, Tae-ha tells Director Yoon to alter the contract so that it excludes Yeo-reum and is only with Sol. Director Yoon seems doubtful, but Tae-ha looks sure. Later, in the break room, Yeo-reum runs into Tae-ha and confirms that he asked for her father’s resting place. She also requests that he not tell anyone that her fainting was because they’d visited the fishing site her father frequented.
But Tae-ha opposes that idea, “These people are the closest to you and should know about this. Why you hurt, have a hard time, and get those symptoms… ” But Yeo-reum cuts him off, “I don’t think people need to know everything about me, no matter what it is.”
She takes her leave, but Tae-ha gets the last word: “You need to give a chance to the people who love you. Think about what that means.”
As she leaves with Sol, Yeo-reum tells Director Yoon about how happy she is to be busy with work nowadays. But he finally breaks it to her that this contract is only for Sol, not both of them. Upon hearing this news, Yeo-reum immediately gives Tae-ha a call, but he doesn’t pick up. He just watches them walk away from afar.
Ha-jin performs surgery on little Tae-kyung’s burn scar, and though it’s successful, Tae-kyung keeps crying after the surgery. Ha-jin and Ah-rim try to figure out what’s wrong, and he finally admits that he misses his mom. Ha-jin is taken aback and looks at him sympathetically, but Ah-rim immediately begins to scold him.
She tells him that he can come live with her; all he needs to do is study hard and come to Seoul when he grows up. He swallows his tears, and so does Ha-jin, as he looks at Ah-rim apologetically. When he returns to his office, he thinks back to Tae-kyung crying for his mom and lets a tear drop before he wipes away his sadness.
Tae-ha looks through his memory box again, trying to relive some of his moments with Yeo-reum through some adorable pictures. He comes across a written contract and a handwritten letter, which stirs particular memories.
Flashback to the relationship days. Yeo-reum throws a notepad and pen at Tae-ha, who’s kneeling with his hands above his head in punishment for being two hours late. She forces him to write a contract, and though she’s mad, she smiles at the thought of this punishment. At another point in their relationship, Yeo-reum forcefully opens Tae-ha’s eyes to show him the handwritten letter, reminding him of their promise to write to each other.
Back in the present, Tae-ha looks through all the contents of the box — the pictures, the letters, the ring — and packs it back into the box in a concluding manner.
As Yeo-reum and Sol close up their shop, Tae-ha arrives. He sits down with Yeo-reum to explain why she’s not included in the future contract. He simply doesn’t want to see her anymore. Even this current project is being headed by Director Yoon now, so she won’t be seeing Tae-ha anymore. He gives her an envelope of pictures to look through as reference for the wine bar.
As she looks through them, she finds pictures of her father’s burial place. She’s immediately brought to tears by the photos and asks Tae-ha why he went there. He says that wanted to apologize to her father for not fulfilling his promise to be by her side. He also admits that he should have been by her side when her father passed. If he had been there, she probably would have told him the truth. “I’m sorry.”
In a quick flashback, we see Yeo-reum faced with telling Joon-ho and Sol about her father’s death. They hadn’t known about the funeral until it was too late. Mom also enters the room, and Joon-ho goes to express his sympathies. They ask how he passed, and Yeo-reum lies that it was a car accident. Mom looks at her, knowing it’s a lie, but doesn’t say anything.
In the present, Yeo-reum continues to cry as she lets out her thoughts. “I thought that you would find out eventually since we dated for so long. I don’t know why, but when I was at the hospital, I thought that maybe you had figured everything out. Because you’re Kang Tae-ha.”
The only thing Tae-ha can do is apologize for finding out too late. Yeo-reum breaks down in tears, so he comes over to comfort her. In a voiceover, she tells us, “This person’s warmth, tears, and sincerity reassured me. I felt like I’d gotten lost and only now found peace of mind — someone to tell me that it’s okay, that it’s not my fault. That’s how I felt.”
After letting out her tears, Yeo-reum tells Tae-ha everything about that day. It seemed like a normal morning: Her parents were aloof and she was nervous at their behavior. Tae-ha says that he thinks it was planned, as her father had told him at the fishing place to be good to Yeo-reum and think of her as his last love. Sadly, he couldn’t keep that promise.
Thinking back, Tae-ha reflects on their past problems and regrets that they could have overcome them. “Everything’s my fault. You were right, Han Yeo-reum.” She admits that she should have told him the truth but was too scared to speak of what really happened.
Throwing his pride away, Tae-ha tells Yeo-reum that he lost his chance, but she should give that chance to Ha-jin because he’s the one by her side now. He stands up to make his final statement. “Let’s break up. Now, let’s properly break up. I couldn’t break up with you because I didn’t know why we broke up in the first place. And you’ve been resenting me all this time. You’re not broken up if you’re still resenting that person. Be happy, Han Yeo-reum. I’m glad I can sincerely say this to you.”
He forces a smile and walks away. Yeo-reum’s tears start to fall again, and Tae-ha can’t hold back his tears either as he walks away from the actual end of their relationship.
COMMENTS
This was such a solid episode, and it was executed so well. If you’ve been drama-hopping and just happened to watch this episode, it may have been a bit overwhelming. But if you’ve been following the previous episodes, this was a much-awaited emotional catharsis from both sides, but especially Yeo-reum. There’s something about her breaking her cold front and allowing herself to break down that gave me a wave of relief. She deserved a good cry, and I’m glad she finally got a chance to do so.
It’s interesting to see how the change of tone and perspective can change our view of our characters. These past two episodes have been particularly sympathetic towards Yeo-reum, as all the missing pieces are slowly coming together. Until we figured out what exactly happened, she was misunderstood as an unreasonable person. I kept asking the question: Why couldn’t she just tell Tae-ha about what happened? But we see the reasons now. Speaking of and even just thinking about her father is too much for Yeo-reum. The memory of him haunts her to the bone, and it’s likely something she’ll never get over. It was great strategy for the writers to be stingy and reveal only little bits of information at a time. That way, we as the audience experienced the same misunderstandings and frustrations as the characters who had trouble understanding each other. Our understanding widens with the characters, and there’s not much more that we know that they don’t. Ironically, it’s that lack of dramatic irony that makes this show so intriguing.
While I think our couple is taking steps in the right direction, I’m honestly not a fan of them anymore. They’re cute, they’re sweet, and they’re beautiful. But they don’t have the depth that I see with Yeo-reum and Tae-ha. The chemistry between our exes is undeniable, so much so that even Ha-jin is catching on and bound to find out sometime soon. As most of their history is now fully disclosed to us and them, we see how tragic their relationship is. They were so close in mending the rips and tears, but they found themselves as victims of circumstance. Of course, they were at fault for not communicating and taking each other for granted, but some of the cracks in their relationship were out of their control. Nothing could have prepared them for difficulties they never got over until now.
The star of the episode was definitely Tae-ha. His raw moment of self-hatred was wonderfully done, as I definitely don’t hate him as much as he hates himself. He can’t want to get back with Yeo-reum because she’s someone he’s already hurt too much. But he desperately and earnestly wants to give it another shot. Also, Tae-ha’s advice about trusting others to understand your pain was profound. I totally understand Yeo-reum when she’s saying that people don’t need to know everything about you — hiding your vulnerabilities is an easy way to avoid getting hurt. But he has a point when he tells her to give these people a chance. They all care about her and need to be given a chance to understand. That’s some great advice. I worry a little bit about Tae-ha’s noble idiocy tendencies, but so far, it’s more about making amends than anything. He’s trying to make some proper amends in this dysfunctional relationship so that they can both move on. Problem is, I don’t see them moving anytime soon.
I must mention that the level of acting with this whole cast is phenomenal. I haven’t commented too much on this before because it was clear that everyone was pretty competent. But I can’t leave this out, especially on such an emotion-heavy episode. Eric and Jung Yumi have some crackling chemistry together, but they also express their flawed characters with depth so well individually. And some of the relative newbies surprise me from time to time: Sung Joon and Yoon Jin-yi are doing quite well. Especially with Yoon Jin-yi, who has such a raw delivery of her emotions. I have a strong memory of specific moments with her in this drama, and that says a lot when you’re not getting as much screen time.
Going forward, oh my goodness, Director Yoon’s confession was utter perfection, Joon-ho’s infatuation with Sol is slowly becoming my favorite thing in the whole world, and Producer Bae’s vain tendencies make me laugh out loud. Regarding our exes — amid the turbulence and official breakup — one thing’s for certain: This sure isn’t the end.

I really dislike Ah rim, she has this (pardon the word) bitchy side, it was shown last episode when she met Yeo reum in the mall and again in this episode, after the phone call and I just can't emotionally connect with her character.

Same, I just can't stand her, I definitely get that bitchy vibe from her. Especially the way she talks to Yeoreum. It seems unbelievably rude. Honestly, a part of me can't wait until she knows Ha jin's her brother, and she realizes she's been yelling at her brothers girlfrined, and has a crush on her brother. Then again since the aren't blood related, it probably won't be as satisfying as I want it to be. She's the only character I jsut can't stand though/

Ditto here too. I can't stand her. Her 'bright and perky' rubs me the wrong way completely. Then comes that b*tchy side that HJ is completely oblivious to. Arrgh.
NOT that I am a huge fan of YR that I am blinded biased ... but at least with this character what you see is what you more or less get.

Good to see this show getting back on track, things are clicking into place even if the Tae-ha/Yeo-reum parts are too raw to discuss.
So I'll just leave it to Sol: a man were to cheat, he would go anywhere to do so! (you forgot to mention the part where she said 'even in a lunchbox!', Kim Seul-gi gets some truly golden lines)

I know Tae-ha is the bad guy to many, but I really have problems with Yeo-Reum. She really has that princess syndrome! She expects everyone around her to just do her bidding, treat her like a precious flower and never contradict her at all. She expects those around her to act in a certain way, even when they don't have all the information (the way she didn't even tell her roommates about her father's suicide or Tae Ha). I know he's in the wrong for ignoring her, but in all the phone calls, not once could she say I have a family emergency (even if it's too painful to verbalize what happened?).
The way she treats Ha Jin is also unbearable to watch. She expects him to give in to her every single time, even when she is clearly wrong too. Even from the beginning, when he proposed to her. She should be able to reasonably tell him why she can't at the moment and about her debt. Not because she wants him to pay it but because it's what couples who are about to embark on a lifetime together do. They talk about even the unpleasant things. She hasn't even told him the biggest secret of all, who Tae-Ha really is! Yet she has the nerve to throw shade.
Anyway, I'm here for Sol + Joon Ho...SHIP!!!!!!!!

^This.
I feel like this drama is I Need Romance 2 Version 2.0 with sucky characters and a frustrating storyline.
I love watching the Sol + JoonHo interaction but it's not enough for me to keep up with this show anymore. So disappointed in this drama reunion with JYM and Eric.

Hmm. I'm usually the first to criticize an acting job, especially if it is by someone who happens to do a little singing and dancing on the side, but in this case I have to disagree. I think Eric did a fabulous job in these past two episodes. I found myself totally believing his cathartic realization of YR's past pain and their missed opportunities. I totally got his sense of remorse, his frustration with their situation, his lingering feelings of love, and his acknowledgement of the hopelessness of their relationship.

she didn't like the the particular style of this drama, doesn't mean Eric's problem. You probably fast forward to miss out on the good. Too bad for you. Can leave it to the rest of us.

Nah. Eric's acting/character isn't the problem for me. He's actually great. I just feel duped because I really wanted this to actually be about him having a chance with his ex and it seems more about him making amends and learning from his mistakes, which is fine, but misleading. This drama is good overall, but it's not really what I was hoping for. So, I think if you get into it without any expectations, you'll really enjoy it.
P.S. Sol is the business!

This show gives us (at least) 4 persons to side with.
About YR: In the early days she was totally waiting on TH; Now she is quite demanding w HJ. It is entirely possible even realistic that after a failed relationship, her attitude has changed. But in both periods, she doesn't communicate well. Her modus operandi, of hiding Crucial Info fr her significant other n then expecting them to read her mind, is sure to sabotage whatever relationship she is in.
TH: was indeed a jerk back then. He was busy building up his experience and business 5 years ago. His business n position are now made, and he is more available to be involved. He has grown up, and he has new info on what went wrong. Eric does a fantastic job at portraying that regret n heartbreak.
HJ: feels obligated towards his adoptive mother, n guilty towards AR. This nice guy is driven and governed by 2 very strong motivators: obligation n guilt. IF we see him thru that lens, he'll be a more sympathetic char. Just like in IOIL, JY seemed like a playboy until we get to see his psychological state.
AR: adores this good-looking, nice doctor who has shown her kindness that can be construed to be interest. What has she done that any girl in her position wouldn't do? For all she knows his affair w his GF might be ending. I don't get the hatred for her, unless it's fuelled by identification w the proprietary rights of the current GF or negative feelings re the actress.

I disagree. Being busy in the last 2 years of their relationship and overlooked things sure was his mistakes but that wasn't a jerk. Just like when we get caught up with many things and forget appointments, dates and stuffs. That is no doubt bad but it wasn't intentional hence that doesn't mean a bad person or a jerk.

@gustave154, I'm sure Taeha would drop everything to be at the funeral if he knew Yeoreum's father passed away. Taeha was like a son to Yeoreum's dad at the time. It was unfortunate Yeoreum couldn't tell him straight up when she called which is understandable because she was in distress.... That said, it wasn't like Taeha purposely ignored Yeoreum's called. He was in a middle of a meeting/presentation or tending to an injured staffed at the job site when her calls came in hence he couldn't have ask for more details. Unfortunate circumferences & bad timing but by no mean a jerk to me either

Couldn't agree more with what you said about the 4 lead actors. I came here just for the recap and the comments. It is interesting to see everyone's point of view and thoughts about each character. I like AR as her role in this drama and as an actress. I think k she plays pretty well in the emotional scene. Same as you, I don't get the hatred toward AR. Let's just be honest here, who would not act like AR. She grew up without a family, alone but she is doing well, working and studying hard. She is not sad or bitter about life, always cheerful. Suddenly a nice guy appears in her life, why wouldn't she fall for him knowing well he already has a girlfriend. I guess she just could not help it. Human emotions are hard to control or explain.

I have to disagree with you, looking at how she acted during her happy times with Tae Ha, she is far from being a princess. Granted she "expected" him to come to her during her worst time but then they were in a relationship and she very much needed his support. That is the only "princess act" that she had done but it is very understandable on why she acted that way. Also having your partner bawling her eyes over the phone (continuously) is not something to ignore, granted he was busy but he completely ignored her due to his complacency on their relationship.
As for Ha Jin, she does have the right to throw shade against him! Granted Yeorum is at fault for not telling him about Tae Ha (though I mostly blame it on Sol who pressured her to accept the job and even advised her to keep it a secret) but she had been avoiding Tae ha's advances on her in contrast to Hajin who had been doing almost everything to be closer to Ah Na Rim and free himself of guilt.
As for their relationship, I actually can't hate how Yeorum treats Ha Jin. He was the beta in their relationship and allows her to take control, they both enjoy their roles in their relationship and gains from it. Also as much as how a bitch that she is, she knows how to court HaJin even when he is in the wrong.
I'm still hoping Ha Jin stays with Yeorum (though it is expected that Tae will end up with her just because he is the lead, I just hope that after this episode Yeorum won't go chase after Taeha because it would destroy the love for her character that has just been built) so as not to give Ah Na Rim her happy ending. I just can't get behind her character, she is one big hypocrite who says a lot of things but acts differently. She narrates that she must kept her feelings for Hajin a secret yet does a lot of things just to get his attention. I actually prefer a "bitch second lead" who at least knows that she is stealing another person's man rather than her who acts like an angel yet in reality is a snake.

I disagree as well, Yeo-Reum was if anything, too giving in her relationship w/ Tae-ha - which is why he took it for granted (and thought there was nothing wrong w/ the relationship).
And there have been many times when Yeo-Reum had decided to not bring things up w/ Ha-jin, but at the same time, she is more demanding than when she was w/ Tae-ha b/c that's one thing she learned from that relationship.
Now, that's not to say that Yeo-Reum is Ms. "Nicey-Nice" but that's what I like about her (and for that matter Jum Yumi's chaacter in INR2012) - she has her personality warts and all, but that is what makes her a lot more interesting than Ah-rim.
Speaking of INR2012 - was seeing a lot of similarities in the characters (esp. Jung Yumi's) and in certain situations (the 2nd male lead being adopted, etc.) and there's a good reason for that - the writer for DoR is the same as for INR2012 (as well as INR3).
I'd say that this has been the best written of the 3 (may change upon completion of this series) w/ the rationale behind each character's emotions/actions done well (and much better than in most other K-dramas).
Like in INR2012 - tough for the 2nd male lead to break up the bond btwn the prior couple.
In INR2012, that was someone Jung Yumi'c character grew up with and was her 1st love.
Here, it's Yeo-Reum's 1st love (or at least, 1st real serious love - tho at a later time, while as a university student) and Tae-ha seems to have been the closest with Yeo-Reum's father, being treated like the future son-in-law.
That's something Ha-jin can never compete with Tae-ha - which is why the emotions coming from Yeo-reum and Tae-ha this ep. were so powerful.
One of the things INR2012 had better was the 2nd lead; Kim Ji-seok's character was a bit more interesting and KJS has that charm which is kinda absent from Sung Joon.

True, they have a lot of shared history, including her dad. As well, early struggling experiences shared together are somewhat different and deeper than when you meet later someone while already cruising,
Somehow, her relationship with Ha-Jin just seems more sugar coated although they're a really sweet couple too.

I don't think you can blame Sol for Yeoreum's keeping secret with Hajin about Taeha. Sure Sol pressured Yeoreum to take the job but that was it. Keeping the secret was Yeoreum's wish right from the start even before they were offered that job. Sol & Joon Ho are just to go along as Yeoreum wishes.
I don't mind if Taeha doesn't end up with Yeoreum but all the signs are there that they're actually the right person for each other just because they understand the other one so well. It becomes more evident in the last 2 episodes.

Watch back at episode 4 or 5, Sol was the one who warned Tae Ha not to tell Ha Jin about their previous relationship. It was also Joon ho who warned Yeorum not to tell Ha Jin, granted Yeorum is wrong for keeping it a secret but it was their suggestions and advises that put her in that state.

I don't think Yeo-Reum wants to make everybody act the way she wants them to act. She clearly has a problem expressing her deep feelings, though she has no problem showing her superficial feeling. I think with her attitudes she is trying to ask for people to express to her their feelings without her really asking. She was getting that with Ha Jin at the beginning of the drama. She was so open with Tae-Ha from the beginning and she kept getting shut down as the relationship evolved that she cannot do the same with Ha Jin because of her fears to be shut down. I feel for her.

Which character hasn't lied by omission or just outright lied?
And Tae-hae is way more arrogant (not that I don't mind a bit of that in my characters, esp. female leads).
And is YR who sticks up for and defends HJ whenever TH makes a condescending remark whereas HJ doesn't defend YR when AR makes similar remarks about YR.

I think one of the most significant aspects of the TH/YR relationship & why I am on the same wavelength as the show & understand YR's POV is the fact that YR broke up with TH not immediately after her father's funeral but a MONTH afterwards.
For me, this implies that TH for a MONTH didn't even realize there was anything wrong with YR (so much so that YR herself had to finally ask "don't you think I've been acting strange recently?") We've seen what she was like at the time; completely devastated, scared, clearly blaming herself, and TH was so absorbed with his own concerns that he failed to take note of any of it. She probably blamed him for not coming, but she gave him chances after that. We saw their final train conversation; she was STILL trying ("let's watch it together") and he brushed her off. When she started crying, I, as a viewer, kept getting the sense that he thought she was being melodramatic, and he was tired of her drama. And she was faced with the prospect of having this conversation about her dad with a man who was clearly not very interested in anything she had to say (the point isn't that he would've cared, of course he would, but his general attitude towards her didn't make him seem like someone she could make herself vulnerable to at that point in time.) This episode was powerful because TH realized exactly that. The funeral was an ASPECT, but that he was unable to recognize her agony for a whole month speaks volumes.
& I disagree that she wants people to act however she wants them to act-- she might not have told S and JH, but we haven't seen her blame them for not "guessing".
Re: HJ, we've seen multiple times that YR has prioritized him over TH, as someone she's dating. People hated the way she treated TH when he confessed, by bringing in HJ, but let's be real, if HJ had done the same with AR/YR if AR confessed, he would have been praised for it. She was being mean, yes, but she was also being faithful to HJ. And in no interaction of hers with TH have I yet felt that she's given him the least leeway for misunderstanding her feelings (as often happens). She hasn't allowed herself to emotionally cheat or be swayed. HJ's feelings, on the other hand, seem way more unclear to me and he's only compounding it. (I'm not saying YR doesn't have feelings for TH, she might subconsciously, but she hasn't allowed that to come between her relationship with HJ. Till now she hasn't ever prioritized TH over HJ as HJ has done with AR.)
Also, I don't see how she expects people to treat her like a precious flower? We've seen her admit multiple times that she's not nice, that she can be a bitch, that she has become calculative and cold, and I think that is so powerful for a female character of a kdrama to be able to say, when we're forever used to heroines who fit in the AR mould. KDrama male leads with those traits get appreciated, while kdrama female leads so often end up being...

Totally agree with you, Zoe, about Yeo-reum's character. I understand that the writer structured this story to make the revelations in episodes 9 and 10 that much more powerful, and it worked really well, but I can't help but think that leaving it so late made a lot of viewers give up on Yeo-reum in frustration at her behaviour. It would have been better to have this stuff come out a couple episodes earlier... but then I guess the 16-episode format wouldn't have allowed that, assuming that we have only 6 episodes of story left at this point.

I agree with you too, Laica! Although personally, I'm finding it hard to understand the frustration that other viewers face, maybe because I find Yeo-reum such an interestingly written character that even when she's contradictory or demanding or unfairly blames someone, I like her, because I feel like that's far more realistic than the kind of drama dynamics and heroines we usually get.
Even when I didn't know why she was acting the way she was- in fact I think the actual revelation is FAR more powerful and sympathetic than anything I was expecting- I felt like I understood her in that five years of being with someone who you felt was "lesser" in love with you or you prioritized far more than they did you or made you feel alone and needy is kind of debilitating to your pride and self-esteem. Constantly waiting for someone or being left alone or not listened to can have that effect on a person. We've seen that Yeo-reum found it so difficult to break up because she knew that Tae-ha would find it much easier to walk away (or, as she says, never see her again), that the moment she said it was over, it would be over, which is why she ultimately HAD to do it, even though she was going to be hurt far more by the break-up.
I mean, I can understand that people don't believe that Tae-ha was "bad" or a "jerk" because he just got caught up in life and it's what happens, but I feel like everyone in this world is limited by their POV. Yeo-reum is judging her past by how SHE felt, and not in an intellectual, analytic, dispassionate, causal-observer manner that gives credit where credit is due. It's so interesting that she remembers so many bad parts, while Tae-ha mostly only remembers the good ones, because that gives you such a nuanced picture of who had the power in the relationship. He remembers kissing her and her being cute, while she remembers being waiting for hours, constantly calling. He remembers only the good, because he can AFFORD to remember only the good, since he was less invested, so the bad didn't affect him as much, while the opposite is true for Yeo-reum. She was far more affected by the bad parts because she was the one hurt, the one mostly on the receiving end, which is why her memory of the good times is also colored by that view.
This drama is truly extremely well-written, I feel!

I agree, excellently written. The writer does a really good job with showing how the breakdown of communication between people (not just between YR-TH, but also YR-HJ, HJ-AR and his mom) can damage relationships, sometimes beyond repair, and how memory can be skewed and thus exacerbate these wounds, and create perhaps unhealthy patterns of behaviour as it did in YR's case, making her put up a wall even with those she loves.

What a lovely deconstruction of YR! Must be the most eloquent thorough dissection of YR, of a drama character I have read at DB where I have been nodding M!T!E! through out. Thank you Zoe!
I have never had the frustration with YR as well, I cringed every time coming across a comment calling her the b word, take for example just because TH confessed and it did not affect her as much as most of us are moved, even without what we subsequently found out in e6 (and I am so with you it hit me so much harder than I can ever expect what she went through), I thought it was perfectly logical, why should she be swayed by a speech of meer minutes however moving after years of breaking up and prior to that months or years of neglect?! She was at the bottom of the stairs to meet up HJ anyway, it was not a nice move, but why must she be expected to be nice to TH?!! It is also essential and effective a straightforward 'NO!' I actually bravo'd her. Essential also because that is exactly the tipping point for TH to do the serious soul searching, to make amends out of his own initiation. We need to give time and cause/stimuli for TH to reach where he is at on his own pace and I would rather we have it than a served on a platter easily palatable YR all along. I actually think YR felt a flutter of her heart, same with his kiss at her workshop, or 8 again at her workshop, and certainly now again at her workshop in 10 even earlier when he grabbed her chair closer asking her to come back to her, again at her workshop (if we are going to have a seriously Happy Ending, they need to marry there and have babies there, no joke), but her past unresolved trauma will never allow her to act upon a padam padam towards KTH, still, at this point. Clearly she has grown to consider him a close confidante/friend even if she is not going to admit it, she will admit to she is having a very good time working with him professionally, or else she would not agree to the trip checking out the wood without much fuss. It would not bother her so much she is taken off their future collaboration, nudging him he was the one throwing out the motto of work is work. We still have quite a few hurdles to overcome even after YR can properly overcome her grief and mourn her Father before drama can convince me of a TH/YR romantic OTP endgame.
After the big reveal in 6 and I still hold that thought even after the most powerful heartbreaking loveliest breakup/make amends I have ever seen in a Kdrama, it would still be close to impossible for YR to be romantically involved with TH and I think it is such a marvelous touch TH reached that epiphany himself. I am also hit sooo hard and felt so much sympathy for YR for the month she endured, pulled together to keep a relatively calm functioning front for the sake of TH, out of her love and consideration for him and the stress he is going through, inasmuch she can do no wrong since 6 (and imo I can perfectly follow her logic and...
mookie

...thought all along as well). TH arranged the trip but it must be YR suggesting, I bet to confide Father's passing to him, hoping without the distractions, they can rekindle their falling in love, best scenario reaching out for him and only him for the support she is desperately need and he would not even engage with her small talk, he was even oblivious to her crying. It was a breaking point for her when she was so ready and desperate to dump her grief at him, yet she had to stress herself putting on the calm front and share his worry of the mundane, whether they could catch the ferry.

@mookie
For some reason DB isn't allowing me to reply to your comments directly, but had to say; I agree with EVERYTHING. I just started watching this drama because I was actually waiting for it to get over before committing myself to it, but finally couldn't resist. And it was out of curiosity that I read some comments about YR as I was watching, and was so surprised. It's not even so much that people seem to be reading her differently as much as that the parts I actually LOVE about the character are the ones that a lot of people seem to intensely dislike.
Just like I was so ridiculously impressed by her saying that she is not responsible for TH's feelings and whether it isn't only right that she prioritize her emotional well-being over that of TH's. IDK, it's just a personal opinion but I feel that female characters in general- and I don't even mean kdrama heroines, I literally mean female characters in general- very, very rarely get to voice this. For some reason female characters are never supposed to prioritize their emotions over that of people around them, because that apparently makes them "bad" or "mean". OTOH Male characters often get to be rude or cold or aggressive as a matter of course. I find that :s because, as in this case, YR in no way OWES TH niceness. She had made it extremely clear that she was over TH, that she was with HJ, and that she didn't have a great relationship experience with TH in the past, so if he confesses, HE is responsible for his feelings. She was probably meaner than necessary, but then when people are willing to understand TH's neglect of her WHILE they were in a relationship as something that just happens, I don't think it's that far a stretch to understand her enjoying the power rush for once, especially since they're not even in a relationship and it's been years since the end (after which she begged him to get back together, and he ignored her calls and visits.)
It may not be nice (although, again, YR openly admits she's not very nice), but surely at the very least it's understandable. If YR can so easily be dismissed as needy and whiny for wanting her boyfriend's constant attention while they were in a relationship, what makes TH's pursuit of her while they're in no sort of relationship so tragic and heartrending that people are willing to label YR a bitch? If people are moved by TH's sincerity (and I believe he WAS sincere), why is it so difficult to be moved by YR's past sincerity? TH said that his life has been hell and he's been in pain since he's more in love now, so how is a couple of weeks of "hell" worse than three years of it?
I guess because people seem to dislike YR so much that I'm even more defensive of her because I feel like she's such a great character (which is, of course, different from being a nice PERSON. I don't always need my characters to be nice people as long as their actions are understandable in context) :)

These characters are more complicated than what many posters have made them out to be and way more complicated and multi-dimensional than the typical K-drama.

I'm so glad to meet people who read the characters the same way, it makes viewing even more fun! I was always inclined to be sympathetic to YR, but her no nonsense attitude, her forthrightness (even when she was being bitchy) definitely sold her to me even more. I think one of the best aspects of her character is her self-awareness; while so many of the other characters are in denial about their actions and reactions, like TH having no idea at all why they broke up (seriously, he let her go without having any idea of the WHY and didn't bother trying to patch things up even though he thought she just broke up with him out of the blue, which gives a fair idea of what their relationship was like at the time), or HJ in complete denial about the way he's handling the AR situation.
YR rubs people the wrong way because she bluntly says things that people don't usually say, even if they feel it, because it comes off as bitchy. Like the fact that she engages in a power-play with HJ, which, LOTS of relationships are based around. Many people might, in real life, have felt the urge to have someone call JUST so they can not pick up and make their mood clear, but because YR SAYS that that's what she's doing, she seems like a terrible person. Or maybe I'm a terrible person, because all these aspects of her personality are completely relatable for me, haha.

Yeo-reum, meanwhile, is snooping (= digging the grave of the relationship) and not communicating, nor trying (TH said some very true words with "Tell the truth, give them a chance"); Ha-jin is possessive (you do not take away the phone and say it doesn't matter who says thank you and be her voice when she didn't ask you to). Tae Ha made some mistakes, but we all do, it's human nature. He may not have the best of boyfriends but it speaks volumes that after all these years, TH is the only one she can speak to about this. He may not win the "Best Boyfriend" award but he must have done something right during those 5 years that even now, the only person she is comfortable enough to discuss this with is him. In episode 9, even her mom alluded to the pretense she was putting up, knowing that she (YR) wasn't as "A-Ok" as she would have everyone believe.
Therefore, I infer that not even her mother could broach this topic (her father's suicide) with her, so it speaks volumes, to me, that she can freely and openly discuss this with TH - she said it herself “This person’s warmth, tears, and sincerity reassured me. I felt like I’d gotten lost and only now found peace of mind — someone to tell me that it’s okay, that it’s not my fault. That’s how I felt.”
It's as if she was waiting for him - even after all these years - to truly mourn her father's death. If he was really that bad, there is no way she would have sought him out five years ago, or be able to find solace in him now.

The break-up was due to TH not being there for YR at her greatest time of need - the fact that out of her friends/mother, TH being the one she needed the most (since he was the closest to her father) just as impt. as him not being there for her.

Totally agree. There are things I do not like about every single one of these characters...but there are also many things I do like, and the dislikeable things are so logically presented and natural that these feel like real people, and I do not expect them to be perfect:
- YR is bossy and secretive but also loving, talented, charming, and living with lots of joie de vie.
- HJ is kind and giving, but also a mama's boy overshadowed by his past.
- TH is a geeenius jerk who is slowly, painfully learning what jerkitude has cost him and is learning to think of others and acknowledge his failings.
- AR is cute and spunky and hard-working, but with a sneaky side and a slightly bitchy edge that makes her much more realistic than your average Orphan Candy.
- Sol is so down-to-earth and loyal and witty - yet her eating habits and hygiene make me cringe.
And so on; it's a rare kdrama where so many of the characters feel real to me.

Kang Tae Ha is the most favorite of mine and I think his character is well written and well executed. His transformation from episode 1 to 10 is amazing. Still remember in the first episode (interview section), he said that he doesn't know the reason why they broke up, how he miss her and just wanna know whether she got married or not, or has a boyfriend or not. Then the next episode, he started to tease and flirt with her but always denied he still love her (if I'm not wrong he denied it in the interview section when they were asking why he fought with Ha Jin in billiard place). Then, when he drunk, he said he started to like her sincerely, claimed himself as upgraded product that doesn't mind even if she's using him. This episode, when he drunk, he said to Director Yoon, he can't send her to another guy (whether better or worse than him) even over his dead body. Finally, after all secret of YR's father death came out, he realized his mistakes, apologized and properly broke up with her, and the most important thing, suggested for letting her beloved one to know the real stories.
I can't believe I cried in the last scene. Such a beautiful yet painful scene. Hope to see more screen this two actor for the next episodes. Thumbs up for Eric..

YR is totally the bitchy/princessy type!! sure being late is horrible, absolutely horrible, BUT making a guy kneel as punishment in the streets is way worse! And not being able to tell HJ about her debts and just being honest just shows how much she cares about her own pride instead. I'm pretty sure the writers are going to use that as a way for TH and YR to get back together because 'he understands her the most' and from the past few eps we can also see that TH will always choose YR over other women etc. when HJ chose AR and TH told him off, it shows that had TH known about YR's family situation, he'd have bolted there, but he most likely ignored her cos she probably always calls crying and sulking so he couldn't tell if she was just being clingy.

As much as I enjoy watching the show, I don't feel the chemistry of Sung Joon with his two girls (Yeo Reum and Ah Rim). He has a lot of skinship with Yeo Reum but I don't get their emotional involved. It looks like the director said they need to do those scenes then finished..…that's all!!! And his scenes with Ah Rim seems like two strange person push to have screen together. Another thing is his tearing scene also not convince me to have sympathy for him. Lets forget about Eric-Yoo Mi because they're much senior...I'm not saying his bad actor, but not good enough compare to other young actors in this series such as Yoon Hyun Min and Kim Seul Gi.
However, I love to see Yoon Hyun Min as Do Joon Ho. He doesn't has any skinship yet with Kim Seul Gi, but their chemistry is daebak. Also with Yeo Reum as his housemate. Kim Seul Gi has great chemistry with both Yoon Hyun Min and Director Yoon too..

Taeha isn't perfect but he isn't a jerk BF by choice. The last 2 of their 5 years relationship is when things went down hill for them because Taeha was getting too comfortable with Yeoreum by his side, but the big reason is he got so busy with work that he didn't pay attention to everything else. Yes, it's his fault but that didn't equate a jerk. It was all unfortunate circumstantial it came to that breaking point.
Taeha's ability to piece together Yeoreum's father's true cause of death while her long time friends don't even have any clue. Yeoreum can tell Hajin lied to her when he said they fought at the billiards because cheated on the game because she knows he doesn't like to play foul. That to me right there, these people are right for each other since they understand the other one so well.
EP.10 is the highlight for me so far. Eric & Yumi chemistry doesn't disappoint, actually it's even better than their QSS days. Haven't cried so much in a while and the last scene in this episode did it.

Guh, that last scene... it finally brought back all my QSS Eric-JungYumi feels that I had been anticipating so much with this drama and never got until this week.
I've been watching and following the recaps but not commenting much, but I've tended to agree with commenters who found the leads frustrating and/or irritating, especially Yeo-reum and recently Ha-jin. But as dramallama said, the writer has been giving us clues as the episodes progress, and we finally get the missing pieces of the story this week. So now we understand why things broke down between Yeo-reum and Tae-ha, why their memories of the past are so different and how that shaped their attitude toward each other, and especially Yeo-reum's often counterintuitive dating
philosophy.
As the actions of a person who wants to have a good relationship with the person she's going to marry, they fall short, but as the actions of someone who wants to protect her heart from getting hurt ever again, they make a lot of sense. Because as Tae-ha realized last episode, she suffered a double blow with her father's suicide (which can be seen as a betrayal) and then Tae-ha's indifference, or what to her seemed like rejection, when she was dealing with that terrible loss.
I was finally able to truly understand and root for Yeo-reum this week, whereas before I was watching her with fascination but not much sympathy, because as viewers we finally get where she's coming from (I get why the writer did it this way, but I would argue she might have shot herself in the foot for leaving the heroine unsympathetic for more than half the drama).
It was gratifying as well to see Yeo-reum and Tae-ha face up to their mistakes and wounds from the past and truly "break up" and move on from all that pain and misunderstanding. It was a needed step, no matter how painful, whether they end up together or not (please end up together!). It's obvious now that the imbalance and lack of deep communication that was present between Yeo-reum and Ha-jin from the start is being amplified by their first real crisis, and it's becoming apparent that they're on borrowed time. I still can't understand Ha-jin's refusal to tell Yeo-reum about the past, but I feel like even without that their relationship is doomed now.
Thanks for the excellent recap, dramallama! And all you lovely commenters, I've really enjoyed reading your thoughts/debates over the past weeks! :)

The last two episodes just made me dislike Taeha more amd it's mostly because of his personality so that won't change.
What do you mean you can't wish her well and send her to send her to someone else? You can't send her anywhere because YOU BROKE UP 5 YEARS AGO AND HAVE NO SAY IN HER RELATIONSHIPS OR CHOICES! She's been in this relationship for a YEAR! You obviously still primarily care abput what you want.
Let's break up...AGAIN JUST BECAUSE YOU WEREN'T PRESENT EMOTIONALLY OR INVESTED WHEN YOU BROKE UP YEARS AGO DOESN'T MEAN THAT BREAK UP WASN'T VALID YOU BASTARD! STOP MAKING IT ABOUT YOU!
Oh I get it...you think it's real now because you decided it was a break up versus Yeoreom doing it last time?

I don't think that is Taeha's intentions when he broke up with her at the end of ep 10. I think he wants her to let go of her hatred for him and self blamed for her dad's death. It is closure for the both of them, not just for his sake.

Her burden over her Father's death has NOTHING to do with him...tying it to the break up is making it about him
I know it's supposed to be closure but really it makes no sense. She is crying and leaning on him because he knows and she doesn't have to say it...so she still hasn't confronted the issue of her blame or her Father's death really. She still can't say it.
She got over her hatred of him and had no emotions for him already...her current anger is over his intrusion into her relationship and demands on her

lol your interpretation of that scene is completely over the chart. You should go back and check it for yourself, Taeha did NOT tie the father's death to the break up. IF he wants to break again as a closure for himself, what is wrong with that? If she's over and done with him, does this break up matter all to her?
As for Yeoreum's burden of her father's death, how does it have nothing to do with him when he was he BF? Had he been told about his death, he could be there for her during that hard time (especially she witness her father hanging). Apologizing to Yeoreum for not being there for her is wrong too?
If you're that hateful to Taeha, you should really stop watching.

When he drunk and saying he couldnt send her to another guy whether better or worse than him was the time he didn’t know the fact about her father’s death. But after he realized his mistakes, he apologized even saying Yeo Reum need to tell the real facts to her boyfriend because he realized the chance that he missed. And he said in her studio “let’s break up properly’ means, both party Yeo Reum and Tae Ha should release their misunderstanding, not hating each other and could move on. That why the last sentences he wish her happiness and relieved that he said this sincerely.

His only progress is 1) Realizing how terrible he was 2) Realizing exactly HOW MUCH he wasn't there for her and had no right to make demands
That's just growth into an aware adult to acknowledge the other person's agency and desires instead of selfishly only caring about his own desires

We know how Yeo Reum keep calling him jerk, even though in my opinion what Tae Ha did couldn't be called as jerk. He never hit, cheating, lying or even saying bad words to her. I admit he didn't care much about her after he was involved in his works but before, their relationship was sweet and peaceful. I'm not saying Yeo Reum in the wrong side, but she needed to understand Tae Ha position as the one that will take care of his father's company, study and sometimes guys need to spend their time with their friends and their own hobbies or other activities too. Both were lack of communication. Remember in which episode I forgot, Tae ha thought he gave Yeo Reum best part of chicken or squid (?) but actually she didn't like it. Even after they broke up, Tae Ha keep asking what actually he did that made Yeo Reum keep calling him jerk ( I think the scene in restaurant after they runaway from Ha Jin) and Yeo Reum still saying he needs to think about it.
In my opinion Tae Ha shows his progress to understand about relationship are:
1. He realized his mistakes as he said in her studio "You're right Han Yeo Reum, all were my fault, sorry for making you like this way".
2. He apologized.
3. He suggested her to give chance for her beloved to know about the real facts of her (the chance that he missed to avoid the same mistakes in the future).
4. He comforted her when confused about Ah Rim-Ha Jin relationship and saying nothings going on between them and telling that in Ha Jin's mind maybe seeing them together also strange and Ha Jin till now doesn't know the fact that they're exes, so same as YR, Ha Jin also has the certain reason too (I think this scene was in the lake??)
5. He gave YR place to pull out her sadness over her father's death. And we must admit YR actually really needed the proper cry for years.
6. He wish her happiness with whoever she is sincerely (sincerely means he tried to make down his pride and less selfish)
I don't know about next episodes, but until this 10 episode, Kang Tae Ha's personality is in the correct direction.

That there's nothing between Hajin & Ahrim. And told her to stop being suspicious of Hajin & Ahrim because Hajin could had feel the same had he saw Yeoreum & Taeha together....
HOW ALL THAT ARE SELFISH AND FOR HIS OWN DESIRES?? Looks like you just hate Taeha too much to notice or may be don't want to see at all.

Thanks for the recap.
I liked this ep, too.
"The only thing Tae-ha can do is apologize for finding out too late. Yeo-reum breaks down in tears, so he comes over to comfort her. In a voiceover, she tells us, 'This person’s warmth, tears, and sincerity reassured me. I felt like I’d gotten lost and only now found peace of mind — someone to tell me that it’s okay, that it’s not my fault. That’s how I felt.'”
When this scene started, it surprised me that she admitted what he meant to her. Then I realized, DUH, the pain she was holding onto was directly linked to NOT telling anyone ever about her misery. Not just TH but all her friends were in the dark. Secrets like that will eat at you from the inside.
The moment he consoled her allowed her to remove the block on all of the feelings attached to the time her father's suicide as well as any before. What I am hoping is she will also start remembering the good things from their relationship that TH keeps trying to remind her of.

I love this drama- been spending every weekend yearning for new episodes, and looking forward to all the healthy debates and great recaps here:)
Think this is one of the best dramas i've watched so far.
Eric and Jung Yoo Mi's break-up scene made me teared: they are the reasons why i watch the show. It is easy to have chemistry when there is plenty of skinship, but the chemistry for this pair goes way way way beyond kissing and hugging. They can make sitting next to each other quietly talking so...PAINFUL. They were great together in QSS and even better now!

I am actually very impressed with Jung Yoo Mi- she is lovely not in typical K-drama actress way, but has a sort of pixie vulnerability that lits up the screen. When she acts as the younger Yoo Mi, she actually really seems YOUNG- all dewy, wide-eyed innocence. You can see how she has grown/aged/become more weary, and yet every so often she displays some hint of her childish self.
And yes- the pain of finding your own father - especially if you have been close - dead, by suicide, is not so easily forgotten. Imagine the guilt (could i have done something? Did i miss out a sign? Was it something i did/say? Did i contribute to his depression?); imagine the shame; imagine the pressure of having to tell others. Gosh.
Taeha and Yeo Reum aside, Sol and Joon Ho deserve a shoutout too for being so funny! Kudos to the writer for knowing how to balance between sad and funny:)
I am watching the first two episodes of I love romance 2012 for Jung Yoo Mi- so far so good but not so moving..yet. I didn't watch the first, and i didn't like the third unfortunately (lots of skinship makes for easy watching but after a while the characters and acting felt thin).

Totally agree that JY really does come off as young and innocent in those flashbacks (she looks totally adorable w/ her hair parted to the side).
As for INR2012 - was the best of the 3.
Yes, there are some frustrating things, but the friendship among the girls, the younger friend's relationship issues and JY's character's new romance are a lot of fun.

Maybe I'm biased because I LOVE Jung Yumi (in fact, when she showed up on Reply 1994, it took me a grand total of 0.7 seconds to get over my second lead heartbreak and jump ship, because the sheer possibility of YYS and JY together just blew my mind), but I adore her character here.
The strangest thing is that though I can see why people would compare her character on INR-2012 with DOR, I think they were significantly different too. Her INR character was completely open to making herself vulnerable and said exactly what she felt and was constantly told that she had "no pride", while her character here (in the later years) is pretty much the opposite. Yumi in these roles is my favorite because I feel like she has an undefinable charm and an ageless quality which makes her able to play a grand spectrum of ages convincingly. When she plays younger character, she's positively resplendent (like her first train scene with Eric when she's asking if this is what love at first sight feels like.)
So maybe I'm geared towards sympathizing with her; but I have to admit that I think it's mostly the character. I've mentioned it in a comment above but I'll reiterate that what is extremely significant to me about the TH/YR break-up is that she broke up with TH a MONTH after her father's funeral. I think the fact that he was unable to read her emotions for a month (or simply didn't bother to) is extremely telling. It's usually easy to tell when someone you see every day or are close to is feeling off. Especially if it's someone who is otherwise constantly bright like young YR was. And they even went on a vacation together after that, so it isn't like he was constantly so busy that he didn't have the time to notice. The fact is, at that point, he didn't care. Yes, she didn't tell him on the phone, but the impression that I'm left with is that he didn't ask even afterwards; not why she called him 5 times or why she was crying. There's no doubt he would have cared if he'd known the reason, but if she went through the various stages of grief after that and he was emotionally unavailable, then I find it hard NOT to sympathize with YR.
And it is in that context that I understand her present motivations. Her entire view of the relationship, which she'd lived with rose-colored glasses, is tainted by that last month, when she finally realized how alone she was. And she clearly blames the way she used to be— open, vulnerable, for it. Which is why she now understands relationships as power dynamics, where the person more in love loses. Why she treats HJ the way she does. Although tbh, I haven’t felt like she treats him badly or anything. While HJ has gotten dangerously close to emotionally cheating, YR has made her feelings very clear to TH. Even when she was using him to get to HJ (i.e. when HJ left her crying and went with AR), she made it clear that she was using him, instead of using his feelings for her to manipulate him.

While there are differences btwn the 2 characters, there are similarities as well.
In both, Jung Yumi's character is enjoying a new/newer relationship but the deep emotional ties of her prior relationship keeps drawing her back.
Also, JY's character in both are not afraid to speak their mind, can act a bit "b!tchy" to others and is totally aware of their faults.

Also, carrying on from the earlier point about prioritization; one of the things that bothers me about the HJ/YR relationship is that while YR always tries to reassure HJ about TH-- for instance, by holding his hand or talking to him in a coupley manner etc. when they're all together, HJ doesn't do the same for her. He loves her doing it when TH's around and often enables it, but when she stakes her claim when AR's around, he looks uncomfortable. Like he thinks she's being unreasonable or there's no need for her to act that way. YR always makes her position very clear re: TH/HJ but he often doesn't. He actually had a physical fight with TH that he started, and yet judged her for just CHECKING out who her boyfriend was with while ignoring her calls? And even the way they talk about each other with TH and AR is completely different-- she's constantly selling what a great guy he is, and doesn't want to hear anything bad about him from TH, while HJ, on the other hand, APOLOGIZES for her and agrees with AR when she's talking about YR in not-flattering terms. It might just be good-natured, but I don't think it's a very cool thing to do when you're dating someone. Even apart from their various trust issues, which I can still get my head around and understand why they act the way they act, that is one of the major reasons I side-eye HJ. I need him to take a stand, because I love Sung Joon and I want his characters to always be happy, but some of his character's actions here are definitely red-flag territory.

Hi again Zoe! I keep agreeing with your comments. :)
You're so right about the difference in the way HJ and YR express themselves around third parties - and I think it partly stems from their relationship dynamic, where he, as he said, constantly loses to her and agrees with her because he thinks that's what love is. (And he knows that Yeo-reum is manipulating him and goes along with it, whereas I get the feeling YR thinks she's got him in the palm of her hand and he'll do anything for her. At least she did at the start of the drama; she's starting to realize now how untrue that is.) He says to Tae-ha when they drink together in ep 9 that he can't live without YR because he loves her that much, but I get the feeling that he feels proud of himself/sees himself as praiseworthy for being the one that always gives in. Kind of like he's the martyr and everyone, especially YR, should appreciate him for being such a saint. Which plays into the paternalistic, almost patronising way he talks to her, which was mentioned by someone I think in the ep 9 comments.
The problem with this approach (apart from the obvious) is that he's obviously NOT a saint, he's a human being. And eventually he's going to reach his limit of patience, and then all those time's he's restrained himself from getting mad in the past - which you can be sure are forgiven but not forgotten - will explode out of him in a disproportionate reaction to her actions. Which is, IMO, what we saw happen with his unfathomably harsh reaction to finding out she went to Ah-rim's workplace, and his subsequent abandonment of YR to follow AR. YR says that she's never seen that expression from him before, and it's because all along he was putting himself above her and being the giving one, and now the pendulum is swinging the other way to make up for the imbalance all this time. And in both cases it's unfair to YR. Though she isn't blameless either, because she's always seen their relationship as a game and a struggle for the upper hand. Which both of them thought they had, in different ways.

Haha, we're clearly forming a mutual appreciation society here because I completely agree with all you've said as well!
It's really fascinating how this drama explores different forms of miscommunication; in that though TH-YR might have been dysfunctional because they didn't communicate well in the last two years of their relationship, but that doesn't mean that YR-HJ who constantly sweep their issues under the rug are any better at communicating.
And I feel like you've raised an excellent point re: HJ. Because HJ-YR in present times isn't an exact analogy of YR-TH in the past. The difference is that you can see that YR (especially from her break-up speech) was insecure about their relationship because she was so painfully aware of being far more in love with TH than he was with her, which is why she gave in (allowed him to think her "easy" as she says) and forgave all his actions because she knew it wouldn't be difficult for him to walk away. While I feel that HJ's "giving in" stems more from- as you said- his recognition of himself as a nice guy. I'm not saying he's NOT a nice guy, because I feel like he is, but it's not insecurity which drives his relationship, it's that he believes being that love is taking a hit for the person you love, allowing yourself to be "fooled" by them, and he tries to live up to it, even when it goes against how he actually feels, which makes him feel victimized even when he isn't.
YR definitely has (had?) the upper hand in the relationship to a certain extent, and she got complacent about it, but we've seen that backfire as well, because of his disproportionate reactions. Also, his actions, in his descriptions, always feel far more noble-- like him cooking breakfast for AR because he feels bad that this plucky, hard-working college student can't eat in the morning because of her part-time jobs, or his operating on the underprivileged people that AR knows and thus needing to see her for it. YR doesn't excuse her actions by putting a flattering glow on them, she just tries to reassure him by making him her priority in matters where he should be her priority. HJ is overcompensating for his guilt, while YR is overcompensating for her past hurt, but she's still more open about it. Which, as she's noted, makes her the bad guy, because HJ is so NICE. Like, when she says something about HJ/AR she comes off as the bitch, because he makes it seem like he's helping people and she's getting riled up over nothing at all and hindering his work, while she doesn't have the moral high-ground re: HER work, even though we've seen that she has good work-ethic and most times she meets TH she actually meets him for work, while most times HJ meets AR for "work", he actually meets her for her.

Zoe and Laica I soo agree with your comments and brilliant discussion that is/was happening. Especially the comments about it being a whole month and TH didn't notice or say anything. I went in on him about that on the DoR soompi thread and I still stand by my belief that that made him a jerk and bad guy. I too believe the trip was more YR's idea and it killed me when TH didn't even try. Inspite of all I think TH has grown so much and learned/matured from his last mistakes (the whole "breakup" attests to this, that u feel YR and TH can and should find their way back to each other. Like someone commented earlier, "he's her person". However I would understand and still find it fitting if they don't end up rediscovering the meaning of love with each other.

TH was a jerk in the past- but not in a true jerk way: he was never unfaithful, he was concerned about his co-workers, hardworking BUT yes he was a blockhead, loving people only from his own perspective so what growth!
Same for Yeo Reum- she started off so innocent and open, but has learnt how to disguise her feelings, act tough and close herself up (And watching more of INR 2012- bd5, i m enjoying it!). Can see some similarities between Jung Yoo Mi;s characters BUT again to her credit, i can differenttiate them. They are both in their 30s, single, struggling with past romances BUT in INR2012- yeol mae is more open and hopeful. Yeo Reum- i can really feel her pain, buried deep down. Ok i have a girl crush- i have seen three of Jung Yoo Mi's series and i am very very impressed. Not too much about her online though- there is antoher jung yoo mi who seems more popular.
Ha Jin-- i can sympathise too. There is a lot of guilt- leavin ah rim behind, his gratitude towards his mother, and he was just 12 when everyhing happened. I think he loves Yeo Reum, but his love for Ah Rim is far stronger- he just hasn't realised it i think. You don't spend your whole life being upset/guilty over someone, suffering insomina AND not have feelings for her. And those sort of feelings run beyond boy-girl relationships i think.
Last but not least, so sad that ratings are not so good. Completely under-rated!

Another great episode with wonderful execution especially from Eric-Yoo Mi. For letting go and wishes someone that you love is both, beautiful and painful.
One thing catch my mind, Kang Tae Ha and Yeo Reum actually needed for each other. And true love doesn't need a reason. As Kang Tae Ha said in episode 4 (?) the reason of why he loved her was "She's Han Yeo Reum", then Han Yeo Reum said in this episode " Because…he's Kang Tae Ha".
I hope they'll find their way back for each other and make a lot of babies soon….XD

I just started following recaps and will start watching soon but I got to say just because people don't like the characters or the show doesn't mean they don't get the complexity of the characters or only like typical drama storylines and archetypes.
They just might understand the characters and what the writer is trying to do with the story and not like it. I've noticed people are being a bit condescending in comments for this show, sorry just got to be honest.

I just finished watching ep 12 and I had a very very bad feeling... Without any spoilers, I want to ask... Doesn't it feel like the ending isn't going to be the one we are expecting?... I'm scared now D:

Me too... I finished watching ep 12 just a few seconds ago. I get what you mean. I had the same thoughts too. But I'm fine with it if the story flows really well. Yeo Rum is one lucky gal!

the writer is quite good with playing out her characters. Some episode it looks like YR-TH, next few episodes it looks like YR-HJ.... then repeat playing with us. I guess we just have to tune in to the last episode to find out :D
But agree with @BeeliaJane that Yeoreum is one luck gal!
