Kolorful Palette: Mysterious [My Secret Hotel]
by Fanderay
As far as I’m concerned Queen In-hyun’s man and Nine: Nine Time travels were two of the most memorable dramas from the last couple years, so I was pretty excited to see tvN bringing back Yoo Inna and Lee Jin-wook this week, albeit in two different shows. It’s hard to say which one I like more at this point, but I can confidently say I’m loving them both.
I’m a fan of whodunits, especially when they’re a little atypical (The Usual Suspects, Memento, etc). A K-drama rom-com with a divorced wedding coordinator and architect as leads certainly doesn’t follow any formula I’ve seen, so I’m pretty sure I can file My Secret Hotel in the atypical category. It’s fun and fresh, and the storytelling style doesn’t serve us anything on a silver platter (which is just as it should be when it comes to mystery).
I’ve come to the conclusion that I really quite like Yoo Inna as an actress, although I think she is much stronger as a lead than she ever was as an antagonist. When I first saw her years ago I thought she seemed a bit vacant, but she’s either improved a lot or her talents weren’t showcased fully. I find her mannerisms very unique but natural, which gives her a certain onscreen charm, and she switches deftly between comic and serious moments while managing to sell both equally well.
Switching tones is something this drama does very well overall, and I think that’s a big part of why I’m enjoying it so much. One minute I’m laughing, the next I’m feeling genuinely sympathetic, and the next I’m glued to the screen trying to watch for any little detail that might unveil some mystery. I think the camera work and the music are a big part of why the transitions work so well, and I can just enjoy the ride without feeling like I’m being jolted around between genres.
I love that the murder isn’t the only mystery on this show, and even the past romance between our two leads has me curious. I drew this pretty scene from their wedding because it was a gorgeous flashback and I liked getting a little glimpse of how Sang-hyo and Hae-young were together, but there’s so much else I want to know about them. When Hae-young left her behind on the road after they fought in this episode, she complained to herself about how long she waited for him. When he returned to find her later he commented that of course she wouldn’t wait. Obviously there was a miscommunication of epic proportions in their past, but that’s all the information we’ve been given. We don’t even know why they had an impromptu Vegas wedding in the first place, never mind why they separated. Even though I want to know everything, I hope this drama continues to tease us a bit more and makes us guess. The more mystery the better!
This drama has also pleasantly surprised me in some little ways. For example, instead of hating each other, it seems that both leads have already acknowledged that they have leftover feelings for one other. Doesn’t that usually take 10 episodes? Sang-hyo also already told her boss about being divorced, which is an honesty we rarely get to see. Writers usually save that sort of thing for future misunderstandings and forced drama. so it’s nice to see them not using lazy tactics, and Sang-hyo’s character is only more likable as a result.
As far as the murder mystery goes, I hope it’s complicated and full of red herrings that keep our heads spinning. I like an intricate web, so hopefully this is something that plays out slowly over the course of the drama. Between murders from the past, pickpockets, shady employees and crazy exes, I’m feeling very optimistic.

I'm really intrigued by this drama too, and am enjoying all the different mysteries - it's fascinating to me that there are so many, not just the main murder!
And I loved the scene you chose to draw. It was such a powerful moment - revealing the flashback at the exact moment he's walking down the aisle, paralleling their own wedding perfectly. The leads are acting the hell out of these roles already, and we're only two episodes in! I'm so excited to see where it goes from here. So far they've been doing a fantastic job at blending the genres, so I can't wait to see what they reveal next!!

Love the artwork and the drama as well. I first saw Yoo Inna in Secret Garden and she made me laugh out loud in the brief scene with Hyun Bin where he unfired her. I've been a fan ever since, and thought she did a fine job with a difficult part in YFAS.

Girl, Lee Jin Wook is not the lead actor but rather its Jin Yi Han. I'm really loving his performance here so I think we should need to attribute it to the correct actor.

She was referring to The Three Musketeers, not My Secret Hotel. She even said they were in two different shows. . .

I think Girl was referring to Lee Jin Wook in 3 Musketeers (see her writing "albeit in 2 different shows").

I think I have to wait this one out, I'll just keep checking the recap 'coz I checked the writer for this drama and her last kdrama was Lie To Me, and that was an epic fail for me. But still hoping for the best, I really like Yoon Inna

Interestingly (and sadly) enough, the writer passed away from cancer, so she only wrote the first four episodes, although she had the whole thing plotted in advance to give to her replacement. And having seen the first two episodes, all I can say in her defense is they were great, and more than enough to make up for the train wreck that was Lie to Me.
I'd give it a go... it's too harsh to judge a writer by one bad drama anyway. If Big or Couple or Trouble had been the only Hong Sister dramas I ever watched, and I swore them off altogether, I would've missed some of my favorite dramas of all time!! Likewise, the writers of some of my favorite dramas have written duds too... Nobody's perfect in this industry.

The writer of Lie to Me was not the only one at fault there -- the clothes were a mess and actively worked against the actors.

So funny, I know LTM has a bad rep on here but I love it to pieces and everyone I know that sits down to watch 5 minutes of it with me gets sucked in and ends up loving it.
Even my older brothers (grown men with kids that watch mostly action movies) were getting sucked into it too and were suddenly asking questions and gasping at what was going on. I understand it's not a critical darling but it somehow got it's hold on me.

I have to say, I've never been much of a fan of Yoo Inna. Her character on My Love from the Stars was downright annoying. I honestly can't say if that's the fault of the writer or the actress. But it seems that people are enjoying her in this show. Might have to tune in.

I say definitely the writer's fault. She practically forgot about Yoo Se-mi towards the end of the drama when things started hot between our OTP. I've been a fan of Yoo Inna since I first saw her in the Greatest Love, she manages to have a good chemistry with everyone of her co-stars, I can't wait till she gets a lead role on a big 3 station. And she's beautiful to boot.

Yoo In-Na definitely has to be the lead to be likeable or even memorable. She's never won me over as the second lead unfortunately. I don't think it's her fault totally--perhaps she just chose the wrong dramas to take the second lead role and those dramas have drawn the second female too broadly (except for Best Love--she was okay there). She was absolutely awesome as the lead in QIHM and I see the same spark (so far) here so I'm hopeful!

Hey, I am all for the Agatha Christie style where it all only falls together and makes sense at the end. I love all kinds of mysteries.
The little outdoor church wedding with flowers in hair was just fairy tale perfect to see. So lovely.

Nice artwork and lovely write up on Yoo In-Na.
Big fan of The Usual Suspects and Memento. Hopefully the mystery and romance in My Secret Hotel lives up to hype from its promos since the cast has great potential.

I've never been a huge fan of Yoo In Na, probably because the only drama I've seen with her in a memorable role for me was Queen In Hyun's Man and I seem to be the minority who didn't love that drama.
My Secret Hotel though - it's blowing my socks off and it's only three episodes in! I admittedly only tried it because of Jin Yi Han who I was majorly impressed with in Empress Ki but I'm really glad I did! Not only did Yoo In Na earn some love from me, Nam Goong Min is killing me with his looks - to be honest, he looks like Song Joong Ki would if Joong Ki aged visibly. It's hard for me to find a drama that holds my interest but so far, this one is a winner.

Okay, Yoo In Na and TvN so far is the best actor-tv station pairing. After Queen In Hyun and now My Secret Hotel? I hope more exciting projects/dramas of Yoo In Na/TvN to come in the future. I will surely be waiting and watching!
And... Nam Goong Min! Ooh Wow! He is the mystery of this drama, I bet my money on him!
