Han Sun-hwa in first lead role opposite Lee Jang-woo in Rosy Lovers
by awcoconuts
She’s on the fast track to stardom: Idol Han Sun-hwa (of girl group Secret) had her first minor role in 2013’s Ad Genius Lee Tae-baek, played mistress of disguise Jenny in God’s Gift – 14 Days, and moved up to second lead status in the (currently airing) tvN show Marriage Not Dating. Now we’re getting reports Han’s been cast as the lead in MBC’s upcoming weekend drama, tentatively titled Rosy Lovers, and she’ll start on the production as soon as Marriage Not Dating concludes and she wraps up promotional activities for Secret’s newest album, which drops next week.
It’s pretty remarkable that she just debuted as an actress early last year and has already snagged a lead role, and on a broadcast weekend show opposite another pretty face and singer-turned-actor, Lee Jang-woo (Pretty Man, I Do I Do), no less. Rosy Lovers will revolve around Lee’s character, who suffered a major setback in his youth. He doesn’t let the obstacle get him down, however, and continues to search for happiness and the answers to life’s questions, while leaning on and finding hope through his family.
He meets Han Sun-hwa’s character by chance in his building — she’s the daughter of his mom’s friend, and her character name is, punnily enough, Baek Jang-mi (White Rose). Jang-mi is an immature princess and a mama’s girl; a second-year costume design student in university who’s never known hardship. She becomes curious about Lee after their encounter, and when they get involved in some sort of mishap together, they’ll have to deal with the unexpected consequences.
I’m excited for Han Sun-hwa, who really seems to have made the most out of material given to her in previous parts, and I’m totally behind this good-looking pairing. Let’s hope they can prove to us that opposites attract, when Rosy Lovers follows Jang Bori Is Here on MBC in October.

I was so confused to see the positive reaction until I scrolled back up and saw it wasn't girlfriday or javabeans talking. Sunhwa is most definitely not ready for lead yet. The only reason she's watchable in Marriage, Not Dating is because she's supposed to play a cold city girl who is detached from her feelings. The last couple of episodes where brick wall comes crumbling down and she begins to admit her lingering feelings for KiTae have just been cringe worthy.

"Jang-mi is an immature princess and a mama’s girl; a second-year costume design student in university who’s never known hardship."
This is pretty much similar to the roles she's played in both Ad Genius and Marriage. I think she's been convincing in those. To me her greatest challenge will be creating a character that's sympathetic instead of the-one-you-love-to-hate.

I had the same reaction and did the same thing! A couple of supporting roles for the past two years does not a lead actress make. I kind of feel bad for pretty talented actresses who seem to be stuck in minor roles because they do not have the connections or idol exposure to be lead, or more experienced and seasoned actresses stuck in second lead "bitch" roles.
Now I finally understand what the fuss against casting idols is all about.

Ugh, I thought she was an emotional-less actress in all of her roles (esp. the current Marriage not Dating drama). It's like watching a wall perform. I am not surprised she got a lead role, after all, she's an idol like Suzy, who have pretty faces and therefore can get lead role material when they don't have the skills to match up.

In Marriage Not Dating, Han Sunhwa is suppose to play a character that people hate and she was obviously successful while Hangroo played a character that people generally should root for but many dont like her Jangmi character. Now, Seoul International Youth Film Festival just picked Sunhwa as one of nominees for BEST ACTRESS for her efforts in Marriage Not Dating and Hangroo wasnt. That says something about how the experts in the industry judge acting as compared to drama fans who are influenced by the likable/non likable role actors play. Han Sunhwa does not belong to a big famous & influential agency nor does her status as a Kpop idol compare to Suzy & Yoona (and other idols who have gone straight to lead roles without experience) even though she and her group are relatively popular. Sunhwa is not at all in a position to bring up ratings for her name and yet one of the major 3 TV stations have confidence with her to pull off a big role and an International Film Festival acknowledged her skills. It's a risk by MBC but a calculated one. Sunhwa has been doing cameos and small roles since 2010, way more compared to some of the idols who went straight to lead roles without prior experience. I'm wishing her the BEST!!

U consider nominees like Park Shinhye, YoonA, Jung Eunji , Dasom, Park Boyoung and some others as kids? Or u meant the voters? As far as i know, anyone in Korea can vote.
Alright, what I say above isnt important but what's important is the panel who picked these nominees are adults and industry experts so I have no idea what kind of argument u are trying to make here by putting down the festival like a "Kid's Choice award". Would u say the same naive remark if someone u liked got nominated here instead? I bet not but that's normal i guess
Sensible
August 8, 2014 at 7:56 AM
How about u do the normal thing and reply to me and try and think and make sense as to why is Sunhwa getting a big role when she's not popular enough to increase the ratings and her company has no influence in the industry and she actually auditioned in ALL her roles so far without getting any favors? (she even told audition stories for her dramas)
How about u explain how Jangmi who is suppose to make majority of people cheer for her partly failed to do so but Sunhwa successfully did her role? (Even her own fans hate Kang Seah, that's how good she is)
And yes I think large number of drama fans who actually write comments on sites are naive high school middle school kids & fangirls who are not even old enough to support themselves but embarrassingly try to judge decisions made by a multi-million corporation like MBC. Think about it
My point is she's good enough and people in the know think so and willing to risk a lot of money to give her a big responsibility. Instead your answer is Hahaha? Okay...Peace.. I think I got u figured :-)

@Sensible - please, you're embarrassing yourself. No one here gives a flying poop about your favourite idol aside from our opinion of her acting abilities (not that good).
And pigsnout left their reply right up there, which I will translate if you have trouble with English: she means that the idea that some 'industry experts' from a festival with the words Seoul International Youth whatever in its name have the authority to declare your precious Sunhwa as a better actress than Han Groo, is laughable. Clear?

Being nominated for an award really doesn't prove anything - award shows are simply full of politics and manipulation, and are no longer reliable. That being said, I do agree that HSW did get a less favourable role. People are bound to like HG over her, but that in no way changes the fact that her acting had A LOT of room for improvement. She's still very green in my opinion, even more so compared to HG.

Ugh. I have no problems with "Idols" becoming actors IF THEY CAN ACT, but sadly, most can not. Most stick out like a sore thumb - as this one does.
Are there just too many "idols" with nothing to do so they stick them into dramas? Churn out less "idols" Korea.
Give the acting parts to the talented actors and actresses. There are enough of those - keep them employed and give these surplus "idols" something else to do.

So I kind of have to disagree with a lot of the comments I'm seeing here. Contrary to popular belief, I think Han Sun Hwa is more then capable of handling a lead role. Although I love Kpop, I usually hate seeing idols who can't act in lead roles when someone with more and better talent could have taken their spot (Minho and Taecyeon, I love you guys but please stop making dramas or movies; just don't act; please for the love of god just rap and be models for the rest of your lives; and if you have it in you; retire as composers or mentors in your companies or something). However, I really like Han Sun Hwa in Marriage Not Dating; and at first I didn't even recognize her even though she's my favorite member from Secret. To me, that's how captivating she was as a second lead. I think the other actors and especially the PD and writer have a lot to do with how Sun Hwa comes off on screen, but over all she's got a great energy in dramas, and I feel immersed in who she is as a character everytime I watch her. She even makes this could be typical second lead scenario relatable for me. I'm really excited that she's going to be a main lead, and since Secret comes from a company that doesn't yet have much influence over the drama world (to my knowledge) I think she was chosen partly because she's an idol, but also partly because she's an idol with talent. I don't think she would have gotten to a main lead so quickly without it. I will definitely give this show a chance and see if Sun Hwa can be more then just an acting-dol, and I think it would be great to give other a chance too. I really see something special in her.

I'm currently watching Marriage Not Dating in which she is a second-lead. In terms of portraying the character, she's amazing. I did watch God's Gift and despite how little she appeared on screen, she was still pretty good, for a newbie but then again, I was more focused on the action so sort of didn't care about anyone who wasn't a lead.
I've never seen any of the dramas Lee Jang-woo were in, nor have I heard of him until now so this will be fun.
The premise seems pretty typical but I'll watch a few episodes. I'll probably tolerate it very well considering I've been watching Jang Bori, is Here.
PLEASE STOP JUDGING HAN SUN-HWA FOR BEING AN IDOL. Give her a chance for this role. We don't know how she'll do as a lead so please, calm down. Secret is not A Pink popular anyways so obviously, this isn't trying to just attract a tremendous amount of fans like what they almost did with Nodame Cantabile (Cantabile Romance) with Yoon-ah. I honestly think, that once some of you read the word "idol" it's automatic for your brain to register, "ratings." The actress/actor must be very popular, or their group must be to attract a large amount of viewers. I can't even name all the members of SNSD or Miss A or A Pink or all the members in guy group either (but since we're talking about an actress, I went with the girl groups). I doubt that some of you have actually heard of Secret or know any other members besides her (I don't either), so let's all calm down and give her this chance. I do think sometimes that some idols should just stop acting or should not have been given a role due to their popularity or connections, but this isn't the case here.
She hasn't had many roles, nor has she had any big roles besides in Marriage Not Dating as Kang Se-ra which she is doing wonderfully in, so we'll see how she does with this. I don't want to judge too quickly because this is her first lead role. But if she does terribly in it and I lose hope in the drama as well, then I'll just sigh and move onto another drama. The premise sounds pretty cliche, too, so we can always watch another one with better writing and actors/actresses for the same plot and similar situation.

"It's pretty remarkable [that she's scoring a lead role just over a year after acting debut]"
Not really though, she is an idol. Whose management probably thinks three small roles is more than enough training for her and now they can throw their weight around and get her a lead role.
She is ok but no standout, I am so sick of idols and their agencies behaving as if acting career is their god given right while far more talented actresses who prove themselves in supporting roles really well, never get the chance. I will be so annoyed if the IHYV PD and writer's new drama also goes and casts another idol in the lead, they did fine with no idols in IHYV.

Obviously if it is someone who is genuinely talented like Jung Eunji/IU/Lee Joo or who spent a lot of effort to take many small roles to develop their skills like Im Siwan or even delivered a performance that was not just good, but great despite poor writing (Jaejoong) then it's ok. But this girl and Krystal really never made me think they are leading lady material yet.

On the other hand, Sunhwa was a surprise for me in Marriage not dating, I might have set the bar too low for an idol (not to get too disappointed maybe), but I really really thought she did great/well in the episodes that I've watched (haven't been keeping up to date with the drama though) compared to other acting idols.
