Discovery of Romance: Episode 1

So fun! The premiere episode of Discovery of Romance really delivers, in just about every area you want a good rom-com to deliver: great leads with fantastic chemistry, hilarious best friends and witty banter, and no small amount of kissing and skinship (oh, and abs. Lots of abs). If the show keeps going the way it’s started out, we’re in for a rollicking great end-of-summer romance. I’m ready; bring it on!

EPISODE 1: “How did we end up sleeping in the same bed?”

The show opens in the summer of 2004, with a home video of an adorable couple, HAN YEO-REUM (Jung Yumi) and KANG TAE-HA (Eric), as they share an adorably snuggly picnic in the park. They smooch and tease each other, obviously very much in love.

On another day, Yeo-reum reminds Tae-ha that there are only ten days left until their 100-day anniversary. She suggests they stay in a hotel that night, and pouts when he actually has to think about it.

On their anniversary, they hilariously sneak up on the hotel with him in sunglasses and her behind a fan, both of them feeling like the whole world is watching. Yeo-reum coaches Tae-ha on how to book the room, but he chickens out and they leave. They argue in the car over who was more scared, and Tae-ha apologizes for his innocent soul. Cute.

Yeo-reum concedes that she’d be fine even if it wasn’t a hotel, so they head to Tae-ha’s place. In the morning, he makes breakfast while they take some more sweet home videos.

Over the next few years, Yeo-reum and Tae-ha exchange unique wooden couple rings, taking more photos and making a collage of their relationship in his apartment. They couldn’t possibly be any sweeter as a couple.

In the present, Tae-ha is interviewed about their relationship, where he claims that dating Yeo-reum damaged him for good. He’s never liked anyone as much as he liked her, and he still doesn’t know why they broke up. Yeo-reum is also interviewed, and she tells how her attitude towards dating changed because of Tae-ha – she learned to take the upper hand in relationships. She admits she broke things off, and is confused that Tae-ha doesn’t know the reason for their breakup.

We flash back to a day in 2009 as the two of them get off a train, taking a trip to celebrate 5 years together. Tae-ha walks ahead and doesn’t notice that Yeo-reum is lagging behind. She’s upset and crying, and asks if he hasn’t noticed that she’s been acting strange lately.

He has, and says that’s why he agreed to this trip even though he’s been working a lot and is exhausted, but Yeo-reum is upset that he’s never asked why she’s been depressed. Yeo-reum says she wants to break up, because she’s tired of waiting for him and feeling lonely. She takes her bag and leaves him standing on the train platform.

Back in the present, Tae-ha admits he’s curious about her and would like to see her, while Yeo-reum says she never wants to see him again. Tae-ha would even like to be friends, but Yeo-reum laughs that she has friends already, and even has a new boyfriend.

We see the new boyfriend, NAM HA-JIN (Sung Joon), shopping for engagement rings. He tells the salesgirl that his girlfriend’s birthday is soon and he plans to propose.

Yeo-reum tells the interviewer that they met a year ago on a blind date, only it wasn’t her who was being set up with him; it was her friend. We see Yeo-reum and her friend YOON SOL (Kim Seul-gi) sitting in a restaurant with Ha-jin and his college sunbae and coworker DO JOON-HO (Yoon Hyun-min) as Joon-ho makes the introductions. Yeo-reum and Sol design furniture together, and Ha-jin and Joon-ho are both plastic surgeons at the same clinic. He sings Sol’s praises but Ha-jin’s eyes keep skipping over to Yeo-reum, though it doesn’t stop him from looking bemused when Sol declares he’s not her type.

Sol stage-whispers to Yeo-reum that Ha-jin looks like a player, but Yeo-reum thinks he looks good. Joon-ho, determined to hook someone up tonight, shifts gears but Sol says she and Yeo-reum made a pact not to date. She says dating causes all kinds of social problems, but Ha-jin counters that in a good relationship, that wouldn’t happen.

The restaurant owner tells them all to leave now since she’s closing, and Ha-jin suggests they have another beer at the park. They tell Sol and Joon-ho to get the beer, in unison, and high-five each other only to be startled at the jolt of attraction from the sudden skinship.

Yeo-reum and Ha-jin sit in the park making small talk, and he hesitantly asks if she really hates dating. She says she just doesn’t have anyone she’s interested in, which he takes as his cue to scootch closer and ask, “What about me?” He inches even closer and asks what she thinks of him, and in her nervousness she nearly tips backwards over the railing.

Ha-jin grabs Yeo-reum around the waist and they freeze again. He leans even closer and asks if he can kiss her, only to get slapped. Ha, Yeo-reum looks at her hand like it’s an alien with a mind of its own. Ha-jin backs off and Yeo-reum says she was just startled that he asked instead of letting a kiss happen naturally, and tells him to try again without asking. So he does. Thoroughly.

Both of their phones ring and they jump apart to answer. It’s hysterical how they tell Sol and Joon-ho that they’re not sure what part of the park they’re in (“There’s lots of trees!”), just to gain some more alone time. They end the calls and without a word, pick right back up where they left off.

In the present, a call from Ha-jin interrupts Yeo-reum’s interview, and they confirm plans for a date that night. Ha-jin gets caught smooching his phone by Joon-ho, and warns him to keep his upcoming seon (blind date with an eye towards marriage) a secret from Yeo-reum. Oh dude, this is not at all cool. Joon-ho doesn’t tell Yeo-reum, but he does tell Sol, knowing she’ll make sure Yeo-reum hears about it.

Yeo-reum heads to the hotel where Ha-jin’s date is, and hops from table to table hiding her face until she finally sits one table over with her back to him. She writes a note on a coaster and slides it to the man at the table with her, only to realize belatedly that it’s Tae-ha.

They both stare in shock for a moment, then he grabs the note before she can grab it back. It says her boyfriend is sitting at the next table on a blind date behind her back, and asks if she can sit here and listen in. I am so embarrassed for you right now.

Immediately realizing the opportunity that’s fallen into his lap, Tae-ha politely greets Yeo-reum with a twinkle in his eye and comments that the girl her boyfriend is on a date with sure is pretty. Yeo-reum listens in mortification as Ha-jin talks about his job and flirts with his date. Tae-ha’s Ouch, that’s gotta sting smirks are awesome.

Yeo-reum glares at him while thinking that he hasn’t changed and that he’s still a jerk. On his side of the table, Tae-ha watches Yeo-reum react to the date and thinks that she hasn’t changed, and she still doesn’t know how to hide her feelings.

Ha-jin’s flattery gets to be too much and Yeo-reum jumps up and yells, “HEY!” She berates Tae-ha for going on a date behind her back, though it’s clear her words are for Ha-jin. She asks if he wants the daughter of a hospital owner that much, and Ha-jin grimaces as he realizes what’s happening behind him.

Yeo-reum picks up a glass of water and throws it in Tae-ha’s face, saying they should break up. She asks, still talking to Tae-ha but meaning Ha-jin, if he ever loved her. Awww, it tugs at my heart how Tae-ha says seriously that he did love her and has missed her. Talking to him now, Yeo-reum says he should have said that when it mattered, and Tae-ha asks for another chance.

It seems like Ha-jin’s date wasn’t ever a real date, since the girl smiles and wishes him luck when he turns to collect Yeo-reum. She storms out with Ha-jin close behind, and Tae-ha realizes she grabbed his cell phone by accident.

Outside, Ha-jin says his mother wanted him to go on three blind dates for her birthday gift, promising that if he did, she’d never mention it again. He says he only wants Yeo-reum, and she starts to soften but sees Tae-ha watching them from a distance. Ha-jin backhugs and kisses her until she lets him off the hook, and Tae-ha just watches them go, with her phone in his hand.

Ha-jin and Yeo-reum go to the theater, where he promises he only went on the dates to appease his mother and teases her for her jealousy. He asks if she knew that guy at the hotel, since it seemed he knew her from his answers. She denies it, but the reminder that he’d said he loved and missed her seems to shake her up a bit.

Tae-ha takes a broody shower (oh my) and talks to Yeo-reum’s silent phone all evening, willing her to call him. Poor guy, he’s clearly still hung up on her.

Yeo-reum tells her roommates Sol and Joon-ho the whole embarrassing story, and makes them swear not to tell Ha-jin. Why do I think that telling Joon-ho anything is a bad idea? She takes a call from Tae-ha’s employee YOON JUNG-MOK (Lee Seung-joon) but assumes it’s a wrong number, only then realizing she’s got the wrong phone.

It’s so cute how Tae-ha leaps across the room excitedly when Yeo-reum’s phone finally rings, but it’s only Yoon, who’s gotten the number from Yeo-reum. He calls Tae-ha to the hospital where one of their employees is being treated after injuring himself on the job. Tae-ha seems like a firm but understanding boss (he’s the head of a construction company), as he fusses at the man for getting hurt but gruffly instructs him to stay home and take care of himself.

Yeo-reum’s phone rings again, and Tae-ha only betrays a tiny smile as he greets her coolly. He wants to meet to exchange phones, but she’s busy and offers to give anyone her number if they call for him. She hangs up and he gets a text from her mother, threatening to evict her if she doesn’t pay her rent right away. Dang.

Yeo-reum’s actually on her way to visit Ha-jin’s mother right now, bringing gifts to appease the difficult woman. Tae-ha texts her about her mother’s message and a few other collection calls he took, making her cringe in embarrassment. He can’t help but look through her phone and finds a massive number of selcas of Yeo-reum and Ha-jin, and tells her photo that she should spend less time dating and more time paying her debts.

Yeo-reum and Ha-jin’s mother talk about how their strained relationship has been better lately, and Mom asks why Yeo-reum and Ha-jin aren’t talking about getting married. Yeo-reum asks if she’d be against it if they were, but Mom just says she wants her to rush a little more.

A bright young female courier makes a delivery to Ha-jin’s clinic, and we don’t learn her name yet but we know her to be AHN AH-RIM (Yoon Jin-yi). She runs into Ha-jin as he talks on the phone with his mother about Yeo-reum, though they clearly don’t know each other.

Joon-ho shows Ha-jin some pictures of a woman with a scar on her arm, but Ha-jin says it’s the wrong scar. Joon-ho asks why he checks all his female patients for a certain scar, but Ha-jin evades the question, and Joon-ho points out how obvious he is when he lies. Iiiinteresting.

Yeo-reum drinks alone at the same restaurant where she met Ha-jin, swiping half-full bottles of soju off of the other tables. Gross. She complains to the restaurant owner about her debt, telling her that she has to pretend she’s not interested in marrying her boyfriend since she can’t afford to get married. But she’s scared some other girl will snatch him up, since he’s such a good catch.

Tae-ha works late and takes a call from Yeo-reum, and he heads to the restaurant to give her a ride home. She’s too plastered to even lift her head or respond to him, and he mutters with a nostalgic smile that she still has her bad habits of drinking and sleeping outside. Ha-jin calls her phone but when Tae-ha hands it to her, the battery dies.

In voiceover, Tae-ha says that he doesn’t know why that happened in that exact moment, and wonders if her battery hadn’t died then, if their future would have been different. In her own voiceover, Yeo-reum ponders, “How does coincidence become destiny, and where does destiny start?”

Tae-ha tries to tell Yeo-reum that her battery died, only to get told to shut up and his face shoved away. Now that Yeo-reum has roused a bit, he sits with her and tries to wake her up further, but she’s still fading in and out of wakefulness. She finally realizes who’s there and reaches out to gently caress his face, then calls him a jerk and shoves his face again. HA.

Yeo-reum runs into the alley to throw up, and finds a tiny adorable bunny. Tae-ha worries it might have germs, but Yeo-reum shoves it at him and commands him to pet it. His childlike expression when he does is just priceless. She asks if it’s a dream that they met again, but Tae-ha says it’s not a dream because she never appears in his dreams, no matter how badly he missed her and prayed for it. Awww.

Yeo-reum declares it must be a dream because her Tae-ha would never say something like that – he was the kind of guy who always made her wait. He said he liked her, but everything was more important than her. Then she tries to stagger away, whining about how badly she has to pee. LOL.

Tae-ha drives Yeo-reum home as she grips the seatbelt for dear life, bunny in her lap, urging him to hurry because she’s got to go. Tae-ha turns up the music and HAHA, it’s “Flight of the Bumblebee,” which I guess can sound like running water when you think about it. He has way too much fun watching her squirm.

Tae-ha takes Yeo-reum and the bunny to his place and she runs off to the bathroom. On her way out, she finds their old “Life is a Journey” collage on his wall. He’s removed all the photos of them and replaced them with new photos, though Yeo-reum sees that he’s left her drawings there.

Tae-ha says he can’t keep the bunny because he doesn’t like animals, but Yeo-reum says her roommate Sol is allergic. She tells him to just take care of it, and they pass the poor teensy thing back and forth as they bicker. Yeo-reum assures the little bunny that he can stay, because Tae-ha is soft-hearted and he’ll come around. He blusters that he is not keeping that rabbit, but it’s pretty obvious that he’s not being given a vote.

Yeo-reum gives the bunny a bath, but it jumps out of her hands and she drops the shower head, causing it to spray all over the bathroom. Tae-ha battles with the shower head and wins, but only after the three of them are soaking wet. Tae-ha towels off and Yeo-reum asks for one too, so he uses his towel to dry her hair, getting awfully close in the process.

When they realize their proximity, they both freeze. It reminds Tae-ha of a time when they were dating and Yeo-reum had buttoned her shirt wrong, and his attempt to fix it turned more than a little steamy. They stand in the bathroom with their eyes locked on each other, soaking wet and overwhelmed by old feelings.

The next morning, Yeo-reum wakes up wrapped in Ha-jin’s arms, and she smiles and snuggles close. In voiceover she muses that even in her sleep it felt strange. Ha-jin’s touch felt different, but also familiar, and she opens her eyes to see that she’s actually sleeping with Tae-ha. Whoa.

Meanwhile Ha-jin buys flowers and grins at the diamond ring he’s planning to propose with today, since it’s Yeo-reum’s birthday. Oh no, this is going to be bad.

She realizes she’s slept at Tae-ha’s house, and in his bed, and horror dawns as she sees her clothes strewn all over the room. She crawls out of bed, freaking out, then runs right back to snatch her ringing phone off the nightstand before it wakes up Tae-ha. She crouches in the closet to answer Ha-jin’s call, and reflexively tells him she’s home, which he says is good because he’s downstairs. Uh-oh.

Ha-jin rings her doorbell and tells her to come out, and she thinks fast and says she can’t because Sol and Joon-ho are fighting. Only, Ha-jin turns to see both of them walking towards him on the street. HAHA. Yeo-reum hears Sol tell Ha-jin that she didn’t come home last night, making her lie sound even worse.

Ha-jin asks Yeo-reum where she is, but before she can think of an answer, Joon-ho grabs his bluetooth and asks Yeo-reum, “You’re at the studio…RIGHT??” He nearly saves her hide, but a clueless Sol says she was at the studio all night and Yeo-reum wasn’t there.

But Yeo-reum had time to think of an alibi, and says she’s at her mother’s. Again the day is saved for about two seconds, since her mother steps out of her house to say hello to Yeo-reum’s friends. Yeo-reum gives up and says she’ll explain later, and hangs up on Ha-jin.

Cringing as she watches her life falling apart around her, Yeo-reum turns to look at Tae-ha still asleep on the bed. His eyes slowly open and he gives her a sexy, enigmatic smile, and Yeo-reum thinks, “What happened to us last night?”

COMMENTS

What a cute show! I’m happy to see that the quirky, amusing teasers didn’t lead us astray and we seem to be getting exactly the cute, funny, and heartwarming story we were promised. I love the sweet, almost dreamy feel of the flashback scenes to Yeo-reum and Tae-ha as a couple, and it’s clear to see that their chemistry fairly sizzles, both in the past and in the present. I’ll admit that I have yet to see Que Sera, Sera, where Jung Yumi and Eric first appeared onscreen together, though I definitely want to (and even more so now). But I don’t need to have seen them act together before to feel their energy when they’re onscreen together. It says a lot when, even as big a fan of Sung Joon as I am (which is to say, hyoooge), I’m already rooting for Tae-ha and Yeo-reum to settle their differences and get back together.

I feel like the biggest strength this show has is its characters, who are all so wonderfully fun and fully fleshed out already. The casting is a big part of that, and I don’t think anyone can argue that this show isn’t superbly cast. From Tae-ha, Yeo-reum, and Ha-jin, to Sol and Joon-ho, and even down to Ah-rim who we haven’t even formally met yet, I already feel like I can’t wait to learn more about them and see what any one of them will do next. They already all feel like fully realized people, with pasts and lives that go on even when they’re not onscreen, and I’m so looking forward to all the shenanigans they’re going to get into.

But mostly, it’s the leads who made this premiere excellent in my opinion. I haven’t had the opportunity to see either Eric or Jung Yumi in much (again, an oversight I intend to correct very soon), so I’m going into this show pretty fresh when it comes to them. I find them both engaging, adorable, and again their chemistry together is astounding. Yeo-reum is endearingly sweet and I love how she thinks she’s so worldly-wise after having dated Tae-ha, but she’s really still very naïve and innocent when it comes to relationships. She’s so soft-spoken and gentle around her friends and Ha-jin, but when she’s with Tae-ha she totally changes. She bosses him around and takes charge of things quite handily, and I love seeing the “real” Yeo-reum come out when she’s with him. She can really be herself, which says a lot.

We know less about Ha-jin, but Sung Joon portrays him with that unique endearing quality he brings to all his roles, which makes you just want to love him. I find his character very interesting as he obviously loves Yeo-reum, but he’s got some secrets that make me wary of getting too attached. For one, his willingness to lie to Yeo-reum about the blind dates instead of just telling her what was happening from the beginning, tells me he’s more of an avoider than someone who will be upfront and honest. Then there’s the whole mystery of why he’s looking for a woman with a scar on her arm… what’s that all about? Color me intrigued.

But I think Tae-ha may be my favorite character so far, because he’s just got so much going on emotionally. He truly doesn’t understand why Yeo-reum broke up with him (let’s be honest, I barely understand why, because her explanation was so vague) and he plainly admits, both in the interview and right to her face, that he misses her and has wanted to see her. His heart is right there on his sleeve (and in his dreamy bedroom eyes, ~SWOON~) for all to see, and he doesn’t try to bluster or pretend he’s not shaken to his core to see Yeo-reum again. I love that he puts forth no pretense, nor does he try to salvage his pride by claiming that he’s been just fine without her. Tae-ha is just who he is – a man who loves a girl and would like another chance with her, and he’s not afraid for anyone to know it.

My favorite love stories are ones in which the guy falls in love first, and I love that in Discovery of Romance, not only does the guy fall first, but he’s been in love with her for years already. Not adoring puppy love either, but a full adult love that knows all her good and bad traits. I don’t think the show is going to re-write the rom-com, but the fact that the lead couple was in love once, and at least one of them is still in love to this day, is a fresh twist that I’m really looking forward to enjoying. I love how Eric is playing Tae-ha – not with slapstick and over-the-top comedic posturing like I expected from the teasers, but with depth and even a sense of sadness that makes his character that much more intriguing. I’m definitely excited to learn more about Tae-ha, and about what went wrong between him and Ye-reum, and watching them learn to mend their fences and find their way back to each other.

*jumping up and down clapping* – I love this drama! It is a mix of some of my favorite kdrama characters – Que Sera, Sera couple, Witch’s Romance roommate, I Need Romance 3 Sweet Potato, and Flower Boy Next Door sleepless snappy editor. The thing is all the characters in this drama are similar to the ones they played in the others. I am sure they will meld in a way that makes me remember them from Discovery of Romance, but just now the flavors from their roles in the other dramas tastes sweet. Funny how kdramas overlap that way.

OH THANK GOD YOU'RE RECAPPING THIS!! I'm watching this drama, and even though you kinda knew how things are going to end up, you'll end up really liking the drama anyway because of the way it tells the story. I agree with you, Owl, it is a mix of your mentioned characters. JY might as well just moved from INR2 character to this one, and she's so endearing in it. And Sol, oh how she just cracks me up with her deadpan answers. And Joon Ho, continues to be my favorite best friend from Witch's Romance. Fighting, DOR!

1. i haven't watched que sera, sera, but oh my god, i love sung joon and the editor from flower boy next door.
2. she has chemistry with both love interests! i suppose she's bound to reunite with the ex, but i'm hoping it won't be played out in a terribly predictable way. but then again, these sorts of storylines are like comfort food in a way- i'm admittedly looking forward to the jealousy that will ensue.
3. the bunny's eyes are freaky.
4. i was reminded of the movie very ordinary couple because of the interviewing style- anyone else? i'm also really liking the cinematography and editing style of this. so excited for this drama, which will probably tide me over the sadness of marriage not dating ending this week(T.T)

The cast is awesome and really make the best of the fun characters.

And oh noes, YR please don't break Ha-jin's heart! Going on blind dates to please his mom behind your back is a big NO. But cheating on him is worse.

I really want her men to have equal chances to end up with her! Gosh that Ha-jin guy is too sweet! Tae-ha is for now the jerk...

Oh man I typed a long long comment about my feels about the drama and it got eaten up! What is with the captcha thing?

The drama reminds me of a lot of old characters in different dramas and I'm loving it! I could see why they initially wanted Lee Jinwook for the role cos I could definitely see him in it. Although I must say Eric is doing a great great job. Those eyes ... should be illegal I tell you.

Important questions: Who do you love more - Eric or Sung Joon?

I couldn't decide at all. Oh my excited heart. This is sucha cute rom-com drama! It was light and I really didn't expected this from a KBS drama - I actually had to check if it was really a KBS drama (I think I watch to much TVN stuffs) heee It was like an I Need Romance sorta story telling isn't it?

Yay for cute dramas :) and sexy leads hehe

Reading the recap and realize I missed out on the part about Hajin asking Joonho if he sees any woman with a scar on the hand when I watched the drama. This will probably come to play for him to cross path with the 2nd female lead.

Very glad Eric comes back this year and it's a reunion with Yumi. Love their sizzling chemistry. It's even better than QSS.

Thanks so much for the recap. It's very well written.

I'd never heard of Eric before this, and based on the posters and such, I didn't get his appeal either. I didn't get why people found him so attractive; I found him lunkish and goofy-looking. But then I started watching this and was like, "Oh, I get it now." There's a certain something about him that still photos just don't capture. I can't put my finger on what it is, but it's very attractive. I think you have to see and hear him in motion to get it. Even scrolling through the screenshots above, I'm thinking, "He was so much hotter in the actual drama."

EXACTLY!! Yes to everything you said. Even in the posters, he didn't look hot to me. But once he got rid of the 2004-2009 hair in the drama, he was just Uber sexy

I was so sad that Trot lovers ended and I couldn't see Hyunwoo oppa again. But this totally lifted my spirits. Wow. I am on team Eric. This is his first drama for me and I am sold. Is it the character? He's so sweet. I don't see why they'd breakup. Hoping for loads of fun and less heartbreak. I had enough heartbreak in this one episode to suffice the entire drama.
Oh the bunny! So cute!

The first episode left me optimistic and intrigued enough to watch also the second one. That's not bad for starters.

What I liked:
- secondary characters - goofballs!
- witty dialogue -
- Tae Ha *swoon* - I am charmed by his confidence and composed demeanour.
- nice pacing overall
- fresh setting without too many clishes and cookie-cutter characters or situations

What I didn't like:
- the dialogues that weren't witty. I found myself ff from time to time because I felt bored during some conversations...
- Yeo Reum's wishy-washy attitude that everybody is supposed to understand. Like she's upset, wants TH to ask about it, he does ask, she doesn't answer and is upset even more, he tries to console her, she gets mad... I didn't figure out what her problem was (except that she obviously has a problem with herself) and therefore find her cocky behaviour in the interview a little off.
- the moment when I realised again that I am too cynical to fully enjoy a romcom. I guess the viewers were supposed to swoon and be attracted to Ha Jin. I totally wasn't. Not only because I don't care for the actor (not a fan of Eric either, it's fair and square in that aspect), but also I was slightly irritated by his too perfect behaviour. What should be moving, felt insincere and stiff. Or is it only me who doesn't have any warm feelings when a guy buys a ring to propose? I mean, I am ok with using rings for that purpose ;), it's just I was impatient during the scene where he was shown looking for the ring and talking about his girlfriend's birthday. Just let him have the ring and go on with the story...

PS Is it only me or the rabbit is an allusion to INR2's first episode where Jung Yoo Mi talks to Lee Jin Wook about her slow rabbit?

Since dramas have a knack for integrating old fairy tales, I immediately thought of Alice in Wonderland. (But then again, I've never seen INR2.) For the time being I'm going to HOPE that it's Alice and try to discover other clues :D

Oh, the Alice in Wonderland thing makes sense (but since it is almost midnight now, it took me a while to figure it out). She followed the rabbit and because of if ended up at Tae Ho's. That is a clever thought.

INR was good. The scene I am talking about is the very first one in the whole drama and leads both characters straight into the bedroom. So in a way, it has some similarity...

Is it just me or that hotel blind date scene, the dialogue and the setting, was totally similar to Kim Samsoon's first episode?! In any case, enjoying this drama a lot already. Loving the reunions of old kdrama couples and thankful for all the good romcoms lately after that very long drought in the first half of the year.

To be perfectly honest I wasn't impressed at all... and that comes from someone who LOVED Que Sera Sera, and only gave this drama a chance because of this particular re-pairing.

Part of the problem, I'm sure, is because I watched the first episode of My Secret Hotel immediately before this one, and instantly fell in love with those characters, and that storyline instead. There, the tone was more humorous, despite the murder, and though the plot was similar (first loves reuniting, embarrassing incidents due to drunkeness, etc) it felt fresher, fun, and more gratifying by episode's end. It was really hard not to compare and contrast... and sadly, in most cases, this one failed to live up to its predecessor. Plus, I couldn't get behind the ending at all, and didn't find it romantic in the slightest: She's in a serious relationship with a great guy, but ends up (possibly) having drunken sex with her ex... and I'm supposed to swoon? Don't even get me started on how wrong he is for taking advantage of her when he knows she has a boyfriend.

I'm sure they're destined and perfect for each other, I just wish they would have waited until at least the third or fourth episode to get them to this point... because I'm not at that oh-my-gosh-I-LOVE-them-so-so-sooo-much phase yet, so I was more disgusted than enchanted with their mishap.

Yes, maybe it'll get better... or maybe distance will help me judge it more fairly, and lessen the crushing disappointment. For now though, I just had to put my two cents out there since so many people seem quick to sing its praises, and I'm not quite sure its earned it yet. For me, this premiere was very mediocre at best. I'll probably give it one more episode to wow me, but if it doesn't blow me away, this may be the new drama I end up dropping.

I'm with you on this. I really wanted to like it but ended up having an instant crush on MSH though I watched it afterwards and I was super pissed that GoongMin oppar wasn't the lead lol. I don't know what's not working in Discovery of Romance but i'll try judging again after next week. Happy to see another lover of My Secret Hotel ^^

Don't worry, I'll be suffering second-lead syndrome right along with you... I've loved GoongMin ever since Can You Hear My Heart, so my heart's already breaking for him. Especially since I'm starting to like the main lead after watching episode two, so the torture will only get more horrendous from here on out. But even so, I want more episodes! It's a good kinda pain. ;)

Yeah, I'm still going to give this one the benefit of the doubt, since I love Jung Yumi and Eric. It's just too bad it couldn't be instant love like with MSH. They're so similar but there's such different vibes to them, it's hard to believe they're both romcoms. For me, it all depends on how they treat the drunken fallout... if they're not characters I like and respect, it won't matter who the actors are. I'll bail and never look back.

Required fields are marked *

Well, I must say that I watched both premieres back to back, but I enjoyed Discovery much more than My Secret Hotel. It felt nicer, more carefree (I guess it is because DOR starts out from showing the characters in their private lives whereas MSH starts in the workplace, not to mention the accident). As much as I can say that I liked both female leads' performances (my heart is with Yoo Inna - her wardrobe is terrific - but all in all a draw), the male characters were drawn better in DOR - they are distinctive and we actually get to know them, and in MSH they come and go, but don't leave much of an impression, we rather learn about them.

As for the ending of DOR - I think you may be reading too much to what we were shown in ep.1. They were sleeping and we don't know any details how they fell asleep ;P.

Of course everybody has their own preferences and expectations, and I don't have a problem with someone stating a different opinion, I just wanted to point out, that what you found attractive, had a lukewarm effect on someone else, and vice versa - I didn't mind the things that you disliked and felt disgusted about. For example Ha Jin - you find him perfect, I find him annoying. And so the praises may be a bit overly enthusiastic, but I am sure many viewers did find satisfying moments in the first episode.

Required fields are marked *

That's exactly what I was pointing out though... that what everyone else praised, loved, and found attractive, I didn't. All you did was switch it around to make me sound like a killjoy, lol. I'm not begrudging anyone their enjoyment, I'm just playing devil's advocate for those who may be a bit more leery about giving this drama a go, because not everyone found it as perfect and enjoyable as many of the commenters on this site did.

For the record, I really didn't find Ha Jin perfect - he has flaws just like the rest of them. But as a boyfriend, yes, he's great because 1.) He's clearly not cheating on her, despite the blind dates. 2.) they get along great with each other, and she's clearly happy with him. 3.) We're not shown that he's a gambler, cruel, or abusive, and in fact, only her debts are forcing her to hold him at arm's lengths regarding marriage. 4.) They're both consenting adults, who seem to care about each other (she's even trying to win over his mother, which shows she's serious).

That being said, I'm not saying he's a *better* boyfriend than Tae-ha, who from what we saw in the flashbacks, was romantic, sweet, and adorable - to the point where I still don't fully understand why they broke up in the first place. I'm just saying Tae-ha isn't some knight-and-shining-armor, here to rescue the damsel from a terrible relationship... so how can I look at the ending in a romantic light? At this point, it was a mistake and it was wrong, whether they had sex or not. Waking up next to your ex is just not something you do when you're in a committed relationship; drunk or no.

Basically: There are better ways to express regret, longing, and sexual tension than getting our leads drunk and forcing them in bed together. In fact, that was something I felt My Secret Hotel tackled brilliantly, which made the flaws here stand out even more (if I didn't have something to compare it against, maybe I wouldn't be bothered as much; but our own perceptions color what we watch, whether we want them to or not.)

So even if Eric's character is end-game, having a drunken romp (I was careful to say *possibly* before, though it's clear we're supposed to think sex happened, what with the strewn clothes, and bed-sleeping and all), being drunk is not an excuse. She's clearly serious about Ha Jin, and he's serious about her (and about to propose), so I fail to find this accident with Tae-ha anything other than wrong. If this was the other way around, and it was the doomed second-lead she woke up next to, people would be foaming at the mouth and carrying pitchforks!

Maybe my opinion will change tomorrow when I watch the second episode, but for now... ending on that note just left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I want to cheer for this couple, to know why they're perfect for each other, and to love the heroine as much as these two guys obviously do... but right now (despite the amazingness of Jung Yumi), I'm not there. And...

So, this is the team production said previously that the drama is very realistic. No one is perfect in this drama. They have their own problem in personalities. Yeoreum, Tae Ha, Nam Ha Jin and maybe after sometimes we could figure out other second leads characters too.

I'm not watching MSH so I can't give any comments yet. But I did enjoy DoR very much because of the character imperfections. They are childish, selfish, possessive, naive. I love to see those characters because it's just like us. I'm looking forward the next episodes. And hopefully this drama will give us so much fun during this fall season.

To be fair, you can say that about EVERY drama out there. I mean, I have yet to watch a show where the characters are all *perfect*, without flaws, or devoid of personalities. That's kinda the bread of butter of television and literature, and not something that's unique to this show LOL.

I said unique, because all of the character is totally imperfect, just like us in real life. And I don't smile any makjang in here yet. If you don't like, just drop it. No need long comments or arguments with many people here who're enjoying the shows. Everyone has their own taste. No need to push yourself to make other people hate this show though…In my opinion, you seem like wanna promote people to watch My Secret Hotel indirectly by praising it as the best korean drama ever...kkkkkkkk…..

0

Sandra: And all I'm getting from you, is that you're a bully who's trying to force your personal opinion down other peoples throats, despite detractors who show legitimate reasons for not connecting to this drama. Read the comments in ANY series recapped here: There's always people who put in the time and energy to watch a series they ended up not liking, and they have just as much right to express their opinion, than those who loved it.

I'm not picking a fight. I'm defending my opinion, because people keep attacking it.

Take My Secret Hotel. There's negative reviews in the comments there too, but you don't see me going around freaking out on people. Their opinions are every bit as valid as mine, even if I don't agree. And I was never "promoting" that drama. All I was doing was explaining how my perceptions of this one may have been colored by a similar show I'd just watched. Below, I even admitted that this one DID get better... but you're so far up your own ****, all you can hear is your own voice. If YOU don't like my opinion, move on, and don't be a hypocrite. I only replied because your inital response was vapid and made no sense; which was in my right since YOU responded to ME first.

0

My apologies then. I don't mean to attack anyone opinion….^^

Yea, Jung Yumi's character really got on my nerves. I think the show itself is cute but I had to fast-forward some parts of the second episode because by then I really couldn't listen to her anymore.

I'm also not a fan of the bed scene whether they did sleep together or not and I just see it as her sending mixed signals. It sucks cause she is super cute with Eric but her whole "defensive and manipulative yet oh I'm just naive and cute" thing is a bit of a turn off.

But yeah I think My Secret Hotel set everything up better so I'm more excited for that.

I agree, I'm not impressed at all with the first two episodes. Nothing was good enough to pull me in, yet... Except for Eric, of course! I'm not feeling the female lead as well, her character is rather bland and doesn't "pop" to me. Everything is just 'meh'. It's hard competing with so many good dramas airing at the same like this. Maybe I'll just watch only for Eric!

Okay, she eventually came clean and was honest, so I forgive her (him, not so much). I actually did like this episode better, though the "confessional" style of storytelling is already getting on my nerves. I'm still not sure if I'll continue this or not though. It's kind of meh for me - the characters and story haven't hooked me yet, and I'm not dying to find out how or if they'll get back together. It is improving and I do see potential, but there are so many other amazing shows I'm watching at the moment, this one's kinda low on my list. I may or may not continue it... I'll have to see how the time-issue works out for me in the future.

In the meantime, I hope everyone else continues to enjoy it! It's not bad, just flawed. But then again, what drama isn't?

I can't even find a better word, but since this one descibes him pretty well, I'm not gonna bother.

Thanks for recapping Discovery of Romance [aka Discovery of Love] LollyPip.

Episodes 1 & 2 were cute and very appealing. The hotel scene with Han Yeo-Reum, Kang Tae-Ha, and Nam Ha-Jin certainly was an attention-grabber. Each alibi that Yeo-Reum offered to Ha-Jin was blown to smithereens. Her claims debunked back-to-back from friends and family (coming one after another in real time). The ending sequence of scenes felt like knock-out punches were not only delivered to Yeo-Reum but to the audience by extension as witnesses.

Psyched to have Eric and Jung Yu-Mi reunite in another kdrama after Que Sera Sera. Smiles all around for Sung Joon (White Christmas & I Need Romance 3), Yoon Hyun-Min (Heartless City), Kim Seul-Gi (Flower Boy Next Door), and Yoon Jin-Yi (A Gentleman's Dignity) all appearing in the same drama.

Que Sera Sera has received honorable mentioned numerous times in the Friday Open Threads. Before Discovery of Romance aired, I was determined to see for myself what all the hype was about...So I made it my goal to watch Que Sera Sera. Glad to report - Mission Accomplished. Indeed, QSS lived up to the hype - all 17 episodes.

I'm a bit dissapointed with Sung Joon character. It's like a less awesome version of sweet potato (but still awesome). But with just 2 eps, I need to wait and see.

Actually, I loved Jung Yoomi & Eric in Que sera sera so much that even if I didn't like the drama (in the middle the shit starts) I've rewatched their parts (mostly happy, pre- wtfjusthappened ones) because their chemistry is out of this world.

For me they rank between 1 or 3 position in k.drama chemistry couple.

So, I'm in paradise with this drama. SOOO HAPPY!

+ 2 seconds leads (specially my SeulGi) that are adorkable, looking forward their love line.

Sooo.... I have never seen Eric in anything....errr....I mean dramawise. :) I have to admit, I see why he gets some love. I am loving the chemistry between the exes but I do have an observation or two...

Parts of the first two eps (no wories, I am not mentioning any spoilers) seem so very reminiscent of INR3. Yes, I know, Sung Joon is the connection, but I some of the things his character does reminds me ALOT of INR3....things his character does, some scenes, some locations and the angle of the shots. It felt really strange to me. It was a little deja vu.

I'm torn . . . but I think I'm gonna pass on this one. Sung Joon is a favorite of mine, but I'd like to see him as more of a rebel/outsider. And the other two leads -- I dunno. I couldn't stand the woman in Romance 2 or Que Sera (performances -- she's probably a lovely person in RL), and I liked Eric better with the other woman in QS . . . to be fair though I quit about 10 episodes in on that one.

As well written as the recap was (thanks for that!), the plot and situations described seemed pretty unfunny (the slap) or contrived (the bunny) or overused (the drunk female lead).
I know -- there are slaps in other shows -- It's Ok, That's Love springs to mind -- but in that show it's not a device, it actually makes sense. And there are too many drunken females to count in a variety of shows, and it never fails to be my least favorite scene, no matter what the show and no matter how charming the heroine otherwise is.

Anyway, it's not like there isn't an embarrassment of riches right now in the way of rom coms, etc. I can always check this one out later if there's a rom com dry spell.

what i love about this drama is the realism. too many times in kdramas i have seen 20-30 yr olds scandalized by a mere peck on the lips. or even a non lip moving kiss to end a drama. i've always appreciated INL series and now DoR to show relationships how they are in reality.

and the chemistry between Jung Yumi and Eric is out of this world. i'm also a big fan of Sung Joon. really can't wait for Sung Joon to meet Eric, and when will he find out that he is the ex.

Eric has long been a favorite of mine, so i am ecstatic to see him in a new drama. especially this drama, because after the disappoinment that Spy Myung Wol was and him turning down Golden Cross and Trot Lovers, he's ended up with a really good role.

This sort of reminds me of Unemployed Romance which I liked a lot. A sweet, fun, uncomplicated end of summer romantic comedy seems an accurate description for this one. I have to admit I have never been a big Eric Moon (Mun??) fan. He's always seemed kind of bland and generic to me as a leading man. But the scene of him in bed staring at Yeo-reum as she lies to her boyfriend with those half lidded come-hither-so I-can-do-things-to-you eyes - well yes -- very sexy and not bland at all!

Lol….Eric is bland??? In my opinion Eric is the most smexy manly korean actor that I ever known…You should watch Shinhwa Broadcast to know his personality more. Honestly, I found him randomly through that hilarious show. The dude is such a dork, playful, funny but we can't deny he still has that sexy aura even without trying. And now he's becoming older, still no one that young actors could compare to his natural swag and sexyness….

There's just this unspoken chemistry between Jung Yoo Mi and Eric that'll make fans of Que Sera Sera especially nostalgic when watching them here in Discovery of Romance. It's especially sweet to hear eric say that he chose this project (after a 3 year hiatus from dramaland) because "it was all jung yoo mi at first for me". To the point where he asked his members to postpone shinhwa promotions because this was the first drama in a while that he wanted to be a part of since QSS. Of course, Jung Yoo Mi was the one who mentioned Eric's name to the production team as soon as she read the role of Kang Tae Ha.. You get from her words that she has a fondness for Eric oppa. Listening to them talk about each other at the press conference just brought back too many feels, esp. with eric mentioning that he hoped they would finally be able to tie up loose threads in Que Sera Sera here in Discovery of Romance with more sweetness and happiness.

That sort of offscreen chemistry and established bond really translates onscreen and you just feel that they share this sort of deep connection with their characters.
Sigh, reunion OTPs. They just get you that much more.

Eric and Jung Yoo Mi are equally powerful in their acting, raw in their emotions, and magnetic with their chemistry. The fact that the writer has crafted such a real world of love and life filled with relatable (REAL) characters just allows us to have a deeper connection to them.
Yeah, this show is probably gonna hit me hard cause i already have so much nostalgic feels for Jung Yoo Mi and Eric.

When Eric mentioned about tying up loose threads in Que Sera Sera in this drama, I can't help but wonder what it'll be. It has the INR ingredients, yet it feels some sprinkles of QSS in here. DoR is a sequel to INR? or it's a sequel to QSS? The ending in QSS certainly opens for one ^^

I love the press conference. Eric, Yumi & Sung Jun were so playful. Eric & Yumi are especially engaging when they embraced each other and that shows through the drama.

I haven't yet seen Que Sera Sera, oopsie, but from what I've seen there's nothing to doubt between the two leads' chemistry.

Jung Yu-mi is as cute as always. Loved her in INR 2. Even though her character here seems a lot alike with hers in INR, I still love her nonetheless. I expect to see a lot more deoth to her cute, bubbly character, though.

ERIC. IS. SO. HOT.

"Que sera sera" is not my favorite dramas, I think they can make a wonderful couple! I still stay with the kiss of Jung Hoon! jiji
Incidentally, I also immediately thought of Alice in Wonderland when I saw the rabbit.

I must say this. Eric is a drool-swoon worthy guy on earth. If only there is a korean version of James Bond, Eric must be casted for that role. The guy is too hot to handle. I knew him since Spy Myung Wol. He was handsome in that series which made me stay till the ned even though the script was totally mess. BUt now, he's becoming more gorgeous and sexy…Is he married??? How lucky the girl to have him...

I love the story. So much fun and lovely scene. I enjoy to watch whenever Eric-Yoo Mi together on screen whether they're bickering, fighting or lovey dove scenes….Gosh…gimme more….gimme more...

Eric is officially single. Though he said he's often the one being dump in realtionship lol. Not sure if he was joking or not but if I were the gal, would probably feel very insecure being his GF lol

Thanks for the recap! Convinced me to check out the first ep, so glad I did. Yeo Rim (?) is kinda annoying right now so just hoping she gets more tolerable later on... >_> and the ending scene is bittersweet to me. On one hand, drunken possible sex with her ex? Say it ain't so -_- On the other hand, *fans self* Eric and his bedroom eyes gah!

Thanks LollyPip for recapping the drama. :)

I'm enjoying it so far. Already all on board with Yeo Reum and Tae Ha though I'm still approaching their relationship with caution. From what I gathered, it's not so much that he doesn't know why, more like he doesn't think the reasons she gave are good enough or serious enough to call for a break up. Which to me is a concern because he still hasn't realized that those issues matter to her very much.

Oh well, still too early to judge on anything. It's not like Yeo Reum is without faults of her own as well.

Really dig that they portray relationships as how it really is in this world. So I'm not complaining on the ample amount of skinship. Though. I'm not so much into leading ladies getting drunk often and getting themselves into awkward situations which seems to be the current trend in dramas nowadays.

Anyway, looking forward to next week. *fingers crossed*

I'm with you on this; I don't like it much either.

Thanks for the recap Lollypip!

I can't believe I am watching an Eric/Yumi fluffy comedy.. Que Sera Sera was so intense that it felt kinda weird watching the first episode. Add the fact that they also threw in some of these memorable supporting characters like the guy from Witch's Romance and the editor from FBND. It was a fun but surreal watch. hehe I am glad that Sung Joon is at least not playing a character that does music. I hope they do some QSS meta or something. lol I am enjoying this show so far but a bit anxious coz of the KBS writing curse.

Hehe Hey there! My plate is still full even after MND is finished. Currently following IOIL, My Secret Hotel (just to stare at Yoo In Na kekeke), Discovery of Romance, Three Musketeers, Surplus Princess, Yoona's Street, MND and FTLY. Not sure if I am gonna stick to all the new ones but they all look good so far. These once a week dramas are messing me up though.

I love looove the 1st ep, but by the 2nd ep, Yu Mi's character is starting to grate on my nerves as I cannot follow her actions logically. Here's hoping this drama will be good, as the main trio's chemistry is gold, and I've been waiting for a chance to ogle, uhm I mean watch, Eric in a romcom. Loving the semi documentary format too which the production can manipulate for funny beats.

I love this drama. The chemistry and the acting are superb among the casts. And I appreciate KBS2 for being more open minded. Every characters in this drama have shown their imperfectness which I like. And Eric, what to do…the man just so delicious to look at. He's ridiculously attractive. I even can't focus on his lines during the drama because his sexyness totally distracted me. I like Yoon Hyun Min and Kim Seul Gi acting very much. And of course how can I forget the main female lead Jung Yoo Mi. She's adorable, even though I don't think I like her character later on, but she portraits Yeoreum really well.
