Fated To Love You: Episode 14
by HeadsNo2
This episode takes not-so-long-distance shenanigans to a whole new level as our hero jumps through, over, and under various hoops to catch even a snippet of conversation from his favorite snail before she disappears forever/goes abroad. (Same thing, right?) I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t fun watching Gun squirm now that he finds himself chasing after Mi-young, and while the events that tore them apart are still fresh in our memories and never lost in theirs, this week goes to prove that while Fated To Love You has the power to break hearts, it may just have the power to mend them.
Ratings-wise, Fated slipped back into second place with 10.7% while Joseon Gunman returned to first with 11.0%. Competitor It’s Okay, It’s Love followed close behind with 10.2%. It’s tight this cycle, isn’t it?

EPISODE 14 RECAP
After Mi-young and Gun unexpectedly fall into each other’s arms, Gun reacts with his trademark laugh at seeing Mi-young—but he thinks this is all a dream.
Mi-young’s expression is much different, and when Gun longingly reaches toward what he thinks is Dream Mi-young, Real Mi-young’s eyes fill with tears… right before Gun falls over, drunk.
After dragging him into her room, Mi-young sits by his side for a while, debating whether to touch him like she wants. In the end she doesn’t, and Gun wakes up the next morning alone with a note from her explaining what happened last night, along with the polite reminder that he should return to his room before she gets back. “It would be nice if we didn’t see each other again,” the note finishes.
Gun is flabbergasted when he reads it: “Last night wasn’t a dream?” Then he sighs that Mi-young doesn’t even want to see his face. But then he remarks to himself that she really isn’t a post-it girl anymore—she’s superglue.
Mi-young can’t help but think back to Gun being so happy to see her in his “dream” last night and thinks to herself that, unlike him, she didn’t ever want to see him in her dreams.
After accidentally witnessing Gun leaving Mi-young’s room, Daniel doesn’t directly reference it when he sees Mi-young. She feels a duty to be open about Gun’s unexpected visit last night, only for Daniel to stop her: “Is the person you met by chance yesterday so important that you need to tell me about him?”
She shakes her head no after realizing that Daniel knew about Gun already, and Daniel’s more than happy to switch subjects to the person who bought Mi-young’s prized painting.
But it becomes clear that he’s hiding how he feels about Gun from her, not just because of the serious looks he sneaks when she’s not watching, but because he literally confronts Gun as he’s checking out. Ha, did they go from one cafe scene just to go into another?
They share veiled pleasantries as they talk about “Ellie” (as Daniel only calls her), even though Daniel feels the need to assert his dominance when it comes to Gun by telling him that he’ll let the hotel incident slide this time, but never again. “I don’t play that role anymore. Me comforting her when you hurt her… I’ve played that role enough.”
Gun’s not interested in comparing weenie sizes though, and instead rises to his feet to give Daniel a respectful bow: “Then you must be better at it. The person who’s usually in that role tends to do it better. Thank you… for watching over Mi-young so well.” Daniel’s in a fightin’ mood, and returns his gesture by asking him whether he has the right to even say that.
“Let’s get something straight: I’m not looking after her. I’m by her side because she’s someone I like and who’s precious to me.” Daniel adds. Gun, again, doesn’t take the confrontational bait, but is put at ease with Daniel saying that since he claims he can read people very, very well.
Gun can only watch from his car as Mi-young greets people outside the art gallery, and wishes her a sincere congratulations she’ll never hear. It sounds more like a final goodbye, as he says aloud his hope that she’ll keep moving up in the world.
“But as for me… I liked seeing you,” he adds, right before he makes snail hands. D’aww.
Mama Yong is singing a different tune about Mi-young now that she’s in the news and is headed for artist stardom, but it’s still cute how Yong is still ever-supportive of his sister-in-law.
He even shows Mi-young’s news articles to Grandma Wang, who can’t contain her excitement when she realizes that Mi-young is officially back in Korea—but she can’t bring herself to tell Gun about it either, thinking he’s still in the dark.
Daniel gets some good news over the phone and unexpectedly backhugs Mi-young in joy: He thinks he’s finally found his sister. Mi-young is overjoyed at the news and hugs him in return, gladly accepting his offer for her to go with him to meet his prospective sister in Seoul.
Mi-young is excited to get a text from Young-ja/Gun, and I really like the way they’re handling their text exchanges by having Mi-young and Gun speak their written words. The split screen is made so that it looks like they’re sleeping in the same bed, and it’s extra cute how they react like they are in the same room. (And that Gun is wearing his couple pajamas, aw.)
Gun shies away when Mi-young asks if she can meet him regarding the painting, making up some excuse that he can’t meet her face to face because his “woman’s skin” is all broken out and unpresentable, ha. Mi-young, as always, is understanding.
But she still hopes to trade the painting he bought with one she promises to make from scratch, and in an effort to move him, she asks if he has a child—since out of all the paintings, he chose the one with a child as the subject.
“Yes, I do,” Gun replies to her question with a faraway look in his eyes. “A very pretty child.” Oof, my heart. It’s even worse when Mi-young says she’d like to meet his child, only for Gun to reply with a faraway look and a sigh that it would be amazing if they could. This is so, so sad. Beautiful, but sad.
As the text conversation ends, Gun turns in his bed like he’s looking at her and wishes her good night. The sad reality is that they’re both sleeping alone on the same sides of the bed they used to occupy when sleeping together, with Mi-young bravely fighting back the urge to cry.
Manager Tak gives Gun a good scolding for going off on a “business trip” without him, only for the tables to turn when he smells something fishy in the way Gun’s acting. Ah, so he’s the one who told Gun about Mi-young’s exhibition, and when he asks Gun whether he went, Gun tries hiding under his desk. Hah.
Mi-young gives Daniel moral support as he fidgets in nervousness while waiting to meet his sister. The private investigator brings a girl through the door who immediately throws herself into Daniel’s arms, crying, “Oppa!” Daniel’s eyes fill with tears as he tentatively returns her embrace. Has he finally found her?
The private investigator leaves once he’s satisfied that he’s reunited the right pair this time—all the DNA seems to match, and she has a scar on her back matching the description of Daniel’s sister. But the “sister” in question seems mightily discomfited by Mi-young’s presence… something tells me she’s got a hidden agenda.
When her students complain about being too tired to keep practicing, Se-ra proves that she’s not the hard-nosed teacher you’d think she would be by taking the girls out for ice cream. She gets the kind she once got with Gun, and sighs over a picture of them together, wishing he’d contact her once in a while.
Drinking out of a coffee cup with a baby drawn on brings back painful memories of the moment when Keddongie’s Cup shattered forever. Luckily, Daniel’s arrival shakes Mi-young out of her sad reverie, and his attention is drawn to drawing of a mother and child she’s making for Young-ja/Gun, so that she can get her original back in return.
As for Daniel, he’s just happy to have his sister back. Mi-young accepts his invitation for the three of them to go out to eat tomorrow before lightly protesting when Daniel insists it’s his right to watch her draw. She folds and plays along—after all, he is her teacher.
The painting is delivered to Gun, who marvels as he says to himself that this is what Keddongie would have looked like if she/he had ever been born. “Hi, Keddongie,” he addresses the picture. So sad.
Mi-young then texts him to say she’ll be returning to France soon, which only serves to make Gun upset since he wanted her to stay longer. He doesn’t return her text, leaving Mi-young wondering if he/Young-ja is upset. But as she gives up her seat to a new mother on the bus, she gets a call for an important company meeting.
Cut to: Gun having an important company meeting with Manager Tak and Yong about how to improve their image to increase sales among younger women.
They suggest using a prominent female artist to give their brand a revamp, but Yong’s push for Ellie Kim/Mi-young is shot down by Gun immediately on the basis that she’s not as popular domestically as she is internationally. Manager Tak was prepared for this and provides research to the contrary, leaving Gun with a conundrum—he knows they shouldn’t meet again, even if he wants to…
After Mi-young’s family tries all they can to convince her to stay and work in Korea instead of returning to France, she’s called away for a meeting with Yong. He makes it seem like they’re just catching up after a long separation, until he ushers someone else over: Gun.
Gun is just as surprised as Mi-young is by Yong’s matchmaking, even though Yong defends his actions as being for the company—it’s not right for Gun to reject Mi-young as an artist just because of their personal issues. He has no shame in leaving the two of them alone with no other avenue but to speak to each other.
She doesn’t seem keen on having a long conversation with Gun, since she cuts him off mid-explanation about the “misunderstanding” from the other night by saying that there was no misunderstanding. He was drunk and banging on her door, and while she could’ve acted like she didn’t know him, she didn’t. End of story.
Gun tries making small talk, only to get terse replies in return. When Mi-young asks if he’s been healthy, he responds that he has, which prompts her to politely say she’s relieved before she gets up to leave. But Gun stops her in an effort to have her hear him out on their possible collaboration.
She tries using the excuse that she’s too expensive (which of course doesn’t matter to him), before she decides on honesty: “And I think it’s best we don’t see each other in any way. I’m no longer the Kim Mi-young you knew back then. Just like how you’re not the Gunnie you were to me back then. Even if we can’t do anything about the past, let’s not make things uncomfortable for either of us here on out.”
Gun’s reply is to quickly backpedal. “You must be mistaken, Kim Mi-young. I’m not at all interested in you. At all. Well, at one time… at one time, I had hoped we could live happily together. But the thought of crossing paths and starting all over again? Don’t… don’t you worry about that!” Good thing he’s a CEO and not an actor, because he ain’t foolin’ nobody.
He looks uncomfortable and more than a little sad after she leaves, even as he notes to himself that she’s changed a lot. Then his face scrunches when the coffee he drinks isn’t sweet, harkening back to Mi-young’s adage about how people who like sweet things are people who want to be happy as Mi-young tries to convince herself that what she did and said was right.
Mi-young overhears Daniel’s “sister” making plans with the private investigator who found her—it turns out she’s a fake, and has been working with the private investigator to fool Daniel in order to tap into his considerable wealth.
It must be hard for her when she shares a meal with Daniel and Not Mi-young, since Daniel can’t stop talking about how happy he is to be with the two Mi-young’s he loves the most.
Even though Daniel buys Not Mi-young’s story about how she wants to get married but has no money (a ploy to get him to pay for everything), Mi-young confronts her on her lies when Daniel leaves the table. Not Mi-young is put in a bind when Mi-young gently but firmly asks if she’d be willing to re-do the DNA test, since both of them know she’d fail.
Mi-young tries to talk reason into the girl by explaining how long Daniel has been searching for his sister, and how he’s not the kind of person she’ll let be fooled or hurt so easily.
When Not Mi-young fights back with excuses, Mi-young tells her she’d be better off mugging Daniel at knifepoint. “Do you know what’s the worst thing in this world is? Manipulating someone’s sincerity. That’s something one person should never do to another person.”
Daniel ends up overhearing the truth with wide, disbelieving eyes as Not Mi-young is forced to turn tail and run. Needless to say, he’s devastated, as he tells Mi-young at the playground he frequents whenever he’s thinking of his sister. It was the last time they saw each other as children, and all because a young Daniel left to get his sister ice cream.
He carries that guilt to this day, firmly believing that he wouldn’t have lost his sister if he hadn’t left her then. Mi-young comforts him by putting her hand over his as she stresses that it wasn’t his fault, “You were at an age where you deserved someone’s love and care. That child who thought everything was his fault… please forgive him now.”
Daniel thanks her sincerely with tears in his eyes, but doesn’t cheer up when Mi-young offers to be his sister for the day, because he’s ready to stop searching for her—he wants to believe she’s living well somewhere and live his own life. But he looks pointedly at Mi-young when he says, “I want to make a real family of my own.”
Gun texts Mi-young (as Young-ja, of course), when she’s got a lot on her mind—Daniel wants to talk to her about something, and she seems to know what it’s about. Gun encourages her to open up using the excuse that he/she’s her number one fan and that they’re both women. Haha.
Mi-young, representing herself in text form, joins Gun at his house as she admits she’s worried that someone will confess his feelings soon, since he’d already told her he wanted to make a family. Gun is completely taken aback, but keeps it all in even as he pelts her with questions: Does this mean “that person” is going to propose? How does she feel about it?
He is fuh-reaking out about this, and it’s hilarious when Mi-young answers his question by saying, “In the past three years, I thought that if I were to make another family with someone, it would be with that person.” Gun deflates.
But when she says that she’s filled with conflicting thoughts now, Gun pumps his fists in relief and happiness. “The thing about decisions is, you have to spend a lot of time and think them over or else you’ll be seen as an easy woman,” Gun advises her through text. He goes on to say how marriage isn’t a joke and she can’t rush into things lest she be seen as an easy woman—you’d almost think Gun was trying to talk her out of it.
It’s really cute how he gets to move around Mi-young while he goes into this long, drawn-out explanation about decisions, because they’re both talking to each other without actually seeing each other. He’s hanging on every second, waiting to know what she’s decided… only for her to shut down the topic.
At least they agree to be on more familiar terms, since Gun calls himself her sunbae and Mi-young asks if she can call Young-ja the more informal “unni.” Ha, and is that a Chuno reference when he’s mulling over the word “unni?” (He and his gang, even though they were men, would say “unni” instead of the more modern “hyung.”)
Yong comes out to ask Gun to reconsider the collaboration with Mi-young, but Gun chases him back inside with his magical freezing powers, while Yong fights back with his magical fire powers. I love how Gun totally gets Yong’s fire powers because “yong” translates to “dragon.”
While Mi-young considers her options when Daniel sends her a text reminder of their date tonight, Gun tries to talk himself out of the way he’s been acting with her while staring at her picture. He knows he shouldn’t be talking to her AT ALL, and knows he should just wish for her happiness… but when she text him, he couldn’t grab his phone any faster.
In her text, Mi-young tells him that she’s leaving Korea tomorrow and won’t be able to meet him before she leaves—but she hopes he’ll take care of the painting. Gun can’t just let her leave, and gets her to disclose her current location with the promise that he’ll return her painting.
He speeds to the theater with the painting in the passenger seat while Mi-young goes inside to meet Daniel. Gun stops to think for only the briefest of moments before jumping out of the car…
…While inside, Mi-young sits in the empty theater as Daniel lights up the projector. He starts making her a picture from scratch using only sand, depicting a man and a woman holding hands on a hilltop. As he morphs and changes the picture to tell their story, we hear it in voiceover:
“A lonely man who lost his little sister met a lonely woman who lost her baby. Those two people decided to share in that loneliness together. Amazingly, even though it was hard bearing it alone, it wasn’t hard at all bearing it together. Like that, those two people will not tire until the end. They’ll build a strong house and live happily ever after.”
Mi-young’s eyes fill with unshed tears as she smiles. Daniel pulls a bouquet of flowers from the podium as he approaches her, both of them unaware Gun has been in the theater, watching everything.
Daniel kneels in front of Mi-young as he offers the flowers: “Mi-young… Will you become my real family?”
COMMENTS
It’s about time! Not that I’d be crazy enough to root for the second lead in a show where the outcome is literally written in the title, but Daniel’s been sitting on ice long enough. His time to shine was long overdue, not necessarily because he’s earned it (he’s great on paper, don’t get me wrong), but because he himself admitted that his role in Mi-young’s life has shifted. He no longer has to protect or save her from Gun, so as a character more so than a person, he had to adapt to survive.
Even as a kindly neighborhood oppa, Daniel was just sort of there, and aside from whisking Mi-young away to France to help her start a new life, I’m fairly convinced Mi-young could’ve weathered all the pain that came her way without him, just because she’s awesome like that. But I admit to being a little confused when it came to Daniel before The Accident, since he’d said he was going to be braver when it came to his feelings for Mi-young… and then he wasn’t. Which is okay, since we all would’ve hated him if he forced his feelings on Mi-young when she was in no place to accept them. And even now, after she’s had time move on and get to know Daniel more, her hesitation says a lot about how she feels. Oooorrr does it? We’ll find out next week, that’s for sure.
What’s interesting now about the changed dynamic when it comes to Gun and Mi-young’s not-a-relationship is that even though Mi-young might have questioned herself after telling Gun she never wanted to see him again, and even if she has lingering feelings for him, she’s the one who—at least on paper—has moved on. Gun has been the one keeping tabs on her over the years, he’s been the one following her around town and acting chummy with her mom, and now he’s resorted to using a false identity just to be able to talk to her. I wonder if Mi-young would have felt much of anything going back to France and severing all possible lines of communication with Gun again. Then again, what other options did he give her?
In that sense, I’m not quite sure what’s changed in these three years to bring Gun back from the brink, even though I’m happy as a clam to see him back to his old antics again. If it’s just a matter of him changing his mind about death, it kind of makes the whole rigmarole of him pushing her away moot, doesn’t it? There’s always the option that Gun, who’s proven himself to be quite the hypochondriac, convinced himself he had his family’s full-blown genetic disease even if he wasn’t sure. But if that’s the case and he’s just choosing to take things day by day, then nothing’s actually changed as far as the possibility of him succumbing to the illness in the future. Compared to that, Daniel’s third wheel interference is nothing—we’ve seen what Gun can do when he sets his mind to something.
But of course there’s the flip side to that, since Gun seems to be unable to control himself when it comes to being in the same city as his ex(?)-wife. I love that about him, even if I’m still making peace with his actions leading up to and following the loss of Keddongie. The ball is firmly in his court now, and has been ever since he pushed Mi-young away. Once he realizes that life doesn’t have to be filled with miserably cold showers and self-induced loneliness, the world will be his escargot. Go get ‘er, Gun—or at least hurry up and get back in line.

Good question, they may not even be legally divorced if Gun never filed the divorce papers. Something tells me he didn't even read the document she signed, if he did, he would realize that the copy she signed wasn't what he asked his lawyer to draft and that would lead to a whole bunch of explanations re: Se ra.

I enjoy their texting scenes, too. I hope, though, when MY finds out that it's Gun that she's been texting, she doesn't think that he's been playing her. I hope she realizes that the reason why she's been so comfortable talking about her personal life with a complete stranger is because it's him.
Also, is it me, or is Jang Hyuk looking hotter? Lighting maybe?

Plus him telling her he is still not interested is kinda shooting yourself in the foot. Way to go Romeo! lol Fortunately for him, Daniel seem to have no game. Three years with Mi Young (in Paris of all places) with nothing to show for it. The force is weak with that one!

When Gun said he had no interest in her that frustrated me, too but I understand why he did it. Save face much?
And Daniel... I can only shake my head. He's like a savory looking dinner but once you taste it you realize something's missing. You can't put your finger on what, but you know it's missin' some flavor...

I think that the 'no game' aspect of Daniel's character is intentional. It's what keeps us rooting so strongly for the OTP, even though both are making colossal mistakes with each other.
When I think about it, for a relationship to sizzle I want to see that they need each other. And not just situationally. What I want to see is that they need each other on a grander scale, to balance out each others' strengths/weaknesses. It both creates and resolves tension; and sets the stage for character growth. This makes them interesting to watch.
I can't see anything long term between them because Daniel and MY are basically the male/female versions of each other. They're both sweet, understated, stable and grounding personalities. To me, that's why they feel flat as a couple. It was more interesting to watch her paired with a fiery, demonstrative, and spontaneous personality.
If they hadn't laid so much groundwork for SR being Daniel's sister (the scar, the adoptive mother, and this week the reason for only eating ice cream in a cone) I'd say she'd be the interesting one to see him with. Particularly if she didn't give up her career on the international ballet circuit. But I suppose thinking that is a whole lot of woulda, coulda, shoulda. ;-)

Fantastic super speedy recap! I wondered about the "unni" beat so thank you for the clarification.
Another amazing pair of episodes 13 and 14, with more brilliant storytelling from JH and JNR. I laughed, I wept, I sighed and smiled occasionally. Every time either of them appears on screen all the primary get a little brighter; when they appear together its all sizzle-n-hum!
I deeply empathize with Geon in his self-imposed solitude... He wants to leave Mi Young alone and let her be, but although three years have passed and Dr. Moon has stabilized his notoriously precarious health issues, he clearly cannot live without her...

I actually think, if it doesn't falter in the remaining espisodes, FTYU will become one of the Kdrama classics- those you will re-watch and re-watch in the years to come.
Everything from the writing, directing, acting, to the music all combined to make drama-watching a great joy again. I couldn't remember the last drama that made me so engrossed in the last few years. It just shows using old drama tropes will still make a great drama if done right!
I also like they are taking the time in the last two episodes to trawl through the very complex feelings of both LG and KMY instead of taking a fast food approach of LG chasing her crazily. The texting thus provides the magical touch for a sincere dialogue at least from KMY as her outlet for thoughts she hasn't shared with others for three years. I hope this device would go on for a little while for LG to fully recognize what's on her mind.
Lastly, I couldn't imagine the drama will be as enchanting if without the two Jiangs. A real showcase of their talents especially to the new and younger drama watchers.

"fiat voluntas audientiae!"
If I learned anything from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," it was that saying something in Latin imbued it with a certain inexorable power, so here's to hoping that "the will of the audience be done" as you describe EPYC. :-)
I, too, like the deliberate pacing of the last two epis and put my faith in the FTLY to keep delivering.

I totally agree!
Thus far the whole drama has been excellently produced. The attention to details and whether its hair, dressing, props, characterization ~ ESP characters ~ beautifully fleshed out.
Except I don't quite get why DP seems abit one sided. We've seen Sera's range of emotions but DP so far? It's quite bland. All self control.
But yes. Am loooking forward to the end so I can watch it from the beginning ^^
That said. Anyone knows where the beautiful red-cream sweater that Gun was wearing at the garden texting scene came from?????

Thank you, Tricia. I'm glad to know that you enjoyed it.
I had a lot of fun writing it and look forward to dedicating a piece to the lighter side of FTLY... that is, of course, once my heartache eases and my tears stop blurring my vision with every new obstacle in out lovers' journey back to each other.
Hope springs eternal! (yeah, I know it's a comedy, therefore destined for a happy ending, but this me living in the moment. Oh, the feels!)

Curioser, I finally got a chance to read some of your writeup and your comments in the previous posts and I really appreciate your take on Gun's 'noble idiocy'. Sometimes, as the audience, we may be doing the most cliched thing by responding to a situation in a drama based purely on what we're expected to feel about certain tropes, denying ourselves of other possibilities. We box situations into categories and begin whining. Perhaps even missing the meaning the writers wanted to convey in the process.
I love this show and have found its characters (at least the main leads) to be more fleshed out and relatable than others. And despite my initial disappointment with Gun's decision, I feel like FTLY has handled what happened after that exceptionally well. In fact, the show has been phenomenal in taking what we consider as cliches, raising them above their regular use, and churning something heartfelt. FTLY reminds us the reason why a cliche became one in the first place. Quality. Again and again it has shown that it is one of the most well crafted shows. And the production was blessed to have ended up with two actors with such superior showmanship. They instil magic into every scene they are in.
So I'm not going to complain about Gun's behaviour in isolation. There were many things achingly beautiful about it. It's just that the show has been close to perfect in every regard. Save for their choice of disease. Especially if we zoom out, take a look at the larger picture. There's this nagging feeling that the way the disease has been developed in the story will not add up to sustain the supreme quality this show has been about. It's a romantic comedy, it's 20 episodes long. It has a certain destination to reach by the end. And I'm worried about how it will perfectly tie a neat bow around itself by then. That's all.
Having said this, FTLY has continued to handle all criticism/doubt that we've thrown its way by subverting our expectations and doing something absolutely brilliant in its stead. Right now, I'm plagued by the realisation that the disease and the entire setup may have been better suited for a melodrama, and that it might put too heavy a burden on the story. I don't want there to be unconvincing, abrupt changes of heart. It's not in the character of the show.
Of course, the show hasn't disappointed so far. And if they can manoeuvre through this delicate subject well, I will be even happier than if they'd skipped Huntington's. But right now it does look a bit tricky.
So what I think I'm saying is that the problem for me, and for many others, is not Gun's noble idiocy or pragmatic altruism, but the show's decision to follow the Huntington's storyline in the first place. Doesn't feel like a wise choice, that's all.
Love everything about the show. And above Gun and Mi-young, it is the show that I'm rooting for.

The thing I'm holding out hope for is that Gun doesn't have the disease.
In real life, many people with the genetic possibility of having Huntingtons don't get tested. With Huntington's, if your parent has the disease there's a 50% chance you'll be a carrier. And if you have the gene, there's a 100% chance you'll die of it. And if you have it here's nothing you can do to delay or cure it. So many people choose to live their lives not knowing if they're a carrier; instead choosing to deal with it if and when it emerges.
Gun keeps referring to Dr. Octopus' 'squid ink'. Hoping that means the doctor is keeping him in the dark about something. That, or Gun needs to get his knowledge of marine invertebrates straightened out.

@jhu and Gidget - reading your comments makes me realize something: while it is clear that the disease has been diagnosed and expressed in previous Lee generations, FTLY has not yet made it clear that Geon actually inherited the gene itself, nor yet whether he ever actually got the test to check for the gene marker.
Maybe if they can clear that up, the world can start to set itself aright again for our estranged lovers.

Hi kirsten,
Thank you for visiting and for taking the time to take it all in. I am especially happy to know that you enjoyed the family tree. The showmakers' sense of visual humor is just plain inspired and, like you said, Jang Hyuk just merges acting and modeling on a whole new level. Honestly, to be able to act so well even in still photography that your face ever-so-casually becomes that of 8 different people with clearly distinct personalities! Brilliant!
I had a really good time integrating the array of images into the post and, grave though the subject was, just cracked up when I got to the section about Confucian ethics and the ancestor next in line was, serendipitously, the bespectacled Confucian scholar!

Being nitpicky here but I was bothered about the voiceover during the proposal. Since Daniel wasn't talking while doing the sand art, then that means he might have recorded his voice... Which is just iffy. If it was just a voiceover, then that means he did the sand art in silence... Which takes away most of the wow factor for me.

I love the text/talking scenes! They are so intimate, heartbreaking, and sweet. But I do worry about what will happen when MY finds out that Gun has been lying to her...remember when she said to fake Mi-Young that the worse thing to do is use someone's sincerity against them? I'm afraid that it will bode poorly for Gun since he basically is pretending to be someone else in order to hear her innermost thoughts. As much as I love that it gives them a chance to communicate (as well as the lovely way it's shot), it still makes me uncomfortable. Yes, he's desperate to be around her, but it feels like a betrayal of sorts.
As for Daniel and MY, this week it seems like she's more into him than last week. She was more physically affectionate with him and her expressions during his proposal looked like she was genuinely moved. Does that mean she'll accept???
I love how Yong is the one who is trying to get MY and Gun back together. Too cute.
Lastly, is it me or does Gun look slimmer with his new hairdo? His new look is growing on me, even though I think I slightly prefer the old one.

About the episode, I thought this one was chock-a-block with precious moments. It hit all the right emotional notes for me, while nudging the story forward.
Daniel's most potent weapon might just be his impeccable timing. The guy just finds himself in the right places at the right time when it comes to Mi-young. And just when I was about to relegate him to the large pile of perfectly staid, boring second leads, he came in and (almost! Phew.) made me jump ship too. His (beautiful) proposal made me realise this- him meeting Mi-young was just as fated as her meeting Gun was, wasn't it? It ties in nicely with the whole theme of fatalism in this show, just that Daniel's fate with Mi-young is not meant to be the way he thinks it is. The ice-cream connection almost confirms for me who his sister is, and I hope that loop will be discovered soon.
And Gunnie, oh. You've brought this upon yourself, darling. I agree with everything Heads said in the comments section about him- while he kept vacillating between his 'to talk or not to talk' positions, he really cannot control himself when it comes to Mi-young anymore, the longing and the loneliness seems to be taking its toll. And if this proposal is the slap in the face he needs to wake up and take charge of his life, then so be it. That said, however, I'm pretty sure he's going to walk out of that door like a wuss in the next episode, and then agonize about it later. In that case, I hope someone clubs him on the head. Hard. Just sayin'.
Mi-young, does she think Gun "manipulated her sincerity" by lying to her about his amnesia in order to get rid of her? Poor, poor thing. No wonder she wants to run away from him. I loved that little moment in the cab, where she tries to convince herself she did the right thing by walking out on Gun. Who, incidentally, couldn't even look at her straight in the eyes- he felt so guilty. And the text conversations. Gosh, these two hurt my heart.
All that said, can I just pinch the Dragon's cheeks for his adorable matchmaking efforts? The entire universe wants you together, you two. Go Gunnie, go!!!

Hello Boxed-in. There you go again...:)
I'm so far inside Team Gun that I can't even look at Daniel without the extreme and petty bias that Gun himself is filled with. Daniel may be a perfect man, but his perfection may have relevance only in an alternate universe. What matters is that Gunnie and Mi-young are perfect for each other, and like you have rightly said, everybody except the two second leads are on board their ship. Everybody in the universe wants them together indeed.
So anyway, I'm trying my best to put our petty rivalry aside and understand Daniel and figure out if there's a way for me to sympathise with this guy. And the more I think about it, the more I feel like he may perhaps deserve sympathy after all. To love a woman who doesn't love you back is bad enough, but to propose to the same woman feels like a whole lot of tragedy heaped on Daniel's plate. I mean, he clearly knows Mi-young's love is not for him. And the entire proposal is somewhat overshadowed by the idea of 'Look at two broken, lonely people. Let's get together, create a family and try to heal ourselves.' To me, that does not feel cute or romantic in the least. It basically says, neither of us are going to get what we want - you want Gunnie and I want you to love me - but I guess we should settle for a compromise. Let's try to make do with what we have.
Realistically speaking, I think it is just heartbreaking proposing to a woman who may never love you. It doesn't matter how much sheen or swagger you carry, it doesn't matter how much goodness you have, and it doesn't matter how much you idolise and respect the woman. Sometimes, all that respect means you put her on a pedestal, and that raw human intimacy (just compare the first scene of the episode with the last) which may make another person more accessible to you is entirely missing. That intimacy (which Gun and Mi-young totally have) can outshine all the glamour, charm or goodness that Daniel is worth. To a woman like Mi-young, the first scene might have made a bigger personal impact? I mean, she's not one to be swept off her feet. She's not one to take up a ready-made package of happiness. She's one that settles into a crazy, unlikely, challenging relationship and manages to co-create happiness in spite of all the odds against her.
Now, looking at it from Gun's perspective, he abandoned her to secure some form of happiness for her. Again and again, Mi-young keeps revealing to Gun that the time she spent with him were her best. Today's confession to the she-painting-thief version of Gun said just as much. For Gun, to bear witness to a proposal another man is making to Mi-young is obviously painful. But the more I think about it, I wonder if the more painful thing might be watching her settle into what is offered as a compromise - not at all the happiness he'd hoped for her. From that perspective, he might even start feeling a little sorry for Daniel, partner in the compromise pact...

Whoops. Didn't know I'd rambled so much. Here's the remainder...
So he may walk away indeed. And agonise over it. But not for long. Cause that happy end is still in the works, right?
This show is pretty much perfect, save for the disease - its achilles heel. Everything about this show is so convincing and powerful, I hope the writers have some intelligent idea about how to serve past it - or use it - to provide us with a satisfactory conclusion. We want our two together in the end, but we also want to weep over how poignant and meaningful and powerful and winning the process was. Show, we want you to please our hearts as well as our minds. Right?

To MY, she has been pushed away by Gun several times. Just like the cafe scene, Gun said, she does not need to worry about them starting over. To MY, Daniel is next better choice so she might say YES to this proposal. For her Gun has nothing to offer though as much she loved him or still love him.
Pain of thinking what is next....we can only speculate.

I like Daniel. He has an interesting background himself, and this episode clearly established that he has been not only MY's friend, but also her mentor these three years. All the while knowing that this woman is in love with someone else. Now you could call it stupidity on his part, or you could look at his devotion and loyalty. In fact I didn't think his proposal was a 'grand gesture' intending to sweep her off her feet either. It was just a beautiful, artistic way of a good friend asking her if she is willing to make a new beginning with him, and try to make a family they both long for.
MY's feelings were clear in her text conversation with she-painting-thief Gun (LOL! @jhu) when she said that Daniel was the only one she would consider starting a family with. That's just the problem. This show is about fate ultimately re-uniting broken families (Gun-Miyoung, Daniel and his sister), rather than making new ones as such. Like you said, there was no mention of love in Daniel's proposal, which gives me hope that Mi-young, being the kind but sincere soul she is, might just say no to him after all, because she feels he deserves the chance to be loved in a relationship too.
About that Achilles heel you talked about, I have promised myself not to think about it, because it worries me. On the one hand, I do not want its shadow on Gun his whole life, and on the other I don't want a lame cop-out (doctor's mistake/miracle treatment/divine intervention) either. It is understandable that Mi-young might forgive him if she learns the complete truth some day, but how is Gun ever going to pursue her if his disease-induced guilt never goes away? Whattay bind they've gotten themselves into. Writers, couldn't you have given Gun a more...take-out-able disease or something?

August 15, 2014 at 8:30 AM
@ Boxed-in, re Daniel, I think his background is perhaps the most redeeming things about him. So why not just stick to that? Let that be the focus with his character. I see so much more potential in a strong friendship between Mi-young and the Pitt. In fact, I would love for them to be friends. They would be so good at it. There was that scene before the fake sister turned up, where it's Mi-young who takes nervous Daniel's hand to comfort and support him. I think that's the role in which she is most comfortable with him. Otherwise, she does a noticeable squirm every time he touches her. Yes Uncalled For Back Hug, I'm talking to you!
Daniel's finding lost family arch could actually pull at our heart strings if done the right way. For that, several things need to fall into place. Firstly, because the show by default makes us so Mi-young- and Gun-ccentric, both Daniel and Sera need to come off as more likeable in how they relate to the mains. Daniel is good to Mi-young, but they are so polite to each other, I'm afraid they'll just end up as a Stepford couple.
Secondly, I feel like there also needs to be a stronger thematic connection in their stories. Fate's a big theme, so is family. Though it has been explicitly stated that both Daniel and Mi-young have lost cherished ones in their family, it still feels like it's something told rather than shown. Losing your baby can mean insurmountable anguish. But there is another kind of equally terrible anguish in knowing your long lost sister may be alive somewhere, but not being able to find her. And so I'm left with my brain trying to convince itself that yes, the two should logically be able to connect over this, and yet, my heart doesn't feel it. There's something that feels somewhat lacking. Wish the story could explore that. Wish there could be some character growth in that regard.
Somebody pointed out earlier that even though he's been around Mi-young for 3 years, it looks like she hasn't really needed him to heal herself. Like, they begin with that point of connection, and find that there are things they can like in each other, but others that they perhaps can't relate to as well or even dislike in each other? Would make for a much more balanced and realistic relationship. Right now Daniel is such a blanket - I don't even know how to explain it. Blanket? Mask? Space suit? Condom? He'll just envelop all of Mi-young, hoping that will be enough to protect her, but not in this unconditional way. It feels more like an I-don't-get-you-but-I-really-want-to-love-you sort of way. But he seems to have little clue about fulfilling her needs and making her truly happy. He hopes his blanket will cover that up for him? Ugh, the more I talk about Daniel, the more I feel sorry for him.
Thirdly, to grant Daniel some space, he's actually completely oblivious to Gunnie's side of the story. He's only seen Mi-young bear the brunt of all the drama Gun throws her way, and if I really...

August 15, 2014 at 8:33 AM
...and if I really liked a person and saw them being treating like that, then I'd probably harbor intensely negative feelings towards them too. If he actually got a chance to get to know Gun and his feelings better, and could actually do something in bringing the couple together. That's when his presence would truly add meaning to the show, and that's when I would love him without refrain. For that, Gun and Daniel need to stop having confrontations. Start with a conversation for a change, you two. It could lead to something good.

Boxed -
so like the problem with D Pitt is that he's not realistic.
He's not perfect (by any stretch of the imagination), but he comes with no real issues in life (other than a missing sister, but that's soon to be resolved too). Perhaps you could say that his devotion to KMY is an issue, but taken apart from KMY, D Pitt is just.... fake. There's not a real person who is like that.
Who lives life without issues? Life is something to be battled, to be struggled against, to fight and fight some more.
We all live our lives like that. We battle with health, love, jobs, money, school, family, friends, parents, children, siblings, enemies, frenemies, teachers, students, credit cards, loans, car payments, mortgage payments, tuition payments, everything and everybody.
We fight to stay relevant, we fight to stay alive, we fight for what we want, what we shouldn't have, what we should have.
If you dislike the word "fight," another way to look at it is that we are forced to live for our existence. And living means dealing with issues of all kinds.
D Pitt has like two issues in life - his missing sister, and his newly found devotion to KMY. Before KMY, he was Mr. One-Note ("I'll see you guys soon to see if my sister returned to the orphanage, see ya next week.")
I think I would like D Pitt more if he was written as a real character rather than a foil for Gunnie.

@Jhu I totally am biased towards Gun as well >.< & @Boxed_In - You seriously raise some good points :)
Reading both of your comments, I can totally see each of your perspectives and you both raise some really good points. From what I've seen so far, I highly doubt that Mi Young would accept Daniel's proposal, and this is quite evident through how she proceeds in visiting the theatre, despite the fact that she knows what was going to come. It's as though, she had already prepared in her mind, what to say once he proposes. Her facial expression tells all! It was written all over her face, that she doesn't want to marry him but on the flipside does not want to hurt him either. However, Mi Young's profound experiences of love would probably compel her to reject the marriage, as she would want Daniel to tie the knot with someone who loves him back, just as much as he would love them.
As for Gun, I really hope that he realises how much better it would be for him to reveal his miseries to Mi Young, because in the end he would only be hurting her even more if she were to find out that he had sacrificed himself for her happiness. I think at this stage, Gun should begin to pursue Mi Young, because they are destined to be each other's counterparts for and he is the shoulder she needs to lean on the most, after losing their child because Daniel could never understand that. That's why the two leads were so captivated by the 'missing' painting and it is the force that holds them together. Anyhow, Mi Young has dealt with all kinds of pain and I believe that she would be able to deal with Gun's illness, as she had withheld the heartache of losing her father - the most precious person in the most delicate phase of her life, her childhood.
It also doesn't seem logical for Gun to die, because MY has been through enough i.e. losing a child is a really big sorrow! I'm really wondering what the writers have in store with Huntingdon's Disease lurking in the dark corner. But hopefully, the strings will all be tied neatly and we will see a new Kendonggie with mumma MY and mr. scary laugh Gun together as one happy family :)

"he is the shoulder she needs to lean on the most, after losing their child because Daniel could never understand that" EXACCCCTTTLLY!
There are so many people within the show rooting for our snail couple. Why doesn't anybody say this to Gunnie's face? That's what he needs to hear. Not false promises like how Daniel is going to keep Mi-young happy.
The ominous bug has bit me and I feel like she will say yes to Daniel though. Which is fine I guess, as far as keeping the conflict alive for a couple more episodes is concerned. I really miss Kedonggie though. The couple will reunite someday, but am just devastated knowing Kedonggie will never be part of the happy family. Cruelty for the sake of propelling plot. Sheesh.
I'm curious as to why she-painting-thief said she had a child and that s/he was alive? I thought the obvious answer would have been that her kid had died too. I wonder why they decided to do that? Does it have any larger significance?

I totally agree with you. I think Daniel just transfers his love for his sister to MY. From the beginning, he helped MY because it will ease his pain for leaving his sister alone and lost her. Even now, he propose is more like he just want to take care of MY because she is alone as like he is. I see the love between them is a brother and sister love not a romance.

Jhu, the she-painting-thief says he has a child because in his mind, he does. He has kept Keddongie alive in his life, albeit hidden from everyone. And Mi-young is the only one he will (sorta) admit it to. That man has kept everything he ever bought for his child, he talks to him...it reminds of how Mi-young used to talk to the foetus. When he said he has a child, and it would be nice if Mi-young could meet him/her, with that wistful note in his voice....oof. Killed me.
And I totally agree that Gunnie needs a pep talk. I'll even accept a long overdue thrashing from Grandma. Someone needs to tell him that he cannot decide who Mi-young will or will not be happy with. That's solely her prerogative. So no point in depriving himself of what he wants so much. Really, these heroes in the dramas take protective and selfless to whole new obnoxious levels sometimes.
I still think Mi-young will refuse Daniel's matrimonial offer. Her sense of obligation and friendly liking towards him cannot be greater than her innate sincerity and wisdom, and we've gotten enough indications that she's not really into him, not the way he is. And Mi-young has always been very honest about her feelings, so...

I was cringing through the entire proposal because while it was beautifully done, the content had nothing to do with love. It also felt so sudden, considering that they have never kissed, to be proposing marraige to someone that has never shown romantic inclinations towards him. It came across to me as "I'm so desperate to have someone to love in my life, and I am tired of trying to find my sister, so could you fill the void please?" I felt embarassed for him.
I think that Daniel does love her, but not in the way that leads to a good marraige. I think that he cherishes her, and adores her, and feels very close to her because he has shared so many of the important times of her life. But if he had already found his sister, I don't think that he would have proposed. He might have confessed his feelings, and asked her to date him, but I don't think that he would ask Mi-young to become his "family".
The whole scene made me sad, and I believe that she will take the opportunity to express her true feelings to him. I hope that she points out although she does love him (which she does, but in a different way than he loves her), that the faux-sister role is the only one that she is comfortable playing. I hope that she is brutally honest, and that she gets him to think beyond a marraige relationship with her.
And then, when his heart is broken, I will fix it for him. HA!

I agree with you about DPitt wanting her as family/sister rather than lover/significant other, DeeCee. Which will make her redundant once he reunites with Sera. Which will be perfect for us since that means he will stop meddling with our heavenly couple! Can't wait!
And I love love love that the next episode airs today, and look at us, still at it with the comments. This is the most insane drama lovin' I've ever done. FTLY makes my world go round at the moment. Will be the death of me, this drama. Sigggghhhhhh......

this episode really life on the rails of the train tracks. i mean, really, we've/i've wait for so long to daniel to show the full intensity of his emotions for mi-young (ellie! i love this english name) and he doesn't disappoint with the display. i just wish it wasn't six episodes to late. well it's not really to late but still why didn't he take the chance during the gap period while they were in france. it kind of makes me sad that it seems like mi-young hasn't fully realised that he could be a contender for heart, but i'm guess she will now. does anyone else think that he'd played the noble idiot role better than mi-young and gun when they had their moments of romantic idiocy.
i hope gun speaks up before she has a chance to speak but i'm think that he'll probably listen to her answer or leave before can and just leave the picture there for her. i really wish he had said all the things he had practiced in the mirror and car rather than holding this tongue but it's nice to see the flip in role between him and mi-young from when she would coach herself about her feelings/action towards him. this drama really is one of the best i've seen late and its great to see the character evolution through the series.
is anyone else rooting for ji-yeon and yong & tak and mi-young sister to become official couples. ( ゚ヮ゚)

i already read about how great daniel's proposal is, but still got blown away watching the sweetness and sincerity of the whole thing. i'm glad that the writers made him an equally worthy man, as gun is. and as much as i am itching to have gun and mi young get back together again, i'm glad to have my sympathies diverted. i really felt that mi young wouldn't be making a bad choice by accepting daniel.
as for gun, i don't think his witnessing the proposal would spur him to pursue mi young once again. you're right, then what's the point of his sacrifice 3 years ago..? i feel that it would be up to mi young to change his mind.. regardless of whether she accepts daniel now or not, once she learns about gun's possible illness and that being the reason why he keeps on pushing her away, i think she would stick herself to gun's side like a superglue. after losing kedongie, she loved him enough to ask him if they can start over. i think that same love would propel her to prove to gun it can't be any harder to stay together than it was to stay apart..

I love the sweet moments Gun and Mi-Young. Though I feel bad that Gun is pretending to be this "female" client since I got a feeling that it would totally backfire later.
As for Daniel's real sister, why do I have this nagging feeling that she's so close, like "Sera-like" close. Maybe because of Sera's Ice Cream moment..?

So this episode somewhat redeemed Daniel's actions in the previous one and I am glad for it. Mi-young might have been reasonably hesistant about the very idea of getting into a new relationship with him (or anyone) but she seems to never have been fully averse to it. Which also means, in conclusion, that Daniel's advances were not out of line and that he shouldn't be accused of being a creep because of them. I mean, unless, of course, you consider someone as creepy who waits three years for a special woman to see his heart.
I understand why this might make some people uncomfortable, but since I am fairly sure that he won't throw a selfish fit about Mi-young finding her happiness at Gun's side, I see no problems and basically couldn't care less. The thing is, Daniel has recognized Mi-young's sweetness and humanity pretty early on and first and foremost treasures her as a person, not just as the woman he wants to marry. I loved his proposal scene, and while I am all for Mi-young and Gun ending up together (because D'AWWW), I am happy that she could inspire such an enduring love in this honest, kind, and caring man who basically only wants to build a home. Hearts in my eyes, hearts everywhere.
I am honestly a bit conflicted about the scenes between Gun and Mi-young. Some of them were heartbreaking, especially how Gun visibly deflated when Mi-young indicated that the continuation of their relationship, any kind of relationship really, would be a total no-go for her or how shaken she appeared to be in the car after that meeting. Some of them were also sweet, even funny, for example the SMS conversations about skin care and that inevitable "unnie" question.
Probably the only thing I did not enjoy about Gun during this whole episode was how he knowingly continued to betray her confidence, even after she rejected him outright. Guilt about initially conning her after this? Understandable. Reluctance to confess his scheme because of that guilt? Hell yeah. Still leading her on, especially by pretending to be a woman and not only that, but a woman WITH a child? Sitting in a corner and weeping. I so hope he can explain himself well and/or show the utmost sincerity because I'm honestly rooting for him, it's just sometimes a little hard to do so. Which is really just a little more eloquent way of saying: ALL THE FEELS.

Ugh, some scenes still brought tears to my eyes. Couldnt help tearing up when Gun said hi to Keddongie, once he received the painting, or when he answered MY that he too has a child.
I loved all the expressions on Gun's face and I noticed his laughters were a bit subdued in ghis episode.
I thought the text messaging scenes and the proposal were really well done.
I'm afraid. Afraid of when FTLY will end and how much I will miss this show!

Sorry Team Gun, but in real life Gun doesn't stand a chance with MY. What woman would forgive Gun for (1) not disclosing at the beginning of her pregnancy that he either had or suspected that he had a very serious genetic disease that could possibly be inherited by the baby, which (2) lead to a chain of events that ultimately resulted in the miscarriage? What woman would forgive Gun for (3) not giving her the opportunity to make her own choice whether she wanted to stand by her man in sickness or in health and instead made that decision for her in complete disregard of her feelings? What woman would forgive Gun for (4) conducting a scam on her with the fake identity to obtain information on her personal feelings?
For Gun to come back into MY's life now, Gun would certainly have the moral and ethical obligation to disclose his genetic condition so that MY could make an informed choice as to her future and the effect on their future children should they choose to have any. But for Gun to make this disclosure, this would be an admission by Gun that he erred by not making the disclosures the first time which essentially would resurrect all of the hurt and pain from 3 years earlier. Maybe in kdramaland there is a special type of woman who can forgive under these circumstances, but not in the real life world that I'm familiar with.

Thanks for the thought provoking question. I do not know any woman in real life who has suffered the same experiences as MY, but I still would like to offer a possible answer: a woman who can forgive all those offenses against her is a woman who is truly in love. I think MY has already demonstrated she can be that forgiving out of true love, when after the miscarriage, she still asked LG if they can stay together. Also, MY know in her heart of hearts, that LG is truly a good and kind person, after living with him for some period of time, albeit short. Isn't there one past episode where MY described LG to Yong as really a good person despite his crazy actions when Yong confided LG intimidated him. So, even if on the surface LG appeared to have lied to MY one to many times, I think MY will eventually realize the real good intentions behind those lies and that they were not malicious at all. Yet, even if MY forgives LG, LG is not exempted from doing what's right and legitimately necessary to win MY's heart again. Yes, LG will really have to have a backup plan, especially now that Daniel has executed his plan A aka proposal. Cheers! :-)

I agree with every point you make -- this drama lost a lot of points with me after about episode 8 when the sweetness kind of overwhelmed the sanity. Nothing about throwing in this potentially devastating genetic disease into the story made sense, and simply made Gun and grandmother look like callous idiots.
I liked everything about this version better than the Taiwanese up until the disease. The Taiwanese version made Gun's character the issue, not his health. He had to grow as a person to deserve his wife. In this version, Gun has always been basically sweet, but eccentric, and he hasn't really changed much in that sense. Also, if he loves her, he must know how much that painting means to her, so he should stop toying with her about it. I guess Gun's behavior over the last 3 episodes, no matter how cute he is with her mom or his secretary, is just annoying me. I wish he would grow up.
I was really hoping for more of a role for Se Ra too since the actress has a lot of natural appeal, and her storyline went nowhere.

It's true. On paper, Gun is definitely the bigger creep in this situation. And, as much as I love him, I still get huffy when I think of all the things he's done to Mi Young. I'm rooting for them, but I can't imagine what he could possibly do to redeem himself in her eyes. I don't think he's ever realistically going to be able to "earn" her back. Especially after his current round of deception. It's like he's not really even learned his lesson yet. The only way it would ever truly work is if MY herself knows everything and CHOOSES to try and put it all behind them and start over. But, this is KDramaland and we all know that Gun is going to orchestrate all kinds of antics and grand gestures that are going to "make" Mi Young fall back in love with him (and I'm going to thoroughly enjoy the shenanigans, even if I have to suspend all disbelief). Go, Gun, GO!

Thank you HeadsNo2 for another wonderful episode recap.
After watching this episode, my first thought was "how can anyone top that kind of proposal?", while feeling sad for LG who had to witness all that. But I believe in LG who tells us in the last episode he always has a backup plan. :-) LG's continuing to have guilty feelings and not wanting to hurt MY, however, I think, will lead him to step back from that proposal scene. He might also leave behind the child painting. But I wish he will not leave it behind because I think that painting will be the one to bring back and reconcile MY to LG...I too wonder about their real marriage status since I don't recall seeing the supposed divorce papers being signed by both parties. Will the lawyer, MY's former boss, hold the key to stopping Daniel's proposal from going any further? And if MY accepts Daniel's proposal, I'm very curious to see how MY's mom will react. I'm sure we all would agree that MY's mom is on LG's side, even though she is also grateful to Daniel's support of MY.
I like the pseudo texting scenes. In lieu of a direct dialogue or interaction between the OTP who at this time cannot or does not want to interact directly, we are given a pseudo texting scenes with meaningful and sometimes (thanks to LG) word exchanges, so we can see that the OTP is still intact and in love even though they verbally deny it.
I realize I'm watching a drama (a make-believe world) but I wonder why so far there's no, at least 1, scene where MY had a heart-to-heart talk with her Mom about the 3 years in Paris, and about her feelings, if any for Daniel. Maybe that will come later, when things escalate, so that MY's mom can defend LG??
Once again, I can't wait for next week's episodes. Cheers everyone! :-)

I have to say, that was a great proposal by Daniel and finally made him a more compelling suitor. I can see that MY is moved, and that she does see Daniel as someone as close as a family member, theres just a complete lack of romantic sparks between them. So all i cay say to Daniel is I hope he can get his real sis soon so that he wont be alone even if he and MY doesnt work out.
And I don't know if it's the magic or hairstyle change or what, but i have been immensely moved by JH's performance in the last 2 episodes. Yes he's been doing a great job switching between comedic and poignant moments before but these two episodes... Every moment is a treat to watch. I feel like i can keep on looping these two episodes and just admire him frame to frame. He's soooo good at that pining look. Plus his soft voice as he read out the msg to MY? Melts me.

I loved the duo of episodes for this week ^.^ Nah!! Who am I kidding?? I love this version of "Fated", period <3 Thanks for the recap!!! I've literally been refreshing Dramabeans all day lol
Now onto some thoughts:
I loved that today was such a refreshing episode all about the characters and each of their developments ^.^
The juxtaposition of our Snail couple--Gun rejecting Mi Young 3 years ago, and how Mi Young is rejecting Gun now-- is so heart-wrenching but is needed in order to have the remainder of the fleshing out of our beloved characters and the plot, so I completely understand and am fine with it.
DANIEL!!!! Oooooh Daniel..... I'm glad that he finally got his time and episode in this one to shine and to be fleshed out and not remain that flat and "same old" Second Lead ^.^ I've always believed in his sincerity, respect, and love for Mi Young and I'm so glad that he's not written as the same old obnoxious, clingy, and over-bearing Second Lead. I love that he gave himself space to figure out and to confirm his feelings for Mi Young, even after spending all these years by her side-- for the fear that he had already thought of her as "family" instead of someone he has Eros love for-- and knew that what he feels for her is the 'right' kind of love, which was proven in the whole Not-Mi Young-the-sister incident... Kudos to the writers for giving us something different, and hats tipped to Choi Jin Hyuk's interpretation of the character and giving D.Pit so many layers and not making him into a, possibly, predictable character <3
And finally: HOW CUTE IS IT THAT YONG IS TRYING SO HARD FOR GUN AND MI YOUNG??? BUT MOSTLY FOR GUN???? SO. CUTE.

Oh, boy! I get that Gun had it coming because he rejected Miyoung back then...but...but...I still ached for him when Miyoung rejected him.
Oh, Miyoung! The things she said to Gun would've been my advice to someone in her position...but...but... Well at least she wasn't as cold as I thought she would be. It's just like her head tells her she's doing the right thing, but buried deep in her heart Old Miyoung's protesting that she was too harsh and abrupt on Gun.
And oh, Daniel! I never really minded him in the past 13 episodes but this time he kinda ticked me off. Not that he was being a jerk or a creep or anything like that, but there's just something in the way he ignores Miyoung's lingering feelings for someone that made me a little mad at him. (Hope Dr. Oh Jin-hee* beats him!). That theater scene is just so wrong and I kept shouting at Miyoung to please not yes because it felt like settling. Don't settle! Don't settle!
Anyway, love the "texting' scenes. Awesome idea from the writer and/or PD.

Is it me being greedy since ep 13 was so great that today's was " meh"??!
Don't get me wrong; I still adore the drama, but the noble idiocy of the 2 leads just makes me want to scream. Gun, you're fine. Forget about the health problem and just hurry up and grab hold of MYsshi before she returns to Le Paris.
Same thing for MY- yes, Gunnie is an ass, but we ALL know you never fall out of love with him. I say, let's see how much does he cherish you. You just sit back, Honey and make Gunnie WORK and earn your love. I,too, feel your pain for your loss of the precious child. But, who else understands that sorrow but the father who also suffered the same .
My complaint for this epi- writer nim, just hurry up with Daniel's reunion with his sister. I think besides him, everyone in this dramaverse knows who his sister is. Let the man has his family back!
Gun- while you began your false identity harmlessly so that that you can have kkedonggie's portrait, please don't hurt MY sshi more by misleading your caring as an "unni" and instead thinking you as a insincere cad.

Who can turn down such proposal from Daniel? Definitely, MY will say yes. Just sad, this is a big slash for Gun. Painful, but it must happen. Either he wakes up and level-up his game; or just sulk and truly wishes MY's happiness (if i don't he will do, he will be taken aback for while). Our OTP will for sure end up together, the journey towards that end is so evasive.
I love love Gun's small talk with Keddongie -- talking about mom in both eps. This is the one that melts my heart.
I like the text conversation. But, seriously, the fake identify of Gun being Young Ja is so deceiving. How will MY react if she finds out? Is this digging Gun's gave deeper?

Re: Gun betraying MY's confidence by pretending to be someone else... Didn't Daniel basically do the same thing by letting her believe that he was a priest? And no one's really angry at Daniel right now so what's the big difference? She divulged private information to him thinking that he would keep them as a "priest" and forgave him when she found out he wasn't so hopefully she'll give Gun a pass here too (but I doubt it since we need the angst).

hopefully she'll see the pretense as a curious gesture from the father of her unborn child, who has been pushing her away from the day she had the miscarriage, whom she had seen with his ex-girlfriend on the very day she returned to korea, but who clearly hasn't forgotten their past that he would recognize in one glance the most valuable and meaningful artwork in her entire collection. and hopefully, the discovery would lead her to seek him out and ask him why all this subterfuge when he won't let her stay by his side 3 years ago..

That opening scene... the way Gun's eyes teared when he thought he was dreaming about Mi Young... that was some powerful acting. Someone give this man a trophy!
And the way he slept on the couch, stomach down, face resting into a cushion-I think that's the most handsome form I have ever seen of Jang Hyuk lol
P.S. I hate Daniel, only because I used to be in Mi Young's position once upon a time. I found out that I can never be friends with a guy who likes me more than just that, because my general niceness juat "strung him along" even though I had made it 100% clear that I had zero interest in dating him. We were friends first so I couldn't just shoo him away but damn was he annoyingly persistent. I think that's how Mi Young feels!

Amen !
The old MY said that marriage needs to be out of love, which she clearly doean' have for DP. I hope that part of her didn't change, otherwise .. trouble !
Just like you said, that first scene was so heartbreaking. That "nice to see you in my dreams" and those eyes .. There was so much love and pain in that scene that DP's proposal sounded like an anecdote in comparison.
I literally paused the episode at the scene where Gun's asleep on MY's sofa, and yelled at him for being that gorgeous. I guess morning exercise is to MY what a cold shower is to Gun.

I just want to see what kind of grand gesture Gun has in store for our snail in the next episodes. If he was able to pull off the fireworks and the 30k Keddongie cup when his feelings were still wavering, I wonder what he would do when he really puts his mind to it and he's in full "romantic" mode.

The ONLY grand gesture Gunnie needs is - very simple.... The firework and $30k kkedonnie cup are unnecessary.
A simple, sincere truthful talk between the OTP is all MYsshi would like and appreciate. C'mon, Gunnie, last time you 2 began with lies and trickery.... Unless you want MYsshi to say au revoir to you, Go. Get. Her... Gi gguem ... NOW >.<

My guess is that there's no way MY would accept Daniel's proposal. It's definitely a conflict between hurting his feelings right now or hurting him in the long run (by giving him false hope) and from all the text messages she sent to Gun, it is likely that MY would say no, for Daniel's own benefit. But somehow I think Gun wouldn't hear this, he'd probably leave before MY even answers.

Given his pretty neutral replies to Daniel when they finally met (and had coffee?) I think there's a possibility that he took himself out of the competition because he thinks his illness makes him unsuitable for MY, yet can't fully get behind the idea of rooting for his rival to be with his ex(?) wife.

i think his neutral replies are because he saw how happy MY was and how well she grew up over the past 3 years. his illness is practically out of the picture now since he has confirmed that his previous rejection of MY was basically unnecessary...

wow. today's episode was more like poetry than tv. and those two, they make a perfect rhyme. i was really touched by the text scenes. and having them in succession like that, well it just felt like one verse flowing into another.
i know, i know daniel is making quite the effort. but i'm still iffy about it. i don't know if others felt this way, but for me the proposal felt a bit too grand, and therefore, a little bit formal, and therefore, left me feeling somewhat cold? the fact that mi-young clapped and cheered after it was over, she gave the impression of being more of an audience than a recipient of the proposal. it felt like she was appreciating the beautiful creation of another fellow artist. as far as the emotional weight it was supposed to carry, i'm not so sure, and neither is mi-young, me feels.
of course, that won't stop her from saying yes, and for the time being, i feel like she might say yes. but man, that scene was inserted into the episode totally for the sake of gunnie. so my heart was peeking from behind that painting gunnie was holding, and the whole time, i was hyper sensitive about how all the supposed beauty in the proposal was ripping poor gunnie's heart into shreds.
in other news, while oppa love continues to make functioning in daily life difficult, i'm blown away by mi-young's consistent boldness. she may not be sassy, but that woman is so strong. she addresses gunnie's drunken 'it's so nice to see you' proposal (me thinks that was the only 'real' proposal in today's episode) straight to his face. rejects it with a realism that carries the burden of their past. compare that to the childish - and false - denial in gunnie's response. with the revamp the show went through in part II, i'd earlier feared that they were going to completely override whatever emotional buildup losing the baby had created. but the show is so great at adding on layers. so that the conversation in the cafe leaves miyoung and gunnie continuing from exactly where they left off three years ago. miyoung-sshi...brevity of words. sincerity of emotions. and clarity of intent. this portrayal is seriously turning me into a forever jang nara fan.
and 'unnie...where have i heard that before?' lol. i went into a fit of laughter because it was one of those few meta references that i actually got without having to come here for an explanation first. show is so great in so many ways.
thank you heads for another awesome recap! you and gummi do wonders to our drama experience.

I was so not here for Daniels proposal, proposals where there are these grand gestures always make me think that they're over compensating for something and in Daniels case it's because he knows that MY isn't as in love with him as she was with Gun or as he is for her.

As much as I love Gun, I have to say Daniel's proposal was DA BOMB. Guy's got his A game in place. I was screaming at my console that Gun shouldn't interrupt this magical moment between Daniel and Ellie, that Min Young should say yes! (I know, I'm a traitor, but who can say no to such a beautiful and heartfelt proposal?).
To be honest, Daniel and Ellie would make a good match, he's crazy about her, he's loaded and has connections in the art world, and she cares for him....
But I have to admit, their relationship has none of the sparkle, vibe and chemistry that the Lee Gun - Kim Min Young pairing does. You can just see/(feel?) the sizzle between them that their love is the love of a lifetime.
Kudos to Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara that they can fully pull you in to their world and make you FEEL everything they are going through, their acting is just that good. They actually have the power to ruin or make my day. I'm tearing up. So many feels... (Sigh).

I agree with you about MY and LG chemistry, nothing can beat the firework scheme of LG in Han river, I cried like a fool over that episode, and we know that MY is vulnerable at that time and he I the perfect solution to her wound, I stil believe that only LG will heal her after all he is the idiot one who gave her a scar, it's time for him to heal as well because he is still inflicting pain to himself after all this three years.
Daniel is longing for a family, I think he need to find his real family first before he jump into conclusion of making a family with MY.
If MY really loves/like him why it takes him three years to propose? It just means that MY still have lingering feelings to LG. MY is an honest person as well she doesn't want anyone to suffer so I think she will be reasonable to him and be true that she needs time to sort out first with the issue of her ex husband

One thing I absolutely love about FTLY is how this drama painstakingly fleshes out its major and minor characters so you get to empathize with them and see their motivations.
I love that there are no cardboard cut villians (even Yong's mom) but real people. Even Sera isn't your typical second lead bitch, but a warm woman who made bad choices in the past, but is redeeming herself and has found inner peace being a 'cool' teacher. Yong is not the typical destructive half brother, but a sweet man who just wants to be acknowledged and loved by his hyung. Ji yeon is the supportive best friend, trying her best to eke out a living and has fallen in love with her best friend's ex brother in law. Min Young's mom is a beautiful mother who dearly loves her daughter's ex. And Secretary Tak's relationship with his boss is priceless! They're not strictly boss & employer, I detect a deeper friendship between them and their scenes are comedic gold.
It's all these fleshed-out side characters that makes the show as endearing as it is. In addition to the main leads who are so real, lovable and endearing, it becomes the recipe for a gem of a drama.

i have a question.
Why does Yong inherit the family disease? Was it only for Gun cause he resembles his father and ancestors??
Required fields are marked *

August 15, 2014 at 7:35 AM
There's a possibility that Yong may inherit the disease as well. If he's their father's biological son, which I believe he is. It's just that he is so much younger than Gun, that such a possibility isn't really on his radar to worry about yet. Gun is closer to the age that their father was when he got the disease, which is why it is more a concern for him at present.
Gun also lived under the shadow of his forefathers and father's genetic legacy so he knows full well the symptoms of the disease and the ravages it can bring to the sufferer and their families, while Yong, on the other hand, has mainly been concerned with just trying to survive, so his preoccupation is different at the moment.
The other thing to note is that, neither Gun nor Yong have the disease at present, but Gun's personality is that of a hypochondriac, that's another reason he always worries over his health.

Ahhhh just love this drama. LG is so hilarious , I'm still chuckling how he jumped out of the bushes in episode 13. Love his new hair tho before he kinda looked like a crazy vampire.
Wow choices coming up, props to Daniel( love his eye smile) to finally stepping up to the plate though I think he waited a bit too late. MY has met LG and the feelings she once had are cropping up again. Someone else said she will ask for time to think about his proposal, I think so too but the answer will eventually be no.
I think she feels / felt a passion and intensity with LG which she doesn't feel with Daniel, but the bad memories of the past are scaring her away. So LG will have to do a lot more than jumping around ninja style ,hiding in corners and behind a fake name to win her back. Poor guy, you can see he is suffering too. LG fighting! ( wohahahah cackle)

Thanks for recap. I love this episode even I'm totally with Lee Gun and I feel so heartbroken at the end with him. I know that it is a time to emphasize audience that 3 year go by but Lee Gun And Mi Young still love each other so much. I think DP proposal scene will be the reason why he can't have Mi Young. Seriously, DP so selfish. Mi Young still have wound in her heart. It never healed by time or DP. Since Mi Young never try to fix that wound because that was the most precious thing in her life. As she confess with Young ja/Gun about that in episode 13. She need somebody to fix this and that only person is Lee Gun only. Obviously, DP try to ask her marry with reason that they both have sad memory and understand each other because of that bra..bra.ra! It is stupid reason for me. How can 2 broken heart support each other while the original reason still there and it keep pop up in their mind in every single day. This kind of relationship will end very soon since it not a real love. It just a kind of supportive relationship that will rip your heart once its end. This is why I think DP so selfish at this point. I seriously hate DP, this character is dead for me now. However, since all plot come this way. Mi Young seem to say yes and I will heart broken again along with Lee Gun in upcoming episode. I won't say that I hate this kind for torture feeling. It part of plot that make me love Lee Gun more and more. If Mi Young say yes, I can't deny that I will start to hate Mi Young at the point. I hope I won't feel that way in next episode, how can I hate the lead role, I don't know. It may because I saw how Lee Gun improve and take care of single thing about her for 3 years. Know nothing about Lee Gun actions and move to another guy. Her character become a stupid blind! If she say yes, I won't try to understand her and I will hate her for sure. Hope it not happen. I feel this way since I worry about Lee Gun so much after saw heartbroken Lee Gun for 2 episode.

What I think will happen is that MY will accept the proposal and they will try to get married only to realize that MY and Gun were never divorced leading to a whole sort of shit storm of questions between the two. I've had a strong feeling they never divorced since MY came back to Korea just because they never showed Gun actually doing anything with the document on his end and that was Se Ra's fake one so if he actually even read it then he surely would not have used it. So if this happens then Gun has the chance to kind of redeem himself to MY leading to them getting back together hopefully.

Ep 14 was sooooo slow and boring after 13. I don't *care* about DP's back story. That whole digression about how he lost his sister - boring! After the 1st viewing I FFed through his scenes and only watched MY and LG.
As much as I love this show and our OTP, I really couldn't enjoy this episode because the actors look SO TIRED. I mean, they're beautiful of course, and their acting is amazing but they look terrible. JH's got huge bags under his eyes and JN's face is half the size it was at the beginning of the series. When you said her eyes filled up with unshed tears, I thought, "were they unshed tears or glazed with tiredness"? I read that they're sleeping, like, 2 hours a day.
Totally addicted to this show but I would wait an extra week so the actors could get some sleep.

I just commented about how much I LOVE this drama, but after reading your opinion; I feel the same way.
This week went by really slow for me because I've been on vacation so I REALLY was anxiously waiting for this wee's episodes.
But, as I was watching ep 14, I saw how big Daniel's bags wwere after the close-up of his face after meeting Lee Gun in the cafe.
I feel bad for them. No matter how I want to see the next episodes, they deserve their rest for the amazing job they've done so far. T.T I can wait an extra week for them to rest also OR Korean just needs to stop live shooting. Do it like how the Thais do or the Taiwanese do! I love Daniel and Gun but can we give a big hug to little brother Yong?
I just adore the fact that they(he and mom) "should be" the villains, but they are so bad at it! Unlike most Kdrama villains who do the most unbelievable, far out scams en schemes he and his mom are just regular people trying to get one up on a family member who they think got the best deal through some childish teasing (and rightly so, just because he is a child born out of wedlock, they should not have kicked him out of the family)
I really respect the fact that he told the girl at the matchmaking date that "being manager was great and in his company ,with hard work, you could even become CEO" this to me (and the pride he takes in his job as manager) tells me that he is very much like Gun, not afraid to work hard and not thinking he is entitled to it just because of his birthright. He really seems like he wants to rean it.The fact that he is also a big Gun - mi young shipper is heartwarming, and you can see he really admires and loves his big brother. I think it is Mutual too because Gun treats him as you would a pesky little brother now, not like a total stranger or intruder like he did in the first episodes. Even his reaction when Ji confessed her feelings and left (the physical pain in his heart) was almost a copy of the way Gun reacts to Mi-young..the brothers even love in the same intense way. So yay for our little Dragon!! He's a cutie..come on people , give a little Dongsaeng love here or whoudl we say yong-saeng love ;)

Maybe this is CRAZY, did anyone notice Lee Gun and Mi-Youngs clothes at their unexpected meeting in the restaurant? Their clothes were so pale and lifeless. MiYoung's clothes at her art show were just gorgeous, and she used to wear bright orange and that beautiful yellow dress at Gun's house, and Gun wore that bright orange vest while they were singing together. Now at their meeting, as two people not together, alone,.. she wore pale lifeless colors and Gun the same, that beige lifeless brown shirt. Like I said this maybe crazy, however I think their clothes symbolizes their lives apart from each other, are lifeless and pale. When they are together it gives color to their lives.

Let's lay out the case, shall we?
1. D Pitt is cute, right?
2. D Pitt is tall and well-built, no?
3. D Pitt is well-to-do, yes?
4. D Pitt is emotionally well-adjusted, agreed?
5. D Pitt is mild mannered and never abusive, correct?
6. D Pitt has ambition and is hard working, okay?
7. D Pitt can even do Nina-style sand table paintings, true?
8. D Pitt has been patient and waiting for her, yeah?
9. and more importantly, D Pitt loves her. This isn't a question.
10. Oh, and D Pitt didn't knock her up, ask for a divorce a few different times, forget who she was, ask her if her baby was his, reject her out of self-pity, treat her like dirt. D Pitt did the opposite. He treated her like a person, helped her to grow, sheltered her from the storm, kept her spirits up, helped her discover her courage and true self, and helped her through the loss of her child.
Yeah, that D Pitt, he sure suxxors, doesn't he.

If I were neighbors with him and I was going to have a party, I would give him an invitation, but I would send it to him with only a day or two days notice.
If I were neighbors with him and I noticed that his lawn had crab grass, I would keep it a secret.

But, my dear Samsooki, all this says something about D Pitt in isolation. His is a lost case as soon as Mi-young's feelings come into the picture. And we all want to put that above everything else, don't we?
I find Choi Jin-hyuk to be a fascinating specimen of a person. From what I saw of him in an episode of Running Man, I found him to have this pixie-like appeal. Not hot as much as...flexible and...funny. He hops and glides like he's got tiny wings attached to his feet. And his entire body is like a humor churning machine. That man is adorable. I'd happily settle for a show with him in the lead - a little more spiced up than here, with a few quirky traits, some inexplicable, outrageous treats. I know he'd be able to pull it off so well.
But Daniel Pitt Just. Doesn't. Do. It. For. Me. Even if your list had 20 more points, it wouldn't do much to help his case.
He's a perfect character on paper. Except he feels a wee bit out of place in this story. That's probably cause it's not his. He's just plain redundant.
