Yoon-ah out of Nodame Cantabile remake

The internet has spoken: Yoon-ah will not be taking the lead role in the Korean adaptation of Nodame Cantabile, which by the way is operating under the working title Cantabile Romance. (I suppose it makes sense, since Nodame is the Japanese character’s name and will probably change for a Korean drama.)

According to Yoon-ah’s management, she turned down the Cantabile Romance role in order to consider other projects instead. To that end, she will be taking to the big screen with a Korean-Chinese co-production called Goodbye Ani, a romantic comedy in which she plays the lovable title character of Ani (Annie? Ahni?).

That sounds a lot like a nice way to spin that they had to backpedal out of the Cantabile Romance project, but you know, if it gets us a better Nodame, let them save all the face they want. This is exactly why the media’s casting-announcement song and dance operates the way it does; as much as I find it frustrating to get so many hesitant or incomplete announcements (“The actor is considering, it’s not final, there’s a verbal agreement, but there’s no contract, it might happen maybe”), this allows for people to test the waters without feeling like they’re losing too much if they have to shift gears.

This news is not too surprising but I’m relieved just the same, because I did wonder if production company Group Eight and broadcaster KBS would forge ahead and insist on Yoon-ah’s casting no matter how fans felt about it. But fan response to the news was fairly negative all across the board, so I have to assume the producers decided to change course rather than deal with that wave of resistance. I don’t think the tone of the reactions to Yoon-ah’s possible casting was too terrible, in that the responses weren’t furiously or viciously negative; it’s just that that seemed to be a blanket feeling of disappointment or dubiousness. Even the more positive responses tended to go in the direction of “She’s fine, but not right for this character.”

Now that Nodame’s up for grabs again, can I be cautiously optimistic again? Can we try someone like Lee Yubi? How much bribery would it take to lure Park Bo-young back to dramas?

the K-adaptation going to fall short no matter who plays the main role... The j-version has that special magic that many k-drama can't capture on screen because of the way korean drama handle comedy.. Example The flower boy(I know it is not a comedy) or something drama haha which in my opinion was a disaster...

I'm calling it now, the tone of the k-version will start light and then boooommm they will make it dark and mahjong in the middle and end... And for god sake I hope they don't f¤%k up the music because that could be one of their strength if they fusion some kpop with the classic music..

Side note.. It will be hard to try not to compare the two and be objective...

I agree with you. In an ideal world the remake wouldn't even exist....but then if I managed to forget about To The Beautiful You, I can erase a disastrous k-Nodame from my memory too.

It just hit me all of a sudden, not sure if it's possible, but what do you guys think of Kim So Eun? I recall she mentioned in an interview that she'd like to play a role similar to Nodame Cantabile.

I love Kim So Eun, she's willing to challenge herself and has talent plus is long overdue for her big break so if she got the role I'd be happy for her.

But I hate that this remake is happening at all.

Not a Yoona-hater....but OH THANK GOD.....
All my hopes were shattered when I heard that Yoona might be cast in it....but now I'm so relieved....phew
Well, lets see...who could be Nodame...hmmm,somebody like Go Ara or Eun Ji would have been great...
Now that the black cloud is not over our head anymore,I am just looking forward to who they cast as Nodame now.....If the producers have actually considered the fans' opinions, then I believe someone awesome will be casted.
Hoping for the best.

I read on the web that it will be directed by

The PD of Equator Man (KBS drama) and the writer for Dating Agency Cyrano will do the scripwriter...

I can't remember where I saw it and even don't rmember the name.. agh.

I know that Equator Man have 1 PD directing it and he than co-directed Blade and Petals with another PD.

I don't know which PD will do Iron Man (Ji-sung new drama) and this Nodame Cantabile.

good luck to yoona with her other projects.

Now we have to survive another tsunami: they will probably start pushing IU, I think. Also not right for the actress or the role.

but it is very difficult. Kim Seul gi, yes, I can see that might work.

All hail!!

Now hear my prayers :D

I wish they'd consider Kim Seul-gi, or Han Groo, or heck, I wish Kang Hye-jung were younger, lol. No need for a conventionally pretty actress, but someone who can do quirky and a bit weird and 4D but still appealing.

Amen.

Sorry fans of the manga and J-drama might bash me for this but I just want to voice out my opinion.

I'm not a fan of manga/anime and J-drama adaptions but saw a bit of clip posted in Soompi and I dnt know, I think if you're playing the character out of the manga/anime than the actress of the J-drama really nailed it.' With her body language and high pitch voice, she really looks like a manga character.

But, judging from K-drama kind comedies, I think that kind of comedy will be successful in Korean drama. Why do I find that the character is such annoying. I don't think I want to see 20 something musical student acted like that, like a clingy 8 years old.

I don't know, this is probably from someone who is not a fan of manga.. So I''m sorry if I'm offended anyone. But I clearly don't want to see that in my K-drama.

i read all the fuss about this remake n try to watch the original, i like the story but the overate comedy is really disturbing for me. i wiss if they really remake this dramathey will change the comedic part
In manga the comedy seems find but when it translate to drama i feel it weird
I can see Joo won as Chiake, he could be cold n serious n could do comedy too

YES.

I tried watching Nodame ages ago when it first came out because of the hype, but could not, for the life of me, bring myself to finish it.

If they follow the "comedy" style of the manga/Jdrama, I'm definitely not watching the remake. I'm not saying it's bad, just that it isn't my type.

haven´t drama producers heard of TRY-OUTS? They should TEST the potential actresses for the role and then decide who suits best.

but I tend to agree with most people: drop it alltogether cause 9 out of 10 korean remakes of jdorama have been humiliating and stupid.

Well, I believe Park Bo-young would be the perfect choice (hope is life as we say in French). But she's just on another acting level now (too good for dramas?)...

The Lee Yu-bi suggestion isn't bad either :D! I haven't thought of it!

However, I'm still rooting for Jung Eunji (Answer Me 1997, Trot Lovers) as Nodame.

No IU and NO Jin Se-yeon please...

My preferred Nodame:
1) Han Groo (Marriage Not Dating)
2) Moon Geun Young (Cinderella's Sister)
3) Jung Eun Ji (Reply 1997)
4) Kim Seul Ki (Flower Boys Next Door)
5) Ham Eun Jung (Coffee House)

My preferred Chiaki:
1) Park Ki Woong (Bridal Mask)
2) Choi Jin Hyuk (Emergency Couple)
3) Kim Woo Bin (Heirs)
4) Kang Ha Neul (Monstar)
5) Hyun Bin (Secret Garden) ... last because he's slightly over-age

But Ki-Woongie is in the army...:-( don´t even mention - pain... so much pain. waaahaaa why did you mention him.

I also thought he might have been better than at least Joo Won. But no, he is too cute. Chiaki is kind of rough-sexylike a strike of lightning. he has an overwhelming charisma that kills you dead. Song Joong Ki, also not out of army yet, has similarly striking charisma.

Moon Geun Young is totally not the type by a millimeter. not at all.

Kim Seul-Gi would be better. she is the type and she has the expressiveness.

All the same, I am SO RELIEVED to read this news! Also, it's nice to see that the producers do take fan opinions into consideration; maybe this means that we'll get a new actress who is fabulously quirky and suited for the role. (Now that someone mentioned Im Joo Eun last time, I'm kind of really hoping for her in the role.)

She is really talented in acting and already won best actress in Baeksang awards.. she is truly chameleon and already acting opposite many talented veteran actors, like lee byung hun, sung kyul gu, jung woo sung and so on...with her impressive resumes, i believe she can held her own acting opposite chameleon actor, joo won! and yeah they are at same age. Han hyo joo herself is already charming and totally can let loose ! (watch her in running man!) and god! she can play piano too! watch this

Chiaki aura! Tamaki hiroshi didn't look 21 in nodame too. He was 26 or so at that time I think.

It's quite hard to find someone like him in k drama land, he's like a sculpture. If only hyun bin's younger, or kang dong won.

0

@damianna

Yep, Tamaki was 26 when he took the role, but at least he wasn't 31 playing 21, if you get what I mean. He could still pass for a university student.

Anyway, he totally nailed Chiaki's aura.

0

Yeah, Tamaki is Chiaki just as much as Ueno is Nodame. Hard to top them both. Very. Hard.

i would really want it to be yoon jin yi....

Well, Yoona did not step downwards for her next project. The film is directed by Kwak Jae-yong (My Sassy Girl, The Classic) and written by Hwang In-ho (Spellbound, Two Faces of My Girlfriend). She is said to play a character with multiple personalities from psycho to bubbly.

The script also won the "Future Project Prize" at the 2009 Shanghai Film Festival. So it seems she is in for nice project and character which is less risky than "Nodame".

I really don't want this remake to happen at all and now that it is, I'm glad Yoona passed on the role. I like her and think she's improved her acting but she's not capable of Nodame, SM made the right decision by having her pass.

Not super fond of Joo-won as Chiaki either but he's cast already, have to live with it I guess. And I'm going to echo a lot more comments on this page and beg KBS to please cast a capable actress......i.e. not the one who left them high and dry after Gaksital/Age of Feeling.

I don't think PSH won't risk herself in this drama especially if they remade it .
Nodame the J version is the best & I don't think korean will beat it whatever who will play the characters I am glad that yoona escaped the disaster & I don't think PBY will play Nodame her choices & her projects are successful .

I think they shouldn't remake it
& If they will remake it a Rookie actress will be better bcz she need to be shown & she will be Unknown for the crazy fans .
