Discovery of Romance: Episode 3

It’s an episode chock-full of flashbacks as we learn how Tae-ha and Yeo-reum fell in love, and why Ha-jin is obsessed with finding a girl with a certain scar. It becomes a little clearer why Tae-ha hasn’t been able to let go, and why Ha-jin has a hard time opening up. Yeo-reum has quite the decision to make, the lucky girl.

EPISODE 3 RECAP

After Yeo-reum refuses his job offer Tae-ha pulls her chair close, brackets her with his arms, and says, “Han Yeo-reum, if I ask you to break up with that guy and come to me, would you? If you come back to me, I promise I won’t make you cry.” He says that he’s never forgotten one single thing, from the time they met to the time they broke up, all at Jinju Station.

We flash back to the day they met, as they introduce themselves after their train ride. It’s cute how they’re both reluctant to walk away, and finally Tae-ha goes, but stops to look back and wave one more time. Joon-ho and Sol find Yeo-reum, and she aegyos Joon-ho into buying them tickets to Yeonhwa Island, where she knows Tae-ha is heading next.

Sol is still in a bad mood and flat refuses to board the ferry, since she’d rather go see her boyfriend before he joins the army, so Yeo-reum swipes her ticket and goes on without them. Joon-ho tries to drag Sol onto the boat but she bites him and runs off, and he follows her despite knowing that Yeo-reum has no money to buy a ticket back.

Yeo-reum finds Tae-ha on the ferry and tries the old “what a coincidence” line, but he’s all I told you I was going to Yeonhwa Island before. Hee. She waxes poetic about their meeting each other being the hand of Fate, but Tae-ha is pragmatic (though amused) as he just says it depends how you look at it.

Yeo-reum doesn’t realize her friends missed the ferry until they arrive at the island, and Tae-ha suggests she climb up the mountain and see the sunset as long as she’s here. She trails behind him like a kid and asks him to lend her some money, because that was the last ferry and she has no money to sleep somewhere or catch tomorrow’s ferry home.

Tae-ha gets suspicious, and asks if she told him she fell in love with him on the train just to get some money out of him. Yeo-reum insists that’s not the case, but now he doesn’t believe her. Optionless, she follows him as he takes pictures of the amazing scenery, swearing to stop following him if he lends her money. He says with a mischievous grin that he can’t lend her any money since then she’d leave. Cheeky boy.

Yeo-reum clings to the railing of a narrow bridge, still begging Tae-ha to help her out. He starts asking personal questions like her age and what school she attends, clearly using her disadvantage to learn more about her. He even plays with her a little by jumping on the bridge and making it shake, and freaking her out. He’s like a little boy pulling the pigtails of the girl he likes.

They finally reach the top of the mountain right at sunset and wow, the view is incredible. Yeo-reum says that she learned a valuable lesson today: Don’t trust a man you fall in love with at first sight. HA. Tae-ha laughs that saying such things out loud gives him an advantage, but Yeo-reum just nods sagely and asks for money now that she’s looked at the damned nature like he wanted. Tae-ha deadpans that the ATM is at the bottom of the mountain, and Yeo-reum yells at him for making her hike all this way.

When they get back down the mountain, the ATM is out of service and won’t be repaired until the next afternoon. Well, crap. Yeo-reum buys some ramyun but she’s a few won short, and it’s hilarious how Tae-ha oh-so-generously fronts her the 100 won. They share the ramyun and a local tells them where to find a school so they can sleep indoors.

They set up beds in a schoolroom (I love how Tae-ha gets the pink blanket and flowery pillow), each warning the other to stay on their side of the room. Yeo-reum freaks out when she hears noises that sound like mice, and asks if she can scoot her bed closer to Tae-ha, promising not to try anything on him. I love his shocked-yet-interested expression. He asks if she’s not scared of men, and she gives him her best martial arts pose when he teasingly leans in close to her face.

She hears mice again and asks to hold his hand while they sleep and, being a smart man who knows a good thing when he sees it, he obliges. A bit overwhelmed, Yeo-reum asks Tae-ha if he feels the same thing she’s feeling – something electrifying, but also warm and blooming.

Yeo-reum blames the ramyun, but Tae-ha says it’s not that… it’s the start of something new. She asks what’s starting, and he says it’s something people call love. He gives her a big grin, and she tries to pull her hand away but he takes it back and says he likes holding it. Long after he’s asleep, Yeo-reum lies awake processing her new feelings. So cute, these two.

Back in the present, Tae-ha tells Yeo-reum that unlike her, all of his memories are of the good times they shared. With a faraway expression, he remembers things like her honesty and easy smile. He stares at her lips as he says he remembers how they feel, and good lord, this woman must have nerves of steel because I don’t know how she resists his intensity.

Then Tae-ha teases her for getting flustered and says he knows she has no intention of coming back to him. He points out that she has a boyfriend and obviously isn’t affected by him, so she’s got no reason to refuse his job offer. He breezes that to be honest, he doesn’t really want to get back with her and warns her not to let her feelings get in the way of business… wait, now I see how she resists him. Jerk.

After Tae-ha leaves, Yeo-reum complains interview-style that Tae-ha has always been like that – he likes to play with people. We go back to ten years ago when they met, when he finally gets some money from the repaired ATM and teases her with it. He refuses to give her any because then she’ll leave, and he runs from her as she gives chase.

In the present again, Tae-ha tells us that the only way he can think to get Yeo-reum back is to prick her pride. Just like when they first met, she’ll chase him if he runs away from her.

Ten years ago on the island (ouch, I’m getting whiplash), Tae-ha buys himself a huge meal and finally gives Yeo-reum some money. He ignores her whining and invites her to spend the day with him, deflating her anger by saying he doesn’t want to part from her yet.

They go on a boat ride and take pictures, and Tae-ha isn’t above taking advantage of the waves to catch Yeo-reum whenever she loses her balance. Later they go for a walk holding hands (so cute how Tae-ha keeps pointing out that they’re holding hands) and he gives her a pretty rock shaped like a heart. He steals a kiss on her forehead when Yeo-reum isn’t looking, making her shy.

They find a pair of trees that have grown together, and smile that they’re together, just like the trees. Yeo-reum tells the tree to stay where it is, because it makes people comfortable and secure, and she promises to always treat wood respectfully when she makes furniture.

In the present (for the last time), Joon-ho brings Ha-jin a drink he ordered, and confirms that the juice delivery girl is named Ahn Ah-rim. He asks what Ha-jin’s relationship is with her, but they’re interrupted when Yeo-reum comes to visit. She jokingly asks if they can improve her face to look like Kim Tae-hee, and Joon-ho is all Nope, beyond help. Ha-jin is a good boyfriend and says she’s already prettier than Kim Tae-hee.

After Joon-ho goes back to work, Ha-jin sits Yeo-reum down to have a serious talk. He asks if it wouldn’t be nice to have a friend always waiting at home for you after a long day at work – this friend would never go home, and nobody would think it was strange for them to stay all night long. Rather than think it was odd for you and your friend to be together all the time, people would think it was normal and even be jealous. He says that’s how he thinks of marriage, as he gets on one knee and offers her a ring.

A scream echoes through the clinic (and scares off a patient, ha), bringing Joon-ho running. Yeo-reum tells him that Ha-jin proposed, but Ha-jin is still waiting for an answer. Yeo-reum sadly closes the ring box and says that it’s not a rejection, it’s just a bad time. Aww, poor Ha-jin puppy.

Later Yeo-reum, Sol, and Joon-ho discuss things, and Joon-ho points out that if she married Ha-jin she’d be out from under her mother’s thumb. Yeo-reum says that it’s not that simple – it would hurt her pride, and Ha-jin’s mother is still against them. Sol’s only input is to moon over her ex-boyfriend Eun-kyu and how much she misses him. Well, how helpful.

The three of them sit down with Yeo-reum’s mother, who tallies up how much they owe her from a loan to start the furniture business, including their rent for living in the house. Yeo-reum owes so much she’ll never catch up, and not even nudging her friends into speaking up for her can soften Mom’s penny-pinching heart. When the subject of rent comes up, Mom says she knows Yeo-reum’s been sleeping at Ha-jin’s and warns her to be careful about birth control. Sol, too. Yikes, Mom!

Yeo-reum tells her mother that Ha-jin proposed but she declined because she has no money. Mom still doesn’t budge as she tells her to just confess to him that she’s broke and go sign papers, no wedding necessary. Yeo-reum’s eyes well up as she asks why her mother is so meeean, only to wipe them away with a sigh when her crocodile tears fail. HA.

Her friends correctly guess that Mom told Yeo-reum she was on her own, and Sol declares that she knows the answer to Yeo-reum’s money problem: Kang Tae-ha. Or more specifically, Tae-ha’s job offer. Taking the job would pay off her debt and besides, it’s not like she still has feelings for him, right? Sol says there’s even a bonus in that she could get revenge on Tae-ha by getting married with the money he pays her.

The next day Tae-ha texts Yeo-reum to go take a look at the bar they want decorated, and prepare a design presentation. Yeo-reum says she’s not going, but Sol’s creepy face changes her mind. The building turns out to be beautiful, and the girls can’t help but get excited about the possibility of designing furniture for it. That night Yeo-reum tells Ha-jin about the exciting business opportunity, and he gives her his support.

Hard at work, Yeo-reum’s mother talks back to characters in a drama, calling them stupid, to the frustration of her assistant Gi-eun who points out that she wrote them, ha. Producer Bae lets himself in, and Gi-eun says she feels sorry for him but Mom is more interested in discussing whether she should have her characters kiss again (in my opinion, the answer is always yes).

Ha-jin finds Ah-rim at one of her jobs, and thinks back to a time when he was a child, hiding in the woods with his little sister. They had been orphans and his sister was going to be adopted, so he had run away with her. He promises her that when they go back, they’ll stay together.

Ah-rim passes out from hunger and Ha-jin carries her all night to find help, but he trips and she rolls down a hill and into a chain-link fence. The fence cuts her arm badly, but Ha-jin manages to carry Ah-rim back to the orphanage (where interestingly, the nuns refer to him as Jin-soo). Ha-jin fiercely protects his sister, telling the nuns that he knows if he gives her to them she’ll be adopted… but even though they seem moved, they take her from him anyway.

Yeo-reum wakes Ha-jin from his nightmare about his sister, and he feels bad for waking her but she says they’ll get through this together. They go out in their pajamas to play and run off their insomnia, and when they’ve exhausted themselves Yeo-reum asks about Ha-jin’s nightmares. He swears it’s nothing but she doesn’t believe him.

Ha-jin loosens up enough to tell her that when he was young he did something wrong to someone, and that he dreams about them sometimes. Yeo-reum says that she heard that someone who has frequent nightmares is a good person, and he promises that he’ll tell her about the nightmares soon.

The next morning Joon-ho comments on Yeo-reum sneaking in early in the morning, and tells her that Sol was up all night drinking and crying about her ex. They commiserate on what a lost cause Sol is over this guy, until she comes in the room and they clam up, terrified of her. Oh man, Sol has lost it – she slinks up to Yeo-reum and Joon-ho quoting “Gangnam Style” and grousing, “Where is there a woman like that?!” Afraid for his life, Joon-ho agrees with her that men are all bastards.

Sol lives out her own little drama scene as she does all the things she used to do with Eun-kyu, which would be fine if she didn’t text the poor guy a play-by-play of the whole thing. Later she complains to Yeo-reum and Joon-ho about missing him, and tells them she figured out why Eun-kyu never slept with her – her boobs are too small. HAHAHA. Joon-ho offers to do implants for her, but Sol says she’d rather Ha-jin did them (causing Yeo-reum to do a spit-take).

Tae-ha visits Yeo-reum and Sol at work and invites them out for a drink, and Sol perks up at the word “bar” so off they go. He takes them to a place with a similar concept to the wine bar he’s building, and they settle in to listen to the band.

The singer says it’s time to pick out an audience member to come up and sing, and of course he picks Yeo-reum who bravely goes onstage to sing Toy’s “Every Time You Do That.” Sol answers her phone when Ha-jin calls, and she hesitates to tell him where they are since Tae-ha is with them, but she eventually caves. She gives Tae-ha a heads-up that Ha-jin is on the way, and tells him to keep it a secret that he and Yeo-reum used to date.

Yeo-reum sings as Tae-ha watches, not even trying to hide the adoring expression on his face. He thinks back on their dating days and realizes that he knows why he hasn’t been able to forget her… just because she was herself, Han Yeo-reum.

Ha-jin enters the bar, and stands near Tae-ha as he watches Yeo-reum sing with a huge grin on his face. Tae-ha sees him and thinks that this man has Yeo-reum and, while he’s not exactly jealous, he’s curious if this man knows what a great woman he has.

As Tae-ha watches Ha-jin watching Yeo-reum, he realizes that he does know how special she is. At that moment Ha-jin looks over, and the smile leaves his face as he recognizes Tae-ha from that night at the hotel when Yeo-reum crashed his blind date. He remembers Yeo-reum confessing that this is the man at whose house she spent the night.

Confronted with their competition for the first time, the two men glare at each other as Yeo-reum looks up and notices the stare-off.

COMMENTS

I really enjoyed that we got so many questions answered in this episode, rather than making us wait a few more weeks with mysteries hanging over our heads. It’s good to know that Ha-jin’s search for a girl with a scar is about his sister and not some long-lost first love. I want him to be a stand-up guy and I was worried he would have some dark secret to hide that could hurt Yeo-reum. Knowing that he’s only searching for the only family he’s ever known is a relief, not to mention heartbreaking, and it explains a lot about how he’s reluctant to open up to people since he lost the one person in his life that he’s loved.

I loved seeing how Tae-ha and Yeo-reum fell for each other, and watching them navigate that whole first-attraction minefield was a lot of fun. Props to Eric and Jung Yumi for differentiating their young carefree selves from their current adults-with-adult-problems selves… you can really feel how they grew and matured over the years since they met. The whole flashback to their island first date was so cute, and it’s interesting how, even though Yeo-reum confessed first, Tae-ha wasn’t far behind her. He had her number from the very beginning, and knew that the way to get her wasn’t to give her what she wanted, but to make her come to him.

It says a lot that Tae-ha has known how to be with Yeo-reum from the very beginning, as opposed to Ha-jin who is still trying to figure her out after a year of dating. It’s also interesting to see that their relationship was contentious from the start – Tae-ha has always poked at Yeo-reum’s pride and Yeo-reum has always responded with affectionate frustration. When they broke up, they hadn’t really changed how they related to each other, it’s just that for some reason Yeo-reum began taking his teasing as a sign that Tae-ha wasn’t interested anymore. I wonder what happened to make her change her reactions to him, when he never treated her any differently.

The main thing I took away from this episode is the difference in Yeo-reum’s relationships with the two men in her life. Her relationship with Ha-jin is so sweet and supportive, and I have no doubt that he loves her, but I sometimes get the sense that Yeo-reum feels more friendship for him than anything else. There’s definitely attraction, but it’s more the kind of attraction you feel towards someone you can be yourself around, than the kind of sizzling magnetism that happens when you’re with that one person who turns your whole world inside out.

Speaking of which, that’s exactly the kind of attraction I think that Yeo-reum and Tae-ha still feel towards each other, though Yeo-reum tries to deny it. They may not get along a lot of the time, but there’s no denying that their chemistry is off the charts. Even while she tells herself that she’s not interested in Tae-ha at all anymore, Yeo-reum can’t help but be swayed by him when he does that thing where he leans in close and uses those gorgeous eyes as deadly seductive weapons. And he knows it too, the bastard, and has no qualms using her attraction to him to get what he wants – namely, her. Thank goodness that he wants her for the right reasons (because he thinks she’s wonderful), otherwise I’d worry.

It’s an interesting conundrum that Yeo-reum has to sort out. She can choose Ha-jin and live a happy, comfortable life with a man with whom she’s very compatible, but which will most likely mutate into companionable cohabitation. Or she can choose Tae-ha and live a life of bickering, frustration, and emotional battlefields, but also experience a once-in-a-lifetime passionate love story. I don’t envy the choice, but I think I know what choice I would make.

When he delivered that line about remembering how her lips felt, I had to put the show on pause, look for my fan, fan myself vigorously, and take some very deep breaths. Holy smouldering intensity!

Hit the post button too soon!

The flashbacks showed that Tae Ha can be a real jerk. That bouncing on the bridge while Yeo Reum cowered in fear? Childish and unkind. I guess we'll see if he really learned anything from their relationship and the aftermath, or if he's going to be just the same as before.

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

I wonder how I would've felt about Tae-ha if it wasn't Eric who plays this character. Yeo-reum and Tae-ha did seem so sweet at the beginning of their relationship, and he made it very explicit that he missed her and loved her and everything. But why waiting for so long? I just don't get it.

possible that either one of them moved and they lost contact sine?

It may not show us eveything but doesn't look like Taeha was in any relationship since?

I have to say…Tae Ha is THE master of manipulation. Not necessarily in the negative connotation that it has, but he certainly knows how to get Yeo Reum.

Right? I really like her. In fact, I prefer her to Yeo Reum.
I really like Joon ho too. Wonder when he will get a break and be a first lead in a drama. Watching Heartless city now and loving the bromance btw his character Herr and the main lead

Totally. I know she's not an actress in the traditional sense (more of a comic I guess), but whatever she's in, it seems like she steals her scenes. I love watching her. I'm not sure I'd like her outside of carefully chosen roles, but other than that caveat, I want to say she's my favorite young actress.

(Part of that is that I'm not all that fond of any young actresses. Where are the young versions of Kim Mi Kyung and Lee Il Hwa?)

Are you watching Surplus Princess? Totally killing it. She's going to force me to start watching dramas earlier in the evening, because her characters are starting to merge in my head. :)

YES. I couldn't agree more, she's got a quirky beauty that is more about her personality/persona, it's quite unique.

(shipping Sol/Joon-ho hard now, this would be exactly the friends-turned-lovers pairing I want from this drama)

I would choose Ha Jin. I can't stand alpha males that think they can manipulate others, even if it is for love. That may be why I have not committed to this show yet. Can't stand Tae Ha.

I don't know what's wrong with that. Aren't we always complain woman being passive and easy to manipulate? Now we show one character that a woman moved on and grow and learn something new to bring the relationship forward ( even though it aren't that honest). She will learn her way through the pain and discovery. Isn't that what this drama about. How to be honest and have a healthy relationship. I have married for 6 years and two kids and have a great life and yes, sometimes its between two of that.

I don't know, but in my opinion, Tae Ha's doesn't manipulate her at all. He knows her very well (maybe because of their long relationship) that's why he can handle her better than Ha Jin. Even when the first time they met in the hotel and he knows Yeoreum in relationship through the paper, he didn't react surprised or something like that. But look how childish Yeoreum shouting to Tae Ha in that hotel even pour water on him, and he still didn't do anything. And Ha Jin as boyfriend also strange, he just saying apologize without any regeretful in his face and just in hurry to chase Yeoreum. After giving bunny to Tae Ha, she said she hope they won't meet again in the future, but she back to Tae Ha's home for the reason to confirm they slept or not. He offered Yeoreum a work, I'm sure because he saw a message about debt when their phone was exchanged. So, if we call it manipulation, I could say, he manipulate her to give her a better situation without her knowing.

Honestly, I like Tae Ha's character in DoR. He seems complicated person but actually really sincere, which make people easy to misunderstand.

so Ahrim is really is Hajin's sister. When I watched on Dramafever, the sub say it's Han Jin Soo instead of Ahn Jin Soo.

This really confused me since the character's relationship chart by KBS says she falls in love with Hajin..... Is it because she doesn't recognize she's her brother? and if so, why Hajin doesn't tell her right out that he's her bro?

So the triangle still go back to Taeha-Yeoreum-Hajin... gosh there went my happy ending for every one.

Just 3 episodes in and I smell OPT war already? LOL That's what happens when you start asking people to pick sides. chillax ppl, it's just a drama.

How is TaeHa a "jerk" already? Because he can "manipulate" (or "cleverly influence" for a better word?)? So far I don't see him crossing any moral border to get his way.

As for Taeha pricking at Yeoreum's pride by saying she has a BF and has no interest with him, so she shouldn't turn down a business offer just because they were the ex-es. Sound reasonable to me putting it that way..... And you see, because of her pride, Yeoreum turned down Hajin's proposal because she is short of money, (if not broke). Mean while Hajin is clueless that she's in financial hardship. Mom advised Yeoreum to confess to Hajin about being broke and just go sign the paper, no need to have a wedding. There, mom pricked on Yeoreum's pride too but obviously not working.

After all, Taeha knows Yeoreum too well. :)

Agree hipployta, I know in dramas it's more fun (and HOTTER!) to be with someone who you have sizzling chemistry with…but in real life, I'd rather have a companionable cohabitation. After all, home is something I'd always picture as serene and comforting rather than loud and exciting.

I have such mixed feelings when I see this show. I know the whole "hiding past" is the plot device that will propel the story forward (and bring the leads together), but now its getting bad with them working together. I feel bad for Ha-Jin (despite his questionable decision about not telling Yeo Reum about the blind dates), he is the fool in the group. Everyone is deceiving him and I don't think he deserves that.

"It’s good to know that Ha-jin’s search for a girl with a scar is about his sister and not some long-lost first love. I want him to be a stand-up guy"

Is it sure for sure she's his sister? or because you root for Ha Jin to be that way? I don't remember seeing that in this episode. Will have to rewatch. This throw everything off

It's the hate Tae Ha episode that seems to set up for. I don't see him as jerk. Sure he knows how to manipulate people to get what he want and that is ok since I don't see him stepping over anyone to get his way. Can't fault him for reading people well to his advantage. There is that tender, non manipulative he has toward Yeo Rum that people seem to forget.

It's so easy to root for a good guy but I still think Yeo Rum is true herself most (bickering and all) when she's with Tae Ha as well as that sizzling chemistry when they're together. At the end of the day, go with whoever makes your heart tells you. Yeo Rum is a lucky gal for having two good guys (yes, BOTH) going after her.

It's Eric!~ I miss seeing him in a drama~~
I've seen him in real life and he looks even better and more sizzling in real life, so it's not surprising that he can be so charming on screen too~~

Ha! It's the first time I see a kdrama mother with such a rational attitude towards marrying: to admit your real situation (instead of getting into debt to show off) and just get married legally, without the expensive but unnecessary wedding reception. As in traditions are nice, but only when you can afford. Moms like that need to be treasured.

I'm not sure if i agree that TH is doing what he's doing because he wants YR back. I think that, knowing her, he poked at her pride by basically saying that she shouldn't have a problem working with him since of course she's over him and is in a happy relationship with somebody else...saying that she shouldn't let her feelings for him interfere with her business....he wanted her to work with him and thought that her pride wouldn't let her back down if he put it like that, not that he's trying to get her to come to him in a romantic way. I believe what he says in those interview segments - that he doesn't intend on getting back together with her. He has definitely missed her and is curious about her and her relationship with HJ and wants to be involved in her life in some way...and like he said 10 years ago, "he does what he wants".

Also, i don't agree that "When they broke up, they hadn’t really changed how they related to each other, it’s just that for some reason Yeo-reum began taking his teasing as a sign that Tae-ha wasn’t interested anymore." We would need to see some of what happened during the last 2 years of their relationship to be sure, but based on that last train ride and their break up scene, TH really had changed. There was none of that teasing that we saw at the beginning of their relationship, and like YR said, his seemed disinterested and distant. Though i doubt he actually was, he probably just got too comfortable in his relationship with her (and he was probably drained from all of the work he had been doing at his father's company) and was fine with them just sitting in silence and doing their own thing on the train ride, when YR was just looking for something from him that showed that he still cared about her. They just didn't seem to have the communication that they needed to have.

i thought that the way he was being in the train was probably in part to his job at his dad's company... he was probably really just really tired... and so tired that he ended up taking for granted that she would understand without him having to discuss with her.

i don't like how it ended up like that, either. i also feel like she should have told him about her frustration earlier... at the same time, i don't completely fault her for considering breaking up because of that (been there...), but he should have kept the communication lines open if he really wanted to keep her and tell her that "it's not that..." (as he says).

Yes, I thought it was clear that they weren't spending any time together due to his work and she felt ignored, hence the breakup.

I wonder what the "interviews" are really about. Are they imaginary? Who would be interviewing them about their relationship? I did see a cameraman filming Eric as he left her studio, was that an editing error? It would be funny if Ha Jin hired someone to pretend-interview them to learn about their past.

I don't get Korean dramas with their obsession of girls going back to their old boyfriends after it did not work the first time..... For once I want a drama that the girl gets over her past and looks towards her future with her new good guy..... Exs are Exs for a reason burn that bridge..... Then again is an Asian thing with their obsession with first loves......

the dilemna of having two male leads i like!! both so different, but i do like them both. i feel like both guys have loving gazes that could melt their target.

some notes:
- i get that tae ha would be suspicious of her after she asked for money, but i was really frustrated by how he strung her along. i probably have swooned if he revealed earlier that he wanted to spend more time with her. (it's obvious to us as drama viewers, but not when it's happening to you.)
- prickling her pride to get her back... was that the same thing he was doing when she was begging for forgiveness after she asked to break it off? at some point, a girl gets tired of the tears and the begging. that was a LONG time that she had spent crying at his door and on the phone. if he had wanted her back, he should have answered a call... or gone after her. even the day or the week after she stopped calling wouldn't be as late as it is now. he says he didn't know why they broke up? he should at least know why they stayed broken up.
- it IS funny that viewers are expected to root for tae ha, with his actions.. but that is because he's the main lead. had he been the second lead, people would expect him to let go, and be happy for her if he truly loved her. but, then again, that wouldn't be this drama. :) btw, tae ha is just as manipulative as yeo reum when it comes to relationships.
- i'm worried about the ah rim story line. i wish he would tell yeo reum about it since it seems to be an innocent search... but i guess he's not the only one holding back information. i'm a little surprised joon ho hasn't spilled the beans to the girls yet.
- i'm probably being dense.. i think that ah rim probably isn't his real sister, but... was he in the same orphanage? (was he adopted by his current mom? or did his current mom just drop him there temporarily and pick him back up?) or was he a neighborhood kid who happened to be really close to one of the kids from the orphanage (ah rim)? did i completely miss something? (cuz that is entirely possible).
- we know how ha jin's mom feels about yeo reum. i wonder what tae ha's parents thought....

btw, if i was in yeo reum's place and at this point in time, i would still choose ha jin. i do like that he grudgingly lets her win, but doesn't shy away from the argument or the discussion before he does so. (my hubby just gives up from the beginning with a "you're right..." even though i tell him i want to hear his thoughts... i'm not that mean! XD; ) also, ha jin is a better kisser... from what we see on screen. hahaha.

I feel to defense Taeha here.

There is no expectation as a viewers to root for Taeha just because he's the "main lead". Actually, with the typical 'good' guy vs 'bad' guy set up, most people would tend to root for the 'GOOD GUY' (obviously in the comment section here). So yeah whatever reason people root for, it's not always because "he-is-the-main-lead".

As for why he didn't call her back, in the fash-back at the construction site, Taeha looked touch seeing Yeoreum's messages on his phone and right there, he got called in by the director and got scolded really bad for 'slacking' on the job instead of working hard to earn his way in the company and not just being "the president's son".

It's not necessarily a pride issue when Taeha didn't get get Yeorum back back then. The man is strained & stressed from work to bother for anything else. Just as right after Taeha got scolded by the director, Yeoreum's calling timing came in and he end up throwing the phone on the floor in frustration. Pressure from work + pressure from Yeoreum, one has to give.....

As for the scene Yeoreum standing outside kicking on Taeha's door, how long she was there we don't know AND TAEHA DIDN'T SEE/KNOW THAT EITHER.

Taeha prickling Yeoreum pride, isn't just to get her back. He knows she's in financial hardship (the girl couldn't pay rent) so this steady job will benefit her financially. Yes, he knows how to prick her pride to accept the job but we don't see he want to do that to get back with her romantically. He may be curious about her life now but to get her work with his company at this point isn't to win her back.

When Yeoreum was drunk, he could had turned off Hajin's call but he didn't. He's not that bad of a guy (as what they showed us so far).

I'm not boarding this "Tae Ha is a jerk" train. He makes me scream you meanie at few point in this episode but all in all 3 episode in I don't see a 'jerk' Tae Ha as people putting it out there.

A confident & good with playing mind games (especially with Yeoreum) doesn't equate "jerk" to me.

I'm still team TH-YR since I feel they're much cuter & funnier. And very time they're on screen, I can feel my screen just about to explode. I don't feel that with YR-HJ, actually it's little boring with this line. Really hope Ah Rim is not Ha Jin sister since the way Ha Jin cares for her, I like that and I can feel the drama is setting up for a love line between HJ & AR.

just as a response..

- i don't consider this a good guy vs bad guy set up. i don't think tae ha is a bad guy. i think they're both good guys, just very different personalities. i noted that i think the audience is expected to somehow root for the main lead because the premise of the story is about two people getting back together. whether they are together in the end is not necessarily set.
- the time when he didn't pick up the phone because he got a scolding wasn't his only chance for calling her back. he's not working 24/7. she called him every day at all times, he didn't pick up... and he didn't call back. we also know that wasn't the first time that she had called.
- as for tae ha not knowing or seeing that she was crying outside the door... i feel like that's relevant on his defense... but doesn't diminish how tired yeo reum probably was after all that. if i spent days crying over how i think somebody hated me (not the case in this story, but just as an example), whether it's true or not and without ever getting confirmation despite my attempts, i would also get tired and walk away as well. you expend a lot of energy in negative feelings, unfounded or not. even if he didn't know she was crying outside her door, he knows she was crying and begging by phone - he should know that she would eventually get tired. his phone was broken? he could have gotten his phone fixed or gotten a new phone hooked to his number and called her back. he knew where she lived. he could have gone after her to tell her that he did want her back. it really wasn't too late, until it was too late.... and five years passed.

in any case, i'm still torn over which guy to go with for the story.. for myself, in real life, it would be ha jin.. maybe in the story, it would be tae ha.

oh and let's just wait for Taeha's real kiss with Yeoreum for a fairer "comparison" ^^

These 3 actors & actresses are good kissers, I'm prepared my screen to be on fire when that happens.

Even though Taeha & Yeoreum haven't had a real kiss yet, all of their scene are already sizzling. I don't doubt Taeha's kiss, it's just how much of the hot kiss KBS dares to broadcast! ^^

Such a cute series! Main points:

- Eric Mun is really killin' it with his character. He's able to convey his feelings without even speaking - it's pretty powerful and realistic.

- The directing and production so far has been well done. Music is carefully selected, and scenes are edited quite well. The scenes at Yeonhado were gorgeous!

Thanks for the recap LollyPip. The episodes are getting better and better (which is definitely a good thing.) Like you, I'm glad that Discovery of Romance [aka Discovery of Love] is not holding back when it comes to giving us as viewers answers.

Favorite Moments in Episode 3:
* Flashback to their time together on Yeonhwa Island.
* Han Yeo-Reum holding on for dear life on the bridge and Kang Tae-Ha teasing her by jumping up and down to make the bridge shake.
* Yoon Hyun-Min and Kim Seul-Gi are a hoot to watch. As Do Joon-Ho and Yoon Sol they are cracking me up.
* Watching Yeo-reum’s mother talking back to the tv characters on screen and calling them stupid then come to find out she was the one totally responsible for creating the characters & writing the lines - was golden.

I like Yeo Reum. I don't think she's wishy-washy and can relate to her wanting to be all good financially before heading into marriage. I do feel like she's picked up some of her manipulativeness from Tae Ha, though. This seems to be what she thinks a relationship w/ communication is. Just having the person chase you like she did Tae Ha. I don't see her as annoying but as a person who has a lot to learn--she's interesting. It makes me more curious to see where and how exactly that relationship went wrong, too. But, they've both still seemed to have matured a lot.

I like both Ha Jin and Tae Ha, too. Ha Jin is like flawlessly boring, lmao and Tae Ha is more exciting--like you never really know what will happen with him. So, they have opposite charms. Realistically, I'd pick someone with a bit of both.

I love this drama, it's all kinds of awesome right now. From Yeo-reum's past and present relationships, to her housemates (I call it, he's in love with her), I was actually laughing way too hard at Kim Seul-gi's parts.

btw LollyPip, I don't think Ha-jin is Ah-rim's actual brother, she could just be calling him oppa because he's a boy who's older than her. The kid part doesn't make it sound like they're related, either, just that he's a childhood oppa who took care of her like a baby sister.

From all of the characters, the one that I give my symphaty is Kang Tae Ha. He looks perfect outside but lonely inside. Maybe because of the pressure of work and CEO of his dad's company. He doesn't has anyone to share with. In the past, instead of giving support, Yeo Reum demands the attention. He only has one buddy who seems understand him, but still they just connect to their work. When his work and position already setlled, I can understand why he wants to get back to Yeo Reum, the one that he knows well can make him happy with her cuteness. Of course somehow it sounds selfish. When Yeoreum gave the bunny to him, I guess she wants Tae Ha learn how to take care something precious. Look how Tae Ha still can't express his feeling to YeoReum even now (which exactly shows in every episode that he still in love with her).

I don't think Yeo Reum is a bad girl as well. The way she try to hide her relationship with Tae Ha in past shows two possibilities. First, she doesn't want to make Ha Jin concern or worry about this. The second reason, she still has feeling for Tae Ha and indirectly want to be with him too.

I got feeling when these two characters start to let their pride and honest each other, that time the plot twist from overload dorky and silliness becoming sadness story. What I can see after watching this 3 episode is they both still in love but their pride can't not make it.

I don't know, but I prefer to see more Do Joon- Sol relationship rather than Ha Jin-Ah Rim story. Ha Jin- Ah Rim story quite boring to follow....

In addition, If I have to make a choice, I prefer to spend my life time with someone that knows bad and better side of me, the one that makes me feel free to show the real me and control or handle me indirectly rather than someone that makes me pretend to be happy. So, till this episode I'm on Tae Ha's team.

I love Ha Jin he really seems like a prince charming and even if heroine wouldn't choose him I wouldn't feel sorry for him because YR doesn't deserve a guy like him.
On the other hand I hope that Ah Rim isn't really his sister, maybe that way they would end up being together
P.S sorry for my bad english

Nam Ha Jin is boring? hahaha… 100% I prefer Kang Tae Ha over Nam Ha Jin too. The reason not because Nam Ha Jin is boring, but because Tae Ha is just so beautiful and sexy to look at. Just imagine every day I can see the sexy bed room eyes….XD...Agree with you about Yeoreum. I also prefer Tae Ha has another love interest and the reason is simple, because Yeoreum is in relationship so better he find another sexy lady.

Don't know, I found the actor playing Nam Ha Jin (Sung Joon) is lack of expression. I felt so distracted whenever he started to act angry, because he seems try too hard to look cool. And his speaking is too fast with flat intonation. I like the one who plays Do Joon Ho (Yoon Hyun Min???). Eventhough his speaking also quite fast, I can feel and see the dynamic, expression and his fluctuate intonation.

people finds Eric sexy, whereas i don't think he's sexy or even remotely nice to look at. Knowing a lot of his fans watching this, and he's the main lead, so it's not surprising that he would win the girl at the end. I watch this show for SJ, like him in INR3, and giving the new guy a chance.

TH and YR scenes/past love segment was a bit 'old'. exciting? it has been reused so many time in kdrama, that it's kinda predictable. and the humour in this drama is really trying hard, especially when it's between YR and TH. the only character that make thing funny is sol.

After ep 4, it's really heading the predictable way of trying to make HJ look bad to split up the couple to even the playground.

A lot comments that there is chemistry between TH and YR, however, i don't really feel it (the intensity of that 'kiss' memory... nada). maybe again it's the whole trying hard thing. HJ and YR feels so much more natural and at easy, which that's what how normal couple feel like. If you hang out with couples who genuinely love each other, it will be that sort of feeling. boring? maybe, but that's life. And i guess this is where this drama is unreal, and kinda on the verge of 'drop it' for me, unlike INR3 where i marathon it in 1d after accidentally watched the first episode.

and the whole past love, and how she acted all crazy because of this first love feeling in the past segment, just felt unreal, and unnatural. I remember reading somewhere that the writer for INR3 is the writer for this one, and wanted to portrait real romance. Well, get back with your ex isn't real romance, especially when it's like after so many years of dating and so many years of separation and its chance is pretty rare. I've got friends who are first love, happily married for at least 3 yrs now. And friends who divorced, and remarried, etc. but i got zero friends, relative who did this sort of 'getting back with your ex' thing. And let me tell you my bf who broke up with his gf of 8yrs definitely do not ever want to get back with her, and try to be as far away from her as possible, and to have nothing to do whatsoever with her.

So the whole premises of this drama is unbelievable, the whole thing is kinda cringy :S it's not one of the drama i would go 'must watch as soon as the episode is out' or marathon for. and i know we all have different preferences with which actors we like. However, i feel this drama is more of a fan service to eric and the female lead drama than a serious sequel to INR. Because i haven't seen any romantic thing that TH is doing for YR. misunderstand and act hot headed, and assuming your love enemy the bad guy is not that romantic, it just feels childish :S

Calm down, dear…It's just a drama after all….XD… I like both actors, Eric and Sung Joon. For the older guy like him, yes I find him special. I can understand why many said Eric is sexy. It's kind of balnace between his appearance and his personal. I saw some of clips when he was young. I can say, Eric is manly, quite, unique and never try hard to get girls's attention. Maybe this is part of his charm. On the other hand, I find Sung Joon is cute, sweet and gentle. I like him in INR3 and in this series. The thing is Eric steal can make ladies on his side even though his character is a jerk or bad guy. And I still didn't find Sung Joon doing the same thing. So, I hope after this, he'll try another challenging drama which totally opposite role with what he's done before. Sorry, if my response is really long.

I'm with you on this one. I think Eric looks like a neanderthal. Just one guy's opinion about another guy so my vote doesn't really count. lol

YR deserves to be with TH just for the sole reason that HJ is too good for her. I am actually rooting for HJ and the long lost sister (who I think is not his real sister so it's all good). She seems to be a nice person and very cute.

It is what it is but it always ticks me off that most Kdramas reinforce the notion that nice guys are no good and damaged guys are the ticket to happiness.

Neanderthal? Wow..it so rude… You may not like Eric, or fangirl over Sung Joon, but saying that thing is kind of childish.

If you don't like Eric, no need for bashing him. If many said Eric is sexy, good looking or other compliments, that is their right, so same goes to you for saying him in contrast look than many people's opinion. But I just find it…a bit rude…sorry I just think fans get the emotions too deeply in this drama, which start for bashing the actor too. I like Eric, as a person or as an actor. I don't have any intention for rejecting to your opinion about him though… just feeling I need to defend this actor.

About TH deserve Yeoreum, I disagree. TH deserves better girl than Yeoreum.

I'm with Wawa on the fact that your comment on Eric's appearance was rude. I mean he may not be sort of guy but still you don't have the bash his appearance. To each his or her own. To me he's adorable, he could use a better hair cut but the dude is handsome nonetheless. And I'm not berating you myself for having your own opinion but I just think there was a nicer way to say it that that.

Also, I don't think it's Yeo-reum maybe more of the problem with both relationships not whether she or they deserve each other because it seems like both think they deserve her and if one think that the person there with or could be with is who they deserve how can you fault them. But I do really get what your saying about the "lead" and "second lead". For once I would actually like for the have the second guy aka the nice guy bka her second choice to differ from his path as the Knight-in-the-Shinning who has to bow out or being left for behind or just the loser. I really would throw me through a loop if at the end YR choose HJ over TH and that YR and TH resolved their past relationship and ended things on a since note with a pretty bow on it. ;)

Oh, the frustration of having to choose between to old love and new love, the compassionate mate and the passionate mate, the suitable vs the dysfunctional relationship. Yeo-reum has quite the journey ahead of herself, one which I can't wait to see because while I'm sure of whole she'll end up with in the end I'm not totally sure I would want her to be with him at all or that she would be. This drama is great with marking the differences between their relationships and I'm flash are more than helpful when pulling on are heart strings and actually telling us want happened in the pass for their current situation and lives to be in the state that they are currently in. So happy that with every two episodes to far they questions and statements put forward are stated and answer either in state episode or the next one.

Also, I love the subplots in this drama especially Sol's. I think that along with Yeo-reum her outlook on life and how she handles a situation with relationships whether their romantic or friend she'll handle it different because she'll evolve as a person. IE. The fact that she's decided she wants a boob-job which I don't think she'll go through because she'll look at herself differently by the time it's actually take about it with Ha-jin or for the surgery. Also, I love the fact that Mummy was bold enough to talk to her and her friends about sex and contraception without warning them off of marriage before sex, berating them about it, chastising or outright beating the crap out of her (as we've seen in other dramas). DoR for me taking a lot of bold moves in the normalisation of sex talk and public displays of affection on drama. Which is always a thumbs of in my book. In addition does anyone else think that Momma and Bum-director/camera guy (can't remember this name) are going to end up together or she'll help him over come this depression/insomnia that's been plaguing him since his wife died.

Does anyone else love when they see locations that they've seen in other dramas. I think this is the third time I've seen the bar 'One in a Blue Mo' on a drama this summer.
