High School King of Savvy: Episode 17 (Final)

We’re here! The final installment of our zippy double-life workplace romance gives us mostly plot to get us through the last leg, but it doesn’t discount the cute or the heart. Just when we start to question the validity of the choices made, we’re reminded of the true reason why we stuck with Savvy in the first place. It’s the characters and the authentic way that they made us care, love, laugh, and cry with them. And I’m happy to say that we’re given just what we needed to wrap up such a ridiculously fun and heartwarming story.

FINAL EPISODE RECAP

After the fight, Soo-young repeatedly checks her phone, waiting for Min-seok’s call. Yoo-ah notices and tells her sister to clear the air – she’s probably in the wrong because Min-seok isn’t one to get mad often. Taking the blame, Soo-young nods but sighs in frustration because it’s a little more complex in her mind.

Min-seok receives the call from Soo-young but ignores it. Dad asks why he isn’t picking up, and Min-seok replies that it’s not an important call. Mm-hmm.

The next morning, Min-seok and his friends eat at Tae-seok’s Chinese restaurant, which is notably empty. Min-seok wonders how this restaurant is still in business, as there are rarely ever customers. Tae-seok nonchalantly explains that his dad has a building in Gangnam or something, but Min-seok and Duk-hwan gasp at this revelation that their friend is rich.

The conversation transitions to Yoo-ah’s situation. Tae-seok explains that Yoo-ah’s mother recently closed her bungee jumping facility but has accumulated a large debt. As a result, Soo-young is taking out her down payment on her house to repay some of the debt. And Soo-young wasn’t able to attend Dad’s birthday dinner because her mother had caused a scene asking family for money. This is news to Min-seok, and he drops his head in solemn realization.

Min-seok offers to treat Soo-young out to dinner, and she settles for some expensive naengmyeon – well, expensive compared to their usual ddukbokki. Soo-young acts happy, but there’s still some tension as we see Min-seok forcing a smile throughout the meal. Afterwards, they walk the night streets with ice cream. Soo-young tries to lighten the mood, but Min-seok suddenly stops and addresses her in a more serious tone. He wants to go to Germany to live with his brother and Dad.

Soo-young asks what she should do… wait? But Min-seok goes on about how he heard about her situation and why she was absent for Dad’s birthday. “I never once thought that I was younger than you, but embarrassingly enough, I realized that I am younger. I’m eighteen. I’m selfish. School’s not that easy, and I don’t know what I’m doing for my future. The way I am now, I have nothing to offer. I can’t stand the person I am right now. I’m sorry.” With that, he asks for one last chance for skinship and kisses her on the forehead as a farewell gesture.

Min-seok walks away in tears, but he’s stopped by Soo-young, who asks him not to go. Not telling him about the bungee jump situation is her fault. “Even if you don’t do anything, having you by my side gives me strength. If the problem is school, I can help you. If it’s about your father being lonely, I’ll be your family. Let’s… let’s get married!”

Min-seok replies with a big “Huh?!” (exactly my response) and asks if she remembers that he’s a high-schooler. Soo-young nods and explains that she can’t think of any other option at this point. After a moment of ice cream eating silence, Min-seok agrees to her proposal and pulls her into a hug. They’re getting married.

When Soo-young returns home, her mother has some good news. The person acquiring the bungee jumping facility is buying it at a premium, and her mother was offered a job by her friend. With all this good news, Soo-young mentions that she should just get married. As a passing comment, Soo-young asks her mother what she thinks about younger men. Her mother immediately rejects the idea, reasoning that Soo-young needs someone older to take care of her clumsiness. Well, it’s a little too late now…

Min-seok tries to convince Dad, who rejects the idea as well. But Min-seok’s not giving up and throws a fit, asking Dad to meet Soo-young in person.

The next day at work, Sang-hee looks for Soo-young and happens to see the text on her phone from Min-seok: “The more I think about it, the more it seems like a dream… us getting married.” She jumps back in shock and looks to Soo-young for confirmation. She’s speechless, and the whole team seems understandably surprised.

Soo-young’s called into Team Leader Kim’s office (now Director Kim), and he starts to warn her about what she’s getting herself into. He realizes that she really does love him, so he changes his approach and so does the music. Taking the role of Min-seok’s guardian, Team Leader Kim tells her to love and understand him, even if he watches a lot of porn. He also really likes hamburgers and cola, so don’t get mad at him for eating too much fast food. Haha.

Soo-young asks him to scale down some of the affection since Min-seok is her man and walks out while Team Leader Kim still looks sad to see his baby bird fly away.

Next up to warn Soo-young are Sang-hee and Yoon-ju. They tell her to rethink the marriage. She’s marrying a kid in high school. Sang-hee tells her that marriage is three months of love, three years of fighting, and thirty years of patience. Marriage is not love, but a reality. Yoon-ju adds that if she marries, Soo-young becomes a guardian, not a wife. Oof. Soo-young imagines the scenario: going to a parent-teacher conference because of a fight. Except she’s addressed as Min-seok’s wife, not mother. Double oof.

Yoon-ju continues on with another point. Even if Min-seok does reach legal age, both Soo-young and Min-seok will age. Soo-young will be having a child in her thirties, and Min-seok will be in his early hot-blooded twenties. She begins to imagine another scenario, in which she’s taking care of her baby while Min-seok parties it up at the club.

Soo-young shakes herself back to reality and argues that Min-seok’s not that kind of person. Her coworkers shake their heads and tell her to think it through. Yoon-ju mentions that it may be better for Min-seok to go to Germany and figure out his life there. There are more opportunities and maybe that’s what’s best for him.

The last point echoes in Soo-young’s head as she waits to meet up with Min-seok. When he arrives, he seems super giddy about the whole marriage. But Soo-young grounds him as she voices her conflict. She doesn’t know if marriage is ideal at this point, as Min-seok could grow and find other opportunities abroad in Germany. Min-seok’s face falls, but he seems to understand her dilemma.

Soo-young drowns her uneasiness with some soju and heads back home. Her route is intercepted by Min-seok, who’s holding huge bag of popcorn.

Offering it to her, he says, “I can’t get you a ring, but I can get you what you like most. I’ve thought about what you said, and you’re right. I could do better things in Germany, and I could regret it if I married you now. But no matter what, I want to be with you. I don’t know if this is the right answer, but I want to be with Jung Soo-young until the very end.”

Min-seok gets down on one knee, offers the popcorn bag to Soo-young, and proposes. Just as he starts to doubt she’ll say yes, Soo-young accepts the bag and his proposal. She apologizes for giving him doubts, and he thanks her for saying yes.

Min-seok pulls her into a hug with the popcorn bag in between them. Then he leans in for a kiss, and the smoochies continue with the popcorn bag between them. It’s cute and sweet, exactly like our couple.

Dressed in hanbok, Soo-young goes to meet Dad. She puts her best foot forward and cuts the apples (badly) with special rabbit ears, but that doesn’t mitigate Dad’s shock when he finds out that Soo-young is ten years older. Min-seok doesn’t help much either, looking ecstatic just being there.

Afterwards, Min-seok and Soo-young meet up with Tae-seok and Duk-hwan to brainstorm ways to convince Soo-young’s mother. Tae-seok admits that he wouldn’t approve of this marriage himself but comes up with the genius idea to fool Soo-young’s mother. Just pretend you’re still the Chief Director! Duk-hwan praises him for having a tiny piece of a brain for once, but Min-seok scolds them, saying that he can’t commit fraud, especially with Soo-young’s mother.

Soo-young steps away for a moment, and Min-seok’s friends take the chance to pull his hair out of jealousy. With all the “bbuing bbuing” and “bbonga bbonga” that Min-seok gets to do with marriage, Tae-seok jokes that Min-seok’s going to have to get on that exercise grind.

Min-seok walks Soo-young home and assures her that he’ll be able to convince her mother to accept their marriage. He pumps out his chest with bravado, stating that he used to be ice hockey superstar Lee Min-seok. Their conversation is interrupted by Soo-young’s mother, who catches them red-handed. She addresses Min-seok as Chief Director and invites him inside.

Yoo-ah watches the whole scene with a smirk, as Min-seok goes along with his role-play. Soo-young’s mother sits down to ask Min-seok if he’s thinking of marriage, and he confidently states yes. Mom is overjoyed at his reply and starts to plan out the couple’s future. Meanwhile, Yoo-ah sits in the back giving them disapproving looks.

At school the next morning, Yoo-ah describes the situation to Duk-hwan and Tae-seok. They criticize Min-seok for going along with this fraud even though he refused to go to these extremes. The trio is interrupted by a smitten girl who offers chocolate to Tae-seok. She runs off in embarrassment, and Duk-hwan explains that the girl’s been stalking Tae-seok lately.

Yoo-ah tells him to date the girl, but Tae-seok asks Yoo-ah if it’s okay for him to date her. Yoo-ah gives him a very nonchalant approval, so he agrees to do so. But as Yoo-ah walks to class, she stops in realization. She bursts into the classroom and digs the chocolate out of Tae-seok’s pocket, warning him not to take anything from other girls.

She leaves the boys in confusion, but Duk-hwan notes that this seems like a confession. Tae-seok breaks into a smile while Duk-hwan throws a fit in lonely misery. One friend is getting married, and another just scored a girlfriend. He tries to ask a classmate out, but he’s immediately shut down. Aw, poor Duk-hwan.

At the office, the retail team practices their wedding congratulatory song (“Magic Castle”). Yoon-ju complains about the song choice, while Dae-han argues that this is the best song for the wedding. Assistant Park notes that this is the twelfth time the two have broken up, so he continues practicing with Sang-hee.

Soo-young enters the office and thanks the team for putting in the effort. Yoon-ju and Sang-hee commend her for her courage and show their support for her marriage.

She gets a call from Min-seok, who’s walking through the hallways. Soo-young’s mother also arrives at school to meet Yoo-ah’s teacher. When Min-seok walks outside, he unknowingly greets her, only to reach the realization right after. Soo-young’s mother turns to see the high schoolers: Min-seok, Yoo-ah, Duk-hwan, and Tae-seok. Mirroring Soo-young’ reveal, her mother drops her boxed drinks as it dawns on her that Min-seok is a mere high school student.

When Soo-young’s mother returns home, she packs her bags. Soo-young and Min-seok apologize on their knees, but she’s not having it. She’s already cancelled all the wedding arrangements, and there’s no way she’s going to approve.

Min-seok tries to meet Soo-young’s mother, waiting with flowers outside her home, but she throws them and a delivered fruit basket on the ground. Even when rain starts to pour down, Min-seok waits outside on his knees. He comes back again and again, and she rejects him every time.

Soo-young finally comes to retrieve Min-seok and tells him that her mother is too much. She calls her mother, determined to speak her mind. Just as she’s about to set things straight, her mother tells her that she’s in Seoul.

The couple heads back to Seoul, where Soo-young’s mother gives them a curt approval. She says that they’d better decide before she changes her mind, so both Soo-young and Min-seok blurt that they’re going to get married.

Yoo-ah watches everything with a smile but can’t seem to hide her surprise. She follows her mother into the room and asks her what changed her mind. Soo-young’s mother reveals that Tae-seok, Duk-hwan, and Dad have been calling nonstop with their testimonies, and even Team Leader Kim delivered a fruit basket. Seeing that Min-seok was able to form a loyal circle of friends and a support team at such a young age, she was able to change her mind.

Plus, when Min-seok was playing the Chief Director role, he rehired Soo-young so that she could have a stable position in the company. Even when Min-seok was playing the role, Soo-young’s mother thought about how nice he would be as her son-in-law. Yoo-ah gives her mother a hug and jokes that she should find a young man for herself.

Next thing we know, we’re at the wedding. It’s being held at none other than the community park, on the large field where drunk times and rehab exercises have happened (which sounds really wrong out of context, but it’s true). The guests are a hodgepodge of high-end executives and high-schoolers: the hockey teammates, Director Han and Director Nam, the retail team, and even Jin-woo.

The wedding is about to start, but the couple is nowhere in sight. Team Leader Kim frets about our missing couple while buffing his face with makeup, and Yoo-ah tries to get in contact with them. Team Leader Kim begins to ask the guests for their patience just as Min-seok and Soo-young arrive.

They stumble into the field and explain their delay as ring complications. They also tell Team Leader Kim to rush the wedding ceremony since they need to catch their train in ten minutes. HA. As usual, Team Leader Kim looks like he’s going to cry but goes along with the new plan.

The bride and groom speed walk down the aisle with the music in fast-forward to match their pace. They skip over everything, and it’s hilarious to see the parents stand up only to sit right back down and the retail team to passionately sing only three seconds of their whole song. Team Leader Kim tells the audience to pretend that everything – addressing the parents, the quick celebratory song – has happened and asks Director Han to officiate the wedding.

He speaks at a normal pace, but that’s too slow for this high-speed wedding and Team Leader Kim tells him to cut to the chase. Min-seok and Soo-young quickly reply, agreeing to love each other forever, and finish off it off with a peck. With that, the newly married couple walks back down the aisle to more fast-forward wedding music.

Jin-woo watches from the back and comments on how this wedding is so fitting for this couple. Bwahaha, I could not agree more.

He walks back to his car, only to find a random girl arguing with her ex on the phone. The argument gets heated, and the girl ends up asking Jin-woo to act as her boyfriend. Although he seems hesitant, he agrees and cringes as he speaks to the ex, warning him to stay away. The girl (cameo by Lee Chung-ah) thanks him and asks him for one more favor while he’s at it: take her to the nearby subway station.

She thanks him one more time at the station, and he drives off. A phone rings, and Jin-woo finds that the girl left her phone in the car. He picks it up, and she tells him that she left her phone in his car on purpose and asks him on a date. Aww, Jin-woo’s found himself some company.

Back at the fast-forward wedding, Min-seok and Soo-young prepare to take off for their honeymoon. Team Leader Kim wrestles Director Han out of the car while the guests send their congratulations to the newly married couple. Soo-young throws her bouquet, which ends up in the hands of Dae-han. He hands it to Yoon-ju, and it seems that their fight is over. We see another workplace couple – Assistant Park and Sang-hee – who talk about the destination of the honeymoon: Namiseom. Heh.

Three years later. Our lovely couple has a family… of small baby moss plants. The alarm goes off in the morning, and both Min-seok and Soo-young wait until the very last minute to turn it off. Soo-young realizes they’re late, but Min-seok looks too content in bed.

But they are indeed late. Min-seok and Soo-young run around the house putting on clothes. Just like their wedding, their life seems to be in fast-forward. Soo-young gives her moss plants a quick spray, wishes Min-seok good luck on his presentation, gives him some leftovers, and with a quick peck, they’re both off.

Duk-hwan and Tae-seok laze around on a college campus, and Min-seok interrupts their relaxation with a critical lecture about their hockey game. Tae-seok asks about the PT competition, and Duk-hwan adds something about a lantern. Min-seok yells at them, saying that it’s an intern position not a lantern.

To top things off, Tae-seok gets up and starts doing warm-up exercises, asking if it’s that PT (the same mistake Min-seok made previously). Calling Tae-seok an idiot, Min-seok leaves for his competition. Haha, it’s nice to see they haven’t changed.

Min-seok delivers a dynamic presentation about a sports complex, and as expected, he excels. He’s engaging, entertaining, and full of energy. Soo-young gets a call from Min-seok, who tells her that he got first place. The whole retail team celebrates this news, and Team Leader Kim tears up in happiness.

On the walk home, Min-seok asks Soo-young for a special dinner. She tells him that she’ll make him his favorite seaweed dish… again. She compliments Min-seok, saying that he’s kind of the best. Min-seok takes the compliment and elaborates with some self-boasting. He’s handsome, skilled, and young. He also compliments Soo-young, who has a lot of age. She’s old, she’s old, and she’s old. Way to rub it in, young one.

Soo-young walks off, slightly irritated, but Min-seok assures her that he’s crazy about her. Every day when he wakes up, he falls for her again. She claims that she’s still unsure, so Min-seok plants a couple kisses on her cheeks and forehead. Soo-young complains, wondering how long he’s going settle for these measly pecks. Ohhh, you want more, eh?

Min-seok turn to address her, “Popcorn sister, my popcorn (mine), my wife… thank you very kamsa for marrying me.” And with that, he swoops in for a real kiss, in the exact place where they shared their first kiss.

A montage showing our couple’s progression passes by as Soo-young narrates her final thoughts:

Soo-young: It could be that fate doesn’t come to those who sit around and wait for it. Real fate comes when you discover it, when you take the courage to choose it; then it comes to you as a gift. So with the person I’ve chosen as my fate, I’m loving with all my heart and I’m living my life to the fullest as the cool and confident modern woman, Jung Soo-young.

COMMENTS

D’awww. This drama just warmed my heart. I love how it started off as more of a Min-seok drama and then developed a greater focus on Soo-young. And that process of changing focus was smooth and gradual, reflecting Min-seok’s growing love and attention towards Soo-young. Of course, everyone had a chance to grow and develop throughout the drama, but I would have to argue that Soo-young’s growth had the fullest arc. But Soo-young didn’t drastically change who she really was; rather, she found the potential that was already there and opened it up for the world to see. Min-seok didn’t change our ditzy Soo-young; he just brought out the best of her. Now that’s the kind of relationship I want to see.

This whole episode was all kinds of funny and cute, and I thank the drama gods for giving us such a treat. The kisses, the popcorn proposal, Yoo-ah’s brusque confession, Jin-woo’s new date, the retail team’s singing… but I don’t think anything can beat the wedding. Holy moly, I was DYING. It literally felt like watching a wedding while pressing the fast-forward button, and all the small details made it such a memorable scene. That wedding will probably last as one of my favorite scenes because it was just pure hilarity. In fact, I might just go watch that again after I finish this recap. Hehe.

The last minute complications and relationship struggles were a bit nerve-wracking, but I can see that they were necessary. Soo-young made standards for Min-seok based on her own subjective opinion, and although it was to respect his age, it showed that the levels of trust and understanding were proportionally off. She tried to be so understanding of his age that she overlooked the trust factor. It’s the lack of trust that brewed conflict, but conflict was necessary to reaffirm what the relationship meant to both sides.

But reaffirming the relationship through marriage? To be honest, I was shaking my head… marriage is seriously the most unrealistic solution at this point. There were a million things going through my mind about how uncomfortable I felt about this: It really won’t turn out well if Soo-young and Min-seok continue to dream in their own little world because their little world is the most unrealistic place I’ve ever stepped foot in. I guess with an unrealistic world in an unrealistic drama, you gotta drop the realism and enjoy the cute.

But my initial feelings settled as I realized that everything was coming back around full circle. The loyalty in Min-seok that we first fall in love with comes back around when he needs it the most. And the marriage symbolized that to some extent. While the unrealistic factor was still clearly there, I’m totally okay with it because Min-seok and Soo-young deserved it.

Like Soo-young’s mother said, Min-seok had created such a tight-knit group of friends and allies because of who he was, and that’s no small feat. In the end, I don’t think the drama was a matter of true love or overcoming age gaps or any other barriers. It was about being fiercely loyal, unapologetically passionate, and embracing the vulnerabilities because someone’s always got your back.

Also, a shout-out to the writers, who’ve done a great job with this drama. Their comedic timing and placement of poignant moments was on point, and I applaud them for making me feel all the feels without sacrificing any significant plot lines. Although I didn’t agree with the direction of the ending at first, I commend them for pushing through the initial uncomfortable nature of the pairing and proving me wrong. As with most dramas, the writers had the easier option of sending our character abroad. Min-seok could have been sent to Germany to spend a few years maturing, becoming an adult, and finding some sort of success. But Min-seok follows his heart and decides what’s best for him, creating his own fate and deciding his own future.

There are so many things I will miss from this drama. The great ensemble, all the lovable characters, the workplace dynamic, Team Leader Kim’s verge of crying face, the Spam PPL, Jin-woo’s abs, Gramps… the charms in this drama were endless, and of course, I especially loved the performances by Seo In-guk and Lee Hana. They had a wonderful chemistry, and they brought out each other’s charms and fed off of each other to create such an oddly perfect couple. They were loving, vulnerable, supportive, brave, loyal, and if anything, they were generous. So here’s one more for y’all.

Wow, they really got married! I love the balls of this show! It is going against the norms and standing up for what you believe in, yea, it's all about positivity. I think Lee Ha Na sang the end song "fluttering heart" this time, that felt just right. seo in Guk running around in a light blue boxers, - precious! Thank You Very Kamsa, TVN for this gem of a show! Lotsa hearts, I'll miss this so much! To all the cast and crew, kudos to you all and Seo In Guk, we love you very, very Kamsa!

they did not go with our reality bites thing, coz this is a drama after all and they chose to take the road less taken, for that, as I've said in my comment, this show have guts for doing just that. All the noona romances have shied away from the marriage thing giving us a vague future for the couples like in Witch's Romance and I need romance 3.
Yoo jin woo has to have his happy ending, too and that girl is just right for him, cameo by Lee Chung Ah (flower boy ram yun shop) . manipulative like he was at the beginning, assertive, too. cute!
Yoo Ah's delayed reaction to Tae Suk's admirer who gave him a chocolate, not gonna lose a guy for the second time, right? and Tae Suk's reaction to Yoo Ah's claim- just like, yea,ok, am cool with that. cuteness!

back to lee min Suk and Jung Soo young--

We all thought they would end it with them just dating or a time jump after maybe min suk goes to Germany , but what this show would like us to appreciate is that Lee min suk and Jung soo young is a couple that is one in a million, that there are couples in this real world who can make it even with the age diff. And there are. We don't need to look further coz Seo in Guk's parents have a 7 year age diff, and they made it, too. I believe in happy endings, and King of High School Savvy, gave me that. I love you TVN! And more love to you, Seo In Guk!

Love that this show ended with a sweet kiss; what made it special was that it was the same place where Min Suk first kissed Soo Young, so there, my heart just melted.

This will have to be my No.1 for 2014.
Criteria: Best Cast Ensemble. Great Laughs. Much Heart. and the love, LoVe, LOVE for Seo In Guk. <3

The Cast Kiss should win for Best Kiss Category, too!
and yea, duh, Seo In Guk for Best Kisser!

If SIG wins as Best Actor for this drama, his mom would be so happy, first and foremost coz that was her fervent wish for him. (refer to Mamma Mia SIG eps)
Let's hope for thAT, too. ;-)

Speaking about Seo In Guk's parents' 7 year age difference, I just came across this clip last night: http://youtu.be/rs8dQklDb5U

I know it's an old clip and all, but it is just so fitting for the discussion right now!

Thank you very kamsa recappers and beanies for the awesome experience of watching this show together :)

Totally agree here! Also loved that they went the route that not everyone is cut out for academics and a degree. My own husband is an example of that and yet makes a 6 figure income. It's doable for someone with heart and hard work! That's huge statement for a Korean drama to make! Loved it from start to finish!!

Ha, ''love the balls of this show." You got that right. This show has turned virtually every single trope on it's head.
* A 'forbidden' relationship conveying such heart and innocence.
* Second leads who don't devolve into jealous, hateful competition for the lead's affection, but actually grow into complex and likeable characters on their own.
* A heroine whose "makeover" came late and with subtlety, still letting her display her quirkiness that has endeared the audience.
*An office group who supported that quirky lead without question, who cared for each other, and who developed their own stories that were nice counterpoints to the leads' relationship. And Director Kim! Don't get me started...hahaha.
* A refreshing lead who refused to misunderstand..."I'm not that kind of guy." How great is this?
* Striking reveals done on time and on point.

And the finale? I must say, I was among those who were initially put off with the premise...really a wedding? When he's still in high school? What about the time jump? But...as I thought about it over the last few days, I realize it's exactly like Purplecow said...a story that was coming around full circle, and it was Minsuk's loyalty that was truly the basis of the story. I appreciate your insightful recap about this Purplecow...it helped me actually celebrate the ending as I rewatched episode 17.

Hurray to these brilliant writers, directors, and brilliant cast. What a delightful couple months this has been.

Finally, my dear DB friends, how I appreciated the insight, humor and struggles you shared. Reading some of these comments these last 17 episodes has been a delight! Thank you very kamsa.

Now off to write some more poetry...;-)

Thanks Dramallama for the recap! Thanks to TvN and the HSKoS production team for giving us such a great and memorable show!

Quoting Min-seok "Water has been spilled.. The bus has left.. complete.. the end. Game Over." I will miss you show.

On to the episode finale...

HOW AWESOME AND RELEVANT WAS THAT CAMEO!!!! Here we were, camparing this show's age gap issue with IHYV and FBRS and lo and behold, we get Lee Chung Ah (female lead from Flower Boy Ramyun Shop) making a cameo. That was totally DAEBAK!!

What a great episode to close out a great show. Jin Woo saying "That ceremony is so like them." made me laugh because it's so true. An unconventional wedding for an unconventional couple. I was glad they did not throw in a kid after the time jump. It made them more responsible as husband and wife since Min Seok is not even finished with his studies. I also loved how they revisited some of the past episodes like the PT conversation, the reappearance of the popcorn bag, the last kiss done at the same place as the first kiss, etc.. I have to admit though, even if they messed up the ending, that cameo alone would have made watching it worthwhile. Hmmm.. SPAM must have put in a pretty penny for PPL. The OST was pretty awesome! Fluttering Heart by Honey G and Finding Myself by Seo In Guk really set the mood of the drama.

Things I picked up from the show:
I actually said "thank you very kamsa" to someone. lol
I yelled "MaMa!" on the phone when my mom called. She thought I was crazy.
I kept saying "Piripiri ko Piri". It's just one of those things that's fun to say. lol

I seldom get addicted to a show but this one got me hook line and sinker from beginning to end. I haven't been this exhausted anticipating/watching raw/re-watching with subs/discussing every episode of a show since Bride of the Century. hehe Good thing we still have Fated to Love You and Marriage Not Dating to ease the pain. I hope we get to see more great rom-coms this fall. Just give me a good story, great acting, plenty of skinship, great OTP chemistry and an awesome OST and I'm there.

Thanks for all the great dicussions. See you guys on the next addictive rom-com recap!

Uhm, I don't get the meaning of "piripiri ko piri"! I must have rushed through the episide like our couple through the wedding;-) So, where was this term used and what does it mean?

This term is used a lot when ever SY describes MS. I'm not korean, but I think it refers to "high schooler".

My Korean isn't that great, but here is my theory: Ko pi = nosebleed in Korean, and there's this idea that high schoolers always get nosebleeds from studying so hard.

That is true. I totally did not expect that ending. So we all thought that Lee Ha Na was gonna have a makeover, but she didn't. We thought that In Guk was gonna go to Germany and come back as an adul,t but he didn't. The show's unpredictability and heart was what captured the audiences. Kudos to the writers. I might have to follow your work from now on.

By the way, did you guys notice that Team Leader Kim was mimicking "My Sassy's girl's" dude? haha. :D It was soooo funny.

Boy, what a save from the last episode. While not the greatest ending in all of dramaland, it did manage to hit a nice note of funny and poignant. I was surprised by the fact that they went through with Min Sook as a child groom, the usual method is as Dramallama stated, leave the country and return a Grown Man.

I was glad they snuck in Jin Woo. After lasts weeks episode I was unsure how they would incorporate him into the story; his interactions with our main couple seemed kinda final last week. Let's hope he is successful in his next love with the cute car girl. Here's hoping they have a Jin Woo spinoff!! Haha

A Jin-woo spin off would be amazing! Though less likely to happen. I think Lee Hyoo Suk did a really good job in this role, I was worried about him taking on this challenge. Despite some hijinks in his character development, he really pulled off Jin-woo till the end.

I was trying to place why that lady seemed familiar and yes, that is Yang Eun-bi. I probably couldn't remember her because FBRS is one of those dramas I try to forget I ever saw.
I'm going to miss this show so much, especially Ricecake ajhussi. This episode is going down as one of my favourite drama finales this year, I was laughing from start to finish. This show was really awesome, here's to hoping My Secret Hotel would be just as good as this drama or maybe better. Seo In-gook, Lee Soo-hyuk, Lee Hana, Team Leader Kim, Halbae, Duk-hwan, Tae-suk, Yoo-ah, writernim, pdnim, everyone who participated in this wonderful drama, Thank You Very Kamsahmnida.

You'r so right, @rushie…that word describes my entire feeling after I watched the finale "Thank you very kamsa". Here's one for the writers, the PDs, the actors/actresses, the recappers, and the fellow watchers in DB. Thank you very kamsa for being ridiculous to the very end! (I mean it!) Sure, getting married at 18 for a guy to a woman 10 years older than him sounds unrealistic, but I for one am glad that the drama doesn't take the conventional ending I thought it was going to.

Thank you dramallama for the recap, and the rest of the dramabean team! Savvy has been such a wonderful ride, sure it has its down bits, but the overall goodness of the show has made it a new gem in my heart.

I actually didn't intend to watch this drama, until after reading four episodes of recap. Boy am I glad to use this as my comeback drama.

My favourite scene was actually when they were opening up to each other on the streets. When Min Suk started crying, I just teared up. Then Soo-young started crying, and I just had a waterfall coming out of my eyes However they then started to continue EATING THE POPSICLE WHILE IN TEARS. I was just like omg I love these two idiots.

The cameo by Lee Chung-ah! I haven't seen her since Flower boy ramyun shop! Although I was annoyed at how the writer felt they had to make a pairing for Jin-woo. I rethought again, and realised it's not necessarily that they will end up together. It's more the fact that Jin-woo is now open enough to accept these type of encounters and roll with it. Which makes me so happy to see, him grow up well.

Seo In Guk and Lee Hana are really the stars of the show, but the love and attention paid to the surrounding characters are also what really makes this drama shine. I also loved how simple and straightforward some issues were treated, no need for too much angsty, because hey like dramallama says "you gotta drop the realism and enjoy the cute".

I do wish they developed Hyung's story more, and he wasn't even at the wedding. But overall I'm very satisfied with the extensions, and the whole drama overall.

Thanks for the great ride Savvy!

Required fields are marked *

yes re: Jin Woo accepting these encounters in the future. I didn't see an OTP moment for them, just his realization that if someone offers him friendship and love then he should be open. I DID wonder if it was some kind of meta-private joke and maybe he had "lost" her to a first lead in another drama and the writers were joking about that, giving us a wink as sometimes happens in kdramas.

Same! 2 things I missed in the finale:
1) Where's hyung?! Could have had him pop up at the wedding and that would have been quite satisfying :(
2) Missing dad during that 3 years later segment, he was the only one - minus hyung where we didn't know what happened to him afterwards.

All in all, the finale served its purpose and concluded a wonderful little story that made my mondays and tuesdays a bit better.

oh and thank you very kamsa to all the actors Lee Soo Hyuk still why so friggin beautiful are you a girl? if Min Seok was suspicious I am too he was usually right

Seo In Guk - wow. honest, in Masters´Sun I thought him so and so, mediocre dare I say. but this role just fit like a glove to him and he was so natural in it it is astonishing. there was not a moment when I thought "he is an actor" he was Min Seok all the way through! I only saw the character!

and Lee Hana, at first the nerdy aspect seemed a bit theatrical but she also became so natural in a few episodes and kinda found the right kind of balance.
Minuses: the mystery of the brother wasnt very smooth, Jin Woo going from jerk to gentle guy neither. not very much. but get Seo In Guk to giggle once and I forgot the mistakes.
I never said that before in my life and I did not think I would but it would be fun to be a high schooler again just once. dont get me wrong, glad its over but I never had such a fun guy in my class as Min Seok.

Point taken. But if you're willing to make him a good guy by the end, especially with that sad miserable life and the unresolved issues (will he stay off the pills now ?), at least give him a cool scene with some super sexy girl.

Here's how I pictured it.

Jin Woo leaves the wedding, goes to the liquor store, some bad guys surround him as he heads back to the car, and just before the sexy bookworm is attacked, some hot girl shows up and kicks the bad guys' a*ses.

With a perfect English accent, she says " U okay ?" to a bewildered Jin Woo. [Smart, strong and beautiful ^^ ]. He can barely mutter a thank you when she just flashes a smirk and says in a lower tone [because we're fed up with loud female leads] : "Be careful on the way home".

As she turns to leave, jogging, Jin Woo stops her and asks to see her again "to pay her back". She says that she doesn't hang out with rich kids, no matter how good-looking they are. 3 steps later, she turns around : "but you, pal, could use some exercise. Tomorrow at 5 am, in front of XX. Don't be late." She leaves before he can answer, with a half-smug half-excited smile on her face. Jin Woo just watches her run, and says : "I could definitely use some exercise".

THE END.

Wow!!!!
Such joy when I saw this recap! Thanks so much!

I wasn't really sure of the whole marriage idea either. Marriages are ...well, iffy...even if the folks are in love. But dang! The acting skillz of Min Suk when he looked at Soo Young, the look of love and devotion and worship in his eyes! I totally melted. So, why give up something great in the present because of fears of what will/may happen in the future?

And wasn't that wedding the best counter-culture dramatic moment of the year??? There is a lot in this drama that is counter-culture but a wedding with poor folks in a school yard..instead of a super-expensive wedding palace...SOOOOOOOo good! I don't think I've ever seen that in a drama ever. The popcorn "proposal ring" was the best ever. So many couples go into debt to get this "rock" on their hands, or have a wedding to show off to the guest and to the family. Everything here was done for love! All the guests are present because of love. There is total transparency and honest..and lack of nuptuals pretension.

I didn't feel hyung's absence at all; hyung has always been slowly disappearing....for him the family was destroyed when his mom and dad died. he has no heart for family.

This'll be one of my faves. Waiting to see the special.

Thanks for the insightful recapping you've done throughout.

Required fields are marked *

Carole - I think being counter-culture is what made this whole drama work - Soo-young never let cultural mores define her life, I think she was ahead of her time in some ways by just being herself. Min-seok never got points for smarts, he really was a thinker and a doer. I was so impressed that when his hockey career ended that he was able to put it in perspective and barely miss a beat in life. Really, that is something for a high school dude. Min-seok knew the value of family and way loyal.

The special will be the cherry on top!

I too wasn't convinced with the marriage idea at first. I was saying to them: "Are you guys sure? Marriage is not all lovey dovey and you are going to solve a problem with another huge step?". I loved High School King so, so much when it first began but my heart went from bursting like popcorn in anticipation of a new episode to feeling underwhelmed. I still don't know what happened, though some commentators had some good ideas in the previous recap. I can't help but shake the thought of when literally every person you know is telling you something is a bad idea, maybe it really is a bad idea, along with what would have been so terrible about Minseok going to Germany for a bit. Long distance relationships can certainly work and some space may have been good for them both to continue to grow and mature before coming back together. But no, we need a wedding and we need it ASAP because getting married will somehow magically solve all of their problems; couldn't bring myself to drop the realism and just enjoy the cute (even if it's a LOT of cute - the fast forward wedding was hilarious, not to mention a good symbol of their own rushing into things). I don't quite want to flip a table, but I do want to throw my hands up in the air.

Still, thank you for the recap! :) And thank you to HSK for some wonderful moments and characters, despite my whinings. Seo Inguk nailed his role(s) six ways to Sunday and Lee Hana's Sooyoung was absolutely delightful. Jinwoo's role generally called for a more subtle touch, but I thought Lee Soohyuk did it well (and looked smoking hot in those suits as a bonus) and I continue to love Yoo Ah. I hope her life right after the wedding wasn't too awkward, considering her new brother-in-law, but I'm glad she's moved on to a guy who appreciates her. Overall still a fun little show and one I'm glad I got to watch and chat with all of my fellow commentators about. :)

Nodding.about the not going to Germany but I felt a kind of sinkhole there...being with hyung....in another country. Not sure if there would be joy in that. So much of going to Germany seemed to be equated with "and you don't know how bad it'll be for Korea in the future." So I felt that there was an assertion that Korea could be good for him and him for Korea and that the best youth of the country would not be lost through some brain drain. Cause so many people leave Korea or native homelands and never return. Min Suk's decision felt like a belief in the possibility of the homeland.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Interesting observation! :) I saw it less as homeland versus foreign country and more as cold older brother versus future wife. I was thinking about it on a smaller scale, how it could have been nice for him to finally be in the same country as his hyung for a while, how they could have gotten to know each other again, and bonded as a family with their father.

He doesn't owe hyung anything though, so I could understand a decision not to go and to instead stay in Korea with his friends and Sooyoung.

I keep wondering if ths drama will have a special place in Seo In Guk's heart because of his own parents' experience-- meeting each other, getting pregnant, SIG being born nine months later, and their marriage being registered the day they registered his birth. With such a family background, he might well believe in quickie marriages and love. Some marriages can overcome the strangest/most difficult things.

Oh, how I love this episode. Let me count the reasons.

1) That monologue about Min Seok from Team Leader Kim. So freakin’ adorable.

2) That popcorn proposal. ALL the good things.

3) Min Seok kneeling in the rain to get permission from Soo Young’s mother. How respectful and gentlemanly!

4) The Worst. Wedding. Ever. And it suited them perfectly, lol.

5) COUPLE PAJAMAS!!!!

6) The INSANITY that was that sports + dating project pitch.

7) All of the kissing. *swoooon*

I love it. I love it. I love it. Was everything rushed? Ummm, that would be a big fat yes. Do I have any idea what kind of job Min Seok is pursuing at the end of the episode? Hell no. Do I understand Why he is pursuing it? Not a clue. Do I care?

Not really.

It’s a bit of a weak finale from a writing perspective, but from a heart-melting perspective, it’s pretty much perfect.

When they decided to get married on the street, I was:

"WHAT? Wait. NOOOOO! Let him go to Germany and be a director!"

When the office girls persuaded Soo Young, I was totally with them. And then they showed a montage of Min Suk in a club, I was...

"What? Wait. No. That's not like Min Suk. He won't do that."

And then he proposed with popcorn. And then they got married. And three years and a family of Moss later, Min Suk is still ahead of his friends in terms of mental life years as he was ahead of them when he was eighteen. I suddenly couldn't for the life of me imagine any other life for him---

And then I did the math. They should totally start getting pregnant when he starts landing in at 25. Ovaries expire and I'd like to be a godmother. But I guess one or two babies is totally perfect for them.

I miss them. I'll miss them. I think the best part of the drama is that it's truthfully about two characters who made a life together.

And you're sooo right OhSoEnthusiastic, despite all the imperfections from the technical perspective, this OTP will take a soft spot in my heart for ever. I love them. I love the Drama.

Like our young male lead's brave confession to his OTL- he may be young; he may regret much later about the marriage .All he knows is thst his heart wants to be with her! I mean does a "older" couple automatically guarantee a happily ever after ??? No one can wholeheartedly say that; no one can! I wish this cute couple a happy life together and thank you very kamsa for a beautiful 16 hrs of your journey .

I loved the show, but not the finale. It felt very, very rushed. Almost maniacally so. By the end I found myself saying, "What just happened? Did she just marry a high school junior...and no one has a problem with this?" The barely there objections from friends and family were resolved in minutes. Even so, I fully believed, all the way to the actual wedding, that it wasn't going to happen because that would be ridiculous. I thought he was going to go to Germany, there would be a time skip, and he'd come back all nice and legal. The whole finale was kind of...deranged and frantic. They just barreled through and ended it.

I was expecting the time jump THEN the wedding as well but I remember smiling and saying to myself, "WOW! Another slap in the face of normal kdrama. Usually we get a time jump BEFORE the couple marries...but this time we get it AFTER! How neat is that??? They'll grow together, together."

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

This was the one instance ever that I've WANTED a time-skip - three years in germany for Min-seokie, and then come back, adult, accomplished, ready to take responsibility...and there was no separation. No timeskip, no leaving.

But actually, when I think about it later...I really like it. They chose to spend that time together, BEING together, and that's important, and the best choice. There're always opportunities - Min-seok's clearly taken them, they didn't have to be apart for that to happen (and it's such a big gripe for me in every other drama (eg: Dal-ja's Spring, Kim Sam-soon, Master's Sun, to name a few. I hate it as a convention SO MUCH). Although, tbh I kept on expecting and kept on expecting for them to go to Germany - at one point I thought they'd get married and go together.

Again, I like the choice to stay. In material terms, it makes sense to say, 'let's wait, let me go to Germany first' but I like that the entire characterisation of their relationship is that it's NOT material: it's putting aside those things to say, if we're together, we'll handle it - we'll handle it together'. And I love it and it's perfect, even if it is a quiet, winding-down ending.

And I guess this story wasn't really about hyung after all, huh. And the fact remains that it's always been true: hyung is a lone wolf. He didn't stay with them, even after he was all, 'I should have been with you instead of off revenging' - he still left and that says everything about him, right in the previous episode. Just like he's had a minimal, bit-part appearance in Min-seok's life, he has a minimal, bit-part appearance in the show. That's how *he* chose to live. His only concession to that was to throw out the idea that dad and Min-seok could move to Germany.

Thank you dramallama and purplecow for the awesome recaps!

Many, many actors shined through this series. So glad that the chemistry between Seo In-guk and Lee Ha-na worked well. Going to miss the cast, especially Team-Leader-now-Director Kim and his "anchovy" superior. While the finale felt like the writers wanted to wrap it the series comically and cutely, it has its fair share of special moments (eg. fast forwarded wedding) and the series was quite real and humanistic overall. Thank you very 감사, production and acting team!

This episode had me crying, laughing, cry-laughing the entire time. The popcorn proposal was so precious it made my heart explode. Seo In Guk and Lee Hana were so brilliant in their roles. I'm going to miss seeing them together!

To echo some of the other comments, I didn't expect Hyung to make an appearance either. He was never really in Min Suk's life to begin with, so I didn't expect him to fly over for a 10min wedding.

And what a wedding! I was howling with laughter at the slap-dash wedding; it's probably my favourite drama wedding scene ever. (Also, my ideal wedding would pretty much consist of a super-quick ceremony and a party in a field for the rest of the night.)

I'm going to miss this world where even the supporting characters were so endearing and an absolute treat to watch. I usually don't pay that close attention to sideplots, but with HSKOS, I didn't dare take my eyes off the screen in case I missed one of Team Leader Kim's fits, Assistant Manager Yoon's knowing glances, Jin Woo's smirks, the rest of the Retail Team's antics or Duk Hwan/Tae Suk's double act, etc.

Thank you dramallama & purplecow for recapping and providing insightful commentary on HSKoS every week. Without your recaps, some scenes would've absolutely gone over my head. And thanks to the frequent Savvy beanies for the engaging discussions and commentary in every thread!

It's going to be tough for me to move on from this drama, The withdrawal symptoms have begun. I feel like I'll throw a Team Leader Kim-style fit come Monday. I just want to backhug this show forever.

Thank you for the recaps. I didn't intend to watch this drama but after reading the first few recaps, I was persuaded that it would not be a waste of time.

And boy, did I enjoy this show. What I found unique about this drama was there really wasn't an out and out villain and the supporting characters were truly SUPPORTING. Nobody was trying to undermine anybody; nobody was throwing obstacles in any one's path. The problems faced by our leads came from life - just from daily routines (well almost routine since our hero was leading a double life), from familial to friendship to love related issues. But the conflicts still kept me glued to this drama. And most were resolved by discussion rather than deception.

Thank you cast, writers, director for this show. I will miss you.

I loved this show. It started slow and turned into something wonderful. I am so happy the female lead never turned into the classic cliched beauty. She was wonderfully awkward through and through. I also didn't mind the marriage because what Min Seok wanted was family. He has a tight knit group and he loves them all. This was a heartwarming drama. It wasn't at all what I thought it was going to be, but I loved it.

What a ride it was. HSKS has its share of ups and down and at times defies the logic. But man this is drama. The actors are freaking good! Cheers to the production team in creating such characters. For me, aside from the story, a drama is a success if you see yourself caring and missing the characters, laughing and crying with them. And that's what this drama actually did.
All the best and thanks to Dramallama and Purplecow for the recaps.

i loveddd the ending.. it's like the best ending of all endings in KDramaland eva! <3 this is the first time i rewatched a final episode right after it ended. the editing was a little choppy here and there but overall the story ended beautifully, everyone got their happy ending.. sooo adorable. i'm glad they stick true to rom-com formula.. i dont remember being so happy watching a drama from start to finish before. love every character, everyone just made me smile. loved every bit of it .

i never liked watching drama about high school kids but i'm glad i gave this drama a start. totally beyond my expectations.

That wedding is probably one of my favorite scenes of the whole show. I love how they turned a sports court into a rather swanky wedding hall haha. Wouldn't mind if my own wedding looks similar tbh.

Not only that, but I love how everyone was there. In many dramas, it seems to only be a small group, and all the friends made along the journey are forgotten. I'm glad they weren't here, and I'm glad all the side characters had time and chances to grow and change. This is one of the few shows that ends with me genuinely NOT hating anyone. Daddy Yoo changed his ways at the end, as did Hyung Seok. Jin Woo grew so much and I find myself really liking him by the end, likewise with Yoo Ah. And I can't forget Sooyoung, and how much she grew and matured, and yet stayed vulnerable but strong at the same time.

I don't think I've ever been so happy watching a drama in so long. It's been such a feel-good show, with little drama yet lots of stuff to keep it interesting and relatable. I agree with what you said dramallama about the show: "It was about being fiercely loyal, unapologetically passionate, and embracing the vulnerabilities because someone’s always got your back."
I love that theme. It's about not only love, but family, friendship, fun, loyalty, and life.

I'm so happy with the ending. I'm happy they stayed together and didn't do the usual I'll-leave-you-so-I-can-be-better-for-you stuff. I'm happy that his friends are still there, and his team is still supporting him 3 years later. Only thing I wonder is where Dad is living now.

I'm going to miss this drama. There were so many things I loved, from the actors and acting, the chemistry, the characters, the camaraderie, the laughs, and love, so many things :)

But what I loved the most, and what I'll miss the most, is definitely...Seo In Guk's facial expressions in here XD

I personally thought the ending was very rushed. However this is one instance I would not like to see a time skip. Time skip is so cliche and why is that needed when we all know SIG is mature for his age? He can be married yet still finish college and continue to work. Why not? If two people are in love and would like to be married to face life together, I fully support it. :)

Ok, now that my EPIC SQUEE is over & done with, I can actually discuss the merits of this show, of which there are MANY. Sure, there were some minor issues with the execution, but HOLY JESUS BREADSTICK I even found those issues to be refreshing because none of them added unnecessary angst to the proceedings.

How refreshing to watch a show where the characters learn about their feelings quickly and grow from that process of learning, and TALK ABOUT what they've learned so that they can grow their relationship, too! How refreshing to see a couple experience relatively mundane arguments and use these arguments to learn about each other and build a stronger relationship! How amazing to have a cast of supporting characters who ground each other in reality but build the OTP up when push comes to shove! To have character consistency! To have leads with believable flaws who are nonetheless good to the core! To see them put work into loving each other better!

And the acting!! So good!!!

Gah! This show!!! Watching it was like an epic snuggle fest with the love of your life! It didn't always give me knock-down-drag-out butterflies (although sometimes it did), but it made me feel warm all over!

When I finished 16 ep. I though I hope they don't use the same end as always "wait til I study and become better abroad" and THEY DIDN'T !! i feel so refreshed! this drama make my summer much more fresh!

I like they decided to show us the other characters futures without forgetting the main couple.

This drama got me til the end (and thas really difficult in dramaland) I'm so happy!

Thanks for the recap!! I will miss this show so much ; __ ;

I am SO HAPPY this drama bulldozed through my expectations of sending Min seok abroad. I loved where the couple headed and it melts my heart to think of Soo young and Min seok's decision to stick it out together. I am sorry for not having more faith in this couple when all they've shown is loyalty! <3<3<3

I will say, however, that I am still slightly opposed to the idea of a high schooler marrying someone ten years his senior. I'm just glad this drama made the characters so real that I didn't focus on that.

This was a great show! Not a perfect show, mind you, but a great one nonetheless. My favorite thing about King of Savvy has to be the awesome ensemble. I loved nearly everyone ('cept Papa President, of course) in this drama. The entire retail team, Jin Woo, Dad, Gramps, Yoo Ah, the two little high school dorks... And of course, our two main leads. The cast was really well put together and had great chemistry. Their characters may have been silly or immature at times, but the acting was spot on! And as in many dramas, the situation was a *tad* bit unrealistic, but the characters were full of heart and were very realistic themselves.
So praise to the writers, praise to the actors, praise to the director, praise to the entire team.
Thank very, very kamsa for making a great drama. I'm happy. King of Savvy, you rock!

"I guess with an unrealistic world in an unrealistic drama, you gotta drop the realism and enjoy the cute."

- I couldn't agree more...I too felt uncomfortable at the whole marriage idea. Like you said marriage is such a bad solution and the odds of a couple like this realistically lasting thru marriage is just slim, but I applaude the writers bold move. Plus the hasty marriage did stay true to the personalities of both Soo Young and Min Seok. Which is obvious when Jin Woo claimed that the wedding was just like the couple: messy, irrational, and adorable.lol

I'm gonna miss this show...thanx for the recaps! :)

Been reading the recaps, but have not actually watched the drama yet. I kind of like that the got married before the time skip, it was an unexpected twist (even though I am waiting for the drama where they do sit and watch the clock and count down til 20 - I think Girlfriday and Java talked about once, and the thought makes me laugh). But, curious about the logistics: how old do you have to be to get married with parents consent in Korea (I know there are places in the USA you can get married young with parents consent, curious how this works in Korea).

I just feel like something happened behind the scenes during the last few episodes, starting at around the 15th episode. I mean, Min Suk was basically, "Where ya been Hyung?" And Hyung Suk was all, "Oh, I was a murder suspect." Err...okay, care to elaborate on that? Hyung: "No. Not really."
That was the beginning of the weirdness. The editing of the 16th episode was really strange, and major plot points had pretty anti-climactic resolutions (Hyung is back! He wants revenge! Eh, he's over it. Or...You're a high school junior, our relationship is scandalous! Eh, whatever, it'll be fine.)
I always love the beginnings and often the middle of a kdrama, but I don't understand why they so rarely stick the landing.

I agree, kikidee. I'm glad conflicts weren't drawn out for endless episodes (bless this show for never going down the path of noble idiocy, seriously that is so refreshing), but I can't shake the feeling that a lot of resolutions got glossed over in a hurry for the sake of rushing us into a happy ending. Hyung's seeking revenge on Comfo, the whole plot point that started this drama--and now he's not. Jinwoo's dad is a huge ass to him--and now he's not. Sooyoung's mother is really against the marriage--and now she's not. I wish we could have seen a little more of the journey from point A to point B in those plot points (and others).

Just like you I had issues with ep 15 and 16, but the finale made up for them. Some of my probs were due to the extention they got, but Hyung's story was written badly. My one real point of criticism for this show.

Thank you very kamsa dearest King of Savvy for rejecting the dreaded time skip! I don't think marriage was an easy out but the courageous choice to face the obstacles together. Young marriage isn't unrealistic just not the norm for most Koreans (and almost everyone now).

Thanks for another winner, tvN! While there are some things I'd change about this show if I could (e.g. I liked purplecow's vision of MS and JW uniting forces to defeat Hyung better than the way it actually played out) overall, HSKoS was one of the most satisfying rides I've had in a long time. Like many have said, it had such a wealth of endearing characters, a phenomenal cast, and some really lovely writing (and music!). I'm grateful for all the warm-fuzzies this drama has elicited~ and I'm very grateful to dramallama and purplecow for the great job they did. Hugs, yeorobun! *waves to Gramps who's surely munching on some heavenly chocolate*

Wish I had more time to spazz in detail about the finale, but I have to watch it again before I do. tvN has truly done it again. Just couldn't miss this drama with Seo In Guk and it turned out to be such an amazing ride. I just loved the entire ensemble. This drama was just a breath of fresh air. The public networks should truly take notes and see what a rom com free of the typical cliches looks like. The popcorn proposal was just pure gold. My only disappointment was that the writers never revisited the fact that Min Suk met Soo Young on that bus way back when. Minsuk lending Soo Young his phone in her drunken stupor and Soo Young giving him her popcorn in gratitude was how she got her nickname. Even though she was drunk as hell, I really did want her to remember (or at least find out) that she had already met Min Suk before Comfo.

This drama deserves all the praise it's received and I can't wait to see this entire ensemble's future works. And OMG Seo In Guk and his kisses. He destroyed the competition with his Reply 1997 kiss scenes and now he's done it again. What to do if he gets paired up with Yoon Eun Hye. Screens just might combust.

That's what love is about ~ one part of it is looking/feeling ecstatic without an ounce of judgement even your partner does the stupidest of all things..

And Soo Young imaginary baby looks like her mother..hehe.
