Sohn Ye-jin considers dramaland comeback in King’s Face
by girlfriday
I wondered if this project had fizzled, but it looks like it’s back on: There was talk last year of a drama adaptation of the hit blockbuster fusion sageuk The Face Reader, which was planning to head to the small screen in the latter half of this year. The drama version will be called The King’s Face, and producers are now in talks with KBS for a possible slot on the fall schedule, and Sohn Ye-jin (Shark) is being courted to star.
The Face Reader is a witty fusion retelling of the era leading up to Grand Prince Suyang’s coup, focusing on a fortuneteller (played by Song Kang-ho) who reads people’s faces and knows their fates. I highly recommend the movie, though I’d caution you against setting your drama expectations anywhere near the film — it’s a slick blockbuster with a top-notch cast (Lee Jung-jae, Kim Hye-soo, Jo Jung-seok, Baek Yoon-shik, Lee Jong-seok). Still, I’m excited for another version of the story and another incarnation of Song Kang-ho’s memorable fortuneteller.
The drama adaptation will shift the focus onto Prince Gwanghae, over a century later in Joseon. He was born to a concubine and struggled for legitimacy even when enthroned, always fearing for his life in an unstable political position. The drama will tell the story of Prince Gwanghae as he uses face-reading as a weapon to recover his destiny and become king. I can see why they might want to use face-reading for good in the drama version, though the constant danger of Grand Prince Suyang kept us on our toes in the movie (in a really good way). Sohn is being courted to play the leading lady loved by two men, one of them Prince Gwanghae.
It’s far from a done deal, but the drama is angling for the Wednesday-Thursday slot following Iron Man (which comes after Joseon Gunman). There must be a bit of a feud going on for that November timeslot, because in all the recent casting news, Song Ji-nah’s new drama Healer is planning to air after Iron Man too. I guess we’ll have to wait until the dust settles at KBS to know who’s up before the year is out (and if it picks up The King’s Face at all). Is it too late to vote for Iron Man to get pushed to 2015?

Can´t agree that the movie set a high standard that the drama has live up to. Sure, the movie had high production values but the story seemed to not have a direction, in the end the writers did not seem to know what they actually wanted to do, so the tragic ending seemed almost comical considering the mood and atmosphere before it.

I agree. I thought that other than the acting, every other aspect of the movie was okay to mediocre.

Same here, I found the movie pretty underwhelming. Not terrible, but not really a masterpiece either. I'm glad that the drama will be set in a different era with a different plot (presumably) rather than just being a remake.

When you call it a blockbuster in more than one place in your writing, do you mean it was a box office daebak (it wasn't) or a critical success (it wasn't)?

Loved the movie but it feels so recent for a drama version. I don't mind if they push it back to 2015.
Bring on "Healer"! I want me some Yoo Ji-tae.

I forgot to mention sth! This is her first time starring is saeguk, right?! If so,that's refreshing for her & I like to see her in saeguk dramas! :)
PS:DramaGods! please help the writer NOT MESS with the drama & make it as hit as the movie! Son Ye Jin deserves a well-written drama after "Shark",which I think wasn't well-written!

The love triangle sounds similar to that in Empress Ki. Plus, Prince Gwanghae's character description is like TaHwan's - "struggled for legitimacy even when enthroned, always fearing for his life in an unstable political position". /:-|

But SYJ wouldn't be the queen right?
I'm more excited to see who will be the face reader. Song Kang Ho left a big shoes to fill.

With all the hype of the "Face Reader" and the commercial success, I thought this would be one of those epic and awesome movie. Unfortunately, it wasn't. There was no direction, hardly any storyline, and completely useless and boring. I kept telling myself that it'll get to a better part if I just keep watching over and over. And what do you, nothing interesting happen. Even the ending was stupid. I didn't cry and I thought it was a slap to my face. Can I just say that after watching this movie, I want my hours back?
