Name That Drama: Lies, monks, and Uptown Girl
by javabeans
Can you name these dramas? As always, feel free to email us your questions and requests for future Name That Drama installments.
- Lucy has a pretty good, detailed description of a drama I bet you’ll know:
One thing I really remember was its catchy theme song. I would hum it if I could, but no.
The main character was really spunky and adorable, with black curly hair. I think she was a professional con artist. I found the male characters rather forgettable, and wasn’t quite sure which one was the lead and which one was the secondary male. I just remember that one of them was really feminine looking, with super long locks that covered half his face, and the other was quite good looking, but was plagued with expressions of stoic blandness.
I don’t remember much about the story line, but some of the themes included farting and lying. I’m not sure why the farting scenes seem so vivid to me, but there was a lot of farting in this drama. I think it was supposed to link lying to farting: you can’t keep it in for too long.
There was a bed scene in the drama, where it seems that the main girl took advantage of the male lead. It showed her sitting on the bed smirking, while he was wailing under the covers about his lost innocence.
And that’s all I remember! Sorry if the details are inaccurate. This drama was Korean, but dubbed in Chinese, and my mother had to translate most scenes into English for me, so many of my interpretations may be wrong.
Thank you so much!
- mommai asks:
I’m having trouble remembering which drama has these parent characters in it, so maybe everyone can help. I’m sure I’ll facepalm about it. The heroine visits her dad who is in a monastery as a Buddhist monk, so he formally had to cut family ties, but her mom hangs out there and cooks for the dad sometimes. The only thing I can remember at the moment is the parents, and it’s driving me nuts! It’s likely a lighter K-drama (because that’s what I tend to watch). Help is appreciated!
- Know which billionaire TiaRae’s talking about?
When I first got involved watching K-dramas, I watched one with a billionaires family with two sisters, one being a designer if I remember correctly. They are dating brothers but don’t know it in the beginning. The younger sister ends up getting married and so the older sister has to break up with the other brother. I remember the sisters lived in a house that was on a hill and the older sister was always outside talking to the boyfriend as he parked outside. I thought this drama had the name “billionaire” in it but all the ones I have found don’t seem to be the right one. Hope you can help as I want to watch it again… Thanks!
- April28’s show sounds like a cute one:
A Korean sitcom from I think early 2000s! From what I remember there were three or four girl roommates living together and another group of guys living amongst themselves but of course, comical antics and romance ensued. I specifically recall this one girl always wearing a green tracksuit despite putting on an air of elegance and femininity to her boyfriend which her roommates constantly taunted for her. And in one scene her drunk boyfriend was waiting for her outside her place and while kissing her ended up throwing up on her mouth/over her!
- macadamia asks:
I was hoping you guys could help me identify a K-drama that aired a few years ago. It’s pretty dated, and all I remember is one scene from it where a male character (played by Kim Sung-min of Fantasy Couple I think) is driving in his convertible while “Uptown Girl” (the Billy Joel song) plays on the radio, and he sings along. I think his character might’ve also been a cheater. I’ve scanned through Kim Sung-min’s repertoire and dug around a bit but just can’t seem to find what I’m looking for.
Sorry there’s not much to go on and thanks for the help!
- Aw, the line Cassie quotes is a heart-tugger:
Okay, so I remember watching this drama, but since I watch gazillion dramas, I can not remember from which one I heard this quote. It’s been bugging me forever and I hope someone can help me.
The female lead used to be sick but had gotten a lot better. She was fine now, but when she broke up with her boyfriend, she said:
“The doctors would ask me how much it hurt from 1 to 10, and I would always say 9. They would say I was brave for saying 9, but truthfully it was because I was saving my 10 for a moment like this.”
Pretty sure it’s a k-drama, since I only watch k-dramas.

Oh gods. That whole description had me cracking up!
Yes, yes! That was all in My Girl!
When Joo Yoorin was left at home with Seol Gong Chan, she was so scared she'd take advantage of him.
She imagined herself in the "after sex" scene. Lee Dong Wook was crying under the covers, and Lee Da Hae was buttoning up her polo and patting Lee Dong Wook, all "Eh. You did well... don't cry."

I also remember she pushed up lots of furniture against her bedroom door. Afraid that she might jump Gong Chan.
When he heard her piling stuff against her door, he thought she was accusing HIM of wanting to jump her bones. He ordered her to open up and stop thinking of him badly, but she just did this funny "RAWR!" motions at him that freaked him out and made him run away. Hehe :D

I might rewatch it as soon as I finish watching Hotel King...

Hehe, nope.
He DID imagine something similar. When he was nice to JYR after that tennis player's party and JYR was shying away because she realized she liked him.
Gong Chan imagined that JYR was icked out by the Oppa thing. When he turned around holding his jacket, "Oppa will take care of you." JYR kept trying to avoid him, but he put the coat around her and complimented her earrings, making weird biting motions towards her.
Hahaha!
Waah, it makes me wanna watch MG again.

'Stoic blandness' I laughed so hard.
I used to call the 'really feminine looking' one animeface. Gosh he's come a long way since then.
Best drama tbh, forever got a special spot in my heart.

It's the only weekend drama I watched :P The guys are cousins and elder sister is a shoe-designer.

I wonder though... the older sister is married in the beginning, has a kid, and lives somewhere else. It's such an atrocious situation (the husband, the divorce and everything) I'd think the poster would remember something of this? Or maybe not.
But in any case, if this is the drama, I don't recommend watching it. It's as awful as they get.

It sounds like the story of Thousand Kisses.
I only finished it because of the actors. At first it was nice but later... It was sad that the second couple (the older woman with the child and the younger man) did get so much pain from their familys.

No 1 - The first that jumps to mind is My Girl -2005.
Spunky adorable girl with curly black hair - Lee Dae Hae. Stoic bland male - Lee Dang Wook and feminine male with long locks - Lee Jun Ki, although many here will kill you (if they can get their hands on you) for calling them forgettable! He he....
Catchy theme song and lots of lying. I don't remember the farting and the described bed scene though. One of the best dramas ever, IMO.

The "bed scene" takes place when all the adults in the household (I say adults loosely as in gramps, aunty & handyman) aren't home and is actually an imaginary scene where Yoo Rin (DH) is imagining what would happen if she didn't lock her door and ended up taking advantage of Gong Chan (DW) LMAO
As for the farting, I don't really remember that, but I do remember there is lots of indigestion and burping involved as they are side effects of Yoo Rin's lying.

the "bed scene" takes place when the adults (I say adults rather loosely bc they're all technically adults lol) are not there for the night and it's actually an imaginary scene where Yoo Rin (DH) imagines what would happen if she didn't keep her door locked and ends up going over to Gong Chan's (DW) room and taking advantage of him LOLOL.
As for the farting, I don't remember farting at all, but I do remember lots of indigestion/burping bc those were the side effects of lying for Yoo Rin.

Yes, yes, yes! (:
I remember two instances of farting in My Girl
1) Yoo Rin trying to mend up the relationship of Auntie and Handyman, and gets footage of Auntie tearfully painting her lover, then subsequently farting...LOL
2) Yoo Rin pretends that Gong Chan farted in the elevator and makes everybody look at him with total disgust HAHA

For 6 - I'm pretty sure that I heard it in the movie that I watched recently at the movie theater with my friend. But it was not an korean one but an american movie from this year.
The title was "The Fault in Our Stars". The story is about a sick teenage girl (Hazel), who has cancer for many years and who meets this boy (Augustus) who had cancer too.
Every time the doctors asked her this questions, she answered with a 9, because she was saving the 10 for something more painful.
A very sad movie by the way. We cried at the end of the movie T_T

I've only been watching Korean films and K-Dramas for a year. At some point I realized I'd better keep track... was running into just these problems that drove me nuts. I created a Word doc where I keep a running tally. Usually scanning the list jogs my memory... and if not at least I have some titles to go by and can look up the details. Right now at 91 movies and 44 completed series. Oy.
I've created a separate Word doc of what I'm watching currently.
