Fated To Love You: Episode 12

If you thought that yesterday’s episode was brutal, then gird your loins for what comes next, which can best be described as a lot. A lot of pain, a lot of blame, and a lot of noble idiocy—and if you’re thinking to yourself that maybe this specific brand of noble idiocy will be different, you’d be right: It’s so much worse. Noble idiocy has been responsible for some of dramaland’s lowest lows, but never has it wreaked quite so much havoc and tragedy. But hey, that’s what communal commiseration is for, right? *hands out tissue boxes*

EPISODE 12 RECAP

Gun, having regained his memories, stops in front of Mom’s restaurant to see Mi-young with a young infant in her arms. Rest assured, we haven’t undergone amnesia and a time skip—it’s her unni’s newborn baby.

Instead of getting out, he drives straight to Doctor Moon to ask if his fainting and memory loss means he’s contracted his family’s long-running genetic disease. Doctor Moon sighs that it’s possible, since the symptoms Gun is experiencing now are similar to what his father suffered around his age.

With tears in his eyes, Gun realizes that he’ll be no different than his father, his grandfather, his great-grandfather, and so on in dying in his thirties. He rails on Doctor Moon when he urges him not to worry: “How can I not worry? My grandmother, our Mi-young and Keddongie… My family, the people I have to protect. How can I not be worried?!”

While meeting with Mi-young to finally give her the cup she made for Gun, Daniel asks what she’ll do if Gun’s memory doesn’t come back. Mi-young, optimistic as always, says she doesn’t want to think of the worst: “I’ll trust him and wait.”

But when realtors come knocking, Mi-young asks Daniel if he’s selling the cafe. He says he is, and that he’s leaving for France next month. Even Mi-young acknowledges how sudden it is, which I guess means that Daniel took that friend-zoning business pretty hard. (Still, you don’t make a declaration like that and not try. Come on, Daniel!)

Mi-young attends the next and final prenatal class alone, which entails writing a letter for the baby to read when he’s old enough. It’s both sad and cute how Mi-young spares one glance to the doorway, as if hoping that Gun would magically appear like he always used to do.

So Mi-young decides to write Keddongie a letter from Gun, and has a little bit of fun trying to mimic Gun’s low tone of voice…

…But then the sound of mad cackling comes from the doorway. It’s Gun!! I never thought I’d be so happy to hear that insane laugh, and neither does Mi-young. He laughs all the way to his spot next to his wife, where he says that—despite his brain issues—he wouldn’t start his letter the way she was writing it. Hah.

I’m not quite sure if he’s completely back, or if they’re both just glossing over the amnesia episode, but he tells her to write his letter to Keddongie while he dictates.

At first, he starts talking about how beautiful and wonderful life is, but then derails to a more realistic approach. What was supposed to be a light letter turns into a survival guide, which Gun defends as being necessary when Mi-young mentions that he might be taking this a little too seriously.

When they stop to eat Mi-young’s favorite pungent fish snack, it seems like Gun doesn’t remember everything(?), since Mi-young reminds him that he had to stuff his nose with tissues to avoid the smell the first time he came with her.

He doesn’t believe her, but Mi-young insists that he did all sorts of things he wouldn’t have imagined himself doing, whether it was running from a dog like a crazy man or rapping for her mother. “You were such a fun person… and a very good husband,” she adds. “You always made me laugh.”

“I never caused you any heartache or made you cry… not even once?” he asks disbelievingly. Mi-young: “No, you didn’t. Not even once.” Gun shakes his head when he says that she’s too nice sometimes, only for Mi-young to admit with a small smile that he wasn’t always a saint.

But thanks to him, she says, she went from being a post-it girl to superglue, like a princess in a fairytale. “But, Kim Mi-young-sshi, I can’t always be by your side. In the end, we’ll have to part ways,” he says.

He’s referencing his death, which I don’t think Mi-young catches on to, even as she says that she’s working hard to become a source of strength for him. “I want you to be able to rely on me the way I was able to rely on you in case you get your memory back, so that we can be together.”

She finally gets to hand him the birthday present he wanted: his Gunnie Cup. Gun has to fight the tears that immediately spring to his eyes, because he doesn’t want Mi-young to know why he’s struggling.

Manager Tak goes to Gun with a plan to help lift Mi-young’s spirits while Gun is still an amnesiac… only for him to realize that Gun’s memories are back, all of them.

But Gun stops him before he can call Mi-young with the good news, because he doesn’t want her to know. He’s trying to spare her from the pain she’ll suffer because of his genetic disease. Ugh. I get it, but still. Noble Idiocy is to Amnesia what Denny’s is to La Quinta.

Gun meets with Se-ra for one reason only: “Let’s break up.” She immediately pins the blame on Mi-young, only for Gun to say that he’ll end things with her, too. As he apologizes numbly to Se-ra for wasting the precious six years they had together, she breaks down into tears.

“It’ all because of Kim Mi-young. If it wasn’t for her, none of this would have happened. I hate it. I never thought… that I’d have to live without seeing you,” Se-ra cries. Gun’s face remains motionless.

While quitting his DJ job for his impending trip to France, Daniel recognizes Se-ra drinking at the bar. He advises her not to do things that’ll hurt other people just because she’s been hurt, and while she thanks him for the advice, she won’t take it: She’s lost everything, which means there’s only one thing left for her.

We finally find out what was in the second divorce agreement Gun made when he visits Lawyer Hong, which is actually more like a love pact: In it, Gun gave all the power to Mi-young to decide when and if they’d ever divorce, that he’d have to provide for her if they did, and that they’d raise the baby together.

Gun decides to void both the original divorce agreement and the newer one—now his conditions are that Mi-young will have parental rights when it comes to the baby, and that she’ll be compensated after the divorce.

But here’s the kicker, and the whole reason why Gun is doing all of this: In the event he were to die, everything he owns would go to Mi-young and the baby. Lawyer Hong notes that this sounds more like a last will and testament than a divorce agreement, and Gun doesn’t disagree.

Se-ra calls Mi-young for a meeting, which we know isn’t going to end well. Se-ra acts like she’s in the know when Mi-young isn’t, and asks whether she knew that Gun plans to end things with her. Mi-young says she didn’t, but can’t see how he’d say something like that…

“Why do you think he can’t remember his own marriage?” Se-ra fires back. “It’s because he wants to forget it. He wants to erase it from his memory.” She also claims he changed the divorce agreement, and slides the new document over to her. Se-ra, what dafaq is wrong with you?

Of course, the divorce agreement Se-ra hands to her is completely fabricated, and states that Mi-young will be given compensation after the divorce, say nothing to the media, and give the baby to Gun. “He wants you to hand over the baby and end it,” Se-ra adds coldly.

Mi-young leaves the cafe in utter disbelief, and only worries more when Gun calls her to meet with him because he has something to say. Ohhh no. This is bad. This is baaad.

Gun notes Mi-young’s troubled expression, but doesn’t pay it much attention as he hands over a box. She opens it to find Keddongie’s Cup inside, which, ouch. Gun says he’s giving it to her because it doesn’t suit the home’s decor. What is going on, seriously?

“Your role as the daughter-in-law of my household and my wife is over starting from today,” Gun says. “Leave. If you’re unsure because of the baby, I’ll give up my parental rights.” He finishes by placing his wedding band on the table.

Now, the words Se-ra said that Mi-young didn’t want to believe come back to haunt her. She tells him that she didn’t think it was possible when she heard that he lost his memory because he wanted to forget about their marriage.

Mi-young: “I must have made a grave misunderstanding. When I heard that the reason you lost your memory was because you wanted to erase me from your subconscious, I thought that would never be the case. Even if you forget your memories of me, I believed that you wouldn’t forget how precious a person you are to the baby. I thought that you would never do that. It’s always like this. Imagining things on my own like a fool, trusting people like a fool, depending on people… like a fool. It was going to be like this in the end.”

As she flashes back to the moments where Gun literally swept her off her feet, she says how foolish she was to ever have expected anything. But Gun interrupts her to coldly ask if she assumed she’d be understood just because she acts so innocent.

“Did I not say before that no matter who it is, there isn’t anyone who will stay with you forever?” he asks. “This is a world where you live and fight alone.” He then asks how she’ll manage to fight all on her own if she stays hung up on the three meager months they’ve been together—and with a child, no less.

At least Mi-young stands up for herself, however meekly, when she tells him that he doesn’t have to be so harsh. (For REAL. He is being the worst.) “I’ve already decided,” she says with unshed tears in her eyes, “Let’s break up.”

I can’t even be happy that Gun at least has the good grace to walk her out, because his words seem empty when he tells her that he hopes she’ll be happy wherever she goes. Though she smiles, her words are heartbreaking as she wonders whether there’s any happiness left for her when she’s already experienced all the happiness she could possibly have dreamt of.

“The things that I could never imagine in this world came true after I met you. Bad things became good things, and I became a family with someone I love.” Gun is still resolute and unmoved, as he tells her not to look back at what’s passed, only forward.

She puts on a smile as she says she’ll take his advice—it’s not like they’ll see each other again anyway, right? After she turns to leave, Gun calls after her with one last piece of advice—it’s the same advice he gave her in Macau when they parted, about not being too nice and to be more confident.

As Mi-young crosses the street, her steps slow as everything hits her all at once. But then she remembers Gun at the prenatal class, saying he wants to do his job as a father, as well as when he said those exact same words to her in Macau… and realizes that he has his memory back.

She turns back around and calls his name repeatedly, and while Gun hears her, he convinces himself not to look back. “Gun!” she cries behind him. “Gun!”

Then, behind him, a car slams on its brakes…

…Right before it collides into Mi-young. The Keddongie Cup shatters on the ground as she falls, and Gun turns around slowly, disbelievingly… Oh god. Oh god oh god oh god. Oh god, no no no.

Gun is a mess as Mi-young is rushed to the hospital, as he begs the doctors to save her with tears in his eyes. “Is this your wife?” one of the doctors asks. “Yes, she’s my wife!” Gun cries. “She’s my wife!”

Mi-young comes to, but her first thought is for her baby as her hand clutches her stomach: “What about… what about my baby? My baby… is it okay? Our Keddongie,” she sobs. “Save my baby! Please save my baby… please… please…”

Gun tries to comfort her, but she’s gone into hysterics, and can barely murmur his name and Keddongie’s before she suddenly falls unconscious. The doctors swarm around her and pull a frantically crying Gun away. (I’ve had to take way too many tissue breaks already. No more, please.)

Doctor Moon tells Gun that Mi-young will need surgery in order to live—but the surgery will endanger the baby. In this case, he can only choose one or the other: Will it be Mi-young or Keddongie?

After Gun sinks down in despair, we find Mi-young in surgery, which means Gun has made his choice. He keeps vigil outside the operating room as he thinks back to her saying she was unsure if there was any happiness left for her. Because the biggest source of happiness in her life turned his back on her—that’s you, Gun. I hope you realize that.

Mi-young wakes in a hospital room with Gun sitting by her bedside. “What about our baby?” is the first question she whispers. Gun doesn’t answer as he helps her to sit up. “Our baby… is doing well, right?” Silence. “Why don’t you answer? Our baby is okay, right?”

Gun lets out a long sound, halfway between a sigh and a cry: “Keddongie… Keddongie isn’t here.”

Mi-young can’t believe it, won’t believe it. “Keddongie’s gone,” Gun reiterates, “I told him to go.” (Meaning that he chose Mi-young over him.) Mi-young grows more frantic as she asks him why, WHY when she told him to save Keddongie—why, when she told him she didn’t care what happened to her.

“How can I live now that Keddongie is dead?” she wails. “Please bring him back… Please bring Keddongie back! Bring him back!” She devolves into incoherent sobs as Gun tries to hold her and comfort her, but it’s no use.

Mom and Grandma Wang come in just then, only for Mi-young to eke between her sobs that Keddongie is gone. He’s gone. God, this scene is horrible to watch. It’s just horrible.

After admitting to Grandma Wang that it was all his fault outside, Gun returns to Mi-young’s room to find her asleep. He can only hold her hand as he apologizes with shaking shoulders, before he breaks down completely.

Gun pays a visit to the remains of his parents, addressing his mother first as he tells her about the strange woman he came to like—as strange as his mother was. “I don’t know how she can endure this with such a frail and petite body. I want to hold her tight, but I don’t think I should. You know, right, Mom?”

He’s much more formal when addressing his father, as he asks whether he also became afraid that he’d lose his memory. He tells his father that he found a girl he really likes and wants to be with, but he’s afraid he’ll lose her, and can’t bring himself to ask her to stay. Okay, but, why?

Daniel visits Mi-young at the hospital, even if he’s not sure how to console her. She ends up consoling him instead by saying there’s no need to comfort her—this was all her fault.

When he says it was just an accident, Mi-young explains why that’s just an excuse, and why she won’t use any now. “It’s my fault that I lost the baby.” At least Daniel lifts her spirits when he gives her a box full of art supplies, since he knows painting and drawing makes her happy.

While Mi-young sleeps inside next to a drawing of Keddongie with angel wings, Gun hangs her heart-shaped lollipop on the doorknob. “You said that people who like sweet things want to be happy. If there’s a little happiness left in my life, I’ll give all of that to you. You have to be happy, Mi-young.” And then he leaves.

After getting discharged and moving in with ex-roomie Ji-yeon, Mi-young pays a visit to Gun in his office. She cuts the small talk and gets right to the point: “Why did you lie? You could have told me you got your memories back. Was I too much of a burden for you to do even that?”

Even though Gun’s reaction is still cold and not really much of an explanation, Mi-young says this’ll be the last time she asks him a foolish question:“Is it possible to forget everything and start over? The time was short, but like before… can’t you stay by my side?”

Gun actually looks her in the eyes as he rejects her with an “I’m sorry.” Seriously, Gun? Seriously.

She passes over the divorce papers Se-ra gave her, along with her ring. He tries blaming himself, only for Mi-young to reply that it was no one’s fault—they were wrong from the beginning.

Mi-young packs her things from Lee Manor, but breaks down into pitiful sobs when she finds Keddongie’s diary. “I’m sorry,” she cries.

After a silent farewell hug with Grandma, Mi-young stops by Daniel’s cafe on her way out, looking especially glum when he says he’ll be leaving for France the day after tomorrow. He tries to lighten the mood by asking if she’s sad to break up with the best neighborhood oppa ever. (Kiind of feel like you haven’t been the best neighborhood oppa lately though.)

However, he hands her a brochure for an art school in Paris, and tells her to consider it seriously. He’ll do whatever he can to help, but urges her to take this chance to make a change in her life.

After taking a long look at his now-sparse bedroom, Gun unlocks the door to his man cave, where he’s kept Keddongie’s crib and toys, and sits beside them for a while.

Mom gives Gun the money he gave them for the restaurant now that she’s sold it, which effectively ends the ties between them. But Mom still comforts him when she calls him “Gun-ah” and says that he and Mi-young did all they could—it just wasn’t meant to be.

Even though Gun uses the more formal “Mother” instead of “Mom” when he asks if he can see Mi-young for the last time, his face falls when Mom tells him that Mi-young left overseas to start anew. She tells Gun to do the same.

As Mi-young walks through the airport with Daniel, she flashes back to all her fond memories with Gun as she thinks to herself, “There was a time I was greedy over something that could never happen: I wanted to be a kind wife who would take your jacket off and hang it, make you a delicious dinner while you rested, and talk about our days at the dinner table with you. I wanted to lay my head on your arm and wish you good night. It would have been nice if you and I were fated… but you said this once: That if we met in better circumstances, we would have been destined to be together.”

She’s unaware that Gun is running through the airport looking desperately for her and calling her name. Her inner monologue continues, “If it hurts this much, then it means we weren’t fated to be. If by chance we were to meet each other again, let’s pretend not to know each other.”

Gun is just a few steps too late, and misses Mi-young as she disappears through customs. Mi-young: “Gunnie-sshi, take care.” Gun just cries, “Dalpeng-ah!!”

Three years later.

A much different, fashionably-styled Mi-young walks through the Seoul airport. She passes Gun (also sporting a new ‘do) without recognizing him, but he turns around. Something about her struck him as familiar…

But he’s called away by Manager Tak just as Mi-young greets Daniel with a wide smile.

COMMENTS

I never thought I’d say this, but I liked it better when Gun had amnesia. Even if that didn’t really excuse his harshness to Mi-young, it at least lifted some of the burden of responsibility from him because he wasn’t fully himself. It was easier to forgive him and wait, just the way Mi-young did, for him to come back around—because she/we trusted him.

But when he did regain his memories, he so brutally betrayed Mi-young’s trust that I’m still left reeling, even with all the other events from this (admittedly very dense) episode. It all started from that betrayal, and while accidents are accidents and there’s nothing Gun could have physically done to prevent what happened to Mi-young, out of everyone playing the blame game, Gun actually won. Because I lost my ability to understand him this episode.

If I got the basic gist right, which is maybe the only thing I feel remotely confident about, Gun’s thought process went as such: 1) He knew there was a high chance he’d lose his memories again, 2) He knew that there was a high likelihood he’d die young like every son in his family, therefore 3) The only way to save Mi-young from the irrevocable pain of losing him later was to heap all that irrevocable pain on her now.

I don’t get it. I really, really don’t. I tried. Even if I vaguely understood the basic idea driving Gun’s noble idiocy (saving Mi-young), I don’t at all see how it worked in practice. More than that, I don’t see how Gun thought his tactic was working when he had an ample opportunities to see how much he was hurting Mi-young. Even when he was being his coldest toward her, did it not once cross his mind that inflicting pain upon her intentionally to spare her the pain he’d later inflict unintentionally was not only counterintuitive, but incredibly cruel?

But fine, let’s say he did enough mental gymnastics to convince himself that what he was doing was right, and that it’d take real emotional jolt to bring him back to his senses. Was losing Keddongie not enough? That didn’t earn Mi-young even an ounce of pity from him when it came to peeling her away from his life like a barnacle? Granted, we can argue how much we know Gun was hurting inside, and that he only became more determined to try to save her after losing Keddongie. But it’s not like Mi-young misunderstood him, or even blamed him for choosing her over the baby—she went to him, point-blank, and asked if they could start fresh. And he said no.

So when faced with his wife who’d just lost their baby, who clearly loved him and wanted to be with him, he still thought it’d be somehow better for her to live thinking that he never loved her? I just don’t understand. My heart broke for Mi-young a million times over, because she was surrounded by people yet alone in her suffering. But to be abandoned by Gun when she needed him most was just so beyond my level of comprehension that as of now, she’s achieved sainthood and deserves only the best in life. Gun, on the other hand, is going to need a miracle and a week in time out.

Ok onto my second leads...

Daniel had a different hair color too...#love!
hope to god they dont make it that Sera was the one driving the car...
part of me hopes that Daniel and MY have been in a relationship for the past 2 years or so but then the heartbreak he will experience when MY and Gun reunite might not be worth it, so another part of me just hopes they developed that brother-sister bond and that the writers are satisfied with using that to make Gun jealous.

Myabe I am in minority but I think MY can be better off with Daniel( as far as they were not real bro/sis). I understand that this drama is set for MY and Gun but if I were MY, I would go for Daniel to get rid of all sad memories of Gun( though there were happy moments together but all tinted with more agonies). In reality, one can go out with a guy to forget other guy and later fall in love with this step stone guy. if some one like Gun can cause so much agonies in my life, I would stay away from him no matter how much I was attracted to him.

"He tells his father that he found a girl he really likes and wants to be with, but he’s afraid he’ll lose her, and can’t bring himself to ask her to stay. Okay, but, why?"

From HDSA:
"Huntington's Disease: a devastating, hereditary, degenerative brain disorder for which there is, at present, no cure and only one FDA-approved treatment (Xenazine) for a symptom of HD.

HD slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability to walk, talk and reason. Eventually, the person with HD becomes totally dependent upon others for his or her care. Huntington's Disease profoundly affects the lives of entire families -- emotionally, socially and economically.

Early symptoms of Huntington's Disease may affect cognitive ability or mobility and include depression, mood swings, forgetfulness, clumsiness, involuntary twitching and lack of coordination. As the disease progresses, concentration and short-term memory diminish and involuntary movements of the head, trunk and limbs increase. Walking, speaking and swallowing abilities deteriorate. Eventually the person is unable to care for him or herself. Death follows from complications such as choking, infection or heart failure.

Eventually, every person afflicted by HD requires full-time care."

He just wants her to move on so she can have a normal life.

"Each child of a person with HD has a 50/50 chance of inheriting the fatal gene. Everyone who carries the gene will develop the disease. In 1993, the HD gene was isolated and a direct genetic test developed which can accurately determine whether a person carries the HD gene. The test cannot predict when symptoms will begin. However, in the absence of a cure, some individuals "at risk" elect not to take the test."

Maybe we can hope that Gun hasn't taken the test and isn't a carrier?

Oh...my heart, i cannot feel it. Too much pain for this episode. I am gonna miss Keddongie so much.

After the pain, i paused and able to breathe, shocked seeing 360 makeover of LG and KMY. Gosh, i cannot wait for next week, how they will cross their path again. Also, what funny/romantic antics Gun (with Manager Tak and Lawyer Hong) will do to win Mi Young back (must be more than fireworks).

I am also looking forward to the rivalry between D.Pitt and Lee Gun....game on. This will not be simple a jogging match.

I suspect that MY will be working for Daniel now and he will have to do business with the Lee family business again. Forcing all three together again.

Hmm the fact that Gun and Daniel are v independent and headstrong makes that collaboration quite unlikely! I don't think Daniel's working for anyone so he can very well say no (and there's no reason to 'get close' anymore).

For the baby's death i blame the original writers who couldnt to commit a show about a pregnant woman...but again beautifully handled, the Jang's did a great job, Nara especially she didnt get much in the last episode so this was her moment. Loved MY but i agree with Daniel she needed to start living a life she choosed for herself and not live by the cards the world dealt her.

Well, at least the hair mystery is solved. Gunnie loved Mi-young so much he let her style it badly just so he could have her loving hands on him...

I don't see how Gun's idiocy can be redeemed. How can he pursue Mi-Young and hold onto any thread of "noble"? Has the looming threat of Huntinton's inexplicably passed?

I mean, I can almost see that the bright side that MY will have gained confidence - maybe she has more to bring to the relationship now, but that is just screwed up. She always brought more than her share. Maybe we can hope she will be more fulfilled as a confident person...but that rings hollow to me. It feels like Coffee Prince gone horribly awry.

But this isn't meant to be Coffee Prince, it is meant to be Fated. Maybe I have something to learn about fate. I am grabbing at straws, right?

"Well, at least the hair mystery is solved."

LOL. I love that the writers are playing with the audience like that.

They knew the message boards would be lighting up with rants about the stylist. And then they give us a charming backstory in flashback footage to tsk tsk at us for being so judgey.

One small defense for Gun's noble idiocy.

As it can be seen when he talks to his father, Gun is scared that he will lose his memory again. And he already knows how he hurt MY when he lost his memory through recent amnesia, he clearly remembers himself saying hurtful words to her and her patiently enduring it by his side. He is scared that this will happen recurrently, that means he will hurt MY over and over again for her entire life, just like his mother who suffered her entire life.

Gun and MY knew each other only for 3 months. Probably married for only about 2 months. Yes, it will hurt her if he pushes her away now, but maybe getting hurt once now is better than getting hurt over and over again for the entire life.

That's the basis of Gun's decision, and it looks like a idiot to drama watcher, but to the one actually experiencing that situation, I see where his decision is coming from.

His fear for death is real, yes it's not confirmed but his great grandfather and grandfather had it and died, his father may have had it, and he now showed some kind of symptom, can't blame him for being scared.

And his fear for making MY like his own mom, who was always hurt and crying. As audience we can be like 'how do you know MY will suffer more by your side or away from you? she loves you so it'll be better by your side!' But Gun saw with his eyes how his own mother suffered as she stayed by her husband's side (some people were guessing that him having mistress and all could be related with his amnesia..? not sure). And he only knew this woman for 3 months! More like, she knew him only for 3 months, it actually makes more sense that he weighs her rest of the life over her 3 months.

So that's my defense for his noble idiocy, and I know it's a cliche but it totally made sense to me and ripped my heart. I also loved how they broke up. There was no unnecessarily harsh words, no screaming, no resenting. No matter which side initiated it, both sides agreed to end the relationship, and said good bye properly, keeping manner and respect to each other. yesterday's episode was one of the most beautifully done cliche I've ever seen.

I see where his decision is coming from too, and I accept it. I still think it's stupid, and he should let Mi Young on the decision too, but in this case of noble idiocy, I accept the logic.

This being a k-drama and i know how bad these k-drama writer are at ending dramas i fear they might give Gun HD anyways and leave with us with a 'their happy now but in the future they are gonna have it hard' kinda ending...

I cried the whole entire episode bc i knew the miscarriage (i read spoilers on soompi forums) was coming and was really hoping it wouldn't come. Gosh, Jang Nara and Jang Hyuk are doing such a great job with these characters. When they cry, I cry, when they laugh, i laugh and the part where Mi Young was reading the diary..ugh i don't even want to envision it again bc i'll start crying again. I almost started crying reading this recap, it affected me so much. I just hope MY keeps her gentle, caring side, but also stand up for herself more. I'm afraid of her becoming mean or something. First things first.

Gunnie's hair! Thank you!! =)

I am seeing Jang Hyuk and Jang Na Ra for the first time with this drama, and that makes me feel like I've been cheated out of an awesome experience. These two are pros!

It's amazing how a slight change in Gun's facial expression can bring out all the feels in the world. When he was trying to hold back his tears, I couldn't hold back mine. And Mi Young? I can't even. When she was crying over losing her baby, I was bawling like one. Never have I been so emotionally invested in a drama before. And I have seen/liked/loved the original version.

It's like I already know what's going to happen, but I still feel like I'm on one heck of a roller coaster ride, blindfolded. So I give mad props to the writers for making something old feel like something new without taking away its charm.

Also if the is gonna be a love triangle make it a real one. Not one where she is beyond inlove with Gun and just with daniel out of graditude but not really with daniel at all. I want conflict where she truly has to make a choice and hurt for losing one to gain the other. Out of respect to Daniel...he deserves for her to have been in-love with him too if they are gonna be a couple no matter how brief.

Yesss I expected a more stylish Mi Young but yesss that haircut for Gun was long overdue. It does makes him seem less Gun-like though.

Still have yet to watch this weeks episodes, but oof, that is heartbreaking. I saw the miscarriage coming, but the aftermath of when Mom doesn't treat Gun with hate but gently breaking reality to him is fresh, though sad.

If episode 11 was a slap to the face, episode 12 is a roundhouse kick to the chest.

I mean, DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN.

Noble Idiocy, you have reared your ugly head. If I had a sword, I would take it out and SLAY YOU!

But you know what? I've accepted it. I've moved on. The amnesia pissed me off to no end, but I also knew we were going to need something to get us to the next arc of the story (the loss of the baby and Mi Young going off to, this time Paris, to find herself). Amnesia and noble idiocy were apparently the only way the drama writers could see fit to get us there.

So fine, drama writers. I see your amnesia and noble idiocy, and I raise you My expectations for the best drama ending to have ever ended.

Play your next hand well.

My least favorite things about this episode? That. Red. Hair. And the fact that the writers decided to make her be gone for THREE YEARS!!! I know in the original she was gone for two, but I was really hoping they would only make her gone for one in this version.

I do like that the reason she chose to leave wasn’t because Gun was pushing her away, but because she was tired of giving and giving and giving and feeling like she wasn't getting anything back (currently in a place in my life where I Completely understand that feeling). And because she felt like fate was saying they weren’t meant to be together. Because let's be honest. Fate hasn't been particularly easy on the two of them. I would probably feel like I've been stretched pretty thin at this point. I can understand why she would want to give up.

I'm still fully invested in this drama. In fact, this episode actually brought me back around after I spent most of the last episode completely pissed off at everyone. Don't get me wrong, I still HATE Gun right now. But I'm also totally in it for his Second redemption.

Because noble idiocy is an act that requires a lot of penance in order for me to forgive it. I want him begging on his knees.

I'll buy a sword if I have to.

Even though I read the Taiwanese manga and I knew the baby wouldn't make it I just didn't expect them showing her when she found out. It was too much for my baby loving heart. Though it is different from the manga of FTLY it did have it similarities and I respect that. So this show... I dig it. ?

In my opinion this Korea version is much better than the original. especially becuz they change the male lead character. geez I don't know how many times i did want to slap and punch the male lead in original version until he realized that he fcking in love with the female lead when she went abroad. I was like"See..in your face dude! that's the right pay you have to get becuz you have ignored your wife from the whole episode 1- episode 12" in original version for him his wife is only a woman who trapped him and ruined his relationship with his ballerina girlfriend..even he did not much care with the fetus. Here LG's character is not a jerk and asshole like the original version..therefore there is only one possible way to separate the couple and then they meet again after several years for the second fate..which is his genetic disease..yeah noble idiocy. but is much more reasonable than seeing a jerk and asshole man who ignored his wife and fetus from the beginning until he realized he fcking in love with her after all the tragedy happened.

Agree Agree.. haven't seen original but as per this one..

the original plotline would have never made sense for Gun has been shown to be very mature and responsible..

and for him who holds his promises dear, they couldn't have just randomly made him ask kim meon young to leave..or more importantly..for her to begin distancing herself from him..

she would always give him benefit of doubt...

I totally agree with you, that is why I was commenting that this version has justified it well using scenes that will explain hidden reasons of the character rather than resorting to misundertandings and guessings in order to separate the couple. And the actings here are really superb , the plot is the same with some changes on the executions of the twist but what made it so so so tragic to the superlative degree were the superb actings. I've never done so much sobbings while watching a drama. The breakdowns were really.... my gosh esp the last one of jang nara, you will really breakdown with her.

Im torn on one hand they would make a great couple but then again knowing it couldnt last and Daniel getting hurt in the end is not worth it, also if they had a close relationship that people misunderstood that could also be enough to make Gun jealous never knowing for sure, and you know Daniel will be making comments that make him assume things.

doesnt mean to compare, but the scene where min young lose the baby wasnt as touching as when i watched the taiwan version. mannnn, i watch it like 2 3 years ago, but i can still remember the scene in the taiwan version to be so emotional and soooooo sad. i cried till i hiccup.

i can forgive the genetic disease cliche, so plz make the second half of this drama bettteerrrrr

I don't know if I'll be able to forgive Gun for not being there for Miyoung when she needed him the most. Even if he was still determined to end the marriage, he still should have taken some time to mourn with Mi-young and comfort each other. He is literally the only person on the planet who knows what she is going through right now. He should have been there, not so much because he is her husband, but because he is Keddongie's father.

As brilliant as the OST has been for this show, that long, silent pause after Mi Young is hit was the best bit of sound directing so far. We were left alone with our emotions just like Gun was in that horrible minute. I think I screamed a little with that happened even though I saw it coming a mile away (as soon as she started having revelations in the middle of the crosswalk, I know a Vehicle of Doom was on the way).

Oh mah gawd ! I watched the TW version and yet I still bawled my eyes out. K-dramas have always laid it thick on heavy-accented gestures so Gun's character, in that sense, is very K-drama-ish. But it bears testimony to JH's acting that despite me knowing what would happen, and despite the cliched plot, I still bawled ! For those who said that the TW's version draws out the relationship and the miscarriage and the time lapse better...please be reminded that this drama is not going to be a 30-parter

@sarahaelmh. That is a good point in reference to the airport scene. Your comment just struck a chord with me. There are so many hidden (read between the lines) messages that the writers have placed in this series. At first I thought that he was running to the airport to stop her from leaving after seeing her mom at the restaurant because of impulse. Now that I think about it, when he was talking to her mom at the restaurant, he did ask the mom if he could see Mi Young one last time. Maybe he found out from the doctor before then that it was confirmed he did not have the disease, therefore he asked the mom to see Mi Young "one last time" because he wanted to try to redeem himself then, apologize to her, and get her back. Now we will see how it all unfolds. I'm not saying my prediction is correct at all, because anything can happen in this series. It would be interesting to get more explanation about that. Anyway, I'm excited for "part 2" and can't wait to see Gun chasing after her, especially now that she will be a more confident and stronger woman. Mi Young... you go girl! The ball is in your court now. :)

Also, I just have to mention that Jang Hyuk is a great actor. His facial expressions just show so much of his emotion and thoughts. In this episode especially, there was so much feeling explained without the use of words. My favorite part is definitely at the end in airport when he takes off his sun glasses and ponders that there was something familiar about the woman he just crossed paths with. It then seems like he realizes he thinks it's Mi Young, until Secretary Tak totally interfered with that moment... but gotta love Tak's upbeat attitude. :)

The way to enjoy this drama is not focusing on the plot but focusing on the characters and their emotions.

None of its plots are new, and the drama never claimed to be new. It literally collected all possible cliche situations. But it gives a little twist here and there to characters.
A chaebol male lead is a cliche, but we've never seen a drama queen chaebol like this. Chaebol granny loves the grandaughter in law. The evil step mother (or the mistress) actually turns out that she led a hard life living in half basement house. Etc. And they throw these characters in cliche situation and see how they deal with it. And that's what this show does a beautiful job in.

None of Ep11 or Ep12 had new or brilliant plot twists, and in fact I almost accurately guessed how exactly it will flow, almost scene to scene. But the reason I thought these were so beautiful was because of the way the characters spoke, behaved, and looked at each other. In the cliche situations, where expected cliche responses would be bawling and screaming and saying horrible stuffs (even if he doesn't mean it) and crying some more, the characters took it with dignity, stayed calm and sane, and went through this in their characters, that's what made me impressed.

There were a lot of moments but if I have to choose one, it's when they decide to break up, right before the accident. When Gun is saying 'harsh words' to MY, trying to break up, those words are actually not harsh at all. He doesn't insult her or says something horrible. In fact his words are all words of concern. He is still in character of warm, considerate Gun, and at the same time you can tell he is trying really hard to be 'harsh' to meet his purpose.

And what's truly marvelous is that MY acknowledges it. She says "You don't have to say those harsh words. I have decided, I will leave." Isn't it amazing that she KNEW that Gun had to TRY to say harsh words? I can't even fathom the deepness of their understandings of each other.

So here, we see the cliche noble idiocy, but it's not only out of misunderstanding and resentment that this couple end up breaking up. They have 'decided' and 'agreed' that things are not going to work out between them (no matter what the real reason is behind, that's their surface agreement) and are not overly dramatic about it. I just LOVED how they said goodbye on street. Wishing each other happiness. Saying thank you for wonderful time you gave me. We will not see each other again, but I won't hold grudge against you, you gave me wonderful memories. Don't be too nice, don't be timid, be confident. Sending those messages to each other, that was one of the most beautiful break up I've ever seen.

Ad comes the tragic accident, and it was such a loss, and the main couple suffered so much from it. But the twist I liked in this drama was that the accident and the lost was not the sole reason this couple broke up. It wasn't a forced upon thing caused...

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

...continued from above.
It wasn't a forced upon thing caused by evil second lead. The couple already 'decided' on their own before the accident ever happened.

And ooh I can't even stress enough how I LOVED how MY held on to Gun one last time, asking if they can start over again. Shows MY's intention to be his woman, take him as her man, without the tie of a child. Just as a man and woman, loving each other. She was brave in saying that, and Gun's face when he had to say no knowing she would get hurt and he would get hurt, it was just priceless. (I know there's a debate on noble idiocy. But I think the drama provided with the basis of his decision, and it's just the matter of whether you agree or not, not whether you understand him or not. We know 'why' he did that, it's just that some of us can't agree that's the right decision, which is totally legit and it's just difference in opinion).

And I also LOVED (am I over using capitalized loved? lol) how MY deciding to leave Korea was not out of resentment, not out of anger or blame. She states that it was no one's fault, they were just not meant to be. What a wise woman to actually see it right in that it was no one's fault, when she had to go through all that. She just wanted to leave, because all her life she has been pushed into situations and just kind of forced to live along like that. She's tired of it and she wants to lead her own life. Totally deserving respect, this woman. I love her.

Not to mention that I love Gun sooo much. I'm just not gonna state it here cuz I've got a feeling this comment is getting way longer than I intended to.

But just one clarification, Gun didn't run after MY to the airport to get back together with her. He said he wanted to see her for the last time, and Mom told him she was gone to France. He just wanted to see her and say good bye once more. When he cries out Snail!! at the airport, after that, he mutters. Snail..Good bye.

Ok this is wayyyy too long and I don't even remember how I started this comment. But yes the point is that, this drama is not meant to be enjoyed in its plot lines. It's a drama where you are supposed to enjoy how characters act and react, how they treat each other and feel the emotion. So to everyone whom the cliche plots are bothering and disappointing, maybe give it a chance and lower all your expectation in terms of 'plot' and 'items' that you can, and focus on characters emotions...? If that's not the way you enjoy a drama, well then ok I can't force you to enjoy a drama :P continue being disappointed...but I'm finding this drama a true gem, very well made with high quality. Just that it's area of specialty is different.

maybe it shorter to say good actors and direction can and will always make those famous cliche simply work!
There was once an idea a good actor given a chance can make any role work..something sadly lacking in many dramas these days, perhaps too many Idol leads with out the skill yet to make something out of nothing.

Wow. I loved your comment, Gumi.

(Though I do think that when it comes to drama queen-ish chaebols, Hyun Bin's Kim Joo Won from Secret Garden is right up there with Gun in madcap antics. But since I'm no K-Drama veteran, this is a debate for another day).

I read this recap immediately after I'd finished watching the episode, when my mind was terribly messed-up. So just a while back, I steeled my heart, had some Bournvita and re-watched it (I solemnly promise I'm no masochist) with a calmer, more objective mind, and yes, I agree with everything you've said about FTLY, it's characters, and the unique charm that it has. Heck, I've known the basic plot and the major twists for days, and yet, I couldn't take my eyes off the wonderful interactions between Gun and MY this episode, despite how painful they were. Such utter beauty in the midst of a tornado of dramatic misfortunes. I started tearing up from that last pre-natal class itself....they just HAD to mirror those earlier scenes in such a bitter-sweet manner, didn't they?

Do want to point out one thing, however. I think one of the main reasons for our conflicted views on these last two-and-a-half episodes is the fact that the show has ALREADY made Mi-Young and Gun perfect for each other, and shown it to us. Unlike the original, where the guy is initially a douche and the girl is incredibly pathetic, FTLY hasn't left much scope for a drastic change in the two leads. Gun doesn't need to change HIMSELF per sé in order to get MY back, and MY has been shown to have been brave enough to make her own choices in life. In a way, it's rather nice since the fate-factor should come into play in a big way again, with his disease and all, but it also leaves the writers treading a very, very thin line with the character transformations, since their Act-1 versions were so intensely loved that no one is sure why they need any change at all.

Plots or storyline are always the same when it comes to rom com, drama , heavy drama but what makes me hold on or drop a series are the great actings and executions of the story. Plus I don't like the new hair at the end - for both of them! Ugh. MY looks so old now. And Gun like a gay fashion stylist (I don't mean to offend anyone, but I don't know how to put it in a better way also).

I hope Gun saw that stupid contract Se Ra faked. I was semi-rooting for her (not shipping her with Gun, but just hoping she'll be strong and not evil) until that point.

I don't get why he can't admit that he tried to break up with her because of his fear of the disease. And didn't Dr. Octopus say that if he regains his memory, it's probably stress-related than onset of the disease itself? Gee.

Waaah...loved it...so my 2 cents

1. A big ROFL on doctors - so tell me..its not even a 6-7 month baby but just a 3 month baby...how the hell the question could be about saving either the mom or the baby....if mom dies..baby dies anyway..whose uterus were they going to find to fit the baby back in :D ..

2. MAN..I LOVE THE NEW HAIRCUT... he is so much sexier...shoo shoo shoo min young..go with daniel..i will have gun all to myself..

3. On the noble idiocy..i think i actually get it..

The idea is.. if you die and leave, you think you are putting your loved one through so much pain..without being there to take care of things when going gets really tough..

Alternately, when you advance this process of pain while being alive...it allows you to make sure ( rather be able to see for yourself and thus die in peace) that the other person learnt to live with the pain..or best case ..moved on...

this noble idiocy is more of a selfish thing than doing good for the other..or maybe it is good ..

because moving on from someone who betrayed you is easier..than cheating on dead lover's..

hope 'm making sense there.. :)

can't wait for new eps..

I am actually impressed by the number of comments compared to the other two dramas on at the same time. Considering this one had the lower view rating but has the higher comment count. Haha. Doesn't prove anything but out of all three I seem to be more emotionally invested in this one.

Thanks much HeadsNo2 for this episode recap and for your reflection on Lee Gun's reason(s) for cutting ties with Kim Mi-Young. I don't know what those reasons are but I thought I saw agony in LG's face as he was ending the relationship with KMY at the restaurant. LG appeared to be holding back a lot of strong emotions (and tears ) during that conversation with KMY.

Like everyone, I felt sad over the loss of Keddongie. Through KMY's voice and baby diary, I thought I've come to know and adore him/her. Good job, writers and Jang Nara! I'll take comfort in imagining Keddongie is in Heaven and will play "Cupid" for his/her parents. For sure Keddongie will do an excellent job in reuniting his/her parents. Who dares to oppose "Fate"? :-)

And how about Lee Gun's new and handsome hairdo! Of course, I also noticed KMY's red hair (albeit I agree with many in saying it could use a little bit more styling)! I can hardly wait for next week's episodes and see how these new transformations will bring back the funny and OTP love. Dear writers, please hear our plea! :-)

I watched the Taiwanese version of the drama and let's just say that I was hoping that the amnesia was the writers way around what happened in this episode, gah. Well let's see what happens next. Oh anND what happened to Gun's hair? So sad.

i've noticed that FTLY fans are really devoted. like reeeeallyyyy devoted lol.

anyway....for all intent and purpose of this drama, i try not to take it too seriously, but when it gets as dark as it did here, it does raise some eyebrows. i guess the reason i've been able to look past the majority of the cliches and terrible use of some plot devices, is because they're obviously using them to advance the plot in a way that falls in line with the original. the problem with creating such different characters (from comparisons i've read between the tw version and korean version), is that the characters then have different motivations and you have to come up with different things to justify it. if he was a jerk in the original and it drove her away, but gun was so loving here, then they have to make him into a noble idiot jerk to push her away. i'm not saying it's a good way to do it, but i can understand why the writers did it. could they have done something better? heck yes. why not? beats me, since i thought they've been doing so well, so it was a little disappointing to see. and i could do without the whole genetic disease since that wasn't even in the original and it's just a lot of useless angst here.

remakes are so tricky because you have certain plot points to hit, but you also want to make it your own, and if you just drop half the original plot or omit a crucial event then it wouldn't be a remake, would it? funny thing with FTLY is that, if this were any other drama, i'd be less forgiving, but the fact that it is a remake just....explains soooo much. it's cliche-ridden with outrageous story lines that sometimes make me go "what why how did you even get to that??" but at the same time, it's such a throwback to older rom-coms with some new comedic twist that it still hits me in the gut, like in the best way. a lot of it has to do with execution. above all, it's the characters they've created that have a strong hold over me. if i didn't LOVE LOVE LOVE mi-young and gun (both individually and together), i would've ditched show like 3 episodes ago and pretend it ended there. i can't call fated a great show, but it is wildly addicting for reasons i can't quite pinpoint. what it has though, are two solid leads that take their characters and the entire drama to new heights.

i'm really curious and excited to see how the rest will play out. like how do you recover from those kind of emotional scars and get back together? has gun changed his mind?? i mean, you pushed her away 3 years ago, what's the difference now? i am so ready for gun to grovel and work twice as hard to get her back. bring back that rom-com fluff i loved so much in the beginning. it's only fair after all this pain!

on the shallow side, i love gun's new hair as much as the next person, but i'm really going to miss his flamboyant hair twirl; that hair just made gun, well, gun.

Also, just reading and backtracking comments--Boxed-in's comment up there i think, really captured the problem the writers sort of created for themselves in this remake.

"...it also leaves the writers treading a very, very thin line with the character transformations, since their Act-1 versions were so intensely loved that no one is sure why they need any change at all."

They were so great from the get-go, unlike in the original where the feelings were wishy washy, so it's hard for us to swallow why we have to go through this separation stage and then get back together. I get it, it's how the story goes, but I'm also glad they didn't paint them in the same light as the original version because I probably wouldn't want them back together.

Actually, the genetic disease issue was in the original. But instead of a genetic disease, it was just some never explained medical issue that all the men of the family suffered from. And then the plot point sort of disappeared halfway through the drama.

Hmm....that's interesting. I wonder if they'll do that here. It'll look like a contrived plot device to reach a purpose either way... because they use it, and once it's done its job they just forget about it?? It makes me feel emotionally robbed over something that ended up not being a big deal anyway. I'm not a fan of it, but I guess, when in Rome....

I guess I've learned to accept some things for what they are despite my brain telling me not to settle. But. This. Show. It's such a complicated feeling I can't describe when I love the show despite my better judgement. It's literally my crack drama, but I want it to go back to its previous high! When everything was sugary sweet.

Nope.. the genetic disease was not in the TW original plot. Yes, the males of the family die young.. but not from medical issues but more to unfortunate events or some say curse. it's more of a joke actually, they came out with this 'die young' idea to point out the lead male as the sole heir to the family, nothing more to it.. so i see no purpose for the TW original to elaborate on this matter and i'm glad they didnt.

Possible Spoiler *it is said the curse was broken in the Ji family after his wife finally managed to conceive not one but two boys.. yay*

Recaps are a godsend--did not watch ep 11 or 12. Had two miscarriages, and this wouldn't be cathartic. I like my stakes light in a rom-com, or like I Hear Your Voice, where high stakes are clear from the get-go

But here's my question, which I hope someone will answer. Isn't this makjang? We have threat of degenerative fatal disease, amnesia, car accident of doom, noble idiocy, evil second lead high jinks, miscarriage...at least mom's restaurant wasn't foreclosed and sweet grandmother didn't break her hip, but....

If it ISNT makjang (by internal rules), WHY isn't it? I need to understand! Cause I'm doing my own time-skip and want return to watching till next week!

lol i don't know the exact line between a makjang and not-a-makjang, but it's really treading that line, isn't it? i guess if you've ever seen a makjang (like 'Temptation of Wife' or something--i don't recommend going there, by the way), it's pretty clear that this has makjang tendencies rather being full on makjang. it definitely doesn't help that they've condensed all the major makjang problems into two episodes for the sake of advancing the plot, but i would argue where it falls short of being a makjang is that the characters are still pretty grounded. like, the extremes have happened, mostly by circumstance, but no one reacted in an extreme way that led to more extremes. (maybe except a bad bout of noble idiocy, GUUUN!)

LOL does that make sense?? like in a makjang, something bad would happen, and then some character would do something drastic, and then it'd lead to something else drastic, and it keeps spiraling.

If the original version had been a Korean drama, it would most certainly have been a makjang. That's why there are definite makjang elements to this version. But I wouldn't consider this drama makjang just because of how it treats the makjang elements. It's aware that they are makjang, and it doesn't take them too seriously. It's done a pretty good job of grounding the makjang elements in reality.

It's kind of like when a writer decides to write a story Purposely using all the most cliche elements you can find in order to turn those cliche's upside down. That's what these writers are doing.

That's just my take, anyway.

I'm stunned....
This week's episodes gave me something which I really did not see coming at all....
I am still reeling from the shock of
1)The peak of noble idiocy Gun has achieved,
2)Mi Young going out of country....and the three years gap......
The fact that Gun made the contract in favour of Mi Young in case anything happens to him--made me so happy....
then why would he be mean towards her....even after they lost their Kkedongie???---The fact is really beyond me....
Just praying that these two better be with each other in the next episodes or I'll start having fits...
But even after all the tears FTLY has given us this week,I am not at all disappointed as the show is going great and is really keeping us hooked.....
Good Luck for the next week.

He didn't tell her the truth and instead let her go because knowing Mi Young's personality, she WILL INSIST

He chose to be cruel because knowing Mi Young, SHE WILL INSIST on staying beside him once she found out about his illness. And it will take a lot of strength in him to push her away when the critical time comes. I totally agree with toonnoot that Huntington's disease is a curse. In its early stages, it already affects the mood, mental state and decision making of the victim. I guess part of that has already affected Gun, although it hasn't really hit him square in the face. He chose to think logical, knowing MY is surrounded with good people and a supporting family, it would be more beneficial for her to deal with the circumstances early on, rather than suffer later. That she has a better chance in life, to make her stronger. Fine, she can stay with him if he wanted to, but then if he dies, it will be another blow. Think of the memories they will have during the time they are together only to be separated by death. At least, if she thinks Gun no longer likes her, it will be easier to heal a broken heart and eventually if she learns that Gun has passed on, it will hurt, yes but she is a stronger person at least by then. So Gun is probably thinking, why prolong the agony? Just saying

...Deep despair...I am broken, to see Lee Gun's heart being torn by the words of MiYoung saying "You were a good husband...no, you never made me cry. That has been his intention all along, to protect her and take responsibility.

i'm glad they didnt follow the way TW version handle the miscarriage.. it was graphic and BRUTAL in the TW version.. blood all over the place and the hospital scene? Were like hell. many people who watched those scenes literally fell sick, some had to take medical leave (i kid you not) .. glad we didnt have to go through that again in K-version because it is more subtle and rational. i'm looking forward to the next chapter, this is where the plot takes a completely different path from TW's because the separation was due to different reasons while harboring different emotions. (sorry my english sux)
