One last barrage of promos for the swashbuckling Three Musketeers
by javabeans
We don’t have much longer to wait before tvN premieres its latest drama, Three Musketeers, this coming weekend, so why not prepare for the event with a whole slew of pretty pictures?
I’d call the drama as a whole an ensemble piece, but it feels a bit like a two-headliner deal with Lee Jin-wook in the lead as the crown prince, and Jung Yong-hwa getting a sizable chunk of the narrative as the d’Artagnan character, named (to rhyme, sort of) Park Dal-hyang. You know, once I would have cringed mightily at that, especially when fellow musketeer Yang Dong-geun is so charismatic (while Jung Hae-in is a question mark as the rookie), but I think (hope) Yong-hwa could do really well with a fun, energetic role. I’m still dubious on his melo or dramatic skills, but a fun swashbuckler? Could be just the thing.
(Note: I did just see him perform live at KCON a few days ago and I finally connected with his appeal — the guy does still suffer from stiffness in front of the camera when playing gentle nice guys (see: Mi-rae’s Choice, You’re Beautiful) but performing as himself, he’s an absolute dynamo. I really, really hope he figures out how to translate that verve into his drama character.)
The drama looks to continue in the action-packed, stylish directorial style of its producing team, which brought us Queen In-hyun’s Man and Nine, both of which I enjoyed tremendously. So it’s a bit of an understatement to say I’m looking forward to their latest collaboration, and you can see that the expectations are high on the producers’ end as well with their blockbuster budget and three-season format (twelve episodes each season). Below are a short teaser and a longer trailer that presents a collection the highlights from Episode 1.
Sunday, here we come!

I really love the Three Musketeers movie so I'm looking forward to this one...I love D'Artagnan's role the most so I'm looking forward to this...Wonder who is Constance in this Kdrama?Coz the original has the Princes so its Crown Princes...Anyways, more than the Crown Princes role, why am I rooting for the Milady role?I always love a kickass lady role and base on the teaser..Crown princes seems to be the typical damsel in distress. Girl!!We ladies need to step up!!I'm giving you few episodes before I finally side on Milady..lol...
I'm loving TVN dramas lately and this drama is big budgeted and the staff is promising so I'm excited..

Based on the character descriptions, the Crown Princess (LJW/Athos's wife) is Constance.

But in the movie there is a princess and constance so I hope they dont dwell on the love triangle that much coz The Three Musketeers is more on thw brotherhood and we dont get a lot of that in Kdrama. It always is the guy who gets the girl, the guy who is super nice but didnt get the girl, the girl who gets the guy and the girl who is a bitch who had her chance but blew it and now he wants him back..lol..

On the bright side, she apparently isn't going to have to be prim, dour, and suffering most of the entire series, like most "good girls" in Sagueks.

Damn but that highlight reel looks good. :D :D So looking forward to this!
And I'm thinking I might be able to interest my sister in watching it with me because it's a sageuk and it's the Three Musketeers. Win-win :D

I'm sorry but so far, I just CAN'T buy Yonghwa in this role. He sticks out like a sore thumb in the historical setting and he just always looks surprised? It got a little better when he started talking though. I wish they had made him the other young character because then he'd have a smaller, less noticeable role.
I'll still check it out tho because it's TvN and I like Lee Jin Wook and the costumes look gorgeous. Maybe I'll finally be able to get into a historical. I'm keeping my expectations fairly low though.

I love this production team, I like the Three Musketeers story, but I am afraid Jonghwa is going to just kill it for me. He has this slack-jawed, wide-eyed stare, sortof like a slightly surprised basset hound, and he has the same face Everywhere (oh, wait. he actually smiled in one of the stills, but it looks like a BTS.)
When I think of D'Artagnan, I think of how Michael York played it - exuberant, mischievous, filled with youthful enthusiasm and loyalty and horniness. It is his coming-of-age story, how he learns about treachery and cynicism and loss but finds new reasons to keep going. I don't see Yonghwa being able to pull this off, not in a million years. Perhaps they are going to make this more about the actual Three Musketeers, so that the real actors can carry the story.

IKR?!
I actually think he'll do well in a romcom with Suzy.
They both give such a cute vibe, and I'm sure they'll work well in a light romcom. It's not a bad thing. Lots of people like light romcoms.
I just can't see him as having a deep, strong, fighting spirit in such a drama. His picture with a rifle seems OK, but not with a sword. Maybe learning martial arts will do it for him. Maybe he should try it again in few years.
I'm trying not to sound icky- no offense intended. There are different types of dramas, and most actors, even great ones, don't fit every single type.
I liked him in the romcoms I saw him in. I thought he was very sweet.

JYH's hair should get it's own description...
Other than that the show is ready and so am I!
Ps. so cool that you've seen JYH live! He should never quit singing to pursue an acting career...

Oh my God!! Yonghwa's jawline ^o^
I'm pretty sure Yonghwa is camera's favorite, I found his photos extremely stunning, though I'm not his fan.

It's funny - I am a fan (of his music and of CN Blue), and I think he looks way too thin in these pics and the promos I saw on youtube. I admit to a shameful sort of double standard, but I really, really don't like it when guys get very thin.

Ooooh, I really like the looks of our lead foursome. I was pretty nervous about Yonghwa, but there's that moment at the end when he talks and I quite liked the attitude he gave off in that scene. I rookie also looks promising. And the other two...well, I love them.
I'm a little wary about the lead girl, but I've yet to dislike a female lead from this writer so I'm not too worried.
Can't wait.

Mind you, I am a fan of Jung Yong-hwa but there seem to be an inordinate amount of still of him/he is in compared to the others. Is it me?

The trailer shows a more Yong-hwa centric story than I was hoping for. I don't think he's a strong enough actor to be showcased in front of his colleagues. Hopefully it's only for promotional purposes.

I think yonghwa has a tendency to overthink when he acts, you can sort of see the wheels turning in his head. I've seen him perform as well and he has immense stage presence. He's one of the few kpop idols who knows how to connect with the audience. So I agree with you about hoping he'll channel that into his drama role

So I get that they're combining Queen Anne and Constance into one character,...and Lee Jin-wook is playing a combination of Athos and King Louis?? o_O
I really hope this is good--especially the villains. The recent BBC adaptation had its flaws but Capaldi and McCoy were great.

Well, at least he LOOKS the part of a Korean d'Artagnan, even if it doesn't turn out he can act like one. But ugh, that ponytail. I hope he puts it up in a topknot when he gets in the guards and keeps it there. I love the Three Musketeers and sageuks so hopefully this show turns out really good.
