Discovery of Romance: Episode 2
by dramallama
Another quality rom-com headed your way! I’m happy to say that we’ve got some crackling chemistry and some fun-filled times to keep us company. Discovery of Romance takes a fresh spin on the “exes meet again” storyline and has some great potential with its formatting, which definitely stood out in this episode. I’m already in love with the characters and the story, which is a good sign this early on. I am sure this show will bring some lovely, romantic, and hilarious goods.
EPISODE 2: “Will you break up with him and come back to me?”
We start off with a devastated Yeo-reum, who’s failed at every single attempt to lie to her boyfriend Ha-jin about where she was last night. She eventually gives up and tells him that she’ll explain everything afterwards. She hangs up and looks back at the bed where she slept, next to her ex-boyfriend Tae-ha. They make eye contact, and she wonders what the heck happened to them last night.
Back in her clothes, Yeo-rum asks Tae-ha what happened. How did they end up sleeping in the same bed? Casually making coffee, Tae-ha asks if she doesn’t remember anything. “You seemed to be having a good time. It’s a shame you don’t remember. I liked it… last night.” She reacts to his vagueness with a worried look.
Over at Yeo-reum’s house, Mom calls the three friends into the house and heads in. Outside, Sol blames Ha-jin for going out on the blind date, as Yeo-reum is sure to have drowned her sorrows drinking the night away and passed out somewhere. She even did that last year during her dad’s memorial day. Sol angrily walks into the house, and Joon-ho follows, lamenting that today will be Ha-jin’s memorial day.
Yeo-reum tries to clarify if they actually slept together last night, but Tae-ha doesn’t help. He seems amused and tells her that since she has a boyfriend, it’s better for her to not remember and just believe that nothing happened. Yeo-reum’s convinced that he’s bluffing and nothing actually happened. Tae-ha smiles at how she’s getting so worked up about this and tells her that it’s going to be hard to send her back to her boyfriend.
Yeo-reum points out that he had ways to get her home last night, but Tae-ha gives her an unexpected reply. “I didn’t want to send you home. I wanted to stay with you for a day. Because once in a while, I thought of you.”
The tense moment of silence is broken by Tae-ha’s offer to make her breakfast since it’s her birthday. Yeo-reum snaps out of it and tells him that it’s indeed her birthday, so she wants to spend it with people she likes. Hoping that she never sees him again, she walks out.
Looking back at Tae-ha’s house, Yeo-reum narrates her feelings. “This is the worst. I don’t know what to do because I don’t remember everything. How could I spend the night at Kang Tae-ha’s house? And lie to my boyfriend…” Speaking of, Ha-jin stares at his phone, contemplating whether or not to use the GPS tracker on Yeo-reum.
Yeo-reum takes a taxi home and asks the driver where they are. She finds out they’re in Seongbuk-dong, and so does Ha-jin, who’s looked up her location. He stares at his phone, unable to understand why she would have gone there. In his office, he looks at his proposal ring and texts Yeo-reum to make sure she made it home and to wish her a happy birthday.
Sol and Joon-ho go through the birthday cake rituals, and as soon as Yeo-reum blows out the candles, Joon-ho cuts to the chase and asks her where she was last night. He suspects that she was with Tae-ha, and Sol doubts it. But Yeo-reum confirms this, saying she wants to die. She tries to explain the situation, but Sol asks the question of the hour: “Did you sleep with him? Did you do it?”
Joon-ho cuts her off and tries to figure out what exactly went down, but Yeo-reum can’t explain. Her friends give her a well-deserved tsk tsk and decide that they cannot tell Ha-jin about this, or at most, insist that they did not sleep together.
At work, Ha-jin and Joon-ho attend to a new plastic surgery patient, discussing which parts of the face they’ll take care of. They give her a mouth wrinkle operation as service, since she’s a celebrity (cameo by comedian Jung Joo-ri). When we see her face, it’s covered in pen marks, and she insists that she’ll no longer be a comedian; she will be an actress. Haha.
In the locker room, Joon-ho comments on how it was a difficult surgery, but Ha-jin is noticeably silent. Catching on, Joon-ho tells him an altered version of what happened with Yeo-reum. Like Sol said, she wandered around a park and passed out. He says that it’s Ha-jin’s fault for going on that blind date, which was a huge shock for Yeo-reum.
Joon-ho tells Yeo-reum his cover story and assures her that he seemed to believe it. But Yeo-reum seems doubtful since he caught her telling all those lies. He probably just pretended to believe the story since he likes her. Yeo-reum sighs, deflated.
Mom is a screenwriter and works on her latest drama in her office, and smiles when she gets a text from Yeo-reum thanking her for giving birth to her. Suddenly, someone enters the house and Mom’s assistant assumes it’s the producer, an unwelcome guest from the look on Mom’s face. Drama producer BAE MIN-SOO walks in, takes off his dirty shoes, and collapses on the couch.
They seem to be old acquaintances, as they address each other informally. Mom complains about his frequent visits, saying that she turns in her drama scripts on time and nothing should cause him to pay them a visit. But Producer Bae has another reason for crashing at their place. He claims he hasn’t slept in four days because the ghost of his wife haunts him with constant nagging around the house. Brush your teeth, shower, clean… HA.
The assistant, JANG GI-EUN (Jung Soo-young), hands the producer a towel, and Mom silently acquiesces. She goes back to work, and the assistant laments about how difficult it must be for her to watch a friend of 20 years go through such hardship after his wife’s death.
But Mom doesn’t seem to care too much and tells her assistant to throw his shoes out the door. They smell and she can’t concentrate. Plugging her nose, she drops the stinky shoes outside the door.
Joon-ho tries to convince Ha-jin to call Yeo-reum, but he ignores the requests. Suddenly, the delivery girl Ah-rim arrives looking for Doctor Do Joon-ho and asks if he remembers her. He guesses wrong the first time (“Did I fix your nose?”) but realizes she’s the fresh juice delivery girl. She’s gotten his order wrong on multiple occasions, and his complaints got her fired.
She grabs his hand and pleads that he take back his complaints. Ha-jin notices the scar on the girl’s arm and approaches her. When he asks where she got the scar, she replies that it’s from her childhood. Realizing that this might be the girl Ha-jin’s been looking for, Joon-ho asks for her name. “My name is Ahn Ah-rim.”
The two boys reconvene in an office. Ha-jin confirms that the scar is for sure the one he’s been looking for, and the name is unique enough for identification. Joon-ho offers to look into the girl’s background, and Ha-jin nods.
At their furniture workshop, Sol asks Yeo-reum if she’s heard anything from Ha-jin yet. She hasn’t and starts to worry, but then they hear a car honking down below. It’s Ha-jin! He asks the girls out for dinner, and Sol appropriately declines to tag along.
At dinner, Ha-jin finally asks the question: “Where did you sleep that night?” He starts over and admits that he tracked her phone. He was worried and also didn’t understand why she had lied to him. He didn’t ask anything on her birthday because he wanted her day to be happy.
Yeo-reum takes a gulp of water and wonders if she should tell him the truth. After a quick moment of contemplation, she blurts out, “I’m sorry.” That catches Ha-jin off guard, and he thinks to himself about the implications of the apology.
Unable to hide the truth, Yeo-reum admits to everything – switching her phone with the hotel guy, meeting to exchange phones, and sleeping at the guy’s place. Ha-jin drops his utensils in shock as Yeo-reum continues to explain that she was drunk. She claims that she didn’t call him because he doesn’t like seeing her drunk, but he says that’s no excuse.
She assures him that nothing happened and asks him to overlook this one time. But Ha-jin is furious and starts to criticize her drunken habits. He says that Yeo-reum becomes flirtatious when she’s drunk. Even when they first met…
Yeo-reum takes offense to this and clarifies what Ha-jin just said. “So you’re saying that I become shameless when I’m drunk? Do you think I do that to every guy? I liked you, so…” Ha-jin tries to clear up the misunderstanding, but Yeo-reum already starts to walk out.
Outside, Ha-jin grabs her and offers to take her home. She declines, saying she has somewhere else to go, and tells him not to contact him for the time being. He apologizes, admitting to his mistake, and gives her his wallet because he knows she only carries around minimal cash. Yeo-reum won’t let him take her home or call her, but he still wants to make sure she gets home safe in a taxi. Aww.
Meanwhile, Tae-ha is taking care of his new bunny. He goes to the vet to get the necessary shots and supplies to take care of his new pet, a female rabbit. He attempts to stuff it in his pocket afterwards, and the small creature actually fits.
Upon returning home, he’s met with an angry Yeo-reum, who demands to check something in his home. He brings in the rabbit cage and food while she tries to retrace her memory. Her film stops after the whole rabbit shower disaster, and she suspiciously asks Tae-ha how her clothes came off.
Tae-ha tells her to just go with the lie, but Yeo-reum wants the truth. She admits that she let down her pride because Ha-jin’s such a great guy, one she intends on keeping. Tae-ha nods in agreement that Yeo-reum had no pride when they were dating as well. She insists that Ha-jin’s a good person and that she loves him. Hearing this, Tae-ha scoffs and comments that love must be easy for her.
Being the gentleman he is, Ha-jin waits for Yeo-reum in front of her home. In an aside, he tells us that he’s waiting for Yeo-reum to come home because he felt wrong about parting ways like that. “I don’t completely understand, but you don’t love by using your head. I’ve decided to believe her because she’s the woman I love.”
Tae-ha argues with Yeo-reum, telling her to just admit the whole story, including their history. She demands to get the true story, and we finally do. After the bunny shower, as Tae-ha looked for a change of clothes, Yeo-reum fell asleep on the bed. Her clothes were dry by the morning because he personally steamed them, but in the present, he lies that they were hung up to dry.
As the story continues, we see that Tae-ha is telling an altered version of what actually happened. He claims that he did try waking her up, but in a flashback we see that he actually tiptoed around to make sure he didn’t disturb her sleep. That still doesn’t explain why they slept together, and though he claims to have moved her to the couch, we see that he actually sat on the bed staring while Yeo-reum slept on his lap.
Now that she’s confirmed that nothing happened, Yeo-reum takes her leave. She reaches out to shake his hand, but Tae-ha leaves her hanging, saying they’re not on a handholding basis. She bids farewell to the bunny and “the world’s most selfish and prickly man.”
In their separate interviews, both Yeo-reum and Tae-ha look dissatisfied. Yeo-reum gives evidence on Tae-ha’s selfishness, saying that he always takes the legs of the dried squid when they’re having drinks even when he knows she likes the legs. Tae-ha argues that it was his way of conceding to her – he left all the good squid body meat for her. Yeo-reum scoffs, saying the he really likes legs, as he even takes all the chicken drumsticks. But again, Tae-ha argues that he actually likes chicken breast and left all the “good stuff” for her.
They both argue that they’ve been patient in putting up with each other. Tae-ha claims that whenever Yeo-reum came over, she would leave a big mess. Yeo-reum says that he should be happy that they’re over now, so he shouts a couple celebratory cheers. Unsatisfied with the response, Yeo-reum walks over into his side of the split-screen and whacks him on the head. Holding his head, Tae-ha cautiously lets out one more cheer while Yeo-reum sits back on her side of the screen looking smug. They’re hilarious.
The next morning, Yeo-reum has her game face on as she brushes her teeth in Joon-ho’s bathroom. She takes off her ring in front of him and leaves it there. As the official messenger/wingman, Joon-ho delivers the ring and wallet to Ha-jin, telling him that Yeo-reum’s starving herself (she cleanly eats a whole bowl of rice) and bawling her eyes out (while she’s applying a face mask).
With some very dark circles under his eyes from playing messenger, Joon-ho glares at Yeo-reum and calls her a fox. She admits to this and orders him to deliver a box of couple memorabilia to Ha-jin. Although he initially refuses and bites his tongue to die, she whips him into place to follow her orders. Ha-jin goes through the box’s contents while wallowing in beers and stares longingly at a picture of their good ol’ days. In return, Ha-jin gives our dark circle messenger some porridge to deliver to poor Yeo-reum.
Yeo-reum thoroughly enjoys the porridge while Joon-ho chides her for putting Ha-jin through all of this. He says he doesn’t date because he’s scared he’ll meet someone like Yeo-reum.
In her interview, Yeo-reum tells us that she became this way because of Tae-ha. “I’ve learned that the girl shouldn’t move when you’re dating. You have to make the guy move. That’s how you get what you want in the game of dating. I didn’t know that in the past.”
Tae-ha looks through a box of pictures and shows us a picture of Yeo-reum when they first met. In a flashback to ten years ago, we see Tae-ha boarding a train. He stops to take a polaroid picture, and Yeo-reum happens to walk right into the shot. She picks up his dropped ticket and sees that their seats are next to each other. She warns him about the loud people sitting with them and tells him to meet her at the dining car.
As Tae-ha walks over to his seat, we see that the two loud arguing people are Sol and Joon-ho. They’re arguing about Sol running away from home because she broke up with her boyfriend. Realizing how uncomfortable his eavesdropping is, Tae-ha leaves to meet up with Yeo-reum, who’s busily sketching furniture designs. He notices and asks if she’s a woodworking major. She’s surprised that he guessed correctly, and they high-five.
A moment of silence ensues, and Yeo-reum gets some good tingly vibes just staring at her new friend. She blurts out, “This must be it… I think I just fell for you.” Embarrassed by her confession, she flails her hands around and covers her face. Amused and flattered, Tae-ha confirms with her, “So you’re saying, it’s like love at first sight?” She nods yes and covers her ears in embarrassment. Cuuute.
Back in the present interview, Tae-ha says that Yeo-reum was bright and pretty then. She’s still pretty now, but she was the prettiest then. He thinks of her when he goes to the train station. Yeo-reum says that something must have been wrong with her eyes then. His face isn’t one to fall for at first sight. And she hates thinking about the train station because that’s also where they broke up.
Flashback to five years ago. The two ride in silence while Tae-ha browses through a book. He also moves his seat to the other side and declines her offer to watch a movie together. Eventually, Tae-ha falls asleep, and Yeo-reum comes to a tearful realization. “At that moment, I felt with my whole body that this man has changed and our relationship has come to an end. I was heartbroken. I needed someone to lean on.”
The withered couple arrives at the platform, and we revisit the breakup scene, this time the full version. Clearly upset and crying, Yeo-reum blames Tae-ha for his ignorance. He doesn’t even ask why she’s depressed lately. Tae-ha, on the other hand, tells her that he’s busy and tired. He just wants to have a good time on this trip.
Yeo-reum says that they should just give up. Then she asks why he’s dating her. Tae-ha’s curious himself, as they spent three years crazy in love and these last two years always fighting. Yeo-reum answers for him, “It’s because you want to sleep with me. You’re too tired to go on dates with me during the day, but you want to sleep with me. It makes me miserable, and it hurts my pride.”
Tae-ha tells her that she’s wrong and tries to embrace her, but Yeo-reum backs away. She hates being alone in this relationship. “Even when we’re together, I feel so lonely. Is this love? You said you loved me, but you make me so miserable. Let’s break up. Since we started here, let’s end it here.” With that, she grabs her backpack and walks away.
After a moment to let that sink in, Tae-ha runs after her. He stops her and asks why they have to break up. She says that they’re breaking up because he doesn’t know the reason and doesn’t care to know why she’s having a hard time. Frustrated, Tae-ha gives his side of the argument, “Everyone has hard times, not just you. And we’ve been dating for five years now. Not every moment can be romantic. At times like this when I’m busy, you should understand…”
But Yeo-reum’s not taking any excuses. She tells him to spend his time doing what he thinks is important. Unable to communicate his feelings, Tae-ha throws his bag down and turns around to yell in frustration. He approaches Yeo-reum with a threat, “You know my personality. If you end things like this, you’ll never see me again.” She knows this. “That’s why I waited and tried to stay by you, but it’s over. We’re done.” She walks off with that final word, and Tae-ha yells at her to just leave.
In the present, Tae-ha tells us that he still doesn’t understand why they broke up. Their romance did cool since they had been dating for five years, but it wasn’t to the point of breaking up.
Yeo-reum says that everything was quite clear when they broke up. He didn’t care for her feelings, and he seemed to only date her because he wanted to sleep with her. She says this nonchalantly, but the latter reason still seems to sting.
Tae-ha needs a moment to take the low blow, and he decides if she’s playing this way, he can’t back out either. He admits that after they broke up, Yeo-reum was the clingy one. She called him nonstop to apologize and even visited his home. Tae-ha checked his messages during his busy schedule at the construction site, and we see that back then his current employee, Director Yoon, was ordering Tae-ha to work. He gets no slack even though he’s inheriting the company from his father someday.
Director Yoon gives him a hard time and tells Tae-ha to learn the trade, not with instructions, but by just doing. Tae-ha gets a call from Yeo-reum, and he throws the phone at the wall, mad at the world for his troubles.
Heading to Ha-jin’s house, Yeo-reum tells us that Tae-ha’s not a great person, but it was also her fault for not knowing how to deal with men. Now an expert, she goes into Ha-jin’s messy home, which shows evidence of his difficult times. She cleans up and waits on Ha-jin to return home.
When he returns, he spots Yeo-reum’s lipstick and looks around for her. He finds her in the closet, and she gives him a curt greeting. They tell each other to apologize first, but Ha-jin eventually loosens up to Yeo-reum’s kisses. He carries her to bed and tells her to level up if she wants to be forgiven. And so sexy times ensue.
The next morning, Yeo-reum brings back her box of memories, having skillfully solved her relationship issues. She puts all the items back in the rightful places while Joon-ho and Sol shake their heads at poor naïve Ha-jin. Joon-ho tells Sol that she has nothing to say in that department either, but Sol confidently says that she’s become cool while dating Eun-gyu.
Sol looks giddy as she waits for her boyfriend. When he arrives, she asks him to go on a trip that weekend and hands him a gift. But when he opens it – leopard-print undies – he looks at her with shock, saying that they’re not in a trip-taking kind of relationship. “You’re my girl friend, meaning a friend who’s a girl. Did you not get that?” Ooof. Friend zoned.
Walking away, she tells us that she’s totally fine and cool. “If one side thought it was dating and the other side didn’t, so be it.” She throws away her gift in the trash, but the next thing we know, she stands in the way of her boyfriend’s car.
When he comes out, she tells him that it doesn’t make sense. They’ve been having coffee, movie, library, drink, and dinner dates for the last two years. She was the first one he called when he got hired, and they’ve always had annual traditions. But all of that goes down the drain with his one argument, “We didn’t sleep together.”
Back home, Sol bawls and cries mascara tears as Joon-ho and Yeo-reum look at her pitifully. Yeo-reum’s got it pretty much figured out – he broke up with her as soon as he got a job. Joon-ho wants to go chase down Eun-gyu, but Yeo-reum stops him. Seeing that he’s overreacting, she asks if he likes Sol. After a quick glance at Sol and back at Yeo-reum, Joon-ho refutes her claim, saying that he’s just mad because they’re going to have to waste money on drinks because Sol goes crazy during breakups.
At that, Sol bursts into more cries. She asks if sleeping together became the deciding factor between friends and lovers. Unfortunately, both Yeo-reum and Joon-ho nod yes.
The taxi driver (cameo by Lee Moon-shik) says that it’s been about five years since sleeping together has been that deciding factor. He drives through a motel area and tells us that kids nowadays spend their time at motels while their parents think they’re studying at the library. He smirks at one couple walking in front of him until he realizes that the girl is his daughter. As expected, they both get a good beating.
Tae-ha sits through a meeting to find a furniture designer to meet their interior design needs and looks bored at all the options. Until they come upon a place called “Summer [Yeo-reum] and Pine.” The name piques his interest, and once he sees Yeo-reum’s face as the owner, he decides that this is the place.
Sol lies down across a table while Yeo-reum makes calculations on their shop’s meager finances. Then Tae-ha walks in with Director Yoon, and the two greet their guests with unwelcome faces. It is then that Director Yoon finds out that Yeo-reum and Tae-ha are exes. Awkward.
They discuss the reason for their visit outside – they want Yeo-rum’s shop to build the furniture for a wine bar. Sol seems excited to get started, but Yeo-reum declines the offer because she doesn’t want to get involved with Tae-ha anymore. Sol drags Director Yoon aside to talk about the contract while Tae-ha and Yeo-reum talk.
She tells him that she’d prefer not to see him because the sight of him triggers horrible memories. Tae-ha says that he can only think of all their good memories. “So what do you want me to do?”
Tae-ha looks at her, “Han Yeo-reum…” Then he pulls her chair close and continues, “If I ask you to break up with that guy and come to me, would you? If you come back to me, I promise I won’t make you cry.” Yeo-reum looks at him incredulously, and Tae-ha responds with a curious smile.
COMMENTS
I love this. It’s only the second episode, but I love it. The story feels full, and I’m so glad that we’ve got great leads with undeniable chemistry. To be honest, I was a bit nervous about this drama because I had looked up a few interviews with the cast. And they were… awkward. I mean, usually press conferences tend to be more formal and awkward, but it was a worrisome awkward. But actors do what they do best, and I was quite relieved to see that Eric and Jung Yumi delivered. The only good thing I got from the interviews was that our leads handled the kiss scenes better. Whatever that means, I hope they make the best of it so that we get the best of them.
The story is endearing, but I think the aspect of the show that makes it compelling is the format. The formatting of this show is a big plus. I assumed the interview format would stop with the teasers, but I was pleasantly surprised that it’s following through the whole show. The asides with the characters admitting their true feelings adds another dimension to our story, and it’s definitely an enhancing factor. At times it’s pretty obvious what they’re feeling, but it’s fresh to see them admit it so openly to us. And it’s not some sort of dramatic irony where we know and they don’t – they’re talking to each other, just through interviews. It’s like they’re arguing indirectly through us through some meta-mechanism put in place in the form of an interview. I love the part when Yeo-reum crosses over to Tae-ha’s interview to give him a well-deserved whack. It’s another layer in the inception-like format of the drama; it’s genius, and I love it.
But back to our story, I’m curious to see how Ha-jin’s arc will turn out. He’s this perfect guy with some great romantic intuition, but he almost seems too perfect. Not that there’s anything wrong with being perfect (I mean, Sung Joon is pretty much perfection), but there’s still a mysterious element to his character. It was nice to see some of his imperfections and struggles come out through his naïve interpretation of love (and Yeo-reum’s skillful manipulation), but I’m still not sure about him. He’s hiding something for sure, and it has everything to do with his long lost but now found girl with the scar. First love? Birth secret? Whatever it is, it’d better shed light on our missing character description and unsettling vibe I’m getting from Ha-jin.
On another note, I love the friends. Housemates/roommates seem to be a reoccurring trend in dramaland, but so far, it’s a wonderful dynamic that I’m not sick of. Kim Seul-gi and Yoon Hyun-min are a great comedic pair, and I love them both because they’re not ones to blend into the background. They serve their purpose by delivering some of the slapstick humor in this drama, but they’re ultimately friends – loyal friends and housemates of Yeo-reum. Although it’s still early, we’ve seen them take her side and come to her defense when she needs it. I’m looking forward to seeing more of their friendship and some potential romance between our two friends. They foreshadowed it, and I’m catching onto the hints.
Seeing the full breakup scene between Yeo-reum and Tae-ha was heartbreaking. The moment itself was heartbreaking enough, but it was more so because we saw what happened before and what resulted from it. They were so cute and so in love, but at some point, they started to drift apart. The romance had plateaued, communication had stopped, and they became selfish. They still both needed each other, someone to lean on, but they both hid their fear of loneliness behind their pride, which they mistakenly thought to be courage to stand on their own. And as a result, Yeo-reum became the mastermind of romance, or so she thinks. Her interactions with Ha-jin are a result of her jaded romantic perspective, and she seems to be more manipulative than skillful. She maintains a certain façade, and although it’s not fake, it’s definitely not all of her.
And that’s something she can’t pull off with Tae-ha. He already knows her too well, as they’ve been with each other through the discovery of their idea of romance. Childish accusations about squid legs and drumsticks may be petty evidence to hate on each other, but that’s what makes them so real. They’re upfront and honest about their complaints, and Yeo-reum in particular doesn’t care about being sly or keeping face. She’s right in his face, super direct about what she wants and what she doesn’t like. She may be a little nastier, but I think her character’s so much freer with Tae-ha around. I’m rooting for these two, and I hope that Tae-ha’s blunt confessions and little gestures will turn Yeo-reum around so they can rediscover their romance together.

Tae Ha-Yeoreum is the same. They both actually naive and childish. While Tae Ha needs Yeoreum for supporting his career, she seemed not understood and contradictory saying he was busy with his own business. On the other part, Tae ha might not understand when we are in relationship, communication is important no matter how busy we are. But I love the interview parts how they got fight just because of silly stuff, proof how immature they are even until 5 years later…LOL... I hope when Yeoreum and Tae Ha work together, they could bring another fresh impression about each other, which build their maturity in relationship and getting back together. I don't know, but seeing two person still deeply in love but can't be together just because their pride and selfishness, make me sad. Just like what happen to Yeoreum and Tae Ha now.
My second pair favorite will be Yeoreum housemates. Both are cute and sweet, and of course another bickering couple too.
Until now, I don't find Ha Jin and his childhood friend is interesting to follow. But we'll see.
Oh..I love this drama. The drama with so much fun to follow, but indirectly give us something to learn about true relationship.

Still not here for him stripping down and getting in bed with her...NOPE
And though Ha Jin is a bit mysterious seeing how Yeoreum handled things makes me think they might need new relationships too. She is straight up lying by withholding information about her past and he does too (matseon which was just friendly but still).

We still didn't get to see everything that happened that night, for instance; if Tae Ha steamed her clothes, why was it all over the room when Yeo Reum woke up? Until everything is shown,I'm gonna refrain my initial harsh judgement.

Her clothes weren't all over the room. In episode one, during the wake-up scene, we saw them very neatly folded (I remember being impressed with how neat they were, in perfect squares) on one of the shelves in the bedroom. It was his clothes that were strewn all about.

not sure if you watch the 1st episode or just read the recaps but her clothes are neatly folded on the stereo table looking over the bed. The blue shirt hanging on the lamp that she grabbed to put on were Taeha's.
What the recaper seem to miss is that Taeha was to tuck a pillow under her head but she then rolled over and placed her head onto his lap. I'm guessing he didn't want to disrupt her and fell asleep on the bed as well

But he was still wearing his shirt when sitting on the bed. And didn't she go to sleep in a robe? At any rate, she was in bed wearing something with straps - I guess her underwear didn't get wet? :)

He was wearing his shirt when sitting on the bed but in the morning it's on top of the lamp next to Yeoreum which she grabbed to wear. I guess Taeha took it off for whatever reason they didn't (haven't) show us
She wore a slip when she was in bed. It probably got wet too but Taeha didn't take it all off to dry? :D
I don't think they really 'slept' that night :D

Im really excited for this show. For some reason, I was a bit unsure of Eric. I haven't seen him in much and I was worried his character was going to fall flat. But I love him. And that scene at the start when he opens his eyes. I admit. I swooned a little. He's damn sexy.
Side note - i went back and watched some I Need Romance 2 today. Jung Yumi says almost an identical line with the "I feel lonely and miserable with you" Haha. Love it.

This episode was supposed to show us that TH is not the kind, loving man who was left by his bipolar girlfriend on a train station. But it had the exact opposite effect on me. The more background we got on the breakup story (and the more we had to feel with her) the more I got annoyed at Jumi's character ... maybe it is my personal dislike of overly whiny people, but right now I feel for TH and think the breakup did them both some good.
That being sad: their initial meeting in the train was übercute :D
And I want to know how it came that they became friends with Sol/the other guy. And I NEED to see that two together, because AWWWWW.
(And they are going to need a bed scene, because that's what defines relationship status, right? kekeke)

I really don't think you're supposed to be picking a side. It's more about connecting with the characters, seeing how far they've come and why they've come that way. So far, it feels like we still don't know too much about the break up or exactly how either felt during those last two years.
For me, it does seem like Tae Ha failed to notice the little things about Yeo Reum. Like the squid legs. He says he's giving her the best parts but...those aren't the parts she likes, lol. His heart is in the right place but he isn't really thinking of her feelings, is he? Likewise, Yeo Reum doesn't exactly seem to make herself too clear and wants to be asked about her feelings (though, this is understandable)/expects people to know things instead of just telling them. I think these are such human habits people can easily slip into in a relationship without even realizing so I feel for both of them and hope that they take the time not only to discover their romance again but an understanding of each other on a deeper level with better communication.

I know JY's character is a quirky, but I can actually understand her. I don't think a person is being whiny when she's going through things but her partner doesn't even bother to ask what's wrong with her when there's obviously something bothering her. Eric's character might've said that she's not the only one who's having a hard time, but everyone handles problems differently. Eric's character might handle them with keeping things to himself and working it quietly alone, but JY's character isn't like that. She says that she needs someone to lean on. She might just need somebody to bounce her frustration to, and I think that's pretty common for women. At least for me and the women I know, we need to talk our problems out while my husband the other hand, keeps things inside.
I think being in a relationship means that you give to your partner what they need, though most often we give to them what we want them to give instead.

Agree. I don't think she's whiny. Wanting your significant other to tune into your feelings is not a sin and a valid complaint if it's not happening. Usually, someone would ask "Are you OK?" or something and it seems like she wasn't getting that, so I get it. She said she felt lonely and you shouldn't feel that way in a relationship. Everyone needs someone to talk to and obviously she wanted to talk to him. But he doesn't seem to be the talking type and also feels she should understand him even when he's not really understanding her. Neither of them are bad or dislikable for these things, however...
Now in her new relationship she's "learned" from her past one. But, to me, all her tactics seem like defense mechanisms to keep the ball firmly in her court and not get hurt again. Kinda sad when you think about it. The reason she must be so mad at Tae Ha still is because she must have been really hurt even if he didn't do anything to hurt her purposefully. At least that's what I think. Who knows, though. They have lots to talk about, lol.

yep, too warly to tell but she seems to 'learn' from her past relationship with Taeha is to be be passive aggressive to get the upper hand on her relationship with Hajin (who is so much of a good guy & naive like Hyun Min character pointed out). That's why her tactics work
Both Taeha & Hajin both have about 5 years in their relationship with Yeoreum but Taeha seems to know her much better (well minus the squid & chicken breast part) XD He can some what 'read' her 10 years later.

I'm puzzled at Sol for thinking she & Eun-gyu were dating.... Did they even kiss let alone the “We didn’t sleep together”. If they didn't even have a kiss and she dares gaving him a leopard undie before the trip, she's either very bold or very blank lol
Yeoreum is the one that wears the pants in her relationship with Hajin (perhaps learning from previous relationship?) while she's more genuine (be it unreasonable, irrational and all) when she's with Taeha.
Yeoreum: “It’s because you want to sleep with me. You’re too tired to go on dates with me during the day, but you want to sleep with me". ~ ain't he has to work during the day? lol working his ass off at construction sites, being bossed around when he's the President's son and barely have enough sleep... I don't know if she sees that. I feel her frustration for feeling not being her boy friend's centre of the universe but talk to him before calling it of. It hurts so much with their breakup scene since their love at first sight was really sweet, especially when she the one that makes the 1st move (You go girl!).
Love the part when TaeHa & Yeoreum dissed each other over chicken and squid...how childish lol Being it was at each of their own home makes this scene gold!
Yoon Hyun Min & Seul Gil always make me laugh when they're on screen together.
Thanks for another great recap!

I am totally looking forward to the Sol-Joon Ho pairing. Those two are so brilliant at comedy, that I find myself looking forward to their dialogues and conversations (more than the lead trio's)in every scene that they are in.
And I find Ha Jin a little boring. If it wasn't for the scar-on-arm storyline and Sung Joon's charisma I would have forwarded all the scenes with only JY and him in it.

I'm enjoying this as quite a light watch.
The actors are all super duper. Love Jung Yumi, Eric, Kim Seul Gi (man, I really do like her), and all the others. seriously, they're all so good, and well cast.
The only thing that gets on my nerves sometimes, and about which nothing can be done about due to the style (?) of the direction, is that there's SO MUCH EXPOSITION.
Like, I can tell or at least make my own judgement on how a character feels from the actors' expressions('cos y'know, the acting is pretty good in this one), or things they do or the stuff they say IN their dialogue, and still the show has the characters give a narration of how they feel.
The interview parts are bearable, more so than the occasional in the moment narration/voiceover that occurs.
But I get it. It's just the writer's style, and overall the show is quite charming, so... Ehh.

This show is not for everybody and it's certainly not for ahjummas that control the remote at home with its modern way of thinking, so i do understand its low ratings. Eric even mentioned that this show isn't your usual KBS fare. This show is geared more towards the late 20-30 somethings and it's the most buzzed about drama on nate out of the other mon/tues offerings even though it has the lowest ratings.
These characters feel so real. Whether you like 'em or not, they're so realistically flawed. The break up scene was perfect. There was no big misunderstanding that stood in the way, rather we've got that common 'lack of communication' that eventually broke the two up over a period of time. The two simply drifted as both were going through a rough time. 5 years is no joke. It was well written and well acted on both sides (i'm equal parts having a major girl crush on jung yu mi while oogling at eric).
Tae Ha is so blatantly honest with his feelings any fool would be able to see he still has lingering feelings for yeo-reum. "I loved you", "I missed you", "I wanted to stay with you","I thought about you", all of which he interjects in untimely fashion to throw off yeo reum (and make us weak in the knees). The flowery words aren't so much as impactful as it is the vulnerability that Tae Ha shows in front of the resentful Yeo-Reum. The fact that she's still so angry with him after all these years tells us there are still alot of unresolved feelings..it's far from being over.

The chair scene was nice. I think one can find several interpretations. For example that he uses chair to get close to her - literally in that scene and more generally when he wants to employ her to make furniture for the bar. One can also notice that it's him who will make the first (strong) move to get them together again.
I may seem like a broken record, but I have a soft spot for skillfully applied cheeky confidence - that's how I see this gesture - the man knows what he wants and he dares take it. He manages however not to seem too arrogant or rude. Bravo to Eric - he played the scene to the t.

I saw peeps on twitter spazzed their head off over the chair scene at the end of the episode and I was like what. Screencap didn't do it justice till I see a gif of the scene popped up and I screamed my head off too.
It really strikes her with that sudden move of his but I think when she snaps out of it, may be a quack on the head again? XD
Eric executes that scene so skillfully, especially when he gazes into her eyes saying those words.... goosebumps! How not to be shaken. I wonder if his Shinhwa members will talk about that scene and tease him when the group make a comeback in January.
I love Taeha is aggressive at the right moments while passive at a certain time like giving into Yeoreum's rabbit keeping request. I'm amused at Taeha's vague answer in teasing way when she asked what happened that night and if they 'slept' together.
When I read the character's description from KBS, his character sounds more jerk than what they had shown us so far... I really hope it stays this way ^^

It's the most talked about drama on Nate for the Monday - Tuesday time slot? It's really a pity with the rating they're getting while they got the #1 spot for both episodes (26% & 29%) on TV-ing.
I read an old article about rating system in Korea http://www.soompi.com/2011/06/21/south-korea-tv-ratings-tns-vs-ac-nielsen Apparently only about 2000 households are tracked for rating. Or 1000 households for TNmS currently according to this article http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/biz/2014/01/373_150041.html
Not too sure if things has changed since that 2011 Soompi post and how accurate it is but 1000-2000 households to track TV rating for a nation of 50mil in population, I'm not too sure how accurate it represents the mass.

Even after ep 2 I'm seeing this as a mishmash of the loved characters from other kdramas (Que Sera Sera, Witch's Romance, I Need Romance 3, Flower Boys Next Door), but that's okay. I'm confident the story will form itself in my mind as it goes forward.
I do have a big problem with Sweet Potato going on blind dates to satisfy his mother. Really? No woman would be okay with that. Why is he so nonchalant about it (although I understand that the dates are meaningless to him). Maybe his attitude toward blind dates owomakes YR bold enough to tell him the truth about the night she spent with TH.
What's the little rabbit's name, I wonder?

The rabbit's name hasn't been mentioned yet. But since it is carried in a pocket I would call it BunnyRoo or DeokkiRoo.
The blind dates keep fascinating me since I started watching kdramas. Are really young people so obedient to go there even if they're in a relationship?
I think however, that if HJ explained the situation to YR, she could get over it better than when she learns it from a third party. We already know his momma, YR too, so if they agreed that he goes there, has a coffe and politely asks the girl to reject him, it wouldn't hurt that much. All the more so that the first meetings seem impersonal, they are like job interviews, when two strangers discuss their education, job and such. Or even have YR sit in the same restaurant/cafe and have and eye on them. It was done like that in A Gentleman's Dignity though - the trick was already used, but the scene was hilarious. The other possibility, the one I would personally prefer, would be to sabotage the date, so that my folks abandon the idea of marrying me off their way for ever. This one has been done too often in dramas and I can see why the writer didn't do that. Actually, HJ did the worst thing by keeping mum about it.

I'm mystified by the appeal of this actress. But I've only seen her play a whiny, childish character .. and here she is doing it again. This may be a "modern" rom-com as someone commented here, and certainly it qualifies in terms of the sexual frankness, but this character couldn't be less of a modern woman. So it's a pretty uneasy mix.

I feel the need to defend this actress and I need romance 2, since it's one of my favourite dramas and she's one of my favourite actresses.
Yeol Mae in I need romance 2 is wishy washy and whiny cos she's been trying to get her childhood lover to marry her. They've been on and off for years and he's withholding information from her.
Although we don't know much about Yeo Reum, but imagine, Tae Ha is her first boyfriend and to her it was the only experience she can derive from dating, that's why she's manipulating Ha Jin because she still has so much to learn, she has no idea.
If you want to watch other things by Yumi that's not whiny and wishy washy, give Queen of the Office a try, or the movie w Gong Yoo - the Crucible.

I liked the second episode even better than the first one. It looks as I am getting a nice late summer romcom and this is exactly what I wanted. The writer has kept the light, qiurky tone with some serious questions in the background that I liked so much about INR and INR2 (the third INR was a stinker in my book ;P). Also the characters have more to them than we get to discover at the first glance and it also makes the drama more exciting.

The last 2 years of their relationship it seems to get into their main phrase of career development, especially Kang Taeha when he had to learn from the ground up before taking over the family business
I can relate to her for feeling left out and 'neglected' and he was probably too exhausted to pay attention or care like the first 3 years of their relationship.
He did tell her to reconsider but she was firm that moment.
I just wish she spoke up earlier and gave it, gave them a chance before calling it off abruptly like that. It shouldn't surprise me I guess since she started off this relationship very sudden as well. Just how highly emotional & irrational driven she is.

I think I'm dropping this drama. YR annoys me to no end, after repeatedly lying, she then is still not straight up. Although I understand why they separated, but I think she hasn't matured at all. Then knowing she's at fault (like really, what were you thinking drunk and meeting your ex?), she tries to do the blame game and have the man grovelling.
I'd rather watch Secret Hotel, honestly.
Plus I can see the direction where it's going, they'll make the current boyfriend somehow like the girl with the scar or something that conveniently allows YR to manipulate and make the relationship end because of HIM.

Maybe I am old fashioned and not following everyone's line of thinking anymore, but I did feel like the characters are very real. Wasn't there a tagline somewhere where everyone here is keeping some secret? What is tH's secret? Anyhow, since this is a drama, there must be more than meets the eye to the reason why YR was depressed and wanted to break up like that. I hope - that it is something more than just they drifted through the hard times. If this was a marriage/divorce drama, then I'd be all over it but since it's not... There really wasn't strings attached. 5 yrs and did they discuss their future? I am waiting to find out more before I drag her through the mad. But safe to say that she is definitely not in a better place for having a healthy relationship. Her current relationship is totally dysfunctional.

The tagline on the individual posters is
What they wan to hide:
Kang Tae Ha (Eric): An ex-girlfriend
Hang Yeo Reum (Yumi): An ex-boyfriend
Nam Ha Jin (Sung Jun): A friend I knew
Ahn Ah Rim (Jin Yi): A bare face
Do Jun Ho (Hyun Min): Bank account
Yoon Sol (Seul Gi): Plastic surgery
Not too sure by "Ex-GF" for Taeha means another one relationship out there or it's Yeoreum. I don't think a former since there's no mention of another cast in characters relationship chart.... Unless they just mention it quickly as the story develops.
Hajin's "a friend I knew" is obviously Ah-Rim.

Hmmm...no one seems to have brought up the fact that Yeo Reum was begging to get back with Tae Ha after the disastrous break up scene. He called her clingy and from the snippets given, he avoided her and refused to take her calls. If he loved her so much and really wanted her so badly as how he now is professing, what happened there?
And they dated for 5 years, Tae ha still doesn't know which part of the squid and chicken she likes? Duh?
There is no taking sides especially at this point where so much still to be revealed. As we all know lack of and mis-communication can really mess a person up.

He told her she knew how he'd be if she insist calling it off.
In the snippets, he was obviously quite stress with work to care any more or probably just stick to his words that he told her when she called it off.
Probably time makes the heart grows fonder and realize how much they miss that person. I'm curious if Taeha has any relationship after Yeoreum.

His frustration at the whole break up (he didn't understand why they were breaking up and when asked didn't understand her reasoning and lack of) and pride (which makes him kind of an a-hole).
She broke up with him seemingly (to him) rashly and out of the blue. He warns (threatens -again a-hole like) to really think things through because he won't take her back should she come begging. Well she comes begging and his prides (stubborn personality, hurt, frustration, and just not understanding the whole break-up) has him not opening the door or calling back even through he clearly should/wants to. I mean his frustration when he goes at his current partner and throws the phone tells me this is a guy who knows what he wants to and should do but won't do because of pride.
Stupid pride and the need to win and have the upper hand and not be the "weak one"(which YR explains she used to give up (TH) but now knows you must keep -HR-) kept him from taking her back. We see he no longer really cares much about his pride when it comes to her (bodily telling her how much his missed, loved/loves, wants her back) while she very much does (seemingly not believing his words, the way she plays HR).

not necessarily pride issue. What I a saw is a very stressed Kang Tae Ha with work and that's he doesn't bother any more. Just like right after he was scolded the constriction director, Yeoreum's call come in and he threw it on the floor in frustration. That moment, I don't see it pride issue, it's more with I'm too stressed and I don't want to deal with more stress.

Exactly my point. Tae Ha chose his pride, his work as both of you mentioned and everything else he felt was important to him instead of her at that crucial moment where he could have turned things around. Yeo Reum seemed to be equally at her wits end at that point and since she's the emotional type and frustrated that he's not getting her and disregarding her feelings and what's important to her, she went off the rail. Her bad on that front.
So for me both have to take equal responsibility. I just want to point out that if he wants her back now, he has to really know what went wrong in the past and so far from the asides, he doesn't. So by saying that he won't make her cry now if she goes back to him are empty words.

work yes but not if it's pride or not is yet to be seen, it was just my guess. From what we've seen so far it looks like a combination of work & stress of work that Taeha didn't call her back.
Instead of "what he did wrong" he's probably more clueless of why they broke up instead.
As for "he won’t make her cry now if she goes back to him are empty words." ~ that yet to be seen :) Though, just 2 episodes in, I expect to see more bickering between Yeoreum & Taeha for a while XD

What I like about this drama.
1. The story line. Simple yet complicated. Witty but I'm sure it's hiding painful stories behind that which gonna be revealed soon.
2. The writer. I adore her/him to bring the real relationship conditions in korean society as it is. No fake at all. What I saw in most korean dramas, where girls-boys pretending to show their cute/ innocent love which rarely happen in real life. And what makes me like the show is, the writer seems let the audiences guess or interpret their opinions before revealing the answers in the next episodes, which can keep viewers attach to the show.
3. The actors. The main leads and secondary leads are strong in acting. I never know Jung Yoo Mi this good. Eric should consider an actor as his permanent job (as I heard he's a singer). He should take serious roles in the movies, so people out there may know that Korea also has this charismatic actor. Yoon Hyun Min, I bet he'll be a great actor later on.
4. The viewers. Reading the comments in here make me think how smart viewers of this drama. Their opinions gather and becoming good discussion.
This is the drama that I could say representative of modern drama. All the contents involved in it, which are writer, actors and audiences indirectly communicate and giving their feed back. Love it...

I love Eric. I just miss him sooooooo much…..He should back to drama every year.. I thought after that messy Spy Myung Wol, he won't back as an actor anymore...I even don't care about storyline. Just seeing his face on my screen could make me happy…..agghhhhh….crazy…crazy…crazy…
But anyway, the story untill 2 episode are great. So much fun. Because I don't wanna get headache by watching conflicted dramas… So, the more silly the better….

Such a fun series that seem so 'real'. The chemistry among the actors, and the fun and quirky directing make this series an enjoyable watch.

Thanks for the recap! I love this series so far. It's been a while since I've seen a drama that i thought was as well cast as this one - only problem is sung joon is (and looks) too young to be portraying a 32 year old.
It's only a matter of time before YR's relationship with HJ starts falling apart...when he finds out that the man at the hotel (who's house she drunkenly slept over at, and who "played along" saying that he loved and still misses her) is actually her ex of 5 years i don't know if he's going to be able to handle all of that with the same level of understanding and trust that he has shown.

Okay, now that I've watched the 2nd episode, I can say that I really do like this drama. I can see why others find Yeorum an annoying character but she's ok for me. I don't know, perhaps it's partly because of my love for the actress. I really like her quirky vibe and I find her refreshing. I'm also really enjoying the scenes with Kim Seul Gi. That girl is HILARIOUS! haha! It's a pity that the ratings aren't so good but I can see that this isn't everyone's cup of tea. I can't picture the older crowd opting to watch this drama over the other offerings. It seems like something 20-30-somethings would watch, like someone mentioned above. But I'm glad that it's frequently talked about on Nate. That should still be good for the show.
I haven't started watching My Secret Hotel yet so I wouldn't know how this measures up next to that. I'll have to check it out to find out. But for this show, for me, so far so good. Can't wait for next week's eps! :)

Also, I forgot to say, the scene in the train where they first met, that was sooo cute! :3 Both Eric and Jung Yumi were really adorable there. I normally find overly cutesy-cutesy actresses annoying but Jung Yumi, I find, is a good, perfectly tolerable kind of cutesy. LOL.

I also love Jung Yoo Mi. For someone in their early 30s, Yoo Mi is absolutely cute, pretty and looks younger than her age. Her chemistry with Eric also undeniable. Secretly I'm hoping this two become couple in real life....For myself, yes her character is annoying but I just love it, especially when she meet Tae Ha, the one who knows her really well and can be dominant over her. That's why they always start quarrel, which I find cute and funny.
My stomach got pain because laugh so hard when they started blame ecah other and bickering over squid and chicken...LOL

This is the first drama in a while that I've actually liked. The first two episodes are fantastic. The actors are fantastic. The writing and directing are fantastic. All around it's fantastic. It doesn't hurt that I just love Eric! I like his character, and I'm firmly rooting for him to get the girl.
Thanks for the recap!

I'm just going to say it, "I love this style of this bloody f**king show." I thought 'Fated to Love You' would be my summer romance hit but this show was quickly killed those feelings. I love the format of the show especially the interview concept of it. But I'm wondering will it actually turn out to be an interviewer or just them mentally dialoguing out loud. Yeo-reum hitting Tae-ha after not agreeing with answer to the interviewers question was hilarious. Even mentally their a match for each other.
Also love that Yeo-reum & Yoon-sol's names together. Summer and Soft-snow/sun, how cute.

Added.
Also love the more progressive and liberal attitude this show has towards displays of affection and sexuality. The cast seem pretty modern (save for poor Yoon-sol) about their live styles and I think that will go a long way with bring in younger viewers who are ready to have an open and honest conversation about sexuality and current culture. Two thumbs up.

This is a great show and I want to see the rest of it asap.
The cast, storyline and delivery of the storyline are perfection so far and I like how the characters are not overly naive and the kisses are romantic. Sung Joon does not disappoint in the kissing department.
I like seeing the elevator couple from Que Sera Sera together again and I'd like to see them end up with each other. I think Sung Joon's character has too many secrets.
Oh, and why did Tae Ha squeeze air boobs when he was talking about chicken breasts? LOL

I don't know if this series is my cup of tea, the first two episodes were rather exhausting, the female lead was emotionally dragging and manipulative. Granted that the emotions are realistic and the chemistry is there, I just don't feel it.
Are they all just wind up to their exes? resolve the issues? cover up the lies? bury the past? move on to another?
:(
Oh well, this is dramaland.

the only thing I don't like in this drama is the way the main girl character , Yeo Reum, can casually have sex with her boyfriends. Just my personal opinion though.

Can somebody please tell the title of the song used in the scene where Yeoreum was cleaning up Ha Jin's house and when she and Sol were checking out the bar construction site?
