Lee Dong-wook becomes Iron Man
by girlfriday
Well that only took forever. We were gettin’ down to the wire here, and I started to fear that Joseon Gunman’s extension had to do with its follow-up drama’s drama. But KBS’s upcoming supernatural series Iron Man finally has its hero in Lee Dong-wook, who’s just barely coming off the set of his last drama Hotel King. Eh, I hear rest is overrated anyway.
He’s reportedly in final negotiations, and most stories call it a nearly done deal. Meanwhile leading lady Shin Se-kyung (When a Man Loves) has confirmed, which isn’t a huge surprise since she’s been attached to the project through multiple rounds of hero searches. The pairing actually seems best in this round, though I wouldn’t watch a drama for either actor — I like Lee Dong-wook and he can be good, but I don’t follow him from project to project, and well, I try to avoid things Shin Se-kyung does.
The drama comes from writer Kim Gyu-wan (Cinderella’s Sister, Piano) and PD Kim Yong-soo (Sword and Flower, Equator Man), and tells the story of a wealthy man with a prickly demeanor who suddenly develops a supernatural ability. It’s described as knives sprouting from his body, leaving him covered in scars. Well, if there’s one thing I know from watching Lee Dong-wook in dramas, it’s that he’ll look really good while showing us those scars. Repeatedly. In the shower.
Shin Se-kyung plays a meddlesome heroine who butts into the hero’s life and helps him become “a real person,” whatever the heck that means, and they fall in love as he learns to deal with his inner pain and his newfound… skill? Curse? Adamantium-laced skeleton? Your guess is as good as mine.
Iron Man follows Joseon Gunman and premieres September 10.

It's because there was a time when I was waiting so bad for Song Jae Rim's next project that I kinda uhm... hi-jacked a lot of casting news here on DB to relate it to Rim.

Nooooo!!! Why why??!!! He shouldn't accept the role. Love him but I dislike Shin Se-kyung. Her acting is so bleh and she doesn't give the vibe of active energy and passion in every role she played. She always looks so passive and lack of enthusiasm.... She is not a good actor, I dont feel her acting at all. Haiz, drama god is trickery!

How or why does she get cast in anything? "OK we need an actress who can internally express the emotions of the character but also has the skill NOT to show it. Yeah, that way we can keep the audience guessing."

Nevermind. Since "My Girl", Lee Dong Wook lost it, he can't pick a good drama to save his life. Wild Romance and Mandate of Heaven are the prooves. The only good drama he picked so far since MG was Scent of a Woman... I disappointed because I hoped this mess would never see the light of the day *le sigh*
I'll pass this drama.

I thought his 2008 drama "La Dolce Vita" (by the writer of "Flames of Desire," "Queen Insoo" and "Cruel Palace") was critically acclaimed. Haven't seen it for myself, though. Any thoughts on it?

Ah, I forgot he was in it! I heard about it but I don't like heavy melodrama so I passed this drama. Unfortunately, as far as I know, this drama was a flop. I believe it was because of the themes it used rather than the lack of quality since most of the heavy melodramas flop.

La Dolce Vita was a rating miss, but was critically acclaimed among lots of viewers international and domestic, as far as I know. I watched it too and was absolutely floored - it's solid. Not perfect, but solid and meaty. Of course others shone more than LDW but personally I think his best acting role is still this one so yeah, I'd say don't write his potential off if you haven't seen him in this one.

Cant agree more! La Dolce Vita has a very developed plot and great character depth, only downside is that the themes might be a little too dark and twisted. Excellent cast as well, the four leads did a superb job - especially the two veteran actors, and despite the occassional slips from LDW and PSY. I'll have to remind you that it is a melodrama though, so it wont be rainbows and unicorns.

Second that! Wild Romance was a delightful watch.
As for LDW as an actor, I just don't get all the raves heaped on him. Watching him in Hotel King, the description that comes to mind would be 'dour faced - stiff as a board'.
He performed much better in Wild Romance and 2005's My Girl.
Oh well, one man's meat is another man's poison I suppose!

I actually thought both Wild Romance and Mandate of Heaven were okay, in different ways!
Wild Romance was pretty underrated, but I thought it was a good drama--albeit with some missteps, i.e. crazy psycho lady taking over the second half of the show--that was a refreshing change from the usual tropey rom-com offerings.
I agree that Mandate of Heaven turned out somewhat disappointing, but from a choosing projects perspective, the premise and initial scripts were good so I can understand why he picked it. The drama was actually not that bad either, I actually still don't understand why LDW couldn't handle his character and why his romance with SJH was so lifeless considering how much adorable chemistry they have going on in real life (as evidenced by his guest stints on Running Man).

Wow really? I swear I thought they'd get someone much more low profile for the main lead since two actors already rejected the part.
And is it just me or it feels like the production has no idea what the heck they're doing. Besides the WTF premise, I'm more baffled at the contrast in actors they're courting. First it was Ji Sung, then Park Shin-yang - who is so very different from the former - and then they end up LDW? It feels like they don't even have an age range they prefer or a type of acting style. Or is it more, we should just get whoever is ready to board a sinking ship?
Anyway, I'm definitely gone because SSK confirmed. Still, I'm really looking forward to how this eventually goes down. If it's good... I be shocked for years.

Interested in how they will pull this off. It sounds like sci-fi and it's a genre I don't see Korea do too often.
I like Lee Dong Wook a lot and have enjoyed the bulk of dramas I've seen from him thus far. I'm not that into Hotel King, though, but that's more to do with the story. I'll give it a go. I also like Shin Se Kyung. It's the way she plays all those innocent characters with this "over-it" attitude since you know they're supposed to be saccharine. I know it's not intentional, but it honestly puts a smile on my face. She's not my favorite but I definitely don't hate her.

I feel like the drama is ruined by the lead actress already. Her acting was so flat in When a Man Loves. I thought I was the only one who thought about it but when I searched online almost everyone had the same comment. I remember one blog even stating that her acting was like that of the talking rock that you can see in museum (this is what her face expression looks like: https://mikepitts.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/hoa.jpg) credit to the owner/photographer. But yeah it's ridiculous how her facial expressions did not change. Its like she just had bitch resting face syndrome, it's a legit thing look it up on youtube. I hope her acting did or does improve however because I love LDW but I as much as I loved song seung hoon in a man loves, she still ended ruining the drama for me but for the good I guess because you were suppose to hate the main actress .. I think.

I like Lee Dong Wook but only in My Girl and Scent of the Woman. I think it had to do with his co-stars Lee Da Hae and Kim Sun Ah. Both females are good actresses. Although I didn't really like Hotel King (mostly because of the script and the direction).
But eh I'll passed on this. And yeah I agree the three male leads offer as been completely different.
Maybe he's trying to strike the iron while it's hot with being on Roommate and Hotel King?

I don't think I have ever seen her play a cheerful character. Plus she only ever has one look to me. You can't be cheerful if your only look is pouty. Mmmm. love, love, love lee dong wook...but lately his dramas are not as good as when he did scent of a woman.
this shin se kyung actress is rather emotionless in all her dramas...rather sullen looking in most and rarely does she smile as if she is enjoying her roles....
hotel king...i gave it a whole miss after about the 10th episode.....just because it was rather becoming so ridiculous with lee da hae and her crazy acting??
he need a strong actress next to him....
