Reawakened memories set course for chase thriller in Reset
by girlfriday
OCN’s newest crime thriller Reset is revving up for its premiere in just a few weeks, and in the latest set of teasers we learn a little more about the premise, our characters, and finally catch a glimpse of our leads in action together. They’re calling it an image transformation for both actors, but I’ve seen Chun Jung-myung play serious roles before; it’s Kim So-hyun who will likely turn heads, since here she plays both the hero’s angelic first love trapped in his memory, and a rebellious teenage girl who might very well be a criminal in her own right.
Chun Jung-myung plays a prosecutor who has the ability to hypnotize people — hence the clicky pen, which has been featured in almost all the teasers for the show. I didn’t get the association at all, and kept wondering what his obsession was with that damn pen. He uses the skill to hypnotize people as he’s questioning them, which totally does not sound like a legal thing a prosecutor can do, but what do I know. More importantly, he uses hypnosis to unlock his own memories (I’m not even going to ask how a person goes about hypnotizing himself), and a fifteen-year-old trauma resurfaces.
Just as the statute of limitations is about to run out on the murder of his first love (Kim So-hyun), he encounters a girl who looks just like her in the present day. She looks like quite the badass delinquent, and I can’t wait to see Kim So-hyun play against type in a dark thriller since she’s so often the sweet perfect girl next door. In one of the teasers, she cries that she didn’t mean to kill someone, but ends up framed for murder and locked up.
The hero has to piece together his fractured memory of the original crime, save the present-day girl from going down for murder, all while chasing the mysterious killer X who’s chasing them. And he’s not even a vampire? That sounds like a lot of heavy lifting for a guy whose main skill is hypnosis, but okay.
Reset premieres Sunday August 24.

This definitely looks interesting, but could they not afford a better wig? I mean, really.

Chun Jung-myung needs to realize that the true criminal here is the wig. That monstrosity must have cannibalized another wig WHILE staying atop of Kim So-hyun and therefore, goes undetected for its heinous crime.

Uh . . . okay, let's just say the "hypnosis" science in this one is only marginally more credible than that of Vampire Prosecutor or Lucy and go with it, alright?
It looks intense, but I hope Kim So-hyun gets to change expression once or twice per episode.

yes, hypnosis has been scientifically proven to be questionable due to something called "false memories." Basically, something that did not actually take place but the person thinks it did. It has lost credibility in the judicial as well as clinical systems because of this.

That is also why in a lot of cases lie detector tests are also discredited or can't be used as actual evidence. Because false memories and truths that the person believes will effect the result.
Also the way a question is asked, wording as well as tone can produce false readings as well. They did a test on it and found that in most cases you would get a "lie" reaction of just saying "have you ever.." and not even finishing the question. Because people get nervous about what you will ask.

Not only that, it is pretty much impossible to hypnotize someone who doesn't want to be hypnotized, or at least hasn't volunteered to focus on the hypnotist. Which is why a good hypnotist stage act always keeps a few fakes in the audience to keep the show from crashing.

Thought I was the only one who thought that wig's atrocious. Would be more interesting if the innocent-looking girl's the delinquent one and the badass-looking girl's the sweet girl next door.

Nope. Still not buying that ersatz of Vampire Prosecutor. Changing the gimmick to find clues doesn't hide the fact that the king is naked. I also prefer not to compare the hotness (coldness?) of our male leads... I hope that at least the girlfriend's mistery will be interesting.

Kim So Hyun, I've never seen her play sweet girl next door roles, all her younger acting credentials have been, horrrid, spoilt and evil girls if I remember correctly, I have never liked her roles, because she always acts the bisch.....She plays those roles very well though, credit too her.
Is there drama's that she has been in that showcase the sweet girl next door persona?

I actually like her better for showing that kind of range, she broke the 'bad girl' typecasting with Ma Boy and I Miss You (episodes 1-5).
Warning though, if you are watching IMY for her, STOP WATCHING AFTER EPISODE 2. I'm serious. She's phenomenal in the role, though - better than even Yoon Eun-hye who played the adult version of her character.

Hi pogo,
why stop after ep. 2 of IMY? Does it get graphic (maybe not, since it is a drama), really disturbing maybe? (if so, in what ways?) I didn't watch that drama when it came out, and I have not really read anything about it. I am just curious...

Not graphic, but certainly traumatising to watch. Basically, the event that is the cause of the child characters separating is something that I don't want to give spoilers for. But let's just say that to an average kdrama viewer, even knowing what is implied is going to make a lot of people feel ill.
I can't say that the drama handles the issue badly, since the message it sends out is a lot more positive than, say, Gu Family Book (to give you a hint of what I had a problem with, since I know we talked in those recaps and especially about the treatment of women in that series).
But things in IMY take a turn for the extremely makjang after ep 3 so this is just a heads-up. The actors are good though, and the child leads (KSH and Yeo Jin-gu) are phenomenal.

I always thought Kim So-hyun was a cutie on top of being really talented, but she is a stunning beauty in that still with the red hair and smoky eye makeup! Absolutely breathtaking.
(and why do they have the bad bob wig for her anyway? Why does it have to be an awful wig?)

I completely believe that she can play evil. Didn't she play the child version of the sister who left behind her step sister on purpose in Rooftop Prince? I completely bought her in that show; in fact she was better than the actress playing the character as an adult if I remember correctly (or it could have been the role).

Chun Jung-myung? My sweet-faced baby-jussi? Yes, please hypnotise meeee
Kim So-hyun? She has an amazing acting repertoire for her age! Looking forward to her pulling off the lost first love and delinquent trashmouth!
Plus, 1 actor playing 2 roles seems to be the "trend" this year! (think BotC, High School King...)
Thanks for the news, gf!
