Marriage Not Dating: Episode 16 (Final)
by LollyPip
Marriage Not Dating wraps up in a satisfying and poetic way, bringing us back full circle to remind us why we’ve all loved this couple so much. They stay true to themselves as the show manages to tie up all the loose ends nicely, leaving me feeling like everyone gets the ending they deserve. It’s definitely made its mark as a memorable and wonderfully fun drama, and I know I’ll miss Ki-tae and Jang-mi and their crazy, messed-up families very much.
EPISODE 16: “Nevertheless, marriage”
Ki-tae and Jang-mi stand in their wedding finery, at an altar under a stormy sky, both of them looking angry and hurt. Jang-mi says, “Let’s fold.” Ki-tae asks if this is what she really wants, with no regrets, and she stonily replies that it is. Ki-tae turns and walks away, leaving Jang-mi alone at the altar.
In the present, business is bustling again at “Ju Jang-mi” thanks to Ki-tae’s mother’s kimchi, and Jang-mi, Hyun-hee, and Yeo-reum are on top of the world. But Ki-tae has the unenviable job of bursting Jang-mi’s bubble by telling her of her mother’s breast cancer, and she listens in teary silence as she thinks to herself how life is full of surprises, and the worst always comes along with the best.
Jang-mi goes straight to her mother, who would rather talk about how she’s hurt that Jang-mi didn’t tell her she was dating Ki-tae for real. Jang-mi says that’s not important and asks why Mom hasn’t told Dad she’s having surgery in two days. She thinks Dad will drop the divorce if he knows, but Mom says that’s why he can’t know – Dad will act sympathetic and come back, and she’ll be stuck with him.
While they talk, Ki-tae accidentally finds the envelope of postcards from Dad and swipes them. Mom gripes at him for being a tattletale, tells him that she’ll never accept him and Jang-mi, and kicks them both out. Ki-tae suggests they go see her father, since they now have his address.
As he drives Ki-tae tries to lighten the atmosphere, but he’s thwarted by Jang-mi’s bad mood at every turn. Finally he pulls over at a rest stop (also against her wishes) and orders lunch, saying he needs energy to endure her while she takes her upset out on him. He finally gets Jang-mi to eat by saying they can leave as soon as the food is gone. So cute.
Jang-mi asks why Ki-tae went to see her mom in the first place, and he says he was jealous that she was getting so much affection from his mother and he wanted the same from her mom. She’s thankful that he did, since now her mom won’t have to have surgery alone.
They find the little pond where Dad’s been spending his days fishing, but he’s not there. Ki-tae notices Jang-mi looks pale and she runs to throw up, but thankfully it’s only from eating so much on a nervous stomach (and possibly also because Ki-tae just grabbed her and scared the crap out of her).
Ki-tae offers to take Jang-mi to the hospital, or the pharmacy, or to get married… Jang-mi’s, “Stop it! Wait, what?” reaction is priceless. She accuses him of joking around to cheer her up, but he mutters that he wouldn’t put his life on the line just for that. Jang-mi wants to wait until they’re sure but Ki-tae is sure now, and Jang-mi gives him an epic side-eye.
She tells him it’s not the right time because of everything her parents are going through, and commands him to take it back. But Ki-tae is sure her parents will make up, and even bets on it: If her parents get back together, Jang-mi has to marry him. I love his reasoning, that if the worst marriage she knows can work out, then surely theirs will too.
Jang-mi wants to know what was in her dad’s postcards to make Ki-tae so sure (he previously told her it was the sweetest love letter he ever read, hee) and grabs them from him. He reclaims them and they adorably tickle-hug-wrestle for possession of the envelope. A passing fisherman picks up the envelope when Ki-tae drops it, and says he knows the man who wrote it, and that he was heading to Seoul today to close his chicken restaurant.
Having put the restaurant up for sale, Jang-mi’s dad is pretty drunk on soju by the time they find him, and he roars at Ki-tae for having the nerve to show up here. Ki-tae stammers that he’s dating Jang-mi, which enrages Dad even further, and he shoves Ki-tae against the wall yelling at him for hanging around his daughter but not intending to marry her.
Jang-mi’s insistence that she’s unsure about marriage just makes Dad even angrier and he demands to know what Ki-tae did to make her uncertain. When Jang-mi asks what Dad ever did to give Mom assurance, it takes all the fight right out of him, but the news that Mom has cancer hits him even harder.
Jang-mi tells her dad to go to the hospital but he says that he won’t, since if her mom didn’t tell him she was sick it must mean she really hates him. He thinks his presence will only make her upset and she’ll feel worse. Oh, this is so sad.
Outside, Ki-tae hugs Jang-mi and tells her to go see her mom, and he’ll stay with Dad. She says sadly that their bet is over since her parents will never see eye-to-eye, but Ki-tae still has hope. She tries one more time to see what’s in the envelope, but Ki-tae promises to show her when their bet is really over.
Jang-mi climbs into bed with her mom and promises to be her life partner and never leave her. Mom says that sounds terrible, but Jang-mi says as long as Mom is against Ki-tae, she’s stuck with her, which makes Mom smile a little.
Meanwhile Ki-tae drinks with Dad, who’s calmed down enough to say that he understands that Ki-tae was just being cautious with Jang-mi. They commiserate over how hard it is to be around women who have to talk everything out, while men just get each other without speaking. Hilariously though, Ki-tae does say he likes how it’s easy to just say a few words to a woman and everything is fine. Hint hint, Dad. Go talk to your wife.
Ki-tae’s mom sits up alone late at night and is joined by Grandma, who also can’t sleep. Grandma says she has something to confess and asks if Mom remembers when she left home with Ki-tae. She tells Mom that Ki-tae thinks of those as his happiest days, but Mom remembers them as lazy days. She didn’t cook or clean, just spent all her time with her son. Grandma says that’s why Ki-tae was so happy.
Sadly, Grandma says it’s time that she let Mom go. She gives her permission to stop being the perfect wife and daughter-in-law, and tells her to just go be Ki-tae’s mom. Mom cries tears of relief, and asks what Grandma will do without her. Mi-jung enters the room, having overheard everything, and says Grandma has her and they’ll be fine. All three women dissolve into sobs and hold each other, but they aren’t sad tears – they’re tears of love and understanding. ~sniffle~
Ki-tae and Jang-mi talk to her mother’s doctor, who’s optimistic about her surgery prognosis. The only concern is that she will lose that breast, but Ki-tae tells Jang-mi not to worry, since he knows a great doctor. Se-ah enters right on cue, and offers to do the reconstruction surgery at the same time as the removal, so Jang-mi’s mother doesn’t have to live through the shock of having only one breast.
Jang-mi’s mother waits for her surgery, and she’s the only patient in the room who is alone. She sighs at all the other ladies who have husbands, boyfriends, and sons to support them, but pretends disinterest when her own husband shows up. Awww. She texts him to leave but he says he can’t read it, because he smashed his cell phone in anger and he wants to talk to her face-to-face. Well finally.
He hands her a bankbook which shows a balance of over 50 million won (around $50,000) which he got from the sale of the chicken stand. She’s touched that he sold the place she hated so much, but holds onto her pride and says she’s glad she got sick, because he finally left after she was ill. He yells that he never wanted a divorce, and he’s angry that she didn’t tell him she was sick.
Mom argues back with a wibbly voice that yeah, she’s sick, and so is everyone else here, but the other patients tell them to continue because this is more riveting than a drama (ha). Dad asks haltingly if he can stay with her, but Mom is stubborn and tries to give the bankbook back. It’s cute how the other women in the waiting room urge Mom to take the money and kick the man out, but the men are all “These women are so disloyal!” Mom grudgingly takes the money (and Dad), to a round of applause.
Jang-mi and Ki-tae watch from outside the room, and Jang-mi cries a few tears and notes that the reunion befits her parents. They go for a walk and Jang-mi asks to see her dad’s letter, but says it’s nothing special when she sees that they just ask if Mom has eaten or if she isn’t sick. Ki-tae counters that “nothing special” is pretty special, since only spending special occasions together like his parents do doesn’t mean much.
Ki-tae wonders if he should start proposing now that the bet results are in, but Jang-mi stops him again. She wants a fancy proposal, but Ki-tae argues that he prefers the simple everyday conversations like her dad’s letters. Jang-mi says she worries that he’s only proposing since her mom is sick and he wants to take care of her. She asks Ki-tae to wait, but he rightly says if they wait until all the drama is over, it will never happen.
Jang-mi pouts that Ki-tae’s proposal isn’t very romantic. Ki-tae just says that life is uncertain and full of twists, and you never know what may happen, and there’s no such thing as complete assurance that marriage will last, but nevertheless, he wants to marry her and love her forever. Jang-mi finally cracks a smile and counters that you can’t trust men, but nevertheless, she wants to trust Ki-tae. And with that, they’re engaged.
Jang-mi asks if he doesn’t have something for her like oh, maybe a ring, and when he shrugs she commands him to take the whole thing back. Hee. They can’t do even the most romantic things without fighting. He teases her out of her grump, but in voiceover Jang-mi says that back then, they never expected the worst life-twist that was ahead for their wedding.
Ki-tae’s mom serves tea to Grandma and Mi-jung and says she’s been thinking about what Grandma said. Before she can announce her decision, Dad comes running in to excitedly tell them he’s been promoted to university president. I love how all three of the women’s faces are like, So what, jerkface. When he asks for congratulations, Mom says he ought to congratulate her, so he starts in with the lip service of how he owes it all to her. He thanks her and she asks for something in return… a divorce. Dad’s shocked face is so satisfying.
He turns to Grandma for support, but Grandma tells him to give her the divorce. Mom asks for the house, and invites Grandma and Mi-jung to live with her not as in-laws, but as friends. The women are as touched as Dad is horrified, and they all hug again leaving Dad out in the cold. Sooo satisfying.
After a successful surgery, Jang-mi’s dad cuts fruit for Mom and tells her his plan to open a pizza delivery place. She grouches that it’s not much better than chicken and lets him know that she still hates him, but she’s taking him back so as not to burden Jang-mi. She says she’ll use the money from selling the chicken place for Jang-mi’s wedding, asserting that she only objected because Ki-tae’s mother was so rude and whoops, there she is, come to visit.
The two women talk alone, and Ki-tae’s mom apologizes for her previous behavior. Jang-mi’s mom says she’s being much more cautious about Jang-mi and Ki-tae’s engagement this time, but Ki-tae’s mom says she’s decided to do the opposite and keep out of it. She says she wants their marriage to be theirs alone, but Jang-mi’s mother asks if she won’t ask Jang-mi to cook for rituals and such.
Ki-tae’s mother promises she won’t, since she’s getting a divorce. She grins that she got the house, which impresses Jang-mi’s mom. Jang-mi’s mom congratulates her and asks her secret, and the two women laugh together for the first time. These two are going to be besties, aren’t they?
A few months later, a now-showing Hyun-hee watches a new chef cook in their restaurant, and Yeo-reum tells Jang-mi that this is his replacement. He says that he started this restaurant for her, and that he’s got lots of other types of food he’d like to cook, so he’s striking out on his own. He offers to sell her his recipes and bids her farewell, and in voiceover she says that this goodbye was the beginning of the wedding trouble.
Ki-tae’s parents have a glass of wine at a bar, where Dad tries to act pitiful without her but Mom calls him on his BS, saying she saw him pull his missing button off outside. HA. She tells him that she doesn’t regret their time together, but that doesn’t mean she was happy – she was doing her best to live with her choice to stay. She tells Dad to take responsibility for his love, and find fulfillment.
Mom turns to go but Dad grabs her arm, crying that he’s lost everything so what good is love? Ki-tae didn’t even invite him to the wedding. Mom shakes him off, saying that’s what Ki-tae wanted, but turns back to throw him a pity invite.
Ki-tae and Jang-mi enjoy a candlelit bubble bath together the night before their wedding. Jang-mi tells Ki-tae he looked like a wet rat the first time she saw him (from his date that threw water on him), but agrees that he looked so sexy that she threw the juice on him later just to see him all wet and sexy again. They reminisce over all the key points of their relationship, teasing and joking adorably.
Ki-tae suggests they remodel the bathroom after their honeymoon, saying it’s a bit small as he tries to scootch over to her side of the bathtub. Jang-mi says she likes the small tub, and they canoodle as she says in voiceover that at that point, they still trusted each other.
It’s the day of the wedding, and again we see Ki-tae and Jang-mi at the altar as she tells him they should just fold, and he agrees and stalks off. He tells the wedding coordinator to fold the umbrellas from the tables, even though he thinks it’s a bad idea since a storm is brewing. Jang-mi argues that the forecast predicted it would clear up, and the bride gets her way so the umbrellas come down.
Yeo-reum approaches them and grabs Ki-tae in a bear-hug when Ki-tae pouts that he only greeted Jang-mi. Yeo-reum escorts Jang-mi to her waiting room, and Ki-tae overhears him say something about wiring money and gets suspicious. He eavesdrops as they talk about how much money Jang-mi sent to Yeo-reum, but his mother drags him off and he doesn’t get to hear the rest of their conversation.
Se-ah comes to congratulate Jang-mi, who jokes that her mother loves her new breast but her dad loves it more, hee. She invites Se-ah to her bar, but Se-ah says she can’t drink for a while because her dream is coming true – she’s pregnant. Jang-mi’s face freezes in horror, and she can’t even smile for her wedding photos. Hyun-hee notices something’s wrong, and Jang-mi asks her to get Ki-tae for her.
Ki-tae greets the wedding guests (and gets glomped by an overly-enthusiastic Hoon-dong, cute) where he and his mother are grilled by the female family members over her divorce and his not inviting his father. Dad shows up and Mom admits to having invited him, but Hyun-hee comes to get Ki-tae before he can address any of this.
An upset Jang-mi asks if Ki-tae gave Se-ah a baby, but he’s too offended by the question to even answer. He counters by asking why she gave Yeo-reum money, and she says it’s business and takes offense in turn at his suspicion. The wedding coordinator comes to get them since Hoon-dong has been calling the groom down the aisle for several minutes, but Jang-mi cries that she can’t get married feeling this way.
The Angriest Groom Ever stomps down the aisle, and Jang-mi doesn’t look much happier as her father escorts her to him. Ki-tae refuses to look at her which makes things worse, so that when it’s time for Ki-tae to take over from her father, she refuses to take his arm. In front of everyone, Jang-mi demands to know if Ki-tae’s hiding anything from her.
He declares that he isn’t, and that she only has to look for herself. They (and every single wedding guest) look to where Se-ah is sitting, looking very cuddly with the 3D technology sales rep on her arm. Ha!
Absolved of guilt, Ki-tae asks what Jang-mi is hiding, and she tells him she only paid Yeo-reum for his part of the bar since he’s leaving. The busybody Gong ladies, who have been complaining about everything, now take offense that the family’s only heir is marrying a bar owner. Jang-mi’s mom hollers at them, “What’s wrong with a bar?!” Hyun-hee stands to defend her friend, which is the first Hoon-dong’s mother has heard of her involvement in the bar, and soon the entire wedding has been taken over by fights and bickering.
Just when they thought it couldn’t get any worse, the sky opens up and it starts to pour. All of the wedding guests run for cover, leaving Ki-tae and Jang-mi to stand in the rain at the altar all alone. Jang-mi says in voiceover that in life, the worst things happen during the best times, but you can get through life because the best things also come with the worst.
Soaked and deserted by family and friends, Ki-tae and Jang-mi just look at each other and begin to laugh. Jang-mi giggles at how “them” the wedding is, and Ki-tae agrees. They exchange wedding rings in the pouring rain, as Jang-mi thinks how marriage involves not just them, but both of their families. There will be lots of family issues, but marriage is worth it to be together.
They seal the deal with rainy kisses. Lots of them.
LOLLYPIP’S COMMENTS
Well, Jang-mi took the words right out of my mouth – their wedding was so perfectly “them!” It wouldn’t have felt right if it had gone off without a hitch, because their relationship was always full of fights and drama. But the fact that it was a total disaster, but they still came out the other side smiling and loving one another and accepting each other’s faults and all, was just the perfect wedding to top off this show.
In fact, my favorite thing about this drama, now that it’s over, is that everyone stayed fundamentally true to themselves. This goes for the parents as well as the leads, because none of them really changed dramatically; they only learned to accept themselves and take responsibility for their own happiness. Nobody had to have a personality transplant in order for someone to love them… yes they all changed some, but they just became better versions of themselves. Before, their quirks and hangups were holding them back, but they learned to take those qualities in themselves and use them in a positive way instead of letting the personality trait be in control.
The best example is Jang-mi’s tendency to think of others’ happiness before her own… at the beginning, she let this habit run her life to the extent that she never got what she wanted in favor of making sure the other person was happy. Instead of giving Jang-mi personal satisfaction, this just led to her being dismissed and overlooked by her friends and family. But now she’s learned to use that quality in herself to help others, like how she put her own discomfort aside time and again to reach out to Ki-tae’s mother, and help her find her own happiness.
Ki-tae arguably did the most changing during the course of the show, since he had to learn to let people into his life (physically and emotionally) to know that it’s worth putting yourself out there in order to gain love. Protecting yourself to the point that you shut out everyone and everything may be a safe way to live, but it’s not a happy way to live. He had to learn that while you may get hurt if you reach out to others, you also may gain immeasurable happiness, and that’s worth possibly experiencing some heartbreak in the process. But I believe that even though he did a lot of growing, Ki-tae still stayed essentially himself through the course of the show… he simply learned how to turn his protective instincts to the people he loves rather than keep it all for himself.
But the best thing about this entire show has always been the focus on family. None of us live in a vacuum and, good or bad, our families shape and define who we are. Jang-mi and Ki-tae were dysfunctional because their families were dysfunctional – but rather than fighting the future in-laws for control like so many drama characters, they actually drew those families in and worked on healing them. They both understood that the other’s family was part and parcel of who they are, and they each reached out to help the other’s family become healthy (even if that meant one couple splitting up). I adore how the families are still, and will always be, dysfunctional, because really aren’t all families in some way? But they learned how to love and accept one another in spite of that, and maybe even because of that.
It’s that acceptance of people and relationships for exactly who they are, and not trying to change them, that made Marriage Not Dating not only a fun and funny rom-com, but one with a heart and soul that will stick with us for a long time to come. The best dramas are ones that not only make you laugh and root for the characters, but make you feel something special, and I think I can confidently say that this show did that and did it well.
GIRLFRIDAY’S COMMENTS
What a fitting end to a series about marriage and dating—it doesn’t paint marriage as a fantasy, or the end-all-be-all of romance. It is in some ways the least romantic and most realistic of depictions since we have characters who run the gamut from happily wed, happily divorced, to some whose marriages resemble war buddies who are in it till the end because no one else would know their pain. What I like most about Ki-tae and Jang-mi’s final decision to be married is that they acknowledge that happily ever after is but a fantasy—marriages go bad, spouses cheat, love cools. But the theme of the episode is that despite all the odds, they’ll go in with eyes wide open and try anyway. That realism-optimism one-two punch just speaks to me, when they propose to each other to love and trust, even if there’s no such thing as forever.
This series is a standout among rom-coms for its fresh take on contemporary romance, its flawed characters who were allowed to remain flawed, and the lovely sense of humor that the writer and director shared—there was a cohesion in the writing and directing that was palpable, in that we were made to feel all of the right beats in all the right ways, which is actually rare. So often writing feels labored or directing diverges because they aren’t in sync, but here every song cue, every sound effect, every handhold, felt like it was taking us to a deliberate place, and that the writer-director team was always in control.
Granted, where we were taken wasn’t always roses. There were obvious missteps with supporting characters who were given central importance when we needed conflict, made to do crazy things to extend that conflict, and then shunted aside when they weren’t needed anymore. And as with most dramas that take on the contract dating/marriage premise, getting your characters out of the entanglement (or prolonging it, for that matter) proves to be a difficult endeavor. I loved the setup, but it started to drive me nuts the way we felt trapped there. The series was at its best early on, when the humor crackled and the couple was forced to act loving on the surface while antagonism brewed underneath.
The show’s signature cold open was another of those love-hate things for me—it began as a clever way to set us up for a twist on our expectations, and often it worked very well, using a pun or a song to lead our interpretation one way and then take a sharp turn in the episode proper. But once they started using it to misrepresent scenes altogether with footage that was a direct lie, it stopped being clever and felt manipulative; they lost meaning when I could only start counting them as fantasy sequences. It’s too bad, because had they remained the strict clever twists on expectation, they would’ve been the show’s crowning cap. I do like that the writer was clearly experimenting and pushing the boundaries of that device; the results just weren’t always in my wheelhouse. At least the finale went out on the kind of cold open I had loved early on.
Marriage Not Dating was a relative success for tvN (it reached a high of 4.2% during Episode 13 and mostly stayed within the 2% range which is good for cable), but it’s a far bigger success for Yeon Woo-jin and Han Groo, who showed fantastic range and now each have a leading role in a well-received drama under their belts. They were both so wonderfully funny and emotive, and considering the roles they’ve had in the past (oddly enough, they’ve both played cold-blooded killers, of all things), they displayed a totally different kind of warmth and accessibility that worked so well for the show. I love watching actors grow role by role, and these two had such a fantastically timed growth spurt in the same drama opposite one another. I can’t wait to see where they go from here.
I’d caution anyone against taking friendship, business, or ex-girl/boyfriend advice from this show (*shudders*), but I genuinely appreciated its take on family. I found the most touching thing in the finale to be Mom’s declaration that she’d take the house in the divorce and keep Grandma and Aunt—their bond had transcended all the traditional lines separating in-laws and blood relations, and they were just three women who loved each other as family. It underscored that the secondary loveline in the drama—between Jang-mi and her future mother-in-law—was something that changed Mom as a daughter-in-law as well. I loved that the familial thread ran through the show from beginning to end, and that despite the romance being the hook, family is what we end on. Accepting a person as they are is noteworthy; accepting their crazy-ass family as they are—now that’s love.

While I found the show entertaining. I didn't actually like a single one of the characters, and especially Gong Gi Tae. In that last episode his attempts to cheer her up or whatever it was he was doing when trying to force to her to eat and joke around with him and talk about marriage when she's trying to find her father to tell him her mother has cancer were appalling! And that thing with the letter - what gives him the right to open her mother's private letter, read the contents, steal it, and then refuse to let her daughter see it? I would have ripped him a new one right there.

Really? If I found out my mother had cancer, I'd love to have Gong Ki-tae there doing all those things for me :) I mean, making sure I eat, holding my hand, and then staying with my father and comforting him all night? I couldn't ask for anything more. Mostly because all that those things really show is that he's trying, that he's worried for me and that in itself is something lovely even if he doesn't know exactly how to convey it perfectly. Although, I personally think him going out of his way to mend the relationship between Jang-mi's parents is a pretty wonderful way to convey how much he cares for them, but that's just me :)

I agree. Ki-tae isn’t the most sensitive guy out there. He isn’t perfect that way. The fact that he did all those things is just his way of showing love and concern to the ones he care for. It may not be super romantic, but that just makes him, him.

Thank you DB for the recaps. I appreciated it so much. This one of the less-buzzed drama when it began but ended with a bang. I have to agree that the second leads (with the exception of Hoon Dong, he's such dork) didn't contribute as much as to the awesomeness of this series but the families made up for them esp GT's mom. Yay, the three women being together forget dad, girl power FTW.
And don't make me start with the wedding. I srsly LOL-ed, it is so Jang Mi and Gi Tae. If it ended with a simple wedding, it's not MND. The kiss at the end perfectly wraps up their story and now that's a kiss. Thank you tvN, you have been producing my all time fave dramas, this and QIHM.

I agree that the big weakness in this show were the second leads, Se Ah and YR. Neither one of these characters were written particularly well - their motives were fuzzy, and they hanged allegiances and directions without notice or reason.
But the acting was also very poor - both characters were played by idols, with little acting experience, and it showed. Both of them were more concerned with looking good than showing some real emotion, and neither of them were able to give any unspoken clues about their character. I got so sick of their plastic, enigmatic smiles. I understood the rest of the characters, I felt like they were real people, and then there was Ken and Barbie.

Best ever romcom! Was consistent from start to finish. Watching this became a bonding time with my wife who kept on nagging me to check whether the latest episode was already out.
This was also a great consolation after being disappointed so much with Doctor Stranger (not that they have any relation). Good directing, writing, and most of all, good actors. This drama did not have any pretensions at being life-like, or having any deep meaning. It never attempted to moralize or to stylize the scenes (again, unlike Doctor Stranger). It was just plain heartwarming, and hilarious and insightful towards the end.
Will never forget this nor will I forget the hugs and laughs we shared while watching.
Congratulations to all the production staff and the cast. Will look forward to another drama by the same actors.
Incidentally, am not Korean. But I am beginning to love Korean culture and actors. Have watched tons of Korean dramas. Thank you as well to all who do the subs. Looking forward to visit Korea with my wife one day.

MND was a good drama. I started off loving it but midway it lost its addictiveness to me and it wasn't as funny as it used to be. They took too long to have the OTP start dating and the angst and the two leads going around in circles aggravated me to no end. In spite of all of this I still liked this drama and when the leads did get together they were magic on screen. They have such wonderful chemistry, I hope they are able to reunite in another drama or movie someday.
The ending left me wanting more, idk I just didn't like the ending that much even though that kiss was amazing. They kept mentioning a plot twist so much that I thought it was going to be something epic, but all it was was whats her name getting knocked up by that one doctor guy. That was a let down. However, I loved that Gi Tae's mom found her happiness in the end. Her husband's family screwed her up so badly that it's understandable why she acts the way she does. She's the person I felt the most joy for in this episode and I'm so glad that her, Gi Tae's grandma & aunt, and Jang Mi's mom worked things out.
Overall I enjoyed this drama even if some of my love for it at the beginning wore off towards the end. It's still one of the best rom-coms of 2014 for me and I will put it on my repeat list for rainy days.

Probably the best thing for this ending was that not everyone got redeems in some unreasonable way..dad got what was deserving for him in losing his house and family while kt mom got wat she was deserving to receive all those years of being a slave to the family..no justification for the bad and rightfully so

Thank you Lollypip and girlfriday for the great and heartfelt recaps. Love this series so much but wished we had more time to just savor the OST relationship for a little longer. As well as seeing Ki-tae's dad suffer a whole lot more. And by the way, what with Jang-Mi's mom, yikes!! What a whiny self centered woman! Ugh.

I really loved the OTP, but the scene that by far made me grin the most was the one where the 3 women collectively kicked dad to the curb.
On a totally different note, Yeon Woo Jin has officially switched from a reason for me NOT to watch a drama to a reason FOR me to watch a drama. I didn't think he had it in him. Really really.

Thank you guys so much for the great recaps and insight you've provided and to all the commenters who left such great comments about the show as well. You two said what I wanted to say and more so much better than I ever could have, especially your last lign here, girlfriday, ha. I'm going to miss this show so much, especially the lead couple. They had so many adorable, sweet, wonderful and heartfelt moments in the last few episodes and it was a joy to witness them grow as people and as a couple. The actors did a fabulous job with these roles and they've definitely put those two on the map for me.
And because I didn't get to comment on it in the last recap, I still love, love, LOVE the moment between Kitae and his mother on the phone and the ones here between KiTae's mom, aunt and halmoni. I love how much this show emphasised the importance of family. It did a tremendous job of showcasing that even if they're dysfunctional and you're not close to them - your family still shapes you into who you are in a big way. It was wonderful seeing the love between the women in KiTae's family and seeing his father get his comeuppance and Mom get her fire back. Yes! I was waiting for that.
Just like how JangMi's parents made a scene at the hospital while making up - seeing that made me realize that she got her "scene-making" ways from them.
I also loved the realism in their decision to get married. They know firsthand just how badly marriages can go but even so, they're still willing to give it a try and try their best to love and support each other despite whatever twists life may throw at them.
I also loved the cleverness in the writing, the crazy sound effects, the awesome ost and the cute effects on screen. This really was an interesting, unique, heartwarming, FUNNY show and I'm going to miss it so much.

When this drama started I forgot about it and all the news that were posted here. I was just checking viki and it appeared, I read the description and watched episode 1.
16 episodes later Im so happy with this couple, Im going to miss them. This drama made me laugh, even cry a little and made me care for many of the characters. Ki-tae and Jang-mi are so good and so cute together, and I only can agree, the family aspect in this drama is one of its strongest angles.
Maybe is not a perfect drama but the crazy second lead and the flaws here and there never made me abandon it, because I was so in love with the good stuff that I could pass through that.
Thank you for the recaps LollyPip and girlfriday!

I still can't believe that this drama is over. I'm so going to miss it. Been playing the OSTs over and over again.
Comgratulations to Yeon Woo Jin and Han Groo! It's my first time seeing Han Groo act and I'm even surprised because she's so young! Her acting is on point and she's so good at comedy. Yeon Woo Jin's characters are so scary and he was a killer in Arang but the first time I saw him was in Ojakgyo Brothers and from then on, I knew he'd do well in a rom com.
I admit that this drama kinda bored me halfway through it and I actually stopped watching. I had to catch up on 4 episodes at once. It's the 2nd leads. I love Sunhwa and Jinwoon but omg their characters are so annoying. Then the bestfriend was just annoying too.
Still, I enjoyed the drama and it was a fun watch among all the dramas airing now. Gi Tae's "I know that there's no such thing as love that last forever. Despite that, I want to try loving you forever." Kyaaaaaaa /dead
Thank you so much girlfriday and Lollypip!!! You are awesome!!

I’m truly going to miss you, show T.T like seriously, no kidding. What am I gonna do on Sat/ Sun nights T.T hahaha okay I need to get a life -_-
So far, this is one of the few dramas I’ve watched that managed to draw me in from the start to the end. Usually, I get bored half way through and find myself FF all the annoying and useless bits. But I thoroughly enjoyed each and every episode of this one! even the ones with Se-ah and Yeo-reum cockblocking the leads. I mean, they are pretty annoying at times. But somehow I get the satisfaction of seeing the leads jealous of seeing one another with their own respective cockblocker hahaha. nonetheless, the seconds leads were still bearable imo. If we were to compare, there are definitely many more worse second leads out there.
The one thing I truly appreciate about the show is how it works so well to build up relationships so realistically, whether it is between a mother and son, mother and daughter-in-law, husband and wife etc. .
The last episode wrapped up things pretty nicely. So I’m quite satisfied and pleased about that. Loved the scene between grandma, aunt and mom. How cute! Crying and hugging each other, leaving cheating dad gobsmacked whilst they celebrate living together hahaha. Loved how Ki-tae’s mom stands up for Jang-Mi at the wedding by telling the in-laws that dad’s stupid gf can now do those duties she used to do, and definitely not Jang-mi! and the leads! that kiss at the end.. dayum. Seriously, those two are amazing. Yeon Woo Jin is so damn charming in the show, so much so that I wanna get a Ki-tae myself. A girl can dream. Heh. Han Groo did a great job as Jang-mi too. Those crazy eyes! Her movements are always so dramatic yet still somewhat natural at the same time. gotta love her man. Looking forward to see her future projects for sure.

Gaaah, is it over already?! TT_TT Even though I'm going to miss this show tons, I feel a little letdown with the wedding, and the oh so dramatic foreshadow of some epic distrust that didn't really happen. I am super glad however, that Gi Tae's mom was able to get the treatment she deserved all these years, and that Gi Tae's Dad didn't get a free for all happy ending just because he was the main character's father. I also feel like the Hoon Dong and Hyun Hee line could have been fleshed out a little more, the whole shotgun wedding/suddenly I like you/omgosh soooo typical of my wife/ thing was really sudden and a little hard to take in. Same with Jang Mi's parents, I kind of wanted them to have a chance to lay down all their grievances (especially Jang Mi's mom) because I feel as though the reunion will be temporarily. Anyhoo, that's some of my thoughts. All in all, a great show, I hope that tvN continues to produce awesome shows like this :)

Such a satisfying ending to a solid drama. I have to admit the earlier episodes were my favourite, it went flat in the middle for me but the ending was done nicely. I cried when the three ladies cried when grandma finally let go of her daughter in law and cried again when mum offered to live with the other 2 ladies and left dad to go eat crap for all they cared.. Sooo Good.

Thanks Lollypip and Girlfriday for the awesome recaps.
And yay for a show that uses more than the main leads in an effective way. I still wouldn't say all characters were likable or well-developed and used as in my other favorite show of the season, High School King of Savvy. I liked the portrayal of the leads and their families best here - including grandma, aunt, even sleazy dad and his mistress. Hoon-dong was funny once you get past the first few episodes where he was quite repulsive - and he did get his comeuppance in the shape of his wife (insert evil grin here). His wife and mother I didn’t much care for. Se-ah and Yeo-rum I cared for even less except for during the beach escapade. I thought at that point they might have an interesting friendship between all of them but after that unfortunately things went back to square one. It might be the writing, the acting or a combination of both but they have not added anything aside from being plot devices. Putting that weakness aside there are many things I loved about the show.
- Loved to watch the development of not only Ki-tae and Jang-mi's relationship but also Jang-mi and omoni's. Ki-tae's silent reconciliation with his mom over the phone was awesome.
- Loved the douchebag of a husband getting his comeuppance losing his home and family to the wife he undervalued and who deserves them so much. Loved that he understood her value too late and there was no turning back.
- Loved that omoni decided to live with halmoni and aunt who finally supported her all the way against that sleazebag.
- Also loved the reversal between the parents' relationships. The couple who seemed like the perfect family ended up divorcing while the ones who were always fighting ended up together because they actually loved each other in their own crazy way.
- Loved that the show never lost its humor.
- Back to our leading couple: Thanks TVN for giving us a realistic relationship of 30 somethings in which people really kiss, sleep together and have romantic moments in a bathtub!
- Loved how the cold open turned out!
- Loved that like the wedding in Savvy, we had another wedding very much fitting with the couple.
Lastly, for those who may miss watching Yeon Woo Jin Last night I watched episode 1 of Kara’s Secret Love, Missing You. It was short, cute and touching.

What a fitting end to a wonderful, hilarious, and heartfelt show. It had it's missteps here and there, but, all in all, it did everything I wanted it to and then some. As of now, it's my favorite rom-com of 2014. Any drama that puts a smile on your face and makes your heart feel full just thinking about it is an amazing drama in my book.
I adore Yeon Woo-jin and Han Groo so much and this was the perfect drama to showcase just how far they've come in just a few years time. I'm so attached to them and their characters that it's actually hard to see them separate, but I'm glad that it was them that got to be each other's partner in their first leading roles because they really play off each other so fantastically. I can't wait to see where they go from here!
That ending for Gong Ki-tae and Joo Jang-mi was just SO THEM. And I loooooooved it. So much. What a perfect wedding hahaha! I do have to agree with Jang-mi the Yeon Woo-jin looks very sexy all wet (in fact, I noticed that in the very first episode too, lol) and theres something so hot about the way he wipes his face before grabbing her for a kiss. And if that wasn't enough, the way he smiled at her before going in for more!
But what I loved most was the way he proposed! There's no way of knowing what obstacles and rough times they'll have to go through, so it's lovely the way he declared that despite that, he has faith that the good times with her will make what ever roadblocks they face in the future worth it. And then the end just drove in that idea that even if they're making a scene at their own wedding, at least they're facing the issues they face head on and get back to smiling and laughing in no time :)
Honestly, I usually write so much more and I feel like there's a lot more I want to say, but I'm actually in the middle of rewatching the drama haha, and writing about is making me want to return to watching it LOL. So. Perhaps, I'll return later and write more :)

Such a big fan of both leads and it was so refreshing to see a mother-in-law who was not pure evil just to supply a drama with a stock villain.
Very rarely do I love a series all the way through but this definitely ranks up there as a show that's perfect to binge-watch on a rainy day.
It's too bad that the guests did not get to hear their vows, but one of the sweetest parts about this episode is that the audience got to hear those vows during the second proposal when Ki Tae promised to do his best to love her forever and Jang Mi promised to trust him. Their affection for each other is real and palpable and not just for show.
And of course, thanks for the recaps!

Cutting this into two since my comment is too long(!). Sigh, the episode I hate commenting on most is the last. Because it just means I gotta accept that the end is here. But oh well... what needs to be done, needs to be done =P
I loved this show; 1-16. I didn't for a moment think it lowered its level and even if I started seeing it late, I totally feel the withdrawals. This last episode is my favourite I think, mostly because the family ties are so well addressed rather than sugar coated. I loved that Jang-mi's parents aren't suddenly romantic and that Ki-tae's mom decided to live with the women who's been by her side through it all. I just see it happening in real life to these characters who seem so real and alive themselves. Everyone felt organic rather than puppets controlled by a master.
I really started hating Se-ah somewhere in the middle, but I'm glad she was redeemed quickly. While I know a majority of you guys felt her character changed too abruptly, I think her main personality remained the same. She was still controlling but maybe focused on another target - first it was to get Ki-tae back, then it was to make Ki-tae's life perfect. I'm glad she got her happy ending even if I really expected the father of the child to be Yeo-rim.
As for Yeo-rim, I was really sad he left the restaurant because I felt his bond with both Jang-mi and Ki-tae was way more powerful than some temporary jealousy. But in a drama that focuses on characters being realistic, its good that he's moving on because eventually things happen, people change as well as circumstances.

Cont...
I also really loved the portrayal of friendship and loyalty here. It's actually very understated and sometimes ignored with many other things happening, but it's one of my favourite aspects. Hoon-dong/Ki-tae, Hoon-dong/Jang-mi, Jang-mi/Hyun-hee, Yeo-rim/Jang-mi, Yeo-rim/Ki-tae... so many great friendships. They all looked out for each other, were there when the other person needed a shoulder. Everyone has a different connection and they aren't bonded as a group but more so individually. It's just so awesome.
And finally Ki-tae and Jang-mi. I feel like I've said everything I wanted to about how great they are together and as individuals. But I can probably go on forever. Instead, I'll just say the reason I love them so much is because Yeon Woo-jin and Han Groo are just so good at portraying them. Their chemistry was intense yet warm, blazing yet comfortable, easy yet charming. Both are ridiculously talented and I expect great things from them in the future. I hope they get a chance to be main leads in network channels and take on bigger challenges. Definitely the breakout stars of the year for me. I've never seen them in anything before and I'm just so mighty impressed.
I can probably carry on, but I'll stop lol. I love this show and I hope that those who haven't seen it yet will give it a try. It would be unfortunate to miss out on MND because its the best rom-com I've seen in years - that includes YFAS. I'll miss it, but endings like these make me feel like they all exist in the world I live, just that maybe I won't get to see them onscreen anymore. That makes me feel better actually, which in turn makes me feel delusional LOL.

Just a few observations:
Han Groo is awesome!
TvN seems to really like wedding scenes in their dramas this year.
I just realized that Han Groo, Sun Hwa and So Hee are all in their very early 20's. They seemed so mature in this drama. I was surprised to find out that there was an 8 year age gap between HG and YWJ.
Jin Woon needs to work on his acting. He needs to loosen up and act more natural.
There is nothing more intimidating than a flock of meddling ahjummas.
Good show with Great OTP and OST!
Thanks for the recap ladies!

I can't help but wonder how it feels for Yeon Woo-jin and Han Groo to go from having so much skinship with one another while shooting the drama (and, as we know, the real time far exceeds the reel time) to none (presumably) after the drama wrapped. Their pheremones must feel confused!
I'm excited for both of the leads and enjoyed them each immensely in this, but I've got to give extra props to Han Groo for being such a natural at the physical comedy. Anyway, they made a delightful OTP that I shall remember fondly for a long time.
I super loved that Mom, Grandma, and Aunt were equally thrilled about staying together and giving Dirtbag the boot. Especially in the context of Korean family values. I would've liked to have seen Jang Mi and Ki Tae's Mom enjoying a newfound bond with one another on this ep. (because I was even more invested in their relationship than in the OTP's, and just wanted that well-earned pay-off), but I'm satisfied knowing that they're ready to enjoy that bond now.
Thanks a mill for the recaps! And keep 'em coming, tvN~ you rock!

I agree that both leads really gave their best in their roles...and I'm a real fan of them now. Hopefully they will move on to bigger and better projects. Thing is I feel that cable sometimes used lesser known actors who doesn't command the same buzz but somehow produces better results. It's telling that a number of cable dramas are actually more entertaining than the ones on the main stations. It's a peculiar trend but as long as us viewers remain the beneficiaries....no complains here.

Man, those aunts of GiTaes are so damn annoying. They don't live with him (one apparently lives in the US), don't keep up with the family (I saw that look of surprise on their faces when Queen Mom told them their bro has a woman) and yet they place all these ridiculous expectations on KiTae because "he's the sole family heir" and on their sister-in-law (prepare for my dad's memorial while I wine and dine!!!!) when their own mother AND sister who are heavily involved in KiTae's life don't even give a damn shit and are telling them to shut up. There's a reason why you three were not invited, you know.

What a fun wedding. (Although, I would die if that happened to me.) Usually, guests wait until after they get some alcohol in their system before they create a scene at your wedding, but nope, this was all sober. Such is Jang Mi and Ki Tae's life. At least the busybody Gong ladies now know about Dad's infidelity. Would it have killed Se Ah to have added "with my boyfriend/fiance/husband" to her pregnancy news, or is vague just her thing? I was relieved Show didn't go down the cliche path of Jang Mi being pregnant when she threw up because I did not want a child to be a factor in his marriage proposal.
Ki Tae and Jang Mi will go down as my all-time favorite couple. Their bubble bath flashback reel starting from the time they met to the time he fell for her brings tears to my eyes. They belong together. I cannot express how much I adore all the cute facial expressions Ki Tae makes. No one does it like Yeon Woo Jin. I cannot think of any other actresses who could have embodied Jang Mi as well as Han Groo. Jang Mi was Han Groo, and Han Groo was Jang Mi. One of my favorite character traits of Jang Mi came in episode 4 where she couldn't bring herself to half-ass the cooking even though the point was to mess up the memorial. As Ki Tae pointed out, "Why are you working so hard? Just burn everything," but her morals stopped her from doing that, and I love that about her. Also loved how Ki Tae peeled all those chestnuts after saying he wouldn't do it. They both say they won't do it but do it anyways. Very happy to hear Marriage Not Dating scored good ratings because Han Groo and Yeon Woo Jin deserve all the recognition. Jang Mi and Ki Tae were so realistic even while everyone else around them was unrealistic. This was such an unexpectedly heartfelt drama that I will miss. Thank you for recapping it, girlfriday and LollyPip!

Han Groo was a guest on an old episode of Strong Heart where she revealed she debuted at 4 years old and talked about her boss Joo Young Hoon. Coincidentally, Han SunHwa (Kang Se Ah) was in the same episode. If anyone is interested, you can watch Strong Heart Episodes 5 and 6 on DramaFever.

Thank you for the recaps. It was what started me watching. And what a waste it would have been if I had missed it.
What a breathe of fresh air. I totally love how messy, loud and chaotic the wedding scene was. It ended the way it started- everyone being a drama queen.
Love the stormy sky backdrop with the whole wedding tableau. Plus I've spent basically the whole drama admiring Han Groo's fantastic legs. Muscular and toned. And no stilettos in sight.

Agajdkslldnsnahajjsjd this is def the best romcom of 2014. It sits as my second favorite forever and this drama totally deserves a number one spot if only i wasnt so fond of my fangirling busan high schooler.
I wanna thank all recappers and regular commenters (i remember lessonlearn, chandler, harmonyfb, kim yoomi amongst some). You guys made it so fun watching it and i like that even tho there are differing opinions theres never a comment war here. DB jjang!
This drama seriously made me wanna follow korean dramas again. Ive been watching since full house days but i got so bored lately because shows are trying to be cool and different but this show, using the very same trope that got me hooked ten years ago, managed to end refreshingly.
Its weird how i dont feel the need to protest about otp getting together too long. I feel like they were just learning to see each other better with one wall falling after another as time passes. I even appreciate that it took them forever to acknowledge their feelings despite gitae actually falling for jangmi in like ep4. Its a very mature thing to portray that a relationship takes so long to happen.
All in all, i now have an ideal relationship type thanks to this drama. I actually made lunch for my mother after gitae phone scene in ep

wow! i actually disagree with GF regarding the best part of the show. i like the second half as i like the beginning, if not more. just as i've said in ep 15 recap... the later part of the show reveals how our lives may seem shallow and flat on someone else's eyes when actually things are boiling behind the curtain. and i really dont mind the second leads that much. it did bother me but some other commenters shared their POVs and now i can see that the second leads are pretty developed too (just maybe they were acted by less skilled actors hence the "err what" feeling we're getting).
hmm... i guess people really experience different things watching the same drama (GF gave MGIAG a 10, which was a mere 7 despite my seunggi-loving heart and soul).
thanks for still writing such great recaps despite your annoyance with the drama! always enjoy DB recaps the best ^^

Thank you for your recap of one of my favorite shows of the summer. My daughter asked me what show to watch. I told her Marriage Not Dating because it's not your usual boy meets girl plot. Also, I told her that Han Groo looks like my cousin when she was young so she said she would definitely check it out.
Anyway, sad to see it come to an end. I enjoyed the beginning parts, middle dragged on with the secondary characters I didn't care about, but ending was quite different and refreshing.
I'm especially glad that Ki Tae's mom finally had enough of Mr. Jerkface and asked for a divorce, the house, and told him to hit the road! I'm also liked it when the Grandma and Aunt commiserated with Ki Tae's mom and not the dad because they knew how much hurt and suffering she endured over the years.
Their wedding was a completed disaster, but that is the way life is... S..T happens. Loved it..
Kudos to the acting ability of Yeon Woo Jin and Han Groo. They made the"Perfect Couple" for this funny, sometimes crazy and silly hi jinks of their two absolutely crazy families. What fun it was to watch this pair!

Bravo lollypip and girlfriday. Awesome recap and comments for the series.
I am still battling the tears as this show has come to an end and also the family relationships it has explored and unraveled.
Most touching moment - ki-tae mom accepting in laws and friends and wanting to continue living with them.
Looking forward to watching more of our leads future work.

Appreciate your comments and insights LOllypip and GF. I always love your recaps.
I am very very very sad and I am now having withdrawals that this show has ended. I have watched eps 16 more than 5x already and has not gotten over it yet! :(
Anyway, congratulations to all the people behind this great show. this will be on top of my list of my fave romcom. I am now an instant fan of YWJ and HG, (been watching all their previous projects) Hope to see them again in their future projects as awesome as this.!
One thing that hits me on this series is to appreciate all my loved ones for all their kinkiness, messiness and all their disorders since I for one is one....
I loved this show so much, love all the relationships, friendships, mother-son, mother-daughter, mother in law-daugther in law...
I just loved the scene of KT and his mom on the phone...it dawned on me that, your mom is your greatest ally and the person that loves you the most....
So loved the cuteness and sweetness overload of our OTP and that passionate kiss at the end, that nailed it so beautifully!
Congratulations!
I am about to watch ep16 again the 6th time :)

she is one of the few kdrama mothers that actually had a backstory develop into how and why she did all she did..if they had kept her as who she was i would of appreciated it as well since we finally knew where she was coming from..too many dramas like secret garden, heir, boys over flowers where they are jus greedy and nothing more..we saw where kt mom came from which was a refreshing take on how people arent who they seem they are..being able to hate and love her all within a series was a first for me..

It's finally over.~~ I'm both happy and sad. Nevertheless, this will be one of my favorites of all time. There are just those dramas that you'd love to watch again and again. I'm sure I'd keep watching and rewinding my favorite scenes. I am now officially in love with Gong Gi Tae and Yeon Woo Jin. (swoons as he pouts and smiles) :) The perfectly imperfect guy who was transformed into the sweetest boyfriend/husband. Jang Mi is the epitome of flawed but gorgeous. The ending was perfect and symbolic. Love and Marriage is not about the absence of rain but about holding and loving each other amidst the storm. YWJ and HG were perfect for their characters. I hope I see them again in a drama.....love love love them. *_*) I can now watch it again...no sleeping tonight. :)

I looooooved this drama! It's been a long time since I enjoyed a rom-com this much!
I'm just so happy that this show remained true to itself until the end. And that they weren't afraid to show the OTP kissing and touching like any normal couple (thanks cable!).
Other dramas should follow the example: spend 2 episodes wrapping up everything nicely instead of rushing your ending in just 5 to 10 minutes.
Show, you will be missed!

I think that in part, Marriage Not Dating was so enjoyable because the lead actors were easy to relate to, not just because of their flaws, but also because they looked like normal people. Yeon Woo Jin, though adorable, doesn't have the abs of an idol or male model, and Han Groo is cute in a very natural way.

Yaaay episode 16 is out! But noooo the drama is over! I really really liked Marriage Not Dating, in fact, I would consider this one of my favorite dramas ever. Off the top of my head if I were asked now to name dramas I love and would recommend to others, they would have to be Reply 1997, The King 2 Hearts, In Time With You (Taiwanese Drama), and this one right here. :) There are others that I like, too, of course, but I'd put these four above the others.
I can't pinpoint exactly what it is that makes MND memorable for me. I think it has something to do with how honest and realistic the story is and how relatable the characters are and the situations that they go through. Of course, it is largely due to how good the main leads are in portraying their roles.
This is the first drama I watched with Han Groo and I have to say I am loooving her A LOT! She makes the funniest, most ridiculous facial expressions and it's greatly part of the reason why Joo Jang Mi is such a flawed yet completely lovable character. I would say I personally don't find her to be typically pretty but she has something about her that makes her quite attractive. She also has really nice toned legs, LOL. I will be sure to watch out for her future projects because this girl can act. I was surprised to learn that she's a 1992-er. She comes off as more mature than her real age. Actually, all the 3 female leads here appeared much more mature than their real ages, which isn't a bad thing. :) Yeon Woo Jin, I've actually seen him in Arang before and I hated his character there so I was a bit hesitant to watch MNR because of that. Thank God I did, though, because I never would have discovered how good these two are. I loved Yeon Woo Jin's portrayal of Gi Tae. His dorky facial expressions + the funny sound effects in this drama = GOLD! (I loooved the cat meowing sound effects everytime Gi Tae and Jang Mi are about to do you-know-what stuff. Hahaha!) And of course, no one can play a K-drama mom better than Kim Hae Sook. She was awesome, too, in I Hear Your Voice (another drama I love at lot, which probably should be in my Top 5). I really liked mom's scenes in this last episode especially when she finally let go of that perfect-wife exterior and finally eased up. I'm happy she asked for the house and all three women teamed up to kick dad out, woohoo! I liked Grandma, Aunt, and Lee Hoon-Dong, too! Hoon Dong was quite annoying at the beginning but they quickly turned his character into one that you can't help but like despite his hopeless mama's boy syndrome. His interactions with Gi Tae, Jang Mi and his mom towards the latter parts of the show were some of the funniest bits in the show.
I will miss this drama a lot. I will miss it's simplicity, it's honesty, it's heart, it's perfect comedic timings, awesome OST, perfect leads, and realistic take on dating and marriage. Of course it had its flaws, too, and I admit there were some moments that weren't as strong...

And some directions taken with Se Ah, Hyun Hee and Han Yeo Rum that were quite 'eh?' but overall, this was a very good drama and one that I don't have much to complain about. What's better is that I didn't have a lot of expectations going into this but ended up taking a lot out of.
Wow, this is the longest comment I've made. Thank you everyone for the recaps and the fun discussions here on dramabeans! Here's to more good romcoms for the remaining months of 2014! :) I'm watching Discovery of Romance and My Secret Hotel now. Hopefully those two will be half as good, or better yet, be as good as MNR was! :D

omooo! my top of the mind dramas would be TK2H and R1997 too! i should check out that taiwanese drama then.
i think we have a type of dramas we like... these three share the same extension of relationship beyond the main couple. with TK2H we have jaeha's position as a king and his relationship with his mother, his sister, and eun shi kyung. while in reply1997 we have the ever supportive group of friends.

with you on 1997 and tk2h was also one of those dramas where i came in with low expectations but that show really surprise me..for in time with you i was more frustrated with the male lead..one of the few dramas where the good guy got the girl and the jerk lost out but having the male lead being so passive and weak against the female lead started irratating me that i didnt know if i wanted him with her anymore because she would jus run him over if they were to get together..but the whole story as a whole was really good..i have to say the best taiwanese drama i have ever watch was fated to love you(taiwain) it had the outrageous characters, pushovers, and then twisitng everything around..imo so much better with the story since everything click and the cliches werent as heavy..plus the accident scene was so much more heart wrenching and draining..one of the few times i was falling out so much from the emotions from the female lead..

Yes, I can see your point there. Li Da Ren was too spineless as a whole which got me frustrated at times. What I liked about the drama though were all the different elements that made it good - the friends, the parents, family members, the overall TvN feel, awesome soundtrack, takeaway lessons by the female lead at the end of each episode, common everyday yet fun dialogues and banters between the leagues, among others. I think a reason why I really liked it was because it reminded me a lot of Reply 1997. It's like a mature, older version of it. Plus I really liked the OST, haha. :))
You should check it out sometime, alcoholicbubbletea! Some parts may get dragging and frustrating though somewhere towards the latter half of the show but overall, I would say it's a pretty good drama. Simple storyline yet great fun, just like Reply 1997 and MnD. :)
