Joo Sang-wook courted for Birth of a Beauty
by awcoconuts
It seems a number of upcoming weekend dramas are basing their plots on box office successes. We just heard about MBC’s new drama, Legendary Witch, the plot of which sounds suspiciously like Gift of Room 7, albeit with a female cast. Now we’ve got SBS joining in on the action with Birth of a Beauty (a working title), a show about a woman whose life is transformed after she sheds some weight — a story reminiscent of 200 Pound Beauty, the popular 2006 comedy movie starring Kim Ah-joong.
Joo Sang-wook (Sly and Single Again, Good Doctor) has received an offer for the male lead and is positively considering it. While there hasn’t been any other news on his character or the plot, several actresses are said to be interested in the female lead, which could be a career-defining role, a la Kim Sam-soon or Bridget Jones.
Birth of a Beauty will be directed by Lee Chang-min (My Love Madame Butterfly, Bride of the Sun) and will be written by Yoon Young-mi, who previously collaborated with PD Lee on Bride of the Sun. The show will air in November on SBS, after Endless Love concludes.

I think that role would suit him perfectly! And I hope they'll strive for some depth on that drama, instead of making plastic surgery look like the magic cure for all female problems.
Im Joo Eun would be a great choice for the heroine. And she's searching for her next project... which I'm hoping is a lead role.
PS: I'm also wondering if Han Groo and Yeon Woo Jin have any projects lined up after MND.

As much as I love Han Groo and Im Joo Eun, I think this role should be played by an older actress. Can't think of any now but there are enough of them out there.

Maybe you're right...
Han Groo is 22 years old and Im Joo Eun is 26.
I imagine the heroine as 26 to 32 years old.
Older actresses... Son Ye Jin (32), Song Hye Kyo (32), Shin Min Ah (30)?

Son Ye-jin, Song Hye-kyo and Shin Mina are all way too A-list for most dramas, forget weekend dramas. They've each made at most 2 dramas in the last 6 years, each of them.

Thought Im Joo Eun was younger, but then again 26 is quite young. 25 to 35 would be perfect, depends on the actress of course. Someone like YEH needs a breakthrough drama.
Those actresses prefer movies, I don't think you could attract them with a weekend drama...

PS: Kim Ah Joong was 24 years old when she did "200 Pounds Beauty". And Joo Jin Mo was 32 years old. An 8 year age gap.

Im Joo-eun is 26, which is not super-young. But she is incredibly talented and needs to be cast in a leading role worthy of her talent, so if this is it, I would like it. Plus her last couple of roles were on SBS, they really should consider her at least. It's a weekend drama so less pressure/need to find a 'star' than a weekday prime time slot.

It would be nice to use a "character" actress rather than a typical leading lady but I guess that wouldn't provide the necessary ratings.

My first thought was Kim Ok Bin, currently delivering a stunning lead performance in the exceptionally excellent Yu Na's Street. She would probably be considered a "character" actress in Dramas

After watching his Happy Together episode with other Good Doctor's cast members, it's really amazing to see how popular and in demand he became.
I was really touched when he talked about how he would take part time jobs when he didn't have any acting gigs and for more than 10 years. I know lots of actors must have lived like him but still, it's really impressive and at the end of the day, all his hard works paid off :)
I bet his mother is really really happy, hahah.

The news released last June If I don't mistake..Too bad there's no any site that translate that Korean article about this TEN, though the are many people waiting so baaaad for this dramaa :( :( . So thanks there's are someone in JSW's Soompi Forum who translate it. OCN said they need to prepare well for TEN3, so it needs some times. They will change the writer who was in TEN1.

I don't care much for Im Joo-eun but I really hope Han Groo doesn't do weekenders. I want her next project as a week show with one of the 85-89 guys. Plus JSW lacks charisma and chemistry with co-stars.
As for the drama, it does sound interesting although I hope they stick to around 20-ish episodes like Angel Eyes.

Seconded re: Han Groo - she has the chops to be a prime time leading lady and it's high time we got some good talent in that time slot that isn't Shin Se-kyung/Jin Se-yeon (both terrible actresses) or an idol.
(I only want prime time for Han Groo in terms of raising her profile, not because I think KBS/MBC/SBS shows are better than cable)

That's true he has never really hit the mark for me in the romantic lead. But he totally rocked it as the dark detective in TEN. I think his strength lays in characters like that. He's not meant to play the nice 오빠.

I'll watch it ONLY if they don't have her be too skinny--whoever winds up playing her. I think that's one of the big draws of "Samsoon." She wasn't a twig and she was still attractive.
(Not that any producer is asking me) but I don't mind an I'm-getting-healthier-so-I'll-lose-weight makeover. But I despise, oooh-I'm-3-pounds-over-normal-so-I'll-lose-50-then-I'll-really-be-hot anorexic.
I hope they let the "beauty" be curvy even after she drops the fat.

It would be more realistic if they can get a really curvy actress n lose some weights, and not wearing that fat suit thingy..

Honestly, I am put off by the very title of this drama which implies ("birth"!) that to be beautiful you must lose weight / must not be fat.
If they cast a skinny actress and put her in a fat-suit, count me out too because to me all this just sends the wrong message.

Yeah I am really curious about that too. Most of the young Korean actresses are too thin, I wonder if they can make a good actress gain wait for the role. Otherwise I am not interested in a fatsuit...

Ikr. Those actresses just prefer movies over tv dramas, doesn't make them any better than the other great actresses who like to act in (weekend)dramas.
The best of the A-Listers in Hollywood go from time to time (back) to television.

I want him to say yes to this one. A weekend drama means that I'm going to have more time to watch him. Love him before but love him much more after Sly and Single Again.
Hope this drama is aiming for a funny tone. He's totally adorable and hillarious when he's being silly and petty. Love that role more for him a cold aloof hero.

I hope as well that JSW say yes to this. JSW is actually good at romantic comedy, he becomes hotter and yummier when he plays silly and funny.
I think that needed chemistry with whoever the actress who will play the heroine will just comes out once they start filming.
Looking forward for a nice, good, heartwarming drama in November...

Joo Sang Wook's a hottie. If anyone doubts his comedic talent, go watch Sly & Single Again. Wonderful chemistry with Lee Min Jung. He does dark and serious characters as well as funny, hilarious characters so well. Mark of a great actor! Joo Sang Wook fighting!!
